I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing. And I don't
mean it, you know, for her because she had me

(03:14):
and all that kind of stuff. Uh. My mom and
I would work together on projects when they had rent
houses when I was young, uh you know, thirteen fourteen,
fifteen years old, and that's where I got my start
in construction. Loved doing projects like that. Knew when I
was in high school I was going to be a contractor.

(03:36):
And it's because of working with my mom on those projects.
So happy birthday Mom. Now again, if you got a question,
seven one three two one two five eight seven four,

(03:57):
straight into some calls as soon as I can get
my mouse mood. There we go, Beth, this is Jim.
How can I help you?

Speaker 7 (04:05):
Hi, mister Dutton. I hope you're having a good day.
We have slate on our patio and little outdoor kitchen
area which is by a pool, and it has gotten dull.
We've had it repaired before with you know, something put
on it to bring out the shine. We were wondering
if it looked like it was a do it yourself project,
and I was wondering, what should we use to you know,

(04:29):
code it but yet not have it slippery.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
You are correct, it isn't a nice do it yourself
project because you can just basically roll the stuff on there.
You have to clean it up good. But if you'll
go over to floor and decre they can show there. Yeah.
They they've got products that they can show you that
you can just put on there that will take care
of that for you.

Speaker 7 (04:53):
Oh great, Oh I know Florin de Core. Okay, Well,
thank you so much. I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Your you bet you take care and have wonderful weekend.

Speaker 7 (05:01):
You too, Bye bye bye.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
And again seven one three two one two five eight
seven four seven one three two one two five eight
seven four heading the Missouri City Terry. You're doing all
right today?

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Absolutely?

Speaker 1 (05:21):
How can I help you?

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Well, we're getting a new roof next week put on.
And one of the things that I didn't have a
chance to figure out is the kind of ventilation system
that they use when they put on the new roof.
He said something about and I think he used the
word ridge vnce yep instead of a turbine vent correct.

(05:43):
And I happened to read that ridgevents aren't good in
hot climates, and I said, oh no, because it's hot here.
So I don't know what better way to go.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
No, ridge vince, that is the best way to go.
I'm not sure where you're getting getting that from. I
mean they were developed it. I'm sorry I googled it.
That Google guy lies a lot.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
You know, I know, so I'm asking you.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
Yeah, No, ridge vent is absolutely the way to go.
I mean, it's what I put on my own house,
even it was developed for this type of climate. Now,
the more soft event you have, the better the ridge
vent will work. When I don't have we.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Recently had the Saffts and pasha bors replaced with the
hardy blank kind, and they just all have little holes
in the I think the soffit so, I guess I
don't know if that's good or not.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
That's perfect. You got to continuous soft event then you'll you'll, yeah,
you'll be great. Then putting in the ridge fence.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Okay, good. I didn't want to be tricked in any way.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
No, ma'am. No now, and I'm going to tell you
my least favorite is the wordly birds up there.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
You know, well that's what they yeah, that's what the
turbine there, he called them turbines or something, but yeah,
because sometimes I get tree little twigs stuck in them
and stop spinning.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
Well, they're just the least efficient. I mean, if I
can't do a ridge vent, then I use a solar
powered vent.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
And if I can't use the solar powered vent, I
would go to an electric one. My least favorite is
those whirllybirds.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
Well, it just sounded like they would work for me
because they suck air into your attic and make air
move around more. I thought, in the rig vent, how
does the air want to go in there?

Speaker 7 (07:32):
You know?

Speaker 1 (07:32):
That's what the way hot air rises, so as the
hot air rises and goes out through the ridge vent,
it draws new air in through the softa vents.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Oh well, that makes perfect sense. You're right, hot air
does right, you're correct, because it's hot upstairs and cold downstairs.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Yep, all right, all right, take care so much.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
It all makes sense now.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
Again seven one three, two one two five eight seven four.
And yes, if you're putting on an roof and you've
got lots of ridge vent or lots of ridges, then
the ridge vent is absolutely what you want to be
looking at. And we're gonna head to Baytown. John. This
is Jim. What can I do for you?

Speaker 8 (08:14):
Hey, Jim?

Speaker 1 (08:14):
How are you wonderful? How about you?

Speaker 6 (08:17):
I'm goody. So I have a house that built about
twenty years ago, and our air conditioner registers are starting
to blow out little bits of the insulation in the box,
and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do short of,
you know, tearing the whole box out and replacing it.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Probably not, because if it's blown pieces out, that plannum
box is shot, it's probably gotten wet in it. At
some point in time, the AC systems probably gonna need
some service work. Done to it, and honestly, it's it's
not all that ungodly expensive to replace the plantum box.

Speaker 6 (08:55):
Okay, all right, well I guess that answers my questions.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Okay, you take care of it by yeah, once once
it starts breaking down and blowing apart.

Speaker 7 (09:09):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
You know, sometimes people will want to try to put
a oh like a gluidhesive over. It's something sticky like that,
temporary at at the very best, uh and at the
worst totally useless. So got a question seven one three,
two one two five eight seven four, And I'll see

(09:33):
what I can do to help you out here on
Texas Home Improvement, your Total Home Improvement Soores. Hey, I

the systems that they carry. They have the British system

so many spills sometimes like no, I don't want to
hear any spills. I just you know which company actually
does qulted work and the backup anything so this should
go wrong.

Speaker 1 (11:48):

tips and information for you and your. Mama Here's Jim.

Speaker 1 (15:46):
Dottor, hey welcome back To Texas Home. Improvement your total
Home improvement source seven one three two one two five
eight seven. Four Let's. Seeames this Is. Chim how CAN
i help?

Speaker 13 (16:02):
YOU i.

Speaker 10 (16:06):
Heard the column earlier about the ridge vent versus. Turbans,
yeah And i'm fifty. TWO i started roofing WHILE i was.
Seventeen WHEN i first, started the turbans were made out
of a heavy metal that rusted and now they're made

(16:30):
out of.

Speaker 14 (16:30):
Aluminum they're very.

Speaker 10 (16:32):
Lightweight and my point is WHEN i when you know
In Southeast texas there's no breeze at all. None, yeah,
okay it's ninety eight degrees. Outside those turbines are spinning

(16:52):
so fast without a, breeze which tells me that it's
creating used in the you know right. Places it creates
a circulation and does suck that air out of the
attic with by creating circulation with uh the turbine, Spinning,

(17:15):
uh it really depends on the. House let me ask you.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
A question on. That if there's no, breeze, now what's
making that turbine, spin.

Speaker 10 (17:28):
The hot air rushing out of the?

Speaker 1 (17:30):
Attic exactly what do you think the ridge vent is
going to?

Speaker 15 (17:35):
Do?

Speaker 10 (17:35):
Then i'm not against ridge. Vent i'm just every house is,
Different that's What i'm. Saying and THEN i had a
question when you started talking about that. Insulation my wife
is telling me about we're turning a garage into a

(18:00):
apartment to two car, garage a little small. Apartment, okay
he's telling me about this blow in, insulation uh that
you paint over when it's. Done have you heard of?
That i'm kind of an old school or, not just
wanting to do it the old fashioned, way but, uh.

Speaker 1 (18:21):
It's a blown in insulation and then you paint over the.

Speaker 10 (18:24):
Insulation that's what my wife is telling. Me And i've
never heard of, that and that the PLACES i shop
or you, know the old school you.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
Know, Yeah, NO i haven't heard of any product of. It, No,
No i've never heard of anything that you can an
insulation that you blow in and then paint. Over is
this in the walls or neither in the roof attic
she's talking.

Speaker 10 (18:56):
About, yes, well she's talking about spraying that, over, uh
between the studs and over the studs and then paint over.
It i've never heard of.

Speaker 5 (19:07):
That.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
No, Yeah now they got the spray foam, insulation and you,
know you can when the walls are, open you can
spray that, in but you don't paint over. It after
the insulation is, in they typically come back with a
blade that they, cut so that's even with the face
of the studs and then sheet rock or or paneling

(19:29):
or whatever you're gonna put on the.

Speaker 10 (19:30):
Walls that's that's that's exactly what was going through my.
Mind i'd never heard of. THAT i don't know she's
from some social media thing or, something SO i THOUGHT
i asked, that.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
You, know a lot a lot of, times the internet
can be a great, thing but you got to really
take what you see sometimes with a grain of. Salt.
Uh and and she might have just miss misinterpreted something
that they were doing with.

Speaker 10 (20:01):
It that's true with THE i wasn't calling the uh
disagree with you on these, okay turbans and ridgement is
just everything is set up. DIFFERENT i did a uh

(20:26):
double wide about ten years ago for a, man and,
uh those come uh with these little flimsy square we
call them turtle, vents but they're they're.

Speaker 1 (20:40):
Horrible, yeah the.

Speaker 10 (20:41):
Air, hawks they're my air hawks makes some, yes, sir.
Yep the flashings only about an inch and a half
wide along the sides of. Them they dry rod when
they have metal ones. Too BUT i eliminated all those
on this van house and, uh it was a double

(21:03):
wide sixty foot, LONG i, believe AND i put a
turbine on each.

Speaker 11 (21:09):
End you, know.

Speaker 10 (21:10):
There's not much attic, space maybe two foot at the.
Most but he told me he, uh he turns his
air conditioner on when he gets home and hot air
comes out for the first five ten. Minutes and then
the day he came home and the turbines were, installed

(21:35):
his air came out cold as soon as soon as
he turned it. On so it even if there's not
a lot of attic, space it's still good to have some.

Speaker 1 (21:49):
Ventilation and no, Question, JAMES i gotta let you. Go
we've got to take a break for, news traffic and.
Weather we'll be back with More texas how improvement five
eight seven. Four let's talk About American. Standard now you're

In texas home. Improvement, hey welcome.

Speaker 1 (23:17):
Back seven one three two one two five eight Seven
ford seven one three two one two five eight seven.
Four let's head back to our. Calls we're going to Northeast, Houston.
Roslind this Is. Jim how CAN i help?

Speaker 3 (23:33):
You, yes, Sir, yes?

Speaker 16 (23:35):
Sir how you doing this?

Speaker 15 (23:36):
To didn't?

Speaker 1 (23:37):
Wonderful that's.

Speaker 16 (23:39):
Good, LOOK i have ceramic, flooring uh in my home
AND i want to put down that laminate.

Speaker 3 (23:46):
Flooring DO i need.

Speaker 16 (23:48):
To take that have that ceramic flooring taken, out broken
out BEFORE i put that lamoned flooring.

Speaker 1 (23:54):
Down, well you you'll have to do something, because, uh you,
know the ceramic floors typically have grout lines and things
and that will show through that new laminate. Floor so
you either got to float the, floor or take the
old one out and get back down to. Concrete, TYPICALLY

(24:16):
i prefer to take it out and get back down
to the. Concrete and the reason for, That over, time
the tile floor could start coming, loose especially happens when
floors get like twenty years, old and if it's under
your new, laminate your new laminate floor is gonna go to,
heck because when the tile comes, loose it's just not

(24:39):
gonna look good.

Speaker 16 (24:41):
Anymore, Okay, OKAY i see, now WELL i shall appreciate. It,
YEAH i was gonna do that flooring From sam's have
that spilled defense laminate. Flooring uh, huh we got the
padding underneath. It but, yep is that expensive getting a you,
know getting that ceramic towel?

Speaker 10 (25:02):
Out is that very?

Speaker 1 (25:03):
Expensive, well depends on how much elbow grease you want
to put yourself into.

Speaker 16 (25:08):
It, uh would it'd be best to get a professional?

Speaker 10 (25:13):
Probably?

Speaker 1 (25:13):
Huh well it, truthfully it's not that hard to take.

Speaker 12 (25:16):
Out.

Speaker 1 (25:17):
Uh and they make they make tools now that it
looks like a electric jackhammer and it's on a little
frame that slides along the, floor chipping up the tile
floor as you.

Speaker 16 (25:31):
Go, okay, Okay, WELL i think me and my son
and my.

Speaker 15 (25:35):
Husband we probably better get to.

Speaker 1 (25:37):
Work, no, no, no, No see it doesn't work that.
Way you get yourself a nice glass of iced, tea
you go sit out on the porch while your son
and your husband get to.

Speaker 17 (25:47):
Work, okay.

Speaker 16 (25:51):
Get a few more helping hands there you. Go, okay,
WELL i appreciate.

Speaker 3 (25:56):
That thank you so.

Speaker 11 (25:57):
Much you're.

Speaker 1 (25:58):
Welcome you take, care you t thank you seven one
three two one two five eight seven, Four And i'll
see WHAT i can do to help you out here
On Texas Home. Improvement if my wife just heard, that she's,
saying you made me do it with the, boys and
she she did Do she did help the boys scrape

(26:19):
up some floors twenty two years ago in the house
that we're in, Now paul And West. Houston how CAN
i help, you, Hey.

Speaker 11 (26:28):
DAHM i WAS i was JUST i heard one of
your sections earlier caller had talked about the installation that was, painted,
yes AND i just wanted to kind of clear WHAT
i think is happening. Up in some, instances you do
have to spray the foam with a thermal, barrier.

Speaker 10 (26:41):
Which looks like a.

Speaker 11 (26:41):
Paint, okay and you can't you can paint it if you,
want but that's more for protection from fire than anything.
Else SO i just thought i'd throw that out. There,
okay somebody's betting. Confused in most cases here in new,
homes you don't have to because the sheet rock is
your thummal, barrier Right sometimes, opining even when the codes,
changed you might have to again for a, while but

(27:04):
typically it's not painted unless you're doing the thermal. Barrier
there's no reason, too.

Speaker 1 (27:09):
Okay, now so, yeah in a living space, though typically
they would cover it up BECAUSE i, mean it's not
nice and flat and smooth or anything when it's.

Speaker 10 (27:19):
Done typically that's, Correct.

Speaker 11 (27:21):
Okay it is not the best look unless you're looking
unless you want to look at clouds and painted light
blue with some white spots in, it then it looks.

Speaker 1 (27:27):
Beautiful, well it might work wonderfully in a kid's room
then exactly all.

Speaker 11 (27:32):
Right it's always it's always up in the attic in
the roof. Deck so, yes the shea rock is, covered
you won't see, it or it's behind.

Speaker 5 (27:36):
The shea rock in the.

Speaker 11 (27:37):
Walls, Okay but, ANYWAY i just thought i'd throw that
out there and uh say that all, Right, yes, sir
have a thank you again.

Speaker 1 (27:50):
Seven one, three two one two five eight seven. Four
we're gonna head out to bren. Them, hell how are you?
Today i'm?

Speaker 13 (27:59):
Fine Doesn't i'm a seventy year old MAN fixhb seventy
one with the vital side of a twenty five year
old man in all matter casions on my last hip.
Replacement BUT i might be able to clear up this
about this insulation and. Painting, Okay back in the, seventies

(28:19):
like seventy, three seventy four ON u a friend of
mine went to The corps engineers AT a AND, m
and we went out to lunch with the, cadets and
we went to a restaurant and the walls looked like
the inside of a, cave, Okay And i'm thinking that
may have been GUNN i just like, spraying you, know a,

(28:43):
pool but it wasn't scraped. Off basically the same as
if you go to the zoo and they made you,
know rock formations and.

Speaker 9 (28:52):
Different, things, right that kind of.

Speaker 13 (28:54):
Stuff AND i don't know if they still do it or,
not but the dining room and, things they all look
like inside of a cave formation and they were kind
of a yellow cream color or.

Speaker 12 (29:07):
Something of that.

Speaker 13 (29:07):
Nature but, yeah it's haybrid was sprayed. On havebrid was.
Farmed that's how they left, it and then they painted.
It and that was before all this spray and insulation took, place,
right so there is a. PROCESS i don't know who
doesn't did it or anything of that. NATURE i don't
even know the restaurant's still. There but that was interesting

(29:31):
back in the day WHEN i was.

Speaker 1 (29:33):
Younger, yeah there ARE i know of some concrete things
you can do that, with and like you, said gunnite
and stuff like. That but but like our last caller,
said they do on sometimes when they're spraying, foam they
have to put a coatine over, it and that that
could have been what she.

Speaker 13 (29:53):
Saw but, see this has to be firm and hard
for you, know chairs and everything things like.

Speaker 1 (30:01):
That oh, yeah many kids find out it's a little.
Soft they're gonna be sticking fingers in it and the
animal spoon in it and everything.

Speaker 13 (30:08):
Else, yep that might be an. Option that might be
what she's talking. About she might have been in that restaurant,
herself yeap years and years. Ago, well it's a pleasure
to listen to. You it's been a pleasure talking to.
You you do a very good.

Speaker 1 (30:23):
Service thank, you. SIR i have a lot of fun doing.

Speaker 1 (34:29):
Jim how CAN i help?

Speaker 18 (34:30):
You, Hey, JIM.

Speaker 8 (34:33):
I live in a.

Speaker 18 (34:35):
House that was completed in twenty twenty, one So i've
been here four. Years i'm thinking about getting one of
those home warranty. Companies do you get anyone that you
prefer over the? Others like Maybe Due?

Speaker 1 (34:55):
West Do west don't offer?

Speaker 7 (34:58):
That?

Speaker 18 (34:59):
Uh, OKAY i wish you.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
DID i will give you my take on the home warranty.
Companies the first couple of years that you get, it
you usually can get it fairly. Cheap the longer you,
go every year they go up in. Price they do
price themselves out of. Reasonableness you got a four year old. House,

(35:27):
yeah if you took that same money and started sticking
it into an account every, year you'd have all the
money you need to take care of servicing. Everything, okay all?

Speaker 5 (35:40):
Right?

Speaker 18 (35:42):
Yeah BECAUSE i see these ads from you, Know, displace that, Place.

Speaker 1 (35:46):
Oh, yeah, Yeah American Home shield and all these different. Ones.
Yeah and here's the issue THAT i typically have because
with my air conditioning, Company i'll give you an extat.
AMPLE i did work for one of these warranty. COMPANIES
i let my head technician or head of that department

(36:09):
sign up and do. That but the problem is they
want to limit how much each call costs. Them and
by THAT i mean they would limit it down to
like two hundred. Dollars it was just over two, hundred
and regardless of what was, wrong that was all they

(36:30):
wanted to. Spend and if you went over, that they
would penalize you and drop you and things like. That
AND i got no problem with. That but what they're
doing to homeowners is making it where this guy comes,
out he does a half baked job to fix something
just to get it down to the next call because

(36:54):
he can't fix it right with what they're willing to.

Speaker 10 (36:57):
DO i.

Speaker 1 (36:58):
Understand, Okay and since your house is so, NEW i
really don't think you need it.

Speaker 18 (37:03):
Yet, Okay, WELL i would, rather you, know have if
something's ready to, go you, Know i'd rather have something protecting.

Speaker 12 (37:11):
It but does Do?

Speaker 18 (37:13):
West you do y'all have a?

Speaker 1 (37:15):

Information you bet you take. Care thank. YOU i can
tell you WHAT i got my hands. Into, obviously foundation,
repair air, conditioning we do repair, replacements, uh you know
whatever you duck. Works whatever you need on the air, conditioner,
plumbing anything plumbing, related we can take care of it for.

(37:57):
You and then stuff that comes off of. It the
foundation division like retaining, walls, uh concrete work for, driveways patio,
sidewalks things like, that. Drainage so, yes we get into
a lot of different things to take care of your.
Home and again our number seven one three two one

(38:20):
two five eight seven Four charlie In. Kingwood how CAN
i help?

Speaker 19 (38:26):
You, yes thank you Mister james for taking my. Call
you always give good. Advice that's a plus point about, you,
sir and thank you for your. SERVICE i bought a
house from the builder in twenty eleven and within six
months we saw the cracks and hardwood floor. Splitting so
we called the. Builder after eighteen, months he came with

(38:50):
a foundation company and put sixty four pers underneath that.
House so after every six, YEARS i mean two to three,
years the company comes by do the leveling and again
raise the foundation from which overside it has. Dropped last
week there was a water leak under the kitchen. Sink

(39:13):
it's like an, island so we were trying to trace
where the water is coming. Out we thought it could
be the plumbing or the one of the faucets could
have been, busted but then we realized it was fresh
water coming out from the sleeve which holds the two.
PIPES i believe it's hot and cold, water, Okay and
as soon AS i turned the main, off the water.

(39:35):
Stuffs SO i had to shut the main water line
off and that stopped supplying water to the whole, house,
Right and THEN i got a. Plumber he traced it
back where the hot water and old water lines are
and he put a shirt of valves over. There so

(39:55):
what do you recommend WHAT i need to? DO i,
mean we cannot find the other end of the, sleeve
as is the builder gone along the house or because
it's a, kitchen it's an island.

Speaker 1 (40:09):
Sink they should be able to trace down where the pipe.
GOES i mean there's equipment that and let me preference.
This most plumbers don't have the equipment to do. It
there are lines locate in leak detection companies who have
specialty equipment for locating stuff like, that and they should

(40:34):
be able to trace down where that line.

Speaker 20 (40:36):
Is so you want A pvc, pipe even A pvc, Pipe.

Speaker 19 (40:42):
Okay so if there has to be, repaired do they
need to go on they need the Foundation, again.

Speaker 1 (40:49):
Well not, NECESSARILY i, mean depending on where the league.
Is but most of the water lines are typically run.
Overhead i'm gonna put you on hold because i gotta
take a quick. Break i'll be right back with. You
let's talk about lentil. Lift you, know if you have
an overhead garage door that's sagging in the middle and
it's got brick cracks above it and, stuff that's typically

(41:11):
not a foundation. Problem that's a problem with the. Lentil
and when the lentil, SAgs so does the framework of the.
House it starts pulling on. Things it's just not a good. Thing,
well lental lyft can come in with a New lentil
that goes under the old. One they take the trim
off from around the opening of the garage, door push
everything back up into, place secure this new lentil and

(41:34):
give you a twenty five year. Warranty that's What Lentil lift.
Does you got A lentil lit, Sagging call Lental lift
at eight three three nine zero three two two two.
Six that's eight three three nine zero three two two

Texas Home. Improvement seven one, three two one two five
eight seven.

Speaker 21 (44:21):
Four.

Speaker 1 (44:23):
Uh we're talking With charlie here On Texas Home. Improvement
and so if the the the water lines are typically
not in the foundations In kingwood, area they typically run
overhead and in the. Walls SO i don't know that

(44:47):
this is going to be really a water line issue
unless it's the line that say you got an island,
sink then they will run the line under the slab
to come up in the island. Sink that's what it
looks like, Okay so if that's the, case you'll probably
have a choice once the issue is located of if

(45:10):
it is a, leak you can go through the slab
to fix it or tunnel up underneath to fix. It
but it's going to depend on where the leak is
and what it. Is it really wouldn't surprise me if
it's at one end or the, other which will be
accessible because going across the slab, typically you, know the

(45:35):
plumbing comes in twenty foot, sticks so unless there's a
joint in, there there shouldn't have been anything to make
the pipe itself.

Speaker 10 (45:41):
Break, okay so what do you?

Speaker 19 (45:49):
Suggest do you recommend you come and take a look at?

what they're. Doing both of them are. Engineers they'll be
able to answer questions for. You but if you need
me to answer, something now's the time to call seven
one three two one two five eight seven Four mark In.
Willis how CAN i help you?

Speaker 21 (50:43):
Today, Yeah, Jim i'm was wondering what your thoughts are
on using exterior sheet rock on porches and.

Speaker 1 (50:51):
Patios, well are you talking about the green?

Speaker 21 (50:58):
ROCK i assume it was green. Rock this house was
built about it will be three years In september we
moved in and HAVING i think the builder didn't put
any algecide in the, paint.

Speaker 5 (51:13):
So it's getting a lot of.

Speaker 21 (51:14):
Mildew i've already had it painted a little bit about
six months, ago And i'm gonna have to repaint the whole. Thing,
Yeah AND i questioned the builder about it when when we.
BUILT i, said you, KNOW i don't Think i've ever
seen that. Before AND i, said, well it's you, know
you're gonna have to paint it every few. Years you
know the advantages you don't have the joints of the

(51:36):
one by. Two, uh if you're gonna use hardy. Board,
yeah and you, know so it looks nice, initially but
that's gonna.

Speaker 1 (51:45):
Get a lot of Melted, yeah it's not gonna hold up, because,
uh even when you use green, rock over, time especially
if it's, Outside, uh the moisture will start affecting. It and,
yeah you, know the tape in bed stuff will start
to peel. Off things like that will happen over. Time

(52:06):
the better you keep it painted though and sealed that,
way the better off you're going to. Be you are,
Correct they probably did not use any type of mold
inhibitor or anything in the. Paint so before you put that,
on you're gonna want to clean it real good and
get off as much as a mold, milde put on

(52:27):
a killer on, there clean it up, again and then
go ahead and paint it with a paint that's got
an inhibitor ated in.

Speaker 5 (52:38):
It, okay is this becoming?

Speaker 21 (52:41):
Common i've never seen it.

Speaker 1 (52:43):
Before not common That i'm aware. OF i have not
seen it.

Speaker 21 (52:48):
Either, well it's a very big.

Speaker 11 (52:52):
Patio it's like thirty feet by twenty.

Speaker 21 (52:55):
Feet, yeah it looks nice because it doesn't have the joints.

Speaker 5 (52:59):
That you would have with hardy yep or AND.

Speaker 21 (53:02):
I would assume tongue and grew would have been extremely.

Speaker 5 (53:05):
Expensive so BUT.

Speaker 1 (53:08):
I bet it wouldn't be mill doing on you all the.

Speaker 10 (53:10):
Time, well that's that's.

Speaker 21 (53:12):
It THAT'S i want to make sure. That So i'll
just make sure when they paint, it they put the
outside in.

Speaker 1 (53:17):
It And i'm gonna be. UPFRONT i think the paint's
going to make a big. Difference. Uh it's probably painted
with a flat. Paint but if you could go to
a semi, gloss, uh the moisture won't be near as
bad on.

Speaker 15 (53:34):
It, okay, okay very.

Speaker 21 (53:38):
Good will you answer my question?

Speaker 1 (53:40):
Already you take?

Speaker 5 (53:41):
Care all, Right billy.

Speaker 1 (53:45):

eight seven, four gonna go over To Jersey. Village, Joe
welcome To Texas home Improvement.

Speaker 8 (53:57):
Party, Jim i've got a chimney cap that is leaking
inside the flu inside the, house AND i need to
get a chimney cap changed. Out AND i was wondering
WHO i should call or what? Company does your company handle?

Speaker 1 (54:15):
It, no that's typically handled either by a roofing contractor
or if you have a chimney sweep come, out they
would do. It most of the, time it's done by
the roofing contractor, though.

Speaker 8 (54:32):

kitchen and bathroom of my rent house that has a
concrete slab, foundation planning to replace it with sheet. Vinyl
what grade would be the best as far as thickness and?
Where thanks for your. Help, well it really depends on

(57:37):
the sheet vinyl because the different. Ones different manufacturers had
different specs that they go, by and whether it's a
stiff one or a flexible. One, really you're gonna do
fine with whatever vinyl you go, with as long as
you go to a regular brand store and get. It

(58:00):
but the sheep, minyl the big advantages of it is
it's a solid. Piece you don't have to worry about
moisture going through it and stuff like that from the. Surface,
PERSONALLY i think it's something that's kind of underutilized in
today's homes and construction because everybody wants to go with

(58:22):
the tile and things like that that cost a lot
more and don't necessarily protect as, well but that's just
my two. Cents but, really any sheep, minyl you'll you'll be.
Fine you'll get years and years out of.

Texas Home. Improvement how CAN i help?

Speaker 10 (01:03:58):
You how good at?

Speaker 12 (01:03:59):
It And, HEY i got a fireplace that out on
the exterior of the. House it's got some some cracks in.
IT i don't THINK i got foundation problems BECAUSE i
don't KNOW i may or may, not but or may
or may. Not But i've got throughout the. House there's
no cracks in the, walls all the door. Shut the
house is about forty years. Old but out there on

(01:04:22):
that exterior part of that, FIREPLACE i see these little,
cracks not, many BUT i see, it AND i was
wanting to Do my wife called it A german. Smear,
Ok i'm just gonna smear that and fill in the
cracks at the same. Way is is there ANYTHING i
need to do beyond?

Speaker 1 (01:04:39):
That or are these cracks You're are they just like
short or just on the one brick or do they
extend up in their eighth of an inch?

Speaker 10 (01:04:49):
WHITE i.

Speaker 12 (01:04:52):
Don't think they're even they extend, up BUT i don't
think they're an eighth of an. Inch why they might
not even be. That But, okay there's a few of,
them and it's just at the, fireplace AND i was,
wondering is it just called that fireplace is so heavy right?

Speaker 10 (01:05:04):
THERE i don't.

Speaker 1 (01:05:05):
Know, no it's it's typically going to have something to
do with the way it was put. Together so, Uh,
now are you in A german smeir or the whole
house or just just that Area.

Speaker 12 (01:05:16):
No just that one section of the fireplace it a
kind of contrasts with the other rest of the color
of the.

Speaker 1 (01:05:23):
House, okay if that's what you're going to, DO i
would recommend that you have a brick mason come out
and repair those cracks. First, now you could do it
yourself if you, wanted because since you're going to put
The german shmeir over it, Anyways, uh matching the mortar
color is not going to be that big a deal

(01:05:43):
because you're going to cover it up, anyways and typically
what they end up doing is taking the mortar out
and the bricks themselves crack as.

Speaker 12 (01:05:54):
Well, no BUT i do HAVE i don't have need
of a maze one corner of my, house around the
corner at the very. BOTTOM i don't know, why But
i've got about three or four bricks at the just
at the very bottom have come.

Speaker 5 (01:06:08):
Off SO i. NEED i.

Speaker 12 (01:06:10):
DO i am in. Need and if you've got a
recommendation for a, Mason i'll take.

Speaker 1 (01:06:14):
It, yeah give Mister brick a call and he let
me see IF i got his number with me, here
Because i'm looking right now AND i don't see. IT
i got my other. SHEET i, MEAN i got my
cheat sheet THAT i keep all the different numbers for the,
people AND i got two different. Ones and where is

(01:06:39):
that the other? Sheet, well, yeah you'll just have to
look it up BECAUSE i don't HAVE i.

Speaker 5 (01:06:46):
Can look him.

Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
Up yeah.

Speaker 12 (01:06:49):
He's here In houston or yes worth it in ho. Yep,
OKAY i look him.

Speaker 1 (01:06:55):
Up and then they can come out and they'll tuck
point it and take here of the issues so that
you know you don't don't have issues with.

Speaker 12 (01:07:04):
It all, right thank, you.

Speaker 1 (01:07:07):
Sir you bet you take. Care and the issue you
got to deal with is if you don't deal with the,
crack it'll expand and contract and it'll just crack right
through That German schmeer as, Well so you know you'd
kind of be shooting yourself in the, foot all. Right
seven one, three, two one two five eight seven Four

(01:07:30):
isaac and willis welcome to seven forty k t R. H, Hi.

Speaker 14 (01:07:35):
JIM i got a question for. You years, AGO i
bought a sixteen by Forty morgan metal storage building AND
i hauled it up to my dear leave and finished
out the inside of it to make a.

Speaker 5 (01:07:48):
Cabin.

Speaker 14 (01:07:49):
OKAY i had hired a carpenter at the, time and
we did a lot of, work and THEN i went
on vacation and left him there to. Work and WHILE
i was had planned on using that spray phone insulation
in the, ceiling but WHILE i was, gone he installed
the fiberglass insulation onto the ceiling and then underneath that

(01:08:12):
for like the interior, CEILING i used corrugated chins to
make it look, like you, know you're just a country
cabin or bond type the core.

Speaker 23 (01:08:20):
Inside, okay but as soon as we turn on the air,
conditioning and it's been this way for a long, time
but as soon as you turn on the air, conditioning
it's the condensation in the.

Speaker 14 (01:08:31):
Ceiling it literally rains inside that.

Speaker 15 (01:08:35):
Building, yeah do you think the, ceiling it's the inside
ceiling has a million screws in. It the top of
the outside part of the of the roof is screwed,
on also into two by. Fours do you think IF
i unscrewed that top roof and put on the the

(01:08:57):
stick on radium barrier of the shop talk about all the,
time put.

Speaker 1 (01:09:01):
The energy queue up. There, YEAH i think that would
probably eliminate your problem because it blocks the heat. Transfer
and what's happening is he probably only put AN r
thirteen insulation up, there and that's just not enough to
block enough of the, heat so you're getting a temperature
differential THE i think your radiant barrier would fix that for.

Speaker 14 (01:09:22):
You, okay, Well i'm time for my son and his
buddy's get ready to get.

Speaker 1 (01:09:28):
There you, go give him something to. DO i will
tell YOU i had my kids do several radiant barrier
jobs for. Me it's good for them with. THAT i
gotta let you. Go when we come, Back i'll tell
a story about my son's radiant barrier at the Deer.
Lease let's talk TO Usa insulation, though because you, know
if you're having issues with the insulation in your, WALLS

(01:09:50):
Usa insulation can fix that for you by putting just
little holes through like the brick, mortar injecting this non
expansive foam that seals all the air, gaps increases THE r,
value reduces the noise from. Outside it's just a great
way to insulate your existing. HOME Usa. INSULATION i had

(01:10:12):
them do my house about five months. Ago it's. GREAT
i love. It eight three two three seven six sixty
eight sixty five FOR Usa. Insulation just can't get.

Speaker 2 (01:10:26):

home proven question seven one, three, two one two five
eight seven, Four AND i, SAID i was going to
tell you a little. Story you, Know i've had my

(01:11:48):
sons do work for me for well, forever you have sons,
to so you got somebody To it's cheap. Labor let's
let's be real, here but just just. Teasing we did
radiant barrier up at The Deer. Lease we've got it
in all the buildings and. Stuff and, uh the boys
were probably thirteen fourteen years, old And i've had them

(01:12:11):
putting in the radiant. BARRIER i come in and here
they've got these twisted hats on their head made out
of radiant barrier with a big point coming. Up, uh
look like the guys who are waiting For martians to,
come so that they're protecting their brains from the brain
Suckers martians. Coming it was. Hilarious and to see them

(01:12:34):
STAND i may to see them standing there with deer
rifles with those hats. ON i got pictures of it
to prove this did. Happen THAT i will save until
later in their lives while they're and they're both in
their mid and late thirties, now but these are THINGS
i will pull out when their kids are a little bit. Older,

(01:12:55):
anyways if you got a home proven question seven one
three two point two five eight seven Four glenn And Tom,
ball how CAN i help you?

Speaker 17 (01:13:04):
Today, Hey, jim appreciate you taking my.

Speaker 1 (01:13:07):
Call i've got a.

Speaker 17 (01:13:10):
HOUSE i bought it in Twenty january twenty. Ten it
was built fall of twenty on. Nine, anyway when you
come in the front, door.

Speaker 1 (01:13:26):
It's got the.

Speaker 17 (01:13:26):
Base the whole house has this base board that's probably
about nine inches from the floor to the. Top and
it's not it must be made out of some kind
of particle. Board reason REASON i know that IS i
had a bedroom that was got wet During harvey and

(01:13:49):
the stuff just swelled.

Speaker 1 (01:13:50):
Up oh, yeah it's probably THE mdf.

Speaker 17 (01:13:54):
Board oh, okay BUT i couldn't find any. Mold and
FOR i had that, room she, rocked replaced and everything and.
EVERYBODY i still don't have molding in. There But i'm
there's nobody here but me and my, dog SO i
don't worry about it too.

Speaker 12 (01:14:10):
Much but.

Speaker 17 (01:14:12):
WHERE i come in the front, door directly to the,
Left i've Got i've got cleaning people that come every Other.
Thursday and when you come in the front, door it's
tile floor and down there that baseboard to the. Left
i've been noticing it looked looked like it was wet
and the paint's peeling off of, It and it was

(01:14:34):
wet the last couple of days they were Here, thursday
AND i sent her texts not to mop there TILL
i get that. Fixed and uh, ONE i was wondering
who DO i contact to replace? That and, uh She's

(01:14:54):
she sent a text back saying it would probably water
coming from the inside of the.

Speaker 18 (01:14:58):
WALL i have a.

Speaker 17 (01:15:03):
Directly on the other side of that.

Speaker 7 (01:15:04):
Wall Is i've got an.

Speaker 17 (01:15:06):
Office and it's carpet in, there and it has that
same molding AND i just looked at it and it's
not wet at all in, There.

Speaker 1 (01:15:14):
And, yeah and why would water be coming out of
a wall if there's no water fixtures in?

Speaker 17 (01:15:19):
It, yeah there's. Nothing that's just the entryway for the
to the.

Speaker 12 (01:15:23):
House.

Speaker 1 (01:15:24):
Yeah now it does how far in from the end
from the door from the outside, wall is?

Speaker 20 (01:15:31):
It?

Speaker 17 (01:15:34):
Uh from the outside? Wall, Well i've got a covered
patio on the front and it's. Brick that's all, brick And,
okay that baseboard's probably one. Step when you come in the,
door it's like ten inches to the.

Speaker 1 (01:15:53):
Left that's the. Entryway does the front porch get a
lot of water on it when we have these heavy?

Speaker 17 (01:15:58):
Rains only time it ever gets what the house faces
west and the only time it ever gets wet is
when we get like one of those De racho's or
something coming to the west. Side most of the rain
that we get here's either norther that hits the back.

Speaker 1 (01:16:16):
Or, yeah the.

Speaker 17 (01:16:20):
South, yeah patio is hardly ever wet BECAUSE i you,
KNOW i, KNOW i sit out there with my dog
and a couple of rock and. CHAIRS i got out
there in the.

Speaker 1 (01:16:30):
Evening well it could be, THEN i, mean is it
when you go down and feel it? Now is it
wet from the rains we've been having or or it
just shows the water. Damage, no it was wet.

Speaker 17 (01:16:46):
Before that was the first rain we had, here and
that Was thursday evening we got A, yeah all that
front came through here and that was the first rain
we had had in a long, time.

Speaker 1 (01:16:58):
And it was wet before that.

Speaker 9 (01:17:02):
Before.

Speaker 1 (01:17:02):
That, okay then there's there's got to be a leak
somewhere and it can travel following the base or the
seal plate of the wall and just get close enough
to THAT mdf at that point where uh it's messing it.

(01:17:24):
Up so the housekeeper may not be right that it's
a leak in the, wall but, yes there is going
to be a leak somewhere in the water is getting
onto that seal plate and traveling.

Speaker 17 (01:17:38):
Okay like a pipe in the.

Speaker 1 (01:17:40):
Attic it could be a pipe in the. Attic it
could be that it's traveling along from the kitchen wall
or laundry room or. Something but somewhere along where that
sial plate is getting, wet or the dog found a
good place to go pee and is messing up your.
Board BUT i doubt that's the.

Speaker 17 (01:17:59):
Case, no she goes out her dog. Door yeah she
ever needs. Anything so who WOULD i get to come
check that? Out it's about a six foot section of base.

Speaker 1 (01:18:16):
Board my bigger concern is if it's been Doing if
it's if it's What i'm thinking it, is you're probably
gonna have some issues having to take stuff. Apart, Uh
so Give Woodlands Water restoration a, call, okay and and

(01:18:40):
talk with. Them now you know they deal with water
mitigation and issues like. That, uh AND i think you're
gonna end up needing that because it's bigger areas you
have and for it not to be, THERE i, mean
for it to be there when we weren't having rains
and stuff tells me, that, yes you've got an issue

(01:19:02):
that's going to have to be. Addressed and those guys
that's what they specialize.

Speaker 8 (01:19:08):
In.

Speaker 17 (01:19:10):
Okay, YEAH i don't have anything anywhere else in the
in the, house.

Speaker 3 (01:19:19):
BUT i.

Speaker 17 (01:19:19):
DID i had a bedroom that was like that for
where A pbc pipe that popped at an elbow up
in the.

Speaker 1 (01:19:28):
Attic, yeah and it could be, something you, know because
that those walls won't have any insulation in, it so
it could be something that's in the attic and coming
down in that.

Speaker 12 (01:19:37):
Area but.

Speaker 1 (01:19:40):
That that's WHY i would give the call to though
Is woodland's Water Restoration AND i don't have their phone
number with.

Speaker 17 (01:19:45):
Me that's it's, Okay i'll find, it, Okay, okay appreciate
your help and Enjoy.

Speaker 1 (01:19:54):
Thank, you. SIR i plan on.

Speaker 10 (01:19:55):
It, okay thank you.

Great the ready seal looks just as good as it did.

Speaker 5 (01:22:21):
TODAY i put it.

Speaker 1 (01:22:22):
On ready. Seal you, know spray it on roll it,
on brush it. On you don't have to worry about
laps or, streaks runs any of that stuff because of
the way it soaks deep down into the wood. Fibers
it takes care of all of, it and it's available.

help you with any tree issues you're. Having and What

(01:22:44):

you start seeing branches having, Issues you've got people trying
to do construction too close to a, tree and you
need to know how to take care of it whatever
is happening around your, trees or if you just need
somebody to look at it and tell you what is
safe to trim and not. Trim arborist On demand talk

(01:23:07):

More welcome back To Texas Home. Improvements Your Total Home
improvements or seven one three two point two five eight
seven four let's head To dayton And. Mark welcome To

(01:23:55):
Texas Home. Improvement how CAN i help?

Speaker 6 (01:23:57):
You good?

Speaker 5 (01:23:58):
Afternoon or What i'm calling. About if my house has
all ceramic cow and when they built, it, they for whatever,
reason they put the baseboard down, First, OKAY i guess
maybe the cabinet maker didn't want to come back as the.
Trumpet but, anyway that's what we, got and, Uh i've.

(01:24:19):
Got of course it doesn't cover. Completely some places that looks.
Fine you know they slid it right underre it looks.
Good you got a few places scattered through the house
that doesn't look. Well the question Is i'm looking at.
OPTIONS i, MEAN i guess quarter around could be an,
option BUT i don't really like quarter. Around, okay it
could be, caught But i'm concerned that if you put

(01:24:41):
the same cockie it just looks. Funny, yes you talk
at the bottom of the. Laceport SO i don't know
if you got any ideas or run across this or.

Speaker 1 (01:24:47):
Not you hit the two THAT i would have, recommended,
okay and if you, don't if you don't like a quarter,
AROUND i would definitely go with. Caking. Uh and mostly
because a lot of times they call it anyways to
give it a finished, look.

Speaker 21 (01:25:07):
You know WHAT i?

Speaker 5 (01:25:07):
Mean, no so what what you're telling me? Now I'M
i would think it would look, funny you, know because.
CALKING i would think it would a yellow. OVERTIME i,
MEAN i don't.

Speaker 1 (01:25:16):
KNOW i, mean get what colors you trim?

Speaker 5 (01:25:21):
White the baseboard.

Speaker 1 (01:25:23):
White if you use a siliconized white, Cock, uh it
really doesn't yellow over. TIME i GUESS i shouldn't say
it doesn't. It but you will be painting before it's gonna.

Speaker 5 (01:25:37):
Yellow what ABOUT i, got you, know painters going to
come out and do. This but, yeah we were debating
that and they use All Sherman williams. PARKS i think
they're gonna use nine FIFTY a or something like. THAT
i don't know if that's a good cock or.

Speaker 1 (01:25:51):
NOT i honestly haven't looked at that. One WHAT i
typically tell people, is don't use a three or five year.
Cock get one that is like a thirty or fifty year.

Speaker 15 (01:26:05):
Cock.

Speaker 5 (01:26:06):
Yeah, YEAH i think this is a fifty year, call
is what it says on the Because i've looked at
an old, line you. Know, okay so it's a fifty year.

Speaker 1 (01:26:13):
Call and if that's the, case you'll you'll probably get
twenty twenty five years out of it and not have
to worry about.

Speaker 5 (01:26:20):
It have you seen this done very? MUCH i, MEAN
i believe tile and typically, always you, know put the
tile down and put the baseboard on top of. It
is this typical when it's normally done in new?

Speaker 1 (01:26:31):
Homes, No normally the tile would go in first and
then the baseboard because even the sheet rock is kept
a half to three quarters of an inch off the. Floor.

Speaker 5 (01:26:43):
Right, well but she've ran across this. BEFORE i guess
the only solutions is to cal get or quarter. Around.
Yep and you've seen it called and it looks.

Speaker 21 (01:26:54):
Okay oh.

Speaker 1 (01:26:55):
Yeah even when they put it on top of the,
tile most of the time it gets cocked because otherwise
you got this gap there that is taller and smaller
as you passing over different tile, pieces and it just
seals everything up and gives it a finished one. Piece,
LOOK i Guess.

Speaker 5 (01:27:14):
I've never, Noticed i'll be honest with. YOU i always
just they set it down and so it'd be okay.

Speaker 1 (01:27:19):
To coffee absolute, yeah, wow.

Speaker 5 (01:27:24):
Thank you have a wonnerful buck.

Speaker 1 (01:27:25):

then the acy guy pretty much told, me you, know
don't do.

Speaker 15 (01:27:51):
It don't replace the ducks because you.

Speaker 20 (01:27:53):
Got the, stealed you got the round, stealed and then
those are. Good they don't sell it. Anymore blah blah,
blah on and. Off so NOW i noticed the, insulation you,
KNOW i, MEAN i guess the pipe you know is
covered by, insult you, know some kind of, insulation, right
some of the insulation is working, off is coming. Off
and Then i've seen some conversation going. On SO i
guess my question is he, said okay to re, well what's?

(01:28:16):
Better he, said, okay to replace it with the new
the new ducks that comes in, whatever, right those those
it looks like A i don't know what you call,
it but, anyway and then remove the old steel air duck.

Speaker 1 (01:28:28):

PIPE i would put new insulation around it BEFORE i replaced,
it And i'll tell you what hose can you hold
on through this? BREAK i want to address something with
you on that when when we come, back we'll be

Wrong here's More Texas Home improvement With Jim.

Speaker 1 (01:31:17):
Dutton, hey welcome back To Texas Home, improvement your total
home improvement. Source So jose on the steel duckwork versus
the new flex, stuck, sir the new flex duck uses
AN r eight insulation on the outside of. It but

(01:31:38):
those old ducks like you, have they have actually started
working and tried to pass codes to go back to
that type of duckwork that you, have and they may
be implementing, that and you're gonna tear it out put
a flex, duck only to be told down the road
that you're gonna have to go back to that metal,

(01:31:59):
duck which is extremely. Expensive so IF i already had
that duck work like you, have, NO i definitely would
not be taking it.

Speaker 11 (01:32:08):
Out.

Speaker 1 (01:32:08):
Now you got the choice of rewrapping it with, insulation
and you'd have to get the insulation tight on it
to keep it from, sweating or you have somebody come,
in or you go get those portable bottles and spray
it with foam insulation that seals up any air. Leaks

(01:32:28):
it makes sure everything is nice and tight on the,
duck and it gives you THE r value so you
don't have the sweating issue any.

Speaker 20 (01:32:38):
Longer OH i, See, okay, okay, Okay well if you.

Speaker 1 (01:32:42):
Do if you do it with the spray, insulation you
got to make sure you get the bottom side as.

Speaker 20 (01:32:45):
Well IF i wanted to replace THE ac unit, itself
would that matter or not?

Speaker 1 (01:32:52):
Really not really because you would just ducked over to
this same, duckwork got?

Speaker 19 (01:32:58):
It yeah that makes?

Speaker 5 (01:32:59):
Sense? Yeah?

Speaker 20 (01:33:00):
Absolutely, okay, Okay well one week quick. Question you know
on last, question will you remove the old insulation around you,
know LIKE i have an addict rakigmatic would you remove
the old insulation and put a new insulation or would
you just or you just throw more insulation on top
of the old.

Speaker 10 (01:33:17):
One what would you?

Speaker 1 (01:33:18):
Do unless there's been a lot of rodents in there
that you, know left feces and. STUFF i would just
go over and add.
