(00:00):
Oh yeah, this year we're addinga carnival. One O six one the
Twister. This is my Tulsa withCarla Cantrell. Well, you're going to
talk about the twenty fourth annual BixbyBarbecue and Blues Festival. Oh yeah,
oh yeah, that's a great time. Can you believe it's been twenty four
years? It has gone by soquickly, and there's been some wonderful years

(00:21):
involved in all that. It's beena great ride so far. You know
what's funny is I just went toa festival their first time ever doing it
this past weekend, and there weresome things that we're definitely not working and
I thought, every year you dothis festival, you figure out something that
makes it even better. Right,Oh yeah, this year we're adding a

(00:42):
carnival. Holy cow. All right, why did you decide to add the
carnival? That is a very bigundertaking. Well, I think that because
we've been doing this for such along time that we thought that the community
would like to see a change upin it and get something new. And
they've all so out of the newsection of park there, so it's a

(01:02):
great venue for a carnival, andwe just decided that let's try to get
this going. And it worked outjust super. We got the carnival this
year. Oh that is amazing.Okay, great, so let's just run
it down. I know everyone thinksof barbecue, Bixby barbecue. Obviously,
you're going to have the People's ChoiceAwards where people get to vote on that.
Right, that's still in place. That's right. We have the People's

(01:23):
Choice on Thursday. We have kidsQ so the kids are going to compete
in a barbecue contest. I lovethat they said that the kids do better
than some of the adults out there. They do a great job. That's
pretty awesome. We have the sponsoredby the Bixby Fire Department, and so
all the firemen get together and theyadvertise that they promote it, and they

(01:47):
also have a sponsor that they've gottentogether to help them with a fund it.
So it's going to be really anexciting community event for the kids up
to age fifteen. That is awesome. Man. You know, the firefighters
with all their smoking, they shouldbe smoking some barbecue out there and teaching
the kids how to do it safely. They should be able to do so,
and they should be able to controlany of the blazes. That come

(02:08):
out if it gets too hot.Well, so that's Thursday night, and
then yeah, the weekend commences witha bunch of barbecue plus other food vendors.
Right, yes, we have manyfood vendors. We have what what
do we have now? Five orsix? We have we have seven food
vendors. We have three of thereally really famous barbecue food trucks in town.

(02:32):
We've got the Newman's Firehouse the Barbecue, We've got Boston Hog, and
then we've got the bb Witch Companythat is out at Mother Road coming in.
So it should be a really goodtime get some great food there.
Absolutely, And then Saturday you actuallyget to tell them like we think this
is the best the People's Choice Awardswhere you can buy the taster kits,

(02:52):
right, yes, People's Choice Awardsstart Saturday. We start selling the taster
kits at eleven o'clock and we willrun the taste kits until they're gone,
and we will have everybody eat asmuch barbecue as possible and vote to their
favorite barbecue vendor. No, thosego really really fast. And are the
taster kits still only ten dollars? That's exactly right, and that's the best

(03:14):
deal in town. Because you cango other places and they're almost twice that
much. So everybody should show upand try to help these teams win their
awards. I love that ten dollars. You get to eat the ribs and
the pork and the brisket and allthe things. Then you get to cast
your vote and some really good boloneyooh a looney. Absolutely nothing like that
barbecue with. So there we gotthe kid's carnival covered. We got all

(03:38):
the barbecue stuff covered. But there'salso a kid zone there besides the carnival.
Correct, yes, the kids zoneis there. Everything is actually starting
up on Thursday. We added today. So we said go go big or
go home, and we added today. The carnival will be on Thursday.
We have the kid zone on Thursday. We'll probably have close to fifty retail

(04:00):
vendors on Thursday. We will havethe kids competition on Thursday. And we
have a band, a special bandthat is going to play in the new
park and that band is Midlife Crisis, the Fabulous Midlife Crisis, beginning at
around seven o'clock on Thursday evening inthe South Plaza Park, which is adjacent

(04:24):
to a Washington Irving Park right onthe Arkansas River. Oh man, yeah,
that's my kind of music. Ilove those guy Midlife Crisis Band on
Thursday night, and then you havemusic throughout the weekend. Right, we
have music on Friday night, andwe have music all day Saturday. Oh
that is so awesome. So Thursday, Friday, Saturday all jam packed with
kid Zone and carnival and music andbarbecue and holy cow, then it's a

(04:48):
weekend full of fun. We allcrossing our fingers that everyone gets out there
and does this all weekend long,Like if they buy a weekend pass,
can they do that? Do nothave weekend passes? We have now,
we don't have any weekend passes. The parking is separate for each day,
and then the carnival has some specialdeals going on for all you can ride

(05:13):
rides. That's awesome. And mostof it is free. Right, you
go out, you pay for parking, and you just get to walk through
and enjoy the music. Right, you pay for parking. Everything else is
free except for the carnival. Andif you want to buy a drink or
something like that, that is soamazing. I mean, how much fun
is that? No wonder, it'sjust kept on growing all these years.
It really has, and I thinkwe should probably mention on Saturday evening at

(05:38):
seven o'clock we have in the musicvenue there, we have Aaron Coleburn coming
in and she is new to ourarea, but she has a great following
and people should get to get toknow her and come on out, and
then that'll be a free concert thateveryone to get to enjoy different types of
music here that we bring into thearea. Yeah, and you know,

(06:00):
I'm just reading down this and you'renot kidding. On Saturday, your music
starts at one and doesn't end tillafter nine. That's right, all day
music. That's great. What acool deal. So how much is parking
and where can people park? Parkingis ten dollars and you will park right
across the street from us and abig lot. Excellent. Okay, so
you go pay your parking, youwalk in, you're enjoying the music.

(06:23):
The kids are running around begging youfor carnival tickets, which is fine because
they've got deals on that you canpick yourself up some good barbecue. I
mean, this sounds like a deal. And what are the dates again so
we can circle this on our calendar. It is May sixteenth, May seventeenth
and May eighteenth, Thursday, Fridayand Saturday, and it'll be the biggest
of three or four days that we'vehad in Bixby in quite a long time

(06:46):
because we've added new events and newthings and new attractions and everybody should really
really get their fill of barbecue, blues, music and a lot of fun
for the kids. I love that. And not only is it a great
deal, you're taking ten dollars, you're parking, You're maybe spending some ten
dollars on a taster kit, whichis a great deal, but all of
that money goes to a really goodcause. I mean, I had no

(07:09):
idea what all the Rotary Club does, but the more I learn, the
more I love the support. Ohyeah, we do a lot of great
things for the community, and thisis what funds it all. This is
our only fundraiser event of the year, and we do some great things.
The dictionaries. That has got tobe one of the best things ever is
the dictionary part. We've got everythingfrom dictionaries to the Christmas Parade to buying

(07:31):
gifts at Christmas time for kids willbe fun after school daycare through the YMCA
scholarships for high school students, leadershipclasses for high school students, and we
do the honoring the veterans on MemorialDays. So if there's some things that
need to be done in Bixby, the Rotary Club is there to do.

(07:54):
I absolutely love that. And youwere telling about the dictionaries. It's like
eight hundred dictionaries that you give tothird graders, right, twelve hundred.
Holy cow, that just keeps goingup because so many people are eating barbecue.
That's great, that's right. Andthese kids, we've been doing this
for almost twenty years and you cango find a kid from twenty years ago.
They still have that dictionary. That'samazing. And not only do you

(08:16):
help people in Bixby, but youactually do some international work as well,
right we do. We do wethrough through Rotary International and through some of
our club partners. We also helpfund some some girls' schools overseas, girls
school in Afghanistan area, which we'vebeen doing for a long time. We've
we've done eyeglass projects in Mexico. We do of course polio around the world.

(08:41):
So we do an awful lot ofgood through through the local club at
Bixby at Dinner partnering with Rotary Internationalaround the world. I love that.
And they couldn't do any of thatwithout you guys going out and eating some
barbecue, enjoying some music. Thisis their one fundraiser of the year,
rightie. Is what it is.It is and that's how that we get

(09:03):
the community involved, and that's howthat we help people. We think that
the Bixby Barbecue and Blows Festival isthe best deal around for people not only
to enjoy the food the music, but also to help people around the world
and in our community. So great, such a neat thing to do and
gets a lot of people in Bixby, which Bixby needs more love too.
The beautiful riverwalk down there and youguys are taking advantage of the new part

(09:26):
now with the carnivals. Oh,that park is going to be gorgeous,
excellent. We are so excited aboutit. It's the Barbecue and Blues Festival.
Happened in May sixteenth, seventeenth andeighteenth. Where can they go to
find out more? Guys, what'swebsite? We have a Facebook page and
then we have a website that isBixby Rotary Barbecue dot Com. Excellent.

(09:48):
Of course you can find everything atone o six one The Twister dot com
as well. Thank you guys foryour time. We so appreciate you.
