Speaker 1 (00:00):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
We found out late last week Harris County Judge Lena
Hidalgo wants to raise property taxes. She's proposing a one
cent property tax increase to fund early childhood education that
would add ten bucks per one hundred thousand dollars in
property values. She wants to bring it to the Commissioner's
Court on August seventh for a vote. If it was
approved there, it would go to the voters on the
November ballet. Joining us now to react, State Senator Paul

(00:22):
Bettencourt from Houston Senator, good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Yeah, good morning, Bob.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Is just another smash and grab by Judge Lena Hildago.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
That's a pretty good way to describe it. Tell us,
I mean the legislature, as I understand, it's been working
very hard to actually lower property taxes for for Texas
homeowners property owners.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Right. Well, absolutely, Bob.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Look, I guess my superpowers is every time that she
tries one of these deals.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Because I've got to pass a bill to stop her.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Now, it's not as just as small as ten bucks
per one hundred thousand. She's talking about spending fifty five
million dollars on some type of early childhood education. Now,
First off, the state has spent eight point five billion
dollars into the public school system all the.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Way down to pre k were.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
Then then on top of that, we're putting ten billion
dollars more into property tax relief. But as a leftist,
progressive socialist, Leana thinks of nothing, saying, oh, let's go
throw another you know, fifty million dollars onto the tax
bearers bills. And that's really going to cost the average
home more like about thirty five bucks a year. And

(01:32):
she did it last year, Bob, and we had to
pass the bill of a stopper. She drove a Matt
truck through the disaster code, claimed that Hurricane Burley cost
him a bunch of money. Well, what they did was
smash the taxpayers for four hundred million dollars worth of
excess taxes, and they basically raised everybody's tax.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Bill by three hundred bucks.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
So we're gonna she's doing it again, and I guess fortunately,
you know, Governor Abdus called us in for special session.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Today, so literally today or in the next couple of days.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Well, I'll be filing a bill to knock this back
because it's just it's just constant drum beat from her,
because as a Democrat socialist, all she wants is more
of your money.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
How's she's selling it, Senator, I mean, because what you
just said is pretty alarming. Is there some dearth of
childhood or early childhood education? Is there some study or
something that that would make this even necessary.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
No, this is a pilot program that was federal money
that came through COVID.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Okay, that people you.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Know, like Commissioner's Court, spent it. But the real thing
is you've asked the right question. Hows she selling it?

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Well?

Speaker 3 (02:45):
A year ago she said, oh, the tax increase is
only going to be eight percent. It was fifteen percent,
and the public you know, barely bought it at fifty
one percent forty nine because we had an election in November.
That's what she's talking about now. So Lena lies, Well, gee,
we know she lies. But what's sad about it is

(03:07):
that she lied last time and it cost everybody three
hundred bucks and then we passed a bill House Bill thirty.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
And it stopped her.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
It will stop her from doing that again. But she's
back to the taxpayer well, wanting to figure out some
way to take more of your money. And so it's
time to really raise the stake about this because she
has to.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Get other people on Commissioner's Court.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
To say to do this on August the seventh, and
it's time to just tell Lena just say no.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Well, it's a good thing you are there with your
superpowers of writing bills and stopping her from this because
the people in the people in your district and everybody
else is going to be very very happy if they
don't get taken for another fifty mil. Senator State Senator
Paul bett in Court, best of luck in the special
session today, and thanks for the time, sir.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
Yeah, thanks Bob.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
And every everybody needs to vote for the homestead increases
that we've got on the ballot in November.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Those will lower your tax bill.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Anything that Judge len Hildago does is just going to
raise him. And that's why vote yes on one, vote
no on the other. Well, we'll talk about.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
It more later.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Absolutely look forward to that, thanks sir,
