Welcome to Katie r h Garden Line with Skip Richter's
shoes crazy.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Trip.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
Just watch him as wos so many good things to
sept crazy. You're not a sign sun Beamon down tweet.

Speaker 4 (00:41):
Hey, I got an idea. Let's talk about gardening today.
What do you think about that? Welcome to garden Line.
I'm your host, Skip Richter, and we are here for
the next four hours to talk about the things that
are most of interest to you. And I say that
because you get to call in and tell me what
we're talk about. As long as it's related to gardening,

(01:03):
we will entertain the question and take it from there. Hey,
if you want to call me seven one three two
one two k t r H seven one three two
one two k t r H. We're going to just
jump right out here on the phones and go to
our early bird of the day, and that would be
Bruce in Memorial. Hello Bruce, Welcome to garden Line.

Speaker 5 (01:24):
Good mornings, kid. How are you doing today?

Speaker 4 (01:27):
I'm well, thank you.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
Okay, a question about growing citrus and containers. I'm going
to use probably about a twenty to twenty five gallon pot.
Recommendations for soil types.

Speaker 4 (01:40):
Uh, you know a good quality. Yeah, good well drained soil,
not too fine textured. A roast soil would be fine
for that. You could probably even do a veggie and
herb mix for that, one of those kinds of soils.
There is also, I know, with heirloom and with nature's
way they produce a fruit a soul or fruit growing

(02:00):
for making beds for fruit growing, and it would work
too as long in a container that large the thing
is having some chunkiness in it is kind of good
because it's going to settle down over time. And fruit
trees are a long term crop. So trying to, you know,
three years down the line, slide that thing out of
the container and then add some sow in the bottom

(02:23):
and repot it again, that's a little bit of work.
So we want to slow that process down and not
have to do it so often.

Speaker 5 (02:31):
Got it? Is there a best time to do that?
And are there better for oranges or mandarins? Is there
a better variety for growing in the container?

Speaker 4 (02:41):
You know, I like to see you or a memorial area.
I like satsumas. Satsumas are I wouldn't call them dwarf
if anything be eight feet tall, but or so, but
they're not as big as like oranges, for example, so
in a container, it's more doable to do a satsuma.
It's a mandarin tight, baggy skinned. If you go to

(03:02):
the store and buy those little oranges called QDs, the
ones that are so easy to peel, that's sort of
like a satsuma. Those aren't, but they're like them. Uh
so I like those anything like lemons are lemon. Some
of the limes can be grown in containers. I've got
a thornless slime in a container right now. See what else? Then?

(03:26):
The good centrus for them? It depends, I guess too,
on what what you wanna, what you want to eat.
But when you put a really a citrus tree that
wants to be twenty feet tall in a container, the
container will dwarfit. But it's a it's a little harder
to to manage.

Speaker 5 (03:41):
Okay, great, Is there a better time to do this?
I'm guessing for getting a selection of trees right now
is pretty tough.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
I know there's a lot of good selection still out
there at our garden centers and things, So I would
you know, I would not hesitate on a citrus to
go ahead and get it. It'll have some time to
grow before winter slows it down, and that way you'll
be off to a good start for next year. Maybe
when you first pot it up, make sure that you're

(04:12):
doing a couple of things. Number one, it's got good sunlight,
so it needs good sun exposure in order to produce well.
And then just be ready to bring it in if
you have one of those winners that is going to
endanger the kind of fruit you know, a citrus berries,
I assume actually happens to be a little heartier too,
which is another nice thing about it.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
All right, well, thank you so much, skim all.

Speaker 4 (04:38):
Right, Bruce, Well that takes care of everything. But you
agree and to send me half of the fruit off
your tree when it starts producing, and we'll call it even.
Have a good time and good luck with that. There
you go, there you go, yes, sir, you take care,
all right. There you have it. Citrus in a container.
You know, we can grow. You can just back grow

(05:00):
anything in a container if the container is large enough.
Some things are not gonna be very productive. That comes
to vegetables. I would try pretty much any vegetable in
a container. There is one that I'm not gonna bother with,
although you could do it, and that's sweet corn. Sweet corn.
You need a patch of it so that as the
pollen falls, all the ears get pollinated really well. And

(05:22):
that's why we say when you plant sweet corn, don't
plant one row. Plant at least there are four rows wide.
In that way, whichever way the wind's going, you're gonna
get pollination. But in a container that's just not that productive.
I mean, if you want six ears or three years
of corn or something, that's fine, but I wouldn't bother with.
There is a variety thus all one time called on deck,

(05:43):
and it was bread. It's a shorter variety, nothing special
about it as far as eating. But it was bread
to be grown in a container. I guess that's why
they called it on deck. But anyway, yeah, pretty much
anything in the vegetables and herbs, flowers and even a
lot of kind fruit trees and a container. There you

(06:03):
have it. You are listening to garden Line the phone
number seven one three two one two kt r H
seven one three two one two kt r H. Nitrofiss
has a product that is an organic product called sweet Green.
Now they already did their homework on this one. A
lot of a lot of years of research on it.
It's basically a molasses based, a sugar based product with

(06:27):
microbial activity turning it into an eleven percent nitrogen plant food.
And it dissolves the way really well, goes in the
ground quickly, and it's not a slow release fertilizer generally,
that's what I sayd in the summer. But let's say
you did some fertilizing and you know you're getting to
a point where you just want to do a little

(06:48):
bit here and there. Not not something that is going
to last for a whole bunch of months. If all
fertilizing's come in whatnot. Sweet Green is a good one
to use. I've seen people use it to take a
yard that had some areas that kind of needed a
boost and give them a little boost. You just do
it in small doses. You know, you don't put out
tons of it. A little bit out and a little
bit later, six weeks, two months later, a little bit

(07:11):
more out. And it's a great product, smells wonderful, and
again it is morganic type products, so that works well.
You're going to find Nitrofosh products in places like Fisher's Hardware,
both the ones in Pasadena Laporte, my Bellevue and Baytown
they all carry It's Stanton Shopping Center, Don and Alvin
Lake Hardware. We've got a bunch of those as well. Angleton,
there's one in Clute also, they carry nitrofosh products. Let's

(07:37):
head back to the phone's right quick here and we're
going to go to stagecoach and talk to Terry. Hello, Terry,
good morning.

Speaker 6 (07:46):
Got a question for you. My lawn actually is doing
really well this year, but I'm wondering if I need
to do like midsummer fertilization. I've you know, I've heard
different things, Oh, I don't do that, You're going to
burn it out, blah blah blah. And then so a
good idea, what kind of fertilizers do you use? And
then kind of more to micro level, do it when

(08:07):
we're gonna get a little bit of rain. Absolutely, don't
do it when we're gonna hit a hot spell. Is
there kind of you know, a window of time that's
best to do it within the summer here, Those.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
Are all good, good questions. When was the last time
you fertilized it? And did you use something slow release
or fast release when you did?

Speaker 6 (08:26):
Yeah, I gotta be honest, I kind of just by
random fertilizers that.

Speaker 7 (08:30):
I find not sale. Okay, it was probably.

Speaker 6 (08:33):
Like four months ago.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
Four months okay, yeah, so you definitely could could fertilize
it again. We're sitting here now in mid July, and uh,
a lot of our good slow release fertilizers would work
really well for that. Uh. There is a product from
the folks at Nike Foss called UH Slow and Easy.
It's a silver bag h and it'll release over about

(08:59):
four months, so you would be getting at the would
bebe August, September even up to October even and so
that would carry you right up until you're going to
do fall fertilization. And have you ever seen my schedule
online by a New Chance? I have not, Okay, So
jot down gardening with skip dot com and when you

(09:21):
get there, look at the publications or it just says
on the front page the schedules, and I've got a
couple of them for lawns. One of them is the
lawn Care Schedule, and it tells you through the year
what fertilizers and when to ply them and whatnot. And
I would recommend you do that. The silver bag by
nitrofoss is on there, and then in fall we switched

(09:45):
to a slightly different balance of nutrients for going into
winter preparing for one heartiness. And so now is still
the time to do that sober bag if you'd like
to do that.

Speaker 6 (09:58):
Super turf okay, so fertilizer, yes, I'll look at that.
I'll look for that nitrofast stuff. And then it doesn't
sound like I should do it, you know, during a
really hot period, during a really wet period. It really
makes no difference.

Speaker 4 (10:15):
It makes no difference. Stuff. It's slow, yeah, it's slow release.
The key is to use it at the proper rate. Now,
if you dump a ton of fertilizer on the roots
of a plant, a synthetic fertilizer, it's gonna burn it.
And so you don't want to do that. So uh yeah,
that's what I do. Hey, Terry, I'm up against a
heart break. But good luck with that. And check out

(10:37):
that schedule. You're gonna find a lot of good information
on there, all free. All right, thank you, yes, sir,
thank you very much. Rundo break here, folks, Well, good morning, sleepyheads.
Let's get this done today. We got gardening to talk about.
Seven one three two one two ktr H give me
a call. We'd be glad to visit with you about
the kind of questions that you have. Listen, it is

(10:59):
hurricane season and it is also just plain storm season.
You don't have to have a hurricane to have a
storm that threatens your trees. And proper pruning, proper training
is very important. From the time you put a tree
in the ground, you need to be preparing that tree,
training that tree to be as strong as it can
the structural integrity of the tree. And affordable tree services

(11:20):
how to do that. Martin Spoonmore's company, They've been doing
this a long long time. They know how to do it. Now.
You go up in the tree, you make proper pruning cuts.
You know which ones to make, where to make them,
and in order to have a tree that has its
best chance of surviving when we get way too much
win which we get all the time. Now, if you've

(11:41):
never had your tree looked at, or if it's been
years since someone's looked at it, it's time to have
somebody to take a look at it. And Martin's a
great one to do that. They do trimming and feeding
and everything you need to do. To make your tree
survive and not follow in your house or God forbid
your neighbor's house. Three six nine nine two six six'.
Three that's seven to one three six two six six.

(12:02):
Three don't wait until it's too. Late Call martin Foror
doable tree. Service get on their. Schedule they can come
out and take a look at it and assess what
might be needed with your. Trees we're gonna go back
out of the phones, now, uh And i'm gonna head
over to the heights and talk With. Nancy, Hey, nancy good, Morning.

Speaker 8 (12:20):
Hey good.

Speaker 9 (12:20):
MORNING i don't know if this is gonna make sense or,
not BUT i had a side yard and it was
always covered with shade because we had a we have
a huge oak, tree and we lost the limb that
covered that that side, area so now it's all. Sunny
SO i was trying to grow some. Grass SO i

(12:41):
heard you guys one week talk about bahia, GRASS i,
believe and you know the guy he, Said, oh that'll
be great for your, application blah blah, Blah AND i, said,
Oh i'll go get some of. That SO i went
and got like a that grass the, plant and SO

(13:01):
i did get. THAT i seed at the. Yard and
then yesterday you were talking to a guy and he
said he had this weed coming up and he didn't
know what it, was and he, said, oh that sounds
Like bahia. Grass And i'm, like oh my, GOSH i
just threw a bunch of that seed down on my side.
Yard So i'm freaking.

Speaker 7 (13:23):
Out it's, like.

Speaker 9 (13:24):
Is it gonna be all weedy or? What is that
really a good grass or?

Speaker 4 (13:29):
What, okay, yeah it makes all. Sense so here here's the.
Thing every kind of turf has its pros and. Cons
kind of like, people we got our strong points that
are not so strong, points and uh so for By her,
grass it's pros ARE. U it is drought. Resistant it

(13:53):
is very. TOUGH i mean you could park cars on
it and drive on it and it would it would survive.
Somehow it doesn't require a lot of JUST tlc care
all the. Time but it's negative is it sends. Up
it doesn't make a nice soft turf like you would,
want like kids will want to roll around and play

(14:14):
on and, things and it sends up seed heads a
day after you mow, it and they'll come, up you,
know eighteen inches or twelve inches high above the above the,
ground and so it's always looking like you need to mow.
It and it's not that, leaves it's the seed heads
that are the big. Problem and so here In texas
it's not listed among our turf, species but In florida it.

(14:36):
Is and so you get a droughty sandy sol like,
that and it'll do. Well i've seen it. Here it
grows well. Here i've seen it used as a parking
lot for A christmas tree, farm for. Example that's a
good use for. Beheagrass you, know you just put it out.
There you don't worry about. It but if you want a,
LAWN i would steer you in a different direction and
you can get even though you just since you just started,

(14:57):
seating it's not going to be hard to kill. It
if you want to come back with some type of a.
Sod and that could Be Saint, augustine that could Be zoisio,
grass it could be. Bermuda unless it was a special,
SITUATION i wouldn't recommend the bermuda on that. Sideyard but,
yeah that's an, okay that's the short of.

Speaker 9 (15:18):
It, Okay NOW i do have a little bit of a,
problem you, SAKE i can get rid of it because
it's kind of in their early. Stages BUT i can't
use any type of herb aside on. IT i guess
that's what it's called because we have this huge oak.
Tree even though that that one limb's gone from, there

(15:38):
it does cover the rest of the area AND i
don't want to damage the roots of the. TREE i,
mean this thing is. Huge it's, OH i.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
Understand but if you use the right, herbicide and do
you use them, properly you're not going to hurt that. Tree,
okay we're gonna you're you're going to be spraying a
product to kill the grass and it'll just be a
very fine, spray just missed it onto the, root the
leaves of the. Grass you're not drenching. It you're just

(16:08):
putting a little on, there and it'll be just. Fine
you will not hurt your tree if you do. That,
so but the thing, is don't give it too much.
Time but hair grass is not easy to. Kill there
are products that do, it but the products that kill
established bear grass that can be kind of a problem
in terms of some of our woody. Ornamentals so if

(16:29):
you would go out, now there's a number of things
that you could use just to, spray but they would
be things that kill, everything so it would be Another i'm,
Sorry i'm confusing you by saying it that. Way they
would be products that would kill. It if it was
a grass or a broad leaf weed or whatever kind
of weed you have growing, there they would kill, that
and that's the kind you're going to have to go out.

(16:49):
For so that'd be something like a. Glyphosate that is the.
Brand it used to be that round up as. Glyphosate
now it's. Not but glyphosate is the. Ingredient but you
mix it according to the. Label you put it out
in a little, spray don't have, spray don't spray in
a windy day just because you want it just to
go right down on the behear grass and it will
kill it and then you can put what you want down.

Speaker 9 (17:12):
There, okay what about something called total weed and grass
control nature's. Creation it's it's a vinegar twenty. PERCENT i guess.

Speaker 4 (17:23):
If the behagrass seedlings, were if they were brand, new
a very young, tender it would probably kill. It but
once behea grass has a formed a plant and it's
got its rhizomes and, things it just that vinegar is
just going to burn the top of it and it'll
re sprout from the.

Speaker 9 (17:40):
Base, Okay, Well i'm looking at, THIS i can see the.
Season i'm thinking it's nothing's really happening. Here SO i
wonder if.

Speaker 4 (17:47):
It's much all, Right, well if you don't even have,
okay then in that, CASE i would just do the
sidding pretty. Quick and if if if the, area, yeah
BECAUSE i thought you already had grass up and. Growing
so if you don't have grass up and, growing you

(18:09):
can't spray. IT i, mean there's nothing to. Spray, Hey
i've got to run On. Nancy but a good luck with.
THAT i hope that clarifies it a little bit for.

Speaker 9 (18:17):
You it, Does thank, you.

Speaker 4 (18:20):
All, right you bet take. Care Ace hardware stores are
all over The Greater. Houstonario WHEN i Say Greater, Houstonario

weed or a pest or a. Disease how DO i?
Fertilize what about where DO i get those fertilizers that
skips talking about On? Guardline, Well Ace, hardware acehardwaretexes dot.
Com that's what it, is you, know things like a.
Microlife there's a good. Example microlife is the number one

(19:25):
sixty two four of the green bags and number one
selling organic fertilizer here in The Greater houston. Area and it.
Works you put it out, now and you put it
out again six eight weeks. Later it is just a
good all around fertilizer for all kinds of. Things but
microlife has many different. Products things to stimulate microbial activity
in the, soil things to help loosen the soil by

(19:46):
providing humus to the. Soil whether it's solid granular fertilizers you're,
spreading or whether it's liquids or spraying on plants or
spray on the. Soil microlife fertilizers or quality, products and
they do. Work i've used them in my. YARD i
still you them in my yard and they. WORK i
can tell you that from personal. Experience you can go
To Microlife fertilizer dot Com Microlife fertilizer dot com find

(20:08):
out where you can get, them which is, everywhere and
what products are. Available i'll be right. Back, hey welcome
back To Garden. Line what are you going to talk about? Today,
Well i'd like to give me a. Call seven one
three two one TWO ktrh seven one three two one
two k TR. H Southwest fertilizer has been A houston

(20:29):
lawn and garden tradition since nineteen fifty. FIVE i am
the fifth Garden line host going back To Dewey compton
days to speak For Southwest. Fertilizer, now you don't last
seventy years without doing things, right without treating customers, right
and without making sure when they come in they don't walk.
Out hearing you say, yeah we don't carry that. Here

(20:51):
they carry everything that you hear me talk about on
Garden line and. Way maybe that's just a fraction of
the things you'll find A Southwest Fertilizer so when you
need fertilizer for your, lawn ever option you're gonna want
is in there. Everyone if you need weed, control if
you need pest disease. Control it doesn't. Matter if you're

(21:12):
an organic gardener and you're looking for some of the
obscure products for organic gardening that you just can't find.
Everywhere bob's got Them Southwest Fertilizer, Corner abyssinet And, runwick
AND i didn't even get started on their ninety foot
wall of quality. TOOLS i mean everything you need. Forget
if they don't have, it you don't need. It how
about we just say it that. Way If salvallist doesn't have,
it you don't need. It Southwist fertilizer Dot com seven to,

(21:35):
one three six, six, six seventeen forty. Four save yourself
some trips and just stop there check them. Out if
you are wanting to do some landscape, revamping now is
a good time to begin getting everything ready to do that.
Planting you can plan in the summer, too by the,

(21:56):
Way but if you're just looking at a spot and
maybe they're you, know it just needs major. Renovation maybe
the drainage is poor and you got to get that fixed,
first and then you want to put beds, in and
then you want to you, know get make sure you
get a good irrigation system set up so it's efficient
and it works. Right pierscapes can do all of that and.
More they do landscape. Lighting, uh they even have a maintenance.

(22:17):
Service maybe you already got a landscape and you know
it's just become too much to be messing with taken
care of, well talk To. Pierscapes have them to do
their quarterly maintenance service in your beds and that what
that means is they come out once a. Quarter they
replenish the. Molts if there any weeds that have, appeared
they get those pulled. Out maybe the plants for the
season are starting to dwindle as the weather's changed and

(22:39):
it's time to put in new plants for the next.
Season annual color for, example they'll do. That pierscapes does it.
All just go to the website peerscapes dot com check
out the wonderful work they, do and then give them
a call two eight one three seven oh fifty. Sixty,
now a long term major renovation is a, process and
so don't. Delay go ahead and set down with. Them

(23:01):
maybe some design is going to be, needed and you
can visit with them about the options and plan for
a fall renovation that is just going to be stunning
and fallow is the best planting season of the. Year
so don't delay going out there talk to. THEM i
enjoy looking at quality. Landscape WHEN i drive around. TOWN

(23:22):
i always look at people's landscapes and gardens and. Things
that's WHY i always take not such direct. Route i'm
not a big fan of the highways and freeways and.
Stuff i'd rather drive through a neighborhood and just see
what's going. On AND i need that see a lot
of cool. Things you get a lot of good ideas.
Too that. Way you may see a landscape that's like

(23:45):
ninety percent of. It, YEAH i can't do that at my.
House but then you see this one little aspect of
it is LIKE i like. That maybe it's a. Plan
what is that beautiful fill in the blank that is
blooming at this month of the. YEAR i need one
of the get out there take pictures. Too by the, Way,
hey if you don't know what something, Is if you
got a picture and it's someone in, focus call us

(24:05):
up or at least WHERE i can make it, out
send it to me On. Guardline I'll i'll tell you
what it is and give you my comments on WHAT
i think about that. Plan all, right let's head out
To Austin county and we are going to visit With
stephen this. Morning Hello, steven welcome to Garden.

Speaker 7 (24:21):
Line, hey Miss, skip how are you.

Speaker 4 (24:23):
Doing i'm doing, good good.

Speaker 7 (24:27):
Good that's no. Help, yesterday yesterday, MORNING i was on the.
Highway I'm i'm a frequent but intermittent, listener SO i
catch your show in bits and. Pieces and yesterday you
mentioned about using the weed wiper and a nutsedge poison
on nuts edge growing in your. Lawn AND i actually
did the same thing this. Week and my question IS

(24:51):
i didn't mow the grass BECAUSE i wanted the nutsedge
to get up high enough WHERE i could get a
good shot at. It and now it's been a couple of,
days it is it okay to mow the long? Hour
DO i need to let that?

Speaker 4 (25:03):
Stuff you, Know i've Never i've never kind of tried
to parse through on exactly how long it needs to sit,
there BUT i would in my, YARD i would try
to give it about three or four days on the short.
End AND i realize that means your lawn's getting. Big
but you, know your number one goal is to get
rid of that nuts edge right now and you can
get back to a regular mowing schedule on your.

Speaker 2 (25:24):
Lawn.

Speaker 4 (25:24):
Uh and by the, way the weed wiper is, great
great for all. KINDS i use. It you, know like
when you're going up underneath the rose bush or something
to get a weed and you don't want to you
don't want to kill the rose bush with. Spray but
the product used for nuts, edge you can just get
a sprayer and do. That you'll use a lot more,
product uh that with the, sprayer then you do the.
Wiper but you could just get through and just squirt

(25:47):
it because it's not going to hurt your. Grass the,
product yes THAT i will not hurt your. Grass.

Speaker 7 (25:54):
Correct and one one other quick, thing one of my
between one of my yesterday, MORNING i came back to
the program AND i heard a very familiar, voice AND
i heard you talking to this, guy AND i thought
that sounds Like Dean nelson and a couple of a
couple of. Nuths, later you went to break and you
came back and, said, yeah back With dean and one
of the world's truly great, Guys Dean. Nelson he's just

(26:17):
in me.

Speaker 4 (26:17):

(32:03):
county he mentioned No Indean nelson for many, years many
decades Now Nelson Plant food is out there In Austin.
County that's where they produce their. Products but they are
sold all over the, place including out of state. Too
by the, way this company is there as famous in
some outer state locations as they are here because of
the quality products that they. Have they have the Turf

(32:26):
star line and slow And easy is the gradual release
one that you would be putting down, Now slow and
easy and it does just. That it's easy to put,
out it's spread it out there and gradually it's going
to feed over four months or more putting those nutrients
out in your. LAWN i love The Nutrient star. Line
those are the ones that come to the jars that
are very plant. Specific it doesn't mean you can only

(32:49):
use it on that, plant but like if you have a,
boogainvillia they have A boogavia. Food if you have a,
plumeria they have A plumeria, food WHICH i would say
use on all flowering. Tropicals and then they have palm
and ornamental grind. Food they've got vegetable food in the
Nutri star. Line that's all By, nelson sold all over.
TOWN i like the jars because they can be refilled
at about a dozen locations around. Town it's like when

(33:11):
you buy peanuts in the grocery. Store you, know you
pull the lever and fill up the bag with. Peanuts
you take your Old nelson jar in to one of these,
places pull the, handle refill. It it's less expensive and
you don't throw that plastic. Away what a win win,
smart very good way to, shop so check those. Out of,
course the most FAMOUS i think is their Color. Star

(33:32):
Color star line is just or a Color star product
itself is just. Amazing it really. Works someone asked me one,
time what do you use color star? On is there
anything with a flower or a colorful? Leaf even it's
just a good all around. Product it works. Well SO
i was on a. TRIP i was telling. YOU i

(33:52):
was on a trip for a, while AND i got
back AND i went out in the backyard and checked
my mosquito buckets because my granddaughter had gone out and
she got a mosquito. Bite she's a little bit, anything
this particular. Granddaughter AND i, say you, know, okay let's
go check that out and let me let me just

(34:13):
be realistic. Here there's no product that means you will
never have a fire ant or you will never have a. Mosquito,
okay that nature does not work that, way, unfortunately just
like we can't put something out and we have zero
weed in the, yard nothing can grow or come up
or anything because we put this thing. Out their exceptions to.
Those so went out and checked, them and sure enough they're.

(34:34):
Working AND i was out there for probably ten minutes
at a time of day when mosquitos would be out
and didn't get a, bite which is extra. Good BUT
i look in the buckets and these wriglars are wriggling.
Along you, know the mosquito, larvae and they're gonna a
mosquito wrigglars what makes an adult. Mosquito but my, BUCKETS

(34:55):
i love seeing regulars in them because they will never
turn into adult. Mosquitoes but they're sense that come out
of that bucket that make mosquitos want to go there
and lay. Eggs but when they, do they carry away
products that make other breeding places where mosquito larvae can't,
grow just like they can't in my, bucket and that.
Mosquito this is my favorite. Part if you hate mosquitos

(35:16):
and fire ants and things LIKE i. Do the mosquitoes
carry away a fungus that will infect their body and
within seven days killed that adult. Mosquito but we want
them to have a few days to go take those
things to other. Places and it's just. Cool it, works
AND i get them from. Pestpros Pest. Bros comes, out
they set them, up they take care of them and

(35:37):
everything like. That Pest Bros does all kinds of pest,
control not just. Mosquitoes But i'm just excited about those
buckets BECAUSE i used to be the guy that nuked
the yard with a foger trying to just be able
to get out there with family and enjoy a meal
in the back. Patio no, more got them shut down and,
yeah a mosquito here in, There but, look that's nature they.

addition to your. CALLS i got a few topics THAT
i would like to talk about THAT i think are very. Timely.
Uh we got a lot of things that we can

(36:44):
be doing in the landscape now to make life easier.
Later all, right so just stick around for. That i'll
be right. Back got to go get a cup of.

Speaker 10 (36:52):
Coffee welcome, Back welcome back to Guarden.

Speaker 4 (37:22):
Line, Folks i'm your host skip. Director we're here to
help you have a bountiful, garden a beautiful, landscape and
more fun in the. Process don't forget that gardening should be.
Fun it should it should be. Gratifying now nature trying
to conquer, nature first of, all is. Difficult. Uh and

(37:46):
and we're not going to do, it and probably don't
want to do. It but in your yard you want
to have some, order you, know you want grass to
grow here but not, there you. Know and they want
in your flower bed you want it lawn and so
on and and we're so we're asking nature to do
things nature doesn't necessarily want to. Do so we keep
get getting the opportunity to do a little work here

(38:07):
and there to keep it in. Order and some people
go the other. Direction they like nature to kind of run.
Wild and if the hoa isn't, around you can do
all kinds of. Things you have, cottage garden in the
front yard and all of. That it's what you think is. Beautiful,
hey it's your. Place LIKE i, said the usually the
hoa has an opinion about. That but, seriously you can

(38:29):
garden in any any way you. Want you can grow
the things you want to. Grow if you want to
make your whole backyard and orchard of, trees well do.
THAT i, mean if that appeals to. You most people
like a blend of, things you, know a little bit of,
groundcover a little bit of, lawn some, flowers maybe, herbs
and vegetables, definitely some trees and shrubs and other beautiful,
things and some fruit. Trees and you get to do

(38:50):
it however you. Want and that's the fun part about.
Gardening no two people do it exactly. Alike and you know,
WHAT i two. People no one person necessarily does it
exactly like the whole. Time i'm always changing WHAT i
do in my. Gardens i'll DECIDE i want to bed over.
THERE i think that area would look good with a

(39:11):
bed in. It Or i'll put a plan in and you,
know after a, while it's, like, yeah that's a good.
Plant BUT i have plants i'd rather. PLANT i want
to put them in my. YARD i don't have a,
spot so that one's got to. Go and it's a constant.
Changing it's kind of like interior, decorating you. KNOW i,
know sometimes we maybe the house was built in nineteen
sixty or, seventy and it was furnished with what harvest

(39:33):
gold and that avocado color that all the appliances were back,
Then and now you're wanting to change to something, else
and you do. Change put you put on, paint you
put up, wallpaper you take down. Wallpaper you, know it's a,
design it's what you live. There what do you want
it to look? Like your yard's the same? Way so
never feel like because something is, there it has to

(39:55):
stay that. Way it can always, change and our landscapes.
Evolve WHEN i grew up In South, texas we had
a bunch of shrubs in front of our house THAT
i remember going back After i'd gone off to college
and just kind of looking at the house and, going you,
know it is a constant fight to keep those shrubs
out of the eaves because they get so big over, decades,

(40:16):
Right and as a, result why not pull those out
and put in something that's dwarf or maybe there's a
new species that's really. Nice because there are always new
varieties and species coming, out why not revap it and
do some of those. Changes so think about. THAT i
bring it up now because fall is the best planning
season of the, Year so why not make some changes

(40:38):
in your landscape that make you, happy that cause the
esthetics that you, enjoy or that what do you want
people to see as they drive? By you, know what
do you want the place to look? Like maybe you don't,
care maybe you, do but fall is the time to
do that kind of. Planting if you've never had a vegetable,
garden how about starting with some containers on the. Patio

(40:58):
if you don't want to dig up the back just
just do, something try something new and enjoy. It we
got so many plants in so little. Time speaking of
how about a backyard bird? SANCTUARY i have been more
and more turning my backyard into a place that attracts
songbirds and my go to place for. That as you,
know if you listen to me as Wild Birds, unlimited

(41:21):
because they have the. Feeders i've. Got my favorite feeders
THAT i have THAT i own all came from Wild Birds.
Unlimited because they have quality stuff that really really. Works
they have advice for you when you're wanting to, know
how DO i do? This what DO i? Do what
bird is?

Speaker 3 (41:37):
This you?

Speaker 4 (41:37):
Know and so, on and it's just a place to.
Go and then when it comes to bird seed bird,
feed they have quality blends for different groups of, birds
and all birds don't eat the same. Thing and cheap
bird seed off the counter at big box or wherever you. GO,
yi it's, cheaper but not when you consider how much

(41:58):
does it cost per pound of seed that goes into
a bird's stomach because a lot of it gets kicked
off on the. GROUND i call them red. Bebies the
birds don't like That, milo and so as a, result
you get a high quality. Feed now suddenly it's not more.
Expensive it actually for pound of seed going into a,
bird you're getting a better, deal high quality, feed and
you have this big mess of things sprouting up from

(42:20):
under the. Feeders so it's Just Wildbirds unlimited right. Now
i'd say keep going with their nesting super. Blend it's
still season where birds are raising. Young you can go
TO wbu dot com forward Slash houston to find the
Six wallbirds near YOU wbu forward Slash. Houston that would Be, Kling,
kingwood Clear, Lake, Pearland West, Houston Southwest houston And. Cyprus

(42:44):
All Wildbirds unlimited stores and they're, fun big good thing
to do this. Afternoon we'd head out the phones now
To baytown and talk To. Doug, Hello, doug welcome to garden. Line,
hey good, Morning thank you you.

Speaker 11 (43:00):
BET i question, is, Yeah so for fifteen years we
had oleanders growing along a fence to provide a, screen
like a privacy. Screen they we get them to about
six feet high or so and keep them trimmed at that.
Level and about six years, ago six seven years, ago
one of those flash freezes killed them.

Speaker 4 (43:19):
All we're a fairly exposed area right on the.

Speaker 11 (43:21):
Water and since, then every Year i've tried different, things
AND i can't get anything since then to. Survive any
of these flash freezes were given in the. Winners i'm
just curious about a good recommendation for WHAT i can
get little. Bushes we have a lot of little bushes
that survive, easy but ones that can get to, yeah
five six feet high and make a little privacy screen

(43:43):
have zero. Luck over the last six, Years i've spent
a lot of money.

Speaker 4 (43:46):
Trying, yeah are You they're not the onlyanders didn't re
sprout from the. BASE i can understand the top getting
go they should. Resprout, well they.

Speaker 11 (43:57):
Were very old and, mature, right so they had, yeah gigantic.
Bases it was time to get those cleaned out, Anyway
but they died in one of the flask.

Speaker 4 (44:04):
Trees no big.

Speaker 11 (44:05):
Deal SO i planted new oleanders and they didn't make.
It and so for it seems like the established ones did,
okay but nothing new will get past year one or.

Speaker 9 (44:14):
Two.

Speaker 4 (44:16):
Okay, well there's a lot of great options out, there
and so you, KNOW i WOULD i would seriously consider
running over To seabrook over At Moss, nursery take a
look at the things that they. Have they're going to
have a number of good options for you on. It
there are many species that are. Evergreen that's probably what

(44:38):
you want because it's going to give you the the
year round screen since that's the goal of the hedge
that you could put. Out you, know we Have, holly's
we have things like southern wax. Myrder we've got even
the yoponds that will make a nice screening, plant and many.
Others BUT i WOULD i would talk to them because
if you take them a picture and show the where

(45:00):
they can see the spot where you want to put,
IT i think they can better select the right plant
to go in that. Spot BECAUSE i just did an
article For Texas gardener on using plants to screen a, view,
which by the, way you got to check it out
In Texas. Gardener but we talked, about you, know how
how does a plant need to be to effectively screen the,
view and some principles of that and. Whatnot if you

(45:24):
wanted something, faster you could do like an evergreen vine
on a taller trellis because it'll fill in fast and
then you put your little shrubs in in front of
it and by the time you know they get up large,
enough you can either leave or remove that trellis. Screen
But i've got some vines like that on kettle panels
or LifeLock panels that are up on strong posts and

(45:45):
therefore forming the screen for. Me so but the folks
At moss have unbelievable selection and some really good folks
that can help direct you to the right. One what
is the Name moss m Moss as Behind, Seabrook texas
On Toddville Toddville, road most. Nursery, yeah and it's eight,
acres so get ready to allow yourself some time to.

(46:09):
WANDER i will perfect all, right all, Right, doug thanks a,

out To cyprus and talk To. Joyce, Hello, Joyce welcome

Speaker 8 (48:11):
Line good.

Speaker 12 (48:12):
MORNING i have two. Questions the first is about a
fire bush which has not started blooming, yet AND i
forgot to, fertilize and now that it's been raining all the,
time CAN i put fertilizer in dolenor DO i have
to wait until the ground totally dries out and then
which has Been, okay you.

Speaker 4 (48:30):
Don't have to, wait just put put the fertilizer. Down, yeah.

Speaker 12 (48:34):
Okay and if colors start better or or miracle grow bloom, boosters.

Speaker 4 (48:40):
Definitely definitely the Color. Star, yeah definitely the Color. Star
it's part of the part Of Nelson Plant foods, products and,
uh it works very very. Well and in, fact you,
know you could use the color star on both the
krepe myrtle and the fire, bush or you Could they
do have a Separate nelson has a separate product that

(49:02):
would be for crepe myrtle and flowering. Trees that's the
name of, it crape myrtle and flowering. Trees but you
could just use the color straw on both of.

Speaker 12 (49:09):
Them, yes, SIR i did use the crate myrtle specific
one probably about the person may or, so and my
crate myrtle started blooming just, beautifully but now they've stopped
and they don't look.

Speaker 4 (49:22):
GOOD i, mean, yeah that's kind of. Well some of
that is. Typical crape myrtles generalize bloom about ninety days
about three months in the, summertime and so if they
play out a little earlier than, that part of it
could be the, variety but it also could just be you,
know after they, bloom they set, seeds and then all

(49:43):
the energy and, carbohydrates instead of going into more, blooms
goes into developing the seed pods that are on the
crpe myrtle and it's not practical to remove all the
seed pods every, year but if you, do you can
extend the bloom a little bit that. Way BUT i
think the main thing is good sunlight and good vigor
and that that's that's WHAT i would. Recommend and then

(50:04):
that color star will work just fine on your plants in.

Speaker 12 (50:08):
General should we use it again on THE crp myrtles
ert because usually we've only fertilized crape myrtles one time
before they start.

Speaker 4 (50:14):
Blooming when did you do it? First probably about.

Speaker 7 (50:18):
The first part Of.

Speaker 12 (50:19):
May you, know to give it a month spot a
month before they started.

Speaker 4 (50:22):
BLOOMING i don't, YEAH i don't think you're going to
get like a Late August september bloom out of them that,
Way SO i would probably hold. Off BUT i always
look at my plants and, say how do they, Look
are they, vigorous are they? Happy or do they need a?
Boost and they may make my decision that. Way BUT
i hope that helps joyce up, there and good luck
getting those things blooming for. You appreciate that Call Southwest

(50:46):
fertilizer the one stop for everything you. NEED i want
to talk about their tools a little. Bit uh they
have every kind of pruning tool and shovel. RAKES i
think of the word. Tool that's what they. HAVE i,
mean they have soil, knives one of my favorite tools of.
All they have the kneeling SEAT i always talk. About
you can flip it one way to, nil flip it
the other way to sit. On oh my, gosh it'll

(51:08):

didn't know why you need a knailing, SEAT i know
remember when that first. Happened quality brands Like falco And.

(51:29):

carl welcome to Garden.

Speaker 13 (51:55):
Line good, Morning Skip.

Speaker 4 (51:59):
Winning. Hello can you hear? Me how CAN? I, yes,
sir how CAN i?

Speaker 13 (52:04):
HELP i am a big gardening for several years And
i've got AND i like raised, beds BUT i want
to switch to treated. Lumber AND i want to know
if using treated lumber is adequate and okay for vegetable.

Speaker 4 (52:20):
Gardening, Okay well that is a can of worms, question
AND i could spend the whole show talking about, It
So i'm going to give you the fast. Answer most
people prefer not to use. It the old treated lumbers
were more dangerous than the modern treated. Lumbers they changed
what they, use the compound they used to. TREAT i

(52:42):
can't tell you use it or not use. It everybody
has their feelings about. It if you wanted to have
the treated lumber for the sake of it lasting, longer
you could also line the bed with a plastic just
to keep any. Migration but those things are designed to
minimize migration into the, soil because, otherwise if it least
out of the, boards then the boards will drop. Faster.

(53:04):
Uh and so, It LIKE i, said we could go
on and on about, it and people have strong feelings about.
It the bottom line is when you put wood in
contact with the, soil you got two. Options you can
use treated or you can use a naturally wrought resistant
wood which will not last as long as treated, will you,
know something like a cedar for, example or cypress, planks

(53:27):
but that that'll you have to you, know rob a
bank to get the money to pay for cypress. Planks so, sure, anyway,
yeah you make. It why not consider something? Else why
not like A vego garden. Bed vego beds are corrugated.

Speaker 13 (53:42):
Metal i've used, those And i've USED i have Used,
vego AND i do have some metal raised. Beds i'm
just looking at the cost of it to just see
IF i could just build something myself that didn't cost as.

Speaker 4 (53:55):
Much, yeah you, Could and, there you, know there's a
lot of brands out there on the. Market of all
that you have to consider cost short term and long term.
Too and Then i've made beds out of rock and
cinderblocks and all kinds of other, things and there it
gets into the ascetics as. Well BUT i think you're

(54:17):
on the right track just to go with what you're comfortable.
With AND i think you'll be. Fine i've Had i've
had beds over my life made out of rare road
ties and that's not something you want to put in your,
mouth and then untreated lumber for many many years of.
That so whatever you're comfortable. With but, yes you can do, that,

(54:38):
okay all, RIGHT i appreciate. It thank you so, Much.
Carl you, Bet, carl thank. YOU i WISH i had
time to unpack that further because it is a complicated
and controversial. Topic for. Sure if you have a problem
in your lawn with, insects maybe it's just fleas and,
ticks you, know fall off the dog and jump on
to come in your. House maybe it's things like sodweb

(55:00):
burs and chinch bugs and fire ants and. Others nitrovoss
bug Out max is a product that you put on
as a. Granule you water it in and it works
and it lasts. Too by the, Way nitavass bug out
max is a. Granule you're gonna find it it places
it's Own, nitropus which is a lot of Places plantation
ace hardware on out there In Richmond, rosenberg The Langham

(55:21):
Creek Ace hardware which is Near COPPERFIELD Rcw nursery On
Tomball parkway and Butt. Way those are all places you
can get nitrofoss products like the Bug Out max. Granules
we're gonna going out To cypress and visit With. Eric, Hello,
Eric welcome to. Gardener, Hey, skip just got a couple
questions for.

Speaker 14 (55:41):
You i've got a big water oak AND i noticed
when the u before the leaves came, out there was
one limb that had what's missletoe on? It and, uh
And i've got. Another i've got a neighbor that's two doors.
Down it's got a huge water oak that's covered with,
mistletoe and it's pretty much killed the. Tree So i'm
wondering when it's on, there if you somehow are able

(56:05):
to get it, off does that solve your? Problem or
is it still in the tree?

Speaker 4 (56:08):
Somehow, no it's in the. Tree it is a true.
Parasite it's not like ball. Moss it's just attached to
the branch and is not feeding off of the. Tree
mistletoe has essentially the equivalent of roots down in the tree.
Itself it in and of itself typically does not kill a,
tree but it is for some. People it's. Unsightly there's

(56:32):
not a good. Solution you, know if you had one
up in a, Tree i'd say go cut the limb
off below the mistletoe and that'll hold you. Better as
long as there's mistletoe. Nearby birds you are going to
eat the. Berries the berries are, sticky they even catch
on the bird's foot or, whatever and then they get
in the crevice of your bark and you're gonna, oh
it's like read seeds that are always going to be
planted in your. Tree and so there's not a good

(56:55):
long term. Solution there are products that will cause the
mistletoe to turn loose and fall. OUT i Believe i'd
have to go. LOOK i think it's floral that does.
That but, anyway but that doesn't kill. It it just
comes right.

Speaker 14 (57:07):
Back, okay, Okay so can you spray the tree or
is there something you could put in in the ground
that impacts the tree?

Speaker 1 (57:19):
Somehow and in that in that, regard not.

Speaker 4 (57:23):
In the ground and not in, Spraying i'm about twenty
seconds from a very hard break. Here i'll tell you
what hold, on And i'm gonna have my producer get
your email address AND i will send you a little
more information on the. Mistletoe since we're just running out
of time here on talking about. It thank you for
the call very, much. FOLKS i gotta, run got to
obey the clock here on, this but we're gonna take
our half hour. Break i'll be right back if you'd

Folks we are open for. Business one three two to
one TWO. Ktrh seven to one three two one TWO.
Ktrh if you had about three miles west Of tomball

(58:08):
On highway to twenty nine to TWENTY fm twenty nine to,
twenty you, know like you're on your way To, BUCkies,
yeah buy nos Or. BUCkies about three miles west To,
tumble you're gonna run INTO d AND D. Feed they're
on the left hand. SIDE d AND D feed's a
family owned and operated, feedstore been around so it's nineteen
eighty nine and it just keeps. Growing AND i mean
literally they added a section to the store last year

(58:30):
and the products they have are everything you need of
course the feed, store so you got all kinds of
feed and tack and everything else for all of your farm,
animals but also for your. Pets high quality lines for
pets as, well Like starpro And victor And diamond And.
Origin uh and my dogs always like it WHEN i
bring them a treat from. There they got some really
cool chew treats in there as. Well but if you

(58:52):
turn to the right when you walk, in you're going
to see this gardening section of products that you, know
something that's hard to. Find you, know it's just not
gonna find it just any. Place they're gonna have it
At Dandy. Feed they have a way of dealing with you,
know any kind of a weed or, brush or if
you're talking about diseases and. Insects if you're looking for
the PRODUCTS i talk about from nitrofoss From, microlife From

(59:16):
nelson like The Turf star line and The nelson plant
food jars From medina, products they have an excellent. Selection
they even have airloom soils by the. Bag they're some
of their products as. Well Dandy feed is a one stop,
shop friendly. Folks they get right down to business and
make sure you have the thing you need to solve
the problem that you're dealing with or to accomplish what

(59:38):

On highway twenty nine twenty go check them. Out it's
a great place those of you dealing with outside pest
like rodents and stuff around the. Property, boy that's another good.
One they have got you covered on those. Things. Well,

(01:00:00):
oh it was like going in there checking that. Out.
Uh you're listening To gardenline phone number seven one three
two one TWO ktrh if you'd like to give me a.
Call now that it has been, raining here come the mosquitoes.
Again they are hatching out every. Where talking to people
the other day about just getting literally, inundated they, say
we can't even go. Outside, yeah, yeah they just. Are

(01:00:22):
they're just. Everywhere you, know mosquitos like the cooler times a,
day end of the, day early in the. Day. Uh
and what do you, Do, well what you do is
make sure they don't have any water to breed and reproduce.
In and there's a product Called mosquito. DUNKS i had
them on the on the show not too many weeks
ago to just to talk about how these work and the.
Product it's basically a little beige doughnut floats in, water

(01:00:45):
covers about one hundred square feet of water surface square,
feet and lasts about a, month and it slowly releases
a natural. Disease it's not a. Poison it's a natural
disease of. Mosquitos so if if you put it in
a bird, bath it's not gonna hurt the, birds not
gonna hurt beneficial insects they come to get a little
bit of water. Either mosquito dunks are approved for use

(01:01:07):
in organic, production and they. Work that's the bottom. Line
so wherever they're standing, water you CAN i took a
mosquito dunk the other day and they needed a little
bit of it for a small, area AND i stood
a little hammer and cracked a corner off of it
and dropped it in there SO i could go on
two weeks of vacation AND i had water underneath my,
plants so they, could you, know, uh suck up water
during the TIME i was gone and not die TILL

(01:01:28):
i got. Back AND i throw a mosquita dunk piece in.
THERE i come, back there's no. More there's no regulars in,
there there's no mosquito larva in. It and it had
been weeks and it had been raining and there should
have been loaded With. Larva mosquito dunks. Work they're availabile
at these. Hardware they're available to feed STORES i talk
about on Garden. Line all our independent garden centers carry
them as. Well don't be A skeeter. Breeder that's. It

(01:01:53):
out now To kingwood and we're going to talk To. Joe, Hey,
joe welcome to Garden Good.

Speaker 1 (01:01:57):
Good, Morning. SKIP i Had i've used round up for
years with the old formulation with with no, problems and
UH i used since they changed the. FORMULA i went
to a to an off brand generic and tried it
and it didn't work with a. Darn SO i just
wanted to get a tip from me in what to

(01:02:17):
use on weeds in you, know in on my driveway
and patios and in concrete, areas not not areas around.

Speaker 4 (01:02:26):
Plants, Well, JOE i DON'T i don't know why the
off brand didn't. Work the ingredient is the. Ingredient, uh you,
know it's kind of like titlan all the. Stamenaphine whether
you buy it generic or name, brand it's the same. Ingredient.
Uh i'm not sure why that happened to, you BUT
i wouldn't give up on. That there are there are

(01:02:46):
brands that that still have the gloves set in. Them
you know a number of different ones out there Are
racers one that comes to, mind But Ace hardware has
one that's that's, Proprietary. Todace but that's. Work, now if
the weeds are, grassy there are a couple of products
that kill grasses, only and those products will work well

(01:03:08):
on those. Weeds if the weeds are broad, leaf they
are products that just work on broad leaf. Weeds but
if you want something to cross, over it's basically the
glyphosate and then there is another. Product oh my, gosh
it just jumped out of my. HEAD i can't believe that.
Happened it was about to come out my mouth and

(01:03:30):
it went right.

Speaker 2 (01:03:31):
Out of my.

Speaker 4 (01:03:31):
Head if you will go to my website gardening With
skip dot. Com on there you click on all publications
and there's a publications that says herbicide products for skip'sweed. Wiper,
basically it's not just for the weed, wiper but it's
a list like if it's woody shrubs and vines and
things with tubers and roots and, rhizomes UNDERGROUND a list an.

(01:03:53):
Ingredient if it's, grasses it lists to ingredients if it's
broadly if you have grasses and. BROADLY i just found
the one on looking for the gliphasates what we've been talking.
About glue phoscinate is different than glyphasate glue poscinate and
g l u F o S i N a tetcha

(01:04:13):
and would be a replacement for glyphas eate.

Speaker 1 (01:04:17):
And use a turbo or a sticker with it as
well as serve.

Speaker 4 (01:04:24):
Active it's always a good, idea, huh because some products
have a sticker in, them some. Don't but especially if
you're dealing with something with somewhat slick leaf or a
real hairy leaf where it holds a little spray droplets
up off the. Leaf spreader stickers always.

Speaker 1 (01:04:38):
Advised, okay thank, You, SKIP i appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (01:04:41):
All, right you, bet thanks for the. CALL i appreciate.

Speaker 5 (01:04:44):

little break. Here we're gonna come right back with your

(01:06:10):
calls in just a. Moment all, right, folks we're. Back
welcome back to The Garden. Line got plenty of stuff
still left talk about in some callers. Here we're gonna
get To. Uh seeing Them aultch down south Of houston
is your go to stop for everything you need to
get the foundation ready for a landscape. SUCCESS i don't
care if it's a vegetable, garden a flower, bed an herb. Bed,

(01:06:34):
uh if you're redoing the soil and you're gonna, replant
you're gonna fill in and let them out the lawn
and redo the. Lawn they cover it. All they have
mulches of all. Kinds you have lots of options. There
when you go, in you just explain to them what you.
Want you, say, WELL i want to grow such and
such and and they'll take you right to the product
that you. Need and it's all. Quality it's the stuff

(01:06:55):
That i'm happy to recommend here on Guarden. Line they,
carry for, example they carry the line from airloom. Soils
they have a number of airloom soils things, Available so
all you gotta do is give them a call or stop.
By let me give you the. Website that's the. Easiest
they're down ON fm twenty or five twenty one Near
highway six and two eighty eight Southeaston but it's cienamultch dot,

(01:07:19):
com siennamalt dot. Com it truly has a one stop.
Shop they carry all the FERTILIZERS i talk about on Garden.
Line so, you before you PLoP that poor plant into
an unprepared, plot go to. Sianamaltch set a foundation for
success and everybody will think you have a green. Thumb
but you just gave the plant what it. Wants remember
that's how it. Works all, Right we're going to go

(01:07:40):
To Spring branch now and talk To. Judy, Hey, judy
welcome to Garden.

Speaker 15 (01:07:43):
Line.

Speaker 4 (01:07:44):
Hi, oh thank. You my question is about my viburn.

Speaker 16 (01:07:48):
On it's about five feet tall and all of a
sudden it has a black powdery substance on the leaves
And i'm wondering what to do about.

Speaker 4 (01:07:59):
That, okay what you're seeing is called city, mold and
city mold grows on sugary. Substances and we have a
handful of insects that will secrete a sugary substance and
it lands on the leaves and as a, result you
see the city mold follow behind. It things that can

(01:08:21):
do that are, aphids that's a common one scale insects
can do. That White flies can do. That you'll know
white flies because you go out and kind of shake
the bush and these little white gnat like things come flying.
Out and mealy bugs can also do. That so it's
going to be one of those. Pests WHAT i would
recommend number, one if you can figure out which one it,

(01:08:43):
is it helps. Target it helps you target the right
product you, know to get.

Speaker 16 (01:08:49):
In BUT i do see the, tiny tiny white.

Speaker 4 (01:08:52):
Flies, okay that's probably what you. Doing, yeah that's probably
what you're dealing with them. There but. There if you've
got a bush and you have white, flies you can
repeatedly use a product sprayed upward underneath the leaves to
smother the whitefly eggs and. Pupa but you're going to

(01:09:13):
do that over and over and over again to break
the life. Cycle the alternative would be to put it
a systemic insecticide drenched into the soil so the plant
roots take it up like you mix it in a
watering can and drench it around the. Plant and now
the plumbing of the plant contains that poison for the
pests that are causing the city. Mold and when they

(01:09:36):
suck juice out of your, plant they get that poison
and it and it comes, up and that may be
that may be a better way to. Go you're not
spraying and spraying and spraying on it so, much but
that would be your. Options what's the name of, that.

Speaker 5 (01:09:52):
What's the name of?

Speaker 4 (01:09:53):
That the systemic? Product it could, Be, well there are
Number there are a number of. Ingredients one is meadow
cloprid and so if you just write DOWN I M
I D O m, midoh it's the only One i'm
aware of that begins with those. Letters there's another way
that is as a FATE ACE E P H A T.

(01:10:16):
E that's another, one, uh and then there's some. Others
but when you go to a good quality garden center
that knows what they're talking, about like our good mom
and pop independent garden centers, DO, uh they'll be able
to direct you to the thing that you. Need you're
gonna have ace hardware stores that are going to carry
those sort of. Things you, know where you are up

(01:10:37):
there In Spring. Grange you got a number of aces
not too far, away, Right, well thank you so, much all,
right good luck getting that under. Control appreciate, You bye.

andy AND i go wait way back back in the.
DAY i spent ABOUT i don't, know probably about twelve
years In austin working WITH Agr Life extension there And
andy was with a natural, gardener a great great if
you ever Visiting austin's a great place to. Go Visit
John Dromgill's Natural gardener over. There definitely a. Place but

(01:16:51):
as they, Say i've been Knowing andy for a long,
time so good to have you on the. Show. Yeah,
WELL i just thought we used some time today to
pick your brain about the things that might be going
on now out in the gardener that could. BE i,
know we have fall season coming on, us the very

(01:17:12):
best planning season of the, year although you can plant
twelve months out of the year here if you just
give them a LITTLE tlc in the. Summertime BUT i
want to talk about some of those kind of. Things
But i'd also like to visit a little bit about
a couple of questions That i've gotten about some of
The medina products and, things and maybe you could kind
of help help us understand. THAT i, know The medina

(01:17:33):
hash to grow is one of their oldest original, products
isn't that? Correct it is.

Speaker 15 (01:17:40):
Probably what put us on the map After Medinasol. Activator
the activator is definitely our oldest. Product and of, course,
okay we actually got our start With Madina Sool activator
On Garden. LINE i don't know that it was called
Garden line back When Dewey compton was on the, air
but he's actually who put that on the map and

(01:18:03):
and got it started out. There you, KNOW i don't
THINK i don't think he.

Speaker 4 (01:18:09):
COULD i don't think do he could sneeze without the
Word medina coming. Out he was he was a, big Big.

Speaker 15 (01:18:20):
It's kind of like you're broken in, here this whole fix,
it you.

Speaker 4 (01:18:23):
Know, yeah that's. Right but it'll work for everything we.

Speaker 7 (01:18:27):
Do, yeah, yeah it is so that.

Speaker 6 (01:18:33):
It.

Speaker 4 (01:18:33):
Is and, uh you guys have a lot of good.
Products i've been talking about some of them. Today uh but,
uh when when you think about when you think about
dealing with the plants THAT i, say dealing with, plants
trying to have success with plants and, things what are
some of the key ingredients that you think are important

(01:18:54):
in order to set that plant up for? Success AND
i know you've been a gardener for a long time as.
Well uh so any thoughts on?

Speaker 15 (01:19:00):
That, WELL i think that you can't go wrong with good.
Composts of, course is always the. Base to, me it's
kind of like making a roue in the. Kitchen it
starts with great soil. Buildings so getting you that base
to make this good ruse what's, important AND i think
compost is key at, that and then adding things to

(01:19:22):
help with the, compost whether that be something like another
product That medina doesn't, make like, azomite or we do
do some liquid humates and some molasses things to just
really build the soil and make the soil more and.
Rich and part of you, know being a gardener is
you know you have a gardener who wants it, overnight

(01:19:44):
and then you have a gardener who understands that it
takes time to make a good. SOIL i remember back
in the day WHEN i first started working For john
and you again going to The Natural. Gardener if you
looked at some of those, BEDS i mean they've been
around for over twenty years, now and they look like chocolate,

(01:20:04):
cake you, know because they've worked those beds year after
year after year and not necessarily adding heavy duty, fertilizers
but really going after the, amendment like Using medina Soil
activator and humates and molasses and things like azomide and
green sand and just all of those different minerals to

(01:20:25):
help that enrich that soil to make it chocolate cake over.

Speaker 4 (01:20:29):
Time that's a good, point and you made. It you
start off with a statement That i'd kind of like
to elaborate. ON i think it's really important to, know
and that is the effect of. Time doing the right
thing over. Time time alone doesn't fix, it but doing
the right thing over. Time in, gardening in growing, things

(01:20:49):
we have this. Spectrum and on one hand is what
nature does totally not touched by, man you. Know on that,
end it's just like. Nature, yes there's a reason why
there's giant redwoods long before people were over, there you,
know with the ability to do anything to help a tree.
Grow and there's a reason why The Great plains when

(01:21:11):
kinda stoga wagons came, across were what they, say grass
as deep as a horse's. Belly and who was earling
through that? Grass? Right nature had a way of doing.
That on the other end of the, spectrum we can
go out in space on the space ships and put
artificial light with the right wavelengths on a plant hanging

(01:21:31):
in the air with its roots being misted by the
perfect combination ratio of nutrient water and grow a tomato in. Space.
Okay so there's everything from completely artificial to completely, natural
and we find ourselves somewhere in between those extremes in our.
Gardening but as you, move as you look at beautiful,

(01:21:52):
soil like you go to The amazon rainforest and this
rich soil that you, know the unfortunate story is rip
away the rainforest and they farm the land and after
a few years of no, additions it gets depleted and
they have to take out more for. Us and so
nature's building soil really slowly over. Time we can destroy

(01:22:15):
soil in a much shorter time by not taking care of.
It AND i think what you're talking, about and WHAT
i like talking aout on, guardline is so how do
we contribute to? This SO i don't want to move
into a house and wait eighty years for a tropical
rainforest to build the. SOIL i want a garden now this.
Year and so that's where we run in and we,

(01:22:35):
Cheat we put the compost, in we do what nature's been,
doing and we just speed it up a. Lot AND
i think that's kind of some of what you're talking.
About BUT i think that's an important point for people
to be conscious of and remember.

Speaker 15 (01:22:49):
Well AND i think that too like being in you,
know we're kind of because we work in this industry
and because we are surrounded by our peers that work
in this industry that make good. Products it's easy for
us that work in the industry to look at that
and understand that it all starts at the base and

(01:23:10):
that you do have to start with a good quality.
Soil and, yes it is going to cost you some
money to do, that but if you will start, out you,
know with the very, best you will get ahead, sooner
do you know WHAT i mean than going the cheap
route that out there on the.

Speaker 4 (01:23:26):
Market that is. True that is, True, Andy And I'm
i'm coming up on a Heart, Yeah i'm coming up
on a heart break. HERE i want to pick that
thought up right there in just a, Moment and UNFORTUNATELY
i got to go to break a lot and so
we're going to do one right now And i'll be
right back with.

Speaker 7 (01:23:42):
You thanks so, much no, Problem thank, you welcome back To.

Speaker 4 (01:23:46):
Guardline good to have you with. Us we Got Andy
chidester with us From Medina Egg products. Today we're kind
of picking our, brain talking general natural gardening types of,
approaches how nature, works how we can cooperate with, nature and.
Whatnot you hear me talk About southwest fertilizer all the,
time And, southwest if you are an organic, gardener you
are not going to find a bigger selection of organic

(01:24:09):
supplies in the region Than bob's got A southwest. Fertilizer
he's down on the corner Of businet And. RENWICK i
like to say About southwest that if he doesn't have,
it you don't need, it and it's really, true because
he has. Everything but for those of you who are
interested in gardening with, nature interested in organic types of
products that we talk about, here he's got him there
and that includes fertilizers and pest disease and weed control all.

(01:24:33):
There Southwest, fertilizer corner Of bisonette And. Renwick, ANDY i
appreciate having you, Back thanks for hanging around with. Us
so we were just talking about kind of the way
nature goes and we want a sort of shortcut time
to get out there and get it, going and so
much of what we, DO i think is an ongoing,

(01:24:55):
process and thinking in terms of an ongoing, process creating
a soil that's, microbily very, active that has everything to
keep the microbes, happy and the microbes keep our plants.
Happy AND i think we talked about this a while,
back you AND. I but the interaction between microbes and

(01:25:15):
plant roots and everything we're learning right now is mind.
Bodling it is absolutely mind.

Speaker 15 (01:25:22):
Boggling so, skip don't you think that if somebody were
to write a script and send it To pixar and
Have pixar make a, movie people would? Understand, YEAH i,
mean you have good guys and you have bad guys
in the, well and you could have drama and you

(01:25:43):
know WHAT i, mean Like save The. Princess but yet
it's a. MICROBE i, mean come, on it is be,
wonderful just like THE b, movie you, know or a bug.

Speaker 4 (01:25:52):
FLY i, KNOW i, KNOW i. Know i've read several
books that have opened my eyes unbelievably. About in, fact
have you ever heard Of the Light? Eaters the Book
the Light? Eaters, no tell me it's? Recent well it
it is a very good. Writer she writes in a

(01:26:13):
way that just is so. Readable BUT i can't without
taking over the whole show tell you fully about the.
Book but it is fascinating the world of.

Speaker 8 (01:26:24):
She.

Speaker 4 (01:26:24):
Gets she gets she gets out there through the edges
where they start talking about plant consciousness and other things like,
that but the way that plants, communicate the way that
plants within the plant and between, plants and just the.
Science she pretty much pulls the science together for all
kinds of. Things and it is a you can't put it.
Down it is a very Good it's one of the

(01:26:45):
top five books i'd recommend to gardeners who really want
to just understand in a deeper. Way BUT i didn't
bring you on to talk about the light. Readers, yeah
the conversation just with that. Way so let's talk about
things getting. Ready as we're talking about how we build
our soil and do, things what are things that you
think are important right now getting ready not just for

(01:27:08):
the season, room but for the upcoming fall.

Speaker 15 (01:27:10):
Season, so for, instance YESTERDAY i began pulling my determinate
tomatoes out of my beds BECAUSE i feel like we're
kind of done with. Those and What i'll probably end
up doing today is going to my local garden center
and picking up some good composts and THEN i will,

(01:27:33):
water you, know kind of mix that in a little
bit and then come back and water it in with
a mixture of some adinasol, activator a little bit of,
humate a little bit of liquid molasses and kind of
just water that in and let it sit for a
little bit until it's time to start, planting, which as you,
know tomatoes will be for fall in our local garden

(01:27:53):
centers in a matter of. Weeks some already have some
in stock at this point in time, Too but just
really trying to get out there and soil. Build and
as we're on the phone right now this, Morning i'm
actually weeding my butterfly. CARDENS i to multicask as much as,
possible but we're going to try to get out here

(01:28:16):
and do some seaweed later on today just to help
these plants with some stress that they're going through to
to oh we've gotten three inches of rain and then
no rain and it heat.

Speaker 7 (01:28:26):
It up really bad type.

Speaker 4 (01:28:28):
Thing, yeah, YEAH i talk about the has to go
six to twelve six a lot for watering and, transplants
and my, REGIMENT i don't know if you would agree with,
us BUT i like to water it in with that
when a plant and then do it about a week
later and about a week after that and there's no magic. Number,
yes for sure, days but just two or three times
getting it because it's got a, highosphorus got a lot

(01:28:50):
of good things going on in. It and we want
our plants to hit the ground. Running you, know they're
living in this little, container whether it's a little six
pack tomato or it's a gallon or two gallon. Pot
and so you want those roots to thrive and to
take off because the faster they get, out the faster
that plant can take, off.

Speaker 8 (01:29:09):
For.

Speaker 15 (01:29:09):
Sure and it works in conjunction. TOO i, mean like
when we have those heavy. RAINS i, mean some of,
people like my favorite extension, agents have taught me that
nitrogen is the first thing to get.

Speaker 7 (01:29:22):
Depleted out of the.

Speaker 15 (01:29:23):
Soil so we've got to get back in there and
feed some and not just as if you want fries
with Your hamburger.

Speaker 8 (01:29:30):
Guys.

Speaker 7 (01:29:30):
Things why we're telling you, That.

Speaker 4 (01:29:34):
I'm still back on the fact that you put an
ass at the end of agents agent you. Have it
wasn't just. ME i THOUGHT i was your only favorite
extension agent WHEN i was back in. Extension so now
what Is David rodriguez And San antonio moving in on me?

Speaker 15 (01:29:50):
HERE i mean come, on, man say you And, david.

Speaker 2 (01:29:54):
There you.

Speaker 4 (01:29:55):
GO i hope none others are, listening because we got
a lot of good ones here in The Greater houston.
AREA i, COULDN'T i, couldn't BUT i don't know.

Speaker 15 (01:30:03):
Them you, Know, well those of you, LISTENING i need
to walk down to The extension, OFFICE i guess and, say, hey.

Speaker 4 (01:30:13):
Yeah you, do you do you? Do i'll write a
letter of. Recommendation well seriously, though, uh getting getting the,
soil getting the sail, right getting it. Ready, now you
mentioned a couple of, things, humate, humus humate is the
name you call The medina product is humates Is and

(01:30:35):
then you mentioned. Molasses so why would putting sugar on
the salt? Molasses why would that putting molasses on the
soil help help? Plant and why would humate?

Speaker 15 (01:30:45):
Plants, well what we're doing with our humates is it's
our oldest form of. Compost so instead of doing it
in a dry, Form medina takes it from a dry
form and we extract out the goodness and make it
into a liquid and, liquids as most gardeners, know are

(01:31:06):
taking that much faster than dry, are so we're actually
getting that to the plant quicker and into the stool
microbes much. Faster and the sugars are there because they
feed those beautiful beneficial microbes because they like sugar just
like we like, Sugar so it's kind of an energy
source for. Them if you look at some molasses, labels

(01:31:29):
there is a slight amount of potassium, listed not a,
lot not something that's going to jump off the charts to,
you but you will see that listed on some. Label
so that's a benefit nutrient too to the plant as.

Speaker 4 (01:31:42):
Well, okay people don't think about the, fact, Right and
people don't think about the fact that microbes carbon is
their fuel and they need. That and and basically sugar
is a chain of. Carbon molasses is a long carbon
chain along with other. Things and that really feels. It

(01:32:03):
i'll tell you. What we've got a caller here THAT
i want to bring on the, Line cheryl From. Chema
so Hello, cheryl and welcome To. Gardener you're here with? Me,
yeah go, Ahead.

Speaker 17 (01:32:14):
OKAY i am a believer In medina has to. Grow
i'll say THAT i use it on, everything But i've
never used it on the. GRASS i know there's something
else to, that but my question IS i Wasted probably
five or six years WHEN i first moved to this
area of, time money and, disappointment AND i started hearing
about building the. Soil here's the, question how much of

(01:32:39):
Original houston soil do you? Keep twenty, percent thirty? PERCENT i,
MEAN i really just. Wonder i've heard that most people
just dig the whole thing out and bring in soil
from someplace.

Speaker 4 (01:32:52):
Else, right, well let me let me comment on. That
and THEN i Want andy. Too and we're probably about
two minutes away from our very hard break, here so
we may have to carry. OVER i would not dig
out the soil because when you in a clay dig a,
hole now you have an underground, bathtub and then to
fill that bathtub full of hotting soil or something, nice

(01:33:14):
it's going to go anaerobic during heavy rains and not be.
GOOD i would build. Up so when you say what
percent do you, keep you keep one hundred. Percent you
just add to. It quality composts or in some cases
expanded shale can be very helpful and for a longer term,
benefit not instead of, compost but in addition to the.
Compost But, Andy i'm gonna give you the last minute

(01:33:36):
here before we have to go to a.

Speaker 15 (01:33:37):
Break, WELL i agree with you one hundred. Percent and
SURE i live and look for So i'm not just
right up the road from. Yet but even in my
front far, bed WHICH i am out waiting right, now
it is the Pure this house was built in nineteen sixty,
seven so it's the soil that has been. Here and

(01:33:58):
in moving, here All i've done is just at compost
on a regular basis and then multi constantly and then
doing a lot of liquid amendments here and there as.
Well but again in going back to just making that
taking the time to make that foundation look like chocolate.
Cake is this going to take a long?

Speaker 4 (01:34:17):
Time excuse, me, okay answer your.

Speaker 17 (01:34:23):
Question, yes there are a million Of but that has
helped me a lot Because i've always wondered about that for.

Speaker 4 (01:34:30):
Years, yeah, yeah no you. Didn't you just move in
and you make.

Speaker 17 (01:34:36):
It better and putting more things in.

Speaker 4 (01:34:38):
It, OKAY i got.

Speaker 17 (01:34:40):
That i've gotten that that expansion shale From. SOUTHWEST i
did drive you to get.

Speaker 8 (01:34:48):
Some of that one.

Speaker 17 (01:34:48):
Time, Yeah i'm a.

Speaker 4 (01:34:49):
Believer all, right thank, you, well thank you very, Much
And i'm going to have to go now where at
a very hard break And, andy if you can hang
AROUND i would love to continue this. Conversation and when
we come.

Speaker 15 (01:35:00):
Back of, course thank, you oh.

Speaker 4 (01:35:03):
Man the queen of the vegetable, garden the. Tomato what
would we do without a year without all these new
varieties that we can't live? Without, yeah little Guy clark, There,
uh tomatoes are the. Thing what do we? Say three
things make the phone ring at the extension office and
on garden, line and that is three t's, trees, turf.

(01:35:25):
Tomatoes those are the topics that people are most interested.
In andy And i've Been i'm visiting for those of
you just tuned in With Andy chidester With medina, products
and we're talking about all kinds of things related to
gardening with nature and. Whatnot and one example of that
kind of thing is utilizing native. Plants and when it

(01:35:45):
comes to native, PLANTS i mean they've lived here for
a long, time dealing with the pests and diseases that we,
have but also contributing to the. Wildlife you, know a
lot of our, plants like oak, trees many types of
oaks are bringing in little caterpillars and you, think, OH
i gotta kill, Them no you. Don't that is song bird.
Fuel that's what they feed their babies with that very

(01:36:06):
important AND i don't know of any place anywhere in
this region that has the selection and the knowledge about
native plants that they do At buchanans at on Eleventh
street in The. Heights go to their Website buchanansplants dot.
Com you'll find lots of good information that's just posted
there for you to check out and read lots of

(01:36:27):
updates on. There it's a wonderful. Website and then stop By.
Buchanans in, fact that'd be a good thing to do this.
Afternoon swing over to Eleven street in The, heights walk
Through buchanans and just enjoy being connected with nature because
they do such a good job. There i'm going to
head back now and Get andy here on the. Line, Hey,
andy so we kind of cut off there for that

(01:36:49):
last little, break BUT i would like to talk a
little bit about the idea of as we're growing plants
and fertilized and building the soil and, things the relationship Between,
OKAY i got to put nutrients down because the plant
needs this nutrient versus OR i would, say alongside building the.

(01:37:14):
Soil so somehow the soil is fertilizing for. You do
you know What i'm trying to say When i'm saying
it that? Way, OKAY i don't Have andy. HERE i
think we got. It let's try that, Again. Andy, okay
did you hear WHAT i just?

Speaker 15 (01:37:31):
Said on WHAT i didn't? Hear?

Speaker 4 (01:37:39):
Oh i'm, Sorry. OKAY i was just saying that the
idea of fertilizing where we add nutrients, sing, oh this
plant needs some of, this that or the, other and
so we fertilize the plant versus and not just, versus
but in coordination with the fact that the soil is
fertilizing for. Us and that do you know WHAT i
mean WHEN i say the soil is fertile? Us and

(01:38:01):
if you.

Speaker 15 (01:38:01):
Want to come on, that, WELL i think that the
soil is what brings. That it's actually the, microbes correct
that bring in all those good nutrients and make them
readily available for the plant to uptake and look beautiful
in and thrive and start to flower and fruit for

(01:38:23):
us or maybe grow lush lawns that type of, name,
RIGHT i, Think AND i am a big believer because
of being a master gardener as, well and soil testing
maybe not on as often as you would in a
brand new foundation like a brand new. Home but definitely
looking at soil tests to see what you need to

(01:38:45):
add to the soil to rejuvenate it is a great,
thing especially if you've got a problem area either in
your lawn or in a you, know front flower, bed
or maybe in your vegetable, garden looking to see what
aren't you, adding what is that it really?

Speaker 4 (01:39:00):
Needs that's that is a very good. Point so testing
cell testing gives you a snapshot in time to tell
you where you are so you know where to. Go.
Uh and WHEN i was over In, austin as we
were talking about, earlier we did a study up in
Northwest austin in The stillhouse, neighborhood which was a black
clay soil much like in many ways like The houston black.

(01:39:21):
Clay and we did two hundred homes and we so
tested every home and there was not one home that
had a level of phosphorus so low that it would
have been beneficial to add. Phosphorus in other, words like
the lawn was starving for. Phosphorus that surprised. ME i
knew it would be a low, number BUT i didn't
know it would be a no. Number and that's not

(01:39:43):
to say just to be clear here that no one
In houston needs phosphorus on their. Lawn it we, do
But i'm just saying that it's surprising sometimes what when
you do a soil test you. Find, oh And i've
told listeners to guardline before this that you hear me
say a three one two or a four one two ratio,
fertilizer which is. Good that that's a good way to,

(01:40:05):
guess but it's a it's a generally correct. Suggestion but
in your yard versus your neighbor's, yard depending on how
they were cared, for the results may be very different
and you may need a little bit of a DIFFERENT
i guess WHAT i was thinking WHEN i said the
fertilizing the soil fertilizing for. YOU i think it helps
people to stop and think about that When i'm not,

(01:40:26):
fertilizing there is a nutrient cycling and a nutrient, release
and that's going on without. Me AND i don't have
to be real clear because people sometimes mishear What i'm.
Saying But i'm not saying don't. Fertilize we do need to.
Fertilize i'm just saying that nature is doing so much
of that. Already you, know you may have a, rock

(01:40:47):
a piece of rock in the soil a, mineral and
the plant can't get, it can't get those. Nutrients but
some fungal strand releases a organic acid that dissolves a
little mineral away and it's in the soil soup and
the plants can get. It you didn't add that nature
found it and turned it loose for the plants to,
have and that that whole CONCEPT i think is good

(01:41:10):
to keep in. Mind it makes makes us want to
take better care of our.

Speaker 15 (01:41:12):
Soil if we could just see the Movie.

Speaker 7 (01:41:19):
There You, Go There You, go we would.

Speaker 8 (01:41:23):
For.

Speaker 7 (01:41:24):
Sure oh, yeah, yeah it is a hard.

Speaker 4 (01:41:26):
And in the in the in the, movie it'd be like,
this there's this plan over, here and a caterpillar starts
chomping on, it and the plant makes a phone call
to the plants that are fifty feet away through roots
and fungal strand connections and says there's a plant, coming
and those plants start getting ready for the caterpillar invasion
before the caterpillars get. There and then the plant releases

(01:41:48):
a can you TELL i get excited about? This and
then the plant releases it's chemical in the air and
over like an air force overhead or beneficial, wasps and
they quote smell it and they, go, well that plan's
telling us there's caterpillars and they swoop down to get
dinner to take home for the, night just like a.
Pizza so, yeah, YEAH i could do. THAT i can

(01:42:10):
do the animated. Movie.

Speaker 15 (01:42:13):
Yeah and then just being recently at The Natural History
museum in Downtown, HOUSTON i mean thinking about you, know
when you go in the dinosaur exhibit and the cave
man exhibit and you start thinking about how this earth
has taken care of itself for look how many years without? Man,
interesting you, know and how the climate has changed and

(01:42:36):
souls have, changed and it's quite, fascinating. Honestly of, COURSE
i did quite enjoy the INSECT i really enjoyed the
insect area. Too and the butterfly, how oh my, goodness if,
listeners if y'all have not treated yourself to going to
The Natural History, museum it's something you should. Do it

(01:42:58):
is a jewel that we have here In houston to
see for.

Speaker 4 (01:43:03):
Sure, yeah, definitely. Definitely and The cockrell butterfly walking through
there is just, wow that's cool. Stuff kids need to
be part of that because it helps connect instead of
above being, icky suddenly a bug is. Fascinating.

Speaker 15 (01:43:19):
Yeah, wow it's just a beautiful thing for. Sure so
one thing you get we're talking About medina. Products so
one thing THAT i also wanted to touch on, too
is that a very wise woman AND i think you
Know robbie will. That oh, yeah this has been in
our industry for a long. Time robbie taught me long

(01:43:43):
many many years ago that really helping plants at the
time of transplant is so very. Important at that point in,
time she would have me Use medina seaweed along with
adding some super thrive into it at the time of.
Planting she was a good believer in. That and then

(01:44:03):
the other thing that she taught. Me and, often like
If i'm teaching a gardening class somewhere at a garden
center and somebody, says, well what fertilizer are you using?
TODAY i will sometimes shock them because they'll think automatically
That i'm always using The. Dina but in the GARDEN
i like to mix it. UP i don't always even

(01:44:24):
THOUGH i work for The dina And, stuart if you're,
listening please forgive, me BUT i do like to mix it.
Up so Sometimes i'll use some. Microlives Sometimes i'll use
me some. ASPOMA i, Mean i'm all over the place
trying different things out, there AND i think that plants
don't plants and microbes don't want the same nutrients all this,
Time so sometimes it's good to diversify and mix it

(01:44:46):
up out, there you.

Speaker 4 (01:44:47):
Know, Alrighty, well while you go and get your resume in,
Order i'm going to Take i'm going to take a
break here one more and we'll come back from the
Last Garden. Life we'll be right, back all, Right welcome
back to the Guard. Line glad to have you with
us this. Morning we're we are talking With Andy chidester
From Medina products and been talking about all kinds of

(01:45:11):
things related to, gardening building the, soil working with, nature
and just thinking a little bit differently about the, plants
how they, grow and what we can do to enhance
them to help them do. Better, andie we are coming
up on the best planning season of the year this
fall and getting the word out now like we. Are

(01:45:34):
it is so much that people can do to have.
Success one of my mantras on, HERE i don't know
if you ever listen to garden line or. Not but
one of my mantras is brown stuff before green, Stuff
and basically what that means is fix the foundation before
you put in the wonderful, plants and you then have
a recipe for. Success AND i see so many people

(01:45:55):
they bring a plant home and PLoP it down into
an unprepared plot and are sad to see. There but
brown stuff before green. STUFF i don't know if you
have any thoughts on, THAT.

Speaker 15 (01:46:05):
I would agree with you. Completely, AGAIN i, mean it
all starts with that. Foundation so one of the things,
too don't you feel like coming into like we're in
the heat or as they say ON kprc here In
Houston july FOR i, month it's, fertilizing. Right SO i
have a question that gets asked often and it's something

(01:46:28):
that we'll tell people when they come into the garden,
center is to fertilize either early in the morning or
in the evening if using a. Liquid and we tell
them that because of the. Temperatures, Correct so here in
The Southeast texas, area what would you say that would be?
Like would you say don't do it after ten? Am

(01:46:50):
or some days maybe different because we got warmer earlier
in the. Day how do you.

Speaker 4 (01:46:55):
Get that's a that's a hard. One that's a hard
one for me to be real specific with because there's
a lot of. Factors but so synthetic fertilizers are typically salt,
based and a little bit of salt dissolved in a
lot of water is not going to hurt. ANYTHING a
lot of salt dissolved in little water is going to burn. Things,
say it's the same. Thing you put a little salt
on your food and you're, fine but try to take

(01:47:17):
a teaspoon of salt into your mouth and you got.
Problems so it's the dose, there and that it's also
how long you leave it sitting. Out letting those granules
sit on a, leaf they will absorb moisture from the.
Air they literally get wet just from the humidity in,
part and that will burn holes in the. Leaves and
then with organic, products we don't have to worry so

(01:47:40):
much about. Burning and so you, KNOW i would just say,
moderation follow the instructions with a lot of. Products doing
it in the morning is better because it's cooler and
the plant stresses are, lower and then you can also
then watered in if that's. Needed following whatever you're. DOING

(01:48:00):
i don't know if that answered directly what you're, asking but, yes.

Speaker 15 (01:48:04):
Definitely and then one of the things too that we
recommend At medina is not to fertilize a dry, soil
to always make sure that the soil is a little
moist before applying a. Fertilizer, yeah in order to help
it get uptaken much better that. Way do you have

(01:48:27):
any thoughts on.

Speaker 4 (01:48:28):
That, yeah that's, true AND i generally would WHEN i,
Fertilize i'm going to follow it up with a watering too,
immediately but having moist soil is. Helpful we also have
the issue of runoff and when you get these gully washer,
rains especially some types of products tend to run off

(01:48:50):
more than others and for it to dissolve and head
across the surface of your lawn or garden bed like sheet.
Erosion you're descending new trans to The greek where they're
not doing you any, good but they are causing problems
for water quality. Downstream so, yeah we want to avoid.
That when, again going back to WHEN i was In,

(01:49:11):
austin we worked with The city Of Austin Watershed Protection
department and that message of don't fertilize rot for a.
RAIN i know everybody does, that but just be aware
that when you. Do if you get a gully washer
and it is a, fertilizer is going to dissolve, easily
then you're going to lose the effect of the benefit
and environmentally wasted.

Speaker 15 (01:49:32):
Money yeah for.

Speaker 4 (01:49:33):
Sure yeah that's. True AND i think it is.

Speaker 15 (01:49:36):
Too like you, know Our supergrow product that we came out,
with the sixteen zero, two it was out of a
request from several garden centers out of The florida market
and simply because In florida they're not allowed to apply
phosphorus at different times of the year in certain counties

(01:49:56):
in that, state and that is due to run off
and because they are protecting their streams and their lakes
and their rivers and bays and stuff like that. Too
so that was the reason to put that product. Together
but and it can BE i, mean it's not just For.
Florida it's great For texas, too you.

Speaker 8 (01:50:16):
Know.

Speaker 4 (01:50:17):
NO i love that product AND i was so excited
when you guys came out with. It now The medina
has to go. Lawn the eight excuse, me twelve four
to eight is a great product AND i still use,
that but The supergril plus is sixteen oh. TWO i
meant to get to that WHEN i was talking about
That austin. Study supergirl plus is awesome for, launs for

(01:50:40):
a nice green. Up you can do it and At
hookstolle garden, hose so you can just kind of give
it a squirt here and there through the season if you,
want and you probably wear. This but it's good for
not just. LAWNS i mean your, gardens your flower, beds
a lot of. Things anything you want to give a
boost to it. Works BUT i like that low phosphorus
number a.

Speaker 15 (01:50:58):
Lot, yeah it's it's and NOT i mean even for those,
that like if you're running late implanting your tomatoes or
something and like you, said you want to put some
growth on. It you can't go wrong there with the
sixteen zero. Two and i've you, said on even a
few houseplants just to see what it would, do and
have done quite well with. It it won't burn anything

(01:51:22):
that's out there for you our twelve four. EIGHT i
do love me some twelve four eight out on the
lawn for. SURE i think it's very beneficial and you've
got some great additives in there besides just your basic
nitrogen and phosphorus that's in. There you also have the
combination of you've got medina sool activator and then you've

(01:51:44):
got some humic acids in there too to kind of
help with the oil building.

Speaker 8 (01:51:48):
Piece so it.

Speaker 15 (01:51:50):
Makes so great That.

Speaker 4 (01:51:53):
OH i hate that. Music it means the hours. Over
it always makes me. Sad well, THERE i could talk
to you for another three, hours BUT i thank you
so much for being on, Today, andy right right, well
after that comment about actually not me not being the
only kind of extension agent that you, TOLERATE i think

(01:52:15):
you probably owe me a beer or, something so we'll
figure that.

Speaker 15 (01:52:17):
OUT i would do that for. Sure and will you
send me the name.

Speaker 4 (01:52:21):
Of that book, Too, YES i, Will The Light, eaters
and then i'mill send you another. One and the name
is escaping me right. Now but it's all about fungi
in the. Soil Sheldon man And drake or something wrote,
it and it is the same low your, mind you'll
recognize that fungi are in charge of the world and
we're just. Visiting Thanks, andy.

Speaker 15 (01:52:42):
Well thanks for, today have a great rest of your.

Speaker 2 (01:52:45):
Day.

Speaker 15 (01:52:45):
Skip thank you.

Speaker 4 (01:52:51):
All, right, folks welcome back To Guarden. Line guess what
we got an hour, today which means we only have
an hour this weekend left wherever from six to ten

andy is just such a pleasure to work, with to visit,

(01:53:34):
with very, Knowledgeable i'm very laid back and JUST i
JUST i just find that her perspective on a lot
of things related to gardening and, whatnot products and, everything
it's just a it's just. REFRESHING i enjoy. That so,
anyway that is that was. Good glad to visit with.

(01:53:54):
Her i've talked about as hardware a, bunch and it's
because there's so much really to say ABOUT ace hardware
when you think about all of the things that are.
There it's pretty much next to the grocery store by
the only place you need to. Go SOMETIMES i feel that.
WAY i walk Into Ace hardware stores and you just

(01:54:14):
See east stores independently, owned so you see all kinds of.
THINGS i, Mean i've been seeing a fudge bar and
An Ace hardware stride. That trust, me it's like you
weigh ten pounds and you get out of. There it's so.
Good beautiful home. Furnishings you, know you love the farmhouse
look or some other type of designer, look and they've
got it. There and who Thought i'm going to go
to a hardware store to furnish my. House well you

(01:54:36):
do At Ace. HARDWARE i talk about it from a
standpoint of a. Gardener you, know every product you need,
outside the tools you need, outside all of that is.
Important and THEN i love to live. Outside my patio
is a room of my. Home thankfully they don't tax
my property based on considering the patio living. Space but
it is and. BEAUTIFUL i got a beautiful barbecue PIT

(01:54:58):
i got From ace this, Year rectic and it's just
it's just so enjoyable to be out and enjoy. That
and for, us especially late in the. Day you know
it's summertime and you've got to get past that hot.
PART ace is a great place to go to find
the things to make your indoor and outdoor living. Better

(01:55:19):
so with us coming up here on the fall, season
remember to get my schedules off gardening with skip dot.
Com the lawn care schedule is about fertilizers basically from
a product, standpoint and then other tips for lawn, care
and then the pest disease and weed management schedule is
about just what it says things that go wrong with the.
Lawn and when you go TO Ace, hardware there are

(01:55:41):
things you want to have on, hand you want to
keep around because they're, needed they're, important and you're gonna need.
Them so for, example mosquito. Dunks mosquito, dunks it is.
Summer we live In. Houston mosquitoes from all over the
world vacation here in the summer because it is ideal
for them to enjoy and the fallen spring. Too by the,

(01:56:02):
way mosquito dunks are those little, things you, know their little.
Donut you throw them out there and they cover like
a hundred square foot of surface. AREA i THINK i
said earlier today THAT i had a. Tray Sometimes i'll
get those little waiting pools cheap, cheap teep, kiddo three
foot wide waiting, pool plastic waiting, pool And i'll put
my plants in it When i'm gonna go on. Vacation

(01:56:24):
for those of you still got vacationing to, do think about.
This i'll set the plants down in. There they got
a little tray underneath. Them i'll take the tray, off
set the plants down and put about an inch or
two of, water depends on how big the plant is
and how long you're going to be. Gone and it's like.
Self waters the plants for a week or two and
then it takes a few days after that before they

(01:56:45):
get dry enough to need. Water But i'll throw a
mosquito dunk into that little waiting. Pool in, fact you
don't need to use a whole. Donut about a third
of a dog fourth of a donut is more than
enough to cover that. Area AND i did it just
recently on an extended trip out of. Town came back.
In not a mosquito larvae in, it because it kills.
Them it's a disease of. Mosquitoes that's how that. Works but,

(01:57:07):
anyway that's that's just one of the great products that
you're going to find at YOUR Ace hardware. Stores and
there are, many many. More if you want more, information
go TO Ace Hardware texas dot. Com Acehardware texas dot
com and you can FIND ace in places like The
Lake conrads on one oh Five, west The ROCKPORT ace
On State highway thirty Five, north the Jyn OURS ace

(01:57:29):
up In. PORTER i did an appearance there not too long,
ago a great Store League CITY ace out On West
League City parkway In League. City and OH i got
to throw one more In Hardware city On Memorial Drive,
west and he'said did in an appearance there, there SHARE
ubi earlier in the. Spring all good, stores all great,
places all independently, owned but all that you can depend

(01:57:51):
on to have the products you. Need let that out To,
Spring texas now and we're going to talk To. Bob, Hey,
bob welcome To. Gardline good, Morning.

Speaker 5 (01:58:01):
Skip how you doing?

Speaker 18 (01:58:01):
THAT? I, uh two quick. Questions we'll send you an
email with a basil. LEAF i don't know if you got,
it BUT i probably.

Speaker 4 (01:58:10):
Did, okay when when did you send? That just about
ten minutes? Ago? Oh, okay it hadn't come through, yet
may have gone to the wrong. Place i'll do a quick,
reload BUT i can already answer your. Question are these
brown spots kind of irregular in? Shape, yeah, okay.

Speaker 18 (01:58:33):
And aggressively SO i don't know if that had something
to do with.

Speaker 4 (01:58:38):
It it was really. Dick now what that is is that's
a bacterial. Spot it could be, fungal but AS i
look at, IT i think it's. Bacterial you also have
spider mites on the. LEAF i can tell by the
speckling and the way the leaf is. Malformed spider mites
are underneath the, leaf sucking juices out of the of the,
leaf so and insecticidal soap spray would take care of.

(01:58:59):
THEMITES i would pick off the infected leaves because every
time a rain drop, hits it's gonna splash bacteria or
fungal spores onto your other healthy, Leaves so pick all
those off since you're gonna eat the. BASIL i just
don't feel good about spraying the leaves with. Chemicals you,
know there are products that will stop back, here and

(01:59:21):
fudgie copper based products will and. Whatnot BUT i would
pick off the old leaves and just get fresh new growth.
Out try to avoid overhead. Watering you can't control the,
rain but you can't control your. Sprinklers and every time you,
water you increase foliage. Diseases so that would be something
in your control other than spraying to kill the.

Speaker 18 (01:59:42):
Furnace, okay, great and the second question real, Quick and
by the, Way i've been following your long care schedule
And i've had commercial guys doing my long SINCE i
moved down. Here and this Year i've done the, Asumite
i've done the weed and feed and two slow release
hits so far per the, schedule and my lawn has
never looked. Better, yes, Fantastic so thank you very much

(02:00:04):
for that one. QUESTION i have, THOUGH i got some
strips of. Weeds one of the previous guys had a
drop spreader and they.

Speaker 4 (02:00:12):
BURNED i don't know.

Speaker 18 (02:00:13):
What they, did but they were trying to tell me
it was. Insects they've made straight lines and ate the
grass in perfectly straight. Lines but here's are there there's
weeds in? There CAN i hit it with weed and
feed again in just the spots where those weeds still?
Are or WELL i you refertilizing SINCE i just did
the job slow release.

Speaker 4 (02:00:35):
When when was the last time you used weed control on?

Speaker 18 (02:00:37):
It the weed and feed WAS i think back In,
march per your.

Speaker 4 (02:00:41):
Schedule, OKAY i wouldn't use a weed and feed the
products in it now with our high temperatures can be
damaging to your. Lawn, okay we're going to hold off on.
That if if the weeds are broad leaf, weeds there
are products that you can use if you do them
very early in the morning when it's very cool though

(02:01:02):
cool for summer, morning before it heats, up they're less
damaging to the lawn at that. Time the, PRODUCT i
talk about it all the. Time it's, expensive but it
comes in little one gallon packets that are not that
expensive As, celsius and that one isn't as temperature as
much of a temperature. Concern you, know if it's ninety three, degrees,

(02:01:24):
well celsius isn't going to hurt your, lawn where some
of the others in the upper eighties can start to do.

Speaker 18 (02:01:29):
Damage So celsius it fell broad as the temperature.

Speaker 4 (02:01:35):
Exactly and you'll find it in little packets and a
lot of our garden, centers ace hardware stores and other
places will carry celsius and it makes one, gallon so
you're just spot, spraying and a gallon goes a long.
Way when you're just spot, spraying you're not spraying the whole.
Lawn you're just squirting the little, weeds. Okay and all

(02:01:57):
it takes is a fine, mist a fine mist on the.
Leaf don't drench. It you know that's just wasting. Product,
okay all. Right by the, WAY i love my rectech.
Too oh, Man i'm telling you it. Is, well don't
get me, started all, right, sir all, right thank, you

(02:02:19):
appreciate your. Call mm. Hmm you take care our phone
number seven one three two one two kt R h
seven one three two one two k t r h.
It see where are we? Here, yeah we gotta go
to a little break here And i'll be right back
with your. Calls all, right we're, Back welcome back to.
Guardline good heavy with. Us you know one THING i

(02:02:42):
noticed on drive around in the, summertime and you will
notice this. Too our landscape has become a sea of,
green green, grass green, trees green. Shrubs hopefully the grass is,
green green, glass green, grass green, trees green, shrubs green ground.
COVERS i mean this's. Green, now there's a little bit
of color in, there but not. Much it's a sea of.
Green having a professional come in and do some design

(02:03:07):
work can fix. That and if you sit down with
Like piercescapes for, example that's our go to landscaper here
on Garden. Line you can go to their Website piercescapes
dot com find out how to get in touch with,
them OR i can just give you the phone number
two eight one, three seven fifty. Sixty but sit down
with them and, say, look here's a picture of my
lawn and it's a sea of, green or it's you

(02:03:28):
know whatever it is that you don't care for about
it my landscape rother and what can you? DO i
want stuff that's pretty in the. SPRING i want stuff
that's pretty in the. SUMMER i want stuff that's pretty
in the fall and even in. Winter we have some,
options not just, blooms but other things that can be very.
Attractive maybe some landscape lighting too would help with that as,

(02:03:48):
well but they can do that and there's no reason
to settle for a sea of. Green have a professional
landscaper come in and do the design work to create.
Beauty they know how to do. It And peerscapes is
if you go To pierscapes dot com and see the
work they. Do you'll be impressed. Too eight one three
seven h fifty. Sixty i've been a head out here

(02:04:13):
on the. Phones we're going to go to a task
casita and talk To. Jim, Hey, jim welcome to regard.

Speaker 7 (02:04:18):
Line thank you so.

Speaker 2 (02:04:20):
Much. Skip here's he's a. Situation i've talked to my
friends In florida at The Landscape, erson people who work
on a lot of, yards and they say that people
down there are cutting the lawns and they want them
five inches. High my question is, Here i'm having a
little bit of problems because it's been raining so much
in the ground is so damp, underneath SO i would

(02:04:42):
let to keep it at three and a half inches
and also two true of falls Because i've been Using
bruce's brew and my graft has been going so, great
But i'm cutting it three times a.

Speaker 7 (02:04:55):
Week so.

Speaker 2 (02:04:59):
Is it true that you should only cut the lawn
a half an inch at a, time or else you
put it in shock if it's like two inches too
high or.

Speaker 4 (02:05:07):
Whatever, yeah, Well i'm glad you asked that Because i'd
like to clarify that for everybody. Listening the goal on
lawns isn't how much inches you cut. Off it's to
cut off a third of the height when you. Mow
so if you had a grass that was three inches,
high you would mow it to two. Inches if you
had a, grass you, know see What i'm, saying so

(02:05:29):
it's four inches and a half inches, high you would
mow it to three inches a third of the. Top
and what happens, though is nature jumps down and you
get a weak of rain and you can't mow the,
lawn and so you cut it to what you need
to cut. It but in, general if we can take
a third off at a, time that's ideal for the. Grass,
now the bruses brew is an awesome. Product WHAT i

(02:05:50):
would do if you're getting that fast grow results you're talking,
ABOUT i would cut the bruces bruin half and split
it into two. Applications you, know slow releases are great
because they do that for, You but you could take
the same amount of nitrogen and apply it in two
or three applications over that long period of, time and

(02:06:11):
that way you get a more even feed and a
little bit less of that, fast fast growth that you're
trying to keep. Up with. It, also when you get
that fast, Growth, jim you actually have less. Roots it's.
Surprising BUT i saw a picture one time in a
turf research and it was three crocs of water and
they had a little grass growing up in the, top

(02:06:32):
and one had low, nitrogen one had just, right and
one had too. Much and the low nitrogen the grass
wasn't looking good at. All it was kind of shartruice
yellow instead of. Green the one that was in the
middle looked, great good, roots, system good. Top and the
one on the right with all the, nitrogen it was emerald,
green real, tall flopping. Over and when they picked up the,
crocold it had less roots than any of the other.

(02:06:55):
Two and so that's just a you, know we don't
with less. Roots we got summer drought and, heat we
got chinch, bugs we got grubs chomping on. Roots we
don't need less, Roots so don't overdo the. NITROGEN i
know that's a little bit of a. Soapbox but thanks for.

Speaker 1 (02:07:11):
A great, poise no great.

Speaker 4 (02:07:13):
Poise thank you so much for.

Speaker 7 (02:07:14):
This thank You, skip thank you coubble.

Speaker 4 (02:07:16):
Us all, right take, care appreciate the. Call thanks a. Lot,
hey if you'd like to give me a call seven
one three two one TWO ktrh seven one three two
one two. Ktrh we were visiting With andy a minute.
Ago andy tedester and she Mentioned microlife fertilizers is a
great organic, product and it absolutely. Is you, know it's
been love for, gardeners love by gardeners and landscape professionals for,

(02:07:38):
gosh thirty five over thirty five now. Years, uh Micro
life products aren't going to burn your, lawn are your other.
Plants they're safety used on whatever plants you. Have, uh
they have more than just the minerals in the label
on the. Back in other, words if you look at
Micro life six two, four the green, bag the lawn,
fertilizer they're really the whatever you want to use it on.

(02:08:00):
Fertilizer you see six two four six percent, nitrogen two percent,
phosphorus four percent. Potassium but there's over one hundred minerals
in that. Product they're all kinds of things because when
you take organic materials natural once was a live. Stuff
it's got zinc in, it and it's got manganese in

(02:08:21):
it's got boron in, it it's got moleved in a,
minute it's got, sulfur and you see What i'm. Saying
that's that's what's in life, forms, plants, animals, humans and
so these products aren't just the three numbers on the.
Bag microlife products are. Loaded, plus they're loaded with billions
and billions of beneficial microbes that helps plants grow. Stronger

(02:08:41):
i'm telling, you microbes are the thing in nature that
helps plants to thrive in so many. Ways i'll go
on a tirade some other time about, that But i'm
telling you it's very. Important And microlife is designed to
work with, nature to work like. Nature and whether you
use their granulars like the six two, four or whether

(02:09:04):
you use their liquids like The biometrix for, example or
the seaweed based, products you're gonna have success as simple as.
That let's head out now To beaumine and we're going
to talk To. Ryan, Hey, ryan welcome to Garden.

Speaker 7 (02:09:19):
Line, hey good. Morning how are you doing.

Speaker 8 (02:09:23):
Doing?

Speaker 4 (02:09:24):
Well good, deal good.

Speaker 7 (02:09:27):
Deal SO i have a BlackBerry.

Speaker 19 (02:09:29):
BUSH i planted probably three or four months ago.

Speaker 4 (02:09:35):
And, okay looking.

Speaker 7 (02:09:36):
BEAUTIFUL i, mean it's growing, great beautiful, leaves it's getting.

Speaker 19 (02:09:41):
Tall but the only thing, is you, know so about
a month, ago if it was blooming nice had a
bunch of blooms growing, berries and and so all of
a sudden it Just i'm not getting no blooms at all.

Speaker 4 (02:09:56):
Anymore, Okay, Ryan, ryan do you know the name of
the BlackBerry? Variety by? Chance?

Speaker 19 (02:10:06):
Oh, MAN i know it's a thornless BlackBerry.

Speaker 7 (02:10:10):
Bush.

Speaker 4 (02:10:10):
Kay did it did it have the word did it
have did it have the word prime in the? Name
P R I M. E prime? Something If if you don't,
know that's, OKAY i just. Okay so BlackBerry blackberries they
set buds in the typically they set buds in the,

(02:10:31):
fall and they go through winter and then in the
spring those buds bloom and. Grow, now if you get
a bush that you plant and it had the we'll
say older wood on, it it could have bloomed for.
You but unless it's a prime acne producer which has
prime in the, name it's going to bloom only in the.
Spring so next spring you'll have. Blooms so what you

(02:10:54):
want to do right now is keep it growing and
keep it. Healthy those shoots that come, up once they
get about maybe chest, high tip, them cut the tips
out of, them and it'll cause them to form. Branches
and on those branches will be a lot more blooms
than that single shoot would, have and then next spring
you'll be in the very. Business all, right, Awesome.

Speaker 7 (02:11:15):
WELL i appreciate. THAT i didn't know that about the,
clipping SO i appreciate.

Speaker 8 (02:11:18):

k t R. H Nelson Water, Gardens Nelson nursery And
Water gardens out there In, Katie texas is a destination
garden center THAT i would recommend you check out if
you never. Have if you've been there, before you know
WHY i like it so. Much Nelson Water gardens in

(02:13:57):
the water garden, part they've been leaders in that industry
for a very long. Time and they can build you
a water. Garden they can create a dispring, fountain which
is a thing they. Invented now everybody's thinking that they
know all about dispring, fountains But nelson's created. It they
or if you won't do it, yourself they can advise
and help you so you can create water gardens and

(02:14:19):
disipring fountains and things like. That they got the parts
and pieces necessary to do. It when you're, there you're
going to find plants that are. Unbelievable their interior plant
section in the store is. Gorgeous and one thing that
alwayly strikes me AND i walk in there IS i
look at these. Plants i'm, LIKE i got pick that
up right now and take it as a. Gift it's that.
Pretty the, container the, plant the condition that's in the

(02:14:41):
fullness of the plant for the, container and everything like.
That it's. Awesome Nelson Water gardens And. Nursery they also
carry products that you need to make sure your lawn looks,
good to make sure your plants are, succeeding whatever you're looking.
FOR i think the best part is the water and
hearing the. Water it's. Therapy if you got little, kiddos
take them with. You this afternoon be a good. Time

(02:15:03):
go To Nelson grocery And Water gardens Adding. Katie it's
On Katie Fort, benroad just north Of iten on the
right hand side and go up and tell, them, hey
do you got some. FOOD i want my little kiddo
to feed the food. HERE i feed the fish here
and they'll give you a little handful of. Food and
your child can go out there and feed these jack
koy in the back pond and they will think it's

(02:15:24):
the best thing in the world for. Them let them
try that out while you enjoy the calming sound of
water as you. Shop we're going to go now To.
Houston talk To. Dell, Hey, dell welcome to Garden.

Speaker 8 (02:15:37):
Line thank, You. SKIP i have bush roses and the
leaves are starting to turn. YELLOW i know they've just
been inundated with, water but what CAN i do to
reverse the?

Speaker 4 (02:15:52):
Yellowing uh in the yellow? Leaf for you seeing black
dead spots or or is it just?

Speaker 8 (02:16:01):
Yellow but they just seem to be.

Speaker 4 (02:16:04):
Yellowing, Okay, well sometimes when plants go without water and
then they get, water they'll turn the old leaves yellow
and drop them off and get fresh new. Growth it's
something you if you've had apotheos ivy, inside you probably notice.
That and it gets a little dry and it's. Tough
it'll bounce, back but when you water it then it perks,

(02:16:24):
out but then the oleaves start turning. Yellow that's just
a natural thing in some. Plants the lack of water
could also be due to. Overwatering if you keep them
too soggy, wet the roots can't get oxygen and that's a.
Problem but assuming they're on a decent amount of drainage
and you know that they're not oversaturated growing in a,

(02:16:45):
swamp then we can eliminate. That and the only other
thing would be diseases and typically black Spot but there
you should see more than just. Yellowing you should actually
see some black spots on or black areas on top
of the leaf.

Speaker 8 (02:16:59):
There but it's the ones that are on the incline
of the bed where the water gathers in the heavy,
rains And i'm thinking that they to, it, yeah because
the ones that are higher.

Speaker 4 (02:17:15):
That's Pal, Yeah so a couple of. Things if it's
not too severe and the plants are still, okay you
could leave them and then when we get into, fall
let's say Late october Early, november go in and just
literally dig those plants, up try to get as much
of the roots as you. Can AND i would wait
Until november for this one and then build that bed

(02:17:37):
up better and then set them immediately right back down.
In it falls a great time for, planting and you
would just be fixing the problem at that time and
resetting your. Plants so that would be an, option and
the only other option would be figuring out a way
to drain excess water, away like A french, strain subsurface
drain or something in that. Area that's a lot more.

Speaker 8 (02:17:56):
Work, yeah, no AND i have a drain in there,
too BUT i guess, okay just getting the f to. It, Okay,
well thanks very.

Speaker 4 (02:18:06):
Much, yeah that's the best accurate SHOUT i can give, you,
know not seeing the plants and, everything BUT i THINK
i think they'll be. Fine thanks for being a listener
to Garden line. Though appreciate. That, okay, alrighty if you'd
like to give me a call seven one three two
one two k t R h seven one three two

(02:18:26):
one two k t R. H So i've gotten some.
Questions just got a question about slugs here if. Fdera
if you want to give us a, call we can
address that. One it's best for me to address. Online
people don't have that same. Question in my traveling and
stuff and coming, BACK i was looking at the way

(02:18:51):
plants were pruned in some other areas and it it
just kind of struck me in plant pruning is something
that different kinds of plants are pruned in different. Ways
there's more than one way to prune a particular plant
in some. Cases but understanding pruning before you go out

(02:19:11):
to prune is. Important AND i know it's not, wintertime
but pruning has done all times of the. Year just
keep in mind that right now are plants that set
flowers and fruit for. Spring so that would be let's
talk about fruit trees like. That that would be plums
and peaches and apples and pears for. Example those are
setting the air fruit buds in that now and in

(02:19:34):
the coming month or two or so on where you
live in for next. Year so if you, prune you're
cutting away some of the branches that would have been
flowering or fruitful for you next. Year so we don't
want to prune late summer and early fall on those
kind of. Plants, Okay plants that bloom in the, summertime

(02:19:57):
they bloom on new, growth and you can prune them
in the. Winter you can cut the thing off at the.
Ground it's going to come up on the ground and
bloom for. You That things like vitex would be an
example of. That oleander would be an example of that
kind of, plant so we don't worry about pruning them
at this. Time it's okay to do some pruning on
them if you need, to but just keep in mind

(02:20:19):
also the proper way to prune, plants and each one
has its, system and there's some good information. Online The
horticulture website has great information on every kind of fruit
tree you would grow, here and not just trees but
vines and bushes as, well and tells you how to prune.
Them SO i would follow, that and other than, THAT

(02:20:40):
i need to put something on like that on pruning
on the. WEB i need to make a note of.
That but other than, that ask yourself the question when
does it, bloom and if it blooms in the, spring
prune it after it. Blooms with the exception of fruit,
trees which we do some pruning because with fruit, trees
we're not growing them for the blooms or growing them
for the free so we prune to create a better

(02:21:03):
tree for growing fruit and there'll still be plenty of
blooms on. It but things like let's see, dogwood what
would be another good, example red. Bud my mind's going
a little blank on these now spring bloomers like that
for inch. Tree those we don't want to prune at
this point in. Time make sure they have time to

(02:21:23):
set those buds and grow more. Fruit all, right if
you have a, question we're going to take a little break.
Here i've got one more segment, left and WHEN i
come back for, That i've got room for a couple of.
Calls seven one three two one two kat r h
here's your. Shot, otherwise we'll talk to you next. Weekend
we'll be right. Back all, right we're. Back welcome back

(02:21:48):
to guarden. Line we got a very quick segment to
do here year. Round houston is a company that you
need to know. About they do, compost top dressing and.
Corporation and as this there is heating, up as water
bills are going up BECAUSE i under water more never done,
rain which we go through those droughts. Here corrooration and
compless top dressing helps your lawn get a, deeper more

(02:22:11):
extensive root, system which in turn helps reduce. Watering so
that's how this. Works you, know, clay soil and compaction and,
stuff you just don't get good oxygen and roots done in.
There you do a corrooration and pop those plugs ont
of the ground and roots can get more oxygen and
they get more, extensive and more extensive roots mean more
ability to take up water and, nutrients so the lawn

(02:22:33):
is healthier with less frequent little squirting of. WATER i,
mean it saves your money in your water bills to do.
It and these guys are specialists when it comes to
corrooration and composs top dressing a. Year Round houston dot
com is a website and you need to check that
out and give them a. Call eight three two eight
eight four fifty three thirty. Five they cover the area

(02:22:55):
inside The beltway inside The beltway In. Houston if you
live in that, region give Your Round houston a. Call
you're Round houston dot com eight three to two eight
eight four fifty three thirty. Five it is one of
the single probably the single most impactful thing you can
do to take a struggling line and bring it. Back
is a corporation and accomplished up dressing following, it and

(02:23:17):
they know how to do it at Your Round houston dot.
Com i'm going to head now To sugarland to talk To. June, Hey,
june welcome to Guarden. Line.

Speaker 20 (02:23:26):
HI i was listening to you with The medina product
AND i never knew how exactly to use it in
what's FOR i have a rose of sharon THAT i
transplanted and it's doing, okay it's taking its roots, Fine
but SHOULD i Put madina on it to kind of

(02:23:48):
get it at an extra boost.

Speaker 8 (02:23:50):
Or what you?

Speaker 4 (02:23:51):
Can, yeah you can do. That you can use it
as a. Transplant first of, all there's a lot Of
medina products out, there not just. One, fine but you
can drench them on the. Soil they all help build the.
Soil they all help roots and help plants. THRIVE i
use them in. Transplanting you can do it afterwards just
as a drench. Fertilization you can also spray foliage with.
It depending on the, product it will fully absorb pretty

(02:24:16):
well on the, plant especially those with seaweed and them
and fish and molson in them and things like. That but,
yeah just however you go about using, it just always
follow the Label june and you'll Be you'll be safe
and good to.

Speaker 20 (02:24:28):
Go, okay just get The medina has to grow.

Speaker 4 (02:24:34):
Products you could do. Hash, yeah you could do has To,
grow or you could Do medina plus that's another good.
One both of those are good if you're wanting to
benefit the soil a. Lot The Medina plus has a
few extra, things but it also is a little better
for foldier feeding as.

Speaker 20 (02:24:48):
Well oh, well that's great to. Know Then i'll get a.

Speaker 7 (02:24:51):
Plus thank you so. MUCH i appreciate.

Speaker 4 (02:24:53):
You bet bye, Bye thanks for the. CALL i appreciate
that very. Much you know where do you get products? This,
well you can go TO Ace hardware and get. Them
Ace Hardware texas dot. Com that's the website for all
MY Ace hardware stores here in the Garden line listening.

hardware On Seventh street way down southwest In Bay. City
just examples of places that ARE Aace hardware stores where

(02:25:37):
you can find these kinds of. Products, Again Ace Hardware
texas dot. Com let's set out now to Sugar land
and we're going to visit With james this. Morning Hello, James.

Speaker 21 (02:25:46):
Hey good, Morning. Skip i've been fighting take all patch
for several. Years, now about four weeks AGO i put
out the eagle, turf wasn't seeing a whole lot of,
change SO i DECIDED i saw your video online about
put Now pete. Mass so about eight days AGO i
put Out Pete moss And i'm starting to see some
improvement in the grass color and it doesn't seem to.

(02:26:10):
Spreading but there's nothing out there that tells me is
there next? Step DO i keep putting out eagle? Turf
DO i keep putting out Break pete? Moss what what's?

Speaker 4 (02:26:20):
NEXT i would you can do the eagle turf on
that this time of, year it's difficult to do with
take all root rock because most of the damage has
already been. Done uh market was somebody that has a
yard down southwest and oh my, gosh it's it was
so far gone when we started that it's not going

(02:26:40):
to make dead come back. Alive and so if you
look at my gardening, schedule it has to take all
times when it's best to, apply and that's going to
Be october And, november and then in the spring there's
a month where we can do some. APPLICATION i would
switch and go to a product that contains a zoxy
strobin asyx y a zoxy. Strobin when you do those,

(02:27:05):
treatments the peat moss is good if you put it
out at a bail per thousand square feet and then
you water it. In it's not something that kills all the.
Takeoff it's not a systemic like a zoxystrobin. Is but
it does help green up the. Plant and then, finally
And i'm having to do this in a real fast
because we're run out of time. Here but the last

(02:27:27):
thing would be the product from fertilome that is iron
and other micronutrients that you can mix in water and
spray on the grass. Foliage think of that like AN.
Iv you're in the. Hospital you can't, eat so they
give you AN iv to keep you. Going your grass
plant has lost its, roots it can't, eat and so
you spray the fertilome micros on, it iron and other

(02:27:49):
micronutrients on it, periodically and that will help get it
going and at least get it through this. Season and
if it's not too far, gone you can turn it.
Around i've turned mine around When i've had take all
come in like.

Speaker 1 (02:28:01):
That, okay where do you where do you find oxy?

Speaker 4 (02:28:04):
Strobin Ace hardware. Stores you're In, Sugarland you're real close
to A Southwest fertilizer On bissinet And. Renwick, uh you
could do. That there's An Ace hardware, store you, know
kind Of Richmond rosenberg area out.

Speaker 7 (02:28:17):
There oh, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:28:22):
Yeah we'll just stop in. There, yeah well Plant Plantation Ace.
Hardware well we'll have something like that too for. You but,
Anyway i'm gonna you're talking with. You and then a
couple of Calls i've had this. Week, uh our Emails
i've had this, week if reminded, ME i just need
to create a take all publication And i'll try to
get that done and get it online here for too.

Speaker 21 (02:28:43):

(02:29:27):
pencil and hand or pen so you can write What
