Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, if there's one thing the Catholic Church is very
good at, it is pomping circumstance, and there's gonna be
a lot of that here. Over the next few days.
They'll have a period where they have the pope lying
in state that that's the period that's going on right now.
They will have a funeral for him on Saturday. Then
they will start the papal enclave where they will you know,
(00:21):
the bishops will all meet and they will try to
pick them. Well, they will just no matter how many
ballads it takes, you know, white smoke, black smoke, you
know how that goes, picking the next pope. And then
we find out, you know, once we see who the
next pope is, I guess we find out what direction
or if there will be a directional change with the
Catholic Church. Because this is a very progressive pontiff who
(00:43):
just served. Will they go more conservative going forward? A
joint us to talk about is Jonathan Signs from Texas
Family Values. You have a thought on that, Jonathan, because
this I think, I don't think I'm you know, being
unfair by saying that that may be the most progressive
pope we've ever had. Well a couple things.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
I mean, first of all, as a lifelong Catholic, you know,
you know, seeing a couple of these different changes with
John Paul, Saint John Paul the Second, and of course
Pope Benedict back in twenty thirteen, when right after that,
that is when Pope Francis was voted into this position,
if you will. But I think what's probably notable about
(01:23):
Pope France's first pope from outside of Europe. Know, he's
from South America, from Argentina. Since I think the eighth century,
that generated a lot more interest in that area and
you know, America to some extent as well in the
Catholic Church. Has been a resurgence in the Catholic Church,
more people converting or deciding to become Catholic in an
earlier state in their life. And you know, look, let's
(01:45):
also acknowledge that the Catholic Church is probably the strongest
of not one of these strongest denominations that's consistently been
pro life. I mean, Roe versus Wade was overturned during
the time that Pope Francis was leading the Catholic Church,
and I think that had a lot to do with
pro life Catholics in America. But there were things that
he would say at times I think that would would
(02:08):
confuse people or cause questions. I think it's also notable though,
the impact or the place that the Pope of the
Catholic Church has across the world. You know, President Trump
has ordered flags to be flown in half staff. He
has confirmed to the media that he plans to attend
the funeral on Saturday. And you know, President Vice President
Jady Vance was there on Easter Sunday with Pope Francis,
(02:32):
I guess hours before he passed away.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
And he's a relatively recent convert to Catholicism. I didn't
realize that he is.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
And look, I mean the Trump won the Catholic vote.
I mean, if we want to get into some of
those issues, but there were some you know, first of all,
nothing changed as far as doctrine for the Catholic Church
with Francis his pope. But there were things that he said,
whether it got lost in translation or not, suggested to
people that he might be more progressive. But he can
(02:59):
tell you to say that you know, God made people
male and female, that you know life begins at conception,
that marriages between a man and a woman. He never
you know, none of that changed in the Catholic Church.
I think he just welcomed more conversations on those issues
that gave people concern. And we know that, you know,
they had He and President Trump had differences of opinion
(03:21):
as it related to the border and border security issues.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
But look, I mean a life of service.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
I mean, going back to very young age for Pope Francis,
of life of service certainly a lot of focus on
people that were poor, people that were marginalized, and you
know that's all led by his faith in Jesus Christ.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
I saw a story, I assume this story is true,
that that the Pope was actually one time, well before
obviously he got involved in the church, was a bouncer
at a night club at Argentina. Yeah. I did not
know that either.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
I saw that. You know, people it's you know, these
are real people, right or you never know. I mean,
some of them live a life that's like just so.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Involved in the church.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
But I mean, you know, you think about the country
of Argentina and it's not Europe. I mean, there are
things that are different that are done there. But I
mentioned some of the things that you know, the doctrine
stayed the same. I mean, we're taking a vote in
the Texas Senate today on these issues that relate to
male and female. So, you know, a denomination that is
so well known and goes back to the beginning of
the Christian faith. Continuing to be consistent on some of
(04:29):
these standards is in line with what's going on right
now in our state and our country. And so, you know,
we'll see who's next or you know, the cardinals are meeting.
I think this morning they have their first meeting at
nine am Eastern, and you know, I don't think they're
going to be any rush. I mean, they want to
make sure that they properly honor him. But you know,
(04:51):
I do think that you know, he visited the United
States in twenty fifteen. I was there when he came
out on the speaker's balcony in.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
The the US Capitol.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
I mean, it was a worldwide story.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
And so but you know, we'll see.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
There's there's been some things that have happened during the
time that he was pope that that has upset some
people in the United States, some bishops and cardinals that
have had differences of opinion. But there's no doubt that
you know, the significance and relevance of his time as
a pope, but also that particular position across the world
is much more We're more connected with world news these days,
(05:23):
so you know, I pray for him and his family
and every body that you know across the world that's
reflecting on things now. But there will be some you know,
attention pretty soon about who might be next, and would
it be someone from America, Well.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
That would be a long shot, long shot at bedtime,
probably unlikely. I'm well, I'm well over time here. I
got to run, but thank you, Jonathan. Appreciate Jonathan's signs,
