And now it's time for Inside Racing.
Speaker 8 (03:35):
Full hour of coverage on everything going on in the
sport of kings here in southern California and around the country.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
And here's your host, Jason Levine.
Speaker 8 (03:43):
He live from the iHeartMedia Studios in beautiful downtown Burbank.
It's Inside Racing with Jason Levine. Jay Friedlander in for Jason.
Jason is enjoying a family trip down to Australia with
missus Racing Jason, where perhaps she'll make some more successful
paddock picks. They have some fine turf racing down there,
(04:03):
and Jason is going to try to make it out
to the track if the time permits down there. But
don't worry, you've gotten me today. You're substitute teacher of
the Airways. Okay, I stole that line from George Napp
who fills in on Coast to Coast, But hey, they
are an iHeart Fox property, so we're in good standing there.
But we have a packed show today. We have Steve Pollock,
(04:24):
well coming up shortly Bruno de Julio at the bottom
of the hour special guest friend of the show, Michelle
you closing us out today and Zach running the board,
so we're loaded. So yeah, let's just have my usual
brief periphery around the world of sports outside of horse racing,
because there are other sports. Yes, I know it's hard
(04:44):
to believe, but Dodgers news high Sung Kim signed for
utility infield position type use and no, Gavin Lux is
not going anywhere for those people that keep wanting to
trade him. You're gonna see Jimmy Garoppolo fill in this weekend,
making his debut starting for the Rams as they try
to make sure that Matt Stafford doesn't get broken before
(05:05):
the playoffs. The Lakers just acquired Dorian Finney Smith. Dorian
Phinney Smith will be kind of the replacement for Jared Vanderbilt,
who seems to spend ninety percent of his career on
the injured list and the other ten percent actually playing
until he gets injured again. So hopefully that will help
and give us what we need there. But the most
interesting news tight is Kawhi Leonard returning from another injury
(05:29):
for the Clippers, and the Clippers have been playing tremendous
basketball in his stead. Jason, I know, is happy to
hear that, being a huge fan the Knicks, his other
team are also having a fine season. So considering how
well the Clippers have played without him, if you're one
of our Vegas people or one of our colleagues there
like John Lindo or Bruce Finkelstein, might be a good
(05:51):
time to get down a futures bet on the Clippers.
Just saying so, anyway, we're ready to go today, and
I just want to have a brief chat with you
on one of my favorite topics, which is not actually
the handicapping, but wagering on the races. And I just
want to mention that one of the things I look
for because those that get my picks know that it
(06:14):
says in the description that Jay has taken down numerous
pick fours and pick five somewhere he's been the sole winner. Yeah,
that's kind of my specialty. I structure tickets to try
to take these things down.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
And one thing you.
Speaker 8 (06:26):
Want to look for, it's kind of like, let me
give you an analogy here when you're counting cards in blackjack.
My former career I tried to make it a career.
But anyway, there's a guy named Ian Andrewson who wrote
a book Turning the Tables on Las Vegas, and the
importance was not the method you used for handicapping, because
there are a lot of card counting methods and most
(06:49):
of them work, even though there are variations. They work
to different degrees. Some are better than others, some are
more complicated than others. And horse racing is the same thing.
There are lots of ways to skin it. Cat Steve Pollock,
for example, is a turf and bias specialist and he's
put that to good use over the years. Brunard Giulio,
of course, is one of the premier, if not the premiere,
(07:11):
a workout analyst in the country, and he knows these
things better than anybody else. And what I try to
look for when I'm putting a bet together is regardless
of the handicapping methods I use. And I've been a
pace handicapper, I've been a class handicapper, I've been a
speed handicapper, and they all have advantages. Speed gets a
little over bet. But the point that I'm making is
(07:34):
look for a race that you can narrow down regardless
of what method you use. What I try to do
before I make an exotics wager, which is my specialty,
is I try to narrow it down to where I
think only two horses can win three at the most
if it's a big field. But generally I'm looking for
one race it's two horses, and then I can build
around them. I'm then looking for, in the same sequence,
(07:57):
a full field, and I know it's harder to find
full fields these days, but looking for a full field
of ten, eleven, twelve where lots and lots of horses
have a shot one of them hopefully will be a
big price, and then trying to put those together in
a combination and make an affordable pick four, pick five
trifecta ticket. And to me, that's always been the key
(08:18):
to success. I had a nice one this week at
the fairgrounds where there are a lot of scratches, and
because of the rain, so races came off turf, and
suddenly a ticket or a card that looked like it
was going to be unplayable because just too many possibilities
became very playable. And but one race on the dirt
was still right there, intact and a big long shot
(08:39):
came into that one and it was kind of a
nice reward. So anyway, that's my little spiel on betting methods.
So just what's going around the country today. There's steaks
actions at Gulf Stream, Mucho Man Steaks and the Ginger
Brew Steaks at Gulf Stream Park. Oakland's got the Mockingbird
and the Smarty Jones. And if you don't see flop
(09:00):
In Pratt around southern California to day, he's riding hot
property in the Smarty Jones for Brad Cox. So nothing
amiss with Fabian, He's just out of town. But sant
Anita has the biggest races today. We have the Grade
two San Vicente. We're gonna see Bullard, who has been
a phenomenal undefeated three year old or newly turned three
year old so far in the Grade two San Decente.
(09:22):
And then we have the Grade three Los Flores. Steve's
gonna talk a little about that, so I'm gonna leave
that alone, and I'm going to ask for our guest
Michelle U to weigh in a little bit on the
San Decente. So we're gonna have full coverage of that
and we might even prevail on Bruno to talk about
that Smarty Jones race as well. So I'm gonna give
you my first pick right now, and we're gonna go
to Gulf Stream Park. It's not gonna be one of
(09:44):
those stakes races, but we're gonna look at race seven.
It's a ten thousand dollars claimer, and that ten thousand
dollars claimer has a number of contenders here and the
favorite here is a number five Mobou, and Mobou comes
off a a nice narrow win at this ten thousand
dollars level for Sandino Hernandez, an underrated trainer down there
(10:07):
to be sure who wins With twenty five percent of
claiming repeaters, Edwin Gonzalez returns. So Moobu certainly figures in
the mix, but the one I like is not Mobu,
and that is number seven. I'm sorry, that's not number seven,
that's number nine. Mailman money from Kelly Breen. This one
is dropping in class. Was riding for twenty thousand dollars
(10:28):
last time, and now price is cut in half or ten.
Shows some tactical speed before fading, and that speech should
carry a lot longer at the ten thousand dollars level.
Johnny Velaska has got to know Mailman Money last time,
and I think with that familiarity and with the class drop,
Mailman Money is a standout on this race card. So
(10:49):
it's actually my favorite bet of the day. So we're
gonna look for Mailman Money. We're gonna play the following
horses underneath. We're gonna ease not only the favorite Mobu,
but we're gonna use Valentine, bug A, Nesto Melick and
the Doorman in the trifecta. So let's see, we're gonna
use We're gonna play it as follows. We're gonna play
a fifty cent trifecta with number nine Mailman Money on
(11:09):
top nine, with three five six ten twelve with all
and then we're gonna play two ten dollars savers the
least cost you ten bucks three five six ten twelve
with nine with three five six ten twelve, three five
six ten twelve with three five six ten twelve with
number nine Mailman Money. And now without further ado, because
(11:32):
we've got a pack show today, we're gonna see if
mister Steve Pollock is available to talk right now? Do
we have Steve?
Speaker 9 (11:40):
I am available? JA, Good morning, how are you doing?
Speaker 8 (11:43):
Good morning, Steve, how's the weather down there in sunny
San Diego? Probably not so sunny in this early huh, little.
Speaker 9 (11:51):
A little bit overcast here, but it's starting to burn
off and I'm sure it's going to be a nice day.
Got a very very mild winner, as you know, and
should beautiful out excellent.
Speaker 8 (12:03):
Well, Steve, you've been playing more and more tournaments lately,
kind of going back to your roots when you used
to play a lot of tournaments and you've been ramping
that up again. We have a lot of listeners that
would love to probably plan those same kind of tournaments.
But maybe you can just give us a little advice.
Where would those listeners start if if you were just
(12:25):
breaking in as a novice tournament player, what are some
good entry level you know, plays to make to get
involved in that scene?
Speaker 9 (12:35):
Jay, there's two there's two main tournament sites now. There's
horseplayers dot Com and Horseturneys dot com spelled and it
just like it, just like it sounds one word, and
you can go there and deposit money in one of them,
and you can actually have money in both because there
are actually tied together. So if you put money in
(12:56):
one account, you will have money in both. The horse
players dot Com jay is really a qualifying site for
two different tournaments, the Breeders Cup and the ANHC, which
is held in Las Vegas. So all your money will
go towards featers that go towards qualifiers, and if you
(13:19):
can win or finish second in one of those qualifiers,
you can get yourself a spot in either the Breeders
Cup or the NHC. Some of these qualifiers, like yesterday's
qualifier actually a Friday qualifier, had as many as four
hundred and some odd contestants and the top three did
get a spot in Las Vegas. These are very very competitive,
(13:43):
very very good players. Some of the best players, best
tournament players in the world are playing on this site.
And again it is strictly a qualifying site. If you
want to get in either the Breeders Cup contest, which
is a ten thousand dollars entry fee with a seventy
five it's actually ten thousand to get in in seventy
five hundred of that goes towards your live bank roll.
(14:04):
If you want to get in the BCBC, you want
to go and you want to look for qualifying first
it would be in a feeder and then you would
be in the actual qualifier for the Breeders Cup, and
they have for both Breeders Cup in the NAC. On
the other hand, the other side is horsetorneys dot Com
and they have daily contests which you're competing for money.
(14:24):
And I went on there last night to look, and
I'll tell you what all the tracks that you could
possibly imagine, sant Anita, Gulfstream, Aqueduct, Laurel Tampa, Delta Downs, Charlestown.
I just wrote down a few that are going today.
They've all got individual contests going, and you can play
for as low as two dollars. I saw a bunch
(14:45):
of two dollars and five dollars contests where you can compete,
say you can put two dollars up and compete against
five or six others for say ten dollars first prize,
or you can compete for it with a two dollars
or five dollars entry fee against maybe a hundred people
and compete for perhaps one hundred dollars first prize. But
you're going to have to go on and look because
(15:06):
every single day they have maybe a couple one hundred
different tournaments that you could get in. Believe it or
not and anything. You have heads up matchups if you
just want to play one random contest for I wrote
down the amounts of those for fifty seven dollars, where
you would put up fifty seven and compete against four
(15:27):
other people for say two hundred and fifty dollars to
one to one of the five contestants. Or you could
put up one hundred and fourteen dollars competing for five
hundred dollars to one of say five contestants, And then
you can do as much as I saw one last
night for fifteen hundred and eighty five dollars for fifteen
hundred dollars against one other person. So you can literally
(15:51):
can compete from anywhere from two dollars to fifteen hundred
dollars in one individual tournament, but an amazing amount of tournaments,
and you can certainly get the feel for it for
a few dollars to start. I certainly wouldn't recommend jumping
into one of those fifteen hundred dollars ones to start,
because those are generally the better players that are going
to be playing for that bigger money. But there are
(16:12):
very good players playing for smaller money, and it's not
it's certainly not easy. These are good players and again
some of the sometimes the better players are just smaller
players and very very competitive, but certainly a lower overall
takeout than what you will see in you know, at
the racetrack, and it's certainly a very interesting way to play.
Speaker 8 (16:35):
I'll tell you.
Speaker 9 (16:36):
The biggest benefit for me right now, Jay, is is
that the betdowns, which have become so such a big conversation.
We've talked about it on this show many many times.
They will affect you less when you're playing heads up
because you're not playing for money. You're playing for a
bigger for to get a bigger score, a bigger total.
But everybody literally is affected the same way. And because
(16:57):
you get a bet down, hey it may cost you
a qualifying spot, but it's certainly not going to cost
you dollars out of each beat. And I think that's
one of the biggest benefits is you don't have to
worry about the betdowns. But uh, a lot of action
going on every day at both of those sites.
Speaker 8 (17:15):
Yeah, that's excellent information, Steve, And uh, can you just
repeat those two sites again for those that didn't write
it down.
Speaker 9 (17:23):
Absolutely Advance horseplayers dot Com and horse attorneys dot com,
attorneys being t O U, R N E Y S
dot com. UH, and players just like it sounds.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
And again we'll go on to those sites.
Speaker 9 (17:38):
There's all sorts of information on there you can read
and and UH and you'll be able to see what
tournaments they offer. And UH really really uh, I think
a new opportunity for horse play for horse players. UH
to go on either site.
Speaker 8 (17:55):
Great great information, Steve, and UH. Let's talk about a
horse or a race that might be an important race
today for tournament players that are playing in tournaments today.
And we're going to talk about the Lost Flores real
briefly before we get into our pick. And there seems
to be a very strong favorite in the Lost Flores
a horse that completed and competed in the Breeders' Cup
(18:17):
name Pleasant, And I just wanted to see what your
take is on that race. Is anybody capable of beating
Pleasant in the race? And if not, how would you
play the exotics to give us the best chance of
making some money?
Speaker 9 (18:32):
Now, Jay, I'll tell you what These horses coming out
of the Breeders Cup, especially ones that run as big
as Pleasant, are generally horses that I think you can
look to try to beat. However, this horse ran an
absolutely spectacu in a race in the Breeders Cup Philly
Mayor Sprint. She was only beating a half a length,
(18:53):
was up on the pace in a seven furlong race,
which is really if you go back and you look
at the at the at the Delmar Fall seven furlongs
is you didn't want to be up on the lead,
and especially going forty four and one, and especially dueling
with a horse like Society. In fact, the horse that
won that race of horse named Sullivan Angel came from
last I mean pleasant just ran a huge one. A
(19:16):
couple of interesting things about her, Jay she's only five
or she is five and only has a total of
five races, which is very unusual. This is a really
lightly raced Baffert. He's given this one some time, and
boy does she draw perfectly to me. If you wanted
to try to beat her in here, it would probably
(19:37):
be a horse coming from off the pace. I know
you're going to like a different selection to me. She's
very fast and pushing. This is the horse that's probably
going to try to go to the lead and maybe
be quicker than her. But it's pretty hard to be
quicker than her. By the half, She's going to be
right there at forty four and change, and I think
it's going to be very difficult to beat her that way,
(19:57):
and I really couldn't find a closer. Maybe rich She
is a second time baffort in the country, coming from
over in Chile with some good races over there. To me,
this is an unbettable race. I think it's a very
difficult race. If I was trying to play through this race,
I probably would use the three in the six in
(20:17):
the pick four. And I know that sounds extremely extremely
chalky if you want to just single the six in here,
But to me that the other three races in this
late pick four sequence are really fabulous, and I always
will continue to play. If I like two of the
four races, sometimes I'll just try to tie those two together.
But if I can go with three, I don't care
(20:39):
what the other one is, I'm going to still play it.
And that's why I still like this late pick four.
But to me, Jay going to be very very difficult
to be pleasant, and I think Richie is the most
likely competitor to beat her. But to me, pleasant does
lay over this field.
Speaker 8 (20:55):
All right, sounds like pleasant is a pick four single
for Steve Pollock, and it's hard to just agree with
that fine record. And Steve, you got the New Year's
off to a good start with quick Kate on New
Year's Day fifteen dollars and sixty cents to win, and
King picked four that paid seventy six dollars. But Steve,
that was four days ago. What are you going to
do for us today?
Speaker 9 (21:18):
Well, we're going to play race seven Jay. This is
there's a very very big favorite in here and a
horse that has a reputation that is certainly pretty darn exciting.
The two horses in here, Eagle's flight is the same
as out of the same damn, a damn named feathered
that this damn through none other than maybe the best
(21:39):
horse that you and I have ever seen. And I
don't know if I've ever asked you this, but but
it was always a pretty close call to me, is
who the best horse I'd ever seen was? Until I
saw a flight line run a few years back and
early in his career, I started to really realize how
great this horse was. And I actually would get nervous
every time he ran, and even in the Breeders' Cup
(21:59):
because I thought maybe this would be sheer perfection and
for him to run the two races that he ran
the last two races in the Pacific Classic and in
the Breeders Cup. I think it left the impression on
a lot of people, especially a lot of the new
folks to the game. But for someone who's been in
the game for thirty forty years like myself, I had
never seen a better horse than flight Line in my
(22:20):
life and this one is out of the same damn
so the expectations of this one are incredible. And first
time out, this horse drew down toward the inside and
the two posts didn't break all that well, got behind
horses and really really made a nice run and just
proved best. I think it's an interesting that they're putting
(22:42):
blinkers on this one today and stretching this one out.
We certainly know the pedigree is there, but there's a
lot of pressure and a lot of reputation that comes
along with this horse. There's also a horse in here
named Miramadi who's five to two is the second favorite,
and I got to be honest with you, Jay, this
is a horse that I have been playing against on
a regular basis. Since this one's second or third start,
(23:03):
I have really made an effort to perhaps bet a
little bit of extra money. And yes I did go
down in a big way when this horse won the
race by ten lengths, but at one for ten, I
really think that this horse is just not quite living
up to the expectations of the name. Because I think
Marrimati Frank that is, is a terrific race caller, and
(23:24):
really I think he does an incredible job, but that
has nothing to do with this horse. To me, this
horse is a very suspect runner. The horse I like
in here Jay is a little bit of a price
that I think could perhaps upset the two horse Eagles flight,
and that is the seven horse Invigorated. Number seven Invigorated
came out first time out from the ten hole the
(23:44):
outside post at Gulf Stream Park, very very difficult to
do and actually ran going wind throughout a very very
good figure. This horse's race extremely competitive there, and next
time out did not run a very good one at
till when this horse came out second time out that
was Derby weekend and ended up laying off a little bit.
(24:07):
Has come back and really run two absolute quality races
both times being wide losing a length and then losing
Tosuanios last time, but going very wide from the twelve
hole at Delmar extremely difficult to do. In fact, even
that sixth closes horse was wide at Delmar coming out
of the chute. But this one is actually out of
(24:29):
a mayor named Cambria Corsica and she was ale course specialist.
But the breeding is there on the top side and
on the bottom to me to go along on the dirt,
which obviously this horse has been successful with first time out.
I know this horse is training well in the morning,
and I think at eight to one, this horse offers
some good value in here. And I think also that
this horse will show more speed than this horse has
(24:49):
shown in the two dirt races. And I see a
couple of horses toward this one's inside that maybe arn't
as quick. The speed looks like the three New King
and the four Maramadi. I'm not sure where New King is.
The figures aren't bad on this one. I'm sure Eagles
Flight is going to get over Bet in here with
that reputation and with what this horse has to live
(25:11):
up to. But that means that the wind Bet is
probably going to be the most attractive thing. I'm gonna
look at a couple EXACTA boxes in here. I'll play
a saver with the two Eagles flight, and I'll use
the three New King trying to beat the four Miramani altogether.
And the key plight for me if I can get
anything six to one or above is on the wind.
Bet here a number seven Invigorated. It's the seven Invigorated
(25:35):
in the seventh race out of sant Anita today.
Speaker 8 (25:38):
Yeah, I think it's telling that arad Ortiz, the champion
jockey for most of the last five years. I think
this year he'll met He might be challenged in the voting,
but he's chosen to ride this horse twice out here
when he's come out here for other cards. So obviously,
when somebody like that thinks highly of almost like Invigorated
got a shot and yeah, Eagles flights and laid off
(26:00):
for quite some time, so could be vulnerable. Steve, thanks
for all the insight and we'll look forward to seeing
you take over the show next week and give us
your turn on you know what's going on in racing?
Speaker 3 (26:13):
All right?
Speaker 9 (26:13):
Jay, Well, thanks for filling in for Jason. Have yourself
a great, great day. I hope the fans have a
great day today and look forward to talking everybody next week.
Speaker 8 (26:22):
Thank you, Steve. And now it's time for my other pick.
We're going to go to sant Anita. Right now, Steve
just gave you race seven. Well I'm going to give
you race eight. And let's look at race eight here,
and that's the favorite. Here is up at the top.
That's number one, Double Jab from the Anti Mathis barn
Andy often produces a price, but today he's the favorite.
(26:43):
He's beaten both Refocus and Afternoon Nap, though he was
disqualified and finished behind Afternoon Map. And this time, you know,
double Jab is certainly no value at three to one,
certainly has all the credentials to win again like he
almost did two back before they took him down. But
I'm gonna go with the horse out of the same
last race, and that's Refocus number four from the Doug
(27:06):
O'Neil barn Antonio for Zoo returns. This one just broke
badly like he normally does. He's not exactly you know,
swift out of the gate, but came out and made
a nice run at del mar Off brieflyoff and just
finished right behind Double Jab, really flying down the lane
at the end, but just left himself too much to do.
And that race was at five furlongs. Today, get six
(27:29):
furlongs and he's back at his favorite track where out
of four wins, he's got to win a place and
a show. He's hit all the marbles there. Number four.
Refocus today with that extra furlong to get the job
done and catch Double Jab at the end. And let's see,
we're gonna play the trifecta like this. We're gonna play
Refocus and Double Jab a little more than afternoon nap.
(27:52):
We're gonna use afternoon at mainly underneath. So we'll play
a dollar trifecta one four with one four to six
with all. We're gonna play one four with all with
one four to six and then just in case after
a nap improves a little today it happens, we're to
play a dollar trifecta box one four six, and we're
going to cover all the bases. What have I done
for you lately and my role as a handicapper on
(28:13):
the show, Well, one big play last weekend, and I
was proud to do that and that was a play
that was in one of the stakes races, and what
I really liked in that race we were trying to
beat in the stakes. White a Barrio, who I've had
never really cared for, and I've always thought that, of course,
was a bit overrated, was two for two at the
(28:33):
seven furlong distance, but those two had come at sixty
two to five claimers. Recently, that former Grade one winner
has been really tanking in the stakes, and I just
thought Mufasa would get first run and White a Barrier
would just have too much to do, and that's exactly
what happened. Mufasa made the leader early, put away the
cheap speed and went on to win that race, king
(28:57):
a ten dollars and twenty win ticket one hundred and
thirty dollars try. And I just want to say, White
a Barrio is now a Pegasus hopefull off that prep
because yeah, that that race wasn't the hill to die for.
I don't think White a Barrio is what he was.
I don't think he's that Grade one winner that he
used to be anymore. I will echo Andy Bayer on
a previous worse years ago, White a Barrio cannot win
(29:19):
the Pegasus. He will not win the Pegasus. We'll be
right back after the break with Bruno de Julio.
Speaker 7 (29:25):

Speaker 8 (31:39):
On and welcome back to Inside Racing with Jason Levine.
Jay Friedlander in for Jason this morning. I'm kind of
continuing Jason's theme with the theme music and you're listening
(31:59):
to use at ground LA. I'm playing some of the
favorites that I grew up with today. So you heard
Rank and File, one of the first cowpunk bands, and
that was of course Los Lobos covering Come on, Let's
go from the Richie Vallin's biopic LaBamba, which was certainly
a fine movie. I wanted to mention one of our sponsors,
Santa Anita, certainly has been a fine contribute to the
(32:23):
show over the years. And Santa Anita, of course works
in conjunction often with the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association, and
I just wanted to mention that the California Thoroughbred Breeders
Association twenty five excuse me, twenty twenty five Stallion season
online auction will be held Monday, January sixth, seventh exclusively
(32:43):
via www dot saleering dot net, where you can actually
bid on seasons. If you've got say a mayor that
you want to, you know, try to get to the
races and have her, you know, made it up with
you know, one of our premiere stallions that might be available.
A preview of these seasons offered will be available for
(33:05):
viewing on Saturday, January fourth at www dot sal ring
dot at. The bidding starts Monday, January sixth at eight
am Pacific time, concludes Tuesday, January seventh at apm Pacific time.
All seasons lists start are being sold with no guarantee,
but proceeds from the auction benefit the ctba's Political Action
Committee Fund, which works in support of legislation to favorably
(33:26):
impact California breeders. The auction features seasons to twenty nine
California stallions, including perennial leading California sires. Stay thirsty to
view the list of seasons available. There is a stallion
season auction list, but again go to see that go
to www dot sale ring dot net. Just like it sounds,
(33:47):
s A L E R I n G dot net
and for more information, you can contact Christy Chapman Christy
at CTPA dot com. And now, without further ado, let's
welcome Bruno to Julia to the show. Good morning, Bruno.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
Hey, I was listening earlier and I got a chuckle
because it sounded a little bit like point counterpoint. Remember
that OLSNL skit with Jean Curtains and dan Aykroyd between
you and Stee talking about things. So I did get
a chuckle. And good job with Steve. He's always really
good on the radio.
Speaker 8 (34:23):
Absolutely Steve not only as a fine handicapper, but he's
an entertaining personality to listen to. And come on, we're
in the entertainment business here, Bruno, and you certainly fill
your quota there as well.
Speaker 4 (34:34):
Jay.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
I'm known Steve for a long time and we've got
some stories for you one time when we all get together.
Speaker 8 (34:43):
I will look forward to that. So, Bruno, I just
wanted to say last week, unfortunately Oakland Park was washed
away and we didn't get your pick to run. But
I did want to mention that you mentioned Spearfish on
the show in passing. He didn't really have a lot
of time to flesh that out, but nice win from Spearfish.
Seven dollars and twenty cents. But you know, let's talk
(35:06):
about something else here because you have your your website
there and it's very informative. I've been a subscriber to
that for a while, racing with Bruno, and you'd put
a nice article together that was a little provocative about
computer assisted wagering. So I want to talk about that
a little bit before we got into today's picks, and
(35:27):
just wanted to kind of get the skinny and your
take on what's going on. Obviously, the computer aided assisted
wager errors have a big edge, being able to bet
these sums that go undetected and then plunge into the
pools at the last minute, and to dismay of many players,
they see that nine to one shot dropping the five
(35:48):
to two, and that's always frustrating Bruno. What's going on?
How is this impacting the game? Obviously it's significant, But
what's going on with a computer assistant wagering? And is
there a way that you can kind of play around
it and use it to your advantage or are do
they just have too much advantage?
Speaker 3 (36:09):
Let me put put it. Let me give you an example. Okay, uh,
if the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Penguin's gonna play
who's gonna win?
Speaker 8 (36:21):
Uh, they're not gonna play, right, it's not the same sport.
Speaker 3 (36:26):
Too many horse players waste their time and emotions worrying
about the c aws. The c aws are not playing
your game. The caws are out there making wagers to
break even. Why because when they break even, they're all
(36:47):
they want to do is break even or even just
lose ten because they make it up in the kickbacks.
That's the whole. That is the whole c aw's mission statement.
It's got to win the race. It's to break even
over our entire bunts because they're gonna make kickbacks. They're
gonna make on top of the money they're playing. So
(37:07):
if they bet two million dollars and they get a
six percent kickback, you do the math. They make one
hundred and twenty thousand dollars for the month. So they're
not in it for the same particular reason we are.
We are to try to take a winner, bet the
winner and make money doing we're to break even.
Speaker 8 (37:27):
Jay I can't make a living that way, No you can't, but.
Speaker 3 (37:33):
They can because of the kickback they get. So horse
players in a lot of ways, waste too much time
and emotion on the CWS. Quit it now. Some of
them have taken my suggestion that was made on Ted
Lasso when when he talked about be a goldfish and
have a short term memory. Some people have really gone
(37:56):
too far with that and and and completely forgotten everything.
Society as a whole has an amdia. We forget about history.
We do the same mistakes over and over again. All
you have to do is look over on Twitter now
formerly Twitter now call X. But hey, you know what,
some people forget what they had for lunch at dinner time.
(38:18):
But I do give them a nine plus effort for
actually trying to be a goal fist. But nowadays people
don't remember anything. So here's a reminder. Caws are not
competing with you. They're competing, They're not competing with anybody.
All they want to do is break even. So why
(38:39):
worry about that? You can't do anything to control it.
You can't tell them not the bet. They can't tell
you not the bet. You can't tell them not to
do it, So why you worry about it? Stick to
your game, stick your plan. Take the winner, cash a ticket,
and that's where the bottom line is you want to
cure your blues from the caws. It's cash a freaking winner,
(39:01):
and when you do that, you actually make money. And
what the horse got backed out? Okay, well, then if
we're going to take the cews of what they do
and the horse gets backed down, then how about horse
players being worried about that owner that's that inside info
on a horse. And if that's it on a cash
and the horse drops in class, how about we're gonna
worry about all the bad morning lines out there. And
(39:24):
really that's another issue where you've got morning line makers
making horses twenty to one that really belonged to be
about nine to two, five to one. So when the public,
when the public adjustice that bad morning line, people go, oh,
somebody knows something. No, they don't. It's the morning line
that's bad. But again, horse players completely forget that every
(39:48):
single day they play that goldfish too. I mean, you
ever sat there and looked at a goldfish and he's
looking at you, I prob forgot you saw you? You
know two seconds later, you know, pay attention, pay attention
to what's going on. If it's a bad morning line.
If you look at a horse and go got this
(40:08):
or shouldn't be twenty to one? And when he's beat
down twenty one, oh, somebody knows something. You know, then
you're just another idiot that just running, you know, that's
running through the windows on something that is obviously erroneous.
And that is the biggest problem in racing, worrying too
much about CW's worrying too much about what the price
of the horse is. Pick the winner, just like Ermino
(40:32):
Edwards said in that famous press conference, you play to
win the game. That is my editorial on CWS.
Speaker 8 (40:42):
Goock question for you Bruno. Years ago, of course, we
had a little bit of a scandal going on where
it seemed like people were able to get a bed
in a little bit after the post gone off, and
you know, we actually reacted to that to a point
where we were restricting betting for the last minute. You
couldn't get a bet in the last minute, and that
caused problems because horses were acting up in the gate
(41:05):
and you couldn't get out of your bet, you couldn't
get into a new bet. So horse players really didn't
like that. And supposedly the technology has improved where that's
not a factor anymore. But fans look at the races
and these days, you know you'll see the odds drop.
Actually after the race has gone off, you'll see that,
you know, eight to one morning line shot down to
(41:25):
three to one as the race is already broken. Let
me just ask you this, This is your opinion only,
but do you think there's still a problem. Do you
think there's still any way that these bets are going
in and people are you know, the computer assisted wagers
are either to look at the brake and then put
their bet in a split second later or no.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
Anytime you have money involved with anything, anything as possible.
So do I have any proof of any pass posting?
Speaker 9 (41:56):
No?
Speaker 3 (41:56):
Do I believe it's happening. I think what's happened. I
think that yst players Ce is And I'll refer to
something that happened a number of years ago. I had
a client that asked me if he could get me,
if I could get him in touch with some Gulf
Stream Park officials because he wanted to get into the
program because he's a big better. So I got him
(42:18):
in touch with Tim rittvo and Tim Rittvou told me,
he goes, yeah, I'll just put I'll put mister Anthony
right into the you know, uh, you know that's his
first name, Ant, but he put his name, you know,
I'll put him right into the pools. So a lot
of these computer wagering systems are hooked right into the pools.
(42:40):
They don't go through adw they don't go through anything.
They go right in the pool in the track pull.
So what happens. They can dump, they can dump all
they can do a computerize dumping all these these uh
they have a formula. They dumps all the wagers simultaneously
(43:03):
into the system in seconds. So if the track is
the thing that's going to close in thirty seconds, they
can automatically deliver all of those wagers into the system. Now,
what happens is is that that doesn't get calculated until
the next round, which is I think it's either ninety
seconds or thirty seconds. I don't know what the immediate
(43:28):
the immediate implementation of those wagers right into the system is,
but it just so it shows up during the running
of the race because they put it in right when
they closed up. Now, I used to watch on my screen.
I used to watch the pool totals, especially a gold stream.
Let's say it was one hundred thousand dollars in the
(43:49):
exact right with thirty seconds, right before the horses all
got into the gate. As soon as that gate was
like was as soon as those horses were in the gate,
that pool went up double. It went to two hundred
and something thousands. So all that money came in right
late and was added into the system. So a lot
(44:10):
of the wagering happens right at the end, right before
the gate the stewards shut off the betting. Because the
stewarts are the ones shut off the betting. They have
a button that they hit, you know, and they shut
off all the betting, and it's tie. You can't get
in anymore. So to me, to me, that's just the
(44:33):
ratifications of people drump dropping in computerized wagers into the
system right at the last minute, so the they even
last second. So a lot of that. You know, there's
there's a hysteria about it, but you know, you can't
do anything about it, right Jay, It's not like we
(44:54):
have any control. So if I can't control something I
can't worry about. I can say something about it, but
that's it. I can't I can't do anything to control it.
And that is the biggest problem. Too many horse players
spend too much time talking about the c aw's and
less time worrying about who they're gonna bet to win
to win, you know, and then that's the.
Speaker 8 (45:17):
Problem well put through no. So anyway, we have a
dry day at Oaklahand Park today. Can we get a
quick take from you on the Smarty Jones one of
the better races around the country today. Ploppy and Prout
down there and he's riding pop Property for Brad Cox.
What do you think?
Speaker 3 (45:35):
You know, it's an interesting race because there's a lot
of different you know, Kale's Angel was very, very impressive,
and there's one race down there, and that's the horse
that I saw training at del Mar and I liked
him a lot. Was working with a with a gumba
named brother Tony that I thought was actually pretty good.
It just ended up as not done as much. So
Kale's Angel looks very like a player. We also liked
(45:57):
the three optical. Optical is listed at at twelve to one. Again,
I don't pay attention to the morning lines, but I
know a lot of people want to hear, well, what's
you in the morning line. It doesn't fricking matter because
the public will adjust that line to what that horse's
chances are, so optical as a play there, he's got
(46:18):
actual conceptcy on own for heat the Sormo coming up
from Baregrounds, we had a decent work in company in
company on December twenty eighth. We have a video of
that too, and also we use the the five excuse me, yeah,
the five horse more quality for Christopher Davis coming in
(46:40):
from Turfway. We had to work out on that with
a video at Turfway Parks shipping in. So it's a
really interesting race that the short price phrases our property
worked with a really good horse and the ambitionous day
that is a older horse winner, really good sprinter. For
Brad Cox property was okay, he finished second best, but
(47:03):
he was working with a Steaks Hoorce printer that probably
you know, is much quicker than he is going shorter,
so you can't get a really a good line. However,
look at Bradcox's record. Can you tell everybody Bradcox's record
at Oakland right now?
Speaker 8 (47:17):
Oh right now, it seemed to be oh for fifteen
kind of uncharacteristic mister Cox.
Speaker 3 (47:22):
Right he and you know what, we get the videos
and you can go see them at Oakland dot com.
You can see him at Richmond Brune dot com. Then
go to Kate Kentucky bread dot org and you see
all the videos from Turfway Church Church, Turfway Fairgrounds, Keenland
and Oakland, and you can see we don't have a
whole lot on brack coops. He doesn't have a whole
lot right now. Maybe he's gearing up for later on,
(47:44):
which could be one of the things that he's doing.
He's getting all his horses ready to run later in
the spring and into into Kentucky and into the Triple Proum.
So I'm more liable when ourse trainer is over fifteen,
even though on his on his resume shows that he's
you know, he shows he's thirty percent trainer for this.
(48:04):
Let's say, what's this percentage for the year twenty twenty four.
Speaker 8 (48:09):
For twenty twenty four. Let's see, uh, Brad had a
pretty good year for twenty twenty four, but his percentage
for that year was do I have that? Wait a minute,
I don't. I don't have that, Anddy Bruno, oh do
wait I do? It's twenty six percent.
Speaker 3 (48:25):
Right, people see the twenty six percent That's another you know,
you know, like the Peter Griffith, you know family guy.
What grinds my gears, you know, is that people will say, well,
he's a twenty six percent trainer. Well yeah, but he's
over fifteen the last two weeks. That's that matter. So
you know, to me, I'm looking at him and saying, okay,
right now his barn is knock quite up to speed,
(48:47):
so he's not the twenty six percent trainer that he
was last year. Right now he's over fifteen. And that's
what I'm going to zero in on is the ability
of playing a barn when it's hot and ability to
lay off when they're cold. But a lot of players
don't do that, and that is another problem that they
That's one other thing that grinds my gears that Peter
(49:08):
Griffin's will say.
Speaker 8 (49:09):
No question, Hey, Bruno, we got about a minute left
on the segment. Let's go to golf Stream Race eleven.
That's your official big for the show.
Speaker 3 (49:16):
All right, Well, I do like this race. This is
the race where you've got the Mutro Macho Man. It's
another Triple Crown event that starts off the Triple Crown
season in twenty twenty five and in race ten, I
went with number two macho music. If you follow the
game the way I do I start and the bathroom
(49:37):
of pass performances and moved my way up. This was
had a phenomenal effort at Keemlan when it won really
really nicely, came back really or came back really quick
three weeks, got back the favorite and absolutely ran awful.
Why they brought him back too quick? Off a big performance,
bounced to the moon. They give them time to bring
(49:58):
them back because their teeth comes from fairgrounds to ride
him for Rohan crickten is those races voted with a
lot of decent horses, a lot of good speed in here.
I like the two matchio music and I'm not paying
attention to what the mood. The morning line is excellent.
Speaker 8 (50:12):
Man, he's going to get out there, there's no question
about that. Bruno, thank you for all the insight today.
We'll see you next week with mister Pollock at the controls.
Let's let's kill him.
Speaker 3 (50:22):
Today, all right, have a great day and everybody working here.
Speaker 8 (50:27):

Good morning. Thank you for getting up early as usual,
but we're in the horse business. You were probably up anyway.
Speaker 10 (52:24):
Yeah, nine o'clock is not early. Nine o'clock is like
winding down the morning getting ready for the races.
Speaker 8 (52:32):
Yeah, you had a very successful opening day at Santa Anita.
Who impressed you? And does anybody look like they could
have emerged as a contender for.
Speaker 3 (52:41):
The big cap?
Speaker 9 (52:43):
You know?
Speaker 10 (52:44):
I mean overall, I thought we just put it together
a really phenomenal card. I think that she feels pretty,
was so commanding in the American hopes that she was fantastic,
And overall we just had a really really great day.
I mean, looking at the results of the races and
the on back. Attendance was fantastic. Even just the undercard
(53:06):
races were great. It wasn't even just the greatest stakes
that we had. It was really great. Johannis obviously was
impressive in that he overcame maybe not the best of
trips where he was just buried down the inside. You know,
he didn't get to produce him until late in the
lane and he had to swing it outside it saving
a lot of ground. So he didn't win back at
(53:26):
the margin that I thought he could win, But I
just love the determination that he showed. Just such a
consistent horse. For me, it kicked the box or Champion
turf mail. Even though he didn't win the Breeders Cup,
I thought overall he was just massively consistent throughout the
entire year. So that was obviously a highlight as well
as far as him with the Big Cat too, the
(53:47):
Big Cap not necessarily, I feel that that feels kind
of gets I don't know, they cobbled together, but you know,
a little bit closer to when we see what horses
have gone where.
Speaker 8 (53:59):
It is a little premature for that, and we're kind
of focused on the Pegasus right now. Another property from
the same ownership group, so we'll see what's coming up
with that very soon in a few weeks. But let's
talk about today's races. We've got the San Vicente and
we have a very very impressive two year old turn
three year old in Bullard who's won two races, the
(54:20):
last one with ease. It was the Grade three Bob Hope,
looking like a very strong contender going into the classic
races if he can stretch out. What do you think
of Bullard and can anybody does anybody in that field
have a chance to knock him off?
Speaker 10 (54:34):
I mean, looking at Bullard, I think the thing that
he's overcome was he probably shouldn't have been a sprinter.
He's my gun runner out of a warrior's reward there,
so I just feel like he probably wanted to turns
all along, and yet he'd been able to be a
debut winner, besting a backer horse that had been training
really well who subsequently came back to winn his maiden
and then him and the Bob Hope. I mean, I
know it was a very small feel, but he looked
(54:59):
really good. But now my drawback is he set it
up for him up front, right, They absolutely sizzled and
he was able to not only real him in but
but when going away. I think seven's challenging, but also
it just set up for him from a pay standpoint.
So we'll have to see if today is going to
be as friendly. You know, there's a lot of horses
(55:19):
that have only just had one start, with the exception
of him and Mackenzie Street in here, and so at
this point of time, any of these horses can jump
up and really make an impact. You know, McKenzie Street,
we kind of know what he is. He's been knocking
on the doorries right there. I would be surprised to
see him whin. I wouldn't be surprised to see him
run second again. Barnes was a pretty good winner over
(55:42):
at Churchill. I mean I felt like he was I
don't know if he was green, or he was erratic
or what. You know, he he got the job done
and you know he had to shift to do it,
which is never easy for a juvenile. He's come back
and trained really boordly. I have to tell you he
schooled in a paddock the other day and he looks
like the leanest, fittest Olympic runner. Like a lot of
(56:05):
backer horsees come over really chunky, and he was. He
just looks like I don't know, he looks like a machine.
He looks so great schooling and then I have to
give Karen Hudley horse a look smooth cruising. He was
an impressive debut winner. He beat a couple of horses
that were well intended, including Journalism, who has subsequently been
(56:26):
a graded stakes winner. And the way he did it
was so easy. He has his own mental issues to overcome.
He got he's almost lost it in the paddock. I
know Ricky Gonzalez has been working with him, but he
would be very cool to see step up. But the
proven commodity is obviously Bullard. It doesn't look like he's
going to take a step backwards by any means. I
(56:49):
just don't know if they're going to go as fast
for him. So we'll have to see if he's as
effective closer to the pace.
Speaker 8 (56:55):
Absolutely, and with those smaller fields there's less of a
chance of a paste tool, so I'd have to earn
it today, so real quick. You're Ryan Hanson, a barn
that you're somewhat familiar with. I hear you know is
going after the early daily double today. If you can
give us maybe thirty seconds forty five seconds on each
(57:15):
of his two entries in the first and second. He's
got corn huskers shipping in in the second and the
first race. I'm gonna let you pronounce that name because
I don't want to gamble and miss it.
Speaker 10 (57:26):
His name is Ubachako. He's actually named after an episode
of Blue where they end up saying that name. You know,
I think this is a good level for him. His
biggest problem has always been himself. He is a complete
mental case.
Speaker 9 (57:41):
You know.
Speaker 10 (57:41):
We bought him as a baby. We broke in, We
had him at the farm and some days he is
like a normal horse. In sundays he is crazy. And
so if he comes out and he does his job, well,
I'll be happy. I was very upset with him, you know,
his trip last time, he got the worst possible trip.
He was all the way in the outside. He never
(58:03):
got like a fair chance to put a bit in.
Adrian kind of ran him up and then pulled them back,
and I don't know, he was all over the place.
So that was just not a good effort to me.
I think his prior race, ast sant Anita in the
twenty five Non two was obviously a lot more indicative
of what he can do. I still wish he was
a little bit more inside than he is now, but
(58:24):
you know, he could he could run fine if he
puts it all together mentally. How about that.
Speaker 8 (58:33):
Andship or Cornhusker Chris.
Speaker 10 (58:36):
Yeah, looking at Cornhusker Chris, we haven't had him that long.
We've only had him, you know, a couple of a
couple of weeks now, but he had a couple of
starts over on the East Coast and his biggest problem
has been getting out of the gate. So hopefully today
he'll be able to get out of the gate. And
schooled him extensively the last week or so, excellent.
Speaker 8 (58:55):
Well look forward to seeing that. I'm always curious to
see what these horses coming out of bigger purse races
can do. And corn Husker Chris has been running for
twice the twice the purse, so I'm just kind of
wondering if maybe he was aimed for, you know, bigger
and better things. Michelle, thank you for all the insights,
and let's have a great day out there to end.
Speaker 3 (59:13):
Even today, Yes, I hope so, thanks so much.
Speaker 8 (59:17):
Thanks for joining Michelle. You you've listened to Bruno di Julia,
who's listened to Steve Pollock Zach running the boards. I'm
Jay Friedlander filling in for Jason. It's always a blast
host the Inside Racing. Mister Pollock back next week hosting.
Have a great day.
