Speaker 1 (00:01):
Initial Life Sequenzy coming to you live from Houston, Texas,
home to the world's largest medical center. Bunch Phase everything looking.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Really of three.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
This is Your Health First, the most beneficial health program
on radio with doctor Joe Bellotti. During the next hour,
you'll learn about health, wellness and the provention of disease.
Now here's your host, doctor Joe Bellotti.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Well, that's another Sunday night in America, and as usual,
between the hours of seven eight pm Central time, you
should be listening to and you are listening to Your
Health First. I'm your host, doctor Joe Glotti, and our

(01:14):
single handed mission is to make you a better consumer
of healthcare.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
It is.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
That simple. Why tune into this radio program. Well, we
want to give you actionable information, make you better consumers,
raise your health IQ, and really jumpstart your involvement in
your own health and wellness. Because we are plagued, and

(01:50):
I do mean plagued. It's really at an epidemic level,
the amount of chronic disease that we see related to
decisions we make every single day, multiple times. What am
I going to eat? What time am I going to bed?
What time do I wake up? Am I going to exercise?

(02:12):
Am I going to smoke. Am I going to drink.
AM I going to drink to excess? Am I going
to take supplements that I may not need. I'm on
a handful of prescription medicines that I'd like to think
you need. But are there strategies and options for you
to get off fifty percent of them in the next

(02:36):
six months? But that requires a dialogue with your doctor
and you have to really advocate for yourself. So that
is what we want to do here. We want you
all to think about your health and how you have
far greater control over it than you think. Our website

(02:57):
is doctor Joe Galotti d R J O E G
A L A t I. And that is where you
could sign up for a newsletter which comes out every weekend.
There's a subscribe tab you could send me a message,
contact us, take a look at my book Eating Yourself Sick.

(03:17):
All of our social media podcast videos, Facebook, Instagram, it
is all there on doctor Joeglotti dot com. There also
is a a a sort of a health questionnaire that
you can take when you go to the website really

(03:39):
sort of get a check in as to how you're
doing with regard to your own health and wellness, your nutrition,
stress and and sort of get a bit of a
compass reading on where you're at. But it's all on
doctor Joegalotti dot com. November is Diabetes Awareness Month. We'll

(03:59):
be talking a little bit about that a little later
in the program. A program note for everybody on Tuesday,
which is election day, which i'll talk about in a second.
Your Health First is going to be broadcasting on Serious
XM channel one twenty nine at twelve noon Central time,

(04:24):
one o'clock on the East, ten o'clock on the west.
Channel one twenty nine is the Catholic channel, And as
many of you know, about once a month or so
I do a sort of a very similar type program
on Sirius XM on channel one twenty nine. So if

(04:46):
you have Serious XM in your car or on your
phone one pm Houston time or Central Standard time twelve
o'clock East, you can catch the program and we're going
to be discussing cardiovascular disease in women. It is a
bit of a different beast. Women have different symptoms, they

(05:09):
have different risk factors. They present differently, not with your
typical crushing chest pain radiating down the left arm up
to your neck, which we've talked about a lot on
the program here. They tend to have very much more
subtle complaints, and because the symptoms are so subtle, they're

(05:34):
not quite that apparent, both the patient and people around them,
family members, spouse, children, grandchildren, they tend to fall into
this sense of false security. And so what happens is
your mom or your grandmother or your wife is moping

(05:55):
around the house saying she has heartburn and indigestion. Well
it was it was that really spicy Italian sauce we
had last night, and somebody at home will say, yeah,
I got it. I had a little reflux and indigestion
last night too, and that's that's probably what it is.

(06:16):
Or maybe a little bit of fullness and bloating, or
maybe just feeling a little fatigued. Well, we were out
late last night and I didn't get that much sleep,
and it was daylight savings or back to standard time,
some excuse, which is not a bad excuse, But in
the context of am I having a heart attack? Am

(06:37):
I having some schemia to my heart muscle not enough
blood going to it, you could be delaying the entire
process by hours to days, and the name of the
game with regard to heart disease is you want to
activate the nine to eleven nine to one one emerging

(07:00):
See care immediately. First sign you've got something going on. Bingo,
you want to call nine to one to one get seen.
And so that is what we're talking about on Tuesday,
Women and Heart Disease Serious XM Channel one twenty nine.
Be there, be part of the your Health First team.

(07:21):
All right, So Tuesday is election day. And I have
always been a bit of a political wonk. When I
was a kid growing up in New York, I had
an uncle that ran one of the local Long Island
newspapers and he did a lot of political campaigning. And

(07:45):
as a kid, I must have been five six years old,
we would get in station wagons with bullhorns and it
was more fun than anything else. We would drive around
neighborhoods up and down blocks with a bullhorn and we
would take turns speaking telling them to vote for one

(08:12):
candidate or another. And so I've always been involved in politics,
and I believe we all need to be involved in politics.
We can't be there and just be idle watchers on
the sidelines. I mean in the sense if you don't vote,
and you don't participate in the process, you almost have
no right to complain because the people that got into

(08:34):
power that are either making your life really good or
making it really lousy, they were put there for the
most part. And so I think you have to look
at the election on Tuesday, especially for President Kamala Harris
or Donald Trump. And I always look at it from

(08:56):
a health and wellness standpoint. Which candidate's better for the doctors,
what candidate may be better for the patients, Who's going
to be better for population health? And I would think
that the Republican approach and Donald Trump with all of

(09:16):
his bluster, with all of his bluster, there's always concern
about the health of our children, the health of our women.
And when you look at what's happening at the border,
the people that are flowing in this sex traffick team,

(09:39):
that is not good for women. So on one hand,
the Democratic Party may say we are pro women keeping
their bodies safe, etcetera, etcetera, But at the same time
they have a blind eye to the catastrophe that's happening
at the southern border, be it Texas or California, Arizona.
And certainly that is not showing any kind of concern

(10:04):
for women or children, the kids that are being up
here and being trafficked. And many of you know, whether
you're listening in Houston or outside of Euston or somewhere
on the other side of the world, Houston has a
huge sex trafficking problem. And it's happening right on to

(10:24):
round nose here. And I wonder, why are they allowing
this to happen. Why has the Biden administration been open
and just letting everybody flow in. I just do not
understand it. I think we're going to be talking about

(10:45):
this for years to come. Hopefully we could stem it
and put it into it. But anyway, regardless, go vote
on Tuesday. It is very, very important that everybody gets
there their voice heard, and realize that at the end
of the day, your influence does count. All Right, We're

(11:13):
gonna take a quick break, coming back, probably chat a
little bit about Diabetus Awareness Month. What you need to know.
Stay tuned. We'll write back for all you music people
out there. Anybody know who this is? This was from
I think about nineteen.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Eighty any ideas, all right, this might be the kicker

(11:54):
right here.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
It is Herb Albert not with the Tijuana brass, just
playing all Herbalbert. It's a great song. Name of a
song is Rise and anyway, little musical fun here. I'm

(12:24):
doctor Joe Galotti. Every Sunday between seven and apm. Your
Health First. Doctor Joegalotti dot com is our website. Doctor
Joeglotti dot com is our website. Do sign up for
our newsletter Every Sunday goes out across the country the
thousands of people, and it keeps you up to date
on things in the news. We talk about food, diet, exercise,

(12:49):
screening strategies for you, all in an effort to just
give you a little glimpse of what the heck is
going on in the world of health and wellness, which
by the way, is very very broad space to try
to cover. But it's all on doctor Joegloti dot com.
And don't don't forget Tuesday, Election Day, one o'clock Central Time,

(13:13):
try to tune into Serious XM channel one twenty nine.
There'll be an edition of Your Health First on the
Catholic channel of all places, talking about heart disease in women,
So make sure you tune in for that. If you
don't catch the live broadcast on the serious XM app

(13:33):
you can get the replay. It's usually posted there for
for a few weeks afterwards, and I will probably repost
it as a podcast as well, so somehow you'll get it.
But Serious XM channel one nine on Tuesday, one pm
Central Time, twelve noon East. All Right, So the month

(13:55):
of November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and the the key
thing for all of you to know is that diabetes
is a devastating disease in that it takes no prisoners.
And I say that all the time because if you
are not very meticulous in managing your diabetes, it will

(14:20):
attack essentially every organ in the body, starting with your
nervous system, your nerves, your eyes, your heart, your brain,
your kidneys, your liver, your penis. For a rectile dysfunction,

(14:41):
put you at risk for cancer, put you at risk
for stroke, put you at risk for disability and premature death.
And so if any of those things that I just said,
pick your disease, pick your organ of choice, and you
not sit there tonight and say, holy crap, I don't

(15:04):
want to develop sexual dysfunction. I don't want to end
up on dialysis. I don't want to go blind, and
I don't want my toes cut off, I better take
my diabetes seriously in a serious way. And so what
I see many, many, many times is that the patient, you,

(15:26):
the consumer, doesn't quite have a full understanding of what
is in play here, and either you minimize it, you
go into a state of denial it's not that bad,
and you tend to not follow the rules of diet
and exercise, eating the right meals, etc. The other problem is,

(15:51):
and I have to say, is with the healthcare system,
and what I write about in a number of chapters
in my book Eating Yourself Sick, is where patients will
come to me for a liver problem. That's what I do.
I take care of people with liver disease cirrhosis. A
lot of it is related not to alcohol, though alcohol

(16:13):
gives us enough work. It's related to fatty liver and
people have trouble with their metabolism. They have high cholesterol,
they have high blood pressure, and they have blood sugar issues.
But anyway, they will come to me. We look at
their records and there is blood work that clearly clearly

(16:33):
states this person has a problem with their blood sugar.
They're either overtly diabetic or they are on the verge
of being diabetic, they're pre diabetic, or they something we
call insulin resistance. And when you ask them, hey, what
did your doctor tell you? What did your nurse practitioner?
What did your physician assistant tell you? And they will say, well,

(16:56):
I just have a touch, I just have a touch
of diabetes. It's just a touch off. And as I
have been saying for years decades, anybody tell you that
you have a touch of anything, question them on that,
and at the same time, think that you may need

(17:17):
to get a second opinion by someone that is going
to seriously investigate these problems, because what happens is when
you keep telling people you've got a touch of this,
a touch of that, Well it doesn't sound that bad.
It's just a touch of something. No, you really are
on a collision course with something bad happening. And so

(17:40):
there has to be that sense of urgency. And diabetes
is a perfect example. And so the main takeaway point
here how we're going to raise your health IQ tonight.
Number one, realize that that if you have been told
you have a touch of diebt this, you have pre

(18:00):
diabetes or you have type two diabetas you're actually diabetic.
This is a disease that can attack head to toe,
and it does so in a very sinister way. You
may not have pain, you might not have any problems
at first, but gradually you're going to lose kidney function

(18:23):
or your risk of having a heart attacker stroke will slowly, slowly,
slowly creep up until one day you wake up and
you can't move your left side, and then you lose
your job, you lose your money, You spend the rest
of your life in rehab or in a nursing home,
which is not a pretty situation. And people say if
I only knew, Well, I'm telling you right now you

(18:45):
need to take action. So be aggressive and work this up.
Talk with your team, your healthcare team, on what do
you need to do to get this diabetes and blood
sugar issue under control. It's going to be diet to
be losing weight. It's going to be exercising, it's going
to be better selection of foods and knowing, knowing how

(19:09):
to navigate this hole maze. All right, we're gonna take
a break now, news, weather, traffic coming up. I'm doctor Joglotti.
Don't forget doctor Joglotti dot com. Say tune over right
back Welcome back everybody to your health First. I'm doctor
Joe Goalotti. Always always a pleasure being here on Sunday

(19:31):
evenings sharing a little bit of the weekend with all
of you. The weather was iffy, I would say, rain, overcast,
not too hot, a little muggy outside, but probably not
enough to not allow us to go outside and have

(19:56):
a little fun and exercise and take care of ourselves,
spend time with our family and friends. So always get
an opportunity to go outside. That's that's the name of
the game. Very good for your health and wellness. No
matter how you slice and dice it. You're getting outside
fresh air, you're exercising, getting sunlight, Vitamin D. It's good

(20:18):
for your mood. Get outside. Our website, as I have
been saying doctor Joegalotti dot com, Doctor Joegalotti dot com.
Plenty of information there, old broadcast that you could see,
our podcast videos, sign it for our newsletter, check out
my book Eating Yourself Sick. It's all there on doctor

(20:40):
Joegalotti dot com. Don't forget Tuesday. Two things, Election Day.
Go vote. Your influence counts. It is so important that
we get out and vote. The state of our country
is in flux. And we have to get out and
vote number two serious XAM check on A one twenty
nine at one pm Central time. I'll be on the

(21:05):
Catholic Channel series XM Channel one twenty nine giving somewhat
of a modified Your Health First broadcast talking about women
and heart disease. Make sure you are there. So if
you love us on Sunday at seven or anywhere that
you're listening to this through the iHeartRadio app, you could

(21:28):
also catch us on Tuesday during your lunch break. How
about that? How exciting is that? All right? So you
know I was you know, I talk a lot about
our newsletter and you could sign up on the website.
I am posting a copy of the newsletter on our
Facebook page, which is at doctor Joe Galotti. But you

(21:54):
may be saying, Okay, what did we miss this week?
So there was an article that was sent to me
by a colleague of mine who, hopefully and the next
week or two will be on the radio with me
and we'll talk about this in more detail. But the
one thing from a nutritional standpoint, there is sort of

(22:17):
a craziness that we are absolutely obsessed with getting protein
protein protein, protein, protein, protein bars, protein shakes, protein, cereal
milk fortified with more protein. We don't really need to
over do it that way, because what's happening is we're

(22:39):
taking in all of this protein at the expense of
good healthy fat and good healthy carbohydrates. The body was
meant to get protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Neither one of
those three are the enemy. Either one of those three

(23:01):
should be given more preferential treatment in a sense, all right,
because they're all kinds of crazy fad diets out there.
High fat, low carb high protein, high fat. It's enough

(23:23):
to make you crazy. And so the research in this
particular article talked about diets that were higher in protein,
excessive protein, and how that really did nothing or may
have made fatty liver worse. It does nothing with trying

(23:45):
to mobilize the fat out of your liver or out
of your body, out of your metabolism. So if you
think that protein is the cure al at the expense
of and carbohydrates, you are incorrect. You need to follow

(24:06):
a very simple as I love to tell my patience
and anytime that I could sort of utter these words,
plant based, whole food diet, Mediterranean diet, okay, Mediterranean diet,
lots of fruit, lots of vegetables, good carbs, good fats, nuts,

(24:26):
nuts have fat, some nuts have carbs, some have protein,
and nothing wrong with eating some well sourced seafood. And
you've got it. You got the good fats in the
form of olive oil, olive nuts, avocado. None of these

(24:52):
foods are the enemy. None of these foods are the enemy.
So that was one article that we we share. The
other was, you know, really, I think it's pretty fast.
This article was in the New England Journal of Medicine. Okay,
and so the the let me get back here, I'm

(25:16):
looking at it. So o zepic, semeglotide or any of
these GLP one drugs. There is no doubt that you
will lose weight, control your blood sugar. There are studies
showing that it cuts down on dementia, heart disease, heart failure,

(25:36):
lower your cholesterol. We are doing studies looking at fatty
liver addiction. A couple of weeks ago, we were talking
about addiction and people that were on g l P
one agonists that the risk of alcohol addiction, intoxication, drug

(25:58):
overdose from things like fentanyl were reduced if you were
on a GLP one agonist. So these really are turning
into the almost a wonder drug. Well, now, what they're
finding is that these medicines with weight loss are helping
people that have knee pain osteoarthritis in the knee, and

(26:22):
they're showing that the amount of pain was significantly reduced
in patient that were on the ozepic like products over
sixty eight weeks, they had significantly greater reduction in body
weight compared to placebo as well as knee pain. Now,

(26:45):
what I talk about in the newsletter is you look
at this and you say, well, hey, great, these medicines
allow you to lose weight and your knee pain gets better. Well, okay,
let's stop there for a second. I would say, yes,
that is true. But another casualty of the obesity epidemic.

(27:12):
And again, how did we get to the obesity epidemic
eating processed foods, Going off the plant based whole food diet,
you're consuming processed meals twenty four hours a day in excess.
We're not exercising, we're not walking, we're not getting enough sleep,
we're stressed out, not doing enough weight training, weight resistance training.

(27:39):
But the pain, the people that are walking around with
bad hips, bad knees, bad ankles, bad shoulders, bad backs,
and the associated disability. I talk to people all the time, Hey,
why aren't you walking? Oh doc, my knees are killing me. Yeah,

(28:02):
your knees are killing you because you're obese and eating terribly.
And is it the chicken of the egg? Do you
have bad knees? Couldn't exercise and you gain weight, or
you gain weight and you blew your knees out or
your hips or your ankles or your back. I mean
you have to take inventory and look at yourselves. How

(28:23):
many of you are out there just hobbling along with
bad knees. Yes, the answer is physical therapy. The answer
is maybe some sort of nonsteroidal. The answer may be
a steroid injection. But when was anybody saying, look at yourself,
you need to drop forty pounds, tell me what you're eating,

(28:46):
tell me how you're exercising. Okay, so we're missing the
boat there. And yes, it is nice to see that
these medicines will allow you to lose weight, your bone
and joint issues get better. But the key thing is
how do we prevent this five to ten, fifteen years earlier?
So if you're thirty five, forty years no, old now

(29:09):
and you're overweight. You could almost count on having bad
knees and hips which will add to disability. All right,
so let us take our final break. Little eagles here,

(29:29):
don't forget to go to doctor Joegalotti dot com sign
up for the newsletter. I just told you about the newsletter.
You could get a copy of it on Facebook and
sign up that way at doctor Jogalotti dot com. It's
all on our website, doctor Jogalotti dot com. All right,
final segment coming up. Hopef you having a great evening.
I do appreciate your spending a little time with us tonight,

(29:51):
and we'll be right back the final segment of this
week's your hell. First, don't forget doctor Joe Galotti dot
com is our website everything just about everything you need
to know about me, The program, our practice is all

(30:12):
on doctor Joeglotti dot com. And for those that are
battling any sort of liver or digestive ailment, you can
reach out to me and be seen at our practice
which is liver Specialist stuff Texas Texasliver dot com. But

(30:32):
main thing, just go to the main website and go there.
Final word Tuesday, Election Day. Make sure you get out
and vote. Vote once. That is the rule. And then
number two at one pm Houston time, Central time, sirius
XM channel one nine. I'll be on the air there

(30:53):
for an hour twelve noon East ten o'clock on the
West Coast modified version of Your Health first talking about
cardiovascular disease and women. So make sure you tune in there.
So lots of stuff going on to share with all
of you. All right, a few last things to chat

(31:15):
about here. So for those that know me or know
of me, food, food is medicine, and my sense is
the pathway that we have gotten into trouble with obesity

(31:36):
and the skyrocketing amount of heart disease we see, and
disability and kidney disease, and of course liver disease is
going off to rails because of obesity and fatty liver
and high cholesterol. It's because of what we ate through

(31:57):
our life. And depending on when you were born, meaning
the younger or older you are, you have been exposed
to more processed foods. And I truly, truly feel sad
and I am very very concerned about our children, our
young children, young adults that have been raised on fast food,

(32:22):
drive through door dash not knowing how to cook, how
to prepare a meal, no ingredients, no different flavors, how
to mix it all up together in the kitchen. That
is as foreign as speaking Swahili to so many people.

(32:43):
They just are clueless. They are out in left field,
and I get the sense that there's no way to
reel these people in. And as the cohort of people
that are in their early twenties and thirties move move
to their thirties and forties, forties and fifties, mark my word,

(33:06):
they're going to be absolutely plagued, saddled with progressive chronic
disease and disability, and their American dream is going to
go up in flames, spending time at their doctor's office,
the er Walgreens, popping pills to stay healthy. But anyway,

(33:31):
what do I have to say to this? So in
my family, my daughter got married a couple of years ago,
and her husband's parents we are very close with, and
in particular her father in law Dan, Let's just call
him Dan for now. Dan and I have an ongoing

(33:54):
relationship with food in that Dan loves to cook and
he is literally game to try anything, and we support
each other in our food journey, our cooking journey, trying
different things out together, trading secrets, Try this, try that.

(34:18):
How do you prepare your food? What's that secret ingredient?
What do I need to do? So yesterday I was
at work on Saturday and he sends me a picture
of a tabletop of fresh pasta that he made, and
I don't know, it must have been about one hundred
and fifty ravioli made by hand. And I looked at

(34:42):
it and I said, look, we were going to be
together last night at a fundraiser and I said to him, look,
bring me a few of these to taste test, and
I just want to see what kind of a job
you did. And so my wife and I get there

(35:03):
last night at this house party, and standing out in
the rain is Dan with a little bag piece of
foil with three ravioli, a little container of tomato sauce,
a napkin and a fork. And I eat it right outside,
sort of in the rain, outside these people's house that

(35:25):
I've never been before. People are walking in and there
is Joe Glatti and Dan, you know, shoving ravioli in
my mouth to taste test it for him. And it
was delicious. But what I'm saying here his excitement, whether
it is making some sort of duck breast, some sort
of a stew, he makes pizza, he makes spaghetti, he

(35:49):
makes ravioli. He has this crazy turkey that he makes
around Thanksgiving time, puts it in some sort of an
infrared fryer. But anyway, his excitement is like a kid,
and it's contagious. I feel like I'm a kid, and
my attitude with food is contagious. To have everybody around

(36:11):
the table testing out food. My goal is, why can
we not make this more contagious to other people? Because
if you can get excited two grown men huddling in
the rain taste testing a ravioli, which most people would

(36:32):
say is pretty sick, but it just goes to the
point how much we appreciate each other, the efforts for
getting good ingredients, the time and the tenderness to make
these things. Why aren't more people picking up on this?
It is so much fun. It creates such delight for

(36:54):
people that eat food. Break bread at the table. And
one of the tenets of the things that's very close
to me family, faith and food. We have our family,
we have our faith, and we have our food. If
you could link all of that together, we would be healthier.
I think our families would be healthier, our communities would

(37:15):
be healthier, and our country would be healthier. And so
just a little personal story here about Joe and Dan
and their food odyssey that they go on. So again
a little bit of a story food for thought. Think

(37:36):
about yourselves getting together with friends, co workers, relatives and
cooking a meal and having some excitement over it, making
cooking fun again. That's really That's really all I could
ask of all of you. And we're here as a
resource to inspire all of you. So that is it

(37:59):
for the night, Wrap it up for another night of
your Health First. Hope you have had a great weekend.
Go vote on Tuesday, and do take a few minutes
to think about your own health. What are you going
to cook and eat? What's your exercise schedule? What are
the obstacles to you getting a good night's sleep or

(38:21):
make a fresh mail at home? All right, take care?
Doctor Joglotti dot com is our website and you know what.
We'll see you next Sunday evening.
