(00:00):
I think that the best of foodthat they've cooked so far has been some

(00:03):
really really great chicken thighs one ohsix one the Twister. This is my
Tulsa with Carly Cantrell, Buster McCurtainand I'm with the Rotary Club of Bixby
and i am the festival coordinator.I am the co coordinator and my name
is Richard Oltman and I am withthe Rotary Club of Bixby. Welcome,
and you are the people that knoweverything about the Bixby Barbecue and Blues Fest.

(00:25):
Correct. We've been doing this nowfor about twenty two years, so
we have a really home this festivaldown to a fine art. And I
am sure that there are some questionswe can answer, but very very few,
because we know just about everything thereis about barbecue and about putting on
a really great community event festival.Well, I love it. Bixby is

(00:48):
just you know, growing leaps andbounds. Every time you go over there,
you've got something going on for thecommunity. We love it that the
Rotary Club does this. It's ahuge fundraiser for you, correct, it
is. It was started as afundraiser and it is turned into this huge
community event and It's just a wonderfulthing to do. I love it.
Well, you had me at musicand barbecue, I'm all in. But

(01:08):
yeah. So it's got food, barbecue competition, kid zone, and live
entertainment plus the vendors. So thisis what I'm interested in. I think
that this is the number one thingthat people are like, oh, I
can do that. There's actually apeople's choice award where we the people get
to pick the winner of the bestbarbecue. Right, you bet you can
go. You can go buy ataster kit for about ten dollars and then

(01:30):
you can go sample barbecue for aboutmaybe two and a half hours for these
teams that come in and set upand they're basically kind of a backyard barbecue
people. They're not professional, butthey're in there to help us raise money,
and so they put on a guerrilla, really great barbecue feed. I
love that. So it's only tendollars for this taster kit. What are

(01:52):
those available? Because I know theygo fast, Richard. We start selling
the taster kits at eleven thirty onSaturday morning. How long do they usually
laugh? They're usually sold out byno later than twelve thirty, twelve forty
five. Wow, so you wantto get there early Saturday morning if you
want to help judge that barbecue.Yes, that line will start about ten
thirty. Oh I love that. All right, good, So that's Saturday

(02:13):
morning. That's a reason to bethere then. But yet actually kicks off
on Friday night with live music andwhat else is happening on Friday night?
We have a kid's queue on Fridaynight. So the Bixby Fire Department works
with us and they present a kidsBarbecue contest. And that's a great event.
Oh that is so fun. What'sthe best thing that you've had at
a kids barbecue contest? I thinkthat the best of food that they've cooked

(02:36):
so far has been some really reallygreat chicken thighs and wonderful, wonderful tasting
thighs that the kids cook and theydo a great job. Oh that's awesome.
So these guys are actually doing likechicken and brisket, and I mean,
this isn't like just a hot dogcompetition. It's not a hot dog
competition. They basically do do chickenand then they do like they can cook

(02:58):
a meatball, they can cook ahamburger patty, or they can cook a
pork job man I love that.I gotta get me one of those kids.
They're great and the parents do nothelp them. They're not allowed to
help it as all the kids doingthe cooking. Oh wow, So that's
Friday night. So we're just gonnahave to stay this entire time. We
got to get there Friday night forthe kids competition. You got to get
their early Saturday morning in order toget a tasted kid. What else is

(03:20):
happening during the weekend. Well,on Friday night we have Wanda Watson who
kicks off the music and so that'sa that's a great entertainer. Then on
Saturday after nine o'clock, we havethe Kid Zone and they have musical entertainers
there. We have Simon Hagar comingin to entertain the kids. He's also

(03:42):
a gentleman that goes around them thegathering place and he does all kinds of
balloons, animals and things for kids. And then we have the retail vendors
and we have about thirty of themand they have all kinds of their vending
ideas. We have people that todo made in Oklahoma products. We have
people who do swords and knives andall kinds of beauty products. So it's

(04:09):
we have something for everybody, everythingfrom barbecue to swords to beauty products.
I love it. Bigsby is notmissing a bed, that's right. We
also have inflatables. Oh and wealso have a petting zoo. Wow.
So there's gonna be a lot ofthings for the kids to do. That's
very cool. And if you're notright there on Saturday morning for some reason,
you're not there before noon, youcan still get in on some great

(04:30):
food with the vendors, right.Oh, you bet. We have.
We have four barbecue vendors that areare coming in. We have a vendor
coming in Newman's Barbecue. We haveBoston Hog Barbecue out of Oakmulgi. We
have Mike Richardson to eat at Mike's, and then we have hot Mess Barbecue,
and then we have Dev's Pineapple Whip. We have Greg Goodman's Cattle Corn.

(04:56):
We have a fair food vendor CrownConcession. So we just to have
about just about everything that you wantfor barbecue, and then you can get
all types of fair food items.I love that, and that's just it
is. Even if you don't likebarbecue, you're gonna love the Bigsbee Barbecue
and Blues Festival because there's just somethingfor everyone. I love that a lot.
You can go and get yourself somepineapple whip and enjoy the free music

(05:17):
and along with the kids entertainment that'scoming to the kids zone. Friday night
you have Wanda the kicks off atsix thirty, and then Saturday night you
also have more live things on themain stage. Right, Yes, we
have three bands on Saturday. Attwo thirty we have the Hydramatics, at
four thirty we have Hambone Blues Band, and at seven o'clock we have the

(05:39):
Dustin Pittsley Band. All right,so we have a bunch of yeses.
Why we should go to the BisbeeBarbecue and Blues Festival. Yes, yes,
yes, but there are a fewknows, right, what are the
some of the things that people can'tbring to Bixbie Barbecue and Blues Festival.
No ice chest are allowed in thepark. Also, no alcohol is allowed
in the park, but you canbuy alcohol once you get into the park.

(06:00):
Also, any dogs that come intothe park must be on a short
leash. All right, Well thatall sounds really reasonable. So yeah,
and there's there a website where peoplecan go or a Facebook page where you
can go and find more information.Yes, we have a website and a
Facebook page and we have the generalquestions answered on all of those pages.
Excellent. Any security things you haveto have clear bags or like that,

(06:27):
We do have security on site BixbyPolice Department, Bixby Fire Department or there
securing the site zone. But wedon't have any restrictions on that. Now,
parking, I know we're we're goingtake us to take us to the
park. Take us to Washington IrvingPark from Tulsa. Where are we going
and where do we park? Well? Washington Irving Park is located on the

(06:47):
Arkansas River at one hundred and thirtyseventh and Memorial. When you come into
the park, you drive into thepark and then you pay your parking fee
ten dollars, and then you parkon the toll so sawd and Grass Farm
and then from there you walk directlyinto the park. I love that.
So there you go for ten bucks. You just walk on in, enjoy

(07:08):
all the free entertainment and everything. The only thing that's really going to cost
you is if you go to thekids zone. It's like fifteen dollars,
yes, for an all day pass. Of course, your barbecue. You
know you can go and just enjoythe bands and have a great day with
your family. Yes, you can. It's going to be a great day.
But remember the more you spend, the more you held out the Rotary
Club of Bixby. That is correct. This is our fundraiser for the year

(07:29):
and all of the money goes backinto our community, into our service projects.
I love that and tell me becauselast year I remember hearing about some
of the things that the Rotary Clubdid and I thought, man, I
had no idea that you were allinvolved in so much. Give me something
that you're really proud of that theRotary Club does throughout the year. We
provide dictionaries the third graders in theBixby area about twelve hundred third graders and

(07:53):
the greater Bixby area. I getfree dictionaries from us every year. We
provide for high school scholarships. Weget of four scholarships to high school students.
We also do a great thing inthe park at Christmas time. We
have shop with a cop and we'rethat families can come in and they can
walk to Walmart with an officer andthey can buy their family gifts. It's

(08:16):
a great a great event for us, and it's something that we look forward
to. We sponsor the Memorial Dayevent where we honor our veterans and we
also provide for needy families on asneeded basis. But it is a wonderful
experience to be able to work realhard to the barbecue festival and then see

(08:39):
the community and reap the benefits fromus. Absolutely. Who knew that barbecue
and blues could come with so muchlove throughout the year. I love that
a lot buy some barbecue and helpa kid. Oh yeah, because going
to see those kids with those dictionaries, that is the greatest thing ever.
You know. I just saw athird grade over in Bigsby and he was
like, this is laborious. Notreally, but he could have because he

(09:01):
has a free dictionary. All right. It's the twenty third annual Bixby Barbecue
and Blues. Give us the datesagain, guys, May nineteenth and twentieth,
Excellence Friday and Saturday. You gottabe there all day and it's sponsored
by Hillcrest South and Antibe's Bulls Social. Is there anything else you want to
add? Just make sure that youcome, you bring your appetite and enjoy
a great, great Friday and Saturdayin Bixby. It's gonna be fun.
