And here's your host Jason Levine.
Speaker 6 (03:41):
Yeah, good morning everybody. Steve Pollock filling in for Jason Levine.
Little R and R today for Jason uh and we
have the turf Festival. The turf Festival kicked off yesterday
with the Hollywood Turf Cup. Truly quality gets a job
(04:02):
done from an outside post rider. Vincent Chimenod rides, returning
five dollars and twenty cents. We will talk about that
Jock a little bit later with Jay who will be
with us here in about ten or fifteen minutes, and
then we're gonna have Bruno with us in the second
half of the show, and we're going to talk a
lot of racing today, a lot of racing. We have
(04:23):
again kicking off that turf Festival yesterday Sunday, the big
big day. We have the Grade one Matriarch. Boy Chad
Brown has been dominating that race. Gina Romantica comes here
fresh off a big effort at Keenland. She draws outside.
Maybe we can beat her tomorrow. I've not looked over
(04:43):
that race in total detail, but a g bullet is
the local hope for Richie Baltis and boy, what a nice,
nice Philly this one is. She ran her guts out
in the Breeders Turf Sprint. She's going to have to
stretch out for the matriarch tomorrow, but she's done that well.
She's done well before going the distance, and what a
nice Philly she is, and I think this might be
(05:05):
a little better distance for her, and I hope that
she does well. And Chad Brown has three other shippers
in the race, a horse named Child of the Moon,
tax implications and prerequisite. He's got three in there. I'm
sure that with General Romantica taking the lion's share of
the money and ag Bullet probably a strong second favorite,
(05:28):
that there could be some value on Chad Brown or so.
I'm going to look real hard tonight at those three.
We've got the Cecil b De Mill. It's a mile
race for the two year olds getting better and got
to start really watching those carefully as those horses are
going to be running all year. Next year is three
year olds and that del Mar Turf series that I love.
(05:50):
But Scipio goes for Baltus and clock Towers a shipper
there for Wesley. Warre going to have to keep an
eye on how those shippers do. They got a one
nothing edge if you want to count that race yesterday
as a shipper winning. That horse has been running at Woodbine.
And then the Stormy Liberal is also on Sunday, a
field to nine. What a great betting race. I looked
at that race can make a case for several I
(06:12):
can't wait to dig into that one later on tonight.
But what about today. We've got the Jimmy Duranty two
year old Phillies super Speed had a dreadful trip last time.
She is the seven to two morning line favorite. That's
a big, full field, should be very solid. We've got
the Seabiscuit going as race seven in a solid field,
(06:34):
and the Hollywood Derby. I believe Jay is going to
take race seven if I'm not correct there. I think
Jay will go over that one a little bit more detail.
And then we've got the Hollywood Derby, which is going
to be my radio race. Got a good price play
in there, and we are going to wrap up the
show with that. So two quick reminders for you before
we go down to Gulf Stream, they're going to kick
(06:56):
off the big meat down there. We're going to talk
a little bit about that turf course. It's a little
bit of a tricky turf course, and I want to
give you a couple of things to think about for
those Gulf Stream grass races. But two quick reminders. Folks
always check the Nira bets. If you don't have a
Nyrabet's account, you can open up a Nirabet's account new
(07:17):
account holders. You bet two hundred, they're going to give
you two hundred dollars back. But check the promotions today.
It's a hit and split if you're playing the late
pick five at Aqueduct or Woodbine, they're giving away ten
thousand bucks if you opt in and you will split
that with However many people hit if it's not a
short priced one, Heck, why couldn't you scoop the whole
(07:37):
ten thousand? So I think it's an incredible opportunity. Yesterday
they had a ten percent trifecta bonus here at Delmar
and I did opt in. I played one of them,
and I did not hit the trifecta in the race
that I played, But now I know Jason did that
a few weeks back. Ten percent bonus a very very
nice thing. But Nira bets. And here's another reminder. If
(07:57):
folks are having a party and you're going to the
Casino House Parties has come on board with us. If
you're having a party and you're planning on doing something
in December and January, if they are booking up quickly,
so do yourself a favor. Go to that website. If
this is something that you're interested in, Casinohouseparties dot Com
you can call two one three five hundred four zero
(08:19):
six three. And if you're going to have a Christmas
or New Year's party, you want to book it now
because they will fill up blackjack, crabs, roulette, poker, and
much more, come right to your house and they will
have professional dealers, professional equipment. They'll set it up, take
it away, and they will take good care of you.
At Casino Houseparties dot Com. Just like it sounds, spell
(08:43):
it out, just like it sounds. Anyway. The Gulf Stream
Turf Course, I just want to go over that because
that's really going to become the primary turf racing in
the country really starting next week, the week after the
Big Boys head down there, a lot of the New
York courses are going to shift down. And I think
there's three things that can really help you on that
Gulf Stream turf Course that I was thinking about that
(09:05):
you can do that you know, might be a little
bit of extra, especially the first one that we're going
to talk about, but the obvious base of handicapping things
do apply. I mean, pace is really really important in
all the races down there. It's a turf course where
the rail position often changes and you really need to
(09:25):
check and see what the rail position is. It's not
the same as it was since they've added a synthetic
track in between. It's made it a little bit different.
It's not as wide a course as it once was.
So the rail position, though, is still variable, and it's
still very important when that rail is at zero. Saving
ground on the inside I think is super super important
(09:46):
if you can get positioned depending on the distance. They
run a mile race where it's a short run to
the first turn, and I think the inside horses have
an advantage there. But when the rails are way out,
if you don't get the lead from the indie, you're
going to be in a miserable spot. And it's amazing
how many outside horses win there, and that outside trip
to me twelve, eleven, ten and nine. A lot of
(10:10):
those big outside numbers which we don't see here unless
we have the rails out like we had yesterday. We
don't see that very often here. We see an advantage
to the inside horses when the rails are at zero
or ten or whatever they might be at here. But
when those rails are way out there very very difficult
to get a trip from the inside, and of course
(10:30):
if you can get the lead that is, it's a
very good thing. A lot of horses have trouble there.
I would recommend having some sort of a stable mail
if you're playing down there on a regular basis. It's
certainly something that I use where these horses get bad
trips and you can come back and play them back again.
I mean, they've been stable mail has been available for years.
(10:51):
For those of you that don't have that, go to
DRF dot com and you can open up your stable
mail and they will send you a notice when those
horses are running back. I think that's very and I
want to point out three jocks down there that I
think are really terrific on the turf course there, and
then two of them will be there for sure. I'm
so high on the third one. I'm not even sure
(11:12):
that he's going to be there. But Paco Lopez is
absolutely an incredible rider. He's as good a rider to
bet as there is in the country. He always seems
to be on price horses. Even though he's one of
the leading jocks, he just doesn't seem to get followed
as much. And he's a guy that I think rides
a turf course absolutely terrific. Drayden van Dyke is another
(11:33):
one that I would look at a lot of confidence
coming from him. We went on a really good run
down there at Gaulf Stream and he's always been a
decent turf rider, and especially when the rails are out.
Drayden really knew how to ride this turf course here
when those rails were out, coming outside and timing that
correctly rather than trying to go inside and getting stopped
when those rails are way out, and I think that's
(11:54):
really important for there. So I think Drayden is going
to do well and again he's got his confidence back.
And if I've seen Murphy comes back, it was almost
unfair watching him ride. He was like a man against boys.
This guy is one of the world's best riders and
I just don't know if he's going to come back,
but I think he's worth watching. If he does come back,
I'm going to go to race number eleven. We're gonna
(12:17):
give you a little bonus race. Race number eleven is
an optional claimer here at twenty five thousand dollars, and
they are going a mile of sixteenth on the turf course.
In the checking the rail positions, the first thing I
do in a field of ten, it's the rails are
at seventeen. So inside of a mile of sixteenth is
not a bad spot to be. And I like number
one in here, a horse named Blitz who gets one
(12:39):
of my riders in here in Drayden van Dyke, also
a very good longtime trainer, Mark Cassie, a guy that's
done extremely well over the years. And this is a
horse that's coming off of a pretty lengthy layoff. In fact,
this is a three year old coming off over a
year layoff. This is almost like it Alan Benowick's man,
a first time four year old angle again with a
(13:01):
good looking string of works. But here's what I like
most about this horse. This horse has got some pedigree.
I like the bottom side of the pedigree. And here
a horse named Customer Base. Is the damn the damn
of this one. Customer Base actually was a mayor that
ran around these parts, and she's a fairly young mayor.
She hasn't thrown that many and I like that. I
don't like it when these mayors have thrown seven or
(13:23):
eight or nine runners, they really seem to go downwards.
So this is one of her first offspring, and again
she ran really nicely on the turf. This one had
a much much better than looked race first time out,
after breaking very slowly from the rail. Often happens that
first race at Ellis. I don't really know what happened.
Got in a little bit of trouble and just didn't
run her best in that Woodbine race, and they came
(13:45):
back with a win at a mile and of sixteenth,
showing this horse could run longer. But I like that
first turf race. And this horse is a big price.
There's some very vulnerable looking favorites in here, the top two.
And here Lady Mary. She's lost a bunch of races
in a row. She's lost eight straight. Let's get first
lay six jack sisterson trains. This one looks vulnerable to me.
(14:05):
I think we can beat this one. And then New
Gumea is another one that was a second race off
of a long layoff or first race off of a
very long layoff over a year layoff wasn't very good
and five to two seems like a pretty short price
on her. I think Blitz has a good chance here
to upset coming off of this kind of a layoff.
Not a bad horse to look at on the track.
(14:25):
See what she looks like that. I think Blitz has
an upset look there. And race number eleven at Gulf Stream,
number one Blitz. I'm going to bet this one to
win in place. I didn't have much of a clue
with any anybody else, so let's make a winning place
bet here on number one Blitz in race eleven out
at Gulf Stream. Weather should be good there, it's going
to be good back east, and obviously it's great here
(14:48):
and we want to bring Jay Friedlander aboard. Jay Jay
having a nice week with double jab one hundred and
forty three dollars Try Keys one hundred and forty three dollars,
trying for Jay. It's missed Astor kicking off the Turf
festival at eleven dollars and sixty cents. King of Dragons
was a nice twenty dollars and forty cent winner for J,
which capped off a very nice three hundred and thirty
(15:11):
dollars pick for J. Welcome to the show.
Speaker 7 (15:15):
Good morning, Steve. What time is it? Gee, I'm never
up this early.
Speaker 6 (15:24):
Well it's eight fifteen.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
You know.
Speaker 6 (15:26):
Bruno's a new kid on the block. But he seems
to get he seems to get first choice.
Speaker 7 (15:32):
That's fine. I get to go to the gym early
this morning, so works out well. So Bruno is welcome
to my later slot today. But yeah, Steve, Yeah, it's
an interesting pick that Gulfstream card. You've got a lot
of younger horses, you know, trying some things today, and
the stakes races down there, the new Florida Sire Series,
(15:54):
and yeah, a good stude pointing out about, you know,
the way the courses play, because our fans are going
to need to know that information going forward.
Speaker 6 (16:04):
They will Jay you and I are going to talk
about a couple of races here. We're going to go
over your two radio races afterward. But I did want
to talk to you a little bit about the Great
Three Commonly, which is a state race being run at
Aqueduct today, and this is a race at a mile
(16:25):
and an eighth. These are three year old, sort of
at the end of their season. I want to get
your take on this race. First, a real solid field
of seven again going the distance of a mile, and
the eighth at Aqueduct. Take it away, Jay if you will.
Speaker 7 (16:40):
Well sure the heavy favorite here at seven to five
is number three Alpine Princess and not a surprise, brad
Cox will be one of the dominant trainers, especially in
the winter when most of the big Barnes have deserted
and headed down to Gulfstream. And this one comes off
a huge race in the Rummington Park Oaks just press
the pay and drew off by nine and three quarters.
(17:02):
So certainly the sharpest Philly in the race by far.
And you don't get Floren Gerou but Manny Franco holding
down the ford in New York. He's going to make
a lot of money this winter while everybody's down at
Gulf Stream. And he clicks with brad Cox for thirty
nine percent, so certainly a deserving favorite here. Now the
hole in the armor is she has not really performed yet,
(17:26):
you know ingraded competition. Last time out in the Rachel
Alexandra pressed the pace for a while but couldn't hold
it late and finished midpack under Florenderou And so there
are some horses that have been proven in classier competition
that certainly deserve a look. Number one Pretty Anna, certainly,
(17:47):
and the Mother Goose closed really nicely when way back
under Dylan Davis, who's out here this morning to ride
in the Turf Festival and just missed winning a Grade
two by a neck. And then Todd Pletcher's got a
couple on the bottom that I'm using. Audacious is pretty fast.
Scalable has been running against some really classy competition and
split the field in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Philly, so
(18:10):
Scalable certainly has a shot here. The two I'm not using,
but you can make a case. Number two Dorothy's Dreams,
who is a little bit behind the others in terms
of the class that she's run against, and just life Talk,
who's actually four to one. I wouldn't criticize anybody that
used life Talk on their ticket, but the last three
(18:30):
have been a little slower this year compared to last year,
so I'm not sure that she is quite as good
a three year old as she was a four year old.
But if you throw life Talk on your ticket. You
won't get an argument for me.
Speaker 6 (18:43):
Yeah, it's hard for me to disagree with you that
Alpine Princess is going to be tough. Another horse that
you did mention, the horse that I was a little
bit interested in, that he seems on the improves, a
little bit slower, but definitely getting better. And that's audacious.
The six horse. This is her third time. I'm going
long and she did go a mile on an eighth
last time and gave it up a little bit late.
(19:05):
But I think she's tactical in this race. And I'll
tell you what on prison at EP, I don't see
a whole lot of early speed. Speed was very good
there yesterday winning you know, the outright leader won five
out of the nine races. And I tell you, for
those of us, especially here on the West Coast, if
you're like me, you know, I actually do turn them
on early, but I'm mostly playing the later races. And
(19:27):
if you want to turn the races on the seventh,
eighth or what have you, go to Equabase and look
at the PPS for the early races and just do
a little chart for yourself where have the winner's been
coming from? Because some of the days you're going to
see six races, and you're going to see six races
that are won by speed horses. Some of the days
they're all loop into the outside, and I just think
(19:48):
it's a really big advantage if you want to play
this race or maybe the last few races like I do.
I really like to Jay, I just like to get
a feel for the racetrack because I think Aqueduct really
it's a track that you know, they definitely have some
bad weather there, and I think that there are some
biases there that are tremendous and if you can pick
up on it and play with the bias, you're going
(20:10):
to have a big advantage there. It's just something that
I would recommend the folks to do, especially if you're
going to look at this as commonly but maybe not
a great race, JA, maybe a race to keep an
eye on, because I think both of us agree that
it could be a tough seven to five favorite in here,
and I think those races are maybe worth staying at of.
But you picked two races that you think we could
(20:32):
possibly take advantage of today, and let's take a look
at those races. J. We're going to go down to
golf Stream and we are going to play here at
home at del Mar. Which one would you like to
go to?
Speaker 8 (20:43):
First?
Speaker 7 (20:44):
Let's start with golf Stream, and I want to mention
Mike card still, says Belmont. This week we are I
am splitting the New York and Goldstream races for this
week and one more week till through the Cigar Mile.
So what you get is four races, the last four
from Aqueduct with pick four and the last six races
from Gulf Stream, including the late pick four, the late
(21:04):
pick five, and I even threw in the rainbow pick
six because I think it's hit able. And no, you're
probably not gonna get the only ticket that wins and
get the whole jackpot today. But my ticket sixty seven bucks,
and I think for that kind of money you can
grind out some nice profit. So anyway, there's some goodies
to be had on both cards. And of course great
(21:25):
Hollywood you know turf Festival card or turf Festival featuring
the Hollywood Derby today. And so let's go to golf
Stream and we're gonna go to RaSE nine Steve, and
it's a one hundred thousand dollars handicap and it would
probably be a namedstakes in a lot of tracks, but
we're in the Gulf Stream Championship Meet now, and the
one that your eye is drawn to is number one,
(21:47):
Fly the W, and Fly the W has just been
a monster on Tipeeda and this one is fourteen for
twenty nine with four seconds and seven thirds all on
to Peter All on this Topeda course. This one doesn't
like to travel much. And yet despite what looks like
a guaranteed paycheck in here, because with that kind of record,
(22:09):
certainly looks like he's going to hit the board. Edgar
z Ayaz, who is one of the leading jocks down
there all year, but especially you know this time of year,
goes with Dripping Gold, who is the favorite here and
Dripping Gold has never run on the tapeda course but
has a big speed figure one hundred and four fig
three back and Chuck McGahee has managed to lure Zayas
(22:33):
away from his meal ticket.
Speaker 8 (22:35):
Up there Fly the W.
Speaker 7 (22:36):
But I'm going to try to beat them both. I'm
going to try to beat them both on the long shot.
And the one I like here is number six, Patriot
Spirit at twelve to one, and Patriot Spirit has really
been running against the classiest company in the field. This
is a multiple stakes winner over Tampa Bay Downs and
won the Illinois Derby and won that and the subsequent
(22:58):
optional climber in very fast time one hundred and three
one hundred and four bristwigs, So those are the two
fastest figs in the field. And then tried grated competition
again in the Perryville and actually pressed the pace and
did pretty nicely in the first part of the race,
and then got check laid and wasn't quite didn't quite
have the class to recover from that race. But now
is third off a layoff, also trying taped it for
(23:21):
the first time, and Michael Campbell the trainer, is great
third off the layoff thirty one percent wins. So liking
number six Patriots Spirit with a nice chance at the
upset here at twelve to one.
Speaker 6 (23:34):
All right, Jay, how are you going to play this one.
Speaker 8 (23:38):
Let's look at a.
Speaker 7 (23:39):
Trifecta here, and we're going to use the two I mentioned.
We'll use Fly the w and Driffing Gold. We'll play
three tickets. We'll use number six with number one, eight
with all, we'll play six with all with one eight,
and then we'll play a one six eight with one
six eight with all and hopefully we nail that twice
nice winning placement on Patriot Spirit.
Speaker 6 (23:59):
Yeah, Jay, you know, I don't spend as much time
generally with the synthetic races. There's just not my favorite
races to like. And I think a horse like Fly
the w could be tough in here.
Speaker 8 (24:11):
At three to one.
Speaker 6 (24:12):
But I'll tell you what I really like about your
Patriot Spirit. This one has a very nice early pace
edge in this race. I mean sure, this one's average
pace numbers on Bristine at EP is ninety five and
the next fastest number is no one's near ninety. This
one should get clear early. And the only race that
this horse has run with lasiks and blinkers, which this
(24:34):
horse will get today. This was a big runaway winner,
was one of those big figures there at Colonial where
the horse ran one hundred and four brist figure, which
is obviously one of this horse's best two races. And again,
Patriot Spirit, you're liking it on your angles. I can
see it from my thing. I think at twelve to one,
I think this is a very nice play today. So folks,
(24:55):
race nine, it's the sixth Patriot spirit. Jay, before we
head to the del Mar, you wanted to talk a
little bit about the winner, the rider, the jockey that
won the big race yesterday, a jockey named Vincent Chiminond.
I believe it's Chimmenad. What can you tell us about
this guy and Vincent Chiminad take it away, Jay.
Speaker 7 (25:20):
Yeah, this guy comes over from France, which was, of
course where Faby and Pratt and Julianne le Peroux and
Floren Geroux all came from and had a success like
many of these riding over there. For Andre Fobb in
fact won the French Derby while he was apprentice or yeah,
(25:40):
the French Derby on New Bay over there, and then
he came over here. And he also twenty fifteen he
got a mount on Flintshire in the Sword Dancer and
won that handle a Grade one in New York. This
is a really talented young guy. He's got a background
in jumps. He was a steeplechase jock when he started,
and he only knows how to move a horse. If
(26:01):
you watch the race yesterday, he started, you know, scrubbing
him early from behind, and it looked like he wasn't responding,
and then he just got him going and then he
moved up on the inside of the horse that was leading,
and normally that's a tough road to hoe. Normally it's
it's hard to pass inside a horse, if you've probably
noticed that. And yeah, Vincent Schomano did and h one
(26:24):
nicely at the end. I think this guy is going
to be a nice, you know, value here. He's been
teaming up with Jonathan Thomas, who was the trainer yesterday,
with truly quality and uh, they've got huge statistics together,
so Thomas is actually you'll give him some mounts. I
think our turf colony, Flaby and Pratt will be back.
But beyond that, it's kind of a scrum where you've
(26:47):
got some talented jocks like recently like Antonio for Zoo
uh and like Hector Barrios, and they're all very talented riders,
but there's room here. It's not quite as talented a
turf colony as far as depth as say the Gulf
Stream colony or the Midwest colony where Dreu is riding now,
So there's some opportunities here. Fans don't know him. Get
(27:09):
down early on Vincent Chemeno before fans catch on.
Speaker 6 (27:15):
They are we sure that he's going to be riding here?
Did you did you read that somewhere that this is
going to be a permanent spot for him or was
he just here for the turf festival or maybe for
you know, for this meet.
Speaker 7 (27:26):
No, I don't know that, And that's a good point.
I'm just saying that, get down on him while you
can if he winds up going down back to say,
you know, Gulf Stream or Fairgrounds, because I know his
where he first broke in. He first broke in at Fairgrounds,
and you know their winter meat has started. But the
purses there are not quite as good as they are here,
(27:47):
so he may just be tempted. So but yes, excellent
point on that, Steve. Just take advantage while you can, I.
Speaker 6 (27:55):
Hear you, all right, Well, I did like the ride yesterday.
That was certainly a good quality ride. Showed me that
with the rail at twenty four that he could get
the job done. He really got his way around there
in a nice way. And it's definitely okay folks to
come wide when that rail is out, because you're going
to go inside like the horse. I like the horse
named Divine Propo, and you get stop cold and then
(28:17):
you don't even know whether you and that was with
Umberto risp Eli and he's you know, in my opinion,
he's the top two turf rider here, maybe top three,
you know, if you want to give Hernandez a bone,
because I think he rides his turf course very well.
All right, Ja, The rails back at zero today, so
we've got the position that I like the most because
I just feel like it gives horses that save ground
(28:40):
more of an advantage than it does when those rails
are out like it was yesterday. The rails are at zero,
and I believe Jay that you wanted to talk about
race seven.
Speaker 7 (28:48):
Yeah, let's talk about the sea biscuits here. And the
favorite here is number seven Redistricting, one of the Chad
Brown fleet of runners that he shipped over. I mean,
when you're chartering a plane out here as well, send
a lot of runners. And he's got a lot of
runners going in other races like the Matriarch tomorrow. But
Redistricting is the favorite here and certainly, you know, looking
(29:10):
at his past history, ran at belmonted Aqueduct and the
Knickerbocker very impressive second, almost getting the job. Doneder Manny
Franco and Flavian is certainly an upgrade over that guy
as good as Manny Franco is. But Flavian tried his
luck in the Belmont Derby and the best he could
come up with is a seventh place finish. Now, yeah,
that was Grade one horses in New York and this
(29:32):
is a tougher field, so certainly this represents a class
drop for districting over most of what he's faced in
the past. He did not really take to this course
in the Hollywood Derby, but had some injury problems last
year and was pulled up and needed quite a long
break come back from that, so it's hard to really
hold that against him. Nevertheless, we'll try to beat him
(29:54):
with a horse we know does well here and that's
right below number eight Easter. Easter has been running into
this buzzsaw called Johannes, who will be one of the
finalists for the Best her Force, and certainly Easter before
that had a very impressive run, including winning this race
last year. He is the defending champion of the Sea
Biscuit and earned his best speed figure one hundred speed
(30:17):
figure under Antonio for Zoo and normally fans have gotten
wise to Antonio for Zoo. It's not like he's a
unknown like Vincent Chemena anymore. You really have a hard
time getting a price on Antonio anymore. But you get
one today. It's a very tough field easts eight to one,
and I like his chances to repeat now that he's
finally away from Johannes.
Speaker 6 (30:38):
Day. Where are we going to go for exotics in
this race?
Speaker 7 (30:42):
Easy exotic race, Steve. It's a very deep race, and
you've got a price on top. I'm gonna wheel this
one dollar exact eight with all and all with eight
and a nice win bet. And if the price holds up,
and I think it will on a deep field like this,
nice place bet on number eight. Easter Jay.
Speaker 6 (31:00):
The one thing that you definitely have in here for Easter.
When you have the eight hole and you're coming out
of the shoot, what you want, Jay is a horse
like fast Buck in the race. I don't know why
they're trying fast Buck at a longer distance. To me,
this horse should have stuck with the five for a
long distance. They've been switching around a lot. But when
you have an outside horse coming out of that shot
(31:21):
in the eight, nine, ten to eleven, hole. It is
really an advantage. And there's a twelve horse in here,
but it's really an advantage for them when you have
a horse like fast Buck and then you have some
pretty fast chasers like Astronomer to the inside. Because one
of the things that Easter is going to need to
do is get over a little bit, and I think
this is a good distance for him. I know this
(31:43):
horse has some good back races, and I just think
that the way that this race is going to flow
that I think a horse with his style is going
to have a good shot in here. So Easter eight
to one.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
Jay.
Speaker 8 (31:56):
How was Thanksgiving?
Speaker 7 (31:57):
By the way, Oh delicious. I had a nice Thanksgiving
dinner with some of my closest friends in the world.
And I didn't have to cook, I didn't have to
clean up. I just brought the ice cream.
Speaker 6 (32:12):
Well that sounds great, all right, Jay? Well listen, Jay,
thank you so so much for coming on, filling us
in on Vincent Chimenon and giving us a good selection
at del Mar and at Gulf Stream. Jay Friedlander bringing
it to you, Jay, you want to wrap up your segment.
Speaker 7 (32:32):
That's all I've got, Seeve, Just let's really enjoy that
tur festival, dig into that Matriarch tomorrow. That's gonna be
a very edable race with all those Chad Brown horses.
And just have a really nice weekend. This weekend, it's
the big closing for del Mar, So let's have some fun.
Speaker 6 (32:49):
Let's make some money, all right, Jay, sounds great, Jay
Friedlander bringing it to you with some nice selections. Come

love to see that. Jay Friedlander. You can get his

This is the Patriot Am eleven fifty.
Speaker 6 (36:26):
All right, we are back and we are back a
turf festival. Excited about the Hollywood Derby today, which is
going to be Race nine. That is going to be
my selection. But before we go to that, how about
this week from mister Bruno to Julio. Thursday at the
Fairgrounds five top Choice winners, golf Stream Park four top
(36:50):
Choice winners thirty percent winners at those tracks at Churchill Downs,
Fairgrounds and golf Stream. Bruno hit thirty percent of the
races on Thursday Friday, gall Stream six top Choice winners Fairgrounds,
four top Choice winners from nine races, Churchill three top
Choice winners from twelve races. Del Mar three for nine.
(37:12):
That's like Ted Williams sitting over four hundred very very
nice thirty eight percent clip for two days. Bruno, that
is a very nice day, a very nice two days
of handicapping. Welcome to the show, my friend.
Speaker 8 (37:26):
Hey, Thanks guys.
Speaker 5 (37:28):
Jay was good as always as you were Hey, talking
about the terrific Gulf Stream. The one thing you do
have to watch too, when the rails are all the
way down to zero, you'll get I think the timing
starts right when the gate opens and you get very
odd slow splits, but it doesn't pass the eye test.
(37:54):
You're watching those horses go and you're thinking, that's not
a fifty, that's more like a forty eight. And a
lot of the times handicappers spend too much time looking
at that top right hand corner for the splits to
be able to make up their mind on what they're
seeing instead of using their eyes. And sometimes I watch races,
(38:15):
you know, it's funny. It's like watching Trevor. Sometimes Trevor
can can really tell you how the pace is setting up.
He's very good about that. And sometimes he'll go, they're
really going quick out there, and you look up and
it's a forty eight. That's been a product of the
run up, and the run up has always been an
issue at Gulf Stream, and it's because they move the
(38:38):
gate around so much. They have different points of when
the timing starts, and it makes it really hard on
the handicapper. You have to use your eyes rather than
have to look up. And also if you're looking at
that right hand corner for that split, you're not watching
the race.
Speaker 8 (38:57):
I like it.
Speaker 7 (38:58):
I like it.
Speaker 6 (38:58):
Tricky turf course, very very tricky turf course. Man oh man.
The five furlong horses that are down on the inside,
I don't care where that rail is. It is very
hard for them to get room. It's really different from
what we see at Delmar. At Delmar, I really handicapped
del Mar turf course inside out. In other words, that
the one in the two holes have a gigantic advantage.
(39:18):
If those horses can get positioned early, they're really in
a gary spot. It's almost impossible to get good position
from the inside. And that five furlong race at gulf Stream,
So they really are different turf courses all across the country.
Speaker 8 (39:33):
Fair ground is the same way.
Speaker 5 (39:34):
And the reason why is because when they come up
to the turn, if you're down in you If anybody
out there has ever ridden a motorcycle or a bicycle.
How do you handle going through a turn with a
bicycle or a motorcycle.
Speaker 6 (39:50):
You got to slow down and you got to swing.
Speaker 8 (39:53):
Why what else? What else do you do?
Speaker 5 (39:56):
You have to go out and then come down and
whip down into into into the turn. If you're down inside,
you can't move out and whip into the turn. So
you actually have you know, you have to steady your
way around the inside. I hate the inside of fairgrounds
and it's the same thing at Gulfstream. And it's all
because you get pressure from the outside and you can't
(40:17):
be able to cut the corner like you would if
there was nobody to your outside.
Speaker 10 (40:22):
Anybody on who's ever ridden a bicycle, and some of
us sold folks, you know, like me, hasn't ridden a
bicycle on a long time, you know, but I remember,
you know how cool it was to be able to
move off the inside and dive down onto the rail
to pick up acceleration.
Speaker 8 (40:38):
It's the same thing with horses, Bruno.
Speaker 6 (40:42):
I refuse to accept if you refuse to acknowledge the
fact that you're telling me I'm old, even though I've
known you now for almost forty years, which is scary
to me.
Speaker 8 (40:52):
Hey, I didn't call you an old fart, did I?
Speaker 9 (40:59):
I can.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
Y?
Speaker 8 (41:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (41:03):
Oh man, Okay, let's change the subject here really quickly. Bruno,
you gave me two races that you wanted to look at,
and it's interesting that we're going to talk about the
five and a half furlong race at the fair Grounds.
This is race eight, and folks, I want to give
you the post time of this race. It's two fifteen
hour time. It's two fifteen hour time, Brunal, Race eight
(41:25):
at the Fairgrounds. It's a little turf sprinting here. Again,
tell us a little bit more about that turf course
and your selection in there.
Speaker 5 (41:33):
Let me remind people that are listening from outside of
California that's four fifteen for fair Grounds time and five
to fifteen East Coast time. But there's two hour differences
with Fairgrounds, yes, sir, And there's a horse in here
that we gave a four star work too.
Speaker 8 (41:55):
And the beauty about getting our.
Speaker 5 (41:56):
Stuff are complete package through Jason site is you also
get the workout report which is attached to the back
of the cheat sheet with all the selections and the
program et cetera. So in within the within the product.
(42:19):
We not only have the workout report, but we also
embed our workout videos and if you've never seen our
workout videos, we have videos from Churchill, Sheenland turf Way,
and we also are adding Fairgrounds and I'm releasing this
as breaking news.
Speaker 8 (42:40):
We also will have Oakland this year, so.
Speaker 5 (42:46):
We will have so all those workout videos are embedded
within the product. So when you get the product, you
can click on the little red link and be able
to watch the work yourself. You can watch the work
for all I want.
Speaker 8 (42:58):
Is you the number twelve horse in the eighth race.
It depends that at.
Speaker 5 (43:06):
At five and a half at fair Grounds, and the
number twelve horses are really consistent.
Speaker 8 (43:10):
Philly.
Speaker 5 (43:11):
She runs hard every single time and this is a
kind of race she can win. She's got Jose Orts
on board. I'm hoping we get all.
Speaker 8 (43:19):
Of four to one, and I do like her ability
to get out of the eat.
Speaker 5 (43:24):
I'm not really usually a big outside boasts kind of
guy at the five and a half at Gulf Stream Fairgrounds,
even del Mar at short distances, but she should be
able to get a good position and be able to
get and there's some speed in here, so she will
She will be very tough in that spot.
Speaker 8 (43:46):
The twelve.
Speaker 5 (43:46):
All I want is you with Jose Rtz and Ignazio
Correas and the eighth race at Fairgrounds.
Speaker 8 (43:56):
Bernl.
Speaker 6 (43:56):
I've noticed one thing about fair Grounds over the years.
A lot of sand on that turf course and a
lot of kickback on a turf course, which is kind
of unusual anything in your handicapping do you factor that
in or is that not something that you factor into
your capping.
Speaker 5 (44:13):
The way I see Fairgrounds spread Grounds is a rather
flat surface with not much banking, so you have to
almost handle it like a turf turf race the way
they the way you horses trip out, it's almost like
running in a turf race. You have to have the
inside come up, the inside cover up, angle out. You
(44:35):
can't go four or five wide. It's not a track
you're gonna call a rally white type of track, you know,
because of the lack of the banking, and it's a
big track.
Speaker 8 (44:44):
That you really do on the main track.
Speaker 10 (44:47):
This is you have to.
Speaker 5 (44:50):
Really watch your post positions and the trip source.
Speaker 8 (44:54):
That gets on the turf.
Speaker 5 (44:56):
It's it's really a mixed bag. On the turf to
middle aisle, there's a middle lane. That seems to be
where horses come rallying down the middle of the track
and win. And that's been and that's been all the way,
that's been the history of fair grounds.
Speaker 8 (45:15):
In that turf course, you got to remember that fair grounds.
Speaker 5 (45:19):
In a bowl in New Orleans is in a bowl
where you got water all around. It's really marshland. And
when you have marshland, you really have a lot of moisture.
That's always it's always there. I remember during Katrina and
I think fair grounds flooded three four feet. A lot
(45:42):
of places flooded there in Katrina. But being in marshlands,
just like del Mar is in the middle of a
marshland or a riverbed, you're going to get moisture in
that track. You're going to get moisture in that.
Speaker 6 (45:54):
You know, I'm losing you here, You're going in and out,
brun Ard. Are you hearing me well? And can you can?
Can you hear Bruno?
Speaker 10 (46:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (46:02):
I hear you.
Speaker 8 (46:04):
I don't know why where you are?
Speaker 6 (46:05):
Okay, you're back. I'm sorry, Okay, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (46:08):
So you have to really watch the way the horses are,
where the horses are winning from. And I do that
with every track I really pay attention to get a
profile for the track, not a bias, a profile for
the track and go from there.
Speaker 8 (46:24):
What do we got next?
Speaker 6 (46:26):
Well, we got we're going to come to Churchill Downs
and we're going to go to race eleven. And again
the post time on this one, our time, folks, is
two forty eight. This is Race eleven. Bruno, I thought
Jonathan's Way, who's back in this one? This was a
horse that I thought had a good shot in the
Breeders stuff. He didn't really run his best race. Was
(46:49):
there anything you saw with him that made you think
he wasn't going to run? Because I know you had
the California winner of that race. Will that one bounce
back today? And if not, who is it that you'd
like in that rinks?
Speaker 5 (47:01):
Well, Jonathan's Way we highlighted in the Breeders Cup product
that we thought he was one dimensional. There was a
work before the Breeders Cup where he started with his
workmate and there was a Brendan Walsh team at front
of him and he had no patience. He had to
(47:21):
go right after the wash team and then he got
to the lead and he relaxed. That tells me a
lot about his mental mindset on what he.
Speaker 8 (47:29):
Wants to do.
Speaker 5 (47:30):
He wants to be on the lead. He went to
go to the lead and and that's his running stunt.
So I didn't like him at all in the Breeders Cup,
and he ran exactly. He didn't get the lead and
he was done. So it's it's with him. If he
gets the lead, he's going to be really tough. I
(47:52):
like the one He's not joking Josie Carroll coming in
from Woodbine. If you've watched Churchill at all, you used
to believe Churchill was an inside speed type of profile track.
Well in the last year it has really turned around.
It's really been horses that can come four or five
wide and that middle lane on the stretch is the
(48:13):
place to go. Now, what happened was they added a
lot of material to the track. They made it a
lot looser and a lot a lot slower and not
as speed as speed conducive as it used to be.
So I'm looking at a horse like He's not joking
(48:34):
that can come from off the bays rally wide, and
I like the Florence Jerujo getting on board. We're getting
eight to one. Jonathan's way is going to be tough.
He's going to get his lead. He's going to get
the lead. And you can go back and really see
what my point is. He worked Jonathan's Way on November
sixteenth behind Too Sharp and speedy Traveler, too Sharp one
(48:57):
to Chiluki last weekend, and he's a really fast Philly
and they put Jonathan's Way behind horses, which tells you
that what I've seen and what I have analyzed with
Jonathan's Way is what the trainer's see in as well.
They wanted to put them behind horses to get him dirt,
to get him used to it and get him the rally,
(49:19):
and he would not go up inside. And you can
see it for yourself. You can go look at the
video right on the product and you can see for himself.
He's got a lane on the inside to go through
and he won't go through it. And so that's something
that I've noticed about Jonathan's Way is his inability to
be able to handle kickback and possibly being able to
(49:40):
handle passing horses if he doesn't get the lead.
Speaker 6 (49:45):
That's a big boy. That is very very good information
and I kind of wish I used that on that
Breeder's Cup Friday but did not so excellent choice is Bruno,
Thank you so so much. Anything else you want to add,
We got a couple extra minutes if you want to
add anything.
Speaker 5 (50:03):
You guys, you guys doing a good job. You know,
we're looking forward to getting Jason back, you.
Speaker 8 (50:08):
Know, say feris never mind, everybody got.
Speaker 6 (50:16):
Oh goodness, folks, if you only got to know Bruno
de Julia the way I have this is one of
the true characters at the racetrack. Bruno, it's an absolute
privilege to have you on the show with us. Thank
you so so much. Have yourself a great, great day
out there. You and I are going to still talk
about getting this dinner together in the next in the
next couple of weeks, hopefully we can do that. And
(50:38):
thanks again, my friend.
Speaker 8 (50:39):
Have a great day.
Speaker 5 (50:41):
Hey, you guys have a great one, and everybody out
there enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend.
Speaker 6 (50:48):
All right. Bruno de Julio bringing it to you as
only he could. Uh boy, oh boy. That information like
that on a horse like Jonathan's way invaluable. And it
was a horse I had a lot of confidence on,
and and was a horse that Bruno just was was
tossing for for different reasons than I did. What I
(51:08):
saw and his two races was was not indicative of
what he was going to do. What he saw was better,
and obviously he had the winner of that race, So
congratulations to him on that. And again Bruno de Julia
bringing it to you.
Speaker 8 (51:22):
Okay, we've got.
Speaker 6 (51:23):
Nine minutes left. We're going to go to the Hollywood Derby,
which is race nine out at Delmar, And you know,
one of the things I noticed about the Fall Meeting
maybe the difference, maybe maybe the difference between the Fall
Meet and the Summer Meat, is the quality of the
(51:44):
dirt racing. We're really we're really short on horses, and
I don't know what we're going to do going forward.
I'm looking really forward to these next two cards because
we've really got some good racing. But boy, when when
I see, you know, what we got every other race,
it's it's real hard to come up with the selection
in one of these dirt races that you like. Maybe
the first week or so we had some more full
(52:07):
fields and then that's just an issue that we're going
to have to face going forward. But today we've got
some great grass racing. We've got four or five really
really nice grass races, and we're going to talk to
you about this Hollywood Derby at a mile and eight.
You know, one of the things Jay was talking about
earlier was the dominance of the west of the East
Coast horses coming here. And in this race, there's a
(52:31):
couple of horses. Donegal momentum is in this one shipping.
There's a horse name Terror Patty that's shipping from Woodbine
and we certainly had a you know, Woodbine winter yesterday.
Speaker 8 (52:43):
You want to take a look at those.
Speaker 6 (52:45):
What I saw with the three year olds this summer
at at Saratoga and Belmont and Aqueduct was that they
weren't quite as good. Now, you can't knock this Donegal momentum.
I'm going to use this horse. It looks like a
horse that's going to be that's going to be forwardly placed.
I do think there is some speed in this race
with this chattelas the three horse, I think is going
(53:08):
to show some speed. The Donegal momentum, very nice pedigree
on this horse, and certainly at six to one is
certainly a horse to consider. Also, this Tua Patty is
another horse coming from Woodbine that that puts some very
fast fractions in with Vincent Cheminad and Jonathan Thomas, the
winners of yesterday's the Big race. And you know, maybe
(53:30):
this horse gets out there and gets on the leaf,
but I am going to go with a local horse
in this race. And the horse that I really like
is the one horse in here, stay Hot. Coming out
of the shoot at a mile of an eighth. It
is an advantage. You don't see it yesterday. You just
don't see it when those rails are out that these
inside horses have an advantage, but they certainly have an advantage.
Stay Hot going to be able to save some ground.
(53:52):
I really liked this one's progression. The last three or
four races here in southern California had the one hiccup
shipping back east against trickery. Formidable Man did run second
in that race, but this one came back against these horses,
was able to beat some of these in La La
Joya with a nice win. Making a run out in
the middle of the track. Was very, very impressive on
(54:14):
tape in that race. And then I thought Formidable Man
got the jump on this one. In the Delmark Derby,
I thought that was a good effort there as well.
And then in the last two races. If you look
at the fractions, fifty half in the del Mar, Derby
certainly slower, maybe by a tick or two than what
they normally run in a mile and an eight fifty
isn't out of the question going a mile and and
(54:36):
h the del Mar. But you know, I think forty nine,
maybe forty eight and high change will be the average there,
so a slow pace there, and again the pace had
scratched out in the morning of that race, and then
last time out again forty nine and two another race
maybe a tick slower or maybe even maybe even two
ticks slower early than what they normally get. I really
(54:57):
think this guy is in good form. Eight to one
is a nice price going to get a good trip.
Today's hope that there's some speed in this race. I
like the exotics in this race. I think the two
rothschild with a nice effort here at Delmar losing effort
four races back, and I think this one could go
forward today. Did run against some of these horses last time,
but the switch to Faby and Pratt and seeing fifteen
(55:18):
to one the four horse Carsons run, this might be
the best of the East Coast horses. This is the
Clement Christopher Clemon horse. I know he's not done great
with the shippers out here, and again I did not
think those East Coast horses were as good as they
normally are. But this is certainly one I'm going to use.
Formidable Man, the six horse. I think this one has
(55:40):
to be used again. This one got the jump on
Stay Hot and did go wide in that race. That
was a pretty dog gone impressive effort. The time wasn't
super fast, but this guy was never saw the rail
again in that Delmar Derby and went wide all the
way around and was able to fend off Stay Hot.
I think this one has to be used. Who we're
(56:00):
gonna use the aforementioned Donegal Momentum I think is a
horse that's gonna show speed in this race. And again
speed could be a good thing. There's not a ton
of it, maybe just average really is going to depend
on and perhaps with the long shot that the three
horse chapel list does. But it's the one horse Stay
Hot for me. I'm gonna play a win bet on
(56:21):
this one at eight to one, and then we're gonna
play you know, look at the four exactors in there
with the two roth Child, the four Carsons run the
sixth Formidable Man and the seven Donegal momentum, and then
we'll play the trifecta in here, keying the one first
and second. It's twelve dollars a copy playing the one
(56:41):
over the two four sixty seven over the two four
sixty seven. That will cost you twelve dollars. And then
we're gonna come back and we're gonna play two four
six seven with the one with the two four six seven.
Those are a couple twelve dollars. Try and stay hot.
Speaker 8 (56:59):
Let's hope that we can do just that.
Speaker 6 (57:02):
I was stay hot in the ninth race out at
Delmark today, all right. I wanted to wrap up the
show with a quick little story. Gosh, it's getting to
be about thirty years ago. I was in Vegas about
thirty years ago, going through the casino, and I don't
remember where I was staying, but I do specifically remember.
(57:23):
It was that I wanted to play poker at Bally's.
And I walked into the Bally's casino and was heading
toward the poker room, and I saw a mass amount
of excitement around the roulette table. And I mean usually
the roulette table is fairly dead. It is what it is.
But there was a lot of excitement going on at
(57:45):
the roulette table, and I as I walked by it,
I noticed that there was a young man in his
early twenties and he was really screaming and yelling. Looked
like he was a guy that had a little bit
too much to drink, be honest with you, And he
had four or five older women at the table that
were really getting enthusiastic with him because he was yelling
(58:09):
and screaming that there was a magnet on the number
thirty one, and that anybody that put any chip anywhere
else was crazy that there was a magnet. And obviously
this guy needed his brain check because we know there's
no magnet on thirty one black. But the bottom line
is is that I came up and there was a
lot of people around this table, and I said, what
is all the craziness in thissteria about? And the guy
(58:32):
said to me that this guy had been sitting at
the table for four or five minutes and thirty one
black had come up three times in the last six spins,
with which the chances of that are like a million
to one. That this could happen anyway. Bottom line is
as I stood there for one spin and the ball
landed in the thirty one and the table went absolutely
(58:53):
nuts and crazy as I'm watching these people on quarter
roulette literally win hundreds of dollars, which doesn't generally happen.
But this gentleman had really manifested positivity. And that's what
you got to do in this game. Be positive today.
Tell yourself you're going to do well. There's some great
racing out there at Delmark today, but tell yourself keep
those positive thoughts. I'm going to do it today. I'm
(59:16):
going to organize myself. I'm going to figure out how
I'm going to play this and today is going to
be a good day for me. All Right.
Speaker 8 (59:22):
That's it for us.
