And here's your host, Jason Levine.
Speaker 9 (03:42):
Yeah, good morning everybody. Mister Steve Pollack here filling in
for Jason. Jason is down under in Australia visiting family.
And uh I just got some news that Santa Anita
has canceled racing today and that was going to be
(04:03):
the center of my focus today, So we are going
to be winging it a little bit here today. Oaklawn's
canceled due to bad weather, and now Santa Anita has canceled.
So we're gonna bring Bruno to Julia on here in
a couple of minutes, and we got a couple of
interesting topics to talk about, and he's going to give
you some horses leaf from golf Stream and then we're
(04:26):
gonna have jay on. Jay is going to also give
you a horse from golf Stream. He and I are
going to talk about the Eclipse Awards a little bit here,
just a couple of tidbits information wise. Gosh, with all
that's going on. Mario Gatirez reportedly lost his home in
the eating fire, so goodness, the stuff that's going on
(04:49):
in La I was really trying to just give you
a reprieve when you were going to listen to this
show today and and and just try to talk about racing.
But it's going to be difficult now with Santa Anita canceling.
Johannes Uh probably the best horse on the West Coast
right now, certainly the best grass horse. A minor injury
(05:12):
for this one. He will not be running in the
vegasus Sturf. Hopefully this horse can get some time and
maybe come back and defending the Eddie Reid and and
we can see this one in the Breeders Cup. Mile
was supposed to be a memorial today for Melvin Study,
who never got one and was certainly one of the
(05:33):
most well liked guys. That was supposed to be today
and tomorrow. With racing canceled today, I don't know what
will happen tomorrow. Maybe they're going to cancel for the
whole weekend at Melt. Study was a great guy. I
was able to meet him through Black Diamond Racing, who
he did some significant training for boy trained horses like
(05:56):
Brave Raj. Most of you will remember him for or
the Preakness winner snow Chief, and tell you what I'm
going to remember him for Breers' Cup Sprint winner. Very
Subtle was a Philly that didn't look like a Philly.
She was an absolute massive monster. And I frankly think
of those three and those are the three, all three
(06:17):
winning major races, with Brave Braj winning the Breeders' Cup
Philly Juvenile Race. I thought Very Subtle was the best
of the three. What a monstrous effort she put in
at Hollywood Park. I believe that was when she won.
At that time they didn't have the the Philly Mayor
(06:38):
Sprint and she had to run against the boys, and
she had six furlongs, had a good outside dry. I
think it was peeve Al who wrote her that day
and and she got the money.
Speaker 10 (06:49):
So so that's what's going on here today.
Speaker 9 (06:53):
I want to bring on my good friend Bruno to
Julio Bruno, it's been a ridiculously tough week. You've been
there living up there in La right now, Bruno, welcome
to the show. Good morning, and how are you doing.
Speaker 6 (07:11):
I'm doing. I'm doing well, Steve, thank you. I'm actually
down in ocean side. We're not too far from the
Saint Luis Ray where we had that horrific fire in
twenty eighteen. Hey, let me let me cover a little
something that you covered about the n Joanna's injury. He's
sidelined with bone bruising and people may not understand what
(07:35):
bone bruising is. And if if I give me the
opportunity to and give a little explanation on what they found,
love it, love.
Speaker 9 (07:42):
It and really want to know. We really want to
know about this horse. I would think you would agree
with me. If he's not the best horse on the
West Coast, he's certainly in the top two or three.
But tell us what's going on with you, honus.
Speaker 6 (07:56):
He is sidelined with bone bruising. Bone bruising is one
of the biggest reasons horses have catastrophic injuries in the afternoon.
Bone bruising is is not you have to really you
have to go through a variety of tests to find it.
(08:16):
What they are is microfractures in the bone from stress.
And they don't show up as heat, they don't show
up with lame.
Speaker 9 (08:26):
They're there.
Speaker 6 (08:27):
And what they these microfractures, if you don't let them heal,
what they'll do is they'll expand and become candular fractures.
They become a lot of different type of fracture that
can basically be catastrophic during a work or during a race.
(08:49):
As most of us that are old now no, especially
if you're an athlete, you get arthritis and you get
pains in your joints that could be a very well
a result of bone bruising. I played a lot of
soccer all my life, so my feet are constantly in
(09:09):
aching because of it. And that's called that's what the
bone bruising is. The way you find out about bone bruising.
You have to object to die into that horse's bones
and it shows syntography, it's called and it shows all
these micro fractures or else just a regular X ray
(09:30):
will not point that out. I've experienced it with a
number of my horses. People say, oh, we'll give them
ninety days. You know, sometimes bone bruising could take up
the six months to heal. So it's not something that's minors.
It is a I consider it a dehabilitating injury because
(09:55):
of the time that it takes to come back. I
had one horse Grade three winner that keeps, you know,
having that he had bone bruising, but that was the
result because he had a cracked pelvic bone that went
on chat and the only way you found out it
did synthography and they found the crack and the pelvic bone.
(10:17):
So sometimes the bone bruising is also related to another
injury as well. That's allowing that's making that horse put
more weight on a particular part of his body. So
that is what I've read about the diagnosis on Johannas,
And it's not a minor injury. It's something that's going
(10:38):
to take time.
Speaker 9 (10:40):
Uh man, that's terrible news. I really really was hoping
that that Southern California could get back in the you know,
in the Breeders' Cup turf Mile. It was fifteen twenty
years ago. Bruto, Southern California's best horse, would always contend
in that race, and we had a number of winners.
(11:01):
We had a number of trainers that were good at
at Drysdale, Cananny Frankel. These guys all brought horses to
the Breeders Cup Mile every year and it was really
good to see southern California get back in the mix.
And I'll tell you what if those of you who
watched the Breeders Cup Mile, Johannes got a little bit
of a wide trip and the horse that won that
(11:22):
race was amazing. And I'm not saying Johannes would have won,
but if he could have had a little better trip,
he could have contended for that win.
Speaker 10 (11:29):
He was second.
Speaker 9 (11:30):
I think he was beaten by a length and a half,
might have even been two. But you know how important
a good trip is on that del Mar turf course,
and I would say he had a slightly below average
trip and for him to run second, he fired his
a shot in there. And according to what you're saying, Bruno,
we might not see this guy again.
Speaker 6 (11:49):
Well, Steve, let me bring out a point. Let me,
excuse me, let me shed some good part of this.
When you have bone bruising, it's something that you can tackle.
You can go ahead, give him the time, get him
to heal. It's not like having a middle joint and
(12:13):
a knee that needed a surgery. It's not a soft
issue damage like tendon or ligaments that take forever to
heal and you don't know if they're going to come
back to the same It's an injury that just takes time.
It's not something that's going to end a career. Now.
It is ended a career for a number of horses.
(12:35):
Super Saver comes to mind. Comes to mind was one
of those. He was retired because of bone bruising. It
probably was so bad, and even he probably had some status.
There's some stud status.
Speaker 10 (12:46):
So it was able.
Speaker 6 (12:48):
You know, people can make the case of the retiring him.
So my whole thing is that it could have been worse.
It could have been a knee joint, it could have
been anything related to soft tissue that could have really
ended this source's career. It didn't, So let's look at
the positive side. Steve, let me say this before we
(13:10):
go further. My heart goes out. It's been a very
emotional week. I've had a lot of friends in the
Altadena specific palisades that have endured a tragedy into life.
They've maybe lost loved ones, definitely lost the property. But
(13:37):
talking to my friends and texting back and forth over
the last three four days, you hear the good stories
and the bad stories. And one stories I like to
share is a really good racing friend of mine lives
an Altadena with his wife and they have a beautiful
home on the side of the of a canyon. And
(13:57):
on Tuesday texted him to see if he was okay,
and his response was, no toothbrush, no meds, but we're safe.
The house question mark, question mark. I finally got a
hold of him last night and he told me that
the house was still standing. A lot of people aren't
(14:18):
that lucky, and my heart goes out to them for
what has happened, and it's still happening. I saw this overnight.
There was a fire tornado in one of the in
the Pacific Palisades fire, So it's really something that and
(14:39):
myself down here in ocean side. I mean, I've got
toats ready in case anything happens down here. I've got
totes ready with the dog foods, the dogs, crates, everything
ready to go in case we have to evacuate in
a minute. It's hard because right around the side, right
around the side of the canyon, so it's not only
(15:00):
it's it's it's also raises your your own anxiety level
where you're at, what are you going to do if
something happens instead of waiting til the last minute. So
it's my heart just goes out to everybody and maybe
we can, maybe we can come up with some little
(15:21):
lightheartedness about horse players that that can bring a little
smile to people's faces, because we haven't had a whole
lot to smile here in California.
Speaker 10 (15:35):
Now we haven't.
Speaker 9 (15:36):
We haven't, and you know, you and I wanted to
try to keep the show lighthearted. You know, we already
got the news that Santa Anita canceled, and we were
going to really focus in on this on the Santa
Anita racing today, so obviously that's out the door.
Speaker 10 (15:54):
Bruno.
Speaker 9 (15:56):
We were going to talk about some four star workouts
that Santa Anita and we go to our setting our
second topic here, and it's just something that I wanted
to know a little bit about because I know absolutely
nothing about these racing machines, these racing machines that San
Anita as when I've heard they've already purchased them, and
(16:19):
it's a way to try to bring in some money.
And I know nothing about these machines. If can you
tell someone who absolutely knows nothing about these machines where
you have seen them, what they are and is it
possible that these machines could help save racing? Tell us
what you know about these racing machines.
Speaker 6 (16:42):
Well, first of all, to save racing. That people need
to save racing, that's my opinion. Now, have I ever
played an instant racing machine? Now, I've never had. However,
I've seen what it's done to Kentucky and the Kentucky
Eat racing programs and the purses are unbelievable. There is
(17:07):
a racing is alive, and well there, I know, that's Kentucky.
It's the midst divorce country. You know, it's it's you
go in Kentucky and everybody's talking about racing. Everybody knows
something about racing. They got some family member involved in racing.
I also have a condo in Frankfurt right on the
border of Frekforn Lexington, which right now, that's another issue.
(17:31):
We got an ice age going back east. Oakland's canceled.
You've got you've had rain down at fairgrounds. Kentucky is
had to cancel at Turfway because of the snow, so
everything back there is around racing, well, California really is not.
(17:53):
There's so many other things to do in California then
say hey, let's go to the racetrack. And that's one
of the breggest problems they've always had. They're always competing
against so many different things. Like today they would have
been competing against the NFL playoffs in California with the
chargers and on Monday with the rams. So when you
(18:14):
have that, I don't know if the incidant racing machines
can be as fruitful for the racing community as they
are in Kentucky or in other places. You can see
what some of the casino money has done in New York.
If you ever driven through the Lake Erie area coming
down from Saratoga down into and trying to go through
(18:36):
Cleveland and down into Kentucky, which have done many times.
You go buy Presquyle downs and that has really been
built because of the casino money. I think it's something
that can help. But for me, a machine is not
going to take over and improve the racing unless the
(19:01):
people that are running the show are going to improve racing.
By some of the implementations of some of the new
rules and some of the things that can do to
to make racing much more viable for the customer to
come in and take that over the one hundred other
things you can do in California.
Speaker 9 (19:20):
No, I hear you, but but I just want to
know about these machines, Bruno.
Speaker 10 (19:24):
Are they are?
Speaker 4 (19:26):
It?
Speaker 9 (19:26):
Is it like a slot machine and it has a
where you're able to go up there and select some
sort of a wind better exact, a bet and and
they're showing Are they showing the same races over and
over again? I mean I haven't. I really know nothing
about these machines. Can you give us a little bit
of detail about the machines itself?
Speaker 6 (19:50):
Yeah, I can try to. Uh. The ones that that
I am familiar with a little bit are the historical
horse racing machines. It's an electronic gambling product, uh that
that allows players to bet on replays of horse races
or dog races that already been run using a terminal
(20:11):
that resembles a slot machine. Uh. One of the primary
providers of the historical racing machines are exactly a system
which is subsidiary or Churchill Downs or Paramax which is
the vision Astronic group, So PARAMAXA would be the one
that probably would be supplying. And I'm totally guessing here.
(20:31):
Please don't take my word as gospel. I'm I'm only
reciting what I what I understand. But if Stronic group
is going to go in, and probably paramaxis Is is
one of the ones they're going to use. You make
your wager on a race, You your positive money for
(20:54):
your wager, and a race is randomly selected from a
video library about you know, maybe sixty eighty thousand dollars
previous races, uh, such as locations, the date of the race,
and the name of the horse jockey is not shown.
The player can view the skill graph charts from the
Daily Racing Form or whatever past performances they have available,
(21:17):
and and and and basically make a decisions just like
it's really really like handicapping, but you're handicapping on a
on a on a historical race, and and you're handicapping, uh,
you know, and and making your wager on the on
the incidentt machine just like, you know, it's kind of
(21:39):
kind of neat. It's a neat idea, but you know, Steve,
it doesn't really really replace the real thing, you know.
And but it's definitely done very very well in Kentucky.
You can see that by the persons and the they
(22:00):
get there, and that's just something that maybe can help.
But I'm going to go back to my statement. People
make something work machine Stone, it's the people behind it.
Speaker 9 (22:13):
Well, Bruno, I can just give you, you know, I
can just give you one example of a guy that's
one of my very best friends, and I told you
this last night. You know, this gentleman has horses. He
has horses here in southern California. But the way that
there's the way that they're doing things now. They're only
wanting to run during Delmar. So he wants to run
(22:33):
middle of July and he'll run up until the you know,
he'll run through the fall meet at Delmar and then
they're wanting to head back east and they're going to
try to run at Oakland during the winter now because
the purses are so much better. We've got just far
too many people doing that and I'm just hoping that
(22:55):
this will be something that will get him to reconsider
instead of having to you know, watch his horses on TV,
which is what he's doing, because he's not really traveling.
I'm sure if he was in a state race or
something like that, that he might be willing to go
back to Oakland or somewhere where they're racing in Kentucky
or maybe in Florida. But right now there's too many
(23:18):
people doing that, and too many people are just interested
in the Delmar Meet where we seem to get a
bump in the number of horses that are running, and
all of a sudden, these horses are showing up, and
this guy is just saying to me, Hey, how can
I run for X when I could run for Y
somewhere else? And if we can boost those purses up,
maybe this is something that can help and we won't
(23:39):
have as many people that are doing what my friend
is doing.
Speaker 6 (23:42):
I agree with you, but you know what.
Speaker 9 (23:46):
This machines.
Speaker 6 (23:49):
You can't walk up. You know, there's something about going
through the race strip and you see two guys standing there,
You and I stand in there, and you're and I'm
looking at you, going Steve, I had the two with
the four, the three with the six, the two with
the six. I don't have the two with the three.
I'm an idiot, And when what what do you do?
(24:09):
You look at me and you go, what are you
liking the naxt?
Speaker 8 (24:13):
You know?
Speaker 6 (24:14):
How about when you walk into a racetrack and you
have a guy going day like the three and you
look at it and you think Day, Who's Day? If
I want if I called Sanata right now and ask
for Day, would they put me through an extension? Is
nobody has an office in Day? And who is Day?
Are they? Are they a single entity? Are they of multiplanity?
(24:40):
Anybody really Day? Or you know it's it's you don't know.
I mean I want to call Sanada and ask for
Day and see if somebody picks it up. It's like
saying who.
Speaker 9 (24:51):
Are they meeting today? That is hilarious. That is hilarious.
Speaker 6 (24:56):
Wait, you cannot replace the ability to go to the
racetrack and you have guys like Cinch running around tipping,
you know, having the tips on horses. Or my favorite
one is the guy that you know that I see
every time at the track and he's like, give me
something good, Bruno, you got something good? And the one
day you got something good? You walk by me though,
(25:18):
I like the three in the fourth and the guy
looks at you and goes, I heard the four, you know,
so I mean, or what about the guy that you
know you're gonna give him a tip and you're gonna
walk up to him and say, I like the three
with the two and the five right, and it comes
in exactly like you call it. You walk by that
guy two races later and going to score, and he
(25:40):
looked at you and he goes, no, I miss the trifecta.
I mean, there's a lot of things that even though
you can play from home, that you miss at the track.
I'll tell you it used to be on Roger Steinshield.
And this is kind of tells you a little bit
sometimes that jack asside people can be I free out
(26:00):
of four twenty dollars winners that weekend. I stands next
to me A week later, he says, Bruno, great weekend
last weekend. It really could on Roger. You had three
twenty dollars horses. I bet the fourth one, mofo. You know,
I mean, you can only get that at the track.
He was mad at me because he bet the fourth
(26:22):
horse and the fourth horse didn't win.
Speaker 9 (26:24):
You know, you you set him up, Bruno, You set
him up. You proved to him that you were good
with the first two. He wanted to really be sure
in the third one, and by the time he got
to the fourth one, Oh my goodness, Hey Bruno, do
me a favor here. Let's take a quick look at
your golf Stream race. We got about five minutes left
before the bottom of the hour breaking here. Can you
(26:46):
can you tell us what you have race wise at Gulfstream.
I am a little bit lost in here as to
what race you were going to do, if you were
going to if there was a horse or two that
you want to talk about down there.
Speaker 6 (26:58):
I'm going to talk about probably some of the later
races of the late Pick five. In the seventh race,
for example, we like the nine camp Ale uh, and
we like the uh the I'm sorry eight my voice
is not ready to go, the ninth Campale and the
eight gos Gert. Those are two, uh, two of the
(27:22):
horses that I'm going to single together to a double
single in the late pick five.
Speaker 10 (27:29):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (27:30):
The eight Ghost Gus of Brendan Walsh, who's been on fire. Uh,
he's get Tyler gaffleone and camp Pale. This is an
Ian Wilkes for with them. I've had this horse in
the past. I think he's I liked him a lot
first time out he ran second at a twenty to one.
He had really good works. He worked with a horse
(27:51):
on on January first, he worked with a horse named
American Retro, who's an American pharaoh. That's actually a pretty
good little horse, and he had himself really really well
and galloped out well in front. So if you're playing
the Lake pick five, I always try to find a
race that I can narrow down. The ticket structure is
all about making sure you narrow the right race down
(28:14):
and have the winner. That is the key. So if
I can have the winner, even though it's one of
the favorites, if I have the winner, it allows me
to spread in the other races, which is another topic
for another day. You know that, Steve, that you and
I can do point counterpoint the old Jane Curtain and
dan Ackroyd on on Saturday Night License. It is NFL
(28:36):
the fiftieth year anniversary. You know that way I can
look at you and go, Jane anyway, see your ignorant
flot You know that.
Speaker 10 (28:48):
That would exactly not live.
Speaker 6 (28:52):
A great line, And hopefully then maybe you and I
can do that in the future. But in race seven
made Special at a mile, am fail and the eight,
the nine and the eight Gosger. I'm gonna look at
key and those in the pick five and build around it, all.
Speaker 9 (29:09):
Right, the eight Goscar from the Brendan Walsh barn and
the nine camp Hale for Bruno in race seven out
of golf Stream, get those, use those two. Was there
another race at golf Stream that you wanted to talk about?
I believe, Uh, let's move, I'm going to talk about
the big race there, the tenth race.
Speaker 6 (29:26):
Yeah, let's go on to that one where we like
the two at eight to one. Uh and and kozaries
for Teresa Terry Pompey uh writing by Louis Siez eight
to one on the line. I don't pay attention to
the morning lines, but people like to hear what's in
the morning line. Well, there you are. It won't mean
that this horse is going to be eight to one.
(29:47):
Don't fool yourself, you know. And I'll use them in
exactness with the seventh Shack Diesel in the fourth secret chat. Again,
this is this is all about up prepping myself to
be able to put together a good pick five ticket
on our ticket that we have on the sheet. I
believe we picked we have four horses in the tenth
(30:10):
race for that race, so we're telling you we're kind
of it's got to open. But whe're going with a
price play because when you're playing these these horizontal wagers,
you may have a horse that goes off at two
to one in the third or fourth leg and he
was an eight for ten to one on the morning line,
and that causes value because people really gravitate towards the
(30:30):
morning line's favorite when they're playing these tickets after the
first race. So my point isn't here is that having
a horse like the two horse goes ares at eight
to one could be valuable whether it goes off at
four to one, twelve to one, or even two to
one because those changes in the morning line, because morning
line suck these days. Pardon my French, but you know,
(30:55):
are you laughing over there? Are you crying?
Speaker 9 (30:58):
No, I'm I'm agreeing with you. Actually, this horse has
an incredible pattern, Bruno. The second time off the layoff
back in June of last year out at Mammouth, this
horse ran a very very solid race and has a
very similar pattern. The horse ran one sprint race at Mommouth,
came back and won in a route race at eight
(31:19):
to one, and he did the exact same thing running
a sprint race here at Tampa, newly turned five year
old from a good barn, and I really really think
it's an advantage to be inside going two turns. This
horse is also tactical, Bruno, in a race where there's
not a whole heck of a lot of speed. So
I you know, with Louis Saiah as aboard, you've got
a rider that you know is going to get this
(31:42):
horse in position. In fact, I see a couple of
horses that might be faster than him early, a horse
named one Sharp Cookie might be showing a little bit
of speed in here. But I think this horse is
going to get a good position, perhaps third or fourth,
right behind the speed saving ground around the first turn,
which I think is a is a really good spot
to be with a really good pattern. So Bruno, we're
gonna uh take a time out here, we're gonna go
(32:04):
to our first break. Thank you so so much for
coming on and uh and and uh giving us some
information on these machines and on some of the workouts.
I appreciate it. Buddy.
Speaker 6 (32:17):
Hey, can I just say one more thing? Of course,
go go Chargers. That was a little of an oar,
you know, play, But let's go. Let's go l A Chargers.
You always send you the charges to me. Let's go
be Texas today.
Speaker 9 (32:37):
All right, buddy, Hey, thanks again for filling in. I
appreciate it. We are going to go to our first break. Uh, folks,
We're gonna go to our first break when we come back,
Jay Freed Leonard, thanks again, Bruno, great stuff, Buddy.

All right, we are back.
Speaker 10 (35:17):
We are back.
Speaker 9 (35:19):
Saturday morning, January the eleventh, trying to give you folks
a little bit of a reprieve from all that you
have going on. If you're out there, we're just thinking
the best thoughts for you.
Speaker 8 (35:34):
Boy.
Speaker 9 (35:35):
Just an interesting time. Sant Anita Racing probably doing the
right thing today. And I'm hoping my friend Jay Fried
Leonard comes on and tells me no, Steve, they are
going to race today, that our information was wrong again.
But I don't think that's the case. I think sant
Anita has canceled And is Jay available? Ja are you there?
Speaker 8 (35:57):
Good morning, Steve, Jay, Welcome to the show.
Speaker 9 (36:03):
On a very melancholy morning. I got to admit.
Speaker 10 (36:08):
Lots going on.
Speaker 9 (36:10):
Was planning on talking about the entire San an Anita card,
and thankfully we had some good information there from Bruno.
And I'm thinking that you're going to bail me out
here in the second half as well.
Speaker 8 (36:21):
How are you doing, my friend, I'm doing okay. Unfortunately,
like Bruno and maybe a little bit like yourself, you're
a little bit farther away. I've had some good friends
that have lost everything. It's really tragic. The fire is
spreading now. The big one, the Palisades Fire, has now
encroached into the hills over the San Fernando Valley and
(36:45):
is now encroaching westward toward the Getty Museum. So keep
an eye, stay safe. There's an app that most of
us up here are using, called the Watch Duty App.
I strongly suggest getting it. Gives you instant maps on
all the fires and keeps you up, especially if you're
in one of these areas that's borderline one of these
two big fires, especially the Palisades and the Eating Fire.
(37:08):
So yeah, please stay safe and watch for those evacuation notices.
I know sometimes they get them wrong and you get
an accidental one that wasn't supposed to go to you.
But if you get an evacuation number, get out of there.
You know, you can always, you know, replace that stuff later,
but you can't replace your life. Now. Having said that,
I do think san Anita made the right call, and
(37:30):
I just want to update what you'd given out earlier.
They have closed today and they have texted the horsemen
that they will be canceled tomorrow as well, so there
will be no Sunday racing. So it is going to
resume on Thursday, and I'm going to presume that you'll
get at least one more Thursday, maybe the following Thursday,
if everything's clear, to kind of make up for some
(37:51):
of these races, because yeah, and they'll be larger cards,
you know. Instead of eleven, there might be twelve or
thirteen races on them with the Northern California horses. So
let me some big racing cards to make up for
these down the line. But right now we just want
to say say, if if you do decide to go
out there, I believe the simulcast wagering will be open.
(38:12):
Training will be open until ten this morning for people
that own horses. Tomorrow is unclear the air quality index
right now this morning in Arcadia was one fifty eight.
One seventy five is unhealthy. So I suggest you wear
a mask if for any reason to go out to
the grounds. But this might not be the best day
to go out to the grounds.
Speaker 9 (38:34):
All right, Well, Jay, thank you so much for that update.
I know that you had a race that you wanted
to talk about.
Speaker 10 (38:43):
I don't know if you had two, but let's go
to that first, and then we were going to talk
a little bit about the Eclipse Awards.
Speaker 9 (38:50):
So Jay, if you would there's a race at Gulf
Stream that you wanted to talk about. Is at the
race that we just talked about with Bruno the tenth.
Speaker 8 (38:57):
It is, and you did give Bruno fair warning, so
I will go ahead and give my selection there, and
then if there's time, there's one other one we can
look at. And I do want to say I'm partially
in agreement with Bruno that I do think Cozeras is
gonna be a significant factor here, but that one was
not my first choice. Cozera should improve off that last
(39:19):
effort a sprint at Tampa after being on the shelf
for a long time, there was a seven for a
long sprint in a minor sakes race, and that will
set Cozras up nicely for improvement here. So Bruno could
well bring that one home, but that's not the one
I'm going for, and that's I like number three. Lure
him in. Lure him in, was the defending champion in
(39:39):
this race, won it last year, likes this distance and
in fact, that was the one race that that one
won at this distance over this course, over this track,
and lure him in six for seventeen over the track,
so really loves the track. Now. Last time out finished
behind Secret Chat, who Bruno mentioned, and I do think
(40:00):
Chat's going to get the lead at some point in
this race, sometime around the far turn. I'm expecting Secret
Chat to be, if not in front, right up there
with him. But lure him in as a little bit
longer fuse, and I just think lure him in can
catch him from behind. Edwin Gonzalez had a shot here
at a different horse, had a shot at Awesome Train,
(40:21):
and Edwin's won two straight on Awesome Train, but decided
to stick with loram In, who won this race last year.
So I'm liking number three luam In, and I think
it's going to be a ding dong battle with secret
Chat and with Brunos hors Cozeness. I'm going to lean
toward Loraram in getting them both at the end.
Speaker 9 (40:39):
And how are you going to play this race from
an exotic standpoint.
Speaker 8 (40:42):
Jane, Okay, I'm going to use that one in secret chat.
I'm going to use two others in a minor slot.
I'll use Awesome Train, the one that Edwin Gonzalez didn't ride.
I'll also use Big Martini, who I think would normally
have a big shot to win this but has a
smaller shot because buried out in the parking lot in
post twelve. Liking those two underneath, we'll play it like.
(41:02):
So we'll play the two I like best, lure him in,
and we'll use a secret chat on top, so three
to four with the other two. So it's gonna be
a three to four with three four, five twelve with all,
and then I'll play a saber ticket with those other
two on top five twelve with three four with all.
And obviously Cozaris that Bruno mentioned certainly figures right in there.
(41:25):
If you include him in your tripect efforts, I wouldn't
stop you. In fact, I might just join the parade there.
Speaker 9 (41:32):
All right, Jay, One thing I will say about both
of your horses is there two of them, kind of
an unusual race, Jay, And that not many of these
have actually gone two turns. If you look back, if
you look at all these horses in detail, horses like
a shacked diesel, horses like a one sharp cookie. These
(41:53):
are horses that have never gone two turns. They run
the one turn mile. It's a very different race to
go two turns. And as I mentioned with Bruno, I
really like to be inside in these races, which is
where lure him in and where Clozias is going to be.
I'm not going to take sides with either one of
you here. I'm going to stay on the fence here.
I'm going to stay neutral. But I like the fact
(42:14):
that both of your horses are going to have position.
And I like the fact that there are two horses,
two of only a few that have gone that mile
and at sixteenth or have run a two turn route
race which where a lot of these have only run one.
Speaker 8 (42:30):
Turn absolutely and Secret chats one of them. Because Gulfstream
Park it's a one turn mile down there. It's a
longer circumference, so you know, while a mile might be
a route for some of these horses, for some of
these others that have been running mostly a colstream, it's
a whole different ballgame. So absolutely correct.
Speaker 9 (42:50):
Yeah, and I'll tell you what also on sheets secret chat,
he really doesn't have much on the rest of these.
It's just not he just doesn't have races that are
what I would consider incredibly fast. For the favorite, his
chances of him running a better race, I would say,
(43:11):
are okay. I mean, he could run the best race
of his life. But if he runs the same numbers
that he has been running based on what he's accomplished
in his last two, which is last two were his
best two on sheets, this horse is only right there.
He certainly doesn't have anything over these. So race ten,
it's the three lure him in for our good man,
(43:33):
Jay Friedlander, Jay, I know that the Santa Anita was
the other track that we were going to go to.
Did you have time to pick out another race? It's
okay if you don't, but if you did, if you
want to go to that race, that would be great.
Speaker 8 (43:47):
Absolutely, let me give you a unique course because I
feel we're kind of cheating the fans a little bit
with no san Anita race and with Bruno and I
landing on the same one. Let's look on the golf
Stream card. We don't usually do two on the same car.
We'll do it today. Let's go to race four. It's
a maiden race and there's a number of first time
starters in there. But when you have an established horse
(44:09):
that has exceeded the par for the level, I am
always drawn to that when that one's a price, and
that's what we have here in number one Jack's promise.
Jack's promise dropped to the maiden one hundred thousand dollars
claiming level. That's a big piece of money to throw
out for a claim. But Jack's promise really improved there.
Didn't like those blinkers at all in the race before,
(44:31):
I mean, just went up the track, finished twelfth. They
shed those blinkers in the last one and ran the
race of his life, going six and a half furlongs,
giving a ninety one brist figure here and now comes
back and draws the rail here at Gulf Stream Park,
that's a favorable place to be. The rails playing at
eighteen percent wins. So liking number one Jack's promise at
fifteen to one. Over All of these well meant first
(44:54):
time starters, but we'll use some of them as the trifecta.
Speaker 9 (45:00):
I did see that there were scratches in that race
of the two consolidated and the four. I don't know
if I don't know if I'm gonna Gualilo. It looks
like it out is. I might have butchered that one,
but the two and the four are out, so we're
down to a field of nine. I don't know if
that's as big a factor.
Speaker 8 (45:16):
Jay.
Speaker 9 (45:16):
I know when I see eleven and twelve horses in
a sprint here in southern California, I know that starting
gate is going to be They're gonna put it right
up next to the rail with nine horses. Maybe there'll
be a little breathing room for Jack's promise down there.
Big Price horse Dale Ramins training this one. How are
you gonna play this one in the exotics, j Okay, I'm.
Speaker 8 (45:35):
Going to play an exact and a trifecta. Well, first,
we're gonna wheel that exact one with all and all
with one because it's a fifteen to one shot. I mean,
anything could pay well. And then we're gonna play a trifecta.
We're gonna key three of those first time starters, the
one for Brad Cox, the favorite number six Vanderbilt working
well for the debut, and the two plutchers number seven
(45:56):
Skate Away and number eight River Thames. We're gonna use
those on top. So it's going to be the trifecta
play on this race. We're gonna use one six seven eight,
and then for the second spot, we're gonna throw in
one other horse who I don't think can win, but
I think it hit the board, and that's number three,
White Whale from George Arnold. So it's one six seven
eight with one three six seven eight. With all it'll
(46:18):
be a little bit of a pricey ticket, but I
think it can pay something of it hits.
Speaker 10 (46:24):
Okay.
Speaker 9 (46:24):
So it's Jack's promise out at Gulf Stream in race
number four. Thanks for adding a little race there for us. Jay,
we're sort of doing this a little bit on the
fly with the cancelation of Santa Anita exactly. You and
I were gonna talk a little bit about and I
tell you what this was sort of on the background
that if we had time, and we certainly have time now,
(46:46):
you and I were going to talk a little bit
about the Eclipse Awards, so I'm gonna turn it over
to you and hopefully I can remember some of these
two year olds, because I'm not sure I remember all
of them if we're going to go through all of them.
But taken away on the Eclipse Awards, which is coming up,
when Jay, when is the Eclipse Awards going to be
and do you know where it's going to be at
(47:08):
this year?
Speaker 8 (47:09):
I don't have the exact day and time on that. No,
I believe it's usually the end of January, and I'll
see if I can pull that up while we're talking.
But yeah, let's talk about the awards themselves. And the
nominees were released during the week and I don't know
if all the time get to all of them, so
I'm going to kind of cherry pick the ones that
interest me and then we can go back if you know,
(47:32):
time permits. The two year old Philly, I do think
that Lake Victoria, who only had the one race in
America but it was certainly a standout race, is the
best two year old Philly in the world on the turf.
And normally if an American horse, you know, did fairly
well behind her in the Breeders' Cup. I might take
(47:53):
another look, but you had may Day Ready at twenty
to one and Nitrogen at forty to one behind her.
Neither one would you know, hit the board in Europe
in any of the big races. So I do think
Lake Victoria, even though it's only one American race, deserves that.
Was there anybody else you like? For Steve? The other
two nominees were good Cheer and Immersive who just went
on the shelf after an impressive campaign.
Speaker 9 (48:16):
I mean, Lake Victoria was absolutely off the charts. I
mean she was off the charts. She did not have
what I would consider would be a great trip or
probably of the winners in the Breeders Cup, she had
the worst trip, and one in a pretty darn easy fashion.
She looks like already looks like an older horse running
(48:38):
against two year olds there. That was just an absolute mismatch.
And I can't imagine anybody being better than her. But
it's really tough when these Euros only come over for
one race. I just don't know that there's anybody better
than her. JET have to go with Lake Victoria.
Speaker 8 (48:52):
Okay, let's look at the three year old males. You
had door Knock, Fierceness and Sierra Leone, who traded punches
throughout the year. Misstic Dan, the Kentucky Dermy winner, was
shut out. Certainly they gave Misstic Dan one last chance
to crack the nominees with the Malibu, but finished up
the track. And I never thought Mystic Dan was well
(49:13):
meant in a sprint anyway. This horse is, you know,
geared for long distances, and that was clearly a prep.
But I thought if they'd got one more grade one
of the belt, they might have changed a couple of
minds in the voting. But dor Knock, Fierceness and Sera Leoni,
just because Crilloni came up biggest in the biggest races,
I have to lean that way. What do you think.
Speaker 9 (49:34):
Now, I tell you, I mean, it's really interesting. Neither
one of those two, I mean, door Knock did but
Fierceness or Sierra Leoni did not win a triple Crown race,
which is really unusual. But those two really stand out
to me. I think Fierceness is a better horse because
he's tactical, and he still ran an unbelievable race in
the Breeders' Cup, and it's obvious to me, just in
(49:58):
the way they ran in the travers. Now, the one
thing about Sierra Leoni is is all his losses seem
to come at Saratoga, and obviously that track is speed biased,
but you know, Delmar could be considered speed bias. It
just was a race where he got some paste to chase.
I think Fierceness is a better horse, but I would
give it to Sierra Leoni because he won that Breears
Cup Classic, So let's say that. But I still have
(50:20):
to say that I think Fierceness is a better horse.
Speaker 8 (50:23):
Yeah, okay, and I think in talent terms you may
be correct, and hopefully they'll get a chance to settle
that on the track. This year. I think there's absolutely
no doubt that Torpedo Ana was the three year old
Philly of the Year. Not only that, I think she's
a contender to win any of the dirt races, from
sprint to a mile and a quarter. I don't know
that she'd win every one of them, but she'd be
(50:44):
right there in all of them. Any doubt on Sierra
and Torpedo Anna for U.
Speaker 9 (50:49):
Steve, No, No, She's probably for sure She's the Philly
of the Year. You know, she may even be horse
of the Year. Yeah, she's she's clearly the she's are
we talking three year old Philly here we are? Yeah?
Speaker 10 (51:08):
I don't.
Speaker 9 (51:09):
I don't know that there's even any competition. I don't
even know who the other two would be. But she's
clearly head and shoulders and obviously you know, she took
on fierceness in the Travers and maybe that was her
best race. I think she soured a little bit toward
the end of the year. I think she's better than
what she showed the last couple of races. I be
honest with you, I was thinking that maybe she wasn't
(51:31):
one hundred percent herself going into that Breeders Cup. I
just couldn't find anybody that I thought to Peter, but
she definitely was vulnerable that that race that she ran
at Philly Park. Uh still two, you know, just had
three or four just incredible races, including the one that
stands out was in the Travers. Absolutely head and shoulders,
(51:53):
and and yes, she would be my vote for a
horse of the year. So Torpediana not only wins this division,
but if we go to that later on, she would
be my horse of the Year. Jane.
Speaker 8 (52:05):
Yeah, no question about it. There's nobody I would even
consider for a Horse of the Year other than Torpedo
Anna at this point with such an outstanding campaign. The
other two three year old Philly candidates, by the way,
where turf forces ter Phillies Cinderella's Dream and she feels
pretty and as good as both of them are, I
think Torpedo Anna is a head and shoulder above both
of those. Looking at male turf force, this is kind
(52:29):
of an interesting category for me because it's another one
where rebels romance. Certainly, you know, did nothing wrong. Look
like the best turf horse that raced in America this year,
and he'd raced in America before he'd raced in America.
I believed two years ago he won a Breeders Cup race.
But he's only one. Yeah, but he only ran in
(52:50):
America once this year, and the two horses taking on
were Carl Stackler and Johannes And I'll just make my
commentary here. I think it's an oversight that more than
looks the Breeders Cup Mile winner is not one of
the three. I think more than Looks belongs. I know
Carl Spackler beat more than Looks a couple of times
back east, and so Carl Spackler is not an unworthy entrant.
(53:13):
But considering that more than Looks beat him and went
at counted in the Breeders Cup mile uh and Johanna
has had the unbelievable streak out here and out finished
Carl Spackler in the Breeders Cup race, I think Carl
Spackler is the one that I would throw out, and
I would put more than Looks in there, but more
than Looks the voters did not agree and it did
(53:34):
not make the final ballot. So out of those three, Steve,
I think there's a case to be made for not
Carl Spackler, but the other two Johannas and Reymbels romance.
Who would you give it to?
Speaker 9 (53:46):
Well the better horses Rebel this is this is the
same case as Fierceness and sier Leoni. I thought Fierceness
was a better horse, but I like the fact that
sier Leone won the Breeders Cup Classic and a couple
other you know, big three year old preps for the dirt,
so I gave it to him. This is a case
where I think Rebel's romance is clearly the better horse.
(54:06):
Even though I absolutely love Johannas and I would love
to see a West Coast horse win it, I just
think Rebel's Romance did it on the world stage, within
it with an incredible effort in Dubai where he just
ran them off their feet, and then in the race
at del Mar he was amazing in that he took pressure,
he went wide, we can't do that on that course
(54:27):
and he won it, where when it came down to
the big day, Johannes was unable to win. Gosh, you know,
Johannes had a great campaign, winning all but one race.
You know, again, I think Rebels Romance is the better horse.
Maybe I'm biased in here, but I'm putting in a
vote from my heart.
Speaker 8 (54:45):
I'm going with Johannas and I think Steve, You're going
to have a lot of votes. I think this is
gonna be one of the closest categories. I think, for instance,
Torpedo Anna for instance, will be absolutely unanimous. But I
think this could be a nail biters as the voting goes.
And again, just sorry that More Than Looks isn't in there,
because she deserves to be on that final ballot. And
(55:06):
then as time is growing short, I'm gonna look at
one more and that is the Trainer of the Year.
And while Chad Brown and Brad Cox are perennial entries
on this list and have huge barns and had huge
success throughout the country and especially back East and the Midwest,
Kenny McPeak makes the least this year with his two
(55:28):
very prominent contenders here and that's Kentucky Derby winner Misstic
Dan and Breeders' Cup Distaff winner and many other races
winner Torpedo Anna. Even though Kenny's got a smaller barn
and maybe it was less accomplished. Overall, this was a
career year for Kenny McPeak. I would have to give
it to Kenny.
Speaker 10 (55:47):
What do you think That's what the voters did last
year when they kind of went the sentimental way and
gave it to Bill Mott because Brad Cox just keeps
setting all these crazy records and Chad Brown has just
been there on all the big days.
Speaker 9 (56:00):
And uh and had a fabulous, fabulous year. Man, oh man,
I'm with you. I'm going to give it to Kenny McPeak,
And I think that's what the voters will do. You know,
the the weekend that he had the Friday and Saturday
that he had in Kentucky, Uh winning, winning, winning the
Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby. Uh. Well, that's a
(56:23):
once in a lifetime accomplishment. Maybe once in that, you know.
I don't know. I don't know how many trainers that
have done that. I don't has it not been done before?
Is that correct?
Speaker 4 (56:33):
Kay?
Speaker 8 (56:35):
I believe that is. I I'd have to go back
and look at the historical records, but in as far
as I know, it is the first time.
Speaker 10 (56:42):
Okay, I gotta I gotta go with you.
Speaker 9 (56:44):
I gotta go with Kenny McPeak. Yeah, I'm going with
Kenny McPeak as well. I mean, look the records that
Brad Cox said last year and he didn't win it
against Bill Mont because Bill Mont won a couple uh
Breeders Cup races and was amazing in the big races,
and the Cox had the highest percentage in the big
races and won the most great ones in the history.
(57:05):
And he didn't win it last what in twenty twenty three?
So I think for twenty twenty four, I think Kenny
McPeek is going to do it again. And Cox and Brown,
although they are both very, very solid and had incredible years.
I'm going to go with you and go with McPeak.
Speaker 8 (57:25):
Very good, Steve. Before time grows short and I know
we're close to winding up, I just want to mention
one thing. I had one winner I wanted to talk
about last week, and I wanted to mention that because
it actually points out an angle that Bruno pointed out
on the show, and that was Golfstream Park Race one.
That was my best prize winner last week. It wasn't
(57:46):
the radio play, but those who picked up my full card,
it was there, and of course our full cards are
available at Racingjason dot com. But the horse that won
was number ten, super Times, and super Times did quite well.
That this was a first time starter, and this was
an example that Bruno mentioned when sometimes a trainer will
have two horses and we'll put the less heralded jock
(58:09):
on the bigger price. He had Classy War and Jose
Ortiz was riding that one as the favorite first time
guelding first time LA six and Classy War, you know,
ran in the race. But he had a first time starter,
super Times. Dylan Davis, who's really come along, was put
on that one and was the much less heralded of
(58:30):
the two. And as Bruno pointed out, sometimes that less
heralded one does win because these trainers do bet and
super Times did quite well beating his much more heralded stablemate.
Speaker 6 (58:41):
And what was the way he paid?
Speaker 8 (58:42):
Jay paid nineteen bucks in an eighty four dollar EXACTA.
Speaker 9 (58:48):
Away, Jay? All right, all right, my friend, did I
hear that we are running out of time here? We
got ten seconds? All right, folks, we did what we
could today. You know, have a great day to day
watching NFL football. We're gonna wish everybody the best with
all that's going on. Best wishes to you all, and
(59:08):
Jason will be back next week. We'll talk to you then,
j Tar.
Speaker 2 (59:14):
You the Patriot AM eleven fifty.
