Here on Texas Home Improvement, your total home Improvement source.

Speaker 8 (02:35):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (02:35):
With that, we might as well jump into some emails
to get things started here. So Jan asks about hard
well water, very hard well water, best system to correct it? Well,
you know nowadays they have a lot of different systems available.
You've got systems available for just filtering the well water

(02:59):
to doing a softener. I can tell you that our
dear lease is in East Texas over by Woodville, and
we've got a well there with a lot of sulfur
in it and hard water, and so we have a

(03:19):
British system on there. And that British system has a
tank that not only does it filter out the sulfur
and all that stuff, it runs it through the softener
as well, keeps our pipes good, keeps the smell away
from the sulfur and all that stuff. So it works
very well. The two systems I would recommend you take

(03:42):
a look at, because I've used both of these over
the years, is that British system and Culligan. And the
way it works is most of them will have to
test the water, and I shouldn't say most all of
them need to test the water and design around exactly
what your water is uh. And keep in mind, you

(04:05):
know there's a lot of companies who will advertise that
assault free softeners. When you get into very hard water,
you have to use a salt system. Even the ones
who advertise a salt free system if if it gets
into really hard water, they're using a salt system in
order to clean up and soften the water for you.

(04:29):
All righty again, if you got a question seven one
three two one two five eight seven four. That's seven
one three, two one two five eight seven four.

Speaker 9 (04:43):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (04:44):
Tony sent in. I recently replaced a bathroom heater fan
light fixture in bathroom. Would like to insulate around it
as it is directly below a gable. Are there safe
materials to use around this fixture? Thinks you would need
to pull get the manufacturer specs. Now, most newer fixtures, yes,

(05:09):
they have a way that you can insulate because they
no longer have the incandescent bulbs in it that put
out a lot of heat. But you're you have a
fixture here that has a heat system as well, and
for that, yes, I would recommend that you pull the
manufacturer specs if you if you don't have the papers

(05:31):
from when it was put in uh. Just google it online,
pull the specs and and see what it's it's saying
to use, because that can make a huge difference for you.
And look the issue that you can run into, like
if it's it's uh cellulos, for instance, insulation that you

(05:54):
get up to it. Cellulos can have paper in it,
it can have a blue gene material, you know, cloth
and stuff like that. That's reason it degrades over time
and turns to dust. Usually fiberglass can be done. Old
light canisters. They used to make a box that you
could put over it to insulate it. But you can't

(06:14):
do that with this fixture because you've got that exhaust
fan hose coming out of it. So that would eliminate
you being able to do that. So again, just get
the manufacture specs and it'll tell you whether you can
or cannot do something with it. So again our number
seven one three two one two five eight seven four.

(06:37):
That's seven one three, two one two five eight seven four.
Any home improvement question you have, feel free to pick
up the phone, give me a call and I'll see
what I can do to help you out here on
Texas Home Improvement. My your am, I your Total Home
Improvement source k out of pair lands is uh name

(06:59):
of wood? I'm trying to remember the name of the
wood sealer that you recommend, and my mind isn't working.
Ha ha oh one quick question. Excuse me, I had
to cough, had to hit the mute button. There you're
talking about ready Seal, and Ready Seal is a great

(07:20):
do it yourself product. It's oil based. It soaks deep
down into the wood fibers, so the wood's not taken
on moisture any longer. And you can tint it or
not tint it. You know, they've got clear to a
dark walnut. And so yeah, Ready seal is what you're
looking for. You can find it at Low's home depot,

(07:42):
typically Ace hardware, lumberyards. I mean virtually any place that
sells building materials is carrying Ready Seal typically so again
our number seven one three two one two five eight
seven four. That's one three, two, one two five eight

(08:03):
seven four. And uh weighing up in the woodlands. Is
there such a thing as a gutter for leaves and
a different gutter for pine straw? I have lots of both.
Thanks for reviewing this.

Speaker 10 (08:23):
You know.

Speaker 7 (08:25):
There are different types of gutter covers. Now, I would
tell you take a look at gutter Max or leaf
Guard for what you've got, because the way those they're
designed as a helmet, so as the leaves and pine
needles and stuff are coming down the roof with it,

(08:46):
it is literally going over the helmet. The leaves and
everything shove off to the to the ground and the
water wraps around with the helmet into the gutter itself.
So that would that would be what my recommendation would be.

(09:07):
Do they make it different for the straw, you know,
the pine needles versus the leaves? Not really, there just
are some things that work better. Again, if you got
a question seven one three, two, one two, five eight
seven four, We're gonna head out to Willis and Jerry.
This is Jim. How can I help you?

Speaker 11 (09:29):
Hey, Jim, Uh, I got a hairline crack in my
ceramic tileing uh right outside of my bedroom. And that's
like I said, hairline cracker. I'm just wonder nervous. Do
I have any concerns about foundation while.

Speaker 7 (09:45):
There and what exactly and what was cracked?

Speaker 11 (09:50):
Well, the tile, the ceramic towel that I put on
over top of the concrete.

Speaker 7 (09:55):
Okay, the larger area of tile that you do, the
more likely you are to go over a crack that's
in the concrete. Because all concrete cracks by nature, and
so the fact that you get a hairline crack in
your tile, no, would not concern me a whole lot.
If you were getting foundation movement, you would see it

(10:17):
higher up, you know, like cracks in the sheet rock
above windows and doors, cracks and brick veneer things like that.
To fix this, yeah, and to fix this, do you
still have some of the tile?

Speaker 8 (10:35):
Yes?

Speaker 7 (10:36):
Okay? You can take those pieces of tile up, clean
off the adhesive that was used, and they make some
elastic type adhesives for going over cracks like that. If
you go over to a floor and decor if they
have it, and when you put the new tile pieces
down with that adhesive, you won't have to worry about

(10:59):
it because as the concrete expands and contracts with the
temperature of moisture changes, it won't come through the tile.

Speaker 11 (11:09):
Okay, Okay, I don't take a look at.

Speaker 7 (11:13):
That, alrighty, you take care.

Speaker 12 (11:17):
All right.

Speaker 7 (11:20):
Yeah, And it's a it is a very common problem,
uh to have that, so uh, it's one of those
things you'll have to deal with any and if you've
got a big room, they actually make mats that can
go down to repay keep that from happening when when
you have it in larger areas. But the adhesives that

(11:40):
they use nowadays, why they don't use it on all
of them, I don't know, but definitely when you have
in that type of issue, you want to get one
of those. Again. Our number seven one three two one
two five eight seven four. It's seven one three two
one two five eight seven four. We're going to take
a quick break here on Texas home improvement, but hey,

He said, yep, they've used the wrong time cheal it.

Speaker 7 (15:50):

improvement sour seven one three two one two five eight
seven four gin it seven three two one two five
eight seven four. We're going to head out to uh
full sure and John, welcome to Texas Home Improvement. Not
can I help you?

Speaker 12 (16:10):
Jim, thank you so much for taking my call. Love
your show. Uh it's like getting graduate school credit in
home repair and home improvement, So thanks for that.

Speaker 7 (16:20):
I appreciate that. Thank you.

Speaker 12 (16:22):
I've got a fourteen year old house and I've listened
to your comments and your calls on root barriers that
you have posted on your website.

Speaker 8 (16:35):
There.

Speaker 12 (16:35):
Yeah, and they center around the age of the tree.

Speaker 7 (16:40):
Uh.

Speaker 12 (16:40):
So I can tell you that these I have two
magnolia trees, one four feet away from the house, the
other one's five feet away from the house, and they
were installed just after the home was built. So I
think I'm free to cut them down based on your
previous advice, cut them down or put it in a
room barrier. Correct, that's what I'm deliberating, which I'm skeptical

(17:05):
that a root barrier actually works in my mind, that
I'm in my naive mind. And again I'm not an
expert on this, which is why I'm calling you. It
seems to me like a band aid or a placebo.
And the trees. I can give you a little more
detail on Themre's two Magnoli trees. I believe the builder

(17:28):
thought they were gem magnolias, but they've turned into you know,
they each have like about a seven inch trunk in diameter,
and they're twenty five to thirty feet high. They're beautiful.
My wife and I love them, but we love our
house more so. Sure, so we cut them down or

(17:49):
should we put in a root barrier.

Speaker 7 (17:51):
Well, I'll tell you how a root barrier works. Most
roots are in the top eighteen inches of the soil hall.
The root barriers that I install, I go three feet,
so I'm thirty six inches and I use a high
density plastic so the moisture doesn't travel through the barrier.

(18:11):
Now there are you know, fabrics, they're used as root barriers.

Speaker 14 (18:17):
That have.

Speaker 7 (18:20):
Beads in them for letting out chemicals so the roots
don't grow and stuff. The moisture's still going to travel
through that. So in that case, the root area is
not going to do what you need it to do,
but the high density plastic doesn't let the moisture go through.
I've been installing them for forty plus years already, and no,

(18:40):
it is it going to last forever? No, I wouldn't
say that. But the ones we've been monitoring over the years,
I have seen them for a minimum of twenty five
years working and you know they're still working. I can't
say when they're going to stop. And as far as

(19:03):
how much difference can it make. We had one house
that we monitored for several years that we put a
root barrier and an irrigation system in to try to
bring it back up, and within a year it raised
it an inch and a half.

Speaker 17 (19:17):
So wow.

Speaker 7 (19:19):
Yes, they actually do a great job if installed properly.

Speaker 12 (19:25):
Yeah, that's always the advice I've read online if installed properly,
and I have every confidence that do was would install
it properly. So thanks. So, if it were your house,
would you take the tree, would you cut the trees down?
Or would you install the root barrier?

Speaker 7 (19:43):
I put root barriers in my own house.

Speaker 12 (19:46):
Okay, all right, all right, Well that's uh, that's the
answer I was looking for.

Speaker 7 (19:53):
Now, I will ask you, you know, I will tell
you though yours are close enough that I would not
in most most of the time, I tell people, let's
wait until we see the first signs of movement, then
get the barrier in. But your trees are so close
to the home, that's not something I would put off.

(20:14):
You're going to want to put the barriers in early
so the tree sends its roots in the other direction
to keep it healthy.

Speaker 9 (20:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 12 (20:23):
Yeah, I've got other considerations too, because they are twenty
five thirty feet high. You know, should we get another hurricane,
your barrel came right through our neighborhood, and thankfully these
trees did not bother our roof. But if another one
comes through and happens to be a slightly different orientation.

Speaker 7 (20:42):
You know, they can make a difference.

Speaker 12 (20:44):
That's totally yeah, but that's a separate, separate question.

Speaker 7 (20:49):
But it well, the big thing on trees surviving the
hurricanes is, you know when when you watch them on
the news, it's it's always the trees that haven't been
trimmed and thinned and all that stuff that are blowing
over because they just get too much windlowd on that canopy.
So keep it thinned out, keep it, uh, you know,

(21:10):
where it's not such a thick canopy that the wind
can't go through it, and typically the trees will withstand it.

Speaker 12 (21:17):
Okay, that's good advice. Thank you so much. All right,
very very helpful.

Speaker 7 (21:22):
You have a merry Christmas.

Speaker 12 (21:24):
Yeah, Merry Christmas to you too, Jim, appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (21:26):
You bet, bye by and we're getting ready to take
a break for news, traffic and weather. We'll be back
with more Texas home improvements seven one three, two, one two, five,
eight seven four. You know, American standard heating and air

(22:00):
conditioning systems are nationally recognized for excellence for performance, reliability,
and customer satisfaction. And I can tell you it'll take
care of your family all year long. And American Standard
air conditioning systems have been my choice since nineteen ninety nine.
I put my first one in my house when I
lived in San Antonio. Now I have the variable speed

(22:23):
in my house and I love it. I gotta tell
you it makes such a difference on the humidity control.
So American Standard technology it does meet the ever changing
Texas weather. You know what we're talking about, where we
got to keep our home cool. Like today, you've got
the air conditioner going and tonight you're probably gonna want
a little bit of heat going. But you know, you

(22:43):
invest wisely. You invest in the home comfort system that
will last you a long long time. And that's why
you say comfort the way you like it. American standardair
dot com. And when you go to their website again,
make sure you check out that duel speed and variable speed.

Speaker 18 (23:05):

You'll get to the year old you can't be my
freaking toolbar the home.

Speaker 6 (23:40):
Merry Christmas from Texas Home Improvement.

Speaker 16 (23:43):
Here's more with Jim Dutton.

Speaker 7 (23:46):
Hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvement. Seven one three,
two one two five eight seven four Again. Any home
improvement question you have, pick up the phone, give me
a calling. Let's talk about it here on Texas Home Improvement.
We're going to head the Baton Rouge. Hello Johnny, Hello
Jim Dunn't how are you today?

Speaker 19 (24:09):
Not all bad? You know that?

Speaker 8 (24:11):
Well?

Speaker 7 (24:12):
How can I help you?

Speaker 19 (24:12):
Life could be a lot worse always? My question is
next Saturday, my wife and I are leaving for two
weeks from our home here in Baton Rouge and going
to spend Christmas with my son in Las Vegas. My
wife insists that we turn the water off, the main

(24:33):
water line off while we're gone. And what I've read
about shutting hot water heaters, all they say is if
only if you're going for an extended period of time.
Do you consider two weeks an extended.

Speaker 17 (24:49):
Period of time?

Speaker 19 (24:50):
Now, I'm seventy eight. I have some hip issues and
I can't get up in my attic, so that would
be a major thank for me.

Speaker 7 (24:59):
Yeah, Now an extended period of time would be months.
But for being gone for a couple of weeks, that
water heater is going to be just fine.

Speaker 19 (25:10):
Okay, it's a sixty gallon heater. Yeah, should have enough
liquid in it too until we get back.

Speaker 7 (25:18):
Absolutely, But your wife, your wife is right shut the
water off.

Speaker 19 (25:26):
Yes, I've looked at the thirty day forecast and it
looks like, you know what the weather people are saying,
we shouldn't have any cold, colder weather than say, around
in the low thirties during that period of time. But
you know, mother nature will do what it's going to do,
and so we may have. But I was just wondering

(25:49):
about the hot water heater and it just when it
said extended period, what was professionals point of view of
what that meant.

Speaker 7 (25:58):
Yeah, if you tell me you're going to go out
there for a couple of months, I would say not,
you need to go up and shut it off. But
for just two weeks, it'll be just fine because it's
not like the water's boiling or anything, so it's not
going to be losing the water that's in it.

Speaker 15 (26:17):
Now.

Speaker 7 (26:17):
I will tell you I was just out in Vegas
myself for a while. I went out for the National
Rodeo Conference out there, and make sure you take some
lotion with you. My gosh, my skin got dry out there.

Speaker 19 (26:34):
Oh where where. We've been out there a couple of
times already, and in fact, the last time we were
there the last fourth of July night. It was one
hundred and seventeen fourth of July. Yeah, afternoon.

Speaker 7 (26:48):
Well, I was there a week before last and watching
the weather, watching the news. They were saying that was
day one hundred and forty five with no measurable rain fall.
I mean, they just have zero moisture in the air
out there right now, right, that's right.

Speaker 17 (27:09):
Well, so.

Speaker 7 (27:12):
Now I'm gonna be I'm gonna be going. I'm gonna
be going back out there in January for the World
of Concrete, and I'll do my best, do my best
to bring him some rain with that one. Good luck
with that, Johnny. You have a wonderful trip.

Speaker 19 (27:30):
And Merry Christmas to you.

Speaker 7 (27:32):
Merry Christmas to you as well.

Speaker 19 (27:35):
Bye bye.

Speaker 7 (27:37):
And you know, when I was younger, I didn't go
to a lot of conferences and stuff because I always
thought you wouldn't learn a lot. But you know, every
single thing I go to, I learned something nowadays, and uh,
I went to the rodeo. I didn't go to the
rodeo itself. I went to their conference out there to

(27:59):
learn about the different acts that were available and how
to take care of some of the issues with running
a rodeo and stuff, and it was very informative. I've
been out to World of Concrete before. I learned something
every time I go, well, I'm going this time because

(28:19):
the National Foundation Repair Association is going to have a
booth out there and I'm going to go help man
the booth. And I went for the rodeo conference because
January one will be taking over as president of the
Pasadena Livestock Showing Rodeo. And so you got to learn,
you got you got to keep up with what's going

(28:40):
on in order to keep things moving. So always got
to be you're either learning or or you're just stagnant.
And I don't believe in being stagnant. So anyways, if
you got a question seven one three two one two
five eight seven four, that's seven one three two five

(29:00):
eight seven four, and I'll see what I can do
to help you out here on Texas Home Improvement your
Total Home Improvement source and as we were just talking about,
I know a lot of people are going to be
traveling for the holidays. Yes, shut the water off to
your house. Even though we don't have a lot of
rain in the or cold weather rather in the forecast,

(29:20):
you don't know if that changes. And it's not just
the cold weather that can cause your problems. You can
have a pinhole developed in a pipe at any given time.
You can have that same thing happen in a water
heater at any given time. By having the water shut off,
you minimize your damage. Now, granted, if the water heater breaks,

(29:42):
you got fifty gallons of water coming out, but then
at least that's the end of it. So shut the
water off. If you're going to be gone for a
week or two, go around and unplug all the electronics
and stuff that you're not using. Everything puts a draw,
and you know you will be surprised that it will

(30:05):
make a difference on your electric bill at the end
of the month not having all that stuff sitting there.
And that includes chargers for cell phones and stuff that
you're not even having anything hooked up to because it's
it's always sending a little signal out looking to see
does it have anything to charge. So it does make
a difference. Why I don't know, but it does. So

(30:27):
shut it off and let's be safe about it again.

Hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvements. Seven one three,

Speaker 9 (35:35):
Thank you. Just a quick question. I got a fifteen
hundred and fifty square foot house and I wanted to
get a generator big enough to run the house. I'm
biking a generator. What I need.

Speaker 7 (35:47):
In general a house normally is going to be something
around twenty two kW. Now what they do, though, is
they come in and they look at what you have
for AC and heating and all the appliances and all
the different things to narrow down the exact size. Because

(36:09):
there's you know, eighteen thousand, there's twenty four thousand, there's
thirty thousand, But you said fifteen hundred square feet correct. Yeah,
so you're probably going to be something in the twenty
twenty two thousand kW range.

Speaker 9 (36:26):
Happy that I appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (36:28):
Alrighty, Now, are you going to have one that's permanently
a fix that automatically comes on, or are you're going
to be using a portable type.

Speaker 9 (36:39):
I'm looking for a portable type that I can get
white fired in.

Speaker 7 (36:43):
Okay, I would tell you call Right Touch Electrical and
let them do the wire the hookup for it, because
while they're doing that and putting in the switch for it,
they can check and see, you know what all you
have and give you an exact size to put in,

(37:04):
because you know, you may get away with a fifteen
thousand kW, which would be a whole lot less expensive, said,
Right Touch, Right Touch Electrical, and their number is two
eight one six four five. I'm sorry, okay, And I
had I had them put a whip in at at

(37:26):
our office so that we can plug in our generators
when the power's out. We didn't use one that goes automatic,
and let's face it, for most of us, we don't
need the automatic on and off.

Speaker 8 (37:37):
But.

Speaker 7 (37:39):
It's nice to have the ability to turn power back
on when needed. So all right, so right touch Electrical
at two eight one six four five five five two.

Speaker 9 (37:54):
Six cool, Thank you very much.

Speaker 7 (37:58):
You bet you take care. And what they'll do is
they can they can come out and put and put
in a whip with a plug to go into your generator. Uh,
they can put in the switch into the breaker box
so that you don't have to worry about uh starting

(38:19):
up your generator and sending power up the line and
electrocuting some poor guy who's working on the power lines
in the miserable weather. Uh do you know, just doing
his job and getting back feed up the line. And
that really is a big thing. And that's why I'm
always pushing get a professional to hook that whip in.

(38:40):
That is not a do it yourself project because you
want to make sure it is right. And I know,
right touch Electrical, Well we'll get that done right for
you anyway. Seven one three two one two five eight
seven four. That's seven one three two one two five

looking for ready seal it and it's available everywhere. Box stores,
lumber yards, hardware stores, almost any place that carries building
materials has it. And yes, it's super easy. Look all

(39:27):
the different things I talk about, it's probably the simplest
do it yourself project because you can't screw it up.
I have tried to make it run and streak and
all that stuff, and the way it soaks in and spreads,
it just doesn't happen. So that that's the project that
you can put your virtually anybody on doing. And again

Home Improvement with Jim dottm Hey.

Speaker 7 (44:32):
Welcome back to Texas Home Improvement, your total home improvement source.
So got an email from Susie. She says, Dear Jim,
my name is Susie and I would like to get
some information please on my standing scene metal roof. I
live in the Heights bungalow that had a new standing
seam metal roof installed in twenty sixteen. The home is

(44:54):
about twenty two hundred square foot. The summer of twenty
two was absolutely brew and at the end of the
summer black tar was dripping all around my home at
the valleys of the standing seeing metal roof, similar to
two gables meeting each other, continuously dripping large amounts of
black tar. We can't get any kind of cooperation from

(45:18):
the builder. Could you please send someone to my home
to give me an idea of what I can do
with this problem? Do I have to pull the metal
panels off and scrape that underlying sheath, or do I
have to get a new roof? Thank you, well, I
don't send people out for that. I mean I have

(45:38):
a foundation repair. I send guys out for that. I
have plumbing company, I'll send guys out for that, and
I have air conditioning roofing. Though Guardian roof Systems give
them a call, they can have somebody come out for you.
I can tell you right now though they use the
wrong type of tar underneath there, it's heating up liquefying

(45:59):
to run. More likely you're gonna have to take the
panels off, clean it up underneath, and that panels can
be reinstalled. You can reach Guardian roof Systems at two
eight one four zero, seven seven to eight zero. We're
gonna take a quick break and then we got another
hour of Texas Home improvement to go. You know, lental

(46:32):
lift is a product that a lot of us don't
realize we need it until we start looking at an
overhead garage door and we see this big sag in
the middle and you're thinking, okay, well, what is that hurting? Well,
if the the lentil is sagging in the garage door
to the point where you're seeing it. So are the

(46:52):
roof rafters. That means the shingle there's a dip up there.
That means if you had a second floor up there,
you're probably getting sheet rocked, cracks and all kinds of
stuff you just don't want happening. What Lental Lift does
is they come in with a new, heavier lental beam.
They take off all the trim, get down to where
the old lentil is, put this new lentil in place,

(47:15):
picking up the old one at the same time, fasten
everything back into place where it belongs, retrim the overhead opening,
and guess what, they give you a lifetime guarantee that
this won't happen again. Eight three three nine zero three
two two two six for Lental Lift.

(50:25):
Gerald from Baytown sent in, I have a home on
a slab with an attached garage and what I think
was originally a breezeway was I'm not sure what that
is Walden halfway and utility room was created on the
inside with the flagstone porch alcove on the outside. The

(50:48):
concrete flooring under the interior floor and under the flagstone
on the outside has failed. And I don't know do
I get a foundation company or a remark modeling company
because the flooring will have to be taken up, and
I need a patio report, and I'm concerned that the

(51:10):
external wall will have to be removed to pour that
as one foundation. So the question is should I get
a remodeling company and they can bring in someone to
do the concrete or a foundation company. I had a
company come out that would do the injection and they
wouldn't touch it because they felt like the injection would

(51:32):
come up around the concrete on the inside. Okay, I
will tell you I do wes. We've done a lot
of jobs where we have to support the structure, take
out the old foundation and put a new one in.
Sometimes they're just not salvageable and you've got to go
in with a new foundation so that can be done.
I will tell you again, you know I do eurothane injection,

(51:56):
and I tell people all the time, don't do that
on a residential home. It's great for patios, driveways, sidewalks,
all that kind of stuff. But when you're doing a
slab inside, a lot of people are going to be
having issues right now that had them done during the
drought when it was nice and dry, and now we've

(52:18):
had a little bit of rain the soils to swell.
It's I'm getting a lot of calls on new homes
that are moving that were built in the last say
three years, and homes that had the yuurthane injection for
the middle of the house are having the same problem.
So but yes, as far as who do you call,

(52:38):
give do West a call Gerald. We can take care
of that for you. Seven one three four seven three
seven one five six. And like I said, we I
mean we've replaced garage slabs, we've replaced house slabs. A
breezeway like this, no pun intended would be a breeze
got a question two one two five eight seven four.

(53:02):
That's seven one three two one two five eight seven four.
And I'll see what I can do to help you
out here on Texas Home Improvement. Heading to Beaumont, Joshua.
Welcome to seven forty k t r H.

Speaker 2 (53:17):
It's sir, thanks for taking my call. I've had a
got a ten year got about a ten year old
house with I think it was a thirty year architectural shingle,
and so now it's starting to get these little dark
spots part of this coating that you can get sprayed on.

Speaker 17 (53:36):
Does that work?

Speaker 2 (53:37):
Does that really extend the life of your roof?

Speaker 17 (53:39):
Save your roof?

Speaker 7 (53:41):
Well, it depends on what's going on with it. Uh.
The dark spots are typically just accumulation of dirt and
mold and mildews and stuff, and so it'll make dark
streaks and dark spots on the roof and that can
just be cleaned off. Uh. Where the the roofs can
get extended is as a age they start drying out

(54:05):
and curling a little bit. That extension stuff that they're
marketing actually is kind of an oil based product that
soaks into the asphalt part of the shingle in order
to revitalize it. It does add some time, not as
much time as they try to tell us it does.

(54:27):
You know, the Northern States, it would it probably you
probably would get five years added. Down here, you're going
to get a year or two extra out of it.
And the biggest issue that I have with it, it
costs you almost half the cost of a new roof.
I would simply put a new roof on if that
was the case. But I don't think that's what's going

(54:48):
on with yours. I think yours. You know, you got
a thirty year shingle, ten years into it getting black spots.
That's just a matter of cleaning it and you'll be
good to go.

Speaker 2 (55:00):
Okay, So what would be the best way to clean it,
like a leap solution or what?

Speaker 15 (55:06):
Now?

Speaker 7 (55:06):
They actually make roof cleaners that you can put on them, now.

Speaker 2 (55:09):
Okay, awesome, Okay, I'll look into that.

Speaker 8 (55:12):
Then.

Speaker 7 (55:13):
In fact, if you go to uh oh, let's see
what lows I'm sorry, Home Depot. You hear me talk
about spray and forget and wet and forget. Sometimes they
have a product specifically for putting on a roof.

Speaker 2 (55:31):
Okay you said, Home Depot, Yes, sir, already. Well I'll
give that a try and we'll see what happens.

Speaker 7 (55:37):
Alrighty you take care, okay, thank you. Yeah. In fact,
I was just at home Depot last week down on
Fairmont and Pasadena because my townhouse I needed to do
a little clean up on some of the stuff on
the siding, and I saw they had a roof product,

(55:57):
and that was from Wet and forget leave for specifically
four doing the shingles again seven one three, two one
two five eight seven four Jeff, Welcome to Texas Home Improvement.

Speaker 17 (56:14):
Well, thank you, Jim. I appreciate you taking my call.

Speaker 3 (56:17):
I'm coming back from my house up in Lano, Texas
and it's a nineteen twenty eight craftsman great house. Till
a lottery modeling on it the last year and it's
turned out really nice. Now I'm down to figuring out
insulation wise, and I'll be honest with you. I used
USA Insulation on a smaller house I had, and they

(56:39):
did drilled the holes in the walls.

Speaker 17 (56:41):
On the outer side, pumped it full of stuff.

Speaker 3 (56:44):
Was like shaving creamp but it did a great job
insulating that house. Yeah, I blew about did fifteen to
seventeen inches in the attic because it didn't have any
insulation up there. So I moved to a bigger house,
or I bought a bigger house, and I called you say.

Speaker 17 (57:00):
It took them a while to come up with a bill, but.

Speaker 3 (57:02):
It almost tripled in price from original mouse, which was
a little over one thousand feet and this one's over
two thousand.

Speaker 17 (57:11):
I was a little concerned.

Speaker 3 (57:13):
But my only question is, now, what should I It's
parent being has no insulation under the wood floors except
you know, there's a barrier that they put down for
the new wood floors I had put in.

Speaker 17 (57:26):
What should I put?

Speaker 3 (57:27):
Well, is there some kind of home that you can
have somebody not USA Insulation.

Speaker 17 (57:32):
Don't they really do that type?

Speaker 3 (57:34):
They know somebody could come in two or three inches underneath?
What would you suggest for the floor and the rest
of it? I think I'm going to figure out.

Speaker 7 (57:42):
But okay, give me an idea.

Speaker 17 (57:45):
First.

Speaker 7 (57:45):
I will tell you I just had my house done
a couple of months ago by USA Insulation, and yeah,
it worked, it works extremely well. Loved it. But as
far as underneath the home.

Speaker 17 (57:57):
I did, I did.

Speaker 3 (57:58):
I did the walls, and I did the and then
the blowing stuff are not blowing, yeah, the blowing in that.

Speaker 8 (58:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 17 (58:03):
But this this house has no you know, it's built
the nineteen eight Yeah, it's a great house.

Speaker 7 (58:09):
But talking I try to talk to people all the time.
Don't put anything underneath the cross space house like that?
And you know people always oh, well, but my my
feed are colt and put some slippers on.

Speaker 22 (58:21):
Uh it it was twenty seven degrees up there day before. Yeah,
but the problem you run into is it rots out
the wood.

Speaker 17 (58:34):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (58:34):
One of my guys called me from under a house
this week. Now, if you're gonna insist on putting insulation,
the only one I recommend is a closed cell foam
insulation because it won't take on water. And he was
under a house that was only three years ago insulated
with an open cell foam insulation. It's holding so much

(58:58):
water that the wood is already rotting and it was
literally dripping underneath that house. It's just a real mess,
and it's gonna be thousands and thousands of dollars to
fix this problem. Where Uh, you know, you got a
house that was built in nineteen twenty eight, probably still
has all the original wood. H don't screw it up.

Speaker 20 (59:22):
Oh yeah, I had.

Speaker 3 (59:23):
Honestly they had. I hadn't sand it down and restained.
It looks brand new. Everybody that saw it over the
weekend said it's what is pristine. So I'm not I'm
gonna I'm gonna definitely listen to you on that part.

Speaker 17 (59:36):
I won't do anything underneath the house. How much of.

Speaker 3 (59:40):
The I don't think I'm gonna I've got twenty seven
new windows coming in the next two weeks.

Speaker 17 (59:44):
Been on order for months.

Speaker 3 (59:46):
Yeah, I think they're gonna be really too good windows
I had. I did my homework on it. And my
question is, once I get those windows of stall, I'm
sure that will obviously improve the keeping.

Speaker 17 (59:59):
The air in and the heat in.

Speaker 3 (01:00:01):
Because there would be double isolated and the right kind
of windows. I don't think I'm gonna do the stuff
in the walls because there's not gonna be that much
wall space left.

Speaker 17 (01:00:09):
And once we put in all the new.

Speaker 3 (01:00:10):
Windows, so I don't think I'm needing the phone. And
I really cure for people trilling in the side of
the house with that two inch hoole salt and filling
it up.

Speaker 17 (01:00:20):
Yeah, that's simple.

Speaker 3 (01:00:22):
It needed to be painted. They plugged it up. I
had it painted it and it didn't mess up to
the next chier.

Speaker 23 (01:00:29):
This house concerned it out the outside.

Speaker 3 (01:00:32):
I'm not sure exactly do yet, But you think if
I if I get the windows and then I get
somebody to do the blow in insulation, how many inches
do you need an.

Speaker 7 (01:00:42):
Addic about fifteen sixteen inches?

Speaker 3 (01:00:47):
Okay, okay, all right, is there a certain kind that
you need to get?

Speaker 17 (01:00:51):
I mean I can go to home deep.

Speaker 3 (01:00:52):
Or Lows and down the road, uh and have higher
contract to come and just blow it.

Speaker 17 (01:00:58):
In and get it really thick all the time at
the moment for proven stores.

Speaker 7 (01:01:06):
Top sure, go in a situation like you're doing, go
with the fiberglass because cellulos deteriorates over time and turns
to dust. Fiberglass won't. It'll settle, but it won't deteriorate
and turn to dust. So put the fiberglass in there
and you'll be you'll be much better off. As far

(01:01:27):
as insulating the walls, you know, you can wait on
it if you want.

Speaker 19 (01:01:32):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (01:01:32):
You will find that it will probably cut your utility bills.
On a house like what you have built in the twenties,
no insulation in those walls, you would probably cut your
utility bills by at least a third, if not a
half by putting insulation in those walls.

Speaker 8 (01:01:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 17 (01:01:52):
And I and I love what he did.

Speaker 3 (01:01:54):
The US angulation gout was straight up with and he said,
I'll guarantee it.

Speaker 17 (01:01:57):
You'll see a major improvement. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:02:00):
And that house was built in the twenties early twenties
and it made a.

Speaker 17 (01:02:05):
Big he guaranteed, and I had to admit I was
really happy with the guy.

Speaker 3 (01:02:09):
But I got a little sticker shock when I got
the new house price.

Speaker 7 (01:02:12):
Yeah, but he did, he did.

Speaker 3 (01:02:14):
He did talk about doing the underneath and I can
maybe I can get him to reduce it without that.

Speaker 9 (01:02:20):
I figured it'd be.

Speaker 3 (01:02:20):
Double what I paid up at almost eight thousand dollars
the first house.

Speaker 17 (01:02:24):
This house is I feared to be around fifteen sixteen,
and I don't have a problem with that.

Speaker 3 (01:02:28):
Before I do the outside walls with some kind can
I SHO want to work out? What do you think
of Louisiana Pacific instead of hearty plank for the outside walls.

Speaker 7 (01:02:37):
Because don't do it?

Speaker 17 (01:02:39):
Dog gone it?

Speaker 3 (01:02:42):
Okay, I heard that Louisiana Pacific products pretty good.

Speaker 7 (01:02:46):
But it is, but it does have some major issues
with it as well. And I have to take a
real quick break. I'm gonna put you on hold, I'll
let you and I'll yeah, if you want to go
out there, I'll talk about that when we come back

Speaker 1 (01:05:46):
Marry Marry Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas, Jim.

Speaker 8 (01:05:55):
Do.

Speaker 7 (01:06:00):
Hey, welcome back. To Texas Home Improvement, your total home
improvement source. So that last caller was asking about LP
siding versus Hardy. Both sidings are good, don't get me wrong,
but the LP siding has a shorter lifespan expectancy than
James Hardy siding. It requires more painting. In fact, it

(01:06:24):
requires painting like every five years, where Hardy is more
like ten to fifteen years, and it does require more
maintenance on a regular basis. The big upside it is
cheaper initially to start, So it depends on if you're
just doing it to sell or you're doing it to
stay in the place. If you're doing it just to sell,

(01:06:45):
either one is going to get you there. But if
you're doing it and you're going to stay in the place,
I would really recommend you go with James Hardy's siding.
I've had it on my house for over fifteen years now,
and only because I'm doing some remodeling I'm getting ready
to paint mine. Other than that, I haven't done a
darn thing to it. So my two cents on it

(01:07:09):
seven one three two one two five eight seven four.
We're headed to clear lay kill O Terry.

Speaker 24 (01:07:15):
Hi, Jim Good afternoon.

Speaker 25 (01:07:17):
I am calling because I've heard you and other home
improvement shows regarding the new air conditioning regulations. And my
question is my system is sixteen years old, so it's
the old R twenty two. Will those be able to
be serviced coming up? I have had it serviced twice
a year every year. I've had some capacitors replaced.

Speaker 24 (01:07:40):
And I don't have a leak I did. I have
had the evaporator coil cleaned. I changed my filters. So
that's my question.

Speaker 7 (01:07:49):
In Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas to you, and absolutely yes,
you will be able to still get it serviced. Still good,
thank you for still get everything.

Speaker 24 (01:08:01):
Oh, oh my goodness, I'm so glad I called. I
was I've been thinking about this. I was like, you
know what, he's just so great and wonderful. Let me
just call.

Speaker 7 (01:08:11):
Oh, let me get with my wife's number. You can
give her a call and tell her all those same things.

Speaker 24 (01:08:18):
Oh, she knows that she y'all just been married too long.

Speaker 7 (01:08:22):
Forty years. Yes, ma'am, Yes.

Speaker 24 (01:08:24):
I remember it was you.

Speaker 25 (01:08:25):
It was your anniversary and you've got grandkids and your
son was a marine out of the marine, and Merry
Christmas and happy New Year, and maybe.

Speaker 24 (01:08:34):
Those folks out there who were worried like me, maybe
me calling it was just God's blessing. Thank you are.

Speaker 7 (01:08:41):
Thank you so much and you have a very merry Christmas.

Speaker 24 (01:08:44):
Terry yes, sand a blessed happy New Year to you
and everyone.

Speaker 7 (01:08:47):
Thank you. Boe. Yes, you'll still be able to get
the old system service. You can still get an R
twenty two system serviced, so you don't lose any sleep
over that. And honestly, if you've got a system that
has not been giving you trouble, you don't need to
be worried about changing it out. The ones I'm recommending
you change out is if you've had a system that's

(01:09:10):
been acting up, been given you trouble, it's on its
last leg, change it before the end of the year
and save yourself a lot of money. But an AC
system can easily last twenty years if it's well maintained.
The problem is most of us don't maintain them that well.

(01:09:32):
USA Insulation, you know, we were just talking about them
a minute ago, And it can make a world of
difference on your house if you are doing like like
we were just talking about it. A house from the
twenties thirties, forties, fifties, even into the sixties. They had
no insulation in the walls. Huge difference. My personal house

(01:09:53):
built in nineteen seventy three had or eleven in the walls.
I had USA Insulation come out and redo it. Shower
way more comfortable now when we have those cold mornings,
it stays warm in there. But it reduced the noise
from outside. It increased the r value, almost doubled it.
And I got my energy bills and it drastically reduced

(01:10:16):
them as well. So I love what USA Installation can do.
Eight three two three, seven, six six eight sixty five.
That's eight three two three, seven six six eight six five.

Speaker 16 (01:10:36):
Two and fifty spreads of Mikes.

Speaker 1 (01:10:39):
I told you you had twohny plugs and won not.

Speaker 6 (01:10:41):
Let merry Christmas from Texas Home Improvement.

Speaker 16 (01:10:45):
Here's more with Jim Dutton.

Speaker 7 (01:10:48):
Hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvement. Seven one three,
two one two five eight seven four. We're gonna head
to the heights and Robert, welcome to seven forty k
t H.

Speaker 26 (01:11:01):
Hello Jim, thank you for taking a call.

Speaker 8 (01:11:02):
I had a quick question for you. I have live
in an older house.

Speaker 26 (01:11:06):
And we put in truck lading lighting about fifteen years
ago and it had traditional spotlight, four little spot bulbs
in there, and a couple of years back I put
in some LED bulb fifty watts dimmable.

Speaker 8 (01:11:20):
The old dimmer still works on them, right, and then
I know it's kind of dark when of them went out.

Speaker 26 (01:11:26):
So I'm wondering, is it okay to replace those fifty
watts with seventy five watt bulbs?

Speaker 7 (01:11:34):
Before you put the LEDs in? What size? Did you have?

Speaker 8 (01:11:39):
Fifties fifteen traditional?

Speaker 17 (01:11:42):
Oh?

Speaker 7 (01:11:42):
Fifty traditional?

Speaker 8 (01:11:44):
Then you know with the LEDs and they work fun.

Speaker 17 (01:11:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (01:11:47):
Typically, what the limitation was as far as the wattage
was how much power it was going to draw, so
that you didn't overheat wires and stuff. LED draws so
much less power. Yes, you can normally you can upsize
it like that with no problem.

Speaker 8 (01:12:04):
Okay, good, And since we're on lighting, I just realized
something while I was on hold.

Speaker 26 (01:12:09):
I have recess lighting, and in my den I have
about ten of them. Can I replace those they have old?
Well that I replaced them with LED bulbs, but can
I replace those the cancer in there in the recess lighting.
I saw some at home depot today that that screw
into the medium base, right, and it comes with cover,

(01:12:31):
but it'd be okay to replace.

Speaker 8 (01:12:32):
Them with those. Oh.

Speaker 7 (01:12:33):
Absolutely, I did my house that way.

Speaker 8 (01:12:36):
Okay, good, Well, you screw.

Speaker 7 (01:12:38):
It into the old receptacle and and it's it's got
the two clips that shove it up into there, and
and it looks just like the new recess and they
work great. I did mine probably six seven years ago
and I haven't had to change any of them out yet.

Speaker 8 (01:12:55):
Okay, good, All right, Well that answered my question. Thank
you very much, and you have a merry Christmas you
as well.

Speaker 7 (01:13:01):
Take care you too.

Speaker 8 (01:13:03):
Buy it.

Speaker 7 (01:13:05):
Again seven two two five eight seven four. It's head
up to Conroe, Fritz. This is Jim. How can I
help you?

Speaker 15 (01:13:16):
Well? Heldo there, Jim.

Speaker 10 (01:13:18):
Yeah, I have a pool barn, and uh, the previous
owner had done an office build out on the inside
with air conditioning, and I just tore that out because
it smelled funny and had some other problems. And uh,
what I discovered was the ceiling and the walls were
totally packed with rat and mouse filled.

Speaker 15 (01:13:43):
And I want to do another.

Speaker 10 (01:13:45):
Build out, but I don't really want to do it
if there's no way to avoid that if you've got
suggestions of how to keep rodentia out of the walls
and ceiling, I'm I'm listening.

Speaker 7 (01:13:55):
No more so than any other building. Uh. You know,
typically what brings all that is the surrounding area. If
it has the rats and mice and stuff like that,
they're looking for a nice place to go. So you
got to keep it everything trimmed up. You need to
seal everything when you build it, and that normally keeps

(01:14:19):
them out. Now is it foolproof? Absolutely not. A brand
new house can have them in it. But I mean
it doesn't matter if you build it solid concrete walls.
Somehow those things figure out how to get in.

Speaker 10 (01:14:35):
You know, that's bad because I was hoping for a
real solution, But okay, I'll take your word for it.
And also I'd like to make a comment sure regarding
one of your other calls, the whole backup home generator thing.
You know, this year we had about six power outages.

(01:14:58):
Of course, barrel was horrible. I was we were out
for about six.

Speaker 15 (01:15:01):
Days right and running that generator around the clock.

Speaker 10 (01:15:07):
We were spending about one hundred dollars a day in
fuel and and no, it was just a pure cost
I mean, there's no real benefit.

Speaker 15 (01:15:15):
And I did.

Speaker 10 (01:15:16):
I did months of research on solar and stuff it,
and I called people and I got a lot of
people saying things like, you know, this is Texas. We're
oil and gas, not solar. But and the cost of
a backup, full backup home generator was going to be
like fifteen grand. One of my neighbors did it, and

(01:15:36):
I thought, my goodness, but I'm going to tell you
a solar system with backup batteries. I spent about eighteen
nineteen thousand dollars and plus you get that thirty percent
text credit right, and did the whole thing myself. And
I just want to throw this out there because I
think that the time has come for DIY solar to

(01:15:59):
be actually pretty farunction.

Speaker 15 (01:16:00):
And I'm not trying to sell anything. He said that,
I'm so happy I did it. It's just a wonderful thing.

Speaker 7 (01:16:06):
So let me ask you about that then, because for
most people doing something that complicated, it probably isn't in
their wheelhouse. What do you do that you were capable
of doing that?

Speaker 19 (01:16:19):
Uh?

Speaker 10 (01:16:19):
Well, I'm retired, so I had a whole lot of
time to read up and study the electrical and all
that kind of stuff. And when it came to the
electrical of course that's the big thing, right, tyny right.
I was pretty scared of it, and so I couldn't
find any electricians who would do it for me.

Speaker 15 (01:16:38):
So I had I.

Speaker 10 (01:16:39):
Did find one guy, like a friend of a friend,
and he came over and I said, just look at
this before I pulled the lever and see if I
did it right.

Speaker 15 (01:16:47):
And he goes, oh, yeah, you're good to go. That's fine.

Speaker 10 (01:16:49):
That was the sum total of the help that I had.
But you know, I just think it's doable. I don't
I don't have any particular background anything.

Speaker 7 (01:16:57):
So okay, so your battery backup system is it? Is
it large enough it's able to run the HVAC as well?

Speaker 10 (01:17:04):
Or oh yeah, yeah, we've got In fact, I've got
three three ton units in my house and I've run
them all three at the same time.

Speaker 15 (01:17:11):
Off the batteries.

Speaker 7 (01:17:13):
Wow.

Speaker 10 (01:17:13):
I joke with my wife, I go, how do you
like your battery powered oven?

Speaker 8 (01:17:19):
So?

Speaker 7 (01:17:20):
What WHAT'SI solar erase do you have? Then?

Speaker 10 (01:17:24):
I bought a palette of thirty six panels four hundred
wats each roughly okay, and uh, I've only put twenty
four of the thirty six up so far. And when
the sun's out, we don't use any grid power at all,
and when it's cloudy and I still get a surprising

(01:17:46):
amount of wattage off of the solar panels like today, right,
But we do use some grid power when it's cloudy, Okay,
but it's it's the ultimate backup battery, you know, having
the grid.

Speaker 7 (01:17:58):
So will your solar And I'm gonna say on a
sunny day, because I know on cloudy day it would
struggle probably, But on a sunny day running the HVAC
system and stuff, will the solar keep up, keeping the
batteries charged and stuff like when we're a total out
of power. Absolutely, And I'll be honest with you. Love,

(01:18:22):
I do love solar. It's just in a lot. It
cost wise doesn't make sense unless you're getting those tax
rebates and credits and stuff like that, because it is
very expensive. But like you said, when you get that
thirty percent tax credit and sometimes the power company will
give you rebates and stuff, it does become affordable. Then

(01:18:45):
I use it on my RV when I go like
to Oshkosh for the fly in I don't have power
hookups and stuff. I run solar to keep my RV
going at that time.

Speaker 15 (01:18:57):
Yeah, that's you must be a pilot, Jim.

Speaker 7 (01:19:00):
I'm working on it. I've been a student pilot for
the last four years and I keep telling this is
a year I got to finish it. But time I
just don't have time.

Speaker 15 (01:19:13):
Oh yeah, yeah, I get it. Well, you work pretty hard,
I can see that.

Speaker 8 (01:19:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (01:19:17):
But now the solar and what really intrigued me on
what you were talking about is the battery backup system,
because that's where a lot of people fail. They want
the solar panels and that's great while the sun is out,
but once the sun goes, they don't have the backup
batteries to keep it going. But that technology has really

(01:19:39):
been increasing rapidly.

Speaker 10 (01:19:41):
Yeah, and the price has been coming down, and I
finally go, oh, it's time to do it. I mean yeah,
the batteries were the most expensive part. The whole palette
of solar panels was about four thousand dollars. The batteries
were about seven thousand dollars.

Speaker 7 (01:19:55):
Wow, the inverter and.

Speaker 10 (01:19:59):
All that, and I only got a twelve thousand lot inverter.
It's not huge, and it's surprising how little power you
actually use on average in a house. You just get
those big spikes, you know.

Speaker 7 (01:20:10):
Yeah, especially if you're careful what you're doing.

Speaker 15 (01:20:13):
Yeah, you me, we have not had any problem at all.

Speaker 10 (01:20:19):
I would maybe one problem is if the power goes out,
I wouldn't know it, just because it's absolutely seamless. It's
really a wonderful thing. So anyway, I encourage anybody that
happened to be listening to, you know, to dig into
it if you like to be a little bit off grid.
It also gives me the confidence that if I bought

(01:20:39):
some house out in the middle of nowhere, I'd be
able to power it no problem.

Speaker 7 (01:20:43):
Oh yeah, yeah, much better now than it was even
five years ago.

Speaker 15 (01:20:47):
Yes, much better and much cheaper. Yeah.

Speaker 7 (01:20:50):
Okay, well, sir, I appreciate this. I enjoyed the call.

Speaker 15 (01:20:57):
Thank you, Jim. I always enjoy talking to you.

Speaker 7 (01:21:00):
Thank you, sir. You have a merry Christmas.

Speaker 15 (01:21:03):
Thank you.

Speaker 7 (01:21:05):
And with that we got to take a quick break.
Let's talk about air conditioning, real quick. Do West air conditioning. Oh,
by the way, our number seven one three two, one two,
five eight seven four I do have all open lines now,
but seven one three two one two five, eight seven
four Dos air Conditioning my company. You know we were
talking about the new AC systems a minute ago with

(01:21:29):
the caller. Look, if your system has not been given
you trouble and it's only ten, twelve years old or whatever,
you don't necessarily need a new one.

Speaker 8 (01:21:39):
Now.

Speaker 7 (01:21:39):
If you got a sixteen fifteen, sixteen, eighteen year old
system and it's been giving you some some issues, it's
time to replace it before you got to go with
the increase pricing January first. And it's not that the
AC companies are raising prices, it's the government change to
regulations on what they can sell. But regardless, if you

(01:22:02):
need a new system where you just need your existing
system serviced, call the best called do West air Conditioning
at seven to one three four seven three seven one
five six.

Speaker 6 (01:22:13):
When Jim Dutton of Texas Home Improvement recommends our company
or our contractor, he won't steer you wrong.

Speaker 7 (01:22:19):
I've got Tim Fox here from Texas Remodel Team. You
guys have a great window division.

Speaker 20 (01:22:24):
Yes, we're not.

Speaker 21 (01:22:25):
Locked into one brand only.

Speaker 20 (01:22:27):
We've got some great vendors that we've had long term
relationships with.

Speaker 7 (01:22:30):
The Installation is what truly makes a difference because you
guys have the remodeling division as well as the window division.
When you go in to do a window job and
there's other wood that ends up showing up, that's got
to be dealt with, you've got people on staff to
do it.

Speaker 21 (01:22:43):
Yeah, for sure, many times you're going to have some
rotten wood leaks in the window. With deciding it might
even have rotten framing.

Speaker 9 (01:22:49):
We want to make sure that if there's.

Speaker 20 (01:22:51):
A problem, you won't have to call another company, have
them come in in the middle of all this and
then price it separately. I can pull in one of
my crews that's an expert in framing, for example. Can
we can keep the project goroll on.

You know, James Hardy siding is the best siding on
the planet. Yes, there are other sidings that may be cheaper,
but you're getting a cheaper product as well. When you
put James Hardy siding on, it's there to stay. It's
going to hold paint better than wood. Or any other
siding on the market, and it's not going to deteriorate
because it's cement based. It doesn't rotten, it doesn't get

(01:23:36):
eaten by rodents and bugs and stuff like that. Uh,
it's just a permanent siding for your structure. So if
you're looking for siding, go take a look at some
James Hardy siding by going to thchipro dot com and
clicking on the link for James Hardisiding.

Speaker 27 (01:23:55):
All Texas the homely place you can experience four in
two days. Merry Christmas from Texas Home Improvement peers, Jim Dutton.

Speaker 7 (01:24:07):
Oh gidea, Hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvement. Seven
one three two one two five eight seven four. That's
seven one three two one two five eight seven four.
Any home home improvement question you have, feel free to
pick up the phone, give me a call and I'll
see what I can do to help you out here

(01:24:28):
on Texas Home Improvement. And since he brought up the
flying thing, yes, I've been re studying my stuff to
take my written test. American Flyer I think that's the
name of the company, has a three day course that
I'm gonna probably go take, just as a refresher, take
the written test, and then I'm ready to complete everything.

(01:24:49):
It's just the time that it takes to to do it,
especially the written test part gets gets pretty extensive, and
I get through the stuff and then I I get
into a time of year where I just don't have
time to continue on. The thing is once I get
finished and start flying, Unlike where a lot of pilots

(01:25:11):
run into problems is they don't fly often enough to
stay proficient. I go back and forth from Houston in
Dallas every week. I will be able to stay proficient
with the flying once I finish and get going, and
my intent would be then to get the IFR ratings

(01:25:33):
as well. So just something I'm working on, and I
thoroughly enjoy it when I'm up flying, because if you've
never gone up in a little airplane, and I know
a lot of people are afraid of going up in
a little airplane, there's nothing like going up in the
big airplanes, your open windows on all sides, to be

(01:25:57):
able to look it's just unbelievable, especially when you get
up just below the clouds, or if you're able to
go through the clouds and up above them. Uh, it's
it's just fun. And yes you can get a little
bumpy sometimes, but the plane's not going anywhere I mean it.
It handles it just fine. Anyways. Seven one three, two

(01:26:21):
one two five eight seven four. We're gonna head out
to Winnie and Joel. This is Jim. How can I
help you?

Speaker 20 (01:26:29):
Jim?

Speaker 23 (01:26:30):
Uh, I've got really hard water at my house and
it's UH every year or two you got to take
the plumbing fixtures loots and scrape out all that build
up in them at all. And I was wondering if
you had any experience with the UH. These water conditioners

(01:26:51):
they sell that they claim will stop that from happening
and even clear up any old UH deposits you've gotten
your pipes.

Speaker 7 (01:27:00):
Well, I actually have a water conditioner like that at
my townhouse in Pasadena. And yes, it helps with moderate water,
water that's already gone through type systems, municipal type water.
But if you got extremely hard water, no, it's not

(01:27:21):
gonna it's not a water softener. What it does is
it helps with the scale build up. So if you
got really hard water with tons of minerals in it,
that's a water softener, and you the the other system
for the scale build up's not gonna not gonna fix that.

Speaker 28 (01:27:42):
Well, I don't know how many grains of hardness I have,
Actually I most untill says im here and winning. Okay,
but everyone everyone complains about it and having to do
I know some friends have to do the same thing
I do, which is clean your fixtures. And sure, but

(01:28:03):
I just didn't know if it would help in that
situation in there an audience act or actually.

Speaker 7 (01:28:09):
They actually do work. And like I say, I've got
it here at my townhouse. And yeah, I was having
the same problem having to clean shower heads and stuff
like that. And since I put it in, no no
problem at all, made a huge difference.

Speaker 23 (01:28:26):
Okay, Well, that's why I wanted to know before I
invested the money.

Speaker 28 (01:28:29):
And it's carible, it's not Keith.

Speaker 7 (01:28:32):
Nope, nope. Well sir, you have a very merry Christmas.

Speaker 23 (01:28:37):
You too, Jim, Thank you very much.

Speaker 7 (01:28:39):
You bet. Okay, Hey, let's talk about concord window film,
because this is a product that you can use for
so many things, obviously sliding glass doors and windows and
stuff like that. But you know, why are you putting
it on windows? Like we put concord window film on
my grandson's room because there was so much sun glare

(01:29:02):
coming in through the window, it toned it down. On
a sliding glass door that you wanting to sit and
look outside, you you want to keep it pretty clear,
so on that one you'd put virtually a clear one.
But if you got a neighbor who likes to look
over the fence and through windows, hey, maybe you want
the dark tint to keep that from happening. Concord Window

(01:29:25):
Film has it all and all of them block up
to ninety nine percent of the sun's UV raised from
coming through, which helps keep the floors good, keep furniture
from fading, and drapes from fading. Things like that. So
get the help you need with it by calling Conquered
Window Film at eight eight eight two zero six one
