Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, we need a do over on a judge's election
from twenty twenty two. It was supposed to be happening soon,
but evidently that's on delay again because not only it's
been and this is in the first delay, it's been
delayed repeatedly. We're talking about election. This is a better
part of three years old at this point. Lots of
issues with this and controversy here in Harris County, so
(00:22):
much so that Judge Peoples, a visiting judge, had to
step in and order a doover for the Republican and
Democrat candidates there, Tammy Pierce and DeShawn Jones. But evidently
DeShawn Jones doesn't want a do over because evidently he
won the election. It's complicated. Alexandra Mieler joins US Metro
board member former candidate herself to talk a little bit
(00:44):
about this. Give us a little background on this. What
is the what caused the need for the doover to
begin with?
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Sure, thanks for having me, Jimmy. So, yeah, we go
back in time those few years ago. Just about every
issue that could happen occurred, So multiple polling locations that
actually opened lank, quite a few that closed early equipment
malfunctioning in what was decided in the court was that
(01:14):
the county clearly didn't follow our state election laws. And
unfortunately what's been happening is this legal process is drug
on so long that there's really no remedy. Because we're
staring at the twenty twenty sixth election. So this is
when we had Rodney Ellis bring in. Clifford Tatum came
(01:35):
in right before the elections, supposed to you know, be
an expert. Thankfully we returned elections to the county official.
But outside of even those headlines, you know, they changed
pulling locations. Commissioner Ramsey are Loan Republican had about twenty
percent less polling locations in the Democrat area. So whatever
(01:55):
you could put your sum on the scale they did.
And Sammy Peerce is very crucial to race by. Their
vote count came up four hundred short and so through
the legal process you're able to show that actually, you know,
there was over one thousand votes counted that were invalid.
In addition to the impact of those long lines in
close bowing locations, paper shortages. Yeah, it's the habits that
(02:18):
most of us can look back to.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
You know, if you asked me, the whole election should
be a doover, should have been a dueover, even if
it didn't seem to be particularly close. Because of all
the things that you mentioned, this one, I guess, was
what the only one that was really so close that
they thought that the dueover was necessary to make sure
that we had a fair election.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
And so and just on the scale of how close
these elections were, one point one million votes, Cammy Pierce's
was within four hundred votes. And so even with that
degree of just that close, we're sitting here over three
years later. And so really there's no consequences for bad
behator because they did cheer so many of these judicials
(03:00):
seats in our community paying for it. So Shawn Jones
is thankfully going to be up in twenty six, regardless
of how long this takes to get settled. And if
you look back in twenty three, he was responsible for
several officers getting killed. Let out somebody on multiple felamy
bonds in that individual way, shot the Harrison County sheriff
(03:22):
deputy to routine traffic shot, and then he barricaded himself
and when they were trying to detain him, shot three
other officers. And this was somebody who had five felony convictions,
and Shawn Jones let him out on a fifty thousand
dollars bond when he put a gun to his girlfriend's
head and threatened to kill her.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Unfortunately, he's there the highest stake. Yeah, hoting. Fortunately he's
far from the old one.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
I know.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
We're at the airport right now, so we're gonna, we're
gonna let you go. Are you flying somewhere fun?
Speaker 2 (03:48):
I know work trips to New York, so I'll be
glad to get back to Texas.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
All right, Well, hang in there, appreciate your time this morning.
Alexandra Mieler, Metro board member, former candidate for Harscunty judge herself. Listen, y'all,
have a great day.
