Speaker 1 (00:00):
Healthcare was a big topic last night. House passed healthcare
did not include a renewal of the subsidies, which of
course what Democrats and some modern Republicans want, including modern
Republicans in the US Senate, which is why at least
some publications are saying it doesn't you know stand you
know rats, you know what the rats behind making it
through the Senate. I don't know if that's accurate or not,
(00:20):
but I know who to ask about that. Congressman Chip
Roy joins us. Good morning, sir, you're up late last night.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Well, we got it done pretty well into the evening
and then we were working to clean up some stuff.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
But it was good to get it passed and get
it over to the Senate. Now what do you think
happens to it in the Senate?
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Well, this is you know, look, let's just follow the
listeners out there, and you summarized it pretty well. The
subsidies were not included, and those are to be clear,
COVID era subsidies that goes straight to insurance Companies' why
President Trump has been very vocal and correct that we
shouldn't be subsidizing insurance companies. We should be helping average Americans,
and the truth is this bill has some good stuff
(00:59):
in there about associate health plans PBM reform, you know,
these middlemen that are driving up the price of drugs,
as well as some other changes and what we call
cast sharing reductions. And bottom line is all of this
we expect we drive premiums down for average OAR working
families across the board, not just a small subset of people.
So we think the Senate, you know, you're right, they're
going to run into resistance by Democrats who want the subsidies,
(01:22):
So it might be difficult to get this through the Senate,
but we hope to ratchet up pressure, and frankly, I
hope Speaker Johnson's correct, we've come back in January and
pass additional reforms that are even more transformational. I think
we got a lot more work to do if we
want to drive down premiums for broadworking families.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
You know this is going to sound a little cynical,
but I want to ask you about it because I
saw Senator Jeff Van Drew on Fox last night talking
about this and he kind of pointed out the fact, Hey, listen,
we've got some Republicans that are running in districts where
he says I've won my race by eighteen points. We
have guys who won their race by one or two points,
and they're afraid to pass something without the subsidies in
it because they don't think they can get re elected.
(01:59):
Is this really going to be a all about who
can get reelected?
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Well, I don't never accept that premise. Remember that five
years ago when I represented a good chunk of Austin.
I had a district that was an R plus three
or four district, meaning it was a pretty close district,
and Wendy Davis ran and it was a thirty million
dollar race. I ran on health care freedom. I ran
on the fact that Democrats broke our healthcare system of Obombacare.
(02:26):
I ran on transformative reform, empowering patients and doctors and
nots insurance companies and government bureaucrats. And guess what, I
won by seven or eight points. And I was able
to win staying on offense. They ran all sorts of
ads against me, saying I was taking away healthcare, and
again I represented a large chunk of liberal Austin. You
can win these fights. You just have to be confident
(02:47):
about your message. If you try to go buy votes
with big government subsidies, You're not going to win. So look,
with a due respect to those handful of members, we
shouldn't be governing that way in the first place. We
have a responsibility to go fight for the people that
we represent and drive policy that's going to make their
lives better. Subsidies aren't going to make the average Americans'
lives better.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
I want to get a thirty second quote if I could,
from you on the President's speech last night. I'm sure
you at least saw a portion of what he had
to say. Do you think the message was right where
it needed to be.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Well, I haven't been able to watch the whole speech
because we were doing our job on the hill, and
I'll look at it today. But I do think what
the President's trying to do is make very clear that
we've been fighting for the people over the last year.
We've delivered transformative change in a whole lot of areas.
Gotten the woke out of the Pentagon and listeners are
up excitement and du Dasmithy academies. Our military strong, secured
the borders, stop the bleeding, removing bad actors from our country,
(03:42):
passed the tax cut pass reforms, reform decade and did
what we need to do. Now we've got a lot
more to do this year.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
All right, Dodgrismon, well said and mery Christmasir appreciates your time.
That is Congressman chip Roy, you all have a great day.
We'll see tomorrow morning bright in early five. Hope to
see you at the SAF four on Am nine to
fifty KPRC.
