all of this. The Department of Homeland Security on X

what led up to the flood, and that the National

Weather Service executed timely, precise forecasting and warnings despite unprecedented
rainfall overwhelming the region close quote and there's this a
former Houston Food Security Board member by the name of
shah Dave Perkins, who went on TikTok and decided to

Speaker 5 (03:54):
Euston Mayor John Wickmeyer called the comments quote deeply inappropriate.
Perkins's term on the board expired in January. Wi Meyer

we do have a link to the Community Foundation of

we have it on our Facebook page, and we have
it on our ex page. Meantime, the Houston Texans and
Dallas Cowboys are coming together to donate to the cause
(04:52):
one point five million dollars to be exact. The Texans
announced their donation on Saturday, the Cowboys did it on Sunday,
and Mattress Mack took to social media to offer his
condolences as well.
Speaker 12 (05:06):
Right now, I'm not asking you for anything except this. Pray.
Pray for the victims he didn't make it. Pray that
their souls are at peace. Pray for the survivors who
carried the trauma that day with them now and forever.
Speaker 5 (05:18):

it official signing the One Big Beautiful Bill into law
on July fourth.
Speaker 13 (05:28):
Did in this bill as we made permanent the twenty
seventeen Trump's tax cuts, and that was geared for lower
and middle class Americans.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
Now Speaker Mike Johnson filler do's chief Elon Musk says
he's starting a third party because of the bill, which
makes the Trump twenty seventeen tax cuts permanent. You'll hear
Trump's reaction at five point thirty and Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu visits the President at the White House today

our top story. The death told is at least eighty
(07:00):
one in the Hill Country flood disaster. The search for
the survivors or victims now in its fourth day. Forty
one people are still missing statewide. That includes ten campers
and one counselor from Camp Mystic. I'm Cliff Saunders on
Houston's news, weather and traffic station News Radio seven forty KTRH.
Speaker 16 (07:20):
Houston's Morning News continues with Jimmy Barrett.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
It's five oh seven. As we get started here this morning,
we're probably gonna be a little bit more serious this
morning than usual. I mean, not that we can't be serious,
we obviously can. But with what happened in Currville, in
Kirk County, the entire area in Center Point, Comforts Hunt Ingram,
with all those things that happen, it makes sense for
(07:49):
us to try to do we can to be helpful
here today on our program. And one of the things
that you know One of the questions I've already been asked,
I don't know half a dozen times over the course
of the weekend, is you know, who should we help?
You know who can we trust? You know, there's a
lot of you know, a lot of Go fund me
pages that are up and all those types of things,
(08:10):
and you're probably going, okay, but which are legit and
which aren't? And I get that part. I can only
tell you there's a couple of things that I know
that are absolutely the most appropriate things to donate to
that you can feel good knowing that your money is
going to go to a great cause and you don't
have to worry about whether or not it's a scam
or anything along those lines. One of them is the
Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, which was launched
(08:32):
by the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund. It's specifically aimed
at helping people affected in hunt Ingram, Curvale, Centerpoint, and
Comfort all along the Guadaloupe. The relief funds are being
directed to vetted local organizations involved in rescue, relief and
recovery efforts, flood assistance programs for displaced families and individuals,
(08:52):
and rebuilding efforts, and the hardest hit areas. All the
donations are going to go to the Community Foundation dot
net holding a link at KTRH dot com. It's already there.
You can just go to KTRH dot com, click on
the link, it'll take you there. We will be reminding
you throughout the day that it's there if you'd like
to make a donation. The Cajun Navy is another one
(09:13):
comes to mind because they come. They come and help
us every time something like this happens, just like we
go to help them every time something like this happens.
And I know they're here, and I know they've got
a lot of assets here, So that's another good one
to help. And then I got a note about a
former Navy seal who is put together a team of
former Navy seals retired seals. A couple of them are
(09:37):
from Houston. They're up to thirty seals, now more coming.
It's not government funded. They have a whole slew of
things that they're trying to get a hold of, chainsaws,
flotation devices, tarps, all sorts of things. They've raised about
seventy thousand dollars in two days. One hundred percent of
the donations go directly to aiding the rescue team, which
they hope. I think this is the first of many
(09:58):
things they hope to help with, sort of their retirement plan,
if you will, to help communities that are going through
this type of thing. So there's a couple of ideas.
Five ten time for traffic and weather together. Sky Mike
is here ready to fill you in.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
All right, So far, our only thing on the map
right now is your KDIE Freeway westbound outbound at Guessner.
That's taking up the whole feeder. Nothing good's happening down there.
Fortunately you can't see it if you're inbound on the KD.
So we look good from Graham Parkway. It's twenty five
minutes into the President's heads are around town.
Speaker 5 (10:28):
Two ninety is still not too ninety up anywhere.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
We look good.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
From Graham Parkway into the west Loop six ten.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
That's about a twenty six minute stroll north Freeway I
forty five.
Speaker 5 (10:37):
Off to a good start. You know, stuff changes in
two minutes.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
So well, that's why we do traffic on live am
radio every ten minutes. Woodland's down is twenty three minutes
conroback thirty one, so that's easier and if you bring
it in from the sticks. Now we're looking at just
twenty one minutes from Humble down your east Text Freeway.
We're good all the way back to Cleveland, Texas. For now,
I'm Skymike and the Generators Supercenter dot Com traffic.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
From r Katie, rh Top tax Defenders twenty four hour
Weather Center. Terry is here. Let's talk a little bit first, Terry,
bidn'tbind about the rain that we had in Central Virginia. Obviously,
you know we've got massive flooding. We've got eighty one
deads so far. I'm hearing they might end up with
even more flooding today is a possibility. At least rain
(11:21):
is a possibility there where we at As far as
the forecast.
Speaker 17 (11:24):
Central Texas is going to see some more rain again
today and the flood watch is still in effect. But
right now it's in effect until seven o'clock this evening.
Speaker 5 (11:36):
We are seeing the rain chance's ease up.
Speaker 17 (11:41):
So while they are going to get more rain, and
they could get some heavy rain that would cause some
additional flooding on any of those rivers that have already
experienced flooding, it's not going to be a rapid increase,
and then after today it should be a much quieter
stretch of weather, and any additional rain shouldn't aggravate the
(12:02):
problems that already exist.
Speaker 5 (12:04):
But obviously it's going to take a.
Speaker 17 (12:06):
Little while for the water levels to come down, but
we are seeing some slow improvement, and maybe that's the
silver lining that's in all of this.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
I guess we have some rain coming too, don't we.
Speaker 17 (12:18):
We certainly do, and possibly some heavy rain today, So
this is something we'll be watching carefully and folks need
to stay aware of as well. I'm not expecting that
we're going to see massive flooding, but we can get
some localized flooding with these thunder storms sometimes in the summertime,
especially if they pop up and they don't move, or
if they're slow moving storms. We have a fifty percent
(12:41):
chance of thunderstorms later this afternoon, temperatures upper eighties to
low nineties, sixty percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Tomorrow
and Wednesday of forty percent chants some more storms Thursday.
This is all primarily in the afternoon hours, and then
maybe some dryer weather or less rain. Only a twenty
percent chance of rain right now. By Friday, temperature right
(13:03):
now seventy eight. Here are your officials severe wettest station.
News Radio seven forty KTRH.
Speaker 16 (13:09):
It's Houston's Morning News, brought to you Biden, New South
Windows Solutions. Now back to Jimmy Barrett and the Houston
Morning News team all the info you need to take
on the day.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
It is five twenty now here on Houston's Morning News,
News Radio seven forty KTRH. Big story of the day obviously,
what happened in Kerrville, what happened in Kerr County with
the flooding in central Texas in the Hill Country, and
the recovery efforts. And of course this is Monday, right,
so you know there's gonna be a lot of Monday
morning quarterbacking. And one of the quarterbacking items is did
(13:45):
they warned the public? Did local officials warn the public
the way they should have? They knew that they had
plenty of warning that the river could flood. I don't
think anybody anticipated it rising twenty six plus feet in
about forty five minutes, which you did. But there was
(14:05):
plenty of warning that should have maybe gone out into
a more direct way to the people who are camping
alongside the River. Here's a report on this from CBS Texas.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
Thank you sheriff, thank you all for being here today.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
That is Sunday news conference.
Speaker 18 (14:22):
We tried once again to get answers to why there
were no evacuations ordered despite warnings from the Texas Division
of Emergency Management on their website. TM posted a full
news release on July second saying they were activating emergency
response resources to the area because of flood threats. They
even outline the assets that were being deployed to include
rescue task forces. One of the questions that still hasn't
(14:44):
been answered three days into this is despite t EM's
warning on July second, July third that something like this
could have happened, that the threat existed, why that information
didn't get down to the camps and why.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
They weren't evacuated.
Speaker 5 (14:57):
Can you answer that now?
Speaker 4 (14:58):
That is a great question, But again we want to
make sure that we continue to focus.
Speaker 19 (15:01):
We still have eleven missing children that we want to
get reunited with our families.
Speaker 18 (15:05):
Cerville City Manager Dalton Rice didn't answer the question, neither
did the share than the news conference. Abruptly, Andy, sir,
there are families who deserve better than that.
Speaker 5 (15:14):
Oh, I came and how fast it came.
Speaker 18 (15:17):
Brent and Jessica Mason live right near the Guadalupa River
and told us they're upset at officials not answering the
question three days into the tragedy.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Those questions need to be answered.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
But my prayers do you go out to them.
Speaker 5 (15:28):
How we can prevent that?
Speaker 11 (15:30):
We can prevent the I mean, we can't prevent a
flash flood, but we can.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
We can definitely work on.
Speaker 11 (15:35):
A better evacuation system, you know, for something like this
in the future.
Speaker 18 (15:39):
And this just speaks to the fierceness of the floodwaters.
Speaker 20 (15:42):
Yeah, and this is like mild actually, and you go
up there, like where the cannon is.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
It just wiped everything out.
Speaker 18 (15:47):
I caught up with Congressmanship Roy of Cerville, who says,
you can assure federal officials are also wanting to know
the same.
Speaker 20 (15:53):
I have no doubt that we'll be having the appropriate
conversations that need to be had, both federal, state, and local.
Speaker 5 (15:59):
We've got plenty that we need to do there.
Speaker 18 (16:01):
He adds an oversight committee will likely investigate as well.
Right now, he says the main focus should be on
the continuing rescue and recovery efforts of victims.
Speaker 20 (16:10):
But what I do know is these are things that
we need to do to go through and figure out
the answers in the future. But right now, let's just
focus on the operations here.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
That's of course ship for right and yeah, day four today,
of whatever operations you can call it search or rescue
or recovery. At this point, I'm thinking it's more recovery
than anything else, but who knows. Five twenty three, Let's
get to traffic and weather together, sky Mike.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
But hey, I got a North Freeway problem and just
popped up Jimmy southbound.
Speaker 5 (16:35):
This is right before Tidwell. I have forty five.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
The back order slip has started from Little York southbound.
We're looking at an extra three or four already. Give
me the five thirty break. I pretty much can guarantee
we'll have some language shortly, Skymichael, the USA Rvresorts.
Speaker 2 (16:51):

Your best ways are round Houston. Next on the ten

Speaker 2 (17:45):
Five twenty five is our time now here on Houston's
morning news news Radio seven forty KTRH. Like I said,
Monday morning quarterbacking, there's gonna be a lot of Monday
morning quarterbacking going on, mainly about the warning system and
whether or not there needs to be improved in in
the warning system. Clearly there does you know? I realized
that forty five minutes is not much time, not much
(18:06):
elaps time. If you've seen, by the way, the the
elapsed videos, the elapse time videos of the flooding. Just
I mean, it's just amazing to watch those things. And
by the way, let me let me also caution you
that you know you'll you'll see a lot of videos
out there right now about flooding. Many are legit, some
(18:30):
are not. You know you Luckily, I think the ones
that are AI generated you can kind of tell. And
there's some there's some really insensitive videos that are AI generated,
just just an intention, I think, to kind of get
all of our attention and to get you to watch them.
(18:50):
So if you are going to watch those things, do
it with a certain level of question. Not all the
things you will see out there right now legit, I can.
I can vouch for everything that will be on ktr
H dot com. I can't bouch for everything else you're
going to see out there. Five twenty six. Here News
Radio seven forty KTRH. It's time to take a look
at your money. Jeff Bellinger's here and Jimmy, Good morning.
Speaker 21 (19:09):
Teriff Worries maybe front and center as investors get back
to work after the long holiday weekend. Wednesday is the
deadline for American trading partners to negotiate new deals with
Washington or face higher tariffs. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessen has
suggested three week extensions could be available for countries that
are struggling to meet the deadline. Stock market futures are
(19:32):
all pointing lower at the moment. Price of oil fell
after opek Plus agreed to increase production by more than
expected starting next month. The increase raises the risk of
an oversupply at a time when traders were already worried.
The tariffs could be a drag on world demand, and
if a forecast from Core Site Research is right, retailers
(19:52):
can look forward to a solid back to school shopping season.
Core Site project spending will increase by more than three
percent and top thirty three billion dollars. I'm Jeff Bublinger,

Speaker 23 (20:53):
Hay, good mornings time.

News Radio seven forty k TRH. It's time now for
(21:45):
the news. Here's Cliff Saunders.
Speaker 5 (21:47):
Thank you, Jimmy. It is five thirty one on KTRH.
Our top story this morning.
Speaker 20 (21:51):
There are ten camp missedic campers and accounted for in
one councilor.
Speaker 5 (21:57):
Kirk County Sheriff Larry Laitha state why. The search for
more than forty people missing from the Hill Country floods
is now in day number four, the death toll surpassing
eighty thirty of the dead, almost thirty of the dead
being children. The President signed a major Disaster Declaration yesterday
that activates FEMA in the region. Texas Congressman Chip Royce
(22:18):
as the White House has promised to do everything in
its power to help.
Speaker 20 (22:22):
The President has been responsive. He's reached out to me personally.
The Secretary was here yesterday. I called the Secretary Secretary Nome.
She responded in fifteen minutes Roy on.
Speaker 5 (22:32):
Fox, there is more rain predicted for that part of
the state today. Many of the victims were either from
Houston or had Euston ties. Jane Ragsdale was the director
at the Heart of the Hills Camp in Kerr County
and remembered by former campers like Jordan Kajar.
Speaker 25 (22:49):
She hosted this class for girls for thirteen and fourteen,
and you would learn basic life skills. I learned how
to change a hire and check my oil. I learned
the proper way to fold an American flag instead a table.
Speaker 5 (22:58):
Kajar talking to our TV partner Channel Too. The danger
though not over yet with rain in the forecast today.
People forced once again yesterday to go to higher ground.
Speaker 26 (23:08):
People here are worried it's raining right now, and what
they're freaking out about is, you know, our rerun of
what we saw the other day. You know, we know
that we've not seen that kind of precipitation, but it
is so fresh on their minds that that's exactly what
they're thinking about.
Speaker 5 (23:22):
Reporter Gauge Golding will be joining us from Kirk County
at six point twenty on Houston's Morning News. It's now
five thirty three. Local officials in that county are defending
their actions after accusations that they didn't do enough to
avoid the tragedy that again is still unfolding.
Speaker 27 (23:38):
This is the most dangerous river valley in the United States,
and we deal with floods on a regular basis. When
it rains, we get water. We had no reason to
believe that this was going to be an anything like
what's happened here.
Speaker 5 (23:50):
Kirk County Judge Rob Kelly, and the judge was backed
up by Texas Senator John Cornyn.
Speaker 28 (23:55):
This was one hundred year flood event in an area
that had been known to flood, but thing like this
where the floodwaters rose twenty six feet in about forty
five minutes in the middle of the night.
Speaker 5 (24:07):
But the left, they see things differently. To them, they
blame Trump for all of it. Everything.
Speaker 29 (24:14):
When the president cuts all of the early warning systems
and the weathering forecast abilities of the government, these are
the results that we're going to start to see on
a daily basis because he's put this country in so
much danger.
Speaker 5 (24:30):
Rosie O'Donnell, from her home in Ireland on TikTok. It's
five point thirty four. The President celebrated the fourth of
July by signing the Big Beautiful Bill and then blasted
Elon Musk last night for launching a third party in protest.
Speaker 10 (24:45):
I think it's ridiculous to start a third party. We
have a tremendous success with the Republican Party. The Democrats
have lost their way, but it's always been a two
party system.
Speaker 5 (24:56):
Elon's calling his party the America Party. One of the
things we'll see with the President's agenda in place is
an expansion of ICE to deal with mass deportations.
Speaker 30 (25:06):
Only officers and agents, but our crucial support staff and
our attorneys that do ensure that these illegal immigrants that
we are processing are doing get receiving it due process.
Speaker 5 (25:15):
Meantime, more violent anti ICE protests over the holiday, several
arrests made in radical left cities like Portland, Oregon. But
another heavily pushed protest called Sick of Ice Sick of
Trump was a huge dud in San Antonio.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
It was such a flop. Less than eighty people showed up.
Speaker 31 (25:33):
Take the l He had a small crowd. The Summer
of Love is already over.
Speaker 32 (25:37):
That's Andy Hoague with the Travis County Republican Party, who
says the bottom line is most Americans support what Trump
is doing.
Speaker 31 (25:47):
Pulling overwhelmingly shows that most Americans want the law to
be enforced. Joe Biden did not enforce the law. Most Americans,
I think support what's going on.
Speaker 32 (25:55):
The numbers don't lie, with eighty percent of Americans supporting deportations.
Jeff Biggs News Radio seven forty KT eight.
Speaker 5 (26:04):
Turns out the dangerous Venezuelan game trend deer Ragua has
an offshoot competitor which already has a foothold in Houston,
with sixteen members arrested here last week.
Speaker 33 (26:14):
Houston is an epicenter, it's largest city in the South,
so it's not surprising that we have this former prison
gang from Venezuela that is laid playing to certain areas
of Houston right now.
Speaker 5 (26:25):
Retired HBD Captain doctor Greg Freeman says, HPD is skilled
at dealing with gangs like this, and they've already done
the research required to identify and shut them down. Five
point thirty sixty Astros complete the sweep in LA, beating
the Dodgers five to one. They lead the Mariners by

strows are going to the All Star Game next week
in Atlanta. Jeremy Painier, Josh Hey, hater excuse me, and
Hunter Brown recapping our top story, the search for survivors
of the Hill Country floods now in day number four,
dozens are still missing, including ten campers and one counselor
from Camp Mystic. The death toll now at eighty two
(27:12):
at least. I'm Cliff Saunders on Houston's news, weather and
traffic station, News Radio seven KTRH.
Speaker 2 (27:19):
Check you and off for what's developing.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
This is just developing out of the Middle East now
right now.
Speaker 22 (27:25):
It's developing one News Radio seven KTRH.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
It's five point thirty eight here on Houston's morning News
this morning, all right, makeup something. As a man, I
don't seem to need to worry a whole heck of
a lot about I thought this is kind of interesting.
This is a kind of like a gen Z story.
I mean, they are a little they are a little
different than the previous generations. Hot new dating trend for women,
(27:56):
we're told, is to show up for the first date
without doing her hair or makeup, kind of like that
dada here I am, Take me or leave me? No, seriously,
show up with no makeup, not having your hair done,
and then see if they just like you for you
(28:19):
or did they are? They are? They just attracted to
the hot chicken the makeup. I guess. The other side
thing would be that you can get ready for There's
no excuse for being late for the date, right, It's
not going to take a whole lot of time to
get ready. They do bathe, don't they? How about shaving
their armpits? Do you shave their I mean, how far
does this go past the no makeup? Some women are
(28:42):
even taking it a step further, we're told, by gradually
wrapping up the amount of makeup they wear on the
second and the third dates. In other words, they only
start dolling themselves up once you've proven that you're worth
the effort. The other reason, I guess is because gen
z or Is evidently lets it's likely to go on
the classic first date like dinner in the movie. They're
(29:02):
more likely to do do casual stuff like hiking or
biking or doing something outdoorsy versus going to restaurant five
forty time for traffic and weather together. Let's tell you
a date thing, okay, Terry, cover your ears. Okay.
Speaker 4 (29:17):
So I had a lady one time that told me
she was in the woodlands, and she told me after
the date that she purposely, and she says, this is common,
did not shave her legs so that you know, she
would be alternately and that way, just in case, you know,
we were drinking a little much wine. It was easier
for her to go no, no, no, no, no, no,
you know, thinking with her stuff, she's not shaving her legs.
Speaker 31 (29:39):
There.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
All right, Terry, you can reopen your ears. Didn't realize
that that was a blocking tactic, but okay, yeah, it's
all right.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
There we go.
Speaker 4 (29:45):
All right, So let's hit the east Loop six' ten

Speaker 17 (30:25):
Pattern Ken We, no we're not going to see a
substantial change in our overall weather, pattern at least around.
HERE i think we'll see a little bit of an
improvement In Central, texas where they've just had torrential rain
throughout the entire holiday. Weekend but we're starting to see
(30:45):
that taper off, somewhat and we'll continue to have the
possibility of showers and, thunderstorms pretty typical summertime.
Speaker 5 (30:53):
STUFF a fifty percent chance.
Speaker 17 (30:57):
Of thunderstorms this, afternoon but some of the storms could
produce some heavy. Rain so we'll be watching that upper

Five fifty. One our time here In houston's morning. News
the flooding along The Guadalupe river In Kirk, county especially In.
Kerrville death toll currently at eighty. Two we still have
people who are. Missing probably the worst PART i would
think for any of these search and rescue people is
(33:46):
coming across the bodies of. Children and there has been
a lot of kids who have died as a result
of this. Flooding BUT i think we're all still shaking our.
Heads if you've seen any of the time lapse video
of The guadalupe rising from the, rain it's just mind
(34:09):
boggling how quickly the river came, up and how high it,
got and just how powerful that water. Was joining us
to talk about guy knows a little bit about. FLOODING i,
mean he's seen plenty of it here In. HARSCUNTY i
was kind of having a little bit of A harvey
flashback looking in some of the video on this, Stuff Jeff,
linder because it kind of reminded me of that we've
had a storm system that basically parked itself over a
(34:32):
specific area Of texas and just capt. Arraining, yeah you,
know this is the data is still coming.
Speaker 35 (34:40):
In we had the gauge At, Hunt texas and the
gauge At, Kerville, texas both taken out by the. Flooding
but it looks like preminarily at The, Hunt texas, gauge
this is the highest floods are passing the nineteen thirty
two flood out there that we've ever experienced in The
Guadalupee river and just you, know recently with the fatality,
(35:01):
counts what has got to this appears to be now
the worst flood in The United states based on fatalities
since the nineteen seventy Nine Big Thompson canyon flood In.
Colorado non tropical, related so not Like colleen or something like.
That but you, KNOW i think it's very hard for
a lot of us in other parts Of texas that
(35:22):
don't live in That Hill country flash Flood alley area
THAT i thirty five corridor west over to The Hill
country to really try to wrap our heads around how
the water can come up so, fast because what we
deal with here In houston is more slow rising. Water you,
know the water comes up in the. Streets it's not,
moving it's not really carrying cars. Away but it's a
much much different type of flooding that they get out
(35:45):
in the hill. Country and THAT i thirty Five Austin
San Antonio corridor and then a lot of it's the,
topography so they get the same type of rain that
we get here In. Houston these really really intense rainfall,
rates you, Know saturday night And friday night rainfall rates
four or, five six seven inches an.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
Hour up Around Marble. Falls same types of stuff we, get,
hear it's.
Speaker 35 (36:07):
Not the difference is they have these limestone hills out
there and it funnels the water off like a concrete parking,
lot and this water goes very quickly into whether these
normally dry creeks and river beds maybe low.
Speaker 2 (36:20):
Flowing and the water comes.
Speaker 35 (36:22):
Up it funnels that water very quickly into these areas
with these steep cliffs and the water comes up very.
Fast and that's exactly what we saw unfortunately on the
Upper Guadalipe river At. Hunt The North fork and The
South fork of The guadalipe kind of come together right
where the city Of hunt is the South fork.
Speaker 2 (36:41):
Is where you have more of the, population the camp
and the R v.
Speaker 35 (36:45):
Parks and all that kind of, Stuff and unfortunately that's
where the magnitude of the rainfall is. Greatest about ten
inches fell just up stream Of, hunt And hunt is
very near what we call the headwaters where the river,
starts and so as that water came, down there's just
not a lot of time in these types of, instances
like you, mentioned twenty nine thirty feet of rise of
(37:06):
the water level in an hour or. So and even
if even if you could attempt to try to, move for,
example people and RVs and stuff like, that it just
comes up so fast that in those types of, situations
in a lot of, cases and we've seen this before out,
there this isn't the first time we've seen.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
This it's just got to climb to. Safety AND i
know that's you're trying.
Speaker 35 (37:30):
To wrap your head around that at three o'clock in the,
morning you're telling me to climb to. Safety it's exactly
what do you have to do sometimes in these hill
country areas to save your life up in trees and
up the. Hillside it's just a, horrific horrific.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
Event and it kind of.
Speaker 35 (37:49):
Showcases what can happen out there in That texico. Current you,
know the same area was hit In july nineteen eighty
seven and we had a bus of forty three kids
at a camp down in The comfort area on The
Guadalupe river that was washed away and we had ten fatalities.
There so this area's prone to this type of. Stuff
they get these, big heavy rains and the results can
(38:12):
be just absolutely devastating and.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
Tragic that being the. Case you, know there's, Obviously, jeff
there would be a lot Of monday morning. Quarterbacking after,
all this Is monday morning about. Warnings when warnings were,
issued whether or not evacuation should occurred have occurred sooner
than what they, did knowing that this area is prone
to this type of. Flooding, again it doesn't happen every,
year clearly they call. It last time it happened at
(38:36):
this kind of level was probably the better part one
hundred years. Ago but you, know it can. Happen do
we need to come up with a better evacuation system
for these flood prone rivers that can rise so? Quickly you,
know a good it's a good.
Speaker 35 (38:50):
Question it's a question that you, know we just went
through this almost ten years ago on The Blanco river At, Wimberley.
Texas very similar situation that, happened and a lot of
work has been put in on The Blanco river At,
Wimberley texas was gauging and flood warning systems and potentially
sirens systems and protocols in place, of you, know for
(39:12):
expecting heavy rain or the gauge is, rising you, know
you put first responders to watch the river and do
the notifications and that type of. STUFF i think the you,
know the problem we get into out in The Central
texas area and The Hill country is that you just
can't gauge and put any warning system every single creek.
Speaker 2 (39:33):
And river out.
Speaker 35 (39:33):
There, yeah there's certainly some obviously The guadaloupe The frio
that are much more populated and have much more have
a lot more visitors that probably could utilize these systems
a little bit you know. Better but you, know there's
there's there's always gonna be these ungauged dry creeks that can.
Turn and that's exactly what happened In Marble falls And
(39:54):
Laga vista On friday. Night we're talking Cal creek And
Hamilton creek came up to record live and even there
the devastation is tremendous up in that.
Speaker 2 (40:04):
Area but it's.
Speaker 35 (40:05):
Always going to be some little creek or river out
there that it hasn't happened in one hundred, years or
it hasn't happened, recently.
Speaker 31 (40:14):
You.
Speaker 2 (40:14):
Know in this.
Speaker 35 (40:15):
Particular, instance it just really was when you put all
the pieces, together the rainfall was in the right exact.
Location you're talking about a holiday weekend where you have
a lot more visitors into this area than you would normally.
Have you, know a tremendous amount of visitors into this
area in a very vulnerable situation and a very vulnerable
(40:36):
spot in the river out. There and then, lastly of
course in the middle of the, night and just like At,
wimberley this happened in the middle of the night where
our warning communication systems to hit your cell, phones the
only work if you get. It so cell phone receptions
a little spoty out. There if you're, sleeping you may
not hear, it and a lot of people have turned
(40:56):
those notifications, off so the warning system works only if
you can receive.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
It on the end of, It, yeah bottom line is

(01:09:57):
the Instability In southeast texas. Starting today in the next,
several days so we will be dealing with, some thunderstorms mainly.
Afternoon thunderstorms some of those storms could produce some heavy
downpours in, local Areas but i'm not expecting any widespread problems,
to develop just our typical. SUMMERTIME downpours a fifty percent

chance of those happening, later today and then a sixty

it so not. Everybody gets wet some people who get
the rain will just, get manageable rain, i'll call, it you.

seen i'm sure you have toured around the community to
(01:34:34):
see the aftermath. Of this funding have you ever seen?
Speaker 8 (01:34:37):
Anything, Like, this hey, Jimmy you know i've seen, some
Flash floods but i've never seen it like this just giving.
You an, Idea right now i'm standing and everybody's doing
shift change right now and search. And rescue Guys there's
probably i'm betting two hundred guys here you know that,
are changing over getting ready to go back out again to.
Look more today but it is hard to imagine until.
(01:34:59):
You see it had a guy, with me yesterday, very
WELL known and i took him out to the river
and he was shocked at. WHAT he, saw i mean
he's seen a lot of things in his life and
he was shocked at how. Bad, THIS was yeah i
don't again you begin to account How many vehicles at.
ONE point time i saw a video of cars Floating
down the guadalupe and they just looked like it was one.
(01:35:19):
Vehicle after another there's probably hundreds of cars that ended up.
In that river and in some cases we're hearing that
not just, not just vehicles but people were carried, by
the reverie some of the ones that were rescued twenty
miles away from where they went.
Speaker 2 (01:35:34):
Into.
Speaker 8 (01:35:34):
The, river yeah, yeah that's, uh you know that's actually
not real uncommon in flash floods like this for people
to be. Carried that far we've seen somebody had ridden a,
DOOR one time i think about Twenty Miles whenever lando
river flooded in JUNCTION and, it's i mean it's amazing
the strength people can find to hang on and how
long they could stain a tree if if they managed
(01:35:56):
to grab a tree or. Something like that so we're
really grateful that there were a lot of people that
were able. To, be rescued unfortunately there are people that did,
not make it and the search and rescue teams have
been working. Day and night a lot of people out
there really really working hard to try to find.
Speaker 2 (01:36:13):
Everybody, they can well We know the daity two have.
Died so far do you have any idea of how many?
Are still missing how many people are they? Still, looking
for no, That's you know i'm sure that there. Is
a number but one of the problems we had Is
it Was fourth.
Speaker 8 (01:36:27):
Of july weekend they were going to have A lot
Of fourth of, july festivities here so a lot of
people came from out of town and were camping.
Speaker 5 (01:36:33):
On the river and it's possible that there are people
that it's not even known that.
Speaker 2 (01:36:38):
They're, missing, Yet yeah yeah so do you have a
feeldyet for WHEN this, becomes i know it's still considered
a search and rescue mission, at this point but we're
in the. Day four now do you have any sort
of feeling for when this becomes just a recovery effort?
Speaker 8 (01:36:53):
At, THIS point yeah i think the reality is is
we're probably at that point were open that we. FIND people,
alive i, Mean you know i'm just going to keep
holding hope that we find somebody that's made. It through
this but the reality is as we're shifting into a
recovery recovery, mode right now and then the other thing
that they're also now shifted over towards looking at infrastructure
(01:37:16):
and trying to figure out where the damage is. Throughout
the river it's about thirty miles of river that, comes
Through here and i've been out, there several times and
there's a real famous place a lot of people listening,
and probably know It's Called, the hunt store and water
was ten feet above the. ROOF of, that i mean
it's just it's wiped. Entire houses away it's pretty.
Speaker 2 (01:37:38):
Hard, to imagine yeah we're kind of having really gotten into,
that mode Yet have we it's, Awfully early here but
do we have any sort of a feel for a
price tying. For this disaster how many millions or how
many billions of dollars it'll take in order to get.
Things right, Again you know, i'm Just estimating but i'm
betting it's going to be in. The billion range.
Speaker 8 (01:37:57):
That's the number of houses that, are Gone fences that's
that's another thing is a lot offenses have been wiped out,
to you know livestock getting out. And everything else and
so county commissioners are doing a great job trying to assess.
THROUGHOUT the county i was out there with the county
commissioner yesterday from the precinct that got hit Really Hard,
in ingraman hunt, and you know. He's grown up there's
(01:38:19):
he just they couldn't believe all the places that he
used to know.
Speaker 37 (01:38:23):
Were there and they.
Speaker 2 (01:38:23):
Weren't there, anymore you know there's been a lot of
chriss from past administrations as far as the response rate
for these. TYPES of disasters i got the impression That
that the trump administration has kind of. Turned That around
the president was informed of. This Right away christy nome
came to. Town right away i'm sure you're seeing federal
assets at work in that. Community, right now yeah we're
(01:38:46):
starting to.
Speaker 8 (01:38:46):
SEE them here, i want, TO you know i want
to complement state the state agencies how, GREAT They've done Text, PARKS,
and wildlife dps several, others tee them which was extremely
critical in This as Text Department. Of emergency, MANAGEMENT you
know i rushed over here as soon as soon as
we found out what, was going ON and when, i
got here THE chief of ttem was already here on
(01:39:08):
the ground and very quickly he figured out what building
we need to base, everybody out of how do we
get all, the agents together and the. AMOUNT of Coordination
i think texans have a lot to be proud of
how well their government was able to get here quickly and.
