One O six one the Twister. This is my Tulsa with Carla Cantrell,
professional bull rider Ben John's thank youfor your time. I did not realize
that you live right here in Twistercountry. Yep, yep. I live
over and broken Aros. So I'vetried to get away a few times,
but I'm still here. Heeeves pullingyou back. Man, What do you
(00:21):
do on a regular basis when you'renot out there you're working with the bulls
and bands and barrels. Well,I've got I do a stunt person also,
and so I just got off afew different projects, like one was
with Ethan Hawk and another one wasa rodeo movie that was filmed that.
Both of those are films here intown. I do that, and I'm
also an it guy, so Iwork remotely from home for a company out
(00:45):
of Alabama doing it work. Dude, you are just a man of you'rely
a renaissance man, Ben. Ihave heard that before, but I didn't
think of it that way. Butyou know, I'm okay with that.
You are definitely a renaissance man.I mean just the title. I want
you to know. When they toldme they're like Ben John's is gonna be
calling you. He's the American Ninjawarrior athlete, professional bull rid black belt,
(01:07):
former US Gymnastics Federation team member, former professional mm A fighter. And
now we have another whole list ofthings that you do. Yep, yeah,
I don't like the grass to growunder my feet. You know that's
awesome, Well tell me, becausepeople have a real hard time. You
(01:29):
know, a rodeo is one thing, a concert is another thing. Then
you have these sizzle reels that justmake bulls, bands and barrels look like
it is just out of this world. Describe a show for me event,
Like, if you're gonna give awaytickets to this event, where are you
telling people they're going? Well, yeah, okay, So I've been rodeo
and bull riding, mainly bull writing. I don't do any of the sports
(01:51):
in the Western in the Western world, I'm just a bull rider. But
I've been doing it in other countriesthen all over the world world, and
literally the the most fun I've hadhas been going to these events. Because
not only are you, like yousaid, you are getting a concert,
and especially you know May eleven's herein town at the Bok Center. You're
(02:13):
gonna get you know, Pat Green, you're gonna get in Munsick in concert,
and those tickets alone would be youknow, pretty pricey generally, but
you're also gonna get three of whatwe think are the coolest and most exciting
sports in Western sports, which arebull riding, bear racing, and bullfighting.
(02:34):
So if you've never seen an Americanstyle bullfight, those are those are
insane. I mean, these guysare like outstanding athletes and their job is
to keep the bull engaged so withinyou know, an arms reach. So
this guy, these bullfighters are goingto be running around for one minute and
they get scored on how close theycan keep that bull to them and how
(02:59):
much control they can have over thebull instead of the bull just running them
over, and you know, thenthen getting up, they they're actually trying
to work for the bull and justmake him move where he wants them to
move and not get hooked. Andso that's fast paced, it's exciting.
And then you've got of course thebell racing. Bell racing is fast.
I mean, those girls they lovegoing fast and you know, cut gunning
(03:22):
around the corners and stuff there,it's going to be flying. And then
obviously the bull riding you know, you've got twenty bull riders in the first
round and we're all going to geton our bulls and then we'll come back
for what's called the short round,uh, and there'll be six of us
and whoever has the highest score youknow, on both of those bulls gets
the belt and we're given a givenaway this really awesome orange like WWE style
(03:46):
belt, and I haven't won oneyet, and I think Tulsa's, you
know, the place to do itfirst for me to win it. So
you know, you get all ofthose things for one ticket price, and
you know that from the second youwill walk in, there's gonna be some
kind of music playing. We're gonnahave a DJ or something, we'll have
a Actually I think this time we'regonna have Kenny Fielder as our first artist
(04:10):
and he's gonna go on stage atsix. So you know, you get
there at five thirty doors open, you're gonna hear music. You're gonna probably
not hear a bunch of old country, which I love old countries. But
this is a high energy, Imean, fast action packed event, so
most people don't sit down much. And you know, we always are encouraged
(04:32):
at every you know, event thatwe go to. Most of the time,
it's like, yeah, you wantto get up and you want to
cheer and things like that. Butwe don't even have to tell you that.
Just people do it because it's itis so exciting. You're gonna hear,
you know, Lil Wayne, You'regonna hear you know, who knows
what kind of music is gonna beit, but it is inferently, so
you know, I worry about thatfamily oriented and all that good stuff.
(04:54):
So bring the kids, bring thegrandma's all that, and everybody is just
gonna have a fantastic time. Bythe time you know it, you know,
three four hours is gonna be goneand you're just going to have the
greatest time in your life. Ilove that. And you know, I
don't think you could have done iton a weekend when more people weren't downtown
already, because it's May Fast weekendand it's Mother's Day weekend. So like
(05:15):
you said, it's an event forthe whole family, right, Oh,
absolutely, and you know we're gonnaYou can also get a VIP. You
can pay for a VIP experience andthat includes early entry, so you could
get in at like four point thirtyinstead of five point thirty, and then
we're gonna do I'll be part ofthe VIP tour, so we'll explain a
little bit about bull riding, We'llexplain a little about bullfighting, barrel racing
(05:39):
and that kind of thing, andeverybody just to ask questions. And then
you get a discount on merche, you get a drink ticket, you get
special seating in front of everybody elseon the dirt during the concert, with
you know, access to a bardown there, so you don't have to
go upstairs to get more drinks ifyou want drinks and stuff like that.
(06:00):
And so it's just like it's agreat, a great experience, uh,
you know, from from all anglesthat is, it sounds like so much
fun. I cannot wait for it. And Ben, are you going to
be part of Have you heard aboutthe pre party the night before at Arena
Pub right down there. I wasjust going to mention that we are going
to do that, and I amone of the main people you know,
that'll be there for that deal, and I'm I'm excited. You know,
(06:25):
Ted's a good friend of mine andthe owner there, and we're going to
have a good time on Friday, night. I don't know what else is
going to be there, but Ihear there might be a bull there,
but we don't know yet. Holycow. Well, I know I'm going
to be there. So if youand I are both there and we have
a bull, I mean it's goingto be a party. What I mean,
(06:46):
what could go wrong? So exciting? I mean, we start Friday
and we'll end on Sunday sometimes, man, I absolutely love that. And
Vin, just for kicks, Iasked this to everyone, and I'm always
really surprised by the answer. Whatis the scariest thing you've ever done?
Doesn't have to be anything on abullet or can be whatever. What's the
scariest thing you've ever done? Andwould you do it again? M Well,
(07:09):
you know it's funny because I doknow off the top of my head
what that would be. And Iwould say one year, about five years
ago, me and some trans wentto Switzerland to snowboard and there's a bridge,
a suspension bridge between Austria and Switzerland, and we're snowboarding, and I
have this stupid idea to climb outon the cable to suspend it underneath the
(07:31):
suspension bridge and hang over it andit's essentially like the Royal boarde. It's
about five hundred feet over a river. And so I was like, hey,
guys, I'm gonna take my picture. I'm gonna run down here and
I'm gonna climb out of the cableand I'm gonna hang You're gonna take a
picture of me. And so theywere like, you're stupid, but okay.
So I take my board off andI ease my way down there and
(07:56):
I shimmied out on this huge cableover you know, about a five hundred
foot drop over a river in Switzerlandand just hung out there for a little
bit to get some pictures and thenclimb back. And no, I would
never do that again. Oh youall the stuff that you have done and
you almost died like a thirteen yearold girl. Yeah, yeah, it
(08:18):
was. You know, after thefact, I was like, I'm really
glad I did that. But thenthe next thought after that, it's like,
yeah, probably not doing that again. You're like the guy in the
National Force that takes the picture withthe buffalo and then just gets killed.
Yeah. I got a really goodfriend who's a horse jockey, and we
were in there. We were downin Ridoso, New Mexico one time.
(08:39):
So I was there for bull riding, he was there for a horse race.
He did that. There was anelk out in the in the drive
or in the in the parking lot, and he did that same thing.
You ran over there with his camerain his phae and he's taken selfies with
this elk like four feet from him, and I'm like, nope, I'm
not doing that. So he didit. No, I'm glad you were
(09:01):
smarter than that. All right,Ben, We will see you Friday night,
five to seven at Arena Pub downtownon Denver for the official pre party
to Bulls, Bands and Barrels. That's right, sounds awesome, All right,
awesome. You can get your ticketsright now at bok center dot com.
Ben Johns, we will see youthere. Thank you so much for
your time. I really appreciate you. You bet sounds Good'll see all there.
