Speaker 3 (00:17):
Good morning, five am. As we get started this morning
here on Houston's Morning News, I'm Jimmy Barrett on our
top stories this half hour. Are we about to be
reimbursed for Operation lone Star? Why did Republicans do so
poorly in local school board licens? And coming up at
five to eight, when will the tariff related shortages begin?
Details in the minutes ahead. You're in Houston's Morning News. First,

(00:40):
we're checking out that morning dress problem. What's that's gonna mine?

Speaker 4 (00:42):
I don't know. It's a long story. I'll get to
it at the ten.

Speaker 5 (00:45):
I'm seeing some stuff on my Papeel's pocket radar here
as far as looks like showers to the northwest. So
you know, if you don't watch out, get a nice
early start, turn that snooze off, you might end up
with some stupid problems. To forty nine, I'll take a
look here Pinehurst to the north. Sam, you're getting by
just fine. Just bring it down a notch for me.
Also two to ninety those of you who had a

(01:05):

Parkway to the West Loop again. Wet freeways is the thing.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
From our KTRH top tax defenders twenty four hour weather
center will become partly cloudy. Today's showers and storms are
possible with the high temperature right about eighty four. Terry
Smith with the complete forecast coming up in nine minutes
right now sixty nine at your official severe weather station,
News Radio seven forty k TRH. It is time now
for the news. Here's Cliff Saunders, Thank you.

Speaker 6 (01:35):
Jimmy, and good morning everybody, five o one on KGRH.
Our top story. When the Biden administration did not secure
our border, Texas filled the gap. DHS secretary in Congress
talking about what Texas had to deal with during the
Biden disaster at the border. The state wants to be
reimbursed to the tune of eleven billion dollars. Noam told

(01:56):
Congress yesterday that the White House is quote working on it.
A mixed day on the legal front for the administration.
As a federal judge appointed by President Trump refused to
change her order requiring the administration to bring back a
twenty year old Venezuelan deported to Al Salvador, but the
US Supreme Court gave the White House a big win.

Speaker 7 (02:17):
The divided Supreme Court will allow the Trump administration to
enforce a ban on transgender military service while legal challenges proceed.
The majority of justices will allow the band to be enforced.
As appeals courts considered the case, the court's three liberals,
Justices Kagan, Sodamayor, and Jackson, would have kept a policy
on hold.

Speaker 6 (02:36):
Jared Halpern reporting, now there is a bill in the
House that could lead to impeaching these activist federal judges.
But how Speaker Mike Johnson listened to him. He doesn't
seem like he's on board with this.

Speaker 8 (02:47):
We've had fifteen federal judges in peace in the entire
history of the country. I mean, there may be some
that I feel mere at that, but you got to
get the votes for it, right, and it's a very
high burden, and frankly, the bar is high crimes and misdemeanors.

Speaker 6 (02:59):
Johnson adding that if an impeachment got through the House,
it might not get through the Senate. Senate majority of
Leader John Thune wants to speed up the process of
getting Trump's big, beautiful build onto his desk.

Speaker 9 (03:12):
This is a piece of legislation that has broad by
Paris and support.

Speaker 6 (03:15):
Tune is afraid that Democrats will try to slow this
down with their proposed changes. So Trump isn't just trying
to deal with Democrats. Sean Fleetwood at the Federalist says,
he's also got red state rhinos that are slowing him down.

Speaker 10 (03:28):
We have the swamp in Washington, d C. But we
also have fifty swamps across the country and state capitals.
And that's completely true when you just look at these
numerous examples that I listed in the article of the
so called red states just repeatedly fighting the priorities of
their voters.

Speaker 6 (03:42):
And here in Texas, Democrat backed House Republicans like former
Speaker Date Feelin have blocked conservative backed legislation. In Austin, Texas,
House Speaker Dustin Burroughs reportedly fires policy director Jimmy Skipton. Apparently,
Skipton directed committee chairs to kill several bills, claiming it
was under orders from Burrows, allegedly though he was doing

(04:04):
it to benefit his wife, who's a liberal lobbyist five
h four on k TRH. Despite the media's freak out
over President Trump's first few months, voters are with them for.

Speaker 4 (04:16):
The long haul.

Speaker 9 (04:17):
The left and the legacy media have been trying to
drive the narrative that President Trump's support is crumbling due
to the chaos of his policies, But as CNN recently
found out, Trump voters have no regrets.

Speaker 11 (04:28):
Yes, I would.

Speaker 4 (04:29):
If you go back in time, would you vote for
Donald Trump? Yes or no? Yes?

Speaker 1 (04:32):
If you add to it all over again, would you
vote for Donald sooth?

Speaker 4 (04:35):
Yes or not?

Speaker 12 (04:35):
One percent?

Speaker 9 (04:39):
A Fox newspanel of Trump voters found the same thing,
with all of them saying they still support him and
that he needs more time to implement his agenda. Corey Jolson,
who's Radio seven forty k TRH.

Speaker 6 (04:49):
That agenda includes tariffs, and those tariffs are already helping
small and mid sized US manufacturers get new business. Jean
Whalen with The Wall Street Journal says they spoke to
several manufacturers.

Speaker 12 (05:01):
They were all saying that they've seen some new interests,
some new orders, and that a lot of that is
coming from other industrial companies in the US wanting to
force things domestically so they don't have to pay import care.

Speaker 6 (05:14):
She says these businesses are cautiously optimistic. Trump met with
new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney yesterday. He rejected becoming
our fifty first state and said Canada wasn't for sale.
The President's response, never say never, Never say never, Trump
adding he's hoping to get a trade deal done with
the Canadians. Markets did like the news that the US

(05:36):
and China will hold trade talks in Geneva this weekend.
Futures are up two hundred and twenty eight points on
the Dow this morning, five to ZHO five. Trump is
literally daring California Governor Gavin Newsom to run for president
in twenty twenty eight, saying he'd lose because of the
botched wildfire response. The Dems are so desperate though, they

(05:56):
could actually run Kamala Harris again.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
This is such great news. Is like Christmas in May.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
But if Kamala Harris is going to run for president again,
she's got to get past some pretty big Democrat heavyweights
in the primary, including JB.

Speaker 6 (06:09):
Pritzker, AOC former Trump advisor Jason Miller. Closer to home,
Saturday's elections were a disappointment for local Republicans who lost
school board races in districts like Katie and Fork Bend.

Speaker 13 (06:22):
One of the biggest reasons for this was low conservative
turnout after twenty twenty four.

Speaker 14 (06:26):
Each time you.

Speaker 15 (06:27):
Have success Conservatives and Republicans now they're ready to get
on with the rest of their life, to get back
to work.

Speaker 13 (06:34):
And do things for Ben County GOP Chairman Bobby Everly
says this is a perfect example of how there's no
political offseason.

Speaker 15 (06:40):
The Democrats will never go away, no matter how many
wins we have. The Democrats are always looking to come back,
and they're always going to have candidates.

Speaker 13 (06:49):
He says, Conservatives need to learn from this and get
better at showing up for down ballot candidates. Ethan Buchanan

Speaker 1 (07:15):
One News Radio seven JTRH.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Bye on wait our time here on Houston's morning News.
So here come the stories. Expect to see some more
of these stories and we'll see if it happens and
at what level it happens. I'm not saying that we
might not see short supplies of some items. We know
that we have one hundred and forty five percent teriff
right now on Chinese goods. Reports are that Chinese ships

(07:41):
are arriving with the first items that are under the tariff,
and that the ships are half full. They're not shipping
as much goods as they did before the tariffs, so
there may be some things coming from China that will
be in shorter supply. The question is what kind of
demand would there be for the men Anyway, here's the

(08:01):
story in the Mirror, a publication called The Mirror that
claims that the Donald Trump trade tariffs so you see
who they're placing this on, likely to start impacting shelves.
Experts have warned Americans, many of whom are currently stockpiling goods,
could be coming sooner than you think. America's shop floors
could soon look a lot emptier with heftier price tags.

(08:23):
Despite Trump shrugging off a looming recession. Who says there's
a looming recession the laught, But I haven't heard anybody
else say there's one that's coming. Goods for shoppers as
supply chain disruptions triggered by the ongoing trade war begin
to hit home. In a detailed breakdown post to X,

(08:45):
this so called expert said the suspension of Chinese trade
around April tenth largely due to new tariffs pushed by
the Trump administration, about to create a serious ripple effect
across America's retail and logistics sectors. According to this gentleman,
it's almost like we're speeding towards a brick wall, but
the driver of the car doesn't see it yet. Hundred
and forty five percent tariff on Chinese goods some categories

(09:07):
taxes high as two hundred and forty five percent. Well,
the tariffs are officially levied on the importers. The added
cost is typically passed on to US consumers in the
form of higher prices. That's the other part of this. Yeah,
one hundred and forty five percent tariff on Chinese goods
for right now, but we don't know how much of
that retailers will actually pass along, doubtful that they will

(09:28):
pass along all one hundred and forty five percent. According
to this same person quoted in the story, takes about
thirty to fifty five days for shipments from China to
reach American ports, depending on the destination. So with trade
effectively halted April the tenth, that means key cities will
start feeling the effect around May tenth. This is May eighth,

(09:49):
so anywhere between now in the next two weeks. So
we'll observe together, right, we'll see if we start seeing
shortages on the shelves and what we start seeing shortages of,
or or if you see a big tick up in
the price of something. Five ten time for traffic and
weather together, is we check in the sky.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Mike, there's gonna be a quiz in the middle of
my soliloquy here, I have the stupidest problems. First of all,
started with my coffee, put it on my pants, made
a ring on my pants.

Speaker 4 (10:15):
Fortunately I carry windex in the truck. Okay, Houston has stupid.

Speaker 5 (10:19):
Problems, just like me. Guess I'm gonna let Terry guests first. Terry,
what do you think happened to the Houston Avenue Bridge
over the KDIE Freeway.

Speaker 4 (10:31):
They caught fire.

Speaker 5 (10:32):
Oh that's a good guess, Jimmy, would you like to
take a guess? What happened to the Houston Avenue Bridge
over the KD Freeway. Why do they have it closed?

Speaker 3 (10:40):
Some sort of a traffic accident. A crash, truck crash,
really close crash. A truck was too tall. This happens
three weeks in Houston.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
I think I'm the winner. Yeah, I ever go another
truck hits the bridge?

Speaker 17 (10:54):
You do?

Speaker 4 (10:54):
So you are.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
Houston Avenue Bridge is closed again because of a too
tall truck.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
It's no big thing. That's not ship bridge short.

Speaker 5 (11:02):
Well, no, the trucks are too tall, terry, and they
don't know how tall they are.

Speaker 4 (11:06):
I know how tall.

Speaker 5 (11:07):
I am not very so Katie Freeways completely open under that.

Speaker 4 (11:12):

Speaker 5 (11:13):

ship once hit six' ten The sherman, bridge not the,
support but the ship was too.

Speaker 4 (11:23):

had we had some storms and we had some, rain
but we didn't have anything we couldn't. Handle what does
it look like?

Speaker 11 (11:48):
Today it kind of looks a little bit, better like
not as much rain and not as big a concern
about those strong. Storms watching the showers and thunderstorms though
along the coast this, morning and it looks like some
of that's going to be making its way up into

(12:10):
the metro this. Morning may dampen some of the roads
during the rush, hour especially the closer to the coast you.
Are it looks like the bulk of the rain is
going to be closer to the coast today rather than
on the north side Of houston like. Yesterday that's where
we had some rough weather. Yesterday forty percent chance of
thundershowers early. TODAY i think they'll taper off by the.

(12:33):

chance of a thunderstorm. Tomorrow friday's, Dry saturday at thirty
percent chance of Submarine sunday's. Dry now by the time

i'm not sure, how But i'm pretty sure that's the.
Case And Mike row is all about skilled labor electricians,
plumbers so mine that college is not for. Everyone he's
putting out a new warning about skilled, labor and it
has to do with what The trump administration is attempting

(13:51):
to do to bring back manufacturing jobs In. America who
will be taking these manufacturing? Jobs gen ze ers are
showing more interest in, it but we have millions of
able body men in this country who are doing. Nothing
what do we do about? That more that story coming up, first,

Video?

Speaker 3 (16:10):
Marco is this he's showing Any can you see his butt?
Crack no you. Can't, okay you can't see his butt. Crack,
well that's not authentic if you can't see his butt.
Cracked all, right we need more people to participate in
the skilled labor. Market younger people are getting involved. Now
we have fewer you, know young people going off to,

(16:32):
college and some of them are going into trade. Schools
that's a good, thing But Mike row, says we're still
going to have a shortage if we don't figure this
thing out. Here he, is first of, all every day
is skilled labor, day or at least it should. Be, secondly,
yeah you can see it in virtually every, number but
the numbers are. Confusing you, know you've got at this,
POINT i think at seven point six million open, jobs

(16:54):
most of them don't require four year degree and the.
Feeling AND i was at that energy conference With Governor
perry a couple of weeks, ago and he's so. Right
this is at the absolute top of mind EVERY ceo
who is there, talking whether IT'S ai or data, centers
that all trickles down to skilled. Labor Gen z got
the memo in some, way shape or, form and you

(17:17):
can see. It the four year degrees are trending down
in that cohort and there's a lot more interest in
electricians and plumbers and steam fitters and welders and pipe
fitters and the stuff my foundation has been focused on
for sixteen.

Speaker 4 (17:30):
Years so, Yes.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
Governor perry pointed, out when we build these data, centers
so massive, investment we need skill willess there's need and
there's criticality like we've always needed, them and people understand
you don't want to wait, three four or five days
for an electrician or. Plumber but what The governor's talking,
about and people really are likening this to a modern
Day Manhattan. Project you've got the maritime industrial base trying

(17:54):
to high one hundred and forty thousand trades people right,
now eighty thousand openings in. Automotive you just go down the.
List and this is the thing that worries me. Too
i'm rooting for the president with the, offshoring the, reshoring
the reinvigoration of. Manufacturing but we got four hundred and
eighty two thousand open jobs in manufacturing right. Now so
you create one point five, million two million new, jobs

(18:16):
you've got to come back to.

Speaker 4 (18:18):
Workforce but you've got.

Speaker 5 (18:19):
Seven million men in their prime who am not working.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
Right so if you really want to peel that, back
his name Is Nick. Everstadt he's an economist and he
wrote a book Called Men Without. Work he would love
to sit here and crunch the data with. You but,
that to me is one of the greatest alarm bells
going on in the. Country we've never seen that, before
not in peacetime. Anyway so these are able bodied men

(18:44):
in their working ages not only not, working but not.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
Looking, yeah not only not, working not looking not. Interested
and that's a phenomenon THAT i have a hard time.
Grasping is it the lack of the work ethic that
most of us were brought up?

Speaker 12 (19:02):
With is?

Speaker 3 (19:04):
It? Yeah if we made it just way too comfortable
for people to not work in other, words you can
make enough money off of social social programs and assistance
in order to be able to make your ends meet
doing a lot of these men still living with their,
parents and their parents, aren't you, know kicking them out

(19:25):
the door telling them to go get a. Job it's
probably a combination of all those. Things five twenty. Seven
time to take a look at your, Money Jeff, Bellinger good,
morning and.

I don't know i don't know what the protocol. Is
On That senator john kennedy making out about how difficult
it is to make a deal, with your enemy primarily

(35:06):
because you. Cannot trust them Here, He is.

Speaker 17 (35:08):
CHINA and When, I say china i'm talking. About their
government china is also in. A bad way their economy as,
weak as rainwater their economy right now looks like somebody
chewed them up and spit them out and. Stepped on
them their unemployment, is way up particularly. Among young people
their property, Market has imploded their debt, is sky high

(35:33):
particularly at.

Speaker 4 (35:33):
The local level.

Speaker 17 (35:39):
They. Just THEIR numbers their gdp. Numbers are inflated The
other point I'd, make about CHINA how can I Put
this trusting china to do anything other than what is
in their best interest is naive and inconsistent with history.

(36:00):
And Common sense the. Chinese government. Cheese they do they
can steal your socks without taking your, Shoes off now But.

Speaker 4 (36:11):
They need america they buy from us.

Speaker 17 (36:15):
Or they sell us about four to five times more than,
we sell them and that's why ultimately we will win in.
A trade war, HAVING said that.

Speaker 4 (36:28):
I hope that.

Speaker 17 (36:30):
The chi Jing ping in china has More sense than
god gave a goose and is willing to step up
and call the president and say let's. Work something out, As,
you know larry you've. Negotiated with Them we admitted China
To The World trade, organization december eleven two. Thousand and

(36:51):
one China started. Cheating december twelve but if we do
to reach a trade. Deal with them we won't, just trust,
them will verify and there is a way to verify
what we're selling them and what. They're selling Us but
the chinese tariffs and, their trade barriers they're just much

(37:15):
more oppressive, than ours are Which Is why president. Trump
elevated ours he's. Got their attention but there's a there's
a way home and this disagreement that will. Benefit Both
Sides but president she is going to have to have to.

Speaker 3 (37:32):
Make a move but as, you just said you, Can't,
trust them senator you. Can't trust them well you say
about stealing their socks without, TAKING their, shoes.

Speaker 4 (37:42):
I mean you.

Speaker 3 (37:42):
Can't trust them so what happens when you verify that
they're still cheating and they're still stealing? Your intellectual property what?

Speaker 13 (37:50):
Do?

Speaker 12 (37:50):
You do?

Speaker 4 (37:50):
Then?

Speaker 3 (37:51):
Stop it stop you all need to. Stop doing that
that's about all that.

Speaker 4 (37:56):
Comes.

Speaker 3 (37:57):
From that now the ultimate answer is to be able
to do as little business As. Possible with, china you
know and and and and do business with countries you
can trust to live up. To their agreements is five.
