Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Michael Berry Show, A Little story from Houston. Like
to report on what's going on in Houston, even if
you don't live within the city limits. There has been
rampant corruption City of Houston government. We had a mayor
by the name of Sylvester Turner, and he was black,
and he was corrupt, and if you criticized his corruption
(00:23):
and incompetence, he would call you racist. He was very
good friends with Sheila Jackson Lee. You do the math, well,
this is how bad things work. Our current Mayor, John
Whipmer has been forced to stop payment of an of
eight million dollars to a contractor charged with bribery for
(00:44):
giving a kickback to the water department manager who's now
been convicted, named Patrice Lee. After Public Works said there
should still be a payment, public Works gave a cutnotes.
(01:07):
I think it's he. I don't know if it's a
man or woman, it's a crook. I know that public
Works said even after he was arrested for taking a
bribe that they still gave another contract. You can't make
this stuff up. Listen to this. This is a KPRCTV
clip number eighteen.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Mayor Whitmeyer and several city Council members said that this
criminal defendant and business owner should not receive any money
from the City of Houston, but they said the subcontractors
who may have done work under that contract shouldn't be
penalized for work that they legitimately completed.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
I don't think Neery Constructions should get a dollar. I
think they should have to fight for what they think
they earned.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
The owner of Neery Construction, Joseph Neary, pleaded guilty to
gift to a public servant in exchange for prosecutors dropping
his bribery and tampering with government documents charges. The Texas
Rangers say he paid water maintenance manager Patrees Lee more
than seventy seven thousand dollars over a fifteen month period,
while the emergency contract she awarded him balloon from more
(02:13):
than one million to more than eight million dollars. The
Rangers say he paid Lee through cash, app and personal checks.
Nieri and others are debarred or banned from receiving any
future city business, but Public Works recommended council approve paying
Neari eight point three million dollars for work he started
(02:34):
before the grand jury indicted him.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
I would think for the behavior that took place. We
should have ironclad language that no, you're not going to
get paid, and maybe that would even discourage anybody tempted
to do anything like this in the future.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
The mayor directed City Legal and Public Works to look
at the bill again, to.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Review the work orders and see that the subs are paid.
That nearly construction and Joseph and his brother received no
city dollars.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
And even though the city's chief procurement officer told KPRC
two that public Works awarded nearly another contract last year
after the guilty plea, Jededi Greenfield told us his office
put a hold on that contract.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
When we see someone that's under investigation in our accounting system,
we can put a hold. What that hold does is
it says, do not release any purchase orders, do not
release any payment. That wraps our Sunday Bonus podcast. This
episode anyway, and if you enjoyed it, send me an email.
