Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's Tony Pike Cincy three sixty about Cincinnati from Cincinnati,
(00:05):
sponsored in hard by Penn Station East Coast Subs. Hand
prepped it. I'm grilled subs, fresh cut fries and lemonade.
It's all about good taste. Penn Station East Coast Subs
orderum mine today. This is ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Welcome back our three Thanks to Penn Station. Thank you
for listening along to since e three to sixty on
the Home of the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station, Austin.
Let's get right into it. It is my second favorite Nickoson,
but my favorite Nickoson that covers the Bearcats. Our good
friend Keegan joining us from Big twelve Media Day. Hi Keegan,
(00:48):
Hi Ty, How I'm good. How are you?
Speaker 3 (00:52):
I'm doing excellent. I'm sitting outside of the Tea Moville Center,
got the sun shining down. It's been a good day
so far, and I'm excited to be talking.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Any big takeaways from what we've heard or what you
heard from Wes Miller or any of the players today.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
I mean, tangibly, the biggest takeaway I would have is
that somehow there's a slight possibility that Perkriesa could take
advantage of a seventh year of eligibility next season. I'm
not sure the exact kind of things that would have
to happen, or contingencies or stuff with the rules, because
I mean, I've been trying to study this stuff for
(01:30):
three years. I still have no idea what's going on.
But there's some way. And something that happened is freshman
year where he could get another extra year of eligibility,
and we asked him about it, because you don't know
for sure if a kid can get mixture year, if
he's going to want to come back, especially when he's
been here for six years or been in college for
six years, and he goes, yeah, college basketball is the
(01:52):
best thing in the world. I would absolutely take advantage
of a seventh year. So other than that, nothing's huge
role changes about continuations with and one polls is going
to look more like the NBA, and then the coach's
challenges that are going to be implemented this season. Wes
Miller said he he likes that they're trying to modernize
(02:14):
and trying to kind of change some stuff, but he
doesn't like how it's going to work, especially with the challenges,
So a lot of stuff going on, a lot of
stuff we can hit on, but still got some stuff
to cover.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
So Keigan, the injury to Jalen Haines, big sliine, What
was the role in your opinion of Haines going to
be on this team? And subsequently, how big of a
loss is this for the Bearcats. I know there's no
timetable on his injury, but how big of a loss
is this?
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Yeah, it's a pretty big loss. I think in terms
of playing through the post, he was going to be
one A, maybe one B with Mustapha Cham But when
you just think about the role that he would have
played in the offense and kind of just the big
back to the basket guy who has kind of the
(03:06):
skyhook move for back people down. It's something that you
see hasn't had since maybe Gary Clark in twenty nineteen,
and it's something that a lot of coaches or a
lot of fans has missed and they've just been asking
for someone that they could just throw the ball down
to in the post and get a bucket. The good
(03:27):
thing is is that I feel Wes Miller kind of
maybe over compensated a little bit in that area. He
also brought in Ustafa Chan who can do that. Baba
Miller showed that he could do it against Michigan, so
he added a ton of really really good depth. It's
a testament to how good of a transport portal class
they had that you you lose a big player, potential
(03:48):
starter in Jaln Haynes, and it's not exactly doom or gloom.
The outlook for the season is a little down from
where it was before the injury, just because we all
know how tough these Big twelve schedules can get, especially
when you get into late February. But I think just
kind of pivoting to Mistapha Chom or Maba Miller is
(04:11):
going to be the best thing.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Last Friday, we saw the Bearcats continued dominance over the
Big ten and exhibition games continue. Last year was Ohio State,
this year it was Michigan. I overreacted last year to
how they looked against Ohio State in the exhibition. Did
you see things on Friday against Michigan that give you
reason for more optimism on how this team is constructed
(04:36):
and how they play off of each other.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
I think the biggest thing you can look at regardless
of exhibition. Is is Shaun of Bios. Because when you
have that kid coming from the overtime Eleak circuit, which
I got to play it. I got to watch it
in Atlanta last year when they played Georgia Tech, and
it's a different brand of high school basketball. It's kind
of like they're not playing extremely tough defense. It's kind
(05:03):
of just the best offensive players were shining. He was
scoring forty points like night in and night out, and
you have questions. You know, this kid is skilled, you
know that he can compete at the OTE level, but
how is it going to translate when this offensive firepower
is going up against some of the best talent in
the country and him scoring fifteen points, him staying true
(05:24):
to his game, hitting the step back freeze, kind of
going in isolation and getting a bucket. That's what fans
can be excited about, and they can say, Okay, this
kid is not a bust. He's going to be good
and he's going to be someone you see can rely
on the rest of it, I'm not really sure how
much you can really take from it. I think Kirk
Briso played how he's going to play the entire season
(05:46):
in terms of how aggressive he was in three point shooting.
Since her Harris getting five steals. I don't expect five
steals every game, but I feel like you got a
little bit of what each player was brought in to do,
whether on the defensive side of the ball or the
offensive side of the ball. And you know, a lot
of fans can get their hopes up, and I would
(06:07):
completely understand it, but we got to remember where this
team was after they beat Georgia Tech by like thirty
points last year in the regular season, and you're thinking,
this is the top ten team. They're going to be
top three team in the Big Twelve, and they're going
to be a four seed in the NCAA tournament, and
then the Big Twelve schedule starts and it all just
goes downhill. So you really have to look at it
(06:29):
as two separate seasons, the non conference first. The conference season.
When they start in the Big twelfth season and they
rattle off three to four wins in a row, that's
when you can kind of get your hopes up and say, Okay,
we've got a pretty good team on our hands.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Schedule coming up Friday, they're going to be at Arkansas
taking on John Calipari's bunch. The regular season starts on
November third, and it's a quick build up because on
the eleventh of November you got to play Dayton. On
the twenty first, you got to Ranke take on eleventh
ranked Louisville, So it does pick up quickly. Let's say
between now and the Dayton game. What's the biggest thing
that needs to be answered for you?
Speaker 3 (07:05):
How we already talked about it with Dalen Haynes. How
is the inside offense working and kind of adjusting to
not having Haynes. What does Baba Miller look like? Because
he was kind of brought in as that point forward
type guy who can dribble. He's really good offensively, he
can shoot the three, he can shoot mid ranges. But
we saw him against Michigan and he was really really
(07:28):
good on the defense of the offensive boards. He was
good down low. The biggest thing I'm going to be
looking for is how good they are inside because getting
those points and being efficient down there will just feed
so much more for the offense. And then you also
have to look at how are they defensively because you
have the really talented defender and Cyncia Harris who can
(07:49):
get those steals, and David Thomas is good defensively, but
how are you playing as a unit, because if you
give up ninety eight points a game, it's probably not
going to be a very pretty season. And I know
west Miller was not had at all about how they
played defensively, especially on some of their closeouts. So just
how they're gelling defensively, how they're switching, and how their
chemistry is is going to be one of the bigger
(08:10):
things that I'm looking for.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Gisell James is not with the team, day Dae Thomas
is is their depth there at point guard that you
believe they're going to be okay at that position or
is that still need to play itself out.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
I think it needs to play itself out, because right now,
based off the Michigan game, it's looking like the point
guards are going to be Kerk Prisa and Keishan Taillory
and Dayda Thomas is going to see a lot of
action at the two, and Sincere Harris is going to
see a lot of action at the two, Shawn of
Bible play the two and the three. So looking at
Keischan Tillery and how he kind of facilitates himself as
(08:46):
another big storyline that you need to watch for the
next or for the first two weeks of the season.
He doesn't have to go out and average twelve points
a game and eight assists, But kind of just facilitating
the offense getting those four or five assists game and
then not turning the ball over a ton is what's
really going to help, you, see, because if there's a
(09:07):
steep drop off from crease artillery, it's going to hurt
the momentum and everything's just going to go downhill. But
if he can just take care of the ball, play
within himself, don't try to do something that he's not
asked to do. I think that the offense should be
able to run pretty well because that's what he was
recruited for, was would be a really good offensive player
and facility at the offense.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Keegan. On the other side of this is football happening
this weekend, Baylor coming into town, the top passing offense
in the country. Are you buying into what you're seeing
from the Cincinnati bearcatch right now?
Speaker 3 (09:42):
I am, And I wrote a story after they beat
Boling Green only my only fourteen points, I think, and
everyone is freaking out. I said don't write these guys
off yet, Like I know, this wasn't a pretty showing,
but just don't write them off. And since game, they're
four and oh in six and one and or five
(10:04):
and oh, four and oh in the Big twelve, and
they're ranked number twenty one, And I just saw too
much talent. I knew there was too much talent on
this team for them to be disappointing. And it's on
both sides of the ball. I love the quarterback play.
I love how he's stretching the ball downfield efficiently while
also not having that many turnover worth he plays and
(10:26):
only wondering reception on the season. They're running back tandem
is kind of going back and forth, but who's performing better,
which I think is a really big thing. And then
the wide receiver corps is awesome. I mean, Jeff Caldwell,
you know, with Jennings, Cyrus, Allen, Caleb Goody, Isaiah Johnson,
Joe Royer, you're legitimately sixt deep that pass catcher. I
(10:46):
love how they're using Royer in the red zone. I
love how they're disguising him as a blocker initially and
then he breaks out and gets those easy receptions. Everything
is working really, really well. I'll be interested to see
how the defense reacts because again to Oklahoma State, it
was probably the worst defensive effort of the season and
just how they tackled in oklandm the State was able
to run basically wherever they wanted to Baylor really really
(11:09):
high powered offense. Can you get another interception to seal
the game late? Can you kind of shut down the
run game for Storry Robinson in with in the stakes.
There's a lot of questions, but I'm I'm confident that
UC's probably gonna win this week and then go into
a huge game against Utah next week.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Kegan Dante Corleone is not playing a ton of snaps,
and I feel like when he's not in the three
three fives just not as effective. If you don't have
a dominant nose, it's hard in the three three five
because you're not requiring as many offensive linemen to block
Dante Corleone and you're getting to the second level. Could
we see a situation where you see some four down
(11:48):
fronts when Dante Corleone isn't in. Do you do you
think that they have to make an adjustment based on
what you've seen other teams do.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Not really, because they're being pretty open with the fact
that they play a loose defense up into the red zone,
so they're kind of saying, hey, from from the twenty
to the twenty, offenses are going to be able to
move the ball, But it's what happens within those twenty
to the end zone that's what's important. So that's why
you're seeing Dante really not play a lot of the
(12:16):
drive until they get to the red zone and then
he comes in and maybe it's a third and seven
and he needs to reach some havoc on a pass
play and then he comes in. I think right now
they're putting him in a position to kind of be
as fresh as possible, and I don't really disagree with that,
especially if you're just going to allow so many yards
on the rest of the drive. So I don't know
(12:39):
if he's one hundred percent healthy after the ankle thing.
He could be only about ninety percent and he can't
really forty five steps a game. But I think what's
what they're doing right now is at least working as
then they're not losing games because of it. But it'll
be interesting to see what they do against Bail and
(13:00):
a good quarterback and a really talented offense. But I
don't think that playing him forty to forty five snaps
a game is a solution. And I also don't think
that the four man front kind of deviating with the
identity of your defense is a solution either.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
One more thing on the defense, is there any concern
to you. We've seen this defense not only susceptible to
giving up yards, they also at times just give up
time consuming drives. A fifteen play drive, a nineteen play drive,
drives that are taking eight or nine minutes. And while
the offense is operating at the way they are, or
they're operating with a lead, it's different. Do you worry
(13:37):
about that strategy if a team takes a lead against
the Bearcats and all of a sudden, you're limiting possessions
for the offense.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Yeah. Absolutely. I think it strengths your margin of air
a little bit. Because Sadderfield said, they're a rhythm offense,
and if you're not in a rhythm, they might struggle
a little bit. And we saw it against Oklahoma State
at the start of the third order was rough until
Strosby makes maybe the best bar of the season on
that third and sixteen for a first time that Jeff
(14:06):
cauldboll and then everything's rolling and they getting the end zone,
and then the pick six happens when the game is
pretty much over. So when you're playing a good team
like Baylor, like Utah DYU TCU like they have coming
down the stretch, that's something that you're really going to
have to look out for. And I think time of
possession it doesn't matter to some people as much as
(14:27):
others as long as your offense is coming, but it's
kind of it's kind of taken away from itself when
you have that rhythm offense. So I think the third
down calls are interesting to me. On defense, maybe they
try something else, maybe they try to get up to
the quarterback a little bit more and just force an
incompletion or throwaway. But if you can be better on
(14:51):
third down and get off the field and then the
offense can get going. That's why I feel like that's
part you're seeing UC take those very quick fourteen, seventeen,
twenty one point leads in games, and then you can
kind of maybe be a lesson to be less aggressive
in the second half and then played just good enough
to win, like he's seen against Iowa State and other teams.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Keegan, Lastly, we know what the offense has been and
Scott Souderfield has a huge hand in that, and swersby
the offensive line has been great. You mentioned Royer, the
dual threat running back, the weapons on the outside. How
important is it for you what we've seen from the
special teams unit because a year ago it was a disaster.
A year ago, special teams limited this team. The mistakes
(15:36):
before the half or a special team's blunder that completely
changed the momentum. We've talked defense, we talk a ton
of offense. How impressive is special team's been with what
they've been able to do.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
I think it's to your point. I think special teams
lost the games last year. I mean, go back to
the Iowa State game. In the last four games of
the season. That's why a lot of people are pounding
the drum for Max Fletcher to go out in punt
because it was pretty apparent that Mason after that tackle
against West Virginia, he had something going on with his
ribs and it didn't seem like he was one hundred percent.
(16:10):
His punts dropped way down on your yards per average
or average yards per punt, and you're just giving the
other team great field position on basically every drive. It
puts so much pressure on your defense, and then it
puts so much pressure on your offense. And I think
everything's just kind of working together this year and that
(16:31):
if there's some pressure on the offense, they have the
Jimmies and Joe's to go and get a first down
and get the offense rolling and make a big play.
But what Luke Paskal has done has been a revelation
because I mean, I'm not going to sit here and
say that the special teams is like elite. I mean,
they have a kicker who hasn't missed the field goal,
and they have a punter who booms it. They still
(16:52):
haven't returned anything for touchdowns or you know that kind
of part of it, the blocking. There's still penalties and
stuff like that. But if you can have average special teams,
it helps your team so much compared to having a
bad special team. I mean, they could have won two
or three more games last year if you even had an
average special teams. And you're starting to see the difference
that that can make on the team.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
Kegan, you're the best man. Kegan nickoson Bearcat Journal dot com.
What are you working on and what's the easiest way
for folks to follow along with your work.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
Yeah, I'm going to have a big toe of media
days notebook up here in the next couple hours. Got
the chance to talk to kirkree So one on one.
Talked about his journey recently lost his grandfather who was
a big, big part of his life, and kind of
coming off a year where he had to miss basically
the whole season after an injury on Kentucky and he
(17:44):
had never had to go through that, so kind of
battling through that, and he said he feels like a
freshman right now despite being in the sixth year. So
that's going to come out in the next couple of days.
Make sure you subscribe to Bearcat Journal and then you
can follow me out. King nickoson forty two on Twitter.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
KEI can you're the best man? Well, I'll see you
this weekend.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
Yeah, see you, say Dunny.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
There he is. Keegan nickoson Bearcat Journal dot com. Always
always appreciate Keegan's time, especially why he's on the road
at Big twelve media Day happening right now. We'll take
a break we'll come back. I've got some NFL trade
deadline conversation to dive into next on the Home of
the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Now your chance to win one thousand dollars entered this
nationwide keyword on our website. Check that's check enter it.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Welcome back since e three to sixty ESBN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station, thanks to our good friends at Penn Station.
How about this from the NFL today. Austin, Jeremy Fallon,
Matt Bowen got together and they started looking at the
upcoming trade deadline in the NFL, which happens to be
on Tuesday, November four, worth at four o'clock. And we
(19:02):
mentioned this yesterday. That is right after two days after
the Bengals play the Bears at home. If you beat
the Jets, beat the Bears, you'd be five and four
at that point. There's the trade deadline. Made the conversation
yesterday that you don't have to wait until then to
be active. But on this list Austin, they put top
the top twenty five players who could be on the move,
(19:23):
and out of the twenty five players listed, three Cincinnati
Bengals made the list.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
Three Bengals that could be traded.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Yes. Number twenty on the list Cam Taylor Britt. They
predict a twenty five percent chance that Cam Taylor Britt
has traded. Team fits include the Colts, Commanders, and Eagles.
Obviously this comes up because he was a healthy scratch
against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Has shown flashes but has not
(19:53):
been consistent. That is the term they use today. Those
yeah about Cam Taylor Brit.
Speaker 5 (19:58):
Those a Bengals today reporting that Cam Taylor Britt has
spent a lot of time on special teams.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
Okay, so find a way he's.
Speaker 5 (20:07):
In the doghouse, like in the doghouse of being in
the doghouse. Remember you're a healthy scratch. I mean that's
your Maine Burton levels of doghouse. Yep uh, He's got
a lot of work to do.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
Number eleven on this list and a sixty chance as
they predict of getting traded Logan Wilson. Now we've seen
Austin the Bengals are going younger at linebacker. Would you
be willing to move on from Logan Wilson? He has
(20:39):
a base salary next year of six million, Like he's
a three down guy. He has been phenomenal. I think
for the Cincinnati Bengals, they list team fits as the Cowboys,
forty nine Ers, Bills, and Colts. Obviously the cults are
going to be on all these because of Lou and Rumo.
Would you be comfortable if this team was five and
four and moved on from.
Speaker 5 (20:59):
Logan Will No, I wouldn't, and the reason for that
being they don't have any depth at that position.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
Zero.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
Like I love Logan Wilson, and I can admit that
maybe not the same player that he was a couple
of years ago, and that injury he had last year
is a lot more serious than people realized. And yeah,
he's lost a bit of a step. Your other linebackers
are Shaka Hayward and or In Burks well outside of
Demetrius Knight and Barrett Carter. Yeah, So unless it is
(21:31):
an offer that you just cannot refuse whatsoever, you know,
if somebody can give you a third round pick for him,
then take it right. But if it's you know, more
than that, I don't know that the risk is worth
the reward. I don't think it is. It's like, if
you look across teams in the NFL right now, one
of the big issues is depth. Like it's not a
sexy topic in the offseason, but it's incredibly important to
(21:53):
talk about a team's depth. I don't think Buffalo has
great depth. The Eagles are dealing with depth issues on
their defensive line right now. Injuries happen across the NFL.
In your depth and your development of said depth is
what makes good football teams great. The Bengals don't have
enough depth at that position to move on from Logan Wilson,
(22:13):
in my opinion.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
Lastly on this list, let me give you the top ten.
Jermaine Johnson, edge rusher from New York, Alonte Taylor corner
for the Saints. Jalen Phillips. You see this time of
the year, teams that are underachieving are probably going to
be moving on from players. Jalen Phillips is an edge
rusher for the Dolphins. Chris o'lave is on this list
at wide receiver. Mark Andrews the tight end for the
(22:36):
Baltimore Ravens, number six, number five, Jacobe Myers number four,
Rick Woolan corner for Seattle. Number three. Reese Hall of
the New York Jets. A player that I am a
little concerned about on Sunday, number two Jalen Waddle and
number one Trey Hendrickson. Trey Hendrickson would be far and
(22:59):
away the most attracted to trade target if the Bengals
entertained a deal. Now as of right now, the Bengals
don't have plans to trade Trey Hendrickson, but there would
be teams lining up with interest for Trey Hendrickson. And
this why Austin is I think the next two are important.
If you're four and five or shoot three and six
(23:20):
at the deadline, what's the point of holding on to
Trey Hendrickson? Correct? Now, if you're five and four, know
what you're giving up on Trey Hendrickson, right, But if
you are under five hundred, That's where I'm at. If
you're under five hundred the deadline, what is the benefit
of holding on to Trey Hendrickson?
Speaker 4 (23:36):
Correct?
Speaker 5 (23:37):
Yeah, I mean if you lose the next two and
you go to that bye week at three and six,
your season is basically over. Now, you still have all
those AFC North games ahead of you. I see that,
but I think at the minimum it's going to take
ten wins to get in, so you would have to
go it just doesn't matter seven and one over those
(23:58):
last eight games to get into play. I don't see
that happening if they are to lose the next two,
which means you have to shift almost immediately to how
can we get this team ready for next year? So
start evaluating, you start playing young players more than they
already have been, and you start acquiring draft picks, and
you would start by getting Trey Hendrickson off the books
(24:21):
and get whatever return you can get for him.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
Would that change your thought on Logan Wilson two if
they're four and five at the deadline.
Speaker 5 (24:27):
Yeah, yeah, I mean it's all all of it is
predicated as we talked about yesterday with the aggressive or
non aggressive, all of it's predicated on if you.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Win games without a doubt.
Speaker 5 (24:37):
Yeah, I mean clear, I can't imagine Logan Wilson's a
big part of the plan next year. I don't know
that the Bengals are looking at next year thinking Trey
is going to be here, right, I don't know that
they're looking at next year thinking Cam Taylor BRIT's going
to be here. So that's the reason those three guys
are on that list, And for two out of the three,
I'd remove Camp taylor Bridge just because of just the
(25:00):
doghouse that he's in. But for two of those three,
it really is predicated on whether or not they win games.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Correct, Let's take a break. When we come back, we'll
grab a phone call or too. Well, look at some
other NFL news and we've got quick hits coming up
as well. ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station, Thanks to
our friends at Penn Station.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
Until you seek wise since since he three sixty continues
on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
Welcome back. It's our three of three since he three
to sixty. Thanks to Penn Station. We got a few
minutes for a couple of phone calls here Austin. I
understand that we have a phone call on hold right now.
That's not just one person waiting on hold, but two.
Speaker 5 (25:45):
That's what I'm told our friend Greg and Sharonville alongside
his lovely wife, Greg and the missus.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
What's up?
Speaker 3 (25:53):
How's he going?
Speaker 6 (25:55):
Hey?
Speaker 7 (25:55):
I'm just glad to be talking to you. I said
all I had to say yesterday about you guys on
the talk. Just glad you guys or back together. Hey,
this is kind of my annual I can't stand Notre
Dame call to I had to get this in.
Speaker 8 (26:11):
Here.
Speaker 7 (26:11):
They are, They're favored in every game except the Miami game.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
They lose that.
Speaker 7 (26:15):
Yep, they lose the A and M at home, they
hung fifty on some dummies and two or three weeks
in a row whatever, and then you know, I'm here
and you know on on.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
The radio or whatever.
Speaker 7 (26:27):
Oh well, you know, if they can just win out, yep,
they'll be in. Well, sure they're going to be in.
They don't play anybody.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Boston College, Navy, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Stanford. They should went out
by double digits in every one of those games.
Speaker 7 (26:40):
But but you know the thing, you know, my dad,
he was a big Notre Dame fanny.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
No he didn't. You know, we always argue.
Speaker 7 (26:45):
I was talking about the week schedule, hand pick schedule.
But you know the thing is they don't. They won't
play in the conference, so they don't have to play
a conference championship game. And you know myself, but you
know it's the rules. They can get in, they can.
Speaker 8 (27:00):
You know, get in any way you can get in.
Speaker 7 (27:02):
But anyway I think it's stakes. So anyway, uh, my
wife Julia, I would like to say a couple of words, Austin. Oh,
I'm sorry, Tony.
Speaker 9 (27:15):
First night streaking with both of you. Yes, I just
want to comment on Austin's telling the story about going
to Green Bay and touring through the stadium. I just
found that so interesting. I'm kind of a football fan,
but only for high school kids. Okay, so hear that story.
(27:37):
It's just kind of said, see, I like to go there,
even though I'm not that familiar with the team. But
I just wanted to tell you that was that was
so enlightening it and I almost felt like I was
right there as you went through all the parts of
the stadium.
Speaker 4 (27:52):
Oh well, that's that's very nice. Thank you.
Speaker 5 (27:54):
And yeah, even any type of football fan, high school
or anything else would just love it. And actually inside
that atrium there they have like the Wisconsin High School
Football College high School Football Coaches Hall of Fame as well.
So yeah, it's really really neat.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
Thank you. Yeah.
Speaker 9 (28:12):
So, anyway, so I always enjoy hearing the stories that
Greg tells me after I get that from my shopping anyway,
So I'm glad you guys are back.
Speaker 4 (28:26):
Oh, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
We appreciate both of you guys. Thanks for calling.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
All right, see you guys.
Speaker 4 (28:33):
That's awesome.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
I think that's a first that is. I love it.
That's fantastic. Good for Greg and Julia. She must be
shopping a lot, no kidding, what a world. I love this, Mike,
what's going on?
Speaker 8 (28:50):
Hey, fellas, I hope you're doing well. I was just
stunned at how wonderful that opening game was in the
NBA last night? Would you Houston and Okay? See that
was incredibly good.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
Yeah. I mean it's it's tough when you start a
season like that because the uh, the view is that, Okay,
this is gonna be a big year. Puts a lot
of pressure on all the other games as well.
Speaker 8 (29:13):
Yeah, it really does. I didn't make it for the
Lakers game. I saw the score, but the Golden State
whip him. I wonder if Steph went off last night.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
No, he only had twenty three points. Luca went off, Uh,
but Steph did. Jimmy Butler and Kaminga had a huge night.
I got asked today on on on social media, Mike.
If Mike calls, can you ask him if the home
dog strategy is also a go in the NBA as well?
Or is it strictly.
Speaker 8 (29:38):
Baseball absolutely not the NBA on the baseball and baseball only.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
Okay, there we go.
Speaker 8 (29:45):
Yep, Yeah, I tried horsing around with that, big mistake.
Big miss. Should have listened to the old man that
told me. He said, stick, I gave you a system.
Stick to the system, don't easy eight and you will
do well. Actually I had the dev eight. I think
I know everything and I don't know crap obviously. Anyway, Hey,
(30:07):
did you know that? So I heard Jaydon Daniels is
out for this game.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Mariota is going to start.
Speaker 8 (30:14):
McLaurin and Deebo are back. I think they said Deebos sandals.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
Austin mentioned earlier that Mariota has won a playoff game
at Arrowhead Stadium before, so he is a He is
a very good backup. There's a reason they pay him
to be the backup in Washington. You hope it's nothing
long term for Jadon Daniels. Uh, He's felt like his
season hasn't even begun to get off the the mat
yet because of the injuries he's had. But at the
same time, I think Mariota is a dangerous player when
(30:46):
when given the full complement of weapons, and he is.
Speaker 8 (30:49):
The Pride of Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a huge high school.
Speaker 3 (30:56):
Loved him.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
Loved him in Oregon too.
Speaker 8 (30:59):
Hey, I got something run by with this Jets game.
Well before I get to that real.
Speaker 6 (31:03):
Quick that Okay, the three top rank defenses overall based
on yards allowed totally yards allowed, well, the first.
Speaker 8 (31:16):
Three or the Browns, the Falcons, and the Houston Texans.
The Browns are giving up two hundred and fifty six
per game, Atlanta to sixty five, Denver three at two
seventy three, Houston at two seventy four. They rate the
Browns defensive line as the best line in the in
(31:38):
the NFL. And uh, hold on, I got this one
other set I wanted to share with you this, I know,
I got about eight second clip now, okay, U god game,
hold on, I get frustrated a heck. Anyway, I was
gonna say the Jets defense the total defense in ratings
(31:59):
for past and flushing defense, they're ranked sixteen.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Yep, right, Intal Bengals.
Speaker 8 (32:05):
Are ranked thirty first.
Speaker 6 (32:07):
This does not bogue.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
Well, yeah, Mike, I appreciate the call man.
Speaker 3 (32:11):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
The Bengals like, if you can't beat the O and
seven Jets, we got bigger problems. But it is. I
think it's more challenging than than maybe what the O
and seven record leads to. We got to get a break.
Quick Hits next finish up today's show on ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
From It's time for since the three sixty Quick Hits
on ESBN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
Mo's getting ready for a show. We don't have him
for quick Kits today. He's probably somewhere two days in
a row. Yeah, looks listen, the Knicks play tonight.
Speaker 4 (32:40):
You can't help, but you know he still works here,
right he does.
Speaker 2 (32:43):
Okay, Now his show is coming up in just a
few minutes right here in the centred seat that I'm
sitting in right now. Okay, the Moweger Show on ESPN
fifteen thirty is coming up next. Now it's a big
day obviously because Moe's Nicks start tonight.
Speaker 4 (32:55):
Right.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
I wasn't aware, Austin.
Speaker 5 (32:56):
I'm a big Knicks fan. Tonight, I wasn't aware.
Speaker 4 (33:00):
It is.
Speaker 2 (33:01):
I wasn't aware. The Knicks are one of like the
favorites in the East this year.
Speaker 5 (33:04):
Oh yeah, they had a good offseason. Uh, and obviously
there was talk about them potentially getting Yannis from the
Bucks is one of those teams, but they would have
to give up all of what makes their team good
and deep to get Yannis. MO would obviously know more.
But yeah, I mean so.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Obviously that it it doesn't hurt them that Tatum's out
for the year for the Celtics, right, Halliburton is out
for the Pacers.
Speaker 4 (33:28):
Sure, Kobe White's down for the first.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
Toby White Chicago. So who else in the East is
is a threat.
Speaker 4 (33:37):
The Milwaukee Bucks, I guess, but not really the Calves.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
The Caves had goodyear last year.
Speaker 5 (33:43):
There has not been a lot of talk about the Heat. Yeah,
but I do think Cleveland's one of those teams.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
Okay, what about the Charlotte Hornets.
Speaker 5 (33:51):
I don't know that I could name a Hornet to
be honest with you. Kem is Uh is one of
the ball Brothers still there?
Speaker 2 (33:57):
I think he's there, is Kema Backer. No, Kimba Walker.
Speaker 5 (33:59):
Yeah, I don't know if you're joking or not, because
I legit don't know anything about the Hornets.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
I don't think he's there anymore.
Speaker 5 (34:07):
I am the most casual NBA fan, Like I watched
most of last night as we talked about, but like,
you know, I'm not really following along the league transactions.
I like to tune in and be like, oh that guy.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
We did talk about it the ring ceremony last night,
as we mentioned earlier. Thankfully, finally someone has realized make
these big, extravagant rings, but also add a ring inside
of the ring that you can wear on a normal basis.
Speaker 4 (34:33):
You can actually wear.
Speaker 5 (34:34):
I know Dan Patrick has been talking about this for
a long time, and it just makes a lot of
sense to have something because we've seen it to the
point where some guys just put the ring on a
chain because you can't wear it on your hand, and
maybe you.
Speaker 2 (34:46):
Turn it into incredible stuff.
Speaker 5 (34:50):
Like our guy Joe Walter, he wears his AFC Championship
ring just about every single day as he should, and yeah,
as he should. And obviously it's not Super Bowl ring.
But even if he had gotten a super Bowl ring
back then, it wasn't big and bulky. And this whole
big thing, like part of the whole idea is that
it's something you can wear and you know, show off
(35:13):
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (35:14):
You know.
Speaker 5 (35:14):
When I was at the Packers Hall of Fame the
other week, they had all these different awards that and
basically pieces of jewelry that used to be the reward
for winning an MVP or winning the NFL Championship. Like
they had all these old watches from bart Starr watches
and like necklaces, like trinkets and rings from Vince Lombardi's collection. Yeah,
(35:37):
and it's amazing to see how much it's changed from
this little thing to that ginormous thing that is championship rings.
Speaker 2 (35:45):
What did you make? I know one of the things
you were looking forward to last night was Michael Jordan. Yeah,
and to sit down with Mike Tarico, and there's obviously
going to be more of these. I love the quote
of that he wished you could take the magic pill,
put the shorts on, and go out and play the game,
because that's who he is, the competitiveness to greatness. But
I also found it fascinating that he's just not picked
up a ball in quite some time. Yeah, Like Tarico's like,
(36:06):
come on, when's the last time, And he's like, well,
you're here. Do you see a hoop anywhere?
Speaker 3 (36:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (36:11):
He said he was at the Ryder Cup this past
year in the house that he rented out had a
basketball hoop and the guy that he rented it from
had like his grandkids or some kids over. Yeah, he
said he he kind of got put on the spot,
and he said was the most nervous he's been in
a long time.
Speaker 5 (36:26):
My question would be in that conversation, who did you
rent the house from? And who does he think he
is that he can ask Michael correct or basically tell
Michael Jordan. But I get to because I'm sure Jordan's
paying really nicely to stay at this guy's house.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
And that's what Jordan said last night. He's like, I
wasn't get in the place for free.
Speaker 4 (36:42):
He said, for it.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
You've already brought your grandkids over to meet him and
take pictures with him. Who do you think you are
to put Michael Jordan on the spot to ask him
to shoot a basketball?
Speaker 2 (36:53):
But I loved the most his response of I was
so nervous because those kids have been told story about
Michael Jordan and so they don't view him as the
older guy now they view him as the goat. M h.
He said he made the free throw.
Speaker 5 (37:06):
Of course, I thought it was cool. I saw a
tweet from Colin Keene, who is a rights for Sports
Illustrated and fan sided and stuff, and he said MJ
was nervous he'd missed that free throw and a bunch
of in front of a bunch of kids that had
never seen him play, and that it's the humility that
has always driven Jordan. Yeah, you know, once being undervalue,
(37:29):
the desire to prove himself. Very few stars have this
now everyone's coddled from a young age. This is Colin
Keene's words in the AAU era lebron has quote nothing
left to prove for years. He said that in his
own words, Curry has the humility, Brady has the humility,
Jordan has it. It's in most of the greats. I
(37:50):
thought that was a cool human moment from Michael Jeffrey Jordan.
I hope, by the way, that it's more than just
one sit down that they do snippets of.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
They already tease the next one of him talking about
load management and why it was important to him to
play every game. Yeah, who you think.
Speaker 4 (38:05):
That's a shot at probably half the league.
Speaker 2 (38:08):
Yep, He's the line I liked the most last night
was the drive and the fire to compete is what
he lives for and that's what he misses.
Speaker 5 (38:17):
He also talked about in the open about the contention
that you could feel on the court, the competitiveness between
his era and the era now, And I think that's true,
Like it's there are a lot of buddy buddy friendship
type of stuff in the league these days, and I
do like I like that to an extent, but also
wish it was a little bit more contentious.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
Those years man, where there was just genuine hate.
Speaker 4 (38:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (38:42):
They we've talked about this before in sports. Yeah, that
hate and that fire makes it even better because you
can sense that on the field, like man on the
court or on the field, these these teams or these
players hate each other.
Speaker 5 (38:56):
And they asked Steph Curry, you know, what were his
memories from the nineties when the NBA was on NBC
the first time, and he said, the rivalries like that
era of basketball and those type of rivalries. By the way, Nix,
we're talking about that load management. How about Mitchell Robinson
and Josh Hart both missing tonight's season opener due to
load management? What I think there's already load management the
(39:19):
first game of the year, or excuse me, Mitchell Robinson
not playing due to load management. Josh Hart has a
back injury.
Speaker 2 (39:26):
How can you do load management the first game of
the year.
Speaker 5 (39:28):
Apparently they practiced too hard in training camp. Well, Fibbs
is out, Mitchell Robinson load management game one. If I'm
Adam Silver, I'm picking up the phone, like, hey, what
are we doing? Who's the coach of the Knicks? Don Staley?
Speaker 4 (39:45):
Who is it? I actually don't know who the coach
of the Knicks is.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
I don't think it's Don Staley.
Speaker 4 (39:50):
Oh, they interviewed her.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
They they just went and got like another coach that's
been around for years. Mike Brown's the coach. Oh okay,
like Moe just walked in most Yeah, we got another
minute or two here here, I'm sorry, you're all rights?
Oh you're excited? The Knicks play tonight. I can't wait.
Speaker 4 (40:06):
What is miss Robinson out with load managed?
Speaker 2 (40:08):
He's not even have his headphones in there? What going
on here today? Mitchell Robinson is out tonight due to
load management game one? How can you be out game
one due to load management?
Speaker 10 (40:17):
So this is the strategy? So what did everybody say about?
Tibbs just runs his starters into the ground right, not
ready for the postseason, even though they were two wins
away from the NBA Finals. So the strategy this year
is not play any players who matter, got it? Sneak
in as the ten seed in the play in very Cincinnati.
Read sort of strategy we're going to employ here. See
the Bulls just get in. Yeah, and then let Jalen
(40:40):
Brunson and Mitchell Robinson and company take over.
Speaker 2 (40:43):
Before you take over here, what do you got on
your show today?
Speaker 10 (40:46):
We're gonna go to Kansas City. Oh big, twelve media days.
Speaker 4 (40:48):
Yes, Scott Springer is going to join us, love it.
Speaker 10 (40:50):
Danny Canell is going to be on the show.
Speaker 4 (40:52):
Nice.
Speaker 10 (40:53):
I think we have Chris Albright today GMFC Cincinnati, which
I promised yesterday and screwed up because I can't read
an email. We'll here.
Speaker 4 (41:01):
Joe Flacco. Yeah, I like that guy.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
You know, Austin came up with an idea because we
never got Locks of the Night sponsored. How about Jocks
of the Night. Is there a player in the association
tonight that you're looking forward to watching the most m
for me? Game one? I'm going Cooper Flag.
Speaker 10 (41:19):
That's the obvious answer, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (41:21):
But he's going against outside of Matas Bozalis.
Speaker 10 (41:23):
Yeah, I want the Spurs to be good so Wemby.
He's on TV a lot because.
Speaker 4 (41:31):
He is awesome to watch.
Speaker 10 (41:32):
Yeah, I was gonna say, Douce McBride, Okay, you're allowed.
Speaker 4 (41:36):
It's Jocks of the Night.
Speaker 2 (41:37):
The Night doesn't anything Jocks of the Knight.
Speaker 4 (41:41):
Been sitting on that one. Are you taking me to dinner?
Speaker 2 (41:42):
Tone?
Speaker 4 (41:44):
You gotta go to breakfast first.
Speaker 2 (41:46):
We've got a breakfast coming up down on the farm
right after I get the kids dropped off at school.
Speaker 4 (41:52):
The Mighty Rio brand.
Speaker 2 (41:54):
Things are happening here at at iHeart.
Speaker 4 (41:56):
I'm sorry for being late.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
No, that's fine, but an exciting I thought it the worst.
Speaker 5 (42:01):
I thought maybe you got can like Tony did. Yep,
at least you're still with us over time?
Speaker 3 (42:06):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (42:07):
Sending moment email right now just to make sure he's
next the Moeger Show.
Speaker 10 (42:12):
I thought I was going to be in New York
for the Marconi's and was told last night.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
We need you here. ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati sports station
