Speaker 1 (00:03):
It's that time, time, time, Time, Luck and Load from
Michael Vari Show is on the air.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
The US is the first time in the history of
the world where a government was organized with a constitution
laying out the rules that the individual was supreme and gone.
And that is what led to the US becoming the
greatest country ever because it unleashed people to be the
best they could be, unlike it had ever happened. That's
American exceptionalisms.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain
five thirty five years ago? Why the Atlantic? Why does
Rice play Texas? We choose to go to the moon.
We choose to go to the moon. You used to
go to the moon and disscate and do the other thing,

(01:04):
not because they are easy, but because they are hard.

Speaker 4 (01:07):
If we look to the answer as to why for
so many years we achieved so much, prospered as no
other people on Earth, it was because here in this
land we unleash the energy and individual genius of man
to a greater extent than has ever been done before.
Freedom and the dignity the individual have been more available

(01:29):
and assured here than in any other place on Earthly.

Speaker 5 (01:38):
Few a couple of years ago callers, I'll get you

(02:01):
in just a moment. A couple of years ago HISD,
which was so incredibly corrupt. Well, let me put it
to you this way. Rodney Ellis's staff member was the
president of the board. She cycled off the board to

(02:22):
go to the Houston Community College and was working for him.
This is how he keeps He runs all the organizations
in aris Coonty. He is such a boss. It's incredible
how he has managed to pull this off. She was
charged and pled guilty to taking bribes for contracts to

(02:49):
give out contracts on behalf of HISD because there's a
lot of money in this budget. All the while, the
children were great graduating the kids couldn't spell their own name. Now, fairness,
they are hard names to spell, some of them. But
so the state took over HISD. And what did local

(03:13):
democrats scream? You already know racism because that's what they do,
because you're supposed to let the inner city school district fail,
and you're supposed to let all the black and brown
kids fail. And if you dare try to do something
about it the way you would for your own kid,

(03:33):
then you hate black people. This is the most retarded
mindset imaginable. But this is what they do. This is
where the corruption, this is where the bullying, This is
where that game always wins, except this time. So they
send in Mike Miles to be the superintendent. They removed

(03:56):
the board of trustees, and immediately they start saying Miles
is a bad guy. He hates the black people, he's
the digitsu. I think he's black. It's like Casey in
the Sunshine Man. I can't tell, but I think he's black. Well,
here we are HISD. We're told that he's doing a

(04:17):
horrible job. HISD scores on the Star test staa R
for grades eight through eight has the district outperforming the
state in math by about three percentage points. The year
over year HISD is higher. The grades in math and

(04:42):
reading are climbing every year that he's there. This guy
should be heralded as a hero. Instead, what's happened? Houston
Chronicle has hammered him in every turn. They have done
nothing but try to tear this man down. Let's take

(05:05):
third grade math scores twenty twenty three, thirty eight, twenty
twenty four, thirty nine, twenty twenty five, forty six. That
is real progress. Eighth grade math scores twenty twenty three,
twenty eight, last year thirty four, this year forty three.

(05:32):
They're going to mess around and double their star scores.
That's amazing, and that is consistent for every grade third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh,
eighth reading scores fourth grade twenty twenty three, thirty eight,
twenty twenty four, forty five, twenty twenty five, fifty. All

(05:56):
these Democrats who talk about race constantly, if you gave
a damn about the black and brown kids, you would
name a parade for this guy. Look at the results
they're getting. They're beating the state. They're no longer a corrupt,
broken school district. They're outperforming the state average. Trend lines

(06:22):
are important. Nothing is ever static, dynamic static. This means
that next year they're going to continue to go up.
We don't know what the ceiling's going to be. But
now you're changing the culture, and that has to mean
that it's a better environment for teachers, because you know

(06:43):
what good teachers want to do. Teach. They want the
administration to get out of the way and let them teach.
They don't want to do drag shows, they don't want
to go down to Dominican Republican tweet from the beach
that they don't want to go back to school because
the kids all have COVID. They want to teach because
teaching is a very rewarding experience. Somewhat related, HCC, the

(07:09):
Houston Community College just voted to change their name to
Houston City College, so six' three. Vote it's estimated to
cost two point eight million. Dollars over fifty signs have
to be changed From Houston Community college To Houston City.
College they can still be CALLED. Hcc i'm the don't

(07:33):
waste taxpayer. Money, Yeah i'm one hundred percent in favor of.
This spend four, MILLION i don't give a. Damn spend it,
wisely but spend what you need to spend to change
the name and change the. Image we got a lot
of people in this country who didn't grow up like

(07:54):
you and. Me we say we were, poor but not that,
poor and we had parents that loved, us and we
had teachers that loved, us and coaches that loved, us
and aunts and uncles and grandma's and. Grandpa's we've got
people in our community who didn't have, that and they're

(08:15):
not going to go to a and m or ut
OR TCU smu for them to be able to now
you now get a four year degree program for pennies
on the. DOLLAR i am all for. This this is,
great wonderful way to, go. GUYS i love it On
Mike Hulberry. Show so in circumstances a friend of mine
Named Del. Busick he he's one of the franchisees With Serter,

(08:42):
pro the professional, painters and he used to work At
iHeart BEFORE i was At. iHeart in, FACT i Met.
Dale he was head of political. Advertising so if you
were a candidate or officeholder running for office and you
wanted to buy campaign you wanted to buy, commercials he

(09:04):
was a guy you went. To and so he left
AS i was coming. On it's kind of funny. Timing
we've remained friends through it. All he's a West pointer
and he sent me a message and he said thanks
for the kind of words About Mike. Miles he's a West.
Pointer he's a great man and he has a thankless.
Job AND i can't change that. Overnight BUT i do

(09:26):
think we should start talking publicly because the proofs in
the pudding and the numbers don't. LIE i know your
immediate reaction is standardized tests are. STUPID i get. THAT i.
DO i understand. That and let me say something that

(09:46):
will not be. Popular the mindset behind standardized. Tests AND
i know, teachers just hear me, Out just hear me.
OUT i know you know more about this THAN i.
DO i admit. It i've not been a teacher of.
CHILDREN i get. That the reasoning behind it was failing,

(10:07):
schools and there was no way to account for the
fact that you had teachers that came into the, classroom
turned the television, on told the kids to play on
their phone while they themselves went and posted On, instagram
and never taught the kids a damn. Thing and that's
not what we taxpayers expect to. Happen but there was

(10:29):
no way to prove, it there was no way to judge,
it and so you had to have some degree of.
Accountability so then what, Happens, well we have to teach
to the. Test let me just throw something out. There
AND i know half of you are married to, teachers
because it always seems like, that or maybe you're just
the ones that email me some of those teachers bitching

(10:54):
or bitching because they don't want to be. Measured WHEN
i was a, baby LAWYER i had to account for
my time every fifteen. Minutes so you had to input
your time every, day you, know thirty minutes on this
file and you put the file. Code and that's how
clients were. Built, well if you take thirty minutes to go,

(11:15):
poop that's thirty minutes that you turned the taxi cab.
Off that's thirty minutes the firm doesn't get. Paid you
became so conscious of your time that you, felt you
know that feeling when you know you got to get
up early and you've stayed up too. Late so you
get into bed and you get in your head and
you go because this happens to me a. Lot oh,

(11:36):
crap it's twelve thirty AND i got to be up
at three forty. Five and you start, going, well IF
i get IF i go to sleep right, NOW i
got three hours and fifteen. MINUTES i better get to sleep.
FAST i better sleep, now because IF i sit here
for five minutes thinking about, this that's five less MINUTES
i got and only got three hours and fifteen. Minutes
and let's, see that's one hundred and eighty one hundred

(11:57):
and ninety. Five that's two and a half percent of the.
Time AND I i could have already been, sleeping Then
i've already wasted. Right Mike miles has done a phenomenal
job in an environment that was determined for him to.
Fail he had to motivate, people many of whom didn't
want him. There he had to start with kids that

(12:21):
are not being taught at. Home and, LOOK i don't
care how tough you. ARE i want to send criminals to.
PRISON i don't want them to get. OUT i don't
want every kid to become a. CRIMINAL i don't want
to give up on the black and brown. KIDS i
don't want to give up on the poor. KIDS i
don't want to give up on the kids that nobody
gave a damn. About don't confuse me with someone who, says,

(12:46):
well if they commit a, murder bless their heart they
had A, no this doesn't work like. That BUT i
would like those kids to have every opportunity my kid.
Had i'd like them to have as close to a
playing field as you. Can AND i know how you
replicate my wife and me in their. LIVES i don't
know how you replicate the fact that we had great
teachers without exception from preschool on with whom we had

(13:11):
great relations because we made sure we did in constant.
COMMUNITY i don't know how you replicate that he doesn't
have those. Opportunities he's got a dance with the one
that brung, him he's got the kids that are already
showing up to, class and he's got the teachers that
are already on the. Payroll he can't turn those over.
Overnight and yet he managed to take this ragtag. TEAM
i say ragtag because that's what The stars test, revealed

(13:34):
and he managed to do pretty darn good with. It
and why is he not being talked? About this is
stand by me level. Stuff this is movie. Worthy should
be the other. Issue somebody, SAID i thought you weren't
for every kid going to. College why an't you talking about.
That i'm not for every kid going to, college BUT

(13:55):
i also recognize that some kids are going to want
to go for some level of education after high, school
if for nothing else than to improve their self. Esteem
that's a, fact and you're not going to change. That
and these kids graduated eighteen years, old and guess, what
we got a lot more jobs available than we ever
did because the illegals are on their way, out and

(14:18):
you've got a lot of kids coming out of high
school here who we're going to have to give chances
to and not just busting rocks and hauling stuff and
cleaning stuff and wiping. Stuff we're going to have to
give opportunities in our workplaces and train people and build
them up and be their. Mentors that's how you fix a.

(14:40):
Society Houston Community college didn't offer four year, degrees but
now there are certain subject, matter certain degree programs that
they're able to offer a four year degree for pennies
on the. Dollar Rick perry's greatest accomplishment as governor that
got no, press AND i only know because my wife

(15:02):
was on the border regions at the, time was the
ten thousand dollars. Degree he wanted the universities to commit
to making a ten thousand dollars degree. Possible that if
you did things, right you took your, courses you didn't
stay in the, dorm you could get a, degree a
four year degree for ten thousand. Dollars that is a
noble and worthy. Goal The Michael Berry, Show well did

(15:28):
you go See? METALLICA i had a lot of friends
that went to See. Metallica would you like to See?
Metallica tell me five bands in descending order from one to.
Five i'll give you ten seconds to think about. It
that are performing today that you would most like to go.

(15:49):
See i'll make some noise while we're waiting on, you
because we can't have dead. Air all, right Go metallica's number. One, no,

(16:11):

Touring they just? Started, okay all, right? Okay, Next, YELLOW
i didn't Know yellow was Man. MAN i would Love

(16:35):
that's one of those dream come true kind of. THINGS
i would like to sit In Jeffrey lynn's. Home you
saw the, video, right Mister Blue. SKY i would like
to sit there with, him both of, us barefoot like
he wasn't that in him with the, ukulele and just
ask him questions and you know how where did this

(16:55):
little piece of this composition come? From and sit there
and go into each room that he's got a different Acoust,
oh dream come. True. Anyway, next that's a good, One. Metallica,
okay that's only, three but, yeah one more work because
You're i'm kind of getting bored because you take it so.

(17:15):

say Z Eazy. Top And i'm going to See Zazy
top At Red Rocks august, fourth AND i get to
hang out with the band before and after the. Show thank.
You courtesy Of Frank. Beard, yeah it's a little bit
of a presumptive, clothes But i've been told there's a
very good likelihood it's going to. Happen, yeah And i've

(17:38):
never been to a show At Red. Rocks i've been
To Red, rocks But i've never been to a show with,
there have? You, oh well you're not. Coming, no you're
not coming with me than? That, NO i can't have, it,
no BECAUSE i can't be distracted at that, time and
when you're, there it's always like can we do? THIS
i want to be focused on the band and the
music and my. EXPERIENCE i don't want to have to

(17:59):
baby's at. You i'm Getting oh, yeah, Okay i'll think about.
It why didn't you say it Is Eazy. Top you
ever seen s e Z top in? CONCERT i, Did,
yeah it was, quick but that should have been something
that popped in your mind right. Then august, Fourth Red.
Rocks you know that's what's going to. Happen, also we
got to figure out what to do for my, birthday

(18:20):
and there's no reason to act like it's going to
be a surprise or someone else did. It i'm gonna
plan it because my fifty fifth. Birthday and we haven't
done anything fun for five years because OF covid and
everything we had going. ON i, mean we haven't done
anything big SINCE, rcc except we Did Republic Grand, ranch

(18:40):
which was. Fun we've done a couple of twenty nine.
Twenties but we're. Due we're due in five. Years we
have not done enough fun. STUFF i see how excited
friends of mine get over like The metallica, concert AND i,
go you, know you got to have something fun like.
That my Brother chris would say he Loved Roger, craigor

(19:01):

i book the. Bands if he's, COMING i know when he's.
Coming he's not coming to Late. Spring, Yeah april ninth
or whatever it, Was, chris It's. January i'm not getting
excited over something In. April In. JANUARY i live moment to,
moment not. Me i'm fired Up. February, Hey, bud you're

(19:44):
getting fired up a bout That craiger. Do how a
many CONCERTS i have between now and? Then but people need.
That i've come to realize that's. Important people need. That
they want. That they want they want a big event
to be excited. About if they're going To disney in
and you, know if somebody's going To disney In october right,
now they're talking about. It they're playing and they're getting

(20:07):
their clothes, ready they're looking at where they're gonna eat
all their. Meals nothing wrong with. That people like to
look ahead to something that's, happening and that gets them
through the day to. DAY i do a different approach
doesn't make me, Better not saying it makes me. Better
my approach is to live in this moment right now
and try to derive as much joy happen as contentment

(20:32):
purpose AS i can out of this. Moment BUT i
also realize why people want those big. Events So, RAMONA
i need you to think About november, tenth my. Birthday
we don't what the Tsar? Noville what are you doing
like an all day. Festival, well the good news IS
i was lucky enough to be born in a month

(20:52):
where it won't be. Hot but remember It Republic Grand,
ranch it was. COLD i was bundled. Up ooh, man
people got. MAD i showed up. Late oh my. Goodness
uh something. HAPPENED i don't. Remember if my tummy was tore,
up or something happened with the. KIDS i don't, remember but,
oh people were. Mad you were supposed to be here,
already AND i, Said i'm not the. Show the show

(21:15):
is you and everybody. Else i'm Sorry i'm, late but, Anyway,
Plus Republic Grand ranch sold a lot of houses or
a lot of home. Sites SO i considered that a.
Win it was a good for those people who wanted
to have a good. Time it was a. Win but
that one woman wanted Her remember she wanted her daughter
to get up on stage and play the. Fiddle so
she Pulls rico to the side and she, goes my
daughter plays the. Fiddle can she get up there and

(21:36):
play with? Them so we're on stage and we, go,
guys CAN i put her up on? Stage she just real,
QUICK i, said real. Quick she started and it was, like,
okay that was Cute Ricky skaggs for a little, while
but can we let Belven roe play again? Now and
she stayed up there forever and it just created a
slight amount of. Awkwardness you, Know i've never brought that

(21:56):
up To rico't that funny? Way so stop distracting. Me november,
tenth we got to figure out what we're going to,
do where we're going to do, it what we're going to,
do and how it's going to come. About by the,
way we're not doing bring a covered, dish you'd. Goober
by the, way if you don't have a bumper sticker

(22:18):
on your vehicle to tell the world that you are
a proud supporter of our show and a member of our,
tribe you can get two free bumper stickers and A
gringo's gift. Card just go to our. Website it's the top.
Box as long as that box is up. There we
still have bumper stickers, left and those will be mailed to.
You it looks like you have to pay for it

(22:39):
because the program we use is a purchase, program but
when you fill out your information where to mail, it
it will just it'll say you don't actually owe any.
Money when you go to check, out it'll show you
don't owe any, money and those will be. Sent and
be patient Because Belinda folks And Jim folks and their
team at MY R houston will be batching. Those so

(23:02):
for every two thousand, requests they'll send them. Out it's
just more. Efficient it takes a lot of staff time
to do those because each one has to be done by,
hand but they will be out to you. Shortly and, Yeah,
SAMON i want you to come up with some ideas
for the birthday. Party fifty five, twelve that's thirteen years

(23:23):
older Than elvis Made captain something.

Speaker 6 (23:26):
Wong, well something must be. Right you are listening To Michael.
Berry SO i.

Speaker 5 (23:38):
Was thinking to, myself you, know because Drunk mark sent
me a bunch of emails AND i was thinking of
blocking him because you, know when somebody wants me to
do something and it makes it on the. AIR a

(24:02):
lot of people will say you got to do, it
AND i go easy for you to, say, hey you
don't have to do. It and it's never, just you,
know five minutes of radio. Airtime it ends up being
hours and. Headaches and the more involved you get with

(24:24):
somebody like Drunk, bark at some point you always regret.
It there's no doubt because he will suck the life
out of. You AND i know, this and this is
the REASON i come off as an ask to people
and they, go, hey can you help so and? So
can you do? This can you? Do? No, no you do.
It i'm pulled in a hundred different directions and five

(24:47):
hours of radio a day and another almost two hours of.
Production i'm. Busy you do. IT i have to be
careful to keep to stay in my lane and know my.
Limitations otherwise the show starts to. Suffer and that's what.
Matters the show is the number one thing it has to.
Be So i've decided at that, Point i'm not going

(25:08):
to do anything to help Drunk mark because because Drunk
mark's not ready to help, himself and SO i had
DECIDED i was comfortable with. That but The Southern baptist in.
Me the deep abide In christian faith believes in, redemption

(25:30):
and stories of redemption are very powerful to. Me when
somebody tells me what a, skiedrow, alcoholic, heroin, addict gambling at,
it you name, it they, were and they managed to
get themselves out of that. RUT i admire, THAT i really.

(25:52):
DO i have such great respect for. That so THEN i, said, no, no, no,
no don't let yourself get. Food Drunk mark is just
looking for his next, target his next crutch to get
him down the. Road he's not ready to. CHANGE i
don't hear anything about him that says he's ready to.
Change So i've written Drunk mark all And i'm thinking
about my Uncle, preston who was a was a very

(26:16):
very bad. Alcoholic Preston. Wayne it was his first and middle.
Name it's when my mother called Him Press. Wayne it
was all winn Press. Wayne BUT i was very close
to my Uncle, president and he would come my dad
didn't want us on a. Motorcycle his motorcycles was, dangerous
so when my dad was at, work he'd come by
and picked me up on his motorcycle and had a
sissy bar on the. Back SO i liked that BECAUSE

(26:37):
i felt more safe AND i could hold onto that
and we'd tool around. Town and he was a, mechanic
and a very good. Mechanic and he always had like
A barracuda or a cougar souped up ss, whatever and
it was all these great muscle cars of the late,
sixties early, seventies mop hit. Up he had a was

(27:00):
that of seventy. Two it's they're. Hideous they're absolutely. Hideous
they like Spaceships. Mustang but they were incredibly, fast and
he drove like a. Maniac but alcohol took him and
it just sapped the life out of, him and he
died young and broke my. Heart BUT i have such
fond memories of. Him and his name Was. President he

(27:21):
was my Uncle. Preston So i'm thinking About Uncle pression
AND i, thought you know how many People WHEN i
was a, kid my mom would, say you know that
certain guy in town who has a business Took Uncle
preston in and he helped him out When Uncle presso
got out of a, rusk he gave him a job and
this person AND i remember, thinking you, know there's good
people out there that helped my Uncle. Presst So i'm
thinking about that But i've written a Drunk. Mark often

(27:42):
it's fifteen minutes Since i've looked at Drunk march's, emails
And i'm trying to, decide AND i had DECIDED i
wasn't going to do. Anything and for the only time
out of one hundred, emails he sent me, ramoned not
knowing any of What i've just told. You do you
know what Drunk mark? Wrote, no he, didn't, Right i'm
sorry subject line instead of Drunk. Mark for the one

(28:06):
and only time out of one hundred emails he sent,
me it SAID i forget his last, name but it
Said Mark. Preston maybe It's, cole just LIKE i can't
remember his last, Name AND i, thought, man is that my?
Sign you, know if you go looking for, signs you'll find.
Him preston's not the most uncommon, name but it Ain't

(28:29):
michael Or, Wayne christopher Or ramone Or jose Or juan.
Anyway SO i guess What i'm asking is if there's
somebody out there who is a lawyer who could handle
his case pro, Bono i'll do my best to make

(28:51):
it up to. YOU i can't be the one to do,
it AND i don't need a daily UPDATE i got
enough things going. On but if there's somebody out there who,
says you know, what let's give this goofy bastard one
more chance and see if we can't straighten it. Up
BECAUSE i do have a heart for the fact, that
in A Jean valjean, way once you run a fallow,
system your problems and they're all of his own, MAKING

(29:14):
i understand, it your problems just begin to. Snowball and
so you, know he's been at The Salvation army AND
i don't think his work ethic is real. Good but
he did say that he was trying to find a,
job but they couldn't get him a job because he
didn't HAVE. Id so my Buddy Michael robinson, said tell
him to get his butt up to himstead and get

(29:35):
AN id to start with his fear as he goes
in to get THE, id and he gets arrested right,
then and then he's stuck in jail for a. WHILE
i don't think they'll ever send him to, prison but
they could keep him in jail for quite some, time
and obviously he's scared about. THAT i see that. COMING
i don't. Know it's not a tidy. Story it wraps up,
nicely it doesn't fit within the within the, clock or

(29:56):
we go to break with. IT i don't know the,
answer BUT i would like to think that that somebody
out there could help him one last. Time and by the,
Way i'm the first one to, say the minute he
blows your, kindness you cut and run because you can't
let a guy like this continue to abuse your. Kindness

(30:16):
AND i bet there's a lot of people along the
way that he. Has it also breaks my, Heart i'll
be completely, honest to watch somebody destroying their own life
and seemingly unable to figure out how to make it,
stop BECAUSE i truly believe in all of us that
we all have the ability to screw up our own.

(30:38):
Life and that's not to say that we've been lucky
and he has. It maybe that part is. True there's
accountability in all of. That BUT i do think that
you made me, snort, Mom, no WHAT i? DO i really.

Speaker 3 (30:55):
DO i.

Speaker 5 (30:57):
Think in every mark there's a person who's say as you,
know if you met, me you know twenty five years,
ago you wouldn't believe. IT i was a normal. PERSON

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
