Speaker 1 (00:00):
Okay, let's go back to that special session. A lot
of emergency issued issue I'm sorry, emergency warning issue events
as a part of the agenda set forth by Governor
Abbot in the special session. Trenton Rippy joins us not
analyze from young Americans for Liberty.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Trenton, good morning, Good morning, Thank you for having me on.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Good to have you. So, tell us a little bit
about the agenda items here. I see flood warning systems.
I see emergency communications relief funding for the Hill Country
area as well. What can you tell us?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Yeah, I mean, you know, just from what I've taken
a look at, and you know, I deal with a
lot of young people on kind of our campus side
of things, and you know, I talk to a lot
of people to issues really matter to them. And just
from the nature of this session, I think we're going
to see a big priority focus on those flood related
pieces of legislation. What those are going to look like

(00:54):
versus what the governor is asking for. Not really one
hundred percent sure of what we're going to look at
on that you saw this last session. I mean, anytime
there was a mild disagreement over semantics, we had point
of order point of order, point of order. So this
could be something where we're seeing, you know, millions of
dollars allocated, could see maybe you know, thousands of dollars

(01:15):
allocated to the disaster relief funds. So I'm certainly curious
to see how that's going to turn out. But that's
definitely one Like if you had to ask me, what's
the one thing that's going to be accomplished or tackled, Uh,
that would be the issue that I believe that legislature
is going to go after.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yeah, no question about it. That is very, very important.
Let's talk about some of those issue issues facing young Americans.
Since you are with Young Americans for Liberty, Protecting children
from THHC is going to be on this agenda, legislation
making it a crime to provide hemp derived products to
children under twenty one years of age, and also regulating
those hemp derived products themselves. What do you think?

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Yeah, well, I would like to challenge the language for
our stuff on the term children under twenty one. I
think I'd be fine with children under eighteen. But I
think just like with you know, other substances. Of course,
you know, we raise tobacco to twenty one which I
disagree with personally. I think if you're an adult living
on your own, you ought to be able to consume

(02:17):
those substances. I mean, I would argue that in some
cases we see more violence and damage to health from alcohol,
but I'd still support an eighteen to twenty year old
being able to purchase a beer, especially if you can
go en list the military, purchase firearm pay taxes. But
I do see the concern for certainly people under eighteen,

(02:42):
miners that you know don't have the full I guess
scope to make those decisions yet about substances that you
know could have long lasting effects on them with you know,
too much consumption. So I mean, I think think that
we won't see an all an all out ban like

(03:03):
was attempted, but I think we're gonna see probably some
more regulations. I would assume, probably something related to maybe
the type of marketing, maybe higher penalties on you know,
distributors that distribute to minors. It could be something like
State of Oklahoma. I don't know if they're going to
try and issue some sort of card, So it's gonna

(03:25):
be interesting to see kind of the pushback that they
get from I think kind of the younger voter base
that does want to consume THHD products versus kind of
the older generation. And I think that's where we're seeing
a lot of the disconnect, right. I think it's a
generational issue where people like myself, you know, we see
marijuana THHD products and it's like, eh, whatever, Like it's

(03:46):
just like a beer, just like you know, smoking a
pack of cigarettes. But for some people it's been kind
of demonized, in my opinion, unfairly when we compare it
to other substances.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Yeah. Yeah, Well, I think you and I can agree
on the eighteen to twenty one thing. I think we
have to decide what an adult is. I think, not
just in Texas, with this country, we have to decide
what is an adult eighteen or twenty one because of
these different standards that you're talking about. Any other items
on the special Agenda list that are of great interest
to you and to young Americans For liberty.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, I mean I would like to think that, you know,
property taxes is something that is important to young people
and myself. You know, I'd like to be able to
own a.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Home one day.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
You know, right now it's already pretty unaffordable in a
lot of places, and so I think that, you know,
eliminating property tax outright allows more home buyers to be
able to own their home, you know, right now, as
long as there's property taxes, you'll never own a home.
You'll always be renting out to the government. So I
don't want to just see small incremental cuts. I want

(04:47):
to see complete and total abolition eventually. So that's an
issue that's important to me. That's an issue that seems
to be important to a lot of people my age
that I talk to when we talk about like taxes.
Of course, Texas with their income tax, that's already been
very beneficial since that whenever I ended up first moving
down to Texas compared to you know, where I was living.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
I think, I think the generations, I think the generations
Trenton are in agreement on that. I think seniors are
worried about their property taxes being taxed out of their
homes that they have bought and paid for, and then
young folks like yourself, I think as well. Property tax
is a huge issue in Texas and quite frankly across
the country. Trent rather the time here. Thank you so
much for us speaking on it. Trent and Rippy young
Americans for liberty. We appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Thank you very much.
