Rville Mayor Joe Herring, a search and rescue helicopter, though
had to make an emergency landing after colliding with a
privately owned droll, so officials now want all drones to
be grounded during the search. The left claims that cuts
to the National Weather Service was partly to blame for

(02:20):
the disaster, but even the union representing those forecasters called
it fake news. The forecasters did their job.

Speaker 9 (02:28):
There's very few times when I'll be in a position
that I have to agree with the President of the
United States. The President said they did their job, and
they did.

Speaker 6 (02:36):

the Liberal Associated Press, the National Weather Service office in

Legislature is expected to discuss ways to help prevent tragedies
like this later this month. But unfortunately there's no quick fix.

Speaker 6 (04:07):

recent analysis, current rates or actually drastically inadequate.

Speaker 13 (04:19):
If the coastline gets sit with any type of storm,
they're going to run out of money pretty quick, which
means that they'll be waiting for their properties to be
fixed for a very long time.

Speaker 6 (04:32):
Insurance expert Rouns know For warns that this has been
a problem for over a year now and it could
result in insurance rates being jacked up yet again. Five

a border patrol facility in South Texas. McCallan police Chief
Victor Rodriguez says this was an ambush.

Speaker 14 (04:51):

killed the person that had opened fire upon that building.

Speaker 6 (04:58):
He says, no federal agent where heard. One local cop
was hit in the knee. The gunman was from Michigan.
And there's this. Eleven people are now facing charges after
an ambush had an ice facility back on July fourth.
One officer was shot in the neck. Butt is expected

(05:45):
Ustonians are paying an average of two dollars and seventy
four cents for regular unlitted gas. That is thirty five

dozens more are still missing. I'm Cliff Saunders on Houston's news,
weather and traffic station news Radio seven RH.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
This is Houston's Morning News with Jimmy Barrett.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
That's because you haven't made your first payment yet. Five
oh wait is our time here in Houston's worn News.
We'll get to the latest on the Hill Country flood
and clean up efforts and recovery efforts and all those
kinds of things. We'll keep informed all morning long. But
first time wanted to bring this up because we've talked
about this on the show before. I feel like I
feel like the town crier warning trying to warn people

(07:34):
against doing this. But I get it. You know a
lot of us feel like we don't have a choice.
I don't know, you know, how old your car is
how long you've had your car last time you bought
a new car. But we have done something. We've crossed
the threshold. As far as car payments go, we have
a record number of people who have extremely long car

(07:58):
loans and have monthly payments that are almost as much
as their mortgage payment. We have a record number of
one thousand dollars a month or more car payments in
the second quarter this year. This comes from Edmunds dot Com.
A share of new vehicle buyers who compremitted to monthly
payment of one thousand dollars or more hid at all
time high nineteen point three percent, So nearly one out

(08:22):
of five people who are buying a car have a
car payment of one thousand dollars a month or more.
That's up from seventeen point eight percent a year ago.
The average monthly payment is now seven hundred and fifty
six dollars a month, that is up sixteen dollars from
a year ago. Car buyers are also taking on longer
loan terms in order to achieve the payment. In the
second quarter, twenty two point four percent of new vehicle

(08:44):
financing were of loans eighty four months or longer eighty
four months are longer that almost a quarter of all loans.
That's a new record. In the second quarter last year,
eighty four month loans accounted for seventeen point six percent
of new car financing. We are taking a longer to
pay it off. We're making a higher payment. I mean,

(09:05):
it's one thing if you are making a higher payment,
if you're paying more than what your car loan payment
is supposed to be, because you're trying to pay that
off early. I'm doing that with the truck. You know,
I basically financed it for thirty six months, but I'm
doubling down on the payment so I can get the
car the loan done in half the time. That's the
plan anyway. The average amount financed, not how much it costs,

(09:27):
because people are also putting more money down in order
to try to get the payment something they can live with.
The average amount finance for a new vehicle is up
to forty two three hundred and eighty eight dollars, again
at all time high. That's up from forty eight hundred
and seventy three dollars a year ago. Averaging new car
loan sixty nine point eight months, average annual interest rate
seven point two percent. Wow, that's up from sixty nine

(09:51):
months and seven point three percent a year ago. You
remember your first car payment, your first new car. In
your first car payment, you were think back on that
because mine was less than one hundred dollars a month,
five to ten time for traffic and weather.

Speaker 6 (10:07):
It's together the most expensive vehicle I've.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Ever wrote, is that right? Yeah? All the insurance, Well
that doesn't even include the insurance of what we're talking about. Yeah, yeah,
that too. It Wow, let's.

Speaker 6 (10:18):
Figure out itenees.

Speaker 5 (10:20):
That looked like some kind of overnight work that they
just picked up at the last minute. We had some
leftovers there right in front of Shipley Valley that was on.

Speaker 6 (10:27):
The inbound And we're looking good.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
There's a little slight scooch and that will be gone
by the time you get there from Lynchburg Crosby. And
we're looking good on this side here, let's hit the
Katie Freeway side.

Speaker 6 (10:38):
So far, they did some pavement repair.

Speaker 5 (10:40):
Boy, yesterday, I learned this the hard way yesterday, guestner
at iten whenever they have a problem there because of
Memorial City, because of all the hospitals right there, man,
that is a terrible place to have signal problems. It
looks to me like that's good, But you tell me
what's going on because I can't see under the freeway
there seven one three two one two t ips mainline

Speaker 3 (11:19):
Terry Smith is with us. She has the forecast for today.
It'll look familiar because it's pretty much the same forecast
we had yesterday.

Speaker 6 (11:25):
Just about just about.

Speaker 18 (11:28):
Yeah, we are dealing with the rain most of the week.
We may get a little bit of a break briefly
bye Friday.

Speaker 6 (11:37):
We'll see how that pans out.

Speaker 18 (11:38):
But showers and thunderstorms today, and some of those storms
could produce some heavy rain in short periods of time.

Speaker 6 (11:45):
We're going to be keeping an eye on.

Speaker 18 (11:47):
It's an inch or two of rain in a short
period of time, that's possible. Seventy percent chance that you're
going to get wet today and temperatures load to mid nineties,
sixty percent chance at thunderstorm tomorrow, a forty percent chance
of more rain Thursday, load to mid nineties.

Speaker 6 (12:05):
We'll get a little bit of a break right now.

Speaker 18 (12:06):
It looks like Friday's only a twenty percent chance of
a thundershower, but the rain returns by Saturday.

Morning News Team all the info you need to take
on the day.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
The left collectively, I think has lost its mind. This
only thing I can come up with at this point.
It's not it's it's the things they're saying are no
longer just to politicize something. They are based on insanity.
Rosie o'donald's a perfect example of that. You know, you

(12:50):
know who she's blaming the Texas Flood's on right, of course,
Donald Trump. We'll have more on the blame game from
the left as it relates to our flooding here in
Texas and reaction to that coming up next first though,
at five.

Speaker 6 (13:03):
Plenty deatric clinic that's hiring this morning.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
Is that right, sky Mate?

Speaker 5 (13:07):
You know that story, it's went viral. Let's go which
way you want to go. Let's go southwest, Jimmy I
sixty nine Southwest Freeway coming up from Great Wood. We're
in good shape here over the Brass River outbound. Of course,
we did that lane shift over the bridge, and that's
that's going to be some weekends. That's going to be
some tough stuff getting outbound. For now, we look good.
Twenty one minutes into downtown. Rest of your freeways, Rock,

shower storm tomorrow and then a forty percent chance on Thursday.

top stories in our newsroom. Here's clipp Thank you, Jimmy.

now is in day five. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton

and the newly acquired Kevin Durant will wear number seven

(14:25):
I live in southeast Houston.

Speaker 3 (14:26):
Your forecast is at the bottom of the hour on
seven forty KTRH. You know, I know John Mayer has
been with a lot of chicks, but you don't think this, No, not,
Rosie o'donald. Five twenty two is our time here on
Houston's morning news. All right, Rosie o'donald leaves this off.
It's the left doing what the left does, blaming the

(14:47):
Texas flooding on Donald Trump, which is what they're trying
to do, and cuts at the National Weather Service that
haven't happened yet, and all those other things. So here
is what they have to say and some reaction to it.
On the five when.

Speaker 19 (15:02):
The president cuts all of the early warning systems and
the weathering forecast abilities the government. These are the results
that we're going to start to see on a daily basis.

Speaker 5 (15:15):
The incident comes as the Trump administration is making deep
cuts to weather forecasting services.

Speaker 6 (15:23):
We're also learning that there were significant staffing shortfalls the
National Weather Services offices in the region.

Speaker 20 (15:28):
I don't think it's helpful to have missing key personnel
from the National Weather Service not in place to help
prevent these tragedies.

Speaker 21 (15:37):
At the White House, correcting the record, the National.

Speaker 22 (15:40):
Weather Service provided early and consistent warnings. They gave out
timely flash flood alerts. There were record breaking lead times
and the lead up to this catastrophe, there is ongoing
flood monitoring and these offices were well staffed. In fact,
one of the offices was actually overstaffed.

Speaker 23 (15:58):
These people have emotional problems and bad religion. Let me
give you an example, Jessica, and it's good to be
back around the table. This climate change thing is a
religion to these people because they believe that weather is
punishing us for being a rich and successful and prosperous nation.
And all they need to do to appease the rain
gods is to have everybody use their sacred things like

(16:21):
solar panels and supid cars and windmills, and that's what's
going to save.

Speaker 6 (16:27):
Lives, all right.

Speaker 23 (16:28):
And then you have people that blame everything on Donald Trump.
So if they get fired, if they stub their toe,
if there's a virus, it's his fall. And so you're
walking around and dealing with people that are like suspicious pagans.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
All right, everything they see they.

Speaker 6 (16:42):
See as a conspiracy. They're superstitious.

Speaker 23 (16:44):
But we're not in this anymore. We used to have
to battle these people. We are in an age of common.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
Sense, well not completely in an age of common sense,
because only about maybe half of us have it. About
fourth of us I think are incapable of achieving common sense.
And then there's the other fourth I think that I
guess with enough training that maybe they could acquire more

(17:10):
common sense, but common sense. We tell you a couple
of things. First of all, the National Weather Service itself
has come out and said we had twenty six people
on staff. We were overstaffed compared to what we normally are.
We were overstaffed. Staffing was not an issue for this
event like anything else. You know, if you're short personnel,

(17:33):
just like if you're short at the air traffic control
tower of the personnel, then you guess what you have.
Some people are working over time and shifts that overlap
one another with whatever takes in order to get the
job done. And the National Weather Service is just like that.
Any cuts coming to the National Weather Service is we've
already discussed, do not take effect until October, and they're
on the periphery. They're not They're not the personnel who

(17:56):
are out there forecasting the weather. So to make the
blames to blame this is like blaming the weather on
climate change. This is not the first time that we've
had this happen here in Texas. This is not the
first time that this has happened on the Guadeloupe River.
This is not the last time these things will happen.

(18:19):
It's part of the risk of living where we live.
Where we live, we get hurricanes, where we live, we
get tornadoes, where we live, we get floods. Doesn't mean
we shouldn't try to find ways to mitigate these things
and to warn people about these things. But you can't
prevent mother nature from doing what mother nature does. Mother

(18:41):
nature is all powerful. These things happen, and they will
happen again. Five six. It's time to take a look
at your money as we check in with who's in
this morning? Are you in this morning?

Speaker 6 (18:53):
Jeff, Yes, I am.

Speaker 24 (18:55):
Jimmy good enough, see you, Thank you, sir. This report
is sponsor by Fidelity. The sentiment among the nation's small
business owners with slightly more bearish last month than it
was in May. The optimism index from the National Federation
of Independent Business ticked down two tens percent. About a
fifth of the business owner's surveyed said taxes were their
biggest issue, and since then President Trumps signed off on

(19:17):
his fiscal package that includes tax cuts. The days of
going through airport security without your shoes are reportedly about
to end. Sources say a Transportation Security Administration policy will
change and allow travelers to keep their shoes on. It
will likely speed up the screening process. Critics have long
contended the shoe rule, enacted in the post nine eleven

(19:39):
titaning of airport security is more security theater than actual
security enhancement. I'm Jeff Bellinger, Bloomberg Business on News Radio

seven forty KTRH. It's time now for the news. Here's
Cliff Saunders.

Speaker 6 (21:30):
Hey you, Jimmy five thirty one on KTRH. Our top story.

Speaker 27 (21:33):
Nobody saw this coming. We don't this sudden happen here,
you know. Sadly we don't get much rains, and when
we do, yeah, sluds.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
Put it not like this.

Speaker 6 (21:41):
Ill Country residents are still in shock after the flooding
that has now claimed more than one hundred lives, including
nearly thirty kids. Dozens remain unaccounted for. But we're starting
to hear more stories of heroism as well, people making
the ultimate sacrifice.

Speaker 28 (21:56):
The camp director who lost her life shaving I think
five of those little kids. Nick Eastland, he died trying
to save three little girls at you know, four, five,
six in the morning, when when those floods were running
through there.

Speaker 6 (22:08):
Texas Congressmanship Roy with Klay Travis and Buck Sexton right
here on KTRH. The left turning this into a political
issue and it has backfired on them. A Houston pediatrician,
doctor Christina Propst, fired from her job after posting that quote.
Kerk County MAGA voted to gut FEMA. They deny climate change.

(22:30):
May they get what they voted for. This marked a
shift from the way the left acted back in twenty
seventeen when Houston was going through Harvey.

Speaker 29 (22:39):
To say, it means you have to be thinking at
and I would even think that on any level. And
I remember grade Harvey, nobody sat there and cared whether
you were a Republican or Democrat. All they knew is
you're in trouble, you need help.

Speaker 6 (22:49):
We're going to help Houston. Former Houston City Councilman Greg
Travis says the tragedy shouldn't be used to score political points.
There's growing pressure on Texas Governor Greg Abbott to ad
the flooding. During a special session of the state legislature
on July twenty first, one idea revisit a bill that
would improve communications between police and firefighters.

Speaker 30 (23:10):
Ensure that each and every first responder that has put
in their lives on the line have the tools they
need to properly communicate with those around them.

Speaker 6 (23:19):
State Representative Ken King also included the use of outdoor
warning signs in the development of a new emergency alert system.
The safety of our seller camps in the Hill Country
is also under the microscope now.

Speaker 31 (23:32):
Camp Mystic, which was destroyed in this weekend's floods, just
one of many summer camps that dot the Texas Hill Country.
They're each having to take a good hard look at
their own safety plans.

Speaker 32 (23:42):
Can we prevent this or what can be done to
prevent this next time? And these are really hard questions.

Speaker 31 (23:47):
John McDonald heads the TBRM camp in the Bronfels. He says,
like everybody they're grieving, they're leaning into their Christian faith,
saying there is a spiritual connection between the camps and
he encouraged all parents to ask the hard questions about safety,
conversations he says.

Speaker 6 (24:01):
Bring the community closer.

Speaker 31 (24:03):
Michael Board News Radio seven forty KTRH, Thank you, Michael.

Speaker 6 (24:06):
The Astros donated a million dollars to relief efforts. The
Rockets and Texans also announced donations, and in a few
minutes Jimmy will tell you what Texans great JJ Watt
did for a Kurvel restaurant. If you want to help,
we have a way for you to do that as well.
We linked up to the Community Foundation of the Texas
Hill Country at KTRH dot com, on our Facebook page

(24:27):
and on x five point thirty four on KTRH. The
DOJ releases a memo concluding that the alleged sex offender
Jeffrey Epstein, did not have a client list and did
commit suicide in federal prison back in twenty nineteen.

Speaker 22 (24:44):
They committed to an exhausted investigation. That's what they did,
and they provided the results of that.

Speaker 6 (24:50):
White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt praised the memo and
the Trump administration's commitment to government transparency. Some new numbers
from the liberal Pew re Research Center showing that President
Trump's win in November was even bigger than we thought.
As Matt Kittle says from the Federalist, the numbers could
spell doom for the Dems.

Speaker 33 (25:10):
What we're seeing in the Democratic Party of dissarray is
great news for Republicans, those bad news for the country.
Look what happened in New York City recently. We are
doubling down on very unpopular far left radical policies.

Speaker 6 (25:24):
Kittle says. The majority of Americans don't support those policies,
especially minorities. The President is giving a break to our
trading partners when it comes to tariffs, but only for
a few weeks.

Speaker 34 (25:37):
A pause on tariffs announce it back in April was
set to expire tomorrow, but they won't be collected until
August first. President Trump has started sending out letters to
more than a dozen trading partners notifying them of new
tariff rights on imports, among them major trading partners Japan
and South Korea, who are both facing twenty five percent
tariffs on products sold in the US.

Speaker 6 (26:00):
Thank you, Jared Halpern. Futures trading this morning is mixed.
Dow futures are down sixty six after losses across the
board on Wall Street yesterday, led by a four hundred
and twenty two point drop on the down Now. One
trick home buyers used a couple of years ago was
to buy a home with a high mortgage interest rate
and then I hope to refinance when rates came back down.

(26:22):
They haven't, so now those high interest rate buyers are
thinking about either selling or other options.

Speaker 35 (26:28):
If I can't refinance anytime soon, I'm going to stay
in my home and Bill tim Ethwide.

Speaker 6 (26:34):
Houston real estate expert Kenya Barrell van Warmer says people
have choices, but the days of low interest rates like
some are used to are pretty much over. Five point
thirty sixty Astros lose at Home to Cleveland seven to six.
The series continues tonight pregame seven to five. Excuse me,
pregame at six tonight on Sports Talk seven ninety, Game

(26:57):
over Seattle in the al West now at six and
night half games recapping our top story, The Hill Country
death toll rises to over one hundred, including nearly thirty kids.
Today is day five of the search for victims. I'm
Cliff Saunders on Houston's News Weather in traffic station news
radio seven forty kg RH.

Speaker 2 (27:16):
Be Informed be on time. Houston's Morning News continues.

Speaker 1 (27:22):
With Jimmy Verrett.

Speaker 3 (27:24):
Oh we know Ive thirty seven is our time here
on Houston's Morning News. I'd like to because the rest
of it is just so heartbreaking that I can only
do so much before it depresses me. I can only
imagine how depressing it is for everybody. You know, what

(27:45):
has happened in the Hill Country. I mean, it's our
job to report it. We need to get you the information.
But I hope you'll forgive me if I look for
some of the some of the bright side, or some
of the some of the good news stories inevitably come
from these horrible, tragic events, and this is one of them.

(28:06):
It is always amazing to me. You can tell a
lot about a person just kind of based on their
bond with whatever area that they have called home for
a period of time. JJ Watt does not live in Houston.
He and his wife no longer live here, but his
heart is still here in many different ways, and he

(28:28):
obviously follows the news and he is very well aware
of the flooding of what has happened. He was also
aware of a Cerville restaurant that has been feeding first
responders and just about anybody else in the community that's
been ravaged by this deadly destructive flooding, and they've been
basically doing it for free. So he decided he wanted

(28:49):
to make a donation. He knew they had to go
fundme page, but I think he wanted to talk directly
to the restaurant rather than just going to go fundme
page and make sure that they got the money directly.

Speaker 1 (28:59):
So called.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
Also the restaurant evidently, and whoever answered the phone evidently
didn't know who it was. Well, he knew it was
a guy named JJ, but they had no idea who
JJ was. And he told the boss, Hey, there's a
guy named JJ. He's on the phone. He wants to
make a donation. The owner said that, you know, he

(29:20):
didn't based on that. He he just get his number
and uh, you know, I'll call him back, and he
calls it back as JJ Watt. He had he had
no idea. But how generous is that? I mean help,
I mean, what a great donation to make. You're helping
a restaurant continue to feed people in need who are

(29:41):
there working to help the community. I just can't think
of a better, better way to spend one hundred if
you have one hundred, you know, granted most of us
don't have one hundred thousand dollars to donate that way,
but if you have that that kind of money, I mean,
what what a great way to target that money for
something that is an immediate need of the community. It's
also nice to see the Houston Astros commit a million

(30:02):
dollars to recover efforts for the flooding. The Texans have
kicked in. There are a lot of organizations and I'm
sure there are a lot of Fortune five hundred companies
here in the Greater Houston area that will also kick in.
We always help each other out when it comes to
this stuff, and I do want to remind you that
we still have the donation link on our page at
KTRH dot com for the Community Foundation of the Texas

(30:22):
Hill Countries the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund. Those monies
will be used specifically to help people affected in hunt Ingram, Kerrville, Centerpoint,
and comfort along the Guadalupe River. The relief funds are
being directed to vetted local organizations involved in rescue, relief,
and recovery efforts, so you know the money will go
to the right places. Again. You can get the link

(30:44):
at KTRH dot com. Five forty time for traffic and
weather together. What's guy, Mike.

Speaker 6 (30:48):
JJ Watt's wife just had a baby a couple of
weeks ago.

Speaker 3 (30:51):
Now the boy didn't I Nico Benjamin Why?

Speaker 5 (30:53):
We don't know as hyde or weight, but we know
the college scouts will be there shortly.

Speaker 3 (30:57):
Yeah, no kidding and his brother by the way, cute
kid looks like his daddy.

Speaker 6 (31:00):
Oh congratulations, what family. We love y'all. Let's go.

Speaker 5 (31:04):
You know what I'm forgetting Now, I've got to check
the free iHeartRadio app. It's super easy to get downloaded.
It's free, and then you can talk to us on
the talkback.

Speaker 6 (31:13):
Mike, Let's do.

Speaker 36 (31:13):
One sky Mike Kevin from Texas City. I forty five
Golf Freeway southbound, just north of the six ten split
at exit forty the stall second right lane that hasn't
stopped a whole lot of traffic yet, but it might
get a little love here.

Speaker 5 (31:31):
Outstanding job Kevin from Texas City. There it is Golf
Freeway outbound at six y ten. Let me let the
pretty ladies on TV know about that. There's some some
of the onlines are showing a closure on two ninety
that's not there between the Belt and Loop that's wide
open and Grant Parkway to the West Loop sixty ten
right now looking good. Rest of your freeways rotten two
four now right back in ten with this, I'm Skymike

(31:53):
and your Generator Supercenter dot Com Traffic Center.

Speaker 3 (31:55):
From r KTRH Generator super Center twenty four hour web
Center time check inventory Smith. We have more storm chances today, yes,
and tomorrow. Yes. Do we get a break on Friday?

Speaker 18 (32:08):
I think we'll see a little bit less rain Friday.

Speaker 6 (32:12):
Yeah, a little bit of a break.

Speaker 3 (32:14):
When's the next time you think you're going to have
a forecast with the day in it that has a
zero percent chance of rain.

Speaker 6 (32:20):
I'll have to go find it. Not anytime soon, No,
I don't think so.

Speaker 3 (32:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 18 (32:26):
So it's an interesting setup for us today and tomorrow.
That's when we're most likely to get the rain because
we have this little disturbance that's hanging around and obviously
just a boatload of humiditated deal with. So showers and
thunderstorms are very likely today for a good bit of
US seventy percent chance, So you're going to get wet today.

(32:49):
At some point some of us may get some heavy rain,
some brief heavy rain out of these thunderstorms. Temperature is
load of mid nineties today. Tomorrow it's a sixty percent
ant of showers and storms, and then a forty percent
chance of moreen Thursday.

Speaker 6 (33:05):
Friday will get a little bit of a break.

Speaker 18 (33:07):
I think, like a twenty percent chance of a thutter shower,
so I think most of us will get through that
day dry. We'll see, and then a fifty percent chance
of more thunder store of Saturday.

Speaker 3 (33:16):
Okay, right now, seventy nine at your official severe weather station,
News Radio seven forty KTRH.

Speaker 1 (33:22):

Speaker 2 (33:25):
This is Houston's Morning News, brought to you by New
South Windows Solutions.

Speaker 3 (33:31):
Just about five fifties our time here in Houston's Morning News.
I'm trying very hard to not cry this morning. I'm
never very comfortable would I do it? Although I find
if you found this, the older I get, the more
inclined I am to cry, and sometimes not over things
that are particularly sad, but just things that are touching

(33:54):
or emotional. And I have to admit I didn't think
that Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick could make me cry, but
he did last night. I'll share some audio with you
from his appearance on Laura Ingram coming up next. First though,
A five fifty little Patrick. Yeah. Can you believe that? Yeah?

Speaker 5 (34:08):
Gosh, he hasn't made me cry since he was on
Channel eleven talking about the oilers. Ah, let's go, yeah,
let's go to the south side.

Speaker 6 (34:16):
Here, I got some golf freeway. I'm gonna go fast here.

Speaker 5 (34:18):

Speaker 12 (34:25):

vehicle smack dab in the center lane.

Speaker 38 (34:34):

Speaker 5 (34:35):
All right, I'm hearing a lot about this. We did

super neuper careful if you're passing home depot right now.

Speaker 1 (34:43):
This is outbound, not inbound.

Speaker 5 (34:44):

(35:08):
of our top stories this morning. Here's Cliff, Thank you, Jimmy.

Speaker 6 (35:11):
The death toll in the Hill Country flood tragedy is
now over one hundred. A teenager and two children are
flown to the hospital after an ATV crash in Crosby,
and the Lamark City manager has resigned over questions about
his employment applications, specifically his military and educational background. At

Speaker 2 (35:38):
Reliable KTRH traffic and weather next on the ten.

Speaker 3 (35:45):
Five point fifty two our time here in Houston's morning News.
Yeah it's not. I mean, Lieutenant Governor Dan Pafick didn't
so much make me cry as the story he told,
you know, brought tears to my eyes. I mean, I'm
not talking about Sobin here, talking about you know, you know,
that little moment where you're going to have to wipe
your eyes. He was on with Laura Ingram last night
talking about the flood and some of the stories.

Speaker 4 (36:06):
When you do search, what you're doing is phase one,
a quick search, if they tried to find everyone alive
that they could find. And now we're in the second phase,
still searching for life, but they're going back over the
same area as they already search, but with a new searcher,
so you have fresh eyes on it to go back
and look in detail. As the water has gone down
so far, you know, there's new trees, new bushes, new rocks.

(36:29):
You see, and you can see where you couldn't see
under the water before. So we're I met with the
families today. There are about twenty families that I met with,
and I told them I gave him my cell number.
I said, you call me. I said, I'm not going
to leave you. I'm not going to abandon you. I've
got eight grand kids. I'm going to look at your
kids like I look at my kids and Greg Gabbott
myself in the entire state of Texas. We're not going

(36:50):
to leave until we find your child.

Speaker 38 (36:54):
Dan.

Speaker 21 (36:55):
I know you met with so many family members and
you had mentioned that that one family lost five members.

Speaker 1 (37:03):
Is that right?

Speaker 6 (37:03):
Could you share some of what you heard in the song.

Speaker 4 (37:06):
Yeah. Yeah, So one family lost five members. They've recovered
two of the bodies, their mother, their father, their sisters,
so and so they said, please find the other three
for me. Please fan find the other three, and I said.

Speaker 1 (37:23):
We're going to do it.

Speaker 4 (37:24):
There are two other families far that I'm aware of,
the soccer coach at the high school, and that was
a family of four or five. And there was another
family that I'm aware of of five that have been lost.
This is entire families wiped out, and of course the
children and the adults that have been that had been lost.

Speaker 3 (37:44):
But we're still searching.

Speaker 1 (37:46):
We still believe in life.

Speaker 4 (37:47):
We know the hours are getting longer each day, but
we're going to return all of these, all of their loved.

Speaker 6 (37:53):
Ones to the families.

Speaker 4 (37:54):
I went out to the Camp Maybury not Camp Maybury
Camp mystics can't missed it, forgive me, can't missed it
today and it was it was just heartbreaking, Laura and
inspiring at the same time. I talked with you know,
his father and the mother and their children run the camp.

(38:16):
And of course you know the father, they lost him
in the flood when he got in his truck and
tried to save a couple of kids. And it's the
last time his family saw him. But the one son
was telling me as he walked me through these stories.
They went cabin to cabin, and they left one cabin
getting the girls out as the water was rising. And
he said, within three minutes, we went from ankle to deep,

(38:36):
knee deep to neck deep, and the next thing we
were floating away, being driven down by the river. All
of these girls and myself probably one hundred yards and
we walked down there and they all went into the
trees and they were saved by the trees. And when
the water receded, they then walked up with no shoes
on in the cold. The mud is cold, the water
was cold. And they walked probably the one hundred yards

(38:57):
back to a building that's eighty six years old, looks
a little decrepit.

Speaker 3 (39:01):
It's been there a long time.

Speaker 4 (39:03):
And they were on the second floor and the water
rose to the second floor.

Speaker 6 (39:08):
Laura the second floor, and.

Speaker 4 (39:11):
A couple of hundred girls watched it, and they sang
Christian songs and that water stopped, and those children persuaded.

Speaker 3 (39:22):
It's tough to hear, tough to listen to him. But
that's what's all about. Five poin fifty six. Now here

Time here in. Houston's morning, news all right wind and
hail and floods and, hurricanes and, tornadoes and yeah we
get it All. Here in texas Rons NOW for joins us,
property INSURANCE expert and i hate to put you on, The,
spot HERE ron but i think that one of the things,
that will, be you. KNOW very sad i think for
probably a lot of Folks In the hill country is
they're probably are a fair amount of People In the

(54:29):
hill country that don't. Have flood insurance.

Speaker 44 (54:33):
That's very true most of them are going TO deal
with fema and that's going to take them a long time.
To get paid and or there's a cap of two
hundred and fifty thousand dollars ON. Limits for fema.

Speaker 3 (54:47):
The other thing is even the ones that think to.
Get flood insurance flood insurance has gotten to be cost
prohibitive for a. Lot of, people you know we have
A place in freeport that we have. Flood insurance on
it's over three thousand dollars a year just for. The
flood insurance.

Speaker 44 (55:02):
You're one of. The fortunate ones i'm hearing some really
ridiculous stuff down along the coastline that people are opting
to completely.

Speaker 3 (55:11):
Not have insurance now that seems to be a. Recipe
for disaster would you agree to be completely uninsured unless
you own that place free and clear and have a
whole bunch of money? To rebuild it does does it
make sense not? To carry insurance it doesn't.

Speaker 44 (55:27):
Make any, sense you, know right now whether. It's so
unpredictable the stuff that happened over the weekend was not
expected to do anywhere near, what it did and we
had once in a generation type flooding There in the
guadalupe and people will never be the same.

Speaker 3 (55:50):
Because of it SO here's WHAT i guess i have
to wonder about all this is where do you think
property insurance? Rates are going we have seen them go
very high here over the course of the last five,
or six years they seem to be continuing to head.
In That direction and i'm guessing events like what just
Happened In The hill country i'm not going. TO help

(56:11):
that i assume that the entire state insurance rates are
probably going to go up as a result. Of, that event.

Speaker 44 (56:18):
Well that will be. Part of it but you have
to remember that the cost of construction has gone up
astronomically in the. Last five Years here. In texas alone
we've seen, Labor costs increase we've seen. Material costs increase
all that goes into what your costs. For insurance is
it's based on what the cost to replace your home

(56:41):
or your property. And so forth so as those prices keep,
continuing to rise the price for insurance will. Continue to rise.

Speaker 3 (56:50):
So when you're trying to make, an insurance decision you're
a family and you're trying to make, an insurance decision
and you can't afford. To get everything you can't afford to,
get flood insurance plus, WINDED hail insurance. Us property insurance
we have all three on Our, place in freeport and
we're talking about well over seven thousand. Dollars a year
some people are not gonna be able to afford. To
do that how do you go about picking what the

(57:10):
most important thing Is to ensure.

Speaker 44 (57:15):
That's. A great question you really have to be strategic
in what you have, available to you and you should
try and get some, type of coverage even if it's
catastrophic where your deductible. Is extremely, high that way at
least if you do have a hurricane that comes in
to wipes, out the building you're going to get the
majority of it paid. Back to you you can increase

(57:37):
your deductible from one percent to two, or three percent
and that'll take care of. The catastrophic loss the smaller
claims you're going to be out of pocket on and
be paying. For, those yourself.

Speaker 3 (57:49):
Yeah do you see anything that's going to improve, the
landscape though as. First insurance costs.

Speaker 44 (57:56):
Hopefully in the, next legislative session which is a year
and a half, away from now we'll have something that
has done because insurance companies are still making astronomical Profits,
here in texas and somebody should step in and try
and wane in some.

Speaker 43 (58:16):
Of those.

Speaker 1 (58:17):
Profits you know.

Speaker 3 (58:18):
The only thing that concerns, Me about that and let
me get a quick thought from you on that is
That places like california, have done that and, as a
result some insurers no longer Do. Business in california if
you take the pool and you make it smaller of,
available insurance companies seems like that would naturally drive the price. Of,
insurance up.

Speaker 44 (58:37):
Well even if we shave off a little bit of
margin on what, they're making now they're still making more
money than just about any other state. In the country
and The stuff in california had to do. With the
wildfires they told them for years that they needed to
have better preparedness on water and fire departments, and so

(58:58):
forth and insurance the state said they wouldn't do. Anything
about it and each year the Insurance companies in california
told them we need, to increase price we need, to
increase prices and eventually they told them that they weren't.

Speaker 3 (59:12):

the little, girls that died there there's adults that died
and they were still somebody's son or daughter, or mother or,
father and you know not to think in those terms,

little disturbance that's Out there in the, gulf heading our
way we're going to see more clouds and, increase in
the rain. The showers and thunderstorms they could start to pop,
up LATE this morning but i really think the bulk

(01:48:21):
of the rain. Is in the afternoon, but here's the
thing having rain possibility with, some of, these storms you
know these isolated downpours that we often see, in the summer.

(01:49:18):
down to it tom how Do? You prepare for harvey
what could? We have done differently what have We done
differently since harvey to prepare for a repeat if, That should. Ever, Happen,
god forbid well jamie thank.

Speaker 38 (01:49:29):
You for having me this, is a important topic not
only considering, what happened last week the tragedy.

Speaker 6 (01:49:36):
That happened last week But.

Speaker 38 (01:49:38):
We STILL remember harvey but i can tell you, every
storm Is. DIFFERENT whether it's elisha I remember the night
alisha came about three. O'CLOCK in the morning i thought
it was going to all be. Over at that point
that was, in The, early eighties Then, allison Then Tax,
day THEN memorial day then I, and then finally harvey

(01:49:59):
and and, every storm is different but there's certain things you.
Gotta do preparation wise i'm Not SAYING THIS, because i'm
o ktrh but get your radio tuned in because one
of the biggest problems we have in a storm event
we saw this this past week, is people, getting information
getting alerts knowing what's happening because you don't know where

(01:50:23):
the rain is, going to fall necessarily and being aware
that the storm has moved Like. It did in harvey
IT came over the uh the areas to the NORTH
and WEST of us and uh they just dumped, thirty
inches of rain but it all fell at the at the,
at the right, time as it were and and certain

(01:50:47):
areas were flooded. While Other Areas weren't tropical storm allison
WAS an equally damaging uh and that was just a
tropical Storm that went to. Lufkin and came back so
people have. Got to pay attention and, we IN the
county and i know that my other colleagues, and the other.

(01:51:08):
Precincts but we prepare i've got over two hundred and
fifty people. That are on alert when we get noticed
that a, storm may be hitting so they put assets in.
Different areas and locate we know the areas that are likely,
to flood an event we respond.

Speaker 3 (01:51:28):
And GET there well and i know some of the
first responders have gotten new equipment to help. With a
flooding situation we just weren't used to. That LEVEL of
flooding but i know a lot of the fire departments
now have boats and other things that they can do
out to help. With high water rescues exactly.

Speaker 38 (01:51:45):
That we have added we had equipment every year and you.
Learn from every storm and when you consider probably the
worst storm that in history is a. Storm of nineteen hundred, so,
when they say well this, is a recent. Phenomenon, Of
course not no we've Been having storms in texas in
this area for well over one hundred years that that we. Can,

(01:52:10):
we can document well it's.

Speaker 3 (01:52:11):
It's part of it's part. Of where we, live and,
it's uh you know we we knew that. Before we
built here so we just we did we live? In,
a plot, line yeah. We did we do always good, to,
Talk to you sir thank. You for Your Time That
Is Harris. County commissioner tom ramsey y'all. Have a great day,
we'll see tomorrow morning BRIGHT. And early five am hope
