Speaker 7 (00:31):
Football here we come. It's the number one. Oh yes,
Houston has the orders, the greatest football team.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
It's true.
Speaker 7 (00:45):
We take the ball from gool to go like no
one's aversing. We're in the air. We're on the ground
always and control.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
And when you say the.
Speaker 7 (00:56):
Boss get talking. Super cool because we're the.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Earl Campbell, dam Pastor in Nightman fro both Street Him,
Alvin Bay Hurley, Colp Double Zeros, Guinea Burrows rail Roads,
(01:26):
Greg Bingham Carpenter. We got the From nineteen seventy eight
to nineteen eighty seven, the Houston Oilers training camp was
in San Angelo, Texas. I know that because my great grandfather,
(01:49):
Charlie P. Sever You very rarely heard me speak of
him for a moment, but he was a security guard
at the front gate to the Oilers training camp, which
is interesting because he was old. I don't know if
anybody was going to bum rush the place that he
would have been able to do much good, and that
was kind of the running joke. Even as a little kid.
(02:10):
He was known as Papaul Bob to me, not because
his name was Bob, it was Charlie, but because he
had a dog name Bob, and because my great grandfather
was alive, which is a rare treat. And I had
a Papaul who was my mother's father. Well, his father
couldn't be Papaul too, we had to distinguish him, so
he was Papa all Bob. So I was about seven
or eight years old and my great grandmother, Papaul Bob
(02:31):
had died, and my great grandmother was laying in bed
and she was bedridden and she was going to die
within the year, and she was kind of going in
and out of consciousness or her memory, and she was
talking about stories of her and Charlie, her and Charlie,
and I thought, wow, she has dishonored my Papa Bob
(02:52):
in her final days. I cannot believe grandmother is doing this.
But Papaul Bob was named for the dog. His real
name was Charlie, so she was staying true to her
to her husband of many years, who had then passed
San Angelo, Texas. If you were heading on iten west
coming out of San Antone and you're headed toward El Paso. Oh,
(03:16):
when you get about at Sonora, you would take two
seventy seven north and you would head into San Angelo.
A wonderful little town about one hundred thousand people. So
you can think Beaumont if you know the area. It's
the county seat of what county are on Tom Green
Very good, you are an expert. It's in the Concho
(03:38):
Valley between the Permian Basin to the northwest, the Chihuahwan
Desert to the southwest, Osage Plains to the northeast, and
Central Texas to the southeast. With a population just one
hundred and seven shy of one hundred thousand, it is
the home to Angelo State University, the historic Fort Concho
(03:59):
Goodfellow Air Force Base, and the seat of the Roman
Catholic Diocese of San Angelo. There is an independent news
agency in San Angelo that gets more views, more followers
than the television, radio and newspaper combined. It's called San
(04:22):
Angelo Live. We are honored to be joined by Joe Hyde.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Welcome sir, Well, welcome Michael Barry. I actually am from
Katie Texas. Oh my goodness, I have a connection to Houston,
and you know, I'm very familiar with your show. Uh
you know, busy my parents. I'd listen to you, and
I think we would all be big fans out here
in San Angelo, Texas of the Michael Berry Show. They
just play it somewhere.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Well, what a nice thing to say. Okay, Well, we're
on WAI out of San Antone. But I don't know
if iHeart has a station in San Angelo. We don't
have to be on an iHeart station. But I'm gonna
put Kirk Kretsch with Premiere on that issue. We are
going to lock up San Angelo. That is our next
big conquest. You came to my attention because you wrote
(05:09):
an article about Midland becoming Midland Lee. Bringing back the
name of Roberty Lee yet another sign that we can
we can embrace our heritage, We can live comfortably with
things that make some people uncomfortable. And y'all have owned
that story. Can you tell us what happened going back
(05:29):
to the name change which it had been for so long,
the community reaction and then bringing it back.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Well we have actually there's you know, we're big into
football out here and San Angelo Alive is you know,
we have a product called Cover One where we cover
high school football the Friday Night Lights. If you're familiar
with the New movie and the TV show. Of course
we've kind of followed that, you know, the San Angelo Bobcats,
the Angel Central bodcasts, Permium Mojoe, you know, the Panthers
(06:00):
and Abilene and even up into Lubbock. You know, we
cover just about every football team, and Midland Lee is
more of the Midland Lee Rebels. I would say as
a brand, is as popular as the Longhorns or the
Aggies out here. And when that school board, the very
(06:21):
woke school Board of Midland, Texas back in twenty twenty,
they got they got the virus, and they voted to
remove the name Lee, Robert E. Lee from that school.
Everyone was up in arms, but no one would speak
for him one. Everyone was afraid to talk about Robert E. Lee.
(06:43):
And so Manny Diaz and I he's my video guy.
We went out there. We actually did a video story
and they were having a protest in favor of keeping
the name Midland Lee Rebels. And it was primarily I mean,
you had every color out there. You had whites, you
had you had the Hispanics. They all wanted to keep
it because that was their brand, you know, the Midland
(07:05):
Lee Rebels. I mean it's a storied football team, almost
as good as the Katie Tigers, and they didn't want
to change anything. They thought that if you changed his name,
all these famous football players that came or athletes actually
that came out of the Midland Lee Rebels would be somehow,
you know, their legacies would be smeared. Sure. So it
(07:28):
didn't have anything to do with the Civil War or
slavery or anything like that. It's just you know, that
place has been the Midland Lee High School since nineteen
sixty one, so you had decades and decades of traditions
that that school board just wiped out and they turned
it into Midland Legacy. And nobody wanted to be called
mid Legacy. I mean, that's a soulless name. It is nothing.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
You know what it sounds like, Joe. It sounds like
a name that you would hire these consultants to come
in and give you a name that's supposed to sound
like a legacy, But isn't. It's a name. It's puffery,
it's soulless, it is vapid, and you're absolutely right. It's
absolutely meaningless. Joe Hyde of San Angelo Live a good
(08:15):
follow on Twitter, by the way, which is how I
found them. I've been following them for a while to
get news in the region. Is our guests will continue
our conversation with him coming up.
Speaker 7 (08:28):
This is the Michael Barry Show.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Of people who seem to destroy their history are on
a death spiral. Good, the bad, and the ugly, the
contentious and controversial. The moment you are ashamed of your history,
you do not learn, understand it, learned from it is
(09:02):
a sign of your culture. And this is a sign
of America that we have seen this happen in so
many different ways. To rewrite and to erase, to revise,
it is a sickness. There is a pride in your history.
If for no other reason, then that's your history. I
(09:25):
don't know if Orange is any better than San Angelo
or Katie or anywhere else, but it's where I'm from
and I'm proud of it. And I worry about people
who are not proud of their family and their heritage
and their culture and their people and their history. Joe
Hyde is San Angelo alive. Joe, let me take a
moment before we go back and ask you if I
(09:47):
was to roll into San Angelo today and you were
to take me for the best burger in town that
is locally owned and operated, Maybe a milkshake, soda fountains,
some good home cut fries, maybe some ice cream.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
Pie.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
That'll do for now, where would you take me?
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Well, you have two choices. You know, San Angelo Live
actually owns a bar and music venue called the Arc Light,
and but the other option Art Life Arc Light, like
if you remember Vietnam, the Arc Light bombing missions of
the b Pity Two's Arc Arc Light Bar and Grill.
(10:32):
Your other option is the The outgoing mayor she just
turned out, is Brenda Gunter, and she owns a place
right down the street from the Arc Light called Miss Hattie's,
which is kind of Miss Hattie's Cathouse lounge and restaurants.
And it's, uh, there's there's a little history because you
(10:53):
have Fort Conco there of having Brothels on the main
street of sant Angelo back in the eighteen eighties, and
so she kind of tied into that. And as Miss
Hatties is probably the oldest standing, continuously running restaurant still
in downtown San Angel there's a lot of other restaurants
there too, but she's been there the longest.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
How does the Arc Light do.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Well? We went from zero to over one hundred grand
a month in about six months because of primarily St
angelo Lives marketing capabilities and how many people we reach
and uh, you know, sports, high school football is really
really important to us, and so too is Texas country music.
And I thought that we need to have a little
Texas country music venue. We knew how to put people
(11:37):
in seats, and so we went for it. So kind
of a vertical move.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Well, I'm just checking it out right here.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
I like it. I like it.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
That's that's very cool. In the Clarion Hotel.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Yes, sir, right there, and that's the big hotel that's downtown.
Interesting right there on the Concho River, right there on
the cost a very scenic location.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
So when you and I spoke the other day, you
mentioned the statue of Saul Ross being part of this
whole discussion. What happened there?
Speaker 3 (12:11):
Yeah, Soul Ross ib at Aggie. The core Cadets flew
in the Air Force. Blue B fifty twos in the
Air Force and T thirty eight's in the Air Force
and Anyway, I went to Hay and M in the eighties,
graduated from Katie in eighty two, graduate from A and
M and eighty six, And Lawrence Sullivan Ross is a
big part of that. They make you memorize the inscription
(12:34):
on the statue of Lawrence Sullivan Ross. It sits there
in front of the iconic academic building, right there in
the middle of the A and M campus up at
the College station. And during that same time, the woke
mob of twenty twenty wanted to tear down Lawrence Sullivan
(12:55):
Ross's statue. Now what you're talking about history and heritage?
You know I for four years I was, you know
ingrained in my soul, you know, Lawrence Sullivan Ross, Soldier statesman,
nightly gentlemen. The whole inscription on there, that includes Briggadier
General CSA, which is the Confederate States Army.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Do you know they want to inscription memorize to this day.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
Heck yeah, I do. Okay, Lawrence Solvon hold.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
On, hold on, let me get hold on, moan. Could
we get some mess music to a company. You're just
real light, justter moment. If you take everybody, take your
positions on your marks. Raman on your signal, well said,
awkward moment right before the event begins.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
You can hear somebody clearing their throat, all right, go ahead?
Speaker 5 (13:49):
Lawrence Sullivan Ross eighteen thirty eight, eighteen ninety eight, Soldier Statesman,
Nightly Gentlemen, Brigadier General CSA, govern of Texas, President of
the A and M College.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Did I do it right?
Speaker 5 (14:10):
To the music?
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Yeah, I thought we were going to go on alonger
in that.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
That's all there is to it.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
You got something else you could add? I don't know,
maybe the lyrics to free Bird something. Who's your favorite
Texas country artist?
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Well, right now, it's really not a it's not really
a Texas country guy. It's geyfrom Jackson, Mississipy named Sam Donald.
I think that guy. Uh he's he's kind of a
cross between nickel Back three.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
Was it?
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Three Doors Down? And uh Co Wetzel. So he's he's
I like him a lot. You know. I'm good friends
with rich O'Toole and he's on the upswing and he's
a Houston guy. I don't know. I mean, that's those
are the two that I've been kind of working getting
(15:05):
them booked and all that kind of stuff. At the
Arc Light well.
Speaker 8 (15:09):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
All right, very interesting stuff, very interesting stuff. I'm i'm,
I'm impressed with what you're doing. You know, when you
when you roll into a town like San Angelo, you
see that, you know, a sleepy little town, and you
see this, you see this energy, and you see this
guy over here, and you don't know if he's gonna
make it or not, but you see this guy over here.
(15:31):
There's a guy in Belleville. I can't remember the name
of his place. It's three numbers, it's like six' one
one and then the name of the. Street and he
used to be the, chef the family chef for the
Von trapp family Of sound Of music. Fame and he's
a young Fell he lives upstairs from the restaurant, downstairs
and it's him and a bunch of ladies and the
ladies all you, know, COOKING i mean a serve and everything.
(15:53):
Else and he's the, chef and you, know he's got
the burn marks and he's got all this passion and
he's just he's what twenty Two north is that the
name of. It, yeah and you just you hope the
town will support him because he's got it's like the
little engine that could and it's amazing how the older
folks they love when you get some energy come into
a town Like Bud royer would have done to Round,
(16:16):
top you, know forty years, ago and you see, that
AND i see you doing, that AND i JUST i love.
It good on, You San, Angelo, Live Joe. Hyde it's,

each other as to who can be more maga than the.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
You, Know oklahoma is known as where the wind comes
sweeping down the. Plane do not do not try to
sweep that woke into their. State they won't have. It
they won't have it in their. Schools they understand it's
too important to get this.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
Right and so.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
Let me see IF i got the article. Here they
in order to keep woke out of their, schools they
have taken The Teaching Assessment test In california And New.
York and they, say, well if that's the states where
they indoctrinate the teachers with the, leftism we're going to
ask that question and use the right as wrong and
(18:55):
wrong as. RIGHT i love. THIS i love. This they
are basically, saying we're the Anti. California we don't want
fruits and nuts in this. State we don't want them
teaching our. Kids none of. It none of. It and
so what they've done is they have created their own
assessment to make sure that they get good teachers in the.

Speaker 1 (20:48):
Children you.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Are it is your place to institute the values for
your children that you hold. Deer my Friend Josh hammer
was being interviewed a couple of months, ago and he
said that he believed That jews should Marry jews and
(21:10):
share those values and teach those values to their. Children
and it created quite a little stink on the. Internet,
oh how dare You jews should marry? Everybody But, nope,
nope because cultures. Understand you don't go To Saudi arabia and, say,
hey Fellow, saudi y'all should Marry jews And hindus and. Cat,
(21:33):
no they don't do. That, now if you want to
be a person who SAYS i think. Anybody my kids
can marry anybody from any, culture any, religion any whatever.
Else that's. Fine that's fine for you to, do and
we respect. That but that is not a better. Position
it's a different position than SAYING i want my children
(21:56):
to marry our, race our, religion our. Nationality if we're
going to say, that you can say to your, child
you can marry across any, boundary that's. Fine but that's not,
right and everything else is. Wrong and that's where we
that's where we get it incorrect in this, country allowing
(22:18):
the left to, say if you don't say you'll date a,
trainny then you're a bad. Person, nuh you get to say.
That if a woman can Say i'll only date, women
oh so, brave so, stunning then a man can Say
i'll only date women, Too i'm not gonna date. MEN i.
Don't that's perfectly. Acceptable you have to defend old, fashioned
(22:43):
old school values or you will have none. Left that's
that's what you that's what will remain of your society
if you are unashamed to stand up for what you believe.
In god Bless. OKLAHOMA i love this so. Much you
(23:04):
know we're gonna wake up one day in a couple
of years and realize That oklahoma is booming because intellectual
capital is going, there because people of faith are going,
there because because you know what happens when people of,
faith people of values move into your. Communities you know,
what you don't increase? Crime crime the. Left you look
(23:26):
At San, Francisco Los, Angeles New, York, Baltimore, Detroit. Chicago
you look at what has become of these. Places, seattle
a once Great american, City, Hell Downtown, portland they've. Destroyed
that's what the left. Does the impotent policies of the
left allow the, week allow the week to be preyed
upon by the, evil and that that just cannot be. Taller, Congratulations.
(23:52):
OKLAHOMA i love this new. Story love? It you love? It,
ramon what do you love about?
