Speaker 1 (00:00):
Six twenty two. Now you're in Houston's morning news. So
if the governor signs Senate Bill eight, Texas sheriffs may
soon be enforcing federal immigration warrants under a brand new bill.
We're going to bring on a sheriff to tell us
whether or not he supports this or not that he
is Cleveland Terrell County Sheriff. Welcome back to the show, sheriff.
How did Jeff great to be back on? How are
you terrific? Thank you? It's Jimmy. By the way, what
(00:23):
do you think here? Does this create more work for you?
And if so, is this kind of work you want
to take on?
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Well, of course, as you mentioned, you know, I'm down
on the border, so we already do a lot of
border work. But this part of it is really is
expanding our scope of work in the peace of legislations
giving sheriffs three different options to work with. They can
either be part of what's called the jail enforcement model,
the warrant service model, which you have kind of mentioned
(00:52):
and doesn't create really any work other than just issues
of paperwork. And then thirdly one that I don't see
a lot of shrift participating, which is a task force
model where you actually join a task force and go
out and look for the criminal agents.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
You know. Of I'm hearing you say the word paperwork,
and I'm kind of, you know, laughing a little bit
to myself, because I know that in law enforcement, probably
the worst part of your job has got to be
the paperwork. There's so much paperwork involved, you know, even
if you're just pulling somebody over to give them a
citation for something, all the paperwork is involved in doing that.
That probably the last thing you want is more paperwork.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Right Well, Jimmy, let me tell you what since, of course,
I spend twenty six years as a US orbitral agent,
and I'd still be one had our shur if not
passed away out here in Dryld County when I took over.
But I tell you, on the state side, when I
process an alien smuggling mode, man, it's a lot less
paperwork and it takes a lot less time. There's a
(01:50):
lot a lot less of the BIERA credit paperwork. So
actually it's been an easy it's been an easier transition
than you might think.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
At the local level. Well, that's good for sure. So
at the end of the day here, obviously this is
a big help to border patrol and to even bigger
help to ICE when when you can execute these federal
immigration warrants and and help them out with this, certainly
be some alternative, which is when you couldn't do that,
what would happen? You'd either give them dice or just
(02:20):
let them loose. No, no, you're that latter part. Just
let them loose. And and that's a big, big thing.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Why wouldn't you know a local sheriff's officer or other
entity that has somebody in their custoy that's committed to
crime that your legally not want to cooperate what's federal
government and turn those those individuals over. What it may
occur is having somebody in your jail a little more time,
which will you know, again create maybe a bit more
of a you know, having to shell out some money.
(02:47):
But as I understand, there will be some money tied
to this bill for shriff's departments based on you know,
their their city size, so it won't be necessarily one
of those unfunded requirements. And uh again it's gonna be
a good thing. I couldn't see why sherrif wouldn't want
to participate unless you know, they live in a community
that doesn't agree with it, and they want to, you know,
(03:09):
stay in office. But other than that, it's gonna be
a good thing. It really is for for Texas and
for Americans. Nice sir, thank you for your time. Appreciate it.
