inside racing. Full hour of coverage on everything going on
in the sport of kings here in southern California and
around the country. And here's your host, Jason Levine.

Speaker 6 (03:41):
Yeah, yeah, I am Jason Levine. It's his inside Racing.
Happy to be with you. Good Saturday morning. I hope
everybody is doing well here in mid December. Yeah, oh man,
where are we at? Year in horse racing, kind of

(04:03):
a little bit of downtime, but some excitement about what's
coming barns horses, turn three, four, etc. Cycle continues every
year and that's kind of where we're at right now.
We've got the last two year old race, a big
one of the year, the os al Amido's Futurity happening
today here in southern California. The rest of the country,

(04:26):
you know, they're racing. Everybody's racing. Oakland, Gulf Stream, Tampa
Bay fair Grounds happening, Aqueduct huge, that's this time of year.
That's normal. That's where we're at. A reminder that we
are a little bit less than two weeks away opening
day at San Anita December twenty six, day after Christmas,

(04:51):
Boxing Day. For those of you that have been in
the UK, it's where you take the gift you didn't
want to bring it to a party and give it
somebody else in the middle and they get it's pretty
cool tradition, kind of funny. But the opening day sant
Anita looks like with what's happening around the country, everybody

(05:13):
looking like they want to come out to Southern California
running some of these big races. It's going to be
a great day, really really fun day. Really looking forward
to the opening day. San Anita obviously be running out
the grass again, and Mystic Dan maybe out here, a
bunch of shippers coming out and it's just going to

(05:33):
be a lot of fun. So that's a Thursday, and
we will be on the air two days later on
the twenty eighth of December to talk about that and
talk about the good Saturday card that they're going to
have out at the Great Race Place. So that's all
coming up. As far as next week, we will have

(05:54):
a show next week, are going to be on the air.
There's no racing here in Southern Californy, there is racing
around the country. I'm going to have I think a
couple of special things on the show next week, trying
to line some stuff up the something a little different.
We'll see, but we will be on the air then
right again on the twenty eighth, So that's the info

(06:16):
on that. What else we got, well, because it's a
little bit of downtime, just a couple regular sports notes
before we get into the racing. Where's Lebron? Lebron is funny?
I got to give Lebron James credit.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
He is.

Speaker 6 (06:33):
He's a unique athlete. His personality, his need to be
in the spotlight, his need to be the focus of everything.
He's kind of kidnapped the lake or franchise for whatever
it is now four or five years and the deal
with JJ Reddick getting him to be the coach doing
that podcast, bringing him in and he's just doing his

(06:54):
same Lebron stuff to JJ that he did to every
other coach he ended up getting fired. I think JJ
it's just kind of shaking his head now, like, you know,
be careful what you wish for. I love the excused absence.
Where's Lebron? I don't know when's he coming back. I
don't know to think of another athlete that would even

(07:16):
try to pull that off. It does it pretty regularly
by Germany. Is he going to see the Lebron defeat?
He's done that, who knows, But it is interesting to
be in LA and watch, well watching play offense. Doesn't
play defense, gave that up a few years ago, doesn't

(07:37):
even try. Which is if you don't think the teammates
are affected by that, you've never played on the team.
The guy who's supposed to be the team leader that
lacks and you have to pick up for him all
the time. That gets old real fast. So anyway, interesting
to watch that op opera going on over there. It's

(08:03):
wild leron fans. Then there's Laker fans, and I don't
know how many of the lebron fans are left.

Speaker 10 (08:11):
But.

Speaker 6 (08:13):
It'll be interesting until he's gone. That's that's the way
he has to have it. So as a sports fan
and someone who covered the NBA for a long long time,
I just find it just fascinating to see how things
are playing out there with the Lakers. What else, Yeah,
there's other stuff to talk about. Well we'll leave that alone.

(08:34):
Just I don't know. I just think it's hilarious. He
was such a great player. He's still good. But don't
be fooled by statistics. Let's put it that way, all right,
What do we get today? Well, first off, I have
to say I was gone for a couple of weeks,
came back and hey, I gave out a winner. And

(08:56):
this is a fun horse. Two poster who won last
week for Owen hardy the Remsen going on mile and
eighth coming off those two turfs, going two turns, trained
by Owen Hardy Man who was kind of at the
center of my book twenty four years ago and still

(09:19):
doing well and may have a chance to win the
Derby for Godolphin. What that was the focus of the book.
They still haven't won it. It would be pretty ironic
if Owen was the trainer to win it for them,
considering everything that's going on. But the poster very impressive.
Swabi and Pratt the best jockey in the United States
proving it every time he gets an opportunity to do so.

(09:42):
He is at the top of his game right now.
Every move he makes is the right one, He times
everything perfectly. He finishes just amazing. And to get nine
to two on that horse was a gift. Eleven sixty.
I hope of you were on that worked out very
very well for me. One of the things you need

(10:06):
to focus on is if you like a horse, you
know play around that horse, right, play doubles with him,
play pick three with him. If you're right about that
one horse and you single and it's a horse, it's
nine to two something like that, you're gonna get paid.
You're gonna do quite well. And that was a great
It's a great day for me to watch that play out.

(10:29):
You didn't win by much, he had to hang on
the other horse, had a tough trip, but really really
nice to see the money roll in in the next
two races after Poster did what he needed to do.
So fun to come back and do that and be right.
That's the fun part of the game. We're wrong a lot,

(10:49):
that's the game, that's how it goes. But again, when
you're right, you want to make as much hay as
you can every single time that happens. So he's an
interesting horse to watch. Post believe they're going to keep
him in New York is what I reading to take
the New York route through the Wood Memorial Kentucky Derby,

(11:09):
or at least that is the plan. Plans, of course
can be adjusted, but really happy for Owen Hardy and
I did want to mention that Owen, as luck would
have it, was the trainer of a horse you probably
remember named well Armed. Armed ended up winning to Dubai
World Cup for the Castner's Windstar Farm. And there's a

(11:34):
I guessaid, a very very sad and kind of wonderful
story about well Armed because of the the death of
their daughter in a terrorist attack and Bali back in
two thousand and one and then Well Armed came along.
They kind of felt like their daughter's soul was tied
into Well Armed. And anyway, there's a new book out

(11:54):
about Well Armed. We had a few trainers. We started
in England up with Owen Hardy and Jay Hubdy, good
friend of the show, and he's we the best writer
horse racing writer. I mean's just a great writer. He
just happens to write about horse race that's awful. Lucky

(12:16):
to have him. He wrote the book and there's a
great section on Owen, who's had a very interesting life
and has a very interesting background. And I recommend if
you're interested in a good horse racing book to read
over the holidays, then pick up Well Armed. Pretty sure
the title of the book is well Armed, so you

(12:36):
can find it pretty easily. And Jay does his usual
brilliant job of laying out the story, digging into the
different aspects of the story and the kind of wild,
unique career of well Armed. It was really really a
nice racehorse and just a great story. And you learn

(12:56):
a lot about horses training, different training methods, a lot
about horses swimming. They did a lot of swimming with
well Armed. He spent a lot of time in the pool, rehabbing,
obviously worked, so a lot of really cool stuff in there.
It was fun to see, oh, and be written about,
and to be reading the book when his horse won
last week was also pretty cool. So some synergy there

(13:18):
and a good gift this holiday season. Like reading and
like reading about horses, and you like great writing. Those
three don't always go together, so there's that. So definitely
recommend that book. I forgotten about it, I have to say,
so many horses go by over the years, But then

(13:41):
reading about it, thinking about it, I was like, oh, yeah,
I remember won a lot of big races in southern California,
and indeed he did in the synthetic era. Speaking of which,
the losal Futurity today at Los Alamos, of course run
on the dirt excuse me, used to be the Hollywood futurity. Also,
the Cash Call Futurity, and my birthday is around this
time of year, and it was always fun to go

(14:04):
to the Hollywood Futurity at night at Hollywood Park were
late in the day anyway, it was cold. It was
just fun to be out there. My dad used to
come out his birthdays right before mine or was and
he'd come out and we'd celebrate, and there was kind
of a tradition to go see the Futurity and hopefully
see a horse that makes no noise on the Triple

(14:26):
Crown Trail, and many did so it was nice to
be to remember those races. A lot of those races
had pretty full fields. Hollywood Futurity was a big deal,
a billion dollar race, I think. Anyway, some good memories.
Not the same at Los Alamidos for a lot of reasons,
but that's the story of the game. That's kind of

(14:49):
how things have gone over the years and today kind
of a good example. We've discussed this a lot on
the show, but Bob Baffort has the majority of the
talented two year old in southern California are in his barn.
It's just the way things have gone, for better or worse.
I think it's unbelievably for worse in so many different ways,

(15:10):
for Southern California, for the game in general. But it
is what is right now. And as an example, he
has three of the five runners in the Losalle Futurity today.
The race is only worth two hundred thousand dollars now,
it's a Grade two that feels about right. And we
have the second and fourth place finishers from the Breeders
Cup Benning Baffert number one. Gaming ran second all the

(15:33):
way around the track behind Citizen Bull ran very well,
also won the Dell March Charity. He will be favored
here and Lobby and Pratt will be riding He wrote
him in the Dell Marching Charity. And get Away Car,
who was a little bit behind Gaming most of the
way around and just got nipped on the wire for third,
ended up running fourth. Je Hernandez has ridden him every

(15:56):
time and is on him again. Those two looks very
tough in here, and if one of the outsiders is
going to beat him, beat them, I think it would
be the outside horse. Journalism to five for training. Michael
McCarthy eight hundred and twenty five thousand dollars ran well
the first time out to be third and then stretched
out to a mile, and I think that's the key

(16:16):
for Journalism ran much better going a mile down at
del mar one, very nicely over another horse that's in
here called Rank. Journalism looks like a horse on the rise.
Does have to be two good Bob Bafforts. There is
a third in here, Mellencamp. He's a maiden. I don't
think he's going to be a huge factor. So I

(16:37):
guess that's the key is can Journalism or Rank? I
guess beat either Gaming or getaway Car. And that's the
case for a lot of these races these days. Is
Baffort has two, three, four of them, and you know
there's one or two horses that maybe can beat them,
and they have been beating him this year. But that's
that's the race. It goes to race eight at Los Alamidos.

(16:58):
The other big thing going on is the handicap. The
contest there today. There's always a good one and offer
seats to be NHC. Not a lot of players, so
it's a really good opportunity win play show exacta I
think trifecta in that contest, and it's a real money contest,

(17:19):
really good contest to play you do have to play
the Losal card. You know, there's not a ton of
really vettable races on the card. But again, like I said,
you find one race that you like, a horse that's
going to be four or five, six to one somewhere
in that range, and you play around that horse correctly,
that's your tournament. That's it, and you can win it

(17:43):
if you play that correctly. You know, hit the exact
et cetera. You know you can win the tournament. So
first post today, twelve thirty down at los Al. Whether
it's going to be fine, a little cool? I always say,
versus like that. And again race eight, the Low South Maturity.
I did see an interesting name pop up and said,

(18:04):
Steve is going to join us in just a second. Well,
I'll wait on that. I didn't want to mention that.
Around the country, Turfway Park today is doing something interesting.
They're calling it Synthetic Championship Day. They have four stakes races.
Obviously they're running synthetic there. One is kind of the
equivalent of the Distaff's a mile and the sixteenth for
older phillies and mayors. That's first followed by a sprint

(18:27):
for the Phillies and mayors going six furlongs. Then there's
a mile and sixteenth race for the older male horses,
and then a sprint. So those four stakes are right
in a row. I believe they begin right at the
end of the low South cart so right around four
four point thirty, those four turfway races come up. And
I mentioned them because they all have full fields eleven, twelve,

(18:49):
twelve and twelve. So as a player, that's fun. It's
fun to handicap. There are difficult races to handicap. Lot
of turf horses going synthetics, some synthetic force horses shipping
in from the places, so pretty interesting challenge there if
you're up for that. A couple of New York bread
steaks at Aqueduct It's Louisiana bread Steaks Day at Fairgrounds

(19:11):
and at Gulf Stream Park they have a couple stakes races,
the Tropical Park Derby and Oaks for three year olds
on the grass, and I know Bruno is going to
talk about one of those races. I thought both those
races were pretty good. But let's bring on our man,
Steve Pollock, see how he's doing, and I'm gonna throw
a curveball at him. Here. But I know he's ready
for it. Steve, good morning.

Speaker 8 (19:31):
I'm ready for the curveball.

Speaker 7 (19:33):
I love it.

Speaker 6 (19:36):
I was not a good curveball hitter. That was a
problem for me. But that was a long time ago.
You're ready for this. So in the PPS today at
Los al I was going through the card and looking
at everything, and then all of a sudden I saw
in race six, which is it's a maiden race to
year old Phillies. No big deal, but can I see

(20:00):
the four horse way six first time starter? Uh? And
the owner breeder is Perry Martin. Perry Martin. Why do
I know Perry? Oh, Perry Martin was one of the
co owners of here's the first part of the curveball.

Speaker 8 (20:17):
Come on, Steve, No, oh my goodness, I have no
doubt my owners. Is my very weak at this subject.
I know, I know, you know.

Speaker 6 (20:26):
That's that's okay. He was the well, they were both
a little crazy. He was one of the co owners
of California Chrome.

Speaker 7 (20:34):
Oh god, you know what.

Speaker 8 (20:35):
I honestly, that name came to mind. I don't know why,
but I was just all right. So he was a
co owner of He's got hopefully he's got another good
one here.

Speaker 6 (20:44):
Well, the interesting thing to me was he was My
memory of him was he was a guy that that
was pretty arrogant, or at least he came across that
way about breeding and that he you know, he was
the one that kind of came up with the breeding
for for Chrome. He knew what was going on and
he was going to be the guy and he was,

(21:04):
you know, this hot shot breeder, and he wasn't. He
was just a guy that got as lucky as anybody
ever has in the history of horse racing. But he's
hung in there. I mean that's a fact. You know.
The breeding of I mean, the breeding of California Chrome
was ridiculous and there's just nothing, absolutely less than nothing,
and you end up with a superstar. That's one of

(21:25):
the great things about the game. And he rode the wave.
I guess he didn't get along with the other owner
after a while. That happens. But the sire of this
horse is Fabersham, who I was not familiar with. But
he's a full brother of California Chrome and owned by
owned by Perry Martin, and he was at study here

(21:48):
in California. Did not do very well, And now I
believe he's in Louisiana going to be a stallion down there,
and he owned the dam as well. So this is
a full on homebread for this guy. And it was
just brought back some memories and one of the big memories.
And this is not a curd ball. If you can't
hit this one out of the park, we're going to
have a serious problem.

Speaker 10 (22:08):
Okay.

Speaker 6 (22:09):
One of my big memories of California Chrome was singling
him with you on Santa Anita Derby Day.

Speaker 8 (22:17):
Santa Anita Derby had a boy uh and we.

Speaker 6 (22:21):
Hit the pick sex for the seminar. Yes we did,
and that was he was the obvious single. I'll say
that we did have another one, but it was nice
to see him ron Palm and be able to have
kind of an easy bingo square in that sequence.

Speaker 8 (22:40):
Well, I remember the next leg we singleed to ron
Ellis Sprinter And remember that the first four or five
dirt races had been one wire to wire and you
looked at me at the top of the lane and
you said to me, every horse that's been clear like
this one has won Italy and he wants fun and
that was it.

Speaker 6 (22:58):
Yeah, that was a good one. That was a no
stress pick six, which is I don't know, it's hard
enough to hit him, but to have kind of a
no stressor was I think we ran one two three
in the last race we did.

Speaker 8 (23:11):
We went one two three down the hill and we
got I think we got the second best one that
came in. That was that was That was a lot
of fun. Yeah, those are memories that you that you
don't forget for sure, and you know, it's kind.

Speaker 6 (23:25):
Of cool to have. You know, one of the horses
be California Chrome, who was just you know, he actually
he won the Hollywood Futurity, but he was just getting
rolling at that point, and who knew he would go
on to do what he did as a cow bread
Just a beautiful horse, a fun horse, a horse that
loved the fans, and one of the most popular horses

(23:47):
in California in the last twenty five years. Without question.
I'd probably put him at number two behind Zaniata. I mean,
he inspired a lot of people. I really really loved
California Chrome.

Speaker 8 (23:59):
Absolutely was an amazing horse chase. And it's amazing how
we remember the negativity because I remember taking a big
stand against that horse in the Kentucky Derby, which the
Rs came back and win. But I did love him
that day in the sant Anita Derby, and and probably
had him a few times after that. So but that was,
you know, that was one of our certainly one of

(24:20):
our better horses. And and I had a little relationship
for years with Art Sherman. Art Sherman was very very
good friends with a gentleman named Cy Goldstein who was
an owner for a long long time here in southern California,
and he had a box right next to mine, And
so I saw Art quite a bit well.

Speaker 6 (24:41):
A great guy, great sense of humor, unbelievable life story
on Art Sherman. And I think one of the main
reasons people loved California Chrome as much as they did
is because of Art Sherman. You know, you won't find
a more real guy. He was just straight up a

(25:01):
great guy. He understood the ride that he was on
because of the history he had with horses and how
lucky he was. Losal was the home base. We had
him on the show. We had a son, Steve, on
the show. I just think, you know what, just proof that,
you know. I don't mean to dismiss him, but anybody

(25:23):
can train a great horse. And he knew that, you know,
great horses trained themselves, you just kind of got to
get out of the way, figure him out, keep them happy,
and listen to what they tell you. And he'd be
the first one to tell you that. So, yeah, that's fun.
And it was just fun that he was the guy
in charge and he was the guy making things happen

(25:44):
for that horse. It was a blessing for him after
his career, and I think it was just wonderful for
the sport. So he was a riot and he knew
how lucky he was, and it's nice to see that
not everybody acts that way. In fact, the owner didn't,
so it's good that the trader did. Neither owner did.

Speaker 8 (26:05):
So Jason Art really reminded me of Melvin Study because
those two guys really were just the you know, are
the nicest guys at the track. And you know, we
lost mel a couple of years back, but mel was
just such a great personality. Art the same way. Art
just couldn't have been nicer. And both guys were just
great guys to be around. And I was only in

(26:27):
the presence of them a few times, had a few
conversations with both of them, but both just the nicest
guys and their reputation. Really, I think they made the
game better. It's just a joy to be around them.
And I think everybody felt that way when they were
interviewed after winning a race, even if they lost a race.
Those guys were just great guys. And yeah, Art Sherman

(26:49):
certainly is a name to remember.

Speaker 6 (26:52):
Yeah, absolutely, And we can't let Victor Espinoza go unmentioned.
That was the career ride for him as well. And
another good guy, a fun guy, guy with a good
sense of humor, and he also understood how fortunate he
was to have that mount and keep that mount and
do a lot of the right things and win some huge,

(27:14):
huge races. So good for Victor as well. Speaking of
trainers who are good guys, we've lost another one this week,
Eddie Truman. This week. I didn't know him well him
a little bit, but anybody that didn't know him, he
was right up there with the great guy group.

Speaker 8 (27:36):
Wow, I did not know that, Jason, I've known Eddie Truman.
In fact, Eddie is one of the first trainers I knew.
Eddie came over to the driving range where I was
a golfer, a young golfer that was aspiring to be
a tour pro, and I hit balls with Eddie Truman,
and Eddie would give tips to the guys years and
years ago. I'm talking forty years ago, Jason thirty five

(27:58):
years ago. And I knew Eddie pretty well. And this
is the first time I've heard of that, very very sad,
and I know he had gotten out of the game
a year and a half or two ago. I don't
know if that was because he had an illness. Do
you know what happened.

Speaker 6 (28:10):
I don't think so, I'm not I'm not sure that
was the case. So I think it was a bit
of a surprise. I'm really not sure. So I'm not
going to go down that road.

Speaker 8 (28:19):
Yeah, not an old guy. I mean, I would say
Eddie was probably in his sixties.

Speaker 6 (28:25):
I think he was seventy two.

Speaker 8 (28:27):
Oh he was Okay, there you go. I thought he
was still in the sixties. But you know, the problem
is is I'm getting older now, so that when people
are a little bit older than me, they're they're yeah, okay,
all right, yeah, but that's kind of a.

Speaker 6 (28:40):
You know, that generation trainer is almost gone. Yeah, So yeah,
that was a that was a tough one. So, yeah,
the game changes, the game moves on. Yeah, if you're
long enough, these are the kind of thing as it happened,

(29:02):
that's just part of the game. So yeah, Well, to
dedicate this show to Daddy, who was a guy who
was in southern California in the racing game with horses
for thirty five years. I don't think anybody ever had
a bad word to say about it. That's hard to
pull off, especially in racing. That's not easy to do.

(29:23):
So that tells you a little bit about the character
of the man and to every single person that's talked
about him, talked about him the way you did, and
that's quite a tribute to being horse racing that long
and be looked at and thought of that way. Impressive,
good stuff there, all right, Okay, Well racing today at

(29:44):
losal five horses in the Los Futurity, three of them
trained by Bob Baffert. That's a familiar refrain. The rest
of the card just okay. Picks up a little bit
Towards the end of the card. You had a bonus
race on there. I think you're going to talk about
an out of town race. You hit a nice one.
You yesterday had one race as a bonus from Tampa.
Your key horse ran second the exactly paid one hundred

(30:06):
and thirty four for two as a very nice score.
You're going to try to do that again at Gulf
Stream today. But there's another race you're going to talk
about a Gulf.

Speaker 8 (30:15):
Stream right, Yeah, we're going to talk about race eleven
at golf Stream today. Jason. Oh my goodness, we just
missed yesterday and our horse was really hooked. I thought
he was a horse that could clear early, did not clear,
just battled every step of the way, and then when
they turned for home he got a length or two
on the field and gosh, I tell you what, right
when I started thinking about maybe this horse had a chance,

(30:37):
he got run down. But we did get that exactly there.
But just a big, big effort there yesterday down at Tampa.
And we're going to try to do that, Jason, in
the next couple of weeks, until they get to to
the Santa Nita, we're going to try to pick off
a race or two out of town. And today we're
going to try to pick off race eleven, which is
the Tropical Park Derby down at Gulfstream Park.

Speaker 6 (30:58):
Let's do it.

Speaker 8 (30:59):
So here we go I'm going to talk about this
rail because I mentioned this when we did a little
Gulf Stream turf of review a couple of weeks ago.
And the rail is at forty five. When I see
the rail at forty five at this track, and again
in a state race, kind of unusual to have the
rail out that far, but they do that at this track,
and I think it's very important to check because it

(31:20):
really does change the complexion of the race. And I
think these horses on the inside really have trouble finding room,
especially in a race where there's not a ton of pace.
And there is not a ton of pace in this race.
So the horse that's going to show the way and
here is the nine horse and that is a horse
name Silent Heart, And whether he shows the way or not,
it's going to have a definite tactical legend here. This

(31:42):
horse had been running short, ran very well last time
when he stretched out. Definitely one of the horses to
beat the fastest horses the ten Kujino, and we're gonna
use this one as well. But I like a long
shot in here, Jason, and it's number eleven, and that
is a horse named can Group. And this is a
horse that I'm going to go back to our man
Alan Benowitz and talk a little bit about an angle

(32:03):
that he's talked about for years, and that is a
first time four year old. Now this is not a
first time four year old, but this is a variation
of a first time four year old because this horse
is a three year old that's been off since June.
So this is the horse that's had that time. It's
had five six seven months to grow up, and as
a two year old, this horse was really something. In fact,

(32:25):
I was very disappointed in myself when this horse won
the Bourbon Stakes because I absolutely loved his maiden win
at Kentucky Downs, and I remember using this horse in
an exotic and I didn't have the winner in that race,
so I didn't cast and this horse came absolutely flying,
and I was kicking myself because the horse paid fifty

(32:45):
dollars in that race, and I knew the horse flash talent.
Next race, he come to the Breeders Cup and the
horse that won that was a European. We know how
strong those Europeans can be. I thought the top three
horses were very strong in that race, and this horse
was extremely wide and ended up running fourth. Beatn two.
Then they go on the Kentucky Derby trail and they
try the dirt. You always see these horses do that,

(33:08):
and then they seem to not get better on the
turf when they go back. Not sure why they did that,
but hey, they did that. The next effort wasn't that.
I don't have an excuse for the last two. But
now they give this horse some time. I'm not a
huge first time gelding guy, unless Jason, unless I have
reason to know that this horse had a lot of talent,

(33:28):
and I really think those first three races were this
horse had talent. So I did have this horse and
stable mail. Now he comes back and here we go.
We talked about Victor Espinoza a little earlier. This is
jar on a horse on a big money race. Love
seeing these guys, Mike Smith, John Velasquez, Victor Espinoza. These

(33:48):
are veteran guys. And hey, look at the rides that Jr.
Put up in the Breeders Cup. The Breeders Cup sprint
ride was amazing. How he raided the horse. And then
he comes back in the Matriarch and there he is
ugg in the rail every step of the way, pops
off it and ends up winning by a foot in
a race where the favorite drew outside and went wide
and was really the rider that made the difference. So

(34:09):
Jr And a big money race can still do it.
I like this post position again. I'm a little worried
about the pace because we got to worry about Silent
Hard on the lead. We got to worry about this
fast horse Coagino ten.

Speaker 6 (34:20):
So here it is.

Speaker 8 (34:21):
We got a big price in this horse. Let's play
this one to win, or you can play win in place.
I'm gonna play two exact the boxes in here. I'm
gonna play one with the nine Silent Heart, one with
a ten Kohino, and then we're gonna go out. Maybe
it's co Gino. I'm going to play a three horse
try box in here nine to ten eleven and it's
the eleven horse can group to upset in race eleven

(34:41):
out of gaul Stream today.

Speaker 6 (34:43):
Okay, deep closer can group trained by one of my
favorite trainers, Mark Cassie, and like you said, tried them
on the Derby trail, did not work, did not return
to form that he has a two year old, but
now he's had that long break and he comes back
as we'll call him a pseudo first time four year old.
It essentially the same, the same thing. So this is

(35:03):
race eleven. It's the last race on the card at
Gulf Stream and it is the Tropical Park Derby mile
sixteenth on the grass. The eleven can group with the
ten Kujino and the nine Silent Heart. Steve appreciate it.
As always. We will talk to you next.

Speaker 8 (35:19):
Week, Yes we will, Jason. I'll have out of town
up starting next Friday for those of you that are
going to be playing, and I'll be doing selected races Tampa.
Gulfstream will be the primary focus. And I have a
great day out there everybody, and we'll look forward to
talking to everybody next week.

Speaker 6 (35:37):
All right, very good Steve Pollock enrolling. You got Bruno
de Julio on the other side, followed by Jay Friedland.

Speaker 6 (38:36):
Man tollm check count first great storyteller, a rock and
roll kind of invented. I was lucky enough to seek
Chuck Berry, had to go see him. How about this
book Chuck Berry? James Brown? Who followers James Brown? You

(39:03):
can't go on after James Brown. But Chuck did his
thing with his backup Van fill In band. Chuck didn't care.
He was Chuck Barry. They just played behind him. All right,

(39:47):
you heard it here on Inside Racing. All right, let's
bring on our man Bruno to Julio Bruno.

Speaker 7 (39:53):
Good morning, Hey, Jason, you sound really really it looks
like you're ready for another vacation.

Speaker 6 (40:03):
Not sure what that means, but okay, I think that's
because I sound good.

Speaker 7 (40:06):
I don't know, it's that conversation last night. That's why
I threw that in there. But hey, I got a
Perry Martin story for you.

Speaker 6 (40:13):
Oh, here we go. Okay, the breed, the breeding genius.

Speaker 7 (40:17):
Yeah, so it's it's I think it's Belmont. I'm at
the Belmont for the California Chrome and I had really
gone through California Chrome's pedigree and Lucky Pulpit was out
of a mayor called Lucky Soft. Lucky Pulpit was a
sire and Lucky Soft. When I pulled up Lucky Soft

(40:40):
the mayor, she was a half sister to Trolley's song.
Why is Trolley song important? That's the damn of unbridled song.

Speaker 6 (40:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (40:52):
And so I'm sitting there and I'm talking to Perry
Martin and I brought this nugget out. Right. He looked like,
to me, like I was this character that came out
of Game of Thrones. You know, I was like the
little guy from Game of Thrones.

Speaker 6 (41:08):
You know.

Speaker 7 (41:09):
He looked at me like he just had no clue
what I was talking about. And I always kind of
thought about that, and I went. He didn't say interesting,
he didn't say wow, that's really you know. And if
you look at California Chrome as an individual, he looked
like an Unbridled Song.

Speaker 6 (41:28):
Yep.

Speaker 7 (41:28):
So you know, with the chrome and the feet and yep.
I never forgot that. So, you know, according to him,
I was part of the cast of Game of Thrums.

Speaker 6 (41:40):
Yeah. Well, like I said, when you get really, really
really lucky, you got to acknowledge it and you know,
take it for what it's worth. Those guys did not,
for whatever reason, chip on their shoulder. I don't know,
racing is tough. Racing is not kind to guys like
them who come out of nowhere and have a great horse.

(42:01):
Racing can be very tough on those guys, some people
in racing, and I think they were and those guys
didn't take it well. But that's a that's a pretty
funny story and it kind of lines up with with
what I remember from from him, So, yeah, that's a
good one. He didn't know, but he's a breathing genius. Ah,
everyone is. That's the funny thing about breeding. Everyone's a

(42:23):
breeding genius, but nobody knows anything. That's That's what I
think is the funny thing about about breeding. You can
give it your best shot, but you can also end
up with a California crown. So it's one of the
reasons the game is fun. You can pay millions of dollars,
but you can get beat by a horse that you
know costs next to nothing, and that's one of the attractions.

Speaker 7 (42:44):
Of the game.

Speaker 6 (42:46):
Keeping going.

Speaker 7 (42:47):
Are you a Yellowstone fan?

Speaker 6 (42:49):
I was the first two seasons. After that, I think
it has absolutely just lost its mind. But yeah, the
first two seasons were fun. I'm a Kevin Costner fan.
So the fact that he was leaving the show. You
know that was good.

Speaker 7 (43:06):
If you get a chance to just watch one episode
for me, and that is the last episode that they
that they aired last week, and the episode it's got
something to do with auction and horse selling and things
like that. It was so spot on the way it
was depicted on Yellowstone as they're trying to sell off

(43:27):
their stock from their Yellowstone and they're they're all their
horses and everything, and there's a whole segment on selling
horses that is absolutely the sales industry and a nutshell.

Speaker 6 (43:43):
Good I will watch that well. The guy who created
a Taylor Sheridan is a really really good writer. Wrote
a couple of great movies before he did Yellowstone. I
recommend people ones called to Help to Hell, Heller Highwater
with Jeff Bridges, awesome movie horses. He loves horses. Most
of Yellowstone is about horses, frankly, so he does know

(44:06):
that industry.

Speaker 7 (44:07):
He's also done The Lioness, which is on Prime Video.
He's also done False King, which is an excellent show.
I'm a big fan. And he's got a new one
I believe.

Speaker 6 (44:18):
Called Billy Bob Thornton land Man Man right.

Speaker 7 (44:23):
Right, But if you, if you're out there and you're
a fan, a Yellowstone fan, pay attention to the last
episode that they aired. I want to say, it's episode
eleven or ten or eleven, and and it's and it
talks about sailing horses, and it does a whole segment
on selling horses in a selling auction scenario. It is

(44:49):
absolutely on what happens in racing.

Speaker 6 (44:52):
Well, you you've been to enough of them so you
would know. And you've been on different sides of it too,
so you know, it's a it's a whole world into itself.
Let's just put it that way. I had a lot
of experience with that when I was doing research for
my book, talking to some smaller owners who were at auctions,
some big ones, some new. The end of the game,
we're getting scalped. Really really interesting. Uh. World difficult one. Uh.

(45:19):
A lot of lying, a lot of shading, the truth
game playing. So I'm glad that he got that, and
I'm sure he got it right. Well according to you,
he did so then he did. So that's that's a
funny one. That's good.

Speaker 7 (45:33):
Hey, is like watching the shales industries, like watching Green Acres.
Remember Green Acres, and you get you get mister Haney.
Come over, mister Douglas. I got a sure fire imitation
fake let or couch for you. You know, that's exactly
what the sales industry hopefully. I sounded like him too.

(45:56):
Then I had a lot of mister Hanies out there.

Speaker 6 (45:59):
Oh it's full of me Hanny's. But they're slicker than
mister Hanney.

Speaker 7 (46:04):
I reckon, I reckon, they're Jason.

Speaker 6 (46:07):
Yeah, Hay was a great He was a great, great
TV character. But yes, there's a there's a lot of
that going on at the sales vhot. I got a
horse for you. They're looking for the they're looking for
the new owner, looking for the guy with deep pockets
who really doesn't quite know yet what's going on, and
everybody lines up to get in his pockets. It's just

(46:29):
got it.

Speaker 7 (46:29):
I got a funny mister Haney kind of story. I
walked into this consigner and he pulls me out this horse,
and he's like, Bruno, this is a bone of five
steaks horse. He's clean as a whistle, I guarantee it.
So I looked at him. He was a decent looking animal,
and I had my Now he's got my interest piqued
as far as being clean as a whistle, So I

(46:51):
had my vet goal over him.

Speaker 6 (46:52):
I mean, he let that horse lit up like a
Christmas street.

Speaker 7 (46:55):
Okay, but every every little thing that could be wrong
with his joints and everything. So I always learned that,
you know, and I always still walk into the shed.
I go, let's go talk to mister Haney.

Speaker 6 (47:04):
You know, yep, yeah, that's the job, you know, their salesman.
But yeah, it's a tough business and when it's not
going to change a whole lot, they have all the
power of readers and the sales and they're they're entrenched, tough,
tough to beat that game. All right, let's let's move
off of that and uh on quickly to uh to

(47:27):
Eddie Truman, who I know you knew, and uh we're
very sad to see that he passed.

Speaker 7 (47:33):
Well, we went from Chuck Berry to mister Haney, and
we're going to go and put the icing on the
cake with Eddie Truman. What a wonderful man he was.
All the things I remember the most about Eddie's He
always smiled at you, nod at you, said hello, said goodbye,
how were you? Good morning? He is just one of

(47:54):
the most pleasurable people are run into the track. I
don't think I ever saw that man sour And you
know what, you walk around the track, you see a
lot of sourness. You know, it's almost like, you know,
it's sour is the order of the day sometimes. But
he was wonderful and he'll be sorely missed. I hope
he's in a better place now and maybe training horses

(48:16):
up there.

Speaker 6 (48:18):
I'm sure that was his passion. It's what it's what
he did. Also played pretty good golf, according to Steve
So who knew going way way back. But he was
always in shape. I know that, and was a big
bike rider. And I didn't know this, but I heard
he used to ride his bike from Santa Anita to
Del Mark so back in the day when they went

(48:38):
down there for the summer. So that's that's pretty good
shape for sure. That's that's not an easy ride.

Speaker 7 (48:44):
His main clients when I started the game was academic farms,
I believe, and I was involved with John Ornans at
the time, so I knew a little bit about Eddie
because John dealt with Eddie and I was like in
the nineteen eighties when we actually had hair, and it

(49:04):
was you.

Speaker 6 (49:05):
Know, he'll be missed.

Speaker 7 (49:06):
He's ben Cecil also passed away. And that was another
gentleman too, very English, very and I hope he was
even Yeah he was for sure again he was all English, yes, oh,
but he was just a wonderful, really beautiful man that
really when you talk to him, he paid attention to you,

(49:27):
he responded, class ack, he'll be missed as well.

Speaker 6 (49:32):
Yeah, agreed, agreed. Yeah. I had a one fun afternoon
with ben Cecil, whichual friend, and he started telling some
stories and with that accent, a great sense of humor.
I remember that day out of Santa Neita pretty well.
So I was very sorry to see that that he passed.

Speaker 7 (49:50):
That little crooked smile. He gave me a cooked smile
out of his set of his mouth, you know, and
he told him something funny he had just he was
really a wonderful man.

Speaker 6 (50:00):
Yeah. It was good, great sense of humor, which you
need at the racetrack. So yeah, very helpful to have
to have that. All right, we're a little tight on time.
You wanted to talk about the tropical park oaks. Steve
talked about the Derby, So let's get to the Phillies.
I believe it's raised eight at Gulf Stream Park.

Speaker 7 (50:20):
Yes, and we're going to move right into something you know,
and that's Good Dolphin.

Speaker 6 (50:24):
Yeah, boy, are they on a little right now.

Speaker 7 (50:27):
What is Good Dolphin's main mission statement with Phillies.

Speaker 6 (50:37):
Well, they just want them to be part of the
Brutemeer band. They want them to win the graded steaks,
get the black type and then you know, and then
and then breed them. And it's worked.

Speaker 7 (50:48):
And if you look at Godolphin over the past few months,
they've really been on fire, especially in State's company Stix Company.
They're winning thirty to especially graded company. So the number
four pendulum for Brendan Walsh. First of all, it's a
good Dolphin. Second of all, they're putting it up and

(51:09):
none graded make get black type. They want to get
black type with these horses. That's one thing when you're
handicapping these stakes, you just don't go for the fastest horse.
You don't go looking for horses that you know, you know,
look like good on pedigree. You've got to look at
the connections and what the connections want to achieve. They
want achieve it's Philly to get black type. She's listened

(51:31):
at ten to one. She fits in here and off
our workouts. On the twenty second of November worked with
a Philly named Minushka. Do you remember Manushka. Yeah, she
was phenomenal at Keenland. She was just absolutely destroyed the field.
If you watch that race, you're thinking this Philly's got

(51:51):
no chance of winning from dead lass at the quarterpole,
and she ends up winning going away. So is a
very good horse herself. And Pendulum works with her and
then very well finished in the last three eighths in
thirty four and four and thirty five and one respectively.
So I really like this Philly attend to one. She's
going to be my key in the late pick five

(52:15):
because I just think that at a price, she's going
to be value in your ticket because she may not
be attend to one. She might go off at nine
to two, four to one, but she's going to be
the value in your ticket because everybody's betting the ticket
looking at the ten the one morning line.

Speaker 6 (52:34):
Well, she's had two months off, which is nice, and
they're getting ready for her, you know, getting ready for
card for her four year old season and trying to
get her some grat mistakes and keep the go dolphin
roll going. It's been phenomenal three four months for them,
just just ridiculous. Everything's kind of coming together and this
is another nice one that they've got. She's been in

(52:54):
the money nine of ten times too. I didn't notice,
that's all. I was looking at her right now. That's
always nice, shows up pretty much every time, and like
I said, has had a nice little break here. So
the four pendulum playing, anybody with her or just would
take a look at her.

Speaker 7 (53:09):
I'm going to use her with the eight and help
me with the pronunciation Viva vou vv vv vvum with
Jack sisterson and Tallergath Leone on board. I'll also use
maybe the seven Lives in audible and the five see
you around. But look, if I get ten to one,
I'm going to the window to bet to win. Yeah,

(53:30):
you know, because I don't want to be able to
you know, be able to go and go get me
that Gordon Ramsey Health Kitchen Cookwar set and that's what
you need.

Speaker 6 (53:39):
Okay, I didn't. I didn't know that was your goal,
but I wish you the best of love.

Speaker 7 (53:45):
It's a little Christmas gift idea from racing with Bruno.
There you go.

Speaker 6 (53:49):
We like it all right. Gulf Stream eight number four
pendulum the key there for Godlf and Bruno as always appreciated.
You have yourself a great week and good luck today
and tomorrow and we'll talk to you Saturday.

Speaker 7 (54:01):
They have a great week.

Speaker 6 (54:02):
Cason, No the Julio doing his thing. Let's jump right
into mister Friedlander and do his thing. Jay, Good morning,
Good morning, Jason.

Speaker 10 (54:12):
How are you, Julie? Wellser it's kind of a lulland racing,
but there's some international stuff going around the country, and
I think the focus right now today is the Carlos Pellegrini,
the biggest race in Argentina, and you've got El Cadigo
going there, who's just been dominant this year. But if
you don't talk about handicap, you know, we try to

(54:35):
like weigh horses down in handicaps here to make it
a little more competitive. Well, al Cadigo draws number post
number twenty in a twenty horse field, so a little
bit of a handicap there for him.

Speaker 6 (54:45):
Yeah, that's not a weight handicap, but that can't be
a good post. I don't care what the configuration of
the track is. If you draw the twenty, that's not
gonna be a good thing. How bad a thing it is,
but not a good thing. And speaking of International Romantic
Warrior in Hong Kong last week, we boys he nice woo.

Speaker 10 (55:03):
Yeah, yeah, just impressive. Just kind of toyed with those
and they're pulled away late.

Speaker 6 (55:08):
Yeah he did. It's just it's fun to watch horses
that are that good do their thing and like you said,
Toyd with them, perfect position the whole way and when
the jockey asked, the horse went, oh okay, here we go. Done.
So yeah, very very impressive over there, and they got
the big race. Yeah, that's the big race down in Argentina.
We haven't seen one of those horses come and do
much in the Breeders' Cup. It's an automatic qualifier. You

(55:30):
have to see anybody really use that, but you never know.

Speaker 10 (55:34):
Yeah, yeah, this one is dominant. I think there's a
good chance he comes. Whether you can make an impact
against the Euros there's another question.

Speaker 6 (55:41):
Yeah, Well that's if he gets his opportunity. He gets
his chance, then then we'll be very interesting to see
how it plays out. And hopefully he'll draw better. You
can't draw worse than fourteen, right, twelve or fourteen so
that's a plus. All right. The low sal card today
not that easy to find much on there, but you
found a couple. And you're going to talk about race

(56:03):
number nine, correct, right after the Los al Futurity. Yeah,
Maiden claimer's going a mile.

Speaker 10 (56:10):
Yeah, we're gonna see if we can knock off battle
Cruiser here. Battle Cruiser comes from the John Saddler barn.
John's kind of picking his shots. He's two for three
down there, so yeah, when he's picking shots, he's he's
hitting him. And he draws abel As Kano away from
the one I like, and that's number one.

Speaker 7 (56:27):
Big game.

Speaker 10 (56:27):
And if you want to talk about connections that are hot,
you know Peter Miller, he's not having the hottest meat
this time, but in terms of this type of race,
when he goes on these big class drops, this one's
dropping from maiden fifty down to twenty thousand, so dropping
down to the bottom. And Peter Miller hits at fifty
five percent of these multiple class drops. And the jock

(56:49):
armandoy us So he's a pretty good jock on the
main circuit San Anina Delmar, but in this he's a giant.
Over at Los Alamito, he's four for eighty's fifty, so
you couldn't up to better position connections than a Miller
a Uso combination. They haven't teamed up very much, but
individually they've been doing great. Kind of interesting to see
if Abel ands Kano jumped off this horse by or

(57:11):
was he pushed by Peter Miller and went to the favorite.
It's one of these things we'll never know behind the scenes.
But I'll take our use over Losano in this spot.
Number one big game straight up in RaSE nine.

Speaker 6 (57:23):
Okay, seven to two on the morning line. I think
you'll get that. I think you get right around there,
four to one. And again, this is the final race
on the card, Mayden twenty going a mile. Good to
have the rail. It's a very short run to the
first turn there at Los Alaminos. The one big game
straight up in race nine at Los Alamitos for our
man Jay and quickly we got a golf stream.

Speaker 2 (57:45):
We do.

Speaker 10 (57:46):
Yeah, we're going to try to knock off Swan Lake
with a rod Ortiz from the Carlos. David barn won
the last two, but Uncle Armando is six to one
and I was really getting to him in the last race.
Closed nicely under zaias was getting to know him. Only
three quarterboy Fine actually beat Swan Lake the last time
they were in. So we'll play a quick trifecta here.
We'll play a dollar trifecta four or five with four

(58:08):
or five with all, a fifty cent trifecta four or
five with all with four or five, and the saber two, six, seven,
nine with four or five with.

Speaker 6 (58:15):
Four five And again this is raise ten at gaulf
Stream Park. So you're getting three nice races here at
Gulf Stream. This one's on the synthetic. And again the
key to five Uncle Armando in use with the for
swan Lake and play around there. Gulf Stream's tough. You
got the dirt, you've got the synthetics, you've got the turf,
and mix them up in the pick threes, fours and five,

(58:36):
so it makes it a little. It adds a little
extra to it, I think. But you've done very very
well down there, so keep the roll going, Jay, appreciate it,
and we'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 10 (58:48):
All right, Thank you, Jason.

Speaker 6 (58:50):
