I'm here to take your calls and answer questions. So again,
pick up the phone seven one three two one two
five eight seven four and I'll see what I can
(02:51):
do to help you out here on Texas Home Improvement,
your total home improvement source. Uh. And with that being said,
I'm going to kind of start with something on a
personal level here. You know, I'm part of the Passing
Livestock Showing Rodeo. I am currently the president of the
(03:12):
Passing Livestock Showing Rodeo, and we did have an event
today the fun Run, but we had a sad day
with our Rodeo family. One of the past presidents, Jay Hunt,
passed away, and they'll be having funeral services for him
(03:33):
coming up. But Jay and I have known each other
for many years. Actually we met through the Rodeo, but
I knew his parents even longer ago. I knew his
parents way back when I was in high school even
and then I met Jay years later through the Rodeo.
But you know, Jay, as a past president, everybody knew him,
(03:58):
not only was he part of the Passing Livestock Show
on Rodeo, he was part of the Passing a Rotary
Club and you know, uh past president of that in
Pasadena as well. Uh known by many. And uh, can
I say everybody like Jay all the time?
Speaker 8 (04:18):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (04:18):
I mean everybody got along with Jay. Could he get cantankerous?
Speaker 8 (04:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Oh yeah, I mean I get cantankerous as well. And
and he and I could tangle up a little bit
every now and then on difference of opinions. But you
know what, if one of us needed something, we could
call the other one right away and there no no
ill feelings of fact. I remember walking into his store,
Capital Campers there in South Houston a couple of years ago,
(04:46):
and UH was went in to pick up some parts
for my r V and Jay says, uh, are you
here because you saw my email this morning about you?
And I said no, He's well, I roasted you pretty hard,
uh on the e board level. And I said that
that's okay. You're entitled to your opinion. I mean that
(05:08):
that was the way we got along. I didn't I
didn't mind, and and he didn't mind. We we shared
a suite together. Uh at at the rodeo, you know,
to watch the rodeo and stuff, but uh, he will
be definitely missed. He was a big player, uh out
there at the rodeo and and did a lot to
(05:29):
promote and help the Rodeo Association. And uh, you know,
I wish Kim his wife the best. If there's anything
I can do, absolutely let me know. I've sent her
text messages and stuff as well on that, but uh,
you know, it's it. It was a sad day when
(05:51):
when Jay passed away. So let's get back to Texas
Home Improvement seven two one two five eight seven four.
Let's head up to Umble and Darren. This is Jim.
How can I help you?
Speaker 4 (06:05):
Hi, Jim, This is Darren from Humble. I have a
question in regard to a refrigerator, ice maker and water.
The automatic water that comes out of the refrigerator. I
replaced last year a new refrigerator, and the water ice
were working fine, and all of a sudden it slowly
(06:28):
started coming off or not making ice, making half cubes
in the water. Now I had getten no water and
no ice. I replaced the upstairs bathroom faucets and one
of them turns on. There's no water that comes out
of that as well. So I checked this the refrigerator selenoid.
(06:52):
It all works fine, everything's fine, the electric the selenoid
works properly. I turned on the water valve for the
refrigerator and no water comes out. An older house with
feel typing right, so and wondering and it's.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
It's affecting an upstairs faucett as well, and it's not
getting any water or is it trickling up there?
Speaker 4 (07:18):
The upstairs fasted trickles out very very little.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
Okay, you more than likely have a line that is
just playing clogged up.
Speaker 8 (07:31):
Right.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
That's kind of what I thought too.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
So over time, what happens with you know, it's it's
like our arteries, It fills up with sediment and with
you know, different mineral deposits and things like that, and
just literally chokes them off. So there are there's a
(07:54):
system out there that can sam blast through the pipes
and then cope the inside. It's called E pipe. It's
not done a whole lot anymore because typically nowadays people
just replace their lines with pecks when they start having
these kinds of problems. So you got two different ways
that you could address the problem.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
Okay, do you think that if I were to shut
the water off, drain from the city side and drain
all the valves, drain and you know, drain it all
and then turn it back on it and might flush itself. No, no, okay.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
But if you do want to try to do something
to clear it out, I would shut the water off,
open all the valves, and you would have to take
off a valve, take off like that, hook up underneath
it the bathroom sink upstairs, and use an air compressor
to push backwards to try to blow some of the
(08:59):
stuff out. But you have to unhook a pipe to
allow it to exit somewhere. Otherwise you're just gonna clog
everything up again.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
And sort of unhook a pipe. Then where what would
you suggest to unhook where?
Speaker 9 (09:12):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (09:13):
Well, probably down in the kitchen area, since that line
feeding to the refrigerator probably goes up to that bathroom.
So unhooked the line, they'll take the valve off underneath
the kitchen sink and see if you can't blow backwards
on it to free it up. Okay, Yeah, that will
(09:34):
not be a permanent fix, but it may get it
going again for you. And if you can get it going,
you'll want to flush the line out good, to get
as much of the debris out of it as you can.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
Perfect and the company that can come out and do
the sandglassing the cody, Well, you said that's not done
much anymore.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
But there's I think there's still a couple of companies
in town that do it. It's called E pipe. I
don't know which companies do it, but if you just
google E pipe, two of them I think come up.
Speaker 4 (10:08):
Still would it be bad? Would your recommendation be just
to get it read pipe this particular section but not
the whole house?
Speaker 1 (10:19):
Well, you've got galvanized lines, don't you?
Speaker 4 (10:23):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (10:24):
And what year was the house built?
Speaker 4 (10:27):
It must be a thirty year old house at.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
Least, oh, I would if it's got galvanized, it would
be much older than thirty. I would think you're probably
dating for galvanized lines. You're probably going back to the
seventies or earlier, right, And if that's the case that
you do have galvanized lines, I would probably just look
(10:50):
at replacing them because they had an expected life of
about fifty years. And you're probably there.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
I'm right there. Yeah, no water shut off or whatever
it comes out brown and the kitchen, possibly a clog
sometimes with the pediment. So yeah, I think I'm there
now too.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Yeah, if you want to give Due West the call,
we can take care of it for you. We can
take a look at it. It doesn't cost anything to
get a price.

then call us and we'll come back and put the
windows in. Not a Texas Remodel Team. They have a

It ain't gonna fix itself.
Speaker 11 (15:52):
This is Texas Home Improvement with Jim Dutton.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
Ah, welcome back to Texas Home and Movements. Your total
home improvements so or seven one three two one two
five eight seven four. That's seven one three two one
two five eight seven four. And I'll see what I
can do to help you out here on Texas Home Improvement.
Let's see, hej This is Jim. How can I help you?
Speaker 10 (16:20):
Hi, Jim, thank you for taking my call and help
me out. I have a ten x ten shed in
the backyard under a tree, so it doesn't get very hot,
but during summer it's still it gets pretty warm. We're
in Texas, so I was thinking about putting pegboard, but
(16:42):
before putting the back pet boards, I was thinking about
putting some kind of insulation to prevent to reduce the
amount of heat transfer from outside to inside to shed
because there are just two small events. So I was
looking at stuts our sixteen inch part and I was
(17:03):
debating to use those foam boards with the shiny side,
pink colored foam board with the shiny side there was
one consideration, and the second consideration was fiberglass insulation does
come in a role fifteen inch wide, staple them and
then put the pegboard inside.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
What would be your weaponmend.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Are you gonna heat and coolest or you just trying.
Speaker 10 (17:24):
To load just chulated, just lower the temperature the winter,
I don't care because I usually don't work in there. Yeah,
it's primarily for storage, but in summer it gets kind
of humid inside even though it's under the tree, but
still it gets hot and humid. Sure, so trying to
(17:44):
save my tools and equipment from too much temperature change,
that's primary considerate.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
And you said it is in under a shade tree,
so it's already shaded.
Speaker 8 (17:56):
It's already shaded.
Speaker 10 (17:57):
But again the tree make get cut down in a
few years, looking like she is dying. So I will
think of something more long term.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
Okay, And the read I'm asking these questions. If it
was out in the sun, I would tell you use
a radiant barrier. There's a product called energy Q radiant
barrier and that typically will lower the temperature like ten
fifteen degrees in there, and you don't have to run
(18:26):
anything if you put insulation in it. It's gonna make
your problem worse because the insulation, especially if we start
getting you know, high humidity and stuff, it'll hold that
moisture and literally starts to cause wood decay and stuff
like that. So you don't want to put fiberglass insulation
(18:47):
in there. The styrofoam. If you were gonna heat and
cool it, it would help. But unless you're gonna heat
and cool it, you're gonna be spinning your wheels with
anything other than a radiant barrier. So take a look
at that Energy Q and literally their web addresses energy
(19:11):
the letter Q dot com. You can call them and
talk to Mark Delgatto if you want to all kinds
of information. Their number is one eight hundred nine hundred
sixty two twenty. But like I said, unless you're gonna
eat and cool it, you want to be very careful
what you put into the walls.
Speaker 5 (19:31):
There.
Speaker 10 (19:33):
No, that was the main reason that to consult with you,
because I'm not an I've heard the Energy Q on
your show multiple times, so just another quick question.
Speaker 1 (19:43):
So, well, this.
Speaker 10 (19:44):
Energy Q will be put on the walls or on
the ceiling, or just.
Speaker 12 (19:49):
On the ceiling, both walls and ceiling, Okay, And once
I call them, they will be able to give me
better idea, like exactly what do I need to buy in?
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Yeah? It comes in a in a roll.
Speaker 7 (20:04):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
It covers a I think a thousand square feet each
role does. It's four foot wide and you literally would
just run it across there, staple it on and then
you can put the peg board on over it.
Speaker 10 (20:15):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
I've got a shed at my house that I've got
it in and it made a world of difference when
I put that in there.
Speaker 10 (20:23):
And it comes with the instructions like which side faces
inside outside all that stuff.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
Yep, okay, all right.
Speaker 10 (20:31):
No, I'll give them a call and get more details
from there, and if I have any other question next Saturday,
you'll hear back.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
From me already.
Speaker 10 (20:39):
That sounds good, all right, thank you very much, appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
Thank you sir, And again our number seven one three
two one two five eight seven four. That's seven one
three two one two five eight seven four. Any home
improven question you have, pick up the phone, give me
a call and I'll see what I can do to
help you out here on Texas Home Improvement. Also, again,
(21:04):
don't forget about our website t hi pro dot com
there's all kinds of helpful information there, links to the
people you hear me talk about, questions and answers. I mean,
it's just a wealth of information. When you go to
t hipro dot com and you know, one of the
things that you'll find is a link for our podcast.
(21:27):
Start listening to the podcast, you'll hear other stuff there
that you don't hear on the show itself. So it's
just a little added benefit there. And we update it
once a week so it's you know, it's always being
kept current for you. Got to take a quick break
for news, traffic, and weather. We'll be back with more
Texas home improvement minute. Hey, let's talk real quick about
(22:08):
American Standard. If you're thinking about an air conditioning system
for your home, you need to take a look at
American Standard systems. You know, they're nationally recognized for excellence.
I've used them in my personal homes since nineteen ninety nine,
and I got to tell you I love my American
Standard systems. They can take care of your family all
(22:29):
year long with American Standard air and American Standard technology
meets you ever change in Texas weather head on, so
keep your home cool and humidity for your be ready
for a little heat when you need it. Invest wisely
and invest in the home comfort system that will last
y'all long, long time comfort the way you like it.
That's American standardair dot com. And when you're taking a
(22:53):
look at it, make sure that that American standard heating
and air conditioning system you're looking at is either a
dual speed or variable speed that gives you ultimate humidity control.
I've had the single speed, loved it, but I really
like that variable.
Speaker 11 (23:21):
Just listening to the show will make your property value
you go up. Here's Jim Dutton on Texas Home Improvement.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
Hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvements. Your total home
improvement source seven one three two one two five eight
seven four. That's number to call seven one three two
one two five eight seven four. I've got all open
lines right now, So pick up the phone, give me
a call, and let's talk some home improvement here on
Texas Home Improvement. And you guys picked the subject by
(23:51):
picking up the phone and giving me a call. So
again seven one three two one two five eight and
seven four and with animal head into an email question.
This comes from Calvin and Humbelney says, I have a
backyard that stays wet. I've had sprinkler system person tell
me that no valves are leaking. It has a shower
(24:14):
that is just inside the exterior wall. I dug down
about two foot and the clay is wet beside the foundation.
I'm wondering if the shower drain line is leaking. Is
there any detection equipment to check for leaks? Thanks, Actually, yes,
there is, Calvin. What you do is what's called a
(24:37):
static test, and a static test is you can call
a static or hydrostatic. But basically what they do is
where the sewer line exits the house, they'll put a
test ball down in there to plug the system, fill
the entire sewer system with water and fill it up
(24:57):
to the level of the slab and let it sit
for fifteen twenty minutes and see if there's any drop.
If there's a drop, then you can do what's called
an isolation test to locate exactly where it's leaking and
get that taken care of. If it doesn't drop, though,
you got no leaks in the sewer lines. Now on
(25:18):
the pottable water, you know the water coming in. If
there's a leak there, you typically are going to know
it because one you're using a whole lot of water.
Two a lot of times you can hear it kind
of humming through the house, and normally it'll saturate the
soil so heavily that there's no question you got a leak.
(25:39):
And of course you're going to see that in your
water bills. So now if you're not seeing it in
the water bill and you want to verify it, a
pressure test can be set up on the water system. Basically,
you shut the water off, put a gauge on one
of the hose bibs, and fill it with air, pressure
(26:00):
it up and see if it holds. Or the simpler
way to do it, if you still have one of
the old gauges that have the spin dials on it,
shut all the water off inside the home, shut the
valves off to the toilets in the in the uh,
refrigerator and all that kind of stuff, and see if
that little valve is spinning. If it is, hey you
(26:23):
got a leak. If it's not, everything is fine. UH.
So that'll give you two ways of double check and stuff.
Got a question seven one three, two one two five
eight seven four. That's seven one three, two one two
five eight seven four and I'll see what I can
do to help you out here on Texas Home Improvement. Again,
(26:46):
don't forget about our website t hipro dot com. It
is there as a resource to help you out twenty
four to seven. So anytime you're thinking about a project
or uh, you know, worried about a project, just just
thchipro dot com and I'm gonna jump into another email question. Okay,
(27:13):
this comes from Stephen in League City says to get
the LA water supply from the east side of the
mountains to the west side takes twelve pumps with a
total of seventy two thousand horsepower. Please think about that
as you try to save a lot on AC systems.
(27:35):
I get it, And this is coming because we were
talking about some energy saving stuff on air conditioning systems.
But if none of us tried to get any energy
efficiency out of anything, how much power would we have
to generate? Then? You know, it always amuses me when
(27:58):
people try to narrow it down a while. This guy's
wasting power. Well, we need water. If you've got a
better solution than running those pumps to get the water
through the mountains of LA, I'm sure they would love
to hear it, but otherwise those pumps gotta go. So
you know, sometimes sometimes we just have to accept that
(28:23):
there are some things that we're not gonna save energy on.
And who knows that may be the energy efficient pumps.
If they weren't using an energy efficient pump, it could
be that the stupid thing would be cranking out one
hundred and twenty thousand watts of power to run it.
So I don't know enough about that to give an
intelligent answer on it, but I do know this. They
(28:46):
got to have the water, so one way or the other,
you got to get it over there. Leroy Andmoarton. This
is Jim. How can I help you?
Speaker 5 (28:56):
Thank Jim? This is we were hey, I to get
some information. You were talking to someone just a call
to for about a radiant barrier. Yes, you're going to
do something to try to cool or keep these temperature
in the storage building.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
Down in the shed, yes, sir, and I see.
Speaker 5 (29:17):
Okay, Now you were saying something about install it over
the window or something like that, like a screen or
something or what.
Speaker 1 (29:28):
No, no, no, over the studs. You can just put
it on the wall staplet to the studs and what
basically what it does is it blocks the heat from
coming into your shed. You know what a radiant barrier does.
Insulation has an OUR value and the R value is
(29:50):
the resistance how long it's going to take heat basically
to travel through it. When you deal with radiant barriers
and and the windows and stuff like that, they have
an E value. And basically the way a radium barrier
works is it's measured by how much heat it blocks
(30:12):
from going through it. And like a foil type, radiant
barrier will block up to ninety seven percent of the
heat from going through it. Doesn't say it's not going
to let some heat through, but it definitely makes a
huge difference.
Speaker 5 (30:30):
Okay. So so basically you just want to take your
if you let's say you got a middle storage building,
right there is a frame for that building, and you say,
put the installed the radium bearer on the step, correct, okay,
(30:50):
And well if you say it's the wooden building, same thing.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
Just same thing. Now you know, if you're building it new,
you can put it on the outside and then the
side of the studs and then the siding goes on
over it. But when it's already built, just put it
on the studs on the inside. Uh and it and
it works great.
Speaker 5 (31:09):
Okay, Yeah, I'm building up.
Speaker 1 (31:11):

Hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvements. Your total home
Improvement source seven one three two one two five eight
seven four. That's seven one three two one two five
eight seven four. Any home improvement question you have, pick
up the phone, give me a call and I'll see
(34:58):
what I can do to out here on Texas Home Improvement.
And let's see here I'm going to jump into another
email question. Glenn has a question. He says, UH, recommendation
for electricians. Please advise electricians to do installation for outside
(35:22):
connection box to plug generator output to also to install
a line and surge filter before power from the generator
enters the house. Uh. Look not only for the generators
but for your main power lines coming into the house.
I would highly recommend you get surge protectors as well.
(35:43):
But call Right Touch Electrical. They can help you with
all those items you were just talking about. And a
Right Touch Electrical is two eight one six four five
five five two six. That's two eight one six four
five five five two six. Give them a call. And
you know, so often we try to do stuff ourselves
(36:07):
that and some of it we just shouldn't do electrical
as one of them that I just don't typically mess
with myself, so uh yeah, definitely, I would uh call
Right Touch Electrical. I use them for the office work, homework,
and even when we're doing projects where we have to
(36:30):
have an outlet installed or something for like exhaust fans
underneath the crawl space and things like that, we call
Right Touch Electrical because I know those guys are going
to do it right. Uh again, seven one three two
one two five eight is seven four. Any home improvement
question you have, pick up the phone, give me a call,
(36:50):
and I'll see what I can do to help you
out here on Texas Home Improvement. That's seven one three
two one two five eight is seven four. And to
see I'm gonna jump into another question here looking for
looking for good someone to help with chimney cap replacement.
(37:13):
I have fabricator. Okay, So you're just wanting somebody to
do the labor part. You know, typically you got two
people that you can call for doing this. One would
be a brick mason if it's a brick fireplace. The
other would be a roofing contractor a lot of them
put the chimney caps on. Now the problem you're gonna
(37:36):
run into is a lot of them are gonna want
to get the chimney cap made themselves so that they
can make sure it fits properly and all that kind
of stuff, and bluntly so they can make a couple
dollars off of it. You know, we think we're gonna
buy these materials ourselves because we can buy it for
so much less, and then we're gonna save money. But
(37:57):
keep in mind, if somebody's coming out to put a
chimney cap on, for instance, it doesn't take very long.
It's a minimal job. They got to charge enough to
cover their expenses, the drive out there, the labor to
put it on, uh, and all those kind of expenses
that whether you had the cap made or they did uh.
(38:20):
You know, they got to make x amount of dollars
to justify doing the job. So in a lot of
these cases where it's something small like that, let the
contractor take care of it, because otherwise it's going to
charge you anyways. Seven two one two five eight seven
four Raphael in a leaf, How can I help you?
Speaker 7 (38:44):
We want to put a wire on our gutters, and
we're wondering that we've heard about Amazon selling wire at
three feet and then I have a handyman who can
put it on. Have you heard of the It's the
first time we've ever heard that we could buy a
wire to keep the leaves out. Do you have any
(39:06):
any advice or any tips on this particular situation.
Speaker 1 (39:11):
I have not heard of a wire to keep the
leaves out.
Speaker 8 (39:15):
Well.
Speaker 7 (39:16):
Uh a screen screen?
Speaker 1 (39:19):
Oh, a screen okay, yeah, definitely, Yeah. There there's different
screens available that are caps to go on. Uh. There
are other products as well. I will tell you the
one that I have typically used is called gutter Max.
I'm sorry, that's the gutter company leaf Guard.
Speaker 7 (39:44):
Oh yeah, let me Yeah, but I mean, do you
have to finish the sentence of.
Speaker 1 (39:50):
Nope, nope, go ahead?
Speaker 7 (39:52):
Would I cut you off?
Speaker 1 (39:54):
No? No, You're good that.
Speaker 7 (39:57):
Uh, but we're trying to say, uh, our handyman can
do it. We have supposedly and uh and he says
he gets them at Amazon at three feet. Oh, but
you're just saying leaf guard, that's all that's the.
Speaker 1 (40:13):
Perfect But yeah, I mean you can definitely let them
put some of those on and and and it'll it'll
work just fine. Now. One of the things you have
to look at, though, is what type of uh, leaves
and stuff are you dealing with, because you know, sometimes
people are dealing with pine needles and some of the
(40:34):
stuff doesn't work as well on pine needles as it
does on say, leaves from an oak tree.
Speaker 7 (40:40):
Well, we don't have that, so that's good, okay, but okay,
anything else. I just wanted to pass it by you
was I'm so glad there's another option. I I always
I know that leaf guard is probably expensive, and they
got a beautiful product and it's a lifetime guarante. Oh yeah,
(41:00):
and have you ever put it on one of your houses.
Speaker 1 (41:04):
I have used products like that before, but yeah, no,
I don't know. And I'm sorry that music man, I
was supposed to take a break. I'm gonna have to

metal piece that the brick, sits on and when it
starts sagging a, little bit you'll get a droop in,
the middle so it looks like your overhead door is smiling.

i know the livestock Show and rodeo has, taking place but,
you know pick up, the phone give me a call
and let's talk about your home improvement issues here again
seven one three two one two five eight. Seven four
(50:10):
with all that, Being said i'm going to jump back
into an email question here and there. We go christine
sent in an email about. Termite treatments we've Had termin
(50:31):
x under contract since we purchased our home in two thousand.
And Six last september we had damage in are WHICH
termin X treated i know that's not, written right but
and repaired the wall in cabinet involved damage just popped
up again in the same area AND termin x will
treat and. Repair again now they recommend the bait traps
(50:54):
for Eighteen hundred is it? WORTH it i am completely
confused and certainly do not want to keep repairing. Our,
home well what the bait traps do is they actually
typically are a type of wood that the, termites like
so it attracts it to, them quicker and so it
tells them that termites in the area and they can
(51:15):
treat it before it becomes an issue with. The house
so are? They, good yes but you've already got a
warranty WITH termin x and if it's in their best
interest to put, those in then they ought to be
putting them in and say themselves having to rebuild your
home time and. Time AGAIN so I think i would
(51:37):
have the conversation with them, that hey if this is
going to limit what you got to repair on, my
house go ahead and put, Them in but why are
you trying to charge me?
Speaker 6 (51:47):
For it.
Speaker 1 (51:50):
Just my two cents? On it, and yes termites are problem,
every year, you know with them coming around and, they
swarm not that we're swarming yet, this year, but uh
people question whether they should get uh termite control from
these big companies over stuff. Like that, but look they're standing,
(52:14):
behind it they are taking care. Of it so often
you hear people get the smaller companies and they won't
offer that same type, of warranty don't stand. Behind it
so stick with the big guys on that type, OF
situation uh TERMIN. X orcin those are the ones who
are typically going to stand behind what they're. Having done
(52:39):
got a question seven, one, three two one two five
eight Seven four byron, In spring HOW can i?
Speaker 8 (52:46):
Help? YOU yes i was trying to get a good
feel about what it would cause to have my old
tub taken out in a basically a. Walking shower and what?
HAD me, I said i had one company. COME out
i won't say the name, of it but they would
tell they gave me a quota of twenty. Three thousands
(53:07):
that would seemed ridiculous, to me, YOU know i, you
know BUT again i don't have any good frame of reference.
Speaker 1 (53:14):
To go off. By sure and when when they, came
out were they strictly do in the shower and? Nothing?
Speaker 8 (53:24):
Else right all they were gonna do, They go it's
like one of these one. Day repairs, See rite they
tell me to take the old, tub out take the,
you know go down to the to the.
Speaker 1 (53:37):
Stud, board yep right to.
Speaker 8 (53:39):
The studs and then the ONLY way i can see
justifying something, like that they weren't even talking like putting,
real marbles like some. Cheap thing and it JUST seems i,
don't Know maybe, i'm wrong but that does seemed extremely high.
Speaker 1 (53:54):
To, ME well i will tell you that a cheap
one is like, twelve Thousand and i'm talking, really cheap
so a lot of them are in the fifteen to.
Twenty range twenty three does seem like it's a bit
on the, HIGH.
Speaker 8 (54:07):
Side, I mean and what do you get? BY that
i mean, they said, you know are they put in in,
you know the material looks, like marble but it's.
Speaker 1 (54:19):
It's right it's a it's a man, made material, you.
Know synthetic they hold up extremely well so that that
typically is not a. Big issue but, you know it's
just unbelievably expensive to do that, stuff NOW and i
(54:39):
think it's a lot of it has to do With
their there are really high profit margins, in it but
the cost of doing business has just gone through. The
Roof as as, an example, you know, a company whether
they make money or Not, in texas is paying. Franchise
tax and everybody, always, says, oh well we don't have
(55:02):
a income Tax. In texas the heck. We don't when
you pay that, franchise tax you're just paying it based
on the money that you made. That year individuals don't happen,
income tax but. Businesses do the insurance has just gone
through the roof on the cost of, vehicle insurance, general
(55:24):
liability and things. Like that and every time the government,
adds regulations it raises the cost. Of Everything and i'll
tell you right now THAT and i wholeheartedly support what
we're doing as far as closing the borders and deporting,
the legals especially all the ones that are criminals and all,
(55:46):
that stuff but we all need to. Be prepared that
is going to raise the cost, of labor which is
going to raise the cost of remodeling. And stuff so
everything we do. Has consequences, All.
Speaker 8 (56:00):
RIGHT well i, appreciate it BUT like, i said it
just seemed kind of high to.
Speaker 1 (56:04):
The end it is on the, high side but it
is in the realm of what they're charging nowadays.
Speaker 8 (56:10):
For, that okay, all, RIGHT well i appreciate.
Speaker 1 (56:14):
The feedback you bet. Take care and you know At,
due west, YOU know i know there's the big push
as Far as american vehicles and manufacturing and all that kind.
OF stuff i will Tell You Due west we've been
in business since nineteen. Seventy eight we have never owned a.
(56:37):
Foreign vehicle to, this day when we, buy vehicles It's
always american made and not just the manufacturer is In The.
United states we still stick With the, american brands, You, Know,
ford chevy that that type. Of situation so just my
two cents. On that, Let's see i'm GONE. In sayerus
(57:03):
HOW can i?
Speaker 16 (57:03):
Help, You, Okay well i'm building a new home for
my daughter in son. Of law huh and the air
conditioning Guy that i've used for the last. Thirty years
i'm not a builder, by Trade but i've built, several
homes but we Put in boss twenty three air conditioning
(57:24):
units one five and. TWO threes i know they make.
Good Dishwashers just. I'm driving just want to see what
your opinion Was of bosh air conditions if you. Had, One.
Speaker 1 (57:37):
Well bosh has actually been in the air conditioning business
for a. Long time we just haven't used them extensively
In The. United states But in europe they've been in
air conditioning for a. Long time but you're put in
a five ton and two.
Speaker 16 (57:51):
Three, tons yeah it's, the oh the house of about
fifty one hundred.
Speaker 17 (57:55):
Square feet it's.
Speaker 16 (57:56):
A, big, Home okay, so yeah that's what they've already put.
Them in, well okay working on the, inside now trimming,
it out.
Speaker 1 (58:07):
So yeah, you, KNOW yeah i would not worry a
bit about. The. Brand uh bosh is a, good brand
a good company that stands behind their their equipment. Very
WELL so i don't think you'll have anything to worry about, On, that.
Speaker 16 (58:26):
Okay, all right well thanks for taking, my call just
wanting to get. An, opinion know think you bet not.
Speaker 1 (58:32):
A problem we'll. Take Care, YEAH bosh i mean we
we Think of bosh, over here But, In europe bosh
is huge and, you know and they're into the appliance
industry Over in europe. Quite extensively but on the air, conditioning,
side yeah they've been doing it for for a long
(58:53):
time over there. As well again our number seven, one,
three two, one, two five eight, seven four it's head
Up to Humble. And ray Welcome To Texas. Home improvement
by how, You, Doing jim i'm doing WONDERFUL and i appreciate.
Speaker 18 (59:08):

on search protectors for the. Whole house what do you
think about putting in a search protector for your home
and what would?
Speaker 9 (59:20):
YOU recommend.
Speaker 1 (59:23):
I will Tell you i'm getting ready to have one
put into my personal home because what was it? LAST
week I guess i had. A, storm well it wasn't really,
a storm were just a little rain shower and our.
Power flashed it, went off, back, on off, back on
(59:43):
did that about three times real quick in a series,
like that and it blew out the circuit board on
my air conditioner and the digital thermostat you know that
looks like an iPad on. The wall had to have
both those items replaced because of that power surge from
(01:00:04):
the power just flashing. That way, So yeah i'm the
search protectors are relatively inexpensive to. HAVE installed i would
recommend doing a whole house one versus each. Separate appliance
and if you ask me how well they're, GONNA work
I truthfully i, don't Know because i've never, used One
(01:00:26):
but i'm darn you're going to have one put, In, now.
Speaker 18 (01:00:29):
Yes, sir, Yes sir THAT'S what i, was, thinking because
like you were saying last couple of, weeks back we've
had the same issue with the lights flashing on, and off,
and uh, you know we got the little individual ones
owned that you plug into the wall and then you
plug your appliances.
Speaker 8 (01:00:43):
Into.
Speaker 18 (01:00:43):
It YEP but i, was, THINKING yeah i was thinking
about just having a, you know one at the, breaker
box and it will also protect the air conditioning, unity,
stating yeah if you, get one that's a.
Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
Whole house it's protecting everything that has A.
Speaker 18 (01:00:58):
Breaker, Okay okay and what's the cost you think running
roughly should be for something.
Speaker 1 (01:01:05):
Like that, You know i've only just begun looking, at
it but The ones i've looked at are not. TERRIBLY expensive,
i mean the unit themselves is in the hundreds and
then the electrician to, install them so you're typically looking
at something less than.
Speaker 18 (01:01:25):
Two, thousand, okay okay, All RIGHT and I know i kind,
of googled, you know about it a little bit and read,
about them, but THEY'RE like, i said there's, you know
thirty amp ones or fifty amp or sixty or whatever the,
you know little device is the breaker. Or, Whatever Right
and i've just been wondering if.
Speaker 9 (01:01:43):
What size you.
Speaker 18 (01:01:44):
WOULD need i guess the electrician will let you know
what size you might need For.
Speaker 1 (01:01:48):
YOUR yeah i mean most houses have either one hundred
damp or a two hundred damp service coming. Into, them
yeah and the electrician can look at your panel and
see how many amps, you're running and that that when
you do in a. Whole house that's what you got
to get is one that's capable of doing the.
Speaker 18 (01:02:05):
Whole, thing okay, All RIGHT and i NOTICED our ac
unit outside has its own little cutoff breaker, quote, it,
Yes sir so it also protect that you're you're saying
when they put it into the main. Breaker, Yep okay well,
all right.
Speaker 1 (01:02:23):
THAT'S what i was needing.
Speaker 18 (01:02:24):
To Know and i'm gonna start calling around, SOME electricians,
i guess and get their little have them come out
and give.
Speaker 8 (01:02:30):
A quote.
Speaker 1 (01:02:32):
Right touch electrical call, right.
Speaker 18 (01:02:35):

ron HOW can i? Help?
Speaker 17 (01:07:07):
You, Well, hello jim thanker taking. My call i'm hoping
this might be a. QUICK question i won't go through a,
long History but i've got a terrible problem with my
ill conditioning and. HEATING system i got a house that
was built in the thirties when my WIFE and i
bought it thirty. Years ago it's got a heat pump
(01:07:29):
that's generating the cold in. The heat but lately it's
just become a disaster with trying to get that thing
thick and actually having my heating company re routing all
kinds of. Duct work do you have a general opinion
on whether or not it's worth keeping a heat pump
(01:07:50):
in a house that was built in.
Speaker 1 (01:07:52):
The, thirties absolutely. IT is a heat pump will operate
when you're running heat typically only uses about a third
of the electricity of a standard. Strip heat so, understand
though the only time you're making that kind of savings
(01:08:14):
is in the winter months when you're actually running. The
heat in, the summer when you're running, air conditioning there
is no savings. For, it.
Speaker 17 (01:08:23):
Yeah and then let's go ahead and realize That in
houston it's mostly the. Summer year the summer months a.
Speaker 1 (01:08:30):
Year, long, yeah well let's, be real our summer's only
run eleven months and three weeks out of.
Speaker 9 (01:08:39):
The year, You funny.
Speaker 1 (01:08:43):
So did you say your system is thirty?
Speaker 17 (01:08:45):
Years old though it gotta BE because i moved into
this house thirty. Years, ago okay we did replace the heat,
pump itself and we have rewired the, ducks work but there's.
Speaker 4 (01:08:58):
Just real issues.
Speaker 17 (01:09:00):
The summertime it does a great job. Of, cooling yeah
tough time keeping things warm in.
Speaker 1 (01:09:07):
The, winter well the heat pumps from thirty, years AGO
and i know you replaced it, since then but the
older heat pumps are nowhere's near as good as the
new ones out there, right now and that could be
where some of your problem is and just playing the age.
Of it, so yeah you may want to consider taking
(01:09:31):
a Look at you're getting near time to probably replace
the whole system if it's thirty. Years, old yeah we're all.
Speaker 17 (01:09:39):
Getting older.
Speaker 1 (01:09:42):
Thank, You sir, all right. Bye bye, YOU Know usa

See virgil This Is jim Welcome To Texas. Home Improvement.
Speaker 13 (01:11:10):
Hey, jim uh the water department IS saying i have
a leak at. My house my water bill went up
from like forty dollars a month to close to. Five
HUNDRED and i told them, about it and they claim
that it's not on, their.
Speaker 4 (01:11:27):
End it's on.
Speaker 13 (01:11:28):
My END but i don't see any water leaking anywhere
around my house and all of my toilets and other
fixtures is not. Leaking anything AND what i need to
find out is. There's somebody so they TOLD me i
had to call.

to help me out.

Do that you can reach us at seven one three
four seven, three, seven one, five six, and, uh yeah
(01:12:14):

Speaker 8 (01:12:24):
You.
Speaker 1 (01:12:25):
Up yeah what what all do.
Speaker 5 (01:12:27):
They normally have?
Speaker 13 (01:12:28):
TO do, I mean i don't understand any of any.
Speaker 4 (01:12:30):
OF that i was.
Speaker 13 (01:12:31):
Just curious do they have to put some kind, of
pressure or do they dig the yard up or what do?
Speaker 1 (01:12:37):
They, Do well it'll depend on what. THEY find, i
mean one of the things that they can do, is,
is uh shut everything off in, the house shut all
the valves off in that and put a pressure in
the pipes to fill it up and see if. It
holds and that'll tell if there's a leak in. The
(01:12:57):
lines no leak in. The lines now we can start
checking from the meter to, the house make sure the
yard line is. Still good then you start having to check,
the appliances, you know the toilets and the different things,
like that because even though you don't see it running on,
a toilet a little bit of bypass through the like
(01:13:21):
the pop off or not the Pop off, i'm sorry
through the tank where the flapper is just a little
bit of bypass there adds.
Speaker 13 (01:13:32):
Up, quick, OKAY okay i really, Appreciate, IT jim i
thank you for, your Help and i'll.
Speaker 4 (01:13:39):
Call them i'll Call them.
Speaker 1 (01:13:41):
Monday Now and i'm gonna just give you a little
tip here that you may want to try on your
own before you even, call us because what you described
would not surprise me if it was not bypassing in.
The toilet and one of the ways you can check
that real quick is just leave the toilet the way,
it is, you know water on, and everything drop some
(01:14:04):
food color into the, toilet bowl into the, tank, rather
yeah and watch and see if it starts making its
way into. The bowl if, it does your.
Speaker 14 (01:14:15):
Flappers, leaking, okay, HI brother i really appreciate.
Speaker 13 (01:14:20):
Your help, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 1 (01:14:23):
Bye bye, and honestly that is a pretty commonplace to have.
An issue but the other commonplace is that. Yard. Line,
now normally when it gets, bad enough you will start
seeing water coming up somewhere in. The, yard uh not necessarily,
(01:14:44):
coming up but you hit a, wet spot so uh,
beyond that it's just a matter of hunting. Them down.
You know sometimes people, will, say, WELL yeah i just
got this little drip in, the, bathtub well that little
drip adds up quick and that's where we start having major.
Issues again if you got a question seven one three

a Call and i'll SEE what i can do to

got an email question in get back over to it
(01:22:07):
here that ABOUT. Energy q this Came from john and,
He says i'm replacing. MY roof i asked the roofer
about installing THE energy q under the. New shingles the
roofer didn't think it would be. Cost effective. YOUR thoughts
i don't know what kind of antique roofer you got
working on, your place but radiant barriers are extremely, cost
(01:22:29):
effective and THE energy q actually is one of the
most cost Effective things i've ever seen. In general if
you put THE energy q in, your attic in, most
cases it pays for itself in a matter, of months.
Not years how many other home improvement items, do that
(01:22:50):
not most, Of them i'll tell. You that and the
way THE energy q works is it's a multi layer
system with a thermal break in, the middle so it's
he's got the aluminum on. Both sides the thermal break
in the middle keeps the two aluminum pieces. From touching
it's designed to stop the, heat transfer so if it's under,
the shingles it's stopping the heat from going into the.
(01:23:12):
Living space if you're building, new construction you can put
it behind sheet rock for the. Same effect, so no
your your roofer is wrong. On that and at the,
same time he's probably trying to sell you. The plywood
it's got the single ply illuminum on one side for,
your attic but he thinks that's going to be. Cost
effective let's let's run the numbers. On, that no it don't,
(01:23:36):
work out, so no he's just he's just not used to,
the product doesn't know, the product and is giving you
a line so he doesn't have to deal with. The product,
All right you got a question seven one, three two
one two five eight. Seven four that's seven, one, three two,
(01:23:57):
one two five eight seven four any home improven question.
You have pick up, the phone give me a Call

(01:24:21):
Is jim HOW can i? Help?
Speaker 3 (01:24:22):
You hie thank you for taking.
Speaker 1 (01:24:25):
My call hik my. Pleasure.
Speaker 3 (01:24:27):
CAT sorry i have four CATS and i have a
backyard that is like about ten by twenty to attended.
BY twenty i was wondering if you, put that advise
me ON how i can make the yard so that
the cats do not jump out into the. Neighbor's.
Speaker 5 (01:24:46):
Yard ten it's a, wooden, fence.
Speaker 17 (01:24:51):
YEAH and i don't know how to go.
Speaker 1 (01:24:53):
About, it well keeping cats in is uh is tough because,
you know you could put a twelve foot fence there
and they're still going to be able to climb. Over.
It uh the only way you can really start keeping
them in is on the inside of. That fence you
end up using a wire system so that they can't climb.
(01:25:17):
Up it and what that entails is wires that are
going from top down so that they can't reach into.
The wood but if you got, you know if you
use like a cross grid where it's four inch by four,
inch squares they're still able to. Climb it so it's
(01:25:38):

On Texas. Home improvement let's. See Here so connie sends
me An email my home is on. Peerm beam we
have enormous issues with our. Only shower somehow water creeps
(01:26:33):
up under the tile floor and wets the, adjacent floor
which is wood original to. The house on the underside
bottom of. The floor it is noticeable with darkening of.
The wood we know we must address this problem as soon.
As possible we live in a rural area and finding
(01:26:54):
help is. Extremely difficult we may have to do. It
ourselves is there a particular method of construction with a
shower in a home of? This kind plumbers cannot find
any leaks under. The house my guess is it's not under.
The house it can be where the uh drain pipe
(01:27:19):
comes through the floor of. The shower there's a nut
there that has to. Be tightened it's it's got a
rubber gasket within it that as you tighten the nut compresses,
that Gasket and i'm guessing that is one of the
areas where it. Can be another area is it may
not be in the drain system. At all it can
(01:27:39):
be in the. Water supply there's a lot of showers
that when they people start having problems. With them when
the valve is on the pipe going up to the
shower head is. What's, leaking well it runs down on
the inside wall down to the floor, down there and
that's where it's getting wet from several things that could be.
(01:28:01):
Causing it the first trick is going to be finding
out exactly where the leak is and getting that taken.
Care of, you know is as far as somebody out
there that can. Do IT unfortunately i don't know anybody
in your area that can. Do that, but yes you
(01:28:22):
definitely need to get it taken, care of and it
may require somebody coming in and doing. Leak detection give
the folks Over At American leak detectors a call and
see if they have somebody in that area who can
hunt down the leak, for you because they're they're pretty good.
At that, all right we're getting ready to take. A

they've put the the condensing unit outside it three and a. Half,
tons Okay maybe I'm not does that sound?

About right how many square feet did you say the?
House is?
Speaker 9 (01:33:10):
TWENTY seven.
Speaker 1 (01:33:14):
I would definitely have to see the load calculations on,
that one, because yeah that's that sounds three and a,
half tons sounds.
Speaker 4 (01:33:20):
Very, light yeah That's.
Speaker 5 (01:33:22):
What i'm kind of.
Speaker 9 (01:33:23):
Thinking too i've asked the, builder to, you know get
with THE h vac contractor again that check these calculations,
BECAUSE it i, don't know it seems a little.
Speaker 19 (01:33:36):
Bit light, to me but.
Speaker 9 (01:33:39):
So, you think just check the. Load Calculation it's atlantic
and at EIGHTEEN seer i think they.
Speaker 1 (01:33:46):
Said, so yeah but, you know the brand And the
seer rating and all that really won't Play into it
is strictly a, tonage question and the old rule of
thumb was five hundred square feet. Per ton now we're
building homes a whole lot more, energy efficient so that's
been able to be extended. Up higher but twenty three
(01:34:08):
and a half doesn't. SOUND right i would ask for
the the heat load calculation on. That one and there
are heatload calculating engineers who could review that for you
before you sign off.
Speaker 19 (01:34:21):
On, it okay and there it DOES have i, don't
know you know the, radio barrier, you know grouping and.
Speaker 1 (01:34:32):

far you still have to have enough to cover the.
