Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, TPS is pretty good. De facto amnesty five fifty
three is at that time. Here in Houston's Boring News,
we are joined by Jessica Vaughn, who's with us this
morning from the Center for Immigration Studies. Before we get
into the whole George Sorow's connection here, let's talk a
little bit about TPS. I think I was right right.
The Clint administration is what began Temporary Protective Status.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Good morning. Yes, that is right in nineteen ninety eight,
because there was a hurricane and some destruction in Honduras,
and so Congress created this program TPS to allow the
president to give anyone in the country who could not
(00:45):
go back, whose status was expiring on a visa or
who was in the country illegally, protection from deportation and
a work permit, and status had to be renewed every
eighteen months. Well, that was twenty five five years ago
or so more than that, and those people are still here.
And not only that, they've added many countries and renewed
(01:09):
it constantly for these countries, to the point where we
now have more than half a million people, most of
whom we're here illegally, who've been allowed to stay and
work here all this time. And President Trump has said, look,
this is you know, long past the purpose of this program.
It's time for people to take the savings that they've
(01:31):
accumulated over these years, the education they've gotten here courtesy
of taxpayers, and go back to your home country because
you know, it's been a long time since that hurricane.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yeah, well, if it makes perfect sense, of course you're
going to have the George Sorows and Alex Sorosis of
the world. We're going to fight against this. Do you
think this ultimately ends up in front of the US
Supreme Court.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Probably because the groups like the Sorow's funded groups will
never give up trying to protect these folks that they
want to be able to stay here. But I think
it's pretty clear. The law is clear. Congress gave the
President this authority to give TPS and to take it away,
(02:15):
and so I think this is just a delay tactic
on their part, and they're not going to succeed. But
it's something that really, I mean, I really don't think
we even need TPS anymore. There are other ways that
we can address problems in these other countries. But Congress
clearly intended that this would not be an amnesty. It
(02:37):
says in the law that there is no path to
a Green Carter citizenship for people with TPS, so it's
time to end the program and have our immigration laws
actually mean something.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Yeah, it makes perfect sense to me. Thanks as always, Jessic,
I appreciate it. J just go on Center for Immigration
Studies
