This is Your Health First, the most beneficial health program
on radio with doctor Joe Bellotti. During the next hour,
you'll learn about health, wellness and the prevention of disease.
Now here's your host, doctor Joe Bellotti.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Well, a good Sunday evening to everybody. Doctor Joe Galotti,
thanks for tuning in in part of your weekend with
me and our team here on Your Health First. We
hear every Sunday between seven and apm Central Time, broadcasting
from our world headquarters here at seven forty KTIH and
(01:16):
around the globe on the iHeartRadio app. So really there
is no excuse not to catch us every Sunday evening.
And certainly if you have a friend, a family member,
a coworker that you want to share this message with,
just give them the link to the radio program on
the iHeartRadio app. And certainly we will make everybody better
(01:41):
consumers of healthcare by raising your Health IQ. That is
what we've been saying for twenty two years, and really
the mission over that time has has not changed. So
to get in touch with me and our program. It
is doctor Joegalotti dot com, d R J O E
(02:01):
G A L A t I dot com. All of
our social media is there. You can find out about
my practice, Liver Specialists of Texas, where we take care
of people with liver disease. Yes, indeed, I am a hepatologist,
which is a subspecialty of gastronurology. But more and more
(02:22):
we are seeing liver disease. And so I've been in
this field for quite a long time, but liver disease
and popularity as far as the number of cases is
going up. And a lot of this is directly related
to obesity and chronic disease that we're seeing. But that's
what I do when I'm not on the radio here
with everybody, doctor Joe Galotti dot com. All right, so, uh,
(02:46):
you know, for for this evening. You know, here we
are in November, November ninth, and Thanksgiving is just a
few weeks away. Christmas is a month and two weeks
or whatever, six weeks away, but everybody starts thinking about
holiday gift giving, and every year, as long as we've
(03:09):
been doing the show, we around this time of the
year sort of this pre Thanksgiving timeframe, we start talking
about mindful gifts that are healthful that may actually contribute
to somebody's health and wellness, the reduction of chronic disease,
make them happier, make them healthier. So there are you know,
(03:34):
a handful of things that really will make somebody more healthy.
And it's when I look at the you know, the
transcripts of five years ago, ten years ago, fifteen years ago,
we're almost talking about the same things because the things
of today that I'm going to chat about for a
moment have really not changed, and the problem in a sense,
(04:00):
has only gotten bigger. And so it's not as if ten, fifteen,
twenty years ago I had an idea or a gadget
to buy and that gadget faded away or a certain
trend went away. It's actually the opposite. Things are getting
a little worse from a health and wellness standpoint. So,
you know, tonight, I'll spend a few minutes going over
(04:23):
these things, but I do want you to take heed
in what I'm saying. So this is probably the I
don't want to say the corniest thing you could buy,
but I would say, for you know, a lot of
the times people will gift their family a gift, they'll
buy something. Okay, this is for everybody, mom, dad, the kids, grandma,
(04:49):
et cetera. So this is something that is applicable for everybody.
And like I said, it's a little bit corny. I
don't think anyone's gonna say, wow, look with dad got
me this year. But I would say, do you have
a functioning blood pressure cuff? Now, remember doctor Joe Glotti
(05:10):
preaching health and wellness prevention of disease. With the amount
of hypertension, high blood pressure that's out there. First of all,
I do believe everybody should have an up to date,
up to date meaning you know, not fifteen years old,
because the technology in these blood pressure cuffs has gotten better.
(05:31):
But a working blood pressure cuff, not the one that
goes on your wrist. That is a joke. If you
go anywhere and someone in the clinic puts a blood
pressure cuff on your wrist, tell them you don't want
to have it taken it it's going to be inaccurate.
But if you have a decent blood pressure cuff for
(05:53):
your arm. The one company that I would say most
health experts believe is the best quality is it's a
company called Omron Omron, and you can get these on Amazon,
you can get them at Target, you can get them
at Costco. But you want to make sure everybody in
(06:13):
your family has had their blood pressure check. Now, as
you all know, or you should know. You know, high
blood pressure has been come to be known as the
silent killer. Now why the silent killer? Well, you do
not have to have symptoms of high blood pressure. You
(06:37):
may not have a headache, you may not have blurred vision,
you may not have any chest pain, You're just tooling
around like regular. But you could be harboring high blood
pressure in the upper levels, near dangerous levels, and have
absolutely no symptoms until you have a stroke, you have
(07:01):
a heart attack, go into kidney failure, you develop an arrhythmia,
and something more serious happens, and you're standing there in
the emergency room and the doctor says, hey, did you
know that you've had high blood pressure or you have
high blood pressure? And you say, well, you know, I
didn't know, but I felt well, But doctor, I felt well,
(07:21):
I had no symptoms. Well that is the nature of
high blood pressure. So you know, one thing you can
do is is depending on who you live with, it's
your spouse, your girlfriend, your boyfriend, just a roommate, get
a blood pressure cuff. And what you can do is
(07:42):
one Saturday morning a month, just say, okay, we're going
to take everybody's blood pressure and see that it's still
under the normal range. Now, the tricky part here is
that in the last several years, the American Heart Association
and other medical organization have dropped what the blood pressure
(08:05):
goal for adults has been. It used to be roughly
one thirty over seventy. Let's say one thirty is the
top number that's a systolic blood pressure. It has dropped
to one twenty. So there are people out there, and
I see this every day in my practice. Patient's coming
with blood pressureself one forty one fifty and their primary
(08:28):
care doctor basically says, well, you know, it's not that bad.
Try to work hard on your diet, cut the salt,
try to exercise, lose a little weight. But the thing
is people don't do it, and so they never check
that blood pressure again until they go back to the
doctor six months later or maybe a year or two later.
And so if you are monitoring it yourself, you go
(08:50):
to the doctor and they say, look, Bob you've got
some hypertension. Today in my office, it's one forty five
over eighty five. Try to eat better, exercise, get more sleep,
cut out the salt, cut out the processed foods, and
let's see how it goes. Now, they may put you
on medicine. They may say watch it. How could you
watch it if you don't have a blood pressure cough.
(09:10):
So if you have that blood pressure cough, or maybe
your wife gets that message or your girlfriend gets that
message from the doctor, you can now start checking the
blood pressure, make some intervention with regard to diet, exercise,
weight loss, stress reduction, get more sleep, and you could
go back to the doctor after two weeks and say,
you know what, I've tried all these things. The blood
(09:32):
pressure is not coming down. It's not moving down to
that one twenty range. So again, as corny as it sounds,
it may not be the sexiest gift, but I will
tell you it will impact the life of those around
you and your own life. So it is a great gift.
(09:53):
Give it, give yourself a gift, go out by, get
an early Christmas present, buy one today, order it on Amazon.
All right, so we're gonna take a quick break. Doctor
Joe Galotti. Doctor Joeglotti dot com is our website. Stay tuned,
We'll be back. I'm going to get into zombies. They say, zombies.
(10:13):
What the hell does zombies have to do with healthcare?
Stay tuned you'll find out, all right. Well, a little
grateful dead for everybody on this Sunday evening, Doctor Joe Galotti,
You're tuned into your Health First every Sunday between the
hour of seven and eight pm Central Time. Don't forget
you can always catch us on the iHeartRadio app Coast
(10:35):
to coast. Share this programming with your friends, and don't
forget our website Doctor Joeglotti dot com. You can signer
for our newsletter. There you can get a copy of
my book Eating Yourself Sick, which is now out in paperback,
and all of our other social media, YouTube, our practice website,
(10:56):
information about liver disease. Our blog is our podcast. Is
there past episodes of Your Health First, but you have
to go to doctor Joeglotti dot com to check things out.
So I was talking about blood pressure in the last segment,
and I received a couple of text messages from our
(11:19):
great audience, and they said, hey, we need a little
bit more information. How big of a problem really is
high blood pressure or hypertension? And when you look at
it first, you have to understand that the vast majority
of people, one out of two fifty percent of all
(11:41):
of us are going to die from cardiovascular disease. Now,
I don't think you should just take that as a
you know, a situation where you're like, well, I'm going
to die of something, I might as well die of
a stroke. Now, you don't want to die of a stroke.
You don't want to have a stroke when you're forty
five years old and be a vegetable the rest of
your life and be a total burden on your family
(12:02):
and your kids. So that's where understanding what the problem
is so that you can enter vene and not just
be some ignorant bystander and all this. You know, I
tell everybody, good health is not by accident. You have
to be an active participant. This is this is a
(12:26):
situation where you can't just pray that you get better.
It's not going to happen. So in twenty twenty three,
high blood pressure was either the primary or contributing cause
of six hundred and sixty five deaths in the United
States all right, nearly half of adults have high blood pressure,
(12:51):
that's about forty eight percent. And this is defined here. Again,
you have to know what the definition is. A systolic
blood pressure the top number one thirty or greater, or
a diastolic blood pressure the bottom number of eighty or higher.
Okay only and this is sort of the sad part.
(13:13):
Only about one in four, about twenty two percent of
people with high blood pressure had their blood pressure under control.
So this tells you a couple of things. Number One,
people are not taking their medicine. They're not eating properly,
they're not exercising, they're not getting enough sleep even though
they're taking medicine. Okay, So just because you're on medicine
(13:37):
doesn't mean you get a free pass out of jail.
You really have to make sure that it is actively addressed. Okay. Now, no,
And that's why I said, get a blood pressure cuff
(13:58):
at home. And I cannot you how many people that
I take care of do not have a blood pressure
cuff at home. Now A lot of the time. Somebody
told me the other day, Oh, I go to the pharmacy,
and I said, the pharmacist takes it. No, there's a
machine there. Now, that is one step above. This is
(14:19):
me speaking, That is one step above going to an
arcade machine. I do not think that these you know,
it's I'm sure you've seen. It's like a seat. You
stick your arm into this device and it tightens up.
You have no idea if it's if it's accurate, but
that is what you're going off. And if it is
wildly inaccurate and it underestimates your blood pressure, then you're
(14:45):
going to walk away with a false sense of security saying, ah,
my blood pressure is okay. I don't have to worry
until you start having headaches and a stroke and and
something bad happens. But the notion, and well what I
was gonna say, The notion is that you have to
have symptoms. And people have sort of this crazy notion
(15:05):
that as long as I don't have any symptoms, something
doesn't hurt me, well, then I'm just going to turn
a blind eye. And that is really a bad approach
because I could tell you twenty five things that may
not give you any symptoms, but it could be brewing
(15:26):
rather seriously under the surface that you need to get
this taken care of. And I think considering the vast
number of people that have hypertension. This is something that
we need to take care of. And you know, I
guess with your family, you have to look at your children. Now,
if you look at childhood, obesity is on the rise.
(15:48):
And if you just take that for a second, childhood obesity. Okay,
so childhood you're talking about, you know, ten to eighteen
years old. Well, these ten to eighteen year olds are
now twenty two years old. They are now twenty eight
years old. And there cannot be the sense that well,
(16:08):
he or she is an adult. My daughter has her
own life. Well that's true. I mean, you don't need
to be a total buttinski and micromanage what they do.
But I think from a health and wellness standpoint of
your family, we do need to talk about this. We
do need to get someone involved. We do need to
(16:31):
share articles that you find or share this program. Share
this Eventually this will be up as a podcast. You
could share it and say, look, hey, I'm not forcing you.
I just want you to be exposed to this information
that you are a little overweight, you are eating out
a lot, you have had the doctor told you you
(16:52):
are pre diabetic, aka you're at risk for high blood pressure.
So I do think that the notion this all started
talking about a Christmas present, we're going to give everybody
that blood pressure come. It will do two things. One
check your blood pressure, but number two, it will open
(17:13):
a dialogue to people to read about it, talk about it,
check in without one another, and just have a greater
community around everybody's health, wellness and happiness. So all right,
with that news, wather and traffic is going to be
coming up in just a minute. I'm doctor Joe Glotti.
Don't forget doctor Joeglotti dot com. Stay tuned. I promise
(17:35):
we're going to get around the zombies in a minute.
Stay tuned. Welcome back everybody, Doctor Joe Glotti, Thanks for
tuning in. Don't forget Doctor Joe Galotti dot com is
our website, soner for own news letter. It comes out every.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
Saturday or Sunday on the weekend, keeping everybody up to
date on the latest health and wellness breakthroughs sort of
what we're doing, and overall it is just making you
a better.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
Consumer of healthcare. All right. So, as I was saying earlier,
there is and this was actually brought to my attention
by a colleague of mine On Friday, I was walking
around the hospital and a good friend of mine called
me over and he said, do you know about zombie cells?
(18:20):
And I'm like, zombie cells, you know, not really, I've
heard about it, and he said you should, you should
talk about this on the radio. And so I went
home on Friday afternoon, and on Saturday I was researching
it out a bit. And I do think that, as
funny as it sounds to say, hey, you've got zombie
cells and we have to take care of it. A
(18:41):
lot of this work has been generated at the male clinic,
but there are people all over the world that are
looking at the zombie cells. So let's just take a
step back. Why do we get sick and why do
we age? Well, basically, our cells start to die. And
(19:02):
if you lose cells in a particular organ like your heart,
like your brain, like your muscles, like your bones, you're
going to have damage to that tissue. It's not going
to function as well or do what it's supposed to do,
and we become ill, and we age and we die.
(19:26):
And so researchers for two hundred years have been looking
at the fountain of youth and how do we prevent
aging and dying. And the other thing is, and we
have talked about this before, the approach to healthcare, and
it should be your approach to your own wellness is
beyond simply life expectancy. How long are you going to live?
(19:50):
That is a number. You're born at one time and
you die at another. That is your life expectancy, and
it varies around the world based on a lot of
different factors. But we have always looked at a barometer
of how well a person's doing or how well a
culture is doing, based on their life expectancy. But now,
(20:12):
and we've talked about this before, we have to look
at life span. So we want to see the quality
of life that that person is at. So you could say, hey,
my grandmother lived to the ripe old age of ninety,
but she was in a nursing home. She was demented,
(20:35):
she had not traveled to a birthday party in ten years.
She could not walk, she cannot feed herself, she cannot
get on a stationary bicycle if her life depended on it.
So life span would be yes. My grandmother lived till
eighty five. She was traveling, she was exercising, she was swimming,
(20:58):
she was going to yoga. She was still baking and
cooking and showing up and taking care of the grandkids.
That is much different. Life span is what we have
to talk about. So when we get into life span,
which should be a word you're all familiar with, we
(21:18):
really have to understand what provides us with better life span,
better quality of life. We're not talking about quantity of life.
It is a quality of life. And so going back
on the science, the cells that are getting old and
damaged and dying, these are called sinesse it cells. These
(21:42):
are the old cells now as cells sens okay, their
state of growth is arrested. The cells are not dividing
in a normal way. So damage to sell all the cells,
the billions of cells that make us up. And then
(22:03):
they're particular the DNA, the DNA inside the cells. This
is due to natural aging process and environmental factors cigarette smoke, eating, nutrition,
stress that causes cells to become sinesse it. They get
old and they die. So what happens is these old
(22:26):
sinesse it cells no longer divide and differentiate. They're not
reproducing to be brain cells, kidney cells, heart cells, liver cells,
et cetera. Now, when they lose their ability to repair
tissue because they're not dividing. This is where these zombie
(22:49):
cells arise. So these sinesseic cells that are they're basically
on the decline. They are secreting harmful proteins and chemicals,
creating this toxic environment within our body. Locally, okay, so
(23:12):
it may be a part of the body heart, lung, brain,
but if not, globally, they disrupt function to these stem cells.
And the stem cells are the master cells that make
all the cells in rest of the body. So in
a sense, locally you may have some inflammation and the
(23:33):
heart cells aren't dividing, and they're getting old and sort of,
you know, dying off these zombie cells that are not
quite dead yet, right, what's a zombie sort of half alive,
half dead. These zombie cells are creating local toxins, but
globally throughout the whole body, they may affect the function
(23:55):
of your stem cells, and that can really really drain
your body from its ability to repair and heal. Now,
a lot of research is going on trying to figure
out what do we do with these cells, how do
they form, how could we eliminate them? They are finding
(24:18):
and the research is looking especially at the male clinic.
Have found that removing these sinesset cells, these zombie cells,
could halt the aging process and restore the body's ability
to regenerate an organism or at least stay healthy and
not decline. And they're looking at genetic strategies to see
(24:42):
how they could maybe manipulate the genetic profile of these cells,
and pharmacologic strategies. Are there interventions with medications that you
can clear and the research this is the interesting part.
Researchers have shown sines it cells clearance improves age related
(25:04):
diseases of the lung, bones, vastucular chure that bring kidney, liver,
and other organs. So we want to get these sinesse
it cells, these zombie cells out of our body. Okay,
Now where does the research lie. So they're looking actually
at some immune therapy, actually chemotherapy. It's not a bad
(25:27):
I don't want to use chemotherapy like a bad word,
but therapeutic interventions. But really exercise okay, and I'll talk
about this a little bit more in the next segment.
Exercise is regenerative medicine, So exercise and healthy diets can
(25:48):
act as natural therapy for these zombie cells, and some
studies have been published, and for many of you listening tonight,
this may not be exactly new to you, but now
you're thinking in the terms of I got to get
these zombie cells out of my body. So one particular
(26:09):
research study showed that recommending and maintaining overall good health
as we get older, what do you need thirty minutes
of moderate to vigorous exercise most days of the week,
and that is going to protect this regenerative potential that
(26:33):
we have. All right, and we could turn back the
clock or at least stop the clock along with unhealthy eating.
This is what we talk about all the time. Name
of my book, Eating Yourself Sick. I knew about it
back then, I know about it today. And the research
with these zombie cells is coming to fluition in a way.
(26:56):
All right, let's take a quick break. Final segment coming up.
I'm going to talk a little bit more about some
dietary intervention and some research with food and how to
get rid of these zombie cells. Also, little hint sauna
may actually be beneficial. All right, Doctor Joglotti. Final segment,
don't forget doctor Joglotti dot Com. Final segment of this
(27:16):
Week's your health First, Doctor Joe Galotti every Sunday between
seven and eight pm. Don't forget send me a message
by going to my website, doctor Jogalotti dot com. There's
a tab there that you could send me an email.
And I truly do look at all the emails that
come through to me and my team and we will
(27:38):
try to answer it and let you know if there's
certain topics you want to hear about, certain clarifications, if
there's any way that we can help you out. Throughout
the country, we field all kinds of questions about individuals
that are looking for second opinion and they need a
(27:58):
specialist in their area. Don't hesitate to drop me a line.
We'll be happy to help you out, but you have
to go to doctor Joegalotti dot com d R J
O E G A L A t I dot com.
All right, so final segment here. We were talking about
zombie cells in the last episode and this technology, I
(28:23):
would say you're going to be hearing a lot more
about it. A lot of people are talking about anti aging.
They are talking about life span so that you can
live a long life. Set whatever you like to do,
if you like to fish, if you like to draw,
you like to travel, you like to hike, you like
(28:45):
to do wouldwork, whatever you like to do, you want
to be able to do that as long as you
can being healthy. And let's let's face it, if you
develop some sort of disability, you develop heart failure, you
develop chronic pain from low back injuries, it's going to
(29:08):
significantly impact how you're going to carry on, the quality
of life you're going to have and the happiness that
you have. So we've heard of individuals they work their
whole life, they really do a great job, and then
they retire and they die or they get sick. The
(29:29):
idea of lifespan, the idea of understanding what creates these
zombie cells is important so that you can be aware
and do what you can to reverse the aging process
and get rid of these zombie cells. So we were
talking about exercise the additional ideas on how you can
(29:54):
get rid of these zombie cells. So again as a reminder,
if you're just tuning in, so when cells are damaged,
they don't function anymore. And what happens is there is
we talked about the sinesse it cells. These are sort
of like the senile cells, but there is something called otophagy,
(30:18):
where you're basically eating your own cells. This is basically
our way of housekeeping. You get rid of the old
cells in the body. But when the damage is beyond
repair and that is activated, this is when chronic disease
(30:42):
takes place. Now, zombie cells, they refuse to die. They're
on their own, and they wind up damaging cells nearby,
turning them into zombie cells too. So it's sort of
like you have one zombie cell, then you have two,
then you have four, then you have eight, and you
have sixteen, and this is going to create havoc immuneologic
(31:06):
inflammatory havoc. So the immune system can handle clearing zombie
cells here in there. We're all going to have them.
But once they start to accumulate, the damage and inflammation
becomes even greater and greater, greater disability, and inflammation and
disability feeds more inflammation and disability. So these zombie cells
(31:29):
accumulate in your joints, your arteries, your liver, your brain,
and are responsible for ostio orthritis, cardiovascular disease, cataracts, fatty liver,
neurocognitive Alzheimer's memory problems. So how do you kill them?
One way, now, I would say, this is still not
(31:53):
so much at its infantile stage, but a lot of
people are working on This is called hormesis. And as
the old saying goes, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
That is hormesis. So when your body is exposed to
a mild stressor in response to that stress, you come
(32:16):
out stronger and more resilient. So's that's where the sauna. Okay,
so work has been done on sauna. Typically let me
get my reference here. I think it is one hundred
and seventy five degrees okay, for twenty minutes. And this
(32:41):
promotes healthy aging by turning on the genes that repair
damage and lower inflammation. Okay, So that is one thing.
The liver makes these heat shot proteins that repair and
remove dysfunctional proteins and prevent them from clumping together. So
increases antioxidant production, repairs damage DNA, and kills zombie cells.
(33:07):
The same goes for cold plunge. Now again cold plunge,
a lot of people are getting into it. There seems
to be pretty good science with coal plunge. And again
you're stressing the body either with cold or with heat,
and it stimulates the body to not only clear these
zombie cells, but sort of improve the repair process. There
(33:31):
has also been discussion about resveratrol. So these are the
there's the compounds that are in grapes. There is some
in wine, though the amount that is in wine red
wine is not all that great. And there are a
number of resveratrol supplements, but again this is an area
(33:52):
that still needs to be watched carefully. Corcumin Okay, that's
the active ingredient in again powerful anti inflammatory effects. It
affects the gut microbiome, and again this may be very
important in sort of ridding your body of these of
(34:15):
these zombie cells. Fasting, now we've had experts on talking
about fasting. Again, this is another hormetic stress where when
you are fasting, your body is going through a little
bit of a stressful time, but it actually will make
your body stronger and make your immune system and your
(34:41):
ability to clear these these zombie cells better. So again,
lots of different strategies. There's intimittent fasting, there is time
restricted eating other times, something called the five two plans.
So you have this fasting regimen that includes eating a
standard diet for five day consecutively followed by restricted calories
(35:03):
somewhere between five to six hundred calories for two days
a week, so eat five days, don't want to overeat,
but then the other two days you go down to
about five to six hundred calories. Physical movement, physical activity
is also excellent moving through the day, and sauna. We
(35:24):
talked about cold plunch, we talked about cold showers, and
I would think that getting into a balanced diye. There's
a lot of work that showing that onions and garlic
are very good in reducing these senile cells, the zombie cells,
(35:46):
and cutting down in inflammation. So when you talk about
zombie cells and these bad cells that create a worse environment,
the remedy is things that we've spoken about, eating properly,
