Yeah, yeah, Hey, good morning.
Speaker 7 (03:47):
I am Jason Levine. This is Inside Racing. It's December
twenty eighth, twenty twenty four, at the end of the
year here. I hope everybody had a great Christmas, having
a happy Hanukkah, spend some time with family, having a
good time. We had a good time last night at
the Clipper game, one of these Clippers oh Man anyway,
(04:10):
having fun there and had fun on opening day at
Santa Anita. I just did a lot of people, so
definitely going to talk about that. That was that was
really good to see. We got good racing out there
today at Santa Anita. You heard the spot probably right there.
A couple of future races. The Blue Northern for two
(04:31):
year olds goes his race eight. Joe Hernandez, legendary race caller,
Hillside turf race name for him, goes his race six.
On a ten race card ten eleven eleven race card
San Anita. No, it's ten ten races. Ten races at
(04:52):
Santa Anita. Sorry about that.
Speaker 8 (04:54):
Great race place.
Speaker 7 (04:57):
Post eleven thirty today eleven the race card San Anita.
Also a nice card at Gulfstream. Another nice card at
Oaklawn Park. We'll talk about that as well as Steve
joining me, then Bruno, then Jay regular crew ready to roll,
closing out twenty twenty four, getting ready for twenty twenty five.
(05:20):
All right, let's see. Well, I got to start with
opening day at Santa Anita. Huge crowd and the crowd stayed.
My experience has been a lot of people come for
the calendar, leave after two or three races. That didn't
really seem to be the case. A few days ago
they announced over forty thousand and there were a lot
(05:43):
of people there all day long. It was really fun.
Speaker 8 (05:46):
It really felt good.
Speaker 7 (05:47):
You could feel the energy all day. There were people
everywhere you went. Paddock clubhouse, you know, regular seats infield
was crowded, so really cool vibe and just just love
to be part of that. Again, we don't get that
very often, couple times a year, so let's hoping that
would be the case. And it was special guest at
(06:08):
the racetrack on Thursday was Missus Race and Jason has
not made many appearances recently, been doing this for a
long long time, and she just kind of faded away
for a while. But I said, come on, it's opening day,
Come out with me. Let's let's do it like we
used to. I said, okay, good, we'll go for the
last four or five races, which we did. You should
(06:30):
know that our history with the track goes back to
one of our first dates, where of course I took
her to the racetrack because she had told me she
had been many times and was kind of interested. So
there we were, and we happened to hit an exacta.
I think we only saw three or four races that day,
and we hit it exactly with a horse name Real Quiet.
(06:50):
It was an allowance race. He was a two year
old Real Quiet and opine, and we hit the exact
very nice payoff and lo and hold go. Quiet ended
up being a pretty good horse won the Kentucky Derby.
So we have a pretty fun history there. Still joke
about that. So I said we have to we have
(07:10):
to capture that today. She said, okay. Anyway, long story short.
First race we see as the Malibu. She picks out
the winner in the paddock, Raging Torrent. So I like
Raging Torrent. We saw him in the paddocks. Oh he
looks good, and he did look great. He went out
and won impressively Stronghold also looked very good in the Pattock.
He ran a big second, we hit the winner and
(07:33):
the exactness that we were off and running. I have
to give Bruno some credit. He had really good information
on both of those horses. I know he hit the
exact cold nailed it one quick note though, that was
a big swing. And to miss an opening day by
announcer Frank Miramadi, who is a very good race caller,
but he missed it. He called Raging Torrent off the turn.
(07:56):
But then when Raging Torrent took the lead and top
of the stretch, he said it was Stronghold. And that
confused me because I was watching the race very closely
and I knew it wasn't a Stronghold, but when a
good race caller says it is, you kind of you
know go what? So I was confused for a good
five or six strides and then finally he caught himself
and changed the call. So not great on opening data
(08:20):
to miss one that badly, but we'll give him a
pass anyway. Fast forward to the Librea and she looks
at the program, picks out a couple of horses by
their name, has an idea what she wants to do.
I said, no, we need to see the horses. I
want to see him three year olds. Come on, she's okay, fine,
we'll go to the paddock. We go to the paddock,
stand on the rail, total silence. All the horses come around.
(08:43):
If you tell me who you like best after you
see them all, and I'll do the same. So as
they're all walking around, the horse that looked best to
me was number six, Copion, trained by Richard Mandela. She
just looked absolutely like she was so ready to run
neck bode on her toes, just coat gleaming. So I
thought to myself, boy, if she turns around and says six,
(09:05):
you know this could be fun. And so she turns around.
After they walked past us, I said, well, she says,
well we have to bet number six. Okay, Well guess
who I like? She said six. I said, yeah, she
goes God, she looked great. I said, all right, well
six was the longest shot on the board, Copion, So undaunted,
(09:26):
we placed our wagers. Was twenty five to one at
the time, went up to thirty and then went up
to thirty five as the gates opened. And if you
remember the race, you know that copeon tracked the pace,
pulled away and one easily, which thirty five to one
shots do not do very often. So suffice it to
say that missus race and Jason was very excited down
(09:48):
the stretch and afterwards and was the first in line
to cash her ticket. And that was a heck of
a way for us to close out the day before
we headed down to see the Grand So that was
a really nice experience. And you know who needs handicapping, right,
I'd done all the handicapping beforehand, so I was set,
and you know, you go with the visuals sometimes, So
(10:11):
that was really a fun a fun way to close
the day. It's awfully nice to have a huge score
and then walk out not giving it back. You're gone.
So pretty cool opening day for us, really cool, one
of the best I've ever had, and fun to see
some people out there, and just to see a lot
of people out there was great. Really nice to see
Richard Mandela win a big race, especially with a horse
(10:33):
that obviously he took his time with something went wrong
back in April and he had her ready to roll,
had to scratch Tambra, the higher profile entry, but Copion
certainly was more than up to the task. She ran
to her looks. Mystic Dan, the Derby winner, kind of
ran to his looks. He looked kind of dull on
(10:54):
the paddock. People were taking pictures and oh, there's the
Derby winner. But there wasn't that much of a buzz
about him because he did so little after the Derby,
I guess and had run for a while, but he
didn't really run much at all. So we'll see what
happens with him moving forward. They're going Oakland. Good luck
to them. I hope he runs well'd be nice to
have the Derby winner have a good four year old season.
(11:14):
We'll see. It was a very disappointing day for Bob Baffert,
and I have to say that I've said this so
many times on the show, but it is an epic
fail for him to run three, four or five in
the Malibu and not threaten considering that he has like
seventy percent of the horses eligible for that race that
(11:36):
should make it to that race, And kind of the
same thing for the Librea. He did run two, three,
there were no threat to the winner, but again he
had three in each race, none threatened and just you know,
burns out, so many horses. It's sad. And even the
(11:57):
Lafite Pnkai which came earlier formerly the San Antonio for
older horses, he didn't have a runner him, did not
have an older horse in that race. Shows you how
many horses he has burnt out. They're gone. We're talking thirty, forty,
fifty sixty a year gone. Sad and just horrible for
(12:20):
the game in southern California, Horrible for the game in general.
So that happened too. On the plus side, Claude and Pratt,
the best jockey in the country, broke Jerry Bailey's graded
stakes record one with King of Gosford. Mark Ryde went
right to the lead paceless race. He took it over
(12:41):
and held everybody off pretty easily. Fifty six graded steaks wins,
all time record. He went for the record about a
month ago. He realized he had a shot. He and
his agent and they went for it and they got it.
So good for him, working hard and he is such
a good jockey, always has a source in the right spot.
And congratulations to a guy who got to start really
with Richard Mandela. He was the first big trainer to
(13:03):
give Flavor Flavor a shot and look where he is now,
so credit to him. And on that note, I think
we all need to be appreciative here in southern California
of the jockey colony we have, especially riding on the grass.
It is very strong right now. You've got Flavor and Pratt,
(13:23):
best jockey in the country, Frankie Dettori, one of the
best jockeys of all time, still riding an extremely high level,
still very competitive, especially on the grass. Hector Barrios, who
is a phenomenal turf writer. I'm Bertorriespeli also a phenomenal
turf rider. That's four glass turf riders. Then you got
(13:48):
Juan Hernandez and Antonio Frey Soup who were both very
very good on the grass.
Speaker 9 (13:54):
That's six.
Speaker 7 (13:55):
Dario is out here now, Mike Smith is still here,
and there's a few guys under meet that. So it
is a privilege to watch the turf races now because
there is some real riding going on with that group
and they know it, and they're watching each other and
they want to beat each other, and I think that
makes it just a lot more fun. So pretty cool
stuff this meet to look forward to with that group,
(14:17):
especially on the grass, and of that group who do
you think the highest percentage writer is on the grass
for Barrios. Yeah, for the year twenty one percent that
twenty d Tory and recently nineteen, so they're all right there.
But for Barrios to actually win that uh and be
the highest percentage turf shock of that group when he's
(14:39):
writing against that group, extremely impressive. But if you've watched
him for the last couple of years, you know it
he is. Because we've got out here that's going to
be a lot of fun and thank goodness for turf racing,
right it is really saved the game here, especially in
southern California. Today's card to San Anita a good example.
(14:59):
There are five turf races. The field sizes are eleven, eleven, nine, nine,
and eleven, and those are the stakes dirt field sizes
eight seven, seven, six ' nine. That's been the case
for a few years now continues to be. So what
else we got gold today? Pretty full matchup in their
(15:24):
feature race, white A Barrio returns to action and he
has to take on move Fassa, who flopped in the
Breeders Cup. Is a very very talented runner and this
should be a really good race. It's a seven for
a long throwdown the mister Prospector. He was an unbelievable horse.
These are two very nice horses. So looking forward to
(15:44):
a race tennant golf Stream today to see that one.
Race five there is an excellent maiden race. There's a
million dollar colt debuting in there, but it's a tough race,
as it should be. Race seven is a nice maiden
race down there, and Race eight is a nice little
five for a long turf steak for the full field
at gulf Stream. So it's happening down there at Oakland.
(16:04):
Pretty interesting. There's a horse that is following the path
of the great Cigar, And for those of you that
don't remember, Cigar was a pretty good turf horse hit
and then they he ended up running on the dirt
and all of a sudden turned into a superstar and
one of the greats, all time greats because he got
(16:25):
to the dirt, you know, late in his career. Well,
there's a horse named Horace Mann. Well to Moatto began
his career in California on the grass, didn't make much
of a market. Allowance company was kind of failing. Went
to Keenland, failed there on the grass, and then a
race got washed off the grass onto the mud. They
(16:45):
kept him in the race. He won by five and
they thought, huh, all right, well, I guess we'll keep
him on the dirt and try it. He ran a
nice third. They kept him on the dirt. He wired
or feel the Churchill and they said, okay, I think
we're ged this out. And then he won again at
seven furlongs, very impressively. Now he stretches out to a
mile and eighth. So Phil Tomato is a great trainer,
(17:08):
but it just shows you nobody really knows anything in
this game. They were not going to put this horse
on the dirt. He was just going to be an
average at best turf horse. And now here he is
likely the favorite in the feature at Oakland, the tinsel
trying to go a mile on an eighth. If he
can do that, he's going to be a horse to
be reckoned with moving forward here in the older horse division.
So you just never know. Horace Man. We'll see what
(17:31):
happens with him today. They have a nice late pick
four there at Oakland Full Fields. That race is one
of them.
Speaker 8 (17:37):
So a lot going on.
Speaker 7 (17:40):
What else we got mmm hmm, Well let's go to
another guy who nailed the Malibu. Steve Pollock, bring him
on here see what he has to say. Steve, good morning,
Good morning, Jason.
Speaker 8 (17:52):
How are you doing.
Speaker 7 (17:54):
I'm doing very well, doing very well. How about you?
You sound a little gruff.
Speaker 8 (17:59):
Little gloss.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (18:00):
I had a little bit of a battle the last
few days. Feeling much better today. Christmas caught me pretty good.
I was glad that I got my handicapping done, thankfully.
The Santa Anita got those got the PEPs out really early,
and I was I was pretty much done by the
twenty third and kept going over stuff the last couple
of days. But Christmas night.
Speaker 8 (18:19):
I really really went down. And I got to be
honest with you, I was so out of it on.
Speaker 10 (18:25):
That opening day. I slept right through the Malibu. I
had to go back and watch the race again. That
was the only race I missed. But I just I
was sitting here at my desk, had my head down
and slept right through it. So that does happen as
we get over. But definitely coming out of it now
feeling a little bit better. And you know, boy, I
(18:45):
just just what you said about the jocks. We really
what a colony we have right now. For turf riding,
and that's great to see. And I thought we saw
a couple of really really special efforts on the turf.
I know you mentioned some of the dirt races, but
I thought that She Feels Pretty was sensational, and I
didn't think anybody would talk Johanna's great ride Rispoli because he,
(19:09):
you know, the old Rispoli might have tried to stay
inside there, but he knew he had the best horse,
and he just said, I'm going to take my time
and I'm going to move to the outside and pop
out and get stuck. And he did that and Johannes
was able to win pretty easily. And then, boy, she
feels pretty. I don't think she faced much, Jason. That
really looked like a very very soft bunch of California horses.
(19:31):
But she looked pretty special herself. And I think both
of those horses are going to have to be contented
with in Tegas's card next month.
Speaker 7 (19:40):
Oh, no doubt about it. Yeah, you're right about the
field she faced, but that's what you're supposed to do
with the feeld like that when you're really good, is
trounce them. And she did that. I mean, that was
a joke. When he asked her, she just took off
and the race was over. It was no, it was done,
really really impressive and Johannas we talked about it, maybe
that race right there helps him win Turf Horse of
(20:02):
the Year. Right he stretched out, he went a longer distance,
he beat a pretty good field. I don't know, hell
of a year for that horse.
Speaker 10 (20:10):
In those connections, he'd get my vote, Jason. You know,
I went back and watched that Breeders Cup Mile and
prep for this race, and you know, in the Breeders
Cup Mile, Jason, he really just never got to get over.
And I know how good Rispoli is at riding the
Delmark Turf Course, and he knows it. I mean, he
knows what he's got to do. He just couldn't get
over enough. And I think at the end of the day,
(20:32):
if he would have been able to save some ground,
the horse that won that race was spectacular, I think
he would have been right there with him. And I'm
not saying he would have won that race, but I
sure wish you could have gotten a little cleaner trip
down there. And who knows, maybe he can come back
next year and redeem himself. I'm sure, that's going to
be the ultimate goal is to win that that Breeders
Cup mile at the end of the season. And you know,
(20:52):
who knows, maybe the Europeans will send an a team
this year, but because they certainly didn't last year. But
you know, you got to give you'll have us some credit.
He looks like the best California horse we've certainly had
in maybe a decade.
Speaker 7 (21:07):
Jason, Yeah, on the grass. In quite a while, we've
been kind of asking for a horse like him, and
he showed up. So pretty cool and good for them
for you know, keeping them going and having him ready
after the Breeders Cup to run a nice race like
that on an opening day and kind of cap off
a really phenomenal season for him. So yeah, that was
(21:27):
that was fun to see as well. It was really
one day out there Opening day. Nice to see that
many people out there. Obviously will not be the case
there tomorrow, but it's going to be nice out there,
so make your way out if you can. It's a
pretty good card, like we said, starts at eleven thirty.
There is a horse named Ditty in the first race,
ridden by Frankie Dettori, So if you're interested in that
you like that kind of thing. There's also a horse
(21:48):
named Cananny in race five today, not ridden by Julio Kannanny,
who's not with us anymore. So that's happening in addition
to everything else that's going on out there. But oh boy,
So of those jocks that I mentioned, you have any
preference there. They're all awfully good on the grass. I mean,
(22:08):
you feel pretty good we've got any one of those
top six on your horse, and if you have somebody else,
you're in a little trouble. I think we've talked about that.
But if you don't have one of those six, you're
probably going to get beat by one of them.
Speaker 10 (22:22):
Well, if it's a closer, it's Burios, you know. I
think that these other guys, in fact, I would almost
take anyone to the other four that you mentioned. They
are even five. I think you mentioned six total, right, Yeah,
I think that would take any one of the other five,
believe it or not, on a speed horse. And I'm
not saying Barrios isn't good on a speed horse. I
just think his strength is coming from behind on a closer,
(22:45):
getting him to get to the inside and save ground,
and then timing that close perfectly like he does and
just being able to save ground, maybe even a little
better than Pratt and Chris Boley, who I would put
a very close second, but that hector on any closer.
And uh, you know some of these other guys maybe
(23:05):
a little bit better in the front, like you mentioned
Mike Smith. I don't think Mike is particularly good under
certain circumstances. But you put Mike Smith out of the
front on the turf and he's as good as any
so especially if there's money on y To Torri is
actually probably a little bit underrated on the on the
front end. And I've been incredibly impressed with how good
(23:25):
to Tory is in a sprint race. It's just incredible
how he gets his horses to seemingly run a little
better if there's a jockey change to him. I'm looking
two or three times in these shorter races. But you know,
we really have some talented runners for sure for riders,
and you know Jan Hernandez probably the last guy I mentioned,
but he's just there time after time on the turf,
(23:47):
and we we really got that top six is is
very very good.
Speaker 7 (23:52):
Yeah, it really, it really is total wins for the
on the grass Lobby and Pratt one hundred. You want
one hundred races on the turf this year, Respoling Verto
recently went eighty six, Hernandez and Frasue seventy seven, Verio
sixty four to Toy sixty. So those are the totals.
They don't really mean that much. Some guys write a
(24:13):
lot more than others, but pretty interesting to see that.
And the percentages, like I said, very very close among
those top six guys, all between sixteen and twenty one percent,
so solid, very very solid. What else we got, well,
anything else you're thinking about. Look to me like you
(24:34):
needed to be there on the dirt again at Santa
I needed no surprise, but coming off the turn on
the dirt, you needed to be on the lead or
very close to it. And that's usually the case, so
it was. It was also the case opening day, and
I think we can usually expect that to be the case.
Out there.
Speaker 10 (24:52):
Speed was king, that's for sure. Speed was good the
first day. I thought yesterday you could come off the
pace just a little bit, and I thought with the
big your fields on opening day that being outside was
a little bit better than being inside. But nothing, nothing
out of the ordinary. If I could say. One thing
I did see on the turf course is that the
deep closures were really not closing like they do early
(25:15):
in the meat usually you see these horses come from
further back, and the first two days being up close
on the grass has really been important. We've had six
one mile races, one one wire to wire, four by
horses second or third or within two lengths after the
first pace call. So five out of six, Jason, have
been right there. The only hill race we had was
(25:35):
one wire to wire even the mile and an eighth
races that we've had one off, one just off the pace,
and one off the pace, so really been tactical. Speed
has been very important on the grass.
Speaker 7 (25:47):
All right. Well that's something to keep an eye on.
The turf course did look great. It should this time
of year, and it did, so that's good. All right,
Well you want to jump in, you've got a race today.
There were a few to choose from, and you ended
up on the grass and you're actually going to kick
off the card with the eleven thirty am opener.
Speaker 10 (26:09):
Yeah, that's important, Jason. I did have my I did
have the TV on early and did see the opening
race opening day, which was a crazy race because a
twenty to one shot one and I think paid eight
nine dollars. That was kind of crazy.
Speaker 8 (26:26):
This race here. I'm sorry.
Speaker 7 (26:31):
That was possibly the worst warning line anybody's ever put up. Yeah,
that was that was pathetic.
Speaker 8 (26:41):
That just wasn't great.
Speaker 10 (26:42):
I yeah, that that horse should have been six or
eight to one, I think, and you know, FORRSE was
six or eight to one, maybe wouldn't have paid that.
I think sometimes on these twenty to ones, you know,
I get excited. I got excited about that horse being
twenty to one, and you know, I saw some real
real things to like about that horse. And uh, you know,
(27:04):
it's just you know, Jeff's knew it doing this. I
hate to say it, but he's really he's struggling a
little bit, and I think it's a tough job. I'm
not saying that I could do any better. You know,
we had that was really good at it for a
number of years and maybe three times maybe it'll turn.
Speaker 7 (27:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (27:19):
John white Wash was just just.
Speaker 7 (27:24):
Talked about it a lot over the years, but he
just was really really good. Jeff Siegel so far, No,
and you can't miss by that much, you can't. I mean,
opening race of the meat too. Oh, that's just I
don't know, I don't know, that's bad. That's just that's
(27:47):
just bad.
Speaker 8 (27:48):
So I felt bad for you.
Speaker 7 (27:49):
I know you liked the horse. I saw the early
money and and uh, I think we all knew twenty
was wrong.
Speaker 10 (27:54):
But anyway, good pick. I think Jay liked the horse too, Jason.
And then you know, it's really tough for us doing
it in advance. When we like at twenty to one
that goes off at seven to two, it might not
be the right play in the race. I mean, just
because you know, we're liking it because we're seeing value,
thinking this horse is at least going to go off
at nine or ten to one when they're that far off,
(28:17):
and you know, and like you said, after the fact,
it was like wow, you know, this horse has been
facing even facing the best printers in the country, and
it was all of a sudden, you know, entered and
entered for a tag. I mean, it just was a
completely different level of horse and it really looked like
he had the early speed to get clear and he
did and one for fun.
Speaker 7 (28:35):
So yes, he did. It won like a twenty sor anyway,
all right, we'll move, we'll move off of that. It
was a good pick for you to start start the meat.
It's unfortunate the way that played out with the odds,
et cetera. But it was a good way to start
with a winner. So we'll just go with that and
uh and let's go.
Speaker 8 (28:55):
On crazy opening day. Jason. My horse is either won
or scratched. That was That was the topic.
Speaker 10 (29:02):
I had two horses I believe in the in the Libre.
I gave out two top horses in that race because
I couldn't decide between them, and neither one of them
even ran. Yep, So a lot of scratches, which was
really a shame for the players. If there was a negative,
it was the scratches because those scratches really did affect
the field.
Speaker 8 (29:19):
And they were late too late hour of the meat.
I wish the prices were a little better.
Speaker 7 (29:24):
Yeah, that was a lot of chalk, especially late in
the card.
Speaker 8 (29:27):
There it happens.
Speaker 7 (29:28):
All right, Well, let's kick off today like you kicked
off the meat with a winner. You like a horse
today in the first race again, eleven thirty first post.
This is a mile on the grass for maidens two
year olds. The rail is at ten feet.
Speaker 10 (29:44):
Jason I'm a little excited about this race because I
think we can hit the big exotics in this one,
take a little swing at the trifecta in this one.
But we're going to key the two horses in here,
and that is a horse named Parl number two. Parl
ran one time broke from the rail at Delmar, which
is a good jaw and a five furlong race unless
you do what this horse did, and that is to
break really slow. And it's interesting it said lacked room upper.
(30:08):
I thought this guy had run the entire race, this
two year old Philly and never got a chance to
show it until after the wire. Really really look like
a horse that even has more speed than that. And
I just think that this horse may be overlooked a
little bit by the crowd with some with some stiff
other competition. But we're going to use that stiff competition
here and play the trifectave and I think Parl is
(30:30):
going to do better second time out. Very good pedigree
top and bottom for a mile on the turf, and
certainly good connections in here. John syth In a jockey
that you know, Jay had mentioned Vince and Chinaman before
when he came out here, very very good. The guy
rode a couple of races really well and now he's
out here today and I think he's certainly on a
(30:51):
contender in here that should really improve second out, the
One Word to Remember has the pedigree to like the turf,
has shown really good speed and speed's going to do
well in this race. I'm really hoping Parl will show
more speeds second time out. Can't break like that again
today and I think if that horse does, we can
get a good.
Speaker 8 (31:08):
Trip second or third behind the one Ward to Remember.
Speaker 10 (31:10):
The four CPO is clearly the horse to beat. Been
facing tough for horses and stakes competition, and definitely that
is the horse to beat. I got two other prices.
One is the ten muscled who I think is heading
in the right direction a pretty decent effort last time,
and that is a big rider upgrade when you go
to Rispoli from anybody, although many Finko is certainly capable,
(31:31):
but to me, I think Raspoli just fits the turf
races out here much better. And got to throw in
the outside horse Star Joe. Based on what you just said,
who's riding the biggest price horses and it's Hector Burrios
twenty to one shot to open up the car. Let's
get him in the trifecta here as well. So I'm
gonna use the two parl. I'm gonna play this one
to win. I'm gonna use one four to ten and
(31:51):
eleven in the trifecta. Will play the two first and
second in the try with those four. That'll cost us
twenty four dollars if you do it for a dollar.
Don't forget about the exactly buses there. It's the two
parl in race one out of Saleeda today.
Speaker 7 (32:05):
Yeah, the one for ten and eleven, the eleven Stargel.
I don't know if it was named for Willie Stargel maybe.
I believe was the first person to ever blast the
ball completely out of Dodger Stadium, and he did it twice.
Pops Stargel. I know I copied that swing growing up.
He had that very unique way of wheeling the bat
(32:28):
uh and then and then delivering.
Speaker 8 (32:30):
That was incredible.
Speaker 10 (32:31):
I love that that little style, that little hitch he
had that was able to watch.
Speaker 7 (32:36):
That was and then he would just crush him. As
a met fan, man, that guy killed me for like
fifteen years. So he did and when he came up,
it was like, oh no, not this guy. And then
he ten wheeled that bat and then bam. So maybe
Burrios can get us a little bam here at a price.
Underneath it's the it's the two with one four to
(32:57):
ten eleven to kick off the card here at sant
Anita today for you, Steve, Steve, Happy New Year. Next
time we talk it will be twenty twenty five. Go
get him today and tomorrow.
Speaker 8 (33:09):
Hight Jay soon. I'm looking forward to it. Today.
Speaker 10 (33:11):
Everybody, have yourselves a great day out there, and we'll
look forward to talking everybody next week in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 7 (33:17):
All right, very good Steve Pollock doing his thing. I
know there's a few other races he likes.
Speaker 8 (33:21):
Quite a bit. Today out there.
Speaker 7 (33:23):
We got Bruno de Julio coming up on the other
side right after the break, followed by Ja free Lander,
which is inside racing. I am eleven to fifty.

Speaker 7 (36:21):
Man, here we go the Chill of Winter. Did a
little LA music for you today. You heard the Doors
with the all time great LA bands. Here's another one,
Lost Lobos. They're still going strong too. We got a
couple more coming for you, including a surprise later in
the show for bands that came from La Local. All right,
(36:45):
where are we at? Ah, let's just jump right into
mister de Julio Bruno. Good morning.
Speaker 9 (36:52):
I have a pressing question for you.
Speaker 7 (36:55):
Okay, I have no idea what it is, but I'm ready.
Speaker 9 (36:59):
When is his racing Jason getting her own show?
Speaker 7 (37:04):
Oh? You'd want to listen to that one.
Speaker 9 (37:11):
You know, anybody that can go to the pad I
can take horses and pike at thirty five to one shot,
and that aren't it?
Speaker 8 (37:17):
It was aome you scored.
Speaker 7 (37:20):
Man. It was so funny because you know I watched him,
and I'm standing behind her, and as they passed by,
I thought to myself, boy, if she turns around and
says six, you know, that would be something else.
Speaker 6 (37:32):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (37:32):
And literally at that exact second, she turned around, looked
at me and said it's the sixth.
Speaker 8 (37:40):
So yeah, it was.
Speaker 7 (37:41):
That was pretty funny. And you know, to know that
it was Richard Mandela that sealed the deal. We were
going to bet it anyway, but you know, he's as
good as it gets, so that was that was kind
of a bonus. But yes, that was really fun. Those
things don't happen too often, but when they do and
they work out like that, then you've Yeah, then you're
(38:03):
just kind of thinking thinking the racing gods and uh,
you know, and getting out of there with as much
money as you can. So yeah, that was really an
opening day treat. For sure. She doesn't get up early
enough to do a show though, so that's not gonna happen.
Speaker 9 (38:17):
Well, the one thing I do have to give you
a ton of credit for you didn't screw that up.
Speaker 7 (38:23):
You know.
Speaker 8 (38:24):
Yeah, that's a good point.
Speaker 11 (38:26):
You would have had to dress, if you would not
have if you would have poot pooed on the idea
of the six. Yeah, you would have heard it probably,
but then until the next time she went to the track, I.
Speaker 7 (38:38):
Would have heard the rest of my life. I mean,
that's just just if you know my wife that that
would never have gone away. But yes, there were a
lot of ways.
Speaker 9 (38:48):
Uh and luckily I know that, and I know that
from experience.
Speaker 7 (38:53):
Uh huh. So oh yeah, we've all all come on,
that horse is thirty to one, forget it. Yeah, and
we'll put show. Yeah, I'll give you maybe we'll do
five the show. But there's other better horses. Come on. No, no, yeah,
you're right, Yeah, you're you're right.
Speaker 8 (39:11):
You didn't screw that up.
Speaker 9 (39:12):
It's a good job, Jakes.
Speaker 8 (39:13):
That's exactly right.
Speaker 7 (39:14):
Just don't screw it up. That's really kind of the
key to life, right, just don't screw it up.
Speaker 9 (39:19):
You know, we have a saying one of my one
of my main staff members, she's like my office manager
with Racing Arbrito Amy Kerns, and she's from a racing background.
She works with Stone Street and Jess Jackson. And you know,
you've got to say it, and I'm gonna bring that
(39:41):
onto everybody when you're playing the races, don't be an idiot.
Speaker 7 (39:47):
That's the first cousin that don't screw it up exactly.
Speaker 9 (39:51):
Yeah, they're pretty tight. You know. So now you mentioned,
you mentioned you had some bunch of stuff that you
mentioned that was really cool.
Speaker 7 (40:00):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (40:00):
The turf riders here in southern California. You know, you
kind of are stealing and giving away the way I
look at turf races here in California or anywhere across
the country, and for example, I will look at like
in today's fifth race, I will look at who's writing
(40:21):
on the who's riding where For example, you've got Flavian
Pratt that I automatically follow at Saratoga or any other racetrack.
You've got Barrios, Uh, Juan Hernandez as you mentioned, Barrios
is on the eleven Spearfish in the fourth race. The
race I'm going to look at, Uh, Flavia Pratt shows
(40:44):
up for John Sadler on number four Concord Bridge. And
one thing that I do that I always look and
what I had on these horses in the morning in
the past, So I pulled up for fun, I went
and pulled up Concord Bridge, and what I had when
during the summer at Del mart and I like almost
(41:05):
every one of his drills between July twenty second and
August eighteenth, I liked. There was five drills and I
liked every single one of them. I played him that
day when he ran at Del mar I believe they
ran him in on August twenty second and on the dirt,
and he ran a tiring fifth. I love him in
(41:28):
the spot.
Speaker 8 (41:28):
Here for fifty.
Speaker 9 (41:30):
You know, he puts Pratt on, he's looking to get
a win and hopefully of maybe a claim and he's
sitting on the board at four to one. Then we
had a four star work on him on December ninth
when he worked with a delightful Laura out of the
gate and showed a lot of speed and kept going
and you know, won the drill by eight lanes, but
(41:55):
it just finished full of energy. I really think this
horse is going to move up on the grass and
especially in the maiden claiming field. As now, some of
these these three year olds are going to turn four,
and if you know, if they're four year old now.
Speaker 8 (42:09):
They're going to turn five, souh there.
Speaker 9 (42:12):
There isn't a whole lot more you can do with
them unless they're going to be great at stakes horses.
So I can see some of these people dropping their
older maidens down to try to get a win and
get him into the program with with winners and get
him in an allowance trace and things like that. So
at the number four Concord Bridge with who I think
(42:32):
should be the Eclipse Award winning jockey this year, no question,
no question.
Speaker 7 (42:38):
I mean breaking the record too. That'll that'll convince some
of the idiots on the East Coast. And I and
I mean that when I say that, you know, but
they got to see him at Saratoga too, so there's
no excuse now. But it's he wins the Eclipse this year.
He deserves it, he earned it. Uh. And he did
it back there, which according to some of those people
you have to do to prove it to them. Uh.
(42:59):
So he did it and uh and yeah he's uh,
he's at the top of his game right now.
Speaker 9 (43:05):
So yeah, you got you know, one more point on
you mentioned how Richardondela gave Flavian pride start really on
the East Coast. If Chad Brown starts using you on
the grass religiously, you know he's got talent. There's certain trainers,
(43:25):
you know, when you you know, Bafford is very streaky
with writers. Plutcher, he sticks with what Irad and Louis
Sias And if you watch Plutcher on the East Coast,
Irad almost gets first call on everything, you know, and
and Saiah.
Speaker 8 (43:42):
So if you.
Speaker 9 (43:43):
Really want to know the talent level of a job,
you look at certain trainers and how they use those jocks.
And and if Chad Brown goes to Saratoga at Saratoga
goes to Slavian Pride with his big horses, you know
that Flavian Pride is at the top of at the
top of that list that people want to get on
the grass. And he's just as good on the dirt.
(44:04):
So yes, you know, So that's that's a really good point,
and it's a really good handicapping point that sometimes can
cut through a lot of handicapping to.
Speaker 8 (44:13):
Go through that for those days.
Speaker 7 (44:16):
Yeah, and it's interesting he steps up there for saddler. Again,
we're talking about Race four Maiden fifty and this this
horse costs eight hundred and fifty thousands, so they're obviously
pretty disappointed here, and you think they're trying to sneak
them through for fifty or they don't care if somebody.
If somebody grabs them, they get the win.
Speaker 9 (44:36):
Well, I think you know, when you spend eighth and
fifty on them and there isn't going to be much
of a I mean, he's going to be a four
year old, So they're not They don't have much very
they don't have very many options left. So if they're thinking, hey,
you know what if we can win a race and
and win and lose them for fifty, you know, make
(44:57):
room for the for the two year olds later on
in the spring.
Speaker 7 (45:00):
Yeah, it's a yeah, a big part of the game.
You got to make those decisions. And they made that
decision today. Okay, fine, we'll drop them in. Uh so
the four Concord Bridge off that four star work. You
had some nice works on a couple of the horses
opening day, Raging Torrent and Stronghold Booth had really really
nice works. And that you had them one too. They
ran one too. They ran to their works. Both very
(45:22):
nice horses and both look like they're going to have
a big year next year too.
Speaker 9 (45:27):
And and if people listen, then when are we talked
about Ben Tornado?
Speaker 8 (45:30):
I loved him in the Breeders Cup.
Speaker 9 (45:32):
I wasn't so sure I wasn't sold because of those
fast works, and a lot of people get stuck on that.
They get stuck on those fast works as they mean something,
as they mean good form, and they sometimes they don't.
Speaker 8 (45:47):
You know anybody, They just follow fast works.
Speaker 7 (45:49):
You know.
Speaker 9 (45:51):
Those horses are not as as strong as you think
they are.
Speaker 7 (45:55):
No, and he scratched right, So you were, you were,
you were on top of that one breeders up was
the day for him, and they were obviously pushing him,
you know, to get another race in, to get that
Malibu in and uh and you know, one way or
the other. The horse said, no, you're pushing me, and
I'm not right.
Speaker 9 (46:13):
Yeah, he had a bad foot, and I think they
when they took the shoe off because they felt like
there was probably something there, they found that he had
an access on one of it on a foot, So
excuse me, sorry, but and that's what happens sometimes when
(46:36):
the sources work really fast. The trainer was trying to
shape the cobwebs on them. He's going to say, I
can't figure out what's wrong, you know, so but anyway,
by the way, I don't want you to fall asleep
and pull a Steve Pollock on Oakland's eighth race today,
Please don't fall asleep on the number twelve and and
(46:58):
and all of you can say with say yeah at
five to one if you go with look at I'm
sorry for my voice real quick. I don't know what
happened here. But if you look at the post positions
statistics for Oakland.
Speaker 8 (47:18):
Most people don't know.
Speaker 9 (47:19):
But do you know who the high highest percentage post
position at Oakland is right now sprinting?
Speaker 7 (47:27):
I'm gonna guess it's on the outside.
Speaker 9 (47:29):
Yes, it's the tent hole at twenty one percent.
Speaker 7 (47:34):
That's high.
Speaker 9 (47:34):
But if you you know, you get, you get the
nine ten to eleven post. The twelve post is over ten,
But that can be an anonymaly because the.
Speaker 8 (47:44):
Outside horses have been running really, really well.
Speaker 9 (47:46):
If you're looking at fifty nine, let's say I'm doing
and doing it, and this in my head seventy three races,
twelve winners from the ninete ten to eleven and seventy
three races.
Speaker 7 (47:59):
Out of six sixteen percent. Yeah that's good.
Speaker 8 (48:01):
Yeah, that's very good.
Speaker 9 (48:03):
So I kind of take that, oh for ten and
twelve furlarms is an anomaly and throw that out and
you've got the twelve horse in here once again, everybody
say say cheese with a four star work on December fourteenth,
working with a with a well, let's and I really
(48:23):
like this horse of the spot, even though the assay
folsts don't knock it for start work. Everybody say it,
say cheese.
Speaker 7 (48:33):
Ricardo Santana Junior. For I don't trust guys who go
with the first initial though, D Whitworth Beckham, come on, man, just.
Speaker 8 (48:40):
Be with Beckham.
Speaker 7 (48:43):
You know, I'm from the water Goods generation.
Speaker 11 (48:45):
He's doing good.
Speaker 8 (48:48):
He's doing really well.
Speaker 7 (48:49):
I know, but come on, G Gordon Liddy, E, Howard Hunt,
don't don't do the first initial thing.
Speaker 9 (48:54):
It's anyway d Wayne Lucas.
Speaker 7 (48:57):
What did he ever accomplish? Point? He was good to
me as a young as a young writer. So I
always give d Wayne a lot of credit. He understood
the power of the press and getting good publicity for
himself in the game. And uh, and you know he
certainly did that with me and I appreciate it to
this day. So, uh, that's a good first initial. So
(49:18):
it's the same one.
Speaker 8 (49:18):
It's D. So we'll go with d Whitworth Beckham here.
So the twelve say.
Speaker 7 (49:22):
Cheese five to one on the morning line. I think
in this race you'll get that there's some other horses
that are going to get bet here. This first has speed,
third off the wayoff and off that work. Ready to
roll here, anybody with them or just just straight up on.
Speaker 9 (49:35):
The twelve, I'm going to use him with the one
brunch punch and the eight outrageously. And I just love
saying this, and everybody just say say cheeze.
Speaker 7 (49:47):
All right on that note, we're gonna let you go, said,
who said cheese?
Speaker 8 (49:53):
Enough?
Speaker 9 (49:55):
All right, you guys have a great woman. I'm gonna
go get a dross the water.
Speaker 8 (50:00):
You're good, You're happy to New Year, all right?

Who that's the sweet guitar of local La legend sugy Otis.
This industry was not quite ready for sugar in the
late sixties and early seventies.
Speaker 7 (51:55):
He was Prince before Prince. So if you like that,
like blues guitar you like kind of three key, cool
funk soul. Sugary Otis is someone you need to look up.
His dad was Johnny Otis. He was a legend in
the music business, band leader, and he had a radio
show for many many years that I listened to. That's
where I got turned on to Sugary Otis. But man,
(52:16):
he is awesome, so local LA legend who was just
before his time. I think, all right, real quick, Nira
Bets just got to remind you the code if you
don't have an account is Jason two hundred. To claim
your two hundred dollars deposit bonus and to bet the
big A. You can hit the LA pick five today
(52:36):
and split an extra ten thousand dollars just with other
Nyra bets players. All you have to do is opt in.
So if you're thinking of playing Aqueduct today, or you're
thinking maybe I should now and you liked that late
pick five, take a shot. It's an extra ten grand
for you to split with anybody else that hits it,
and a reminder that they have Nira Bets YouTube now.
Matthew DeSantis does a lot of great work there, so
check out Ira Bets YouTube channel. As well. Okay, where
(53:02):
are we Let's get our man, Jay Freelander, Jacob.
Speaker 8 (53:04):
Morning, Good morning, Jason.
Speaker 7 (53:07):
How are you, sir?
Speaker 8 (53:09):
I'm doing well.
Speaker 14 (53:10):
Yeah, that kind of takes me back. I in college,
I interned on a show called Nothing but the Blues
at Long Beach State, and so I played a lot
of Johnny Otis and Shuggy Otis and Shooky. At one
point was invited to audition for the Stones and he
didn't take them up on it.
Speaker 7 (53:24):
That's that is true. Yeah, that would have been interesting,
really interesting. I don't think he would have. He would
have made it too long with the Stones. They're partying
was pretty off the charts there, so good move by
should be. But yeah, he was awesome. Nothing but the
Blues is still going with Gary the Wagman Wagner eighty
eight point one every Saturday and Sunday.
Speaker 14 (53:45):
Yeah, yeah, it's an institution. But I would have to say,
I'm listening to your comments on the turfphrases going on. Yeah,
Johannas was very impressive. And even though I don't know
that Johannes, you know, beats either of the two breeders
cup Owns on a given day. For consistency. I mean,
he'll have to be in the top three, and who knows.
Steve makes a good point as far as getting the
(54:06):
right trip. If he had gotten the right trip there,
he might have had a chance to be a, if
not beat more than a lot, a little closer to
more than looks than he was. I thought it was
a solid second considering that trip that Steve mentioned.
Speaker 7 (54:20):
Yeah, no, it was.
Speaker 8 (54:20):
He ran huge.
Speaker 7 (54:21):
I mean he ran huge all year, just a just
an amazing year by that horse. And considering the way
the other turf races went in the way the divisions are,
he's got a shot and winning that race, you know,
two days ago I'm with the cherry on the Sunday
for him and stretching out too, so he's not just
a milers. So that was Yeah, that was still unimpressive.
Speaker 14 (54:42):
And on the other end, you know, with the three
year old's kind of still a little up for grabs.
I think Sierra alone, he has a slight edge over
Fierceness for you know, coming up big in the biggest races.
But a lot of people were speculating, hey, Kentucky Derby
winner if he wins two grade ones.
Speaker 8 (54:57):
I thought, but well, mystic mystic dan.
Speaker 14 (55:00):
Never shouldn't have even leftist paddock.
Speaker 7 (55:02):
Yeah, they put them on the van and brought them
out here and that was a wasted trip.
Speaker 8 (55:08):
Nice of them to do it.
Speaker 7 (55:09):
It was nice for people to be able to see
the derby winner and there were a lot of people
taking pictures. But yeah, that was that was just a
complete fail. And now they'll have to go back to
the drawing board and see what happens at Oaklahm.
Speaker 14 (55:20):
So the other extreme real quick, just I wanted to
mention today it's kind of historic. Race two. Today you've
got the first eight thousand dollars claimer from northern California
and drew a field of eight. So I know people
looking forward to that one.
Speaker 7 (55:36):
Yeah, it's it's a new world. But yes, that is
the first eight thousand dollars claimer made in eight Yeah,
here we go. That's today at high noon. All right,
let's jump into your into your picks.
Speaker 8 (55:51):
I know you've got two.
Speaker 7 (55:52):
You got the sixth from Santa Anita, the eleventh from Gulfstream.
Sant Anita race is a steak. You want to start there,
you want to start down in Florida.
Speaker 14 (56:00):
Well we'll hit goal, hit glf Stream pretty quick. We'll
try to beat the favorite number five, Leo Toro, which
is race eleven. It's a mile on the turf optional
claimer Leo Toro not quite as good the last couple
of races, well, at least the one on dirt was
kind of a fail, but the two turf phrases were
okay average speed figures against you know, good allowance sources.
(56:23):
But the one I like is right below number six
Lady Mary. Lady Mary is the winner of the German Oaks.
It's a half a million dollar race.
Speaker 8 (56:29):
Not the winner.
Speaker 14 (56:29):
Came in third but still exits, you know, the best
race easily of these, you know, just decent performance of
the Jockey Club Oaks in Belmont, Belmont at Aqueduct, as
we like to say. And then tried Lady Mary on
the turf here, came on nicely for second and adds
Blinker's day which could close that gap. Licking number six
(56:50):
Lady Mary to take this optional claimber closing out the card.
Speaker 7 (56:54):
All right for the doubt and Abbey fans. Lady Mary
was one of the stars of that show. Nice act
and she did a wonderful job. German Bread. Don't see
too many of them here, and yeah, it did run
well last time a golf Stream over this course and
it's definitely the back class of this race. So the
sixth Lady Mary In Racing Levin at Gaullstream straight up
(57:15):
and then we just go with the exact wheel.
Speaker 14 (57:17):
Back and forth and yeah, well will and we're not
going to throw you out today.
Speaker 7 (57:21):
No once bitten twice shy okay, Lady Mary's Race eleven
at Gulf Stream Park and we'll go to the Joe
Hernandez Rade six down the hill.
Speaker 8 (57:35):
It's an Anita exactly.
Speaker 14 (57:38):
And the case here is can anybody beat the Breeders
Cub Turf Sprint runner up notorious with Antonio Pursue aboard
a furious run here under Frazulia and almost got there
in the Turf Sprint and has been impressive all year,
won the Green Flash at Dolmar before that. But can
anybody knock them off? And I think there's one that
(57:58):
has a shot and that's on the rail.
Speaker 8 (58:00):
That's number one.
Speaker 14 (58:00):
Air Force Red, Air Force Red loves this course five
for fifteen, eight for fifteen in the money. The Rail's
been playing well going down the hill and this one's
been a solid grated stakes competitor all year and into
last year, and one Hernandez on this one. And while
I don't think one is quite in a class with
Flavian Pratt on the turf, I don't think Flavian really
(58:23):
has the horse that's going to be the one here
that's going to be the one to beat. So I
think Flavian doesn't quite have the horsepower on Central Dispatch.
So liking number one Air Force read to pull a
mild upset at nine to two.
Speaker 7 (58:35):
Yeah, Trainer Leonard Powell obviously had this race in mind.
This horse has been given a little time off after
a nice year in twenty twenty four, only one win,
but the two seconds. It's just a very nice horse
now a six year old getting ready to turn seven
and really loves this course. Horse for course for sure.
So the one Air Force read in ray six the
Joe Hernandez coming down the hill exotics.
Speaker 14 (58:57):
Yeah, let's play a trifecta. We're going to cook up
those two, number one and number six maorious. So one
six with one six with all one six with all
one six and all with one six with one six.
Let's play three tickets.
Speaker 7 (59:10):
In case somebody shows up and beats the two of them.
It's Air Force Red and the Joe Hernandez coming down
the hill. Jay has always appreciated. Wishing you a happy
new year. We'll talk in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 14 (59:22):
All right, thank you, Jason.
Speaker 7 (59:24):
Okay, how much time we got?
Speaker 8 (59:27):
Ten?
Speaker 7 (59:27):
Okay, well for Zach running the board and Jay and
Bruno and Steve and missus racing. Jason, I'm Jason Levine,
wishing you a very happy new year, have a great weekend,
and we'll talk to you in twenty twenty five. Go
get them
