Here John Henry takes the lead. John Henry, and now
it's time for Inside Racing full hour of coverage on
everything going on in the sport of kings here in
southern California and around the country. And here's your host,
Jason Levine.
Speaker 11 (03:42):
Yere hey, good Saturday morning to the ball and Jason
vandis is the Inside Racing number twenty first, there's no racing.
You're in southern California, Loby all day. Excuse me, We'll
get to that second, because that's good. There's some good
(04:04):
on today's show, there's some not good. Going to be
an interesting one, interesting time in racing, especially here in
sunny southern California. They are racing outside of California Oaklawn Fairgrounds,
and the best card would be at Goldstream. Three stakes
(04:25):
races they are, including the Harlan's Holiday, well actually four,
but three big ones, which is a prep for the
Pegasus is a month from now, five weeks from now
January twenty fifth, so that'll be interesting, very good race.
In fact, all three of the big stakes races at
gold Stream. Man I didn't realize the voice was going
(04:46):
to go this morning. No reason for that. All three
steaks at gold Stream very good races. Doesn't always happen
like that, but Harlan's Holiday, the Fort Lauderdale on Grass
going long, and the Swannee River Phillis and Mayor's going
a mile on the grass through twelve and the excellent
(05:07):
race Steve is going to talk about the Swannee River
Rakes eleven down at Gulf Stream Park. Steve does have
his out of town up today. I believe he has, well.
I know he has five races from Gulf Stream six, seven, eight, nine,
and ten and then the Pick four from Gulf Stream
and he's got a bonus race from Tampa Bay, so
that is available at Racindjason dot com. Of course Jay
(05:30):
has the full card from Gulf Stream Parks. We're all
over Gulf Stream and Bruno de Giulio has his workout
reports and picks from fairgrounds and I believe golf Stream
today as well. So a lot to talk about. The
good news is again for local folks here opening day
(05:52):
at Santa Anita five days away, the day after Christmas,
which does leave me a wish everybody he married Christmas
or a happy Hanukkah. I believe also in the same
day this year. That happens once every hundred years, so
that's a little different. So happy holidays to all out there,
(06:14):
unsafe holiday, get some time off, enjoy time with the family,
Spend time with my grandson yesterday. That was hilarious, as
it always is, so enjoy them while they're young and
genuine and fun. That was cool. So yeah, the day
after Christmas, Opening day, and full credit to Santa Anita
(06:35):
for getting a board the draw the card early and
get the information out there. The past performances are out
for opening day. It is an eleven race card and
we've got five days to work on it, which is
really cool because it's a really good card. We only
have about sixty's a year in Southern California and this
(06:56):
is definitely one of them and it came up great.
So a few notes about that, and again this is
December twenty sixth. You heard the spot there. The calendar
will be offered all kinds of other stuff happening, but
the racing eleven am first post right and early eleven
o'clock first post eleven races. Last race will go off
(07:19):
about en something like that. The first five races all
really nice field sizes. Race two there is a Bob
Baffert cult that there has been much talk about. We're
making his debut. Interesting to see that John Velaska's Johnny
V is out here and he was named to ride.
(07:41):
And I saw an interesting statistic on first time starters
trained by Bob Baffert in the last five years. Johnny
V is thirteen for twenty one, so look for that
orst roll. I believes Nathan San Sabo and of justified
Race two. So the first five races all nice fields,
(08:04):
really nice way to start off, the downhill race to
start the card, which is great. Then Race six used
to be the San Antonio and thankfully it is now
the Lafite Pinkai Junior, So my probably all time favorite jock,
probably the best jock of all time and certainly one
of the greatest guys in racing the feet. Pinkai has
(08:24):
a race named after him now and he should so
well done there. That's the older horse race going a
mile on a sixteenth on the dirt. That's followed by
the San Gray Brio, which is older horses going a
mile and eighth on the turf. That features Johannes best
turf horse in California, who ran a huge second in
(08:45):
the Breeders Cup mile. He's back trying to run a
race after the Breeders Cup, which is always a little tricky,
so just remember that. Then Race eight is the Malibu
and this is the feature because the Derby winner is here.
Mystic Dan is in Southern California. They drove him out
from the fair grounds, had difficulty getting a flight, so
decided to put him in the van and do the
(09:08):
mind that bird move and just drive him out. So
Mystic Dan spent a few days on the road. He's
been here for a few days getting acclimated to Southern
California on the racetrack, and he is going to make
his first appearance in a while, going seven furlongs on
the dirt against a pretty strong field in the Malibu,
(09:28):
which is always a great race and this year really
really fun. Good draw for Mystic Dan. I believe you do.
The seven Ben Tornado is in there. He was second
in the Breeders Cup sprint. Got some great information from
AmAm Bruno on Ben Tornado before that race and he
ran great at a huge price. He's back. Three up
(09:48):
and coming Bob Baffer horses are in here, and the
Santa Anita Derby winner in addition to the Kentucky Derby
Winter Santa I need Derby Winter's Stronghold is back, cutting
back for the first time to one turn, and so
the Malibu Race eight should go off around two thirty,
great race, followed by the Mathis Brothers Mile for three
year olds the grass, no superstars in there, but a
(10:10):
good betting race. Then the best race of the day
of the Librea, which is the three year old Phillies
going seven furlongs, and man, there's an exciting horse in
here named Accuracy who has run two ridiculously good races
in a row for trainer Mike McCarthy. Definitely figuring things
out and takes the ultimate step up in class today
(10:31):
from an allowance race to a very tough stakes race
including Hope Road for Bob Paffert, who is on a
four race win streak. Seven furlongs is perfect for her.
It is just a loaded seven furlong race, and we
are going to find out an awful lot about Accuracy
(10:53):
in the Librea. I'm opening day at around three thirty,
so that that's going to be awesome. And then closing
the Showmerican Oaks going along on the grass for Phillies
and Maras and we have a shipper in here named
She Feels pretty Who should win this race is probably
if there's a single in this sequence, it's either Johannes
or her. She rolled a couple months ago in the
(11:16):
Huey two of Keenland. She's a really, really nice Philly
that should have a huge year coming up, and she
should win this race. She needs to be probably have
a B plus or a minus game here. It's a
good field, it's a solid field. She'll be challenged, but
it'd be fun to see her close the card. So
excited about opening day. It is the ninetieth year of
(11:39):
Santa Anita Racing. Pretty amazing. So that's all the good news,
and now let's pull a cool cold water on it.
When I was in fifth grade, I played the Grinch
and the school play. It was fun. But it's time
for a little grinch here. Unfortunately, Northern California racing as
(12:04):
we know it is essentially finished. First Racing, who owns
Santa Anita and Gulf Stream among others, has wanted to
do that for a couple of years. If you remember,
they kind of shut down Golden Gate without telling anybody
or let everybody know, Uh, we're done, it's done, and
now it's all done. They tried to run at Pleasanton,
(12:24):
didn't work out very well at all, and it's Ober.
So we'll run the fair meets in the summer, which
is fun up there, and that's cool, but that's its major.
And they have saying that they're going to help the
horses ship down, the ones that stay up at Northern
California and train at Pleasanton, which will remain open. They're
(12:47):
going to pay for them to ship down and ship back.
Say they're going to add some races at the lower
levels for some of the Northern California horses at Santa Anita,
which is definitely a step down. We'll see. There's already
a couple of trainers who've indicated they're finished. They have
horses they're not gonna training under these circumstances. You can't
(13:12):
blame them. I'm sure there's owners who've made the same decision.
They're going to get rid of their horses. The bulk
of the Northern California horses are going elsewhere where they
can compete. Emerald Downs for Paradise, Canada, places like that, Canadbury.
It's going to be very interesting. This is going to
(13:34):
affect the breeding industry in this state severely. And yeah,
so it's a big, big, big deal and it's finished.
An Anita is struggling, and I have it on good authority,
(13:55):
well placed source at the Savior of Santa Anita, if
there's going to be one. Are these historical horse racing
machines that we've talked about on the show over the years.
They have really saved Oaklawn and made all the difference
in Kentucky. That's why Kentucky has massive purses. It's really
(14:19):
the only reason. And it's the same thing as true
at oaklann It is the only reason. They are slot machines.
They are based on the results of past races. And
it's that loophole that allowed the governments in Arkansas Kentucky
who let them have these slot machines while technically not
(14:43):
referring to them as slot machine. That's not going to
be as easy to pull off. Here in California, the
Native American tribes were given exclusivity by Governor Schwarzenegger. That exclusivity,
that's a big word, and that word has kept sports
betting out of California and has kept purses down in
(15:05):
California because there's no other revenue. New York, for example,
has a casino. That casino pumps a huge amount of
money into horse racing. We don't have anything like that
here in California, and we're struggling and we're on an island,
and so the move is going to be to try
to sneak through or get approval to use these historical
(15:28):
horse racing machines out here and supplement the purses with
the money that comes from people losing at this slot machine.
If you're not aware that slot machines are the best
odds for the house, the worse odds for you, you
play them, printing money for the casinos, and it would
(15:50):
be printing money for the horse racing industry. How are
they going to get this done? They need Governor Newsom
on this one. That's going to be difficult. There's going
to be a lot of political moves being made here, promises, etc.
They may try to just sneak them on and just
do it and say okay, now make us take them out.
I don't know what's going to happen, but it's kind
(16:14):
of the end game. I think. I hate to say it,
but it's ninety years of Santa Anita and I don't
think there's any chance there's ninety more. I don't know
if there's five more, especially if they don't get these machines,
which feels like a long shot. But my understanding is
they're taking a big swing at it, and there's a
lot of discussion and a lot of planning on how
(16:36):
to try to pull this off because these are tough times,
very tough times in so the California in California horse Race.
So you'll hear more about this as we move through
the year. For sure, they're going to keep a lot
of it under wraps, but eventually the move has to
be made. The current running first racing is Blenda Strawnak
(17:00):
Stronik's daughter, and just remember that horse racing was Frank
Stroniks thing, not Belenda's. It was his passion, not hers.
So that's a big fact. So unfortunately, that's uh, that's
where we're at here without racing on this Saturday. I
thought we talked a little bit big picture. There is
(17:22):
a great day coming up, but then the meat gets
rolling and we're back to some pretty short fields and
and we'll see how things play out. So sorry to
be the grinch here, but it's just reality. It's the
first time ever there's no racing in Northern California, right,
So things have changed dramatically in a few years, and
there's going to be more changes coming, so we will
see how that plays out over time. And yeah, that's
(17:47):
just where we're at. So on that note, sorry, Steve,
going to bring on our man, Steve Pollock, but a
little dose of reality there and where we're at moving forward.
So everybody deserved an update considering this being such a
strange time. So good morning, Steve.
Speaker 8 (18:11):
Wow, yeah, good morning. It's almost hard to believe that
this is where we're going, but anything is reality. When
when Hollywood Park was shut down, I no longer you know,
I no longer have the faith. I mean, I can't
believe that place was shut down, And when Northern California
(18:31):
was shut down, it didn't surprise me. And I'm just
not going to be surprised anymore. I'm hoping and hoping
hopefully this this this thing can pull through because I
still love racing. Uh you know, I've I've had to
move my tack really to much, seeing much more attention
to what's going on back east and and rightfully so,
but I am excited, certainly about opening day at Santa Anita.
(18:54):
That looks like some great racing.
Speaker 11 (18:56):
Yeah, it's it's exciting when people all kind of come
together and say we all want to run on that
day and the races are all laid out on that
day and they fill up and a lot of horses
you want to see are running and the fields are good. Sadly,
it feels like a throwback day. You know, you used
to have a lot of those days. Now we have
five or six out here a year in southern California.
(19:19):
There are like that seven maybe, but this is definitely
one of them. And we've talked about this. But awfully
nice for them to have the PPS out a week
in advance. That's something that probably should have been doing.
It's great years ago, but they're doing it now and
it's awesome. So I knew they were coming out Thursday.
I was excited they came out, I got them, and
I've kind of been excited since. And I just have
(19:43):
to watch myself. I don't want to do too much
work right, take it easy, but it's going to allow
us to really dig in on this card.
Speaker 8 (19:51):
Absolutely, and I sort of agree with you. I'd kind
of scanned through the car and then as I got
to the last two races and I ran into that Librea.
What a race that is. Oh my goodness, a lot
of a lot of runners that are gonna going to
have some good four year old seasons or in that one. Yeh,
Tamara coming back and very very excited to see what
(20:13):
what she can do and what Richard Mandela can do
with a horse that we really thought was a special
two year old. And uh, you know, you mentioned a
couple of the other ones, but you know, the the
potential of that field is certainly good. And I thought,
Hope Road ran a better race than you know, than
the than the Philly that won the distaff. So she
(20:34):
ran on the undercar and I think Baffort, you know,
maybe gave her the easy way out. That was a big,
big effort that she put in there. And if you
if you look at the time of that race and
you compare the chart, her effort was very very good.
And I think she would have been super competitive in
that distaff. So let's be really really nice to see
what those two can do against the couple that you
(20:55):
mentioned as well.
Speaker 11 (20:56):
Yeah, I mean that race. I think it's one of
the most exciting things in racing. For me always has
been the up and coming super talent having to step
up and face, you know, the most serious opponents in
their division. It's the same thing kind of in boxing, right.
It's the same thing in any kind of individual sport tennis, right,
(21:16):
the young up and coming hot shot all of a
sudden has to step up and play Yokovic or Federer
or Dull and you find out what they're made of.
And that's how it should be, and you can't avoid
it for too long. And that's what's happening here in
the Librea with the number two Philly Accuracy, who you know,
was pretty good in her first two starts, ran third
in both, and then the light went on and she
(21:38):
won by fifteen, then came back and won by seven,
and she just dusted those fields like they were nothing
and looks like an absolute superstar. But there wasn't much
behind her. Those were short fields and she crushed them.
This is a very tough field and Hope Road is
as good as we've got out here, and she's in
great form. Seven forlongs is perfect for her. So it's
(22:02):
really cool to see those kind of matchups. For me,
that's kind of one of the best things about racing
is you can't avoid it for too long. You got
to face him, and you know, five days from now
we'll find out a lot more about Accuracy, who interestingly
is one of the horses that was brought out here
by Micropoli, who has a lot to say about the game.
Some of that I agree with, a lot of it
(22:23):
I don't, But he did put his money where his
mouth is and said I'm going to try to support
California racing and I'm going to send some horses out,
which almost nobody has done other than you know, getting
paid to come out for Delmar with the ship and
win and all that. But it's nice to see and
it looks like he's got a really really good one
here and we're going to find out a lot about her,
as is he the day after Christmas, So that's going
(22:46):
to be cool.
Speaker 8 (22:48):
Yeah, she's got a lot of things that I really
liked to in a seven furlong race, a tactical horse
going made longer distance, so the horse is actually cutting
back but has speed and you just you know, you
just don't want to get too far behind in these races.
In Santa Anita, we know that she's going to be
able to be tactical and again that cutback. These horses
are just legged up. These seven furlong races are tough races,
(23:10):
but boy, they're just set up nicely for horses that
have speed like this one does and are cutting back.
So she's got two big, big pluses there. And you know,
I've been working right here at Santa Anita, so this
should be absolutely no issues for her at this distance.
Speaker 11 (23:28):
Yeah, she's just got an awful lot to beat. I
don't think that's the greatest draw for her. I think
she'd probably rather be outside or the connections would the
two hole. But she does have very good speed, so
she's going to have to use it, and then mister
Reesepallee is going to have to make some decisions because
there's going to be plenty of other speed, including the
horse inside her, who is an up and coming Bob
(23:49):
Baffort runner who's really quick and drew the rail and
has to go. There's speed next to on both sides.
There's Bafforts on both sides that can really run, so
it'd be a very very interesting race from the moment
they opened the gate. So just a really cool card
on opening day at Santa Anita and look forward to
seeing a lot of folks out there. Whether it should
(24:10):
be good, it's not going to be hot, it should
just be beautiful out there at the Great race Place,
and looking forward to having a great day.
Speaker 8 (24:20):
Yeah, I agree with you too. I like having these
pps out early. I wouldn't mind if they'd get the
odds up for us early, but certainly get a good,
good idea. Have plenty of time to watch the tapes
and watch the replays and fill in all the numbers
and just a lot to do. But I really like
having this extra time on these big cards. I think
(24:43):
you can really get dialed in and give yourself a
big edge over the other players.
Speaker 11 (24:48):
Yeah. I agree. It is a four day week, so
they're going to run Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. We'll see
what happens with those cards. I think the Saturday card
comes out today, I believe. Yeah, it's going to be
a good week to kick things off at it San Anita,
and then we'll go from there. So your attention today
was focused down in Florida. Five races from Gulf Stream
(25:12):
and one from Tampa Bay.
Speaker 8 (25:13):
Correct, Yeah, that is correct. Jason got some nice turf
racing down there. I think both of those turf courses
are very different, but I think they're both solid turf courses,
and that's primarily the focus for me. With this out
of town line that we are going to pick up
for next year, for sure, we're going to be doing
(25:34):
the out of town line out of town plays as well,
and the primary focus will be the grass races in
South Florida.
Speaker 11 (25:42):
Yep. Yeah, that Tampa Bay Course is beautiful. Everybody just
raves about it. It looks great. I've paid a lot
of attention to that track over the years, but the
turf course is phenomenal down there, So that's that's good
for I know, all the connections you know, appreciate that
and want to run there because it seems eight and
pretty fair from what you've.
Speaker 8 (26:03):
Seen, pretty pretty interesting turf course. I would say that
there are certain races that I think are fair. They
run a lot of very cheap horses on that turf course.
They run a lot of non winter two lifetimes and
a lot of cheap maiden races. I mean, they ran
a maiden sixteen there you know, yesterday, And I'll tell
(26:24):
you when you see those cheaper horses run and horses
can get loose on that course. Speed does very very well,
and horses can pay big, big numbers down there. You know,
speed play definitely. Speed is definitely in play, and you
can get some prices on there, you know, pedigree plays
because you've got some bunch of first time turfers, So
(26:45):
those races are wide open for prices. And then sometimes they'll,
you know, they they'll they'll get a little bit better field.
Horses might ship in from from Gulf Stream and some
of the stake races down there, and and those are
competitive races as well, but pretty fair turf course. I
think he can be outside there. It's a little bit
better to save ground. And there's some real dominant turf
(27:07):
riders down there too that you really have to keep
your eyes on. So that's that's just something Cintendo has
been doing it for years down there, and he's one
of the better riders down there to keep an eye on.
But it's it's it's a pretty interesting grass course to bet,
that's for sure. Jason.
Speaker 11 (27:24):
Sounds like opportunities knocking there on some of those cheaper races,
That's what I'm hearing from you. So it feels like
you're going to be paid.
Speaker 8 (27:32):
I really like him. You know, you can go, you
can miss ten or twelve in a row, and then
you can just completely knock one out of the park,
and that's just something that we don't have as much
down here. So that's why I'm excited about him. I mean,
I'm really, you know, really looking to go deep in
some of those races. And again, you catch a couple
of those in a row, and you can really get
yourself well ahead of the game because there are thirty
(27:53):
forty fifty sixty dollars possibilities out there on a regular
basis in those cheaper turf races that I don't feel
we have as much here now.
Speaker 11 (28:02):
We don't. Well, we'll see what happens when some of
the no cow horses show up. We will be running
some cheaper races, and you know, maybe that'll shake things
up a little bit. I don't know, but we're going
to find out that is definitely going to happen in
the next month. We're going to see how many horses
are going to shift down or try to come down permanently,
and how much of a difference that makes. They're talking
(28:25):
about trying to run Thursdays. I don't think that's going
to happen, but I'm not sure it's even a good idea.
But we'll see. There are going to be more horses,
so it's it's a new time, and then we have
to just keep our eyes and ears open and see
how it plays out. Let's jump today down to a
Gulf street where you spent put most of your attention,
and you're going to talk about the final race in
(28:46):
the card, right, Race eleven, the Suwannee River.
Speaker 8 (28:50):
Yeah, the old Sawanee River. You pronounced that. Well, that's
for sure, Jason. I like a horse in here, really
very very good looking horse on tape, and this is
the eight horse Saffron Moon. And if you take a
close look at the PPS, this horse has really done
nothing wrong in her career. She did start a little
bit later, and she's very lightly raced if you want
(29:13):
to really try to pull Coles in here, but Brown
has had this one ready to go almost every time.
But what I really like about her look back at
the race three back and look back at the race
six back, and both of those were firm turf courses.
She's run four of her six races where they've had
weather involved in the race and She's caught good turf
courses on those and it isn't like she's ever run poorly.
(29:36):
She's one out of four with two seconds in those races.
Both of her races on firm turf have been really dynamic,
and she's one and one easily and pulled away, and
I think she's in a really good spot to get
a good trip. I don't think it's as important to
save Brown at this turf course as it is and
some of the races out here, especially when the rails
at zero. So I'm okay with the eight hole. I'm
(29:57):
certainly okay with this rider. Tyler leone and Chad Brown
and a fresh horse at at six to one morning
line very intriguing to me. I would be very happy
with five or maybe even nine to two on this
one at the eighth Saffron Moon, coming off of about
a sixty day layoff here, I think we'll be ready
to go and if she can get some room. She
(30:19):
just didn't get it until very very late last time,
and she absolutely exploded when she got out. And you
know that inside trip at Keenlan has always been tough.
You know, that was the race that the ride that
she got last time from Pratt, and you can all
visualize where the horse is on the inside and then
you're just waiting for that hold open. And Pratt had
(30:40):
to come about a sixteenth of a mile into the
stretch where he just didn't have anywhere to go. Boy,
when he finally got this one out. She was clearly
much the best in that race last time, and I
think she can get the job done. Although there are
some stake runners in here. The One Ocean Club has
a little bit of a pace edge. I'm going to
use this one in an exotic and then the shipper
here that interests me is number eleven. Breath Away been
(31:03):
running very competitively in a couple of steak races up
in New York for Hive Percentage trainer Christopher Clement. And
for those of you who haven't been watching back east
this Dylan Davis. He's really got himself up to the
top echelon in riders. So we've got some very very
solid riders in this race, including Dylan Davis righting the
(31:23):
eleven here, But I like the eight Saffron Moon going
to play this one to win. And two simple exact
the boxes here with the One Ocean Club and the
eleven breath Away, it's the eighth Saffron Moon and Race
eleven out of Gulfstream today.
Speaker 11 (31:37):
All right, that closes out the card there. You do
have to pick four on the out of town line
in addition to those five other races from Gulf Stream
and the one from Tampa Bay. But again race eleven,
the eighth Saffron Moon, coming off a two month break,
now a five year old mayor and going to use
with the one and eleven Gulf Stream Park. I think
(31:58):
wishing you and yours America Christmas and a happy Conica

All right, we're back missus racing Jason. Very happy to
hear Bonnie Ray so her all time therapist. You know
an incredible underrated blues guitar player, great singer Bondy Ray
doing her thing. Reminder and Ira Bets always doing their thing,
always offering different promotions and bonuses. If you want to
open an account Jason two hundred, instill the code and
(35:50):
they will match up to two hundred dollars of your
initial deposit. So deposit two hundred it's free money. Take
it doesn't happen often day. You can get twenty dollars
back when you bet at least one hundred at fair
grounds and golf streams. That is a ten percent rebate, right,
one hundred each, that's two hundred. You get twenty back
(36:11):
win or lose. So if you're gonna play fair grounds
in golf stream I mean, why not opt in one
button to click and he basically made yourself twenty dollars back.
So keep checking myra beets all the time for these
promotions because they keep popping up and they're all good
for the horse player, which is which is great. All right,
what else we got, Yeah, let's jump into Bruno Bruno.
(36:33):
Good morning.
Speaker 7 (36:35):
Hey, Jason, I want to issh you a merry Christmas
to you and your family. Is this the first Christmas
with your grandson?
Speaker 11 (36:43):
No? I mean he's two, but in his birthday is
the day after Christmas, so he's born on Santa Anita
Opening Day. So no, but he didn't really know what
was going on last year. This year, he's getting some
presents and he's i think pretty aware that they're there
for him, and he's starting to get a little excited
because he's been told there's presence coming his way, and
(37:05):
at two years old, that sounds pretty good.
Speaker 7 (37:08):
Yeah, it's not going to be too much time before
he's going to look at you and say, hey, Grandpa,
can you take me to sant Anita.
Speaker 11 (37:18):
Well that's going to happen. Yeah, that is going to happen. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (37:24):
Raised two daughters and I and I was never prouder
than than than my daughter when one big cap day
she looked at me and she goes, Dad, can we
go see silver charm? And my daughter was you know Joan,
And my oldest one was always a bit on the
shy side. She walked up right up to Bob and
(37:44):
Beverly Lewis stuck her hand out and said, I love
your horse. Oh well done, Yeah, oh well done. Absolutely,
you know, uh so you know you got that to
look forward to stride.
Speaker 11 (38:01):
Yeah, that's right, I'm excited about that. Well, she couldn't
have stuck her hand out. The two nicer people too
than the Lewist.
Speaker 7 (38:08):
One wonderful, wonderful, wonderful man and then his wife was
there were just you know, I think that was the
beginning of the end. When they were gone out of
the California Racing. So and I was listening to your
your monologue and you're talking about the people you know,
Santa Anita and the one step they have taken that's
(38:31):
positive that I did not see a del Mar was
drawing these cards seven days in advance. And I'm hoping
that goes through the year, not just for the holidays
in the first month of the season because and I
had this discussion with someone that that had horses in
(38:51):
California and they were bemoaning the fact that they were waiting,
you know that the racing office didn't want to have
you know, they drew on Thursday for some day. And
I said, and I told him, I said, back east
to get it right, because if you've got a horse
entered and you've got Friday to make arrangements to be
(39:12):
at the track by Saturday, or to travel to come
see a horse run, you're most likely not going to
do it. However, but if you give them five to
seven days to be able to work out all the arrangements,
because we all of us don't have private jets, you
know that we can just fly around and you can
do it that way, You're going to get more of
the involvement from these owners and their friends to come
(39:35):
out to their horses race on that weekend or whatever,
and I'm really happy to see them do that.
Speaker 11 (39:41):
Yeah, and I think especially important and interesting you bring
that up because with the new era and all these
horses up in Northern California, those folks are going to
need some time to know that their horse is running
so they can make the arrangements to come on down.
So the earlier they can do it, the better. I
think the horse shortage has been a big problem. They've
(40:03):
had difficulty filling races, and that's been part of the
problem here in southern California. So maybe that won't be
the case now with the influx of horses from the north,
and maybe they'll be able to draw earlier and continue
to do that, which I think is just a plus
for everybody. But good point about all the connections wanting
to try to make plans, especially if you're up in
(40:24):
No Call and you need you're going to need to
come down now to see your horse run, which is
a huge part of ownership. Watching on TV is a
little different. So yeah, that's something that I'm sure they're
thinking about. It's Annita and I know it's a goal,
and I hope they pull it off.
Speaker 7 (40:42):
You know, the interesting the just reaction that you just
gave me was exactly the reaction that I got from
this individual, this Bludstock agent who when I told him
I know and I said, hey, I know, they don't
want to do it, but what about the connections? And
he thought about it front of those I wonder if
then thought about that, and so we having to think
(41:03):
about it, disconnect between what makes sense and thinking about
the owner and the and of first and saying, hey,
we need to get the owner out of here. How
can we do that? You draw in advance, Yeah.
Speaker 11 (41:15):
Well, if they have to think about it now. They're
the ones that killed Northern California racing. So they're asking
all those people to run down here now. So you
got to try to make it as easy for him
as possible to A get their horse here and they
say they're going to do that, and B give them
as much time as possible to make arrangements to come
see their horse run and bring friends, right and bring
(41:37):
people and you know, enjoy a day out of the track.
Speaker 7 (41:40):
So uh, you as when I remember when Stronik took
over San Anita and the joke was, you know, when
they asked him about he was going to make all
these changes, and he said, well, the one thing that
I'm not going to change, the mountains will stay. And
and I don't think anybody asked Belinda about that.
Speaker 11 (42:05):
Nope, it's a different time now. She is her father's
daughter in some ways and in some ways not. They
had a big fight, she won, and here we are, so.
Speaker 7 (42:18):
Well, let's tell us something to talk about. Let's talk
about the Malibu And on Thursday, Jason mistick Dan.
Speaker 11 (42:26):
What's that? Miss stick Dan's in the Maliburu, the derby winner.
Speaker 7 (42:30):
Yeah, yeah, he is. But there's also you know, it's
interesting because he had a big workover at Fairgrounds fifty
nine and four. We had a minute worked with a
horse named lat Long, who's been working with a lot
of good horses for McPeek. He's pretty decent for himself.
They went thirteen the first eight and came home in
a minute excuse me, fifty nine and four, which is
(42:52):
about a forty six and four final half, and then
out in thirteen and one. So what impressed me about
mistic Dan is that he went thirteen early, but he
came home and you know, in forty six and change,
but also went a minute to finish in thirteen and one,
so he showed a lot of a lot of a
(43:12):
lot of run there. He does love fairgrounds. I'm going
to tell you he has worked his best worked as
a work best works at fairgrounds and then went on
to win at Oakland last last winter before getting good
to get into the derby had something to think about.
(43:32):
But there's a couple of horses that are also in here.
One of them is senior officer for Brad Cox, who's
gotten here for Jonathan Thomas. Jonathan Thomas is handling Brad
Cox senior officer, and it's two and I love this pattern.
I love when a horse comes in. He's coming off
the layoffs. And unlike Ben Tornado who ended up working
(43:55):
fifty eight and change, Cox and Thomas have senior officer
working in forty eight and four and forty eight, they're
not doing too much.
Speaker 11 (44:06):
To me.
Speaker 7 (44:06):
Sometimes these guys come in and they feel, oh, I
gotta work fast, I gotta I gotta let them roll,
I gotta do this. If you remember Ben Tornado when
he came into the brief of scuff and we loved him,
that day, he didn't have fast works. He came in
off of one O one. If I'm not mistaken at
del mar yep, okay, I think I had him one
(44:29):
on one and one or something from five as on
the Gallipa. However, when you look at Ben Tornado and
now all of a sudden they bring him here, he's
got a one thirteen over at at pal Meadows, which
is like going eleven and change here and then he's
got another fast work.
Speaker 12 (44:46):
I'm not so keen on that, you know.
Speaker 7 (44:48):
You know a lot of people love those bullet works,
They love those fast works. Those fast works. You get
enough bullets, you're gonna shot yourself on the foot and
and a lot of horses, if a lot of players
will be even these fast works are the indicator or form.
Sometimes those fast works are indicators that a trainer saying,
I got to wake his sob up, which is not
(45:09):
what you want, what you know. So I'm not one
that's going to say because I like Ben Tornado and
the Brita's Cup, I'm gonna like them here. I I'm
not as sure he's coming into the race as well
as he did in the Brita's Cup.
Speaker 11 (45:29):
I think you always have to be careful too, because
that's the race they're pointing to. You know. I mean,
they did everything they could possibly do to have them
one hundred percent on November two, as they should have.
That was the goal, and they did a great job.
You ran huge. This is not November second. This is
a oh, let's run him again race. You know, he's
still doing well, or maybe he's not doing as well,
(45:50):
but let's let's try to push him and you know,
and keep them going so we can get to squeeze
another race in. You know, there's a reason that only
one horse has won coming out of the Breeders' Cup
so far. I'm not sure how many have run, but
it's quite a few. Only one winner of horses that
ran in the Breeders Cup coming back.
Speaker 7 (46:10):
And I have a pattern for people to follow. He
needed a horse that comes in, let's say to del Mar,
and he runs big and they go back home, and
then to bring him back to del Mar. That second
effort is usually the one that's not going to be good.
So I follow that angle, and I don't do a
lot of angles. I am more specific. So that's something
(46:32):
to think about. Let's go back to mixtic Dan. Mixtick
Dan has been very good around one turn. His two
sprints at Churchill were very very good at five and
a half and six and a half. At keen Lenibra
actually ran second to Goose is a decent horse. I
think this horse is better at a seven eighths to
(46:55):
a mile than he is really going longer, because you
remember thee the Kentucky Derby. They ran home in the
last three quarters in sixteen and change. They weren't really
tearing the track up, and they've got a perfect scenario.
So maystick Dan may fit here at seven eighths. Keep
an eye on Senior Officer. He's going to be your
long shot. And take a look at one thing who's
(47:17):
riding him.
Speaker 11 (47:18):
Yeah, that was interesting. The horses run twice. He won
first time out, then he came from pretty far back
to run second next time out, and Flaby and Pratt
rides and I would have to think he had a
couple of choices in here, and he ended up on
Senior Officer, who, like you said, was working at Churchill,
then had to work at Turfway and has had one
(47:41):
work at sant Anita. So he's been out here for
probably two weeks I would say prior to this race,
at least two weeks for Brad Cox and Jonathan Thomas
looking after him. So he's obviously a talented horse and
they're taking a big shot here. He's stepping away up
to run in this Malbue. But obviously he's as with
a lot of talent and a lot of speed. It's
(48:03):
gonna be speed in front of him. He's going to
be coming. He's a you know, he's a closer.
Speaker 7 (48:06):
So and the horse that beat him, and the horse
that beat him is actually is actually pretty good. He's
just a nutcase and he has won a number of
racists just by running his competition into the ground. So
when he went forty four and fifteen and two at Churchill,
that's racehorse time.
Speaker 2 (48:27):
It is.
Speaker 11 (48:28):
And horse was coming at him, Yeah, he was. He
was coming at him.
Speaker 7 (48:32):
So that is an interesting Yeah. The other race I
wanted to quickly talk about was the eleventh race, the
Hillside Turf American Oaks. Yep, there's a really I mean
right now it's Sherry the votes world.
Speaker 11 (48:45):
And we just live in it.
Speaker 7 (48:47):
He has got a lot of really really good horses,
and this horse way back showed a lot of ability
as a two year old, came back to run, just
be unlucky and lose in the British Cup. Santa Anita.
I came back and won the Qili two Cup Grade
(49:07):
one at Keenland. Like six lanes. When they win by
six lanes on the turf, it's like winning by twenty
lanes on the dirt. And this horse came back on
December eighth at Keenland and went an unbelievable forty six
and four. You don't see that at Keenland. You don't.
And I have all the videos and I watch all
the works of it from Keenland. They don't work like that.
(49:29):
Watch for She Feels Prudy. I'm hoping to be able
to put the morning line and the postput program numbers
out because I think She Feels Prudy is going to
be very interesting. And let's give them something to talk
about at Oakland Park.
Speaker 11 (49:42):
Let's do it right now.
Speaker 7 (49:44):
All right, let's go to the fifth race. What's starting
to really starting to catalog all these workouts from Oakland,
so we're actually the first time you're going to have Oakland,
which is I have on your site Jason Oakland Workout
Report that goes with the pick. Again, there's never been
an Oakland h Oakline report. So the number one secret
(50:08):
Legend worked in company on December thirteenth with a multiple
winner named Runway Magic and went very well twenty three
to two thirty five, four, forty eight three and nine
in one oh one three. Now people say, well it's
a forty eight three, Well this is in California. As
he goes, a forty eight three from the gate can
(50:29):
be pretty good and you have to learn which track.
You have to learn tracked the way the horses work
over it, and not look at the times because you cannot.
Times are not comparable from across the board. So look
at the number one secret Legend. He's eight to one
in the morning line at six at six furlongs at
Oakland in the race in race five with Harry with
(50:53):
Kelsey Harr, I don't know the name for trainer Robert Klein.
Speaker 11 (50:58):
One secret legend. Yeah, ran third first time out, closing
quite a bit of ground on the turf at Canterbury.
But I checked this one out and absolutely bred for
the dirt so at turf phrase first time out. Not
sure what that was about, but showed the talent and
now gets to try the dirt, which is where the
workout took place and what the breeding says should be
(51:20):
should even be better. So the one secret legend. And
again this is Raise five today at Oaklawn Park. Yeah,
you have Oakland Fairgrounds and Gulfstream today.
Speaker 7 (51:30):
Correct, Yes, we got three tracks up there. And before
I go, can I wish Mary Christmas and to see
Paullock and his family and Jay friedland Are and his family.
Good people you got on.
Speaker 11 (51:44):
Yeah, I appreciate it. And to you and yours Bruno,
have a great few days of handicapping, playing and being
with family. And next time we talk to you, they'll
be running at Santa Anita.
Speaker 7 (51:57):
And thank god I get to do my Christmas carol
in on the show.
Speaker 11 (52:00):
Nope, we're done, doc to you next week, Gruno Degulio,
not singing for you this week. Maybe next week we're
going to come back with Jay Freelander right after this.

Good morning, Good morning, Jason. All right, we'll pick four
action at Gulf Stream for you last week, got that done,
trying to do it again today on a pretty nice
card down at golf Stream.
Speaker 13 (54:10):
Yeah, we'll go for the early pick four today. And
I think there's some money to be had there, some
nice big field, some prices, so we'll see what we
can do. Yeah. I was kind of reading about the
Northern California thing myself, and one benefit will be, you know,
I mean if we're having six horse fields, say a
twelve five claimer, and we have a ten horse field
(54:31):
because you've bought a lot of these cheap horses in
I think a lot of fans will say, you know,
I kind of like the big field, even though they're
really cheap.
Speaker 11 (54:40):
Yeah, I agree, And you know, we'll see how many
of those races get carted and what that means. But
that absolutely should be a factor. I don't know what
they're going to try to stretch it to Thursday, but
if they don't, then yes, I think we should see
at least two races a day Friday and Saturday that
(55:00):
have dramatically increased field sizes, which is what players want.
So that should happen and that that is a plus.
So I'm glad you brought that up. But absolutely that
is the case, no question.
Speaker 13 (55:15):
I would like to see though, as far as those
machines go. I'd love to see one of the casino,
one of the you know, big Indian casinos, say Yamabah,
because it's the closest one and they're kind of big
time with all the entertainment. Have them maybe buy into
the track or maybe have some kind of a licensing
deal where they can put the machines on and they
split the take.
Speaker 11 (55:36):
Well, they have to see that's the thing that's that's
that word exclusivity that they got built into their deal.
They run the show. So anything that you know, Santa
Anita is going to try with these machines. They have
to figure out how to either partner with the tribes
(55:59):
or try to go behind their back. And you know,
I don't know, but they have to. There's just no,
there's no two ways about it. We are in a
different place here with you know, legislatively, how you have
to do these things when it comes to gambling. Because
Schwarzenegger gave them the whole banana, and now that they've
got it, they don't want to give it away. Nobody would,
(56:21):
So yeah, that's that has to be worked out. That
is probably the biggest hurdle and the one thing that
everybody is focused on is trying to figure out how
to make that happen. They have had quite a few
partnerships in the past and I would guess that's the goal.
But it has to work out for everybody, no question.
Speaker 13 (56:38):
Hey, before I hit the pick, just one thing on
the big card on Thursday, mathis Mott the Grade two
Maths Mile. I think it's very competitive. You have a
simple horses that are exiting the Hollywood Derby the Grade
one and those include King Gosford who just loves the
track of the turf course. There you have Adeline who's
also been an achiever, a perfect one for one there.
(57:00):
But the one I think we'll get a little attention
and maybe fly a little under the radar is stay Hot.
Stay Hot is really a mile specialist. He's three for
four in a mile and he hasn't run in a
mile in a while. He's also three for five locally.
And Peterton brings Jan Hernandez back and lately they're five
for six, so that's eighty three percent, so that's kind
(57:22):
of hard to beat. So I think Stay Hot might
be the third or fourth choice there and might be
some value.
Speaker 11 (57:28):
Yeah, he's a nice horse. Look for those mile specialists.
I mean it's a particular distance and he seems to
be one of those. So all right, Stay Hot. Race
nine on Thursday the matthis Brothers Mile, which is a
very competitive race three year olds only on the grass.
All right, golf Stream Race seven.
Speaker 13 (57:47):
Correct, Yeah, it's a twenty five thousand dollars optional claimer
and some news here. The favorite of the race, here's
the kicker with the rad orchiz from Saffie Joseph has
been scratched out of the race. So that means I've
redone the trifecta and that redone trifecta has been posted.
So if you went in early, go back and get
(58:08):
the new version or you'll hear it right here, so
you don't really have to. But the favorite right now
is number three. Done enough Tyler Gaffleioni rides for Kent.
Sweezy certainly has shown some speed in stakes. Gets lasix
today certainly deserving favorite with the scratch of the original favorite,
but the one I like is up top number one
(58:28):
Personal Choice, A Personal Choice got started and a maiden
claimer they got away with it and then went into
a twenty thousand dollars optional claimer just aired in both
cases eight and a quarter five and a half lines
barely been headed at all, And I just think Personal
Choice working very well for her return today. And with
the favorite gun, I think she might have a lonely lead.
Speaker 11 (58:50):
Yeah, she drew the rail, has the speed to get
out of there. The only knock I guess would be
she's been off six months, so something happened. But the works,
at least on paper, indicate that she looks like she's
ready to roll and does have a speed edge on
this group.
Speaker 13 (59:08):
And that trifecta real quick. It's a dollar tri effecta
one with two three seven with two three seven, and
a fifty cent trifecta one with two three seven with all,
one with all with two three seven, two three seven
with one with all, and two three seven with two
three seven with number one Personal Choice. Nice wind bet
on Personal Choice New Diamond is one of those three,
and that's a nice long shot that could ring up
(59:29):
the register at a big price.
Speaker 11 (59:30):
There we go gall Stream Park. You got the full
card all over it. That was RaSE seven, the one
personal choice Jay. Happy holidays to you, sir, and to
everybody listening. That there from Jay and Steven Bruno. You
heard it. Have a great holiday season and mock him
dead on opening day at Santa Neia. We'll talk to
you next.
Speaker 5 (59:48):
