Speaker 1 (00:00):
So Houston needs more cops and New York City may
not be cop friendly anymore. With Mondami as the mayor.
He certainly talked about defunding the police in the past,
He's had very derogatory things to say about the NYPD,
So might some of those officers make their way to Houston, Texas? Well?

(00:20):
There was a little recruitment ad that came out just
kind of pointing out the obvious about where Houston is
compared to New York City, and evidently it's getting a
pretty good response. Doug Griffith joins us, president of the
Houston Police Officers Union. What kind of response have you
gotten to that ad so far? Oh?

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Well, I'll be honest with you, We've gotten quite a
few calls. I filled it probably ten yesterday, and some
other people in my office filled a bunch. So we
have some really good interests for those guys in New
York that are overworked and underappreciated.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
What kind of questions are they asking about Houston?

Speaker 2 (00:55):
A lot of the questions stem around, Hey, how do
we get down there? How is the process work where
we have to go through the academy as are a
latter class.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
There's a whole lot of things that play into it.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
You know, if you're in New York and you're a sergeant,
how would that equate down here. There's just different areas
and aspects that they want to know about. Some of
the bigger questions was like the cost of living. How
is it down there versus how it is up north?
So that is a big difference.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Did did you tell them anywhere better than where you're living?

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Absolutely? Hey, at the end of the day, you want
to work for somebody that appreciates your hard work and
values you as an employee. That is not going to
happen there. It's not come on down here. The citizens
love us, the mayor, the city council, the state legislature.
Everything is moving in the right direction here in Texas,

(01:48):
and we invite anybody that wants to come down and
be a hard working police officer, someone who has a
passion for this job, gone down, We're hiring.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
You know, Doug, New Yorkers are a little different breed
than your typical Houstonian. Is there any concern about bringing
people in from New York that may have a hard
time adjusting to being here in the South with us?

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Hey, we have several officers There were several on my
boarder directors that are from New York, and they've loved it.
They have thrived here. They went from having a one
bedroom apartment that you hit your door when you open
it or hit your bed when you open it, to
come in here living in a very nice three bedroom home.
So they have just loved being here in Texas. If

(02:33):
you can get past the heat, hey, you're all right.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Well, you get used to the heat, I can tell
you that they'll be okay, and then they certainly be
a lot better off in the wintertime, won't they.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Oh yes, sir, yes, sir.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
And again, do you really want to work somebody that
considers you a racist, considers you anti queer, considers you
to be corrupt, And we've had.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
Some people call me and go, oh he chased his stance.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Well, you can't really change your stance on things where
you call a whole group. If a major city chief
made a sexist, racist, homophobic comment, he would never be
chief in this nation again. Ever, even if he tried
to walk it back and say, hey, guys, I've changed
my stance, no, it ain't gonna happen. In that same matter,

(03:23):
he hasn't changed he knows he's got to have one
hundred and fifty of those guys on his side who
are going to be his security detail.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Right, exactly right, You're absolutely right about that. So we've
got quite a shortage of officers here. Are you getting
a feeling on how many officers we might be able
to hire from New York City and how that might
put a dent in the amount officers we have on
duty here?

Speaker 2 (03:45):
Well, like I said, we're twelve hundred down, so I
don't care if it's two or two hundred. We'll take
as many as we can get. We need twelve hundred
officers in this city. As soon as we can get
them here and we are ready to go, well, we'll
put them through an academy class. We pay for them
to go through the academy class. If we can get
a lateral class going, we'll move into a lateral class.
There's all kinds of things we can do to get

(04:07):
our numbers boosted up, and we want that to happen.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
As soon as possible.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
All right, Doug.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
The citizens of this city deserve the protection and we
want to get them there.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Amen, sir, Amen, Well, good luck with it. Hope you
get hundreds of officers coming in, Doug Griffith joining us
the president at the Houston Police Officers Union
