And here's your host, Jason Levine.
Speaker 7 (02:43):
Yeah, yeah, all right, good Saturday morning to everybody out there.
It's February. Yeah, I know, we're rocking and rolling here.
I am Jason Levine. This is Inside Racing on AM
eleven fifty. We have a lot to cover today as usual,
(03:03):
jump into February. There's stuff happening, and today a lot
happening on the Kentucky Derby Trail. Pretty early on the trail,
but likely we'll see a couple of horses that run
today in the Derby. If the connections have anything to
do with it, they certainly hope. So we have the
Robert Lewis at Santa Anita. The bob Lewis one of
(03:26):
the great gentlemen of horse racing. You heard the opening
their Serena song. One of his many wonderful horses. She's
still with us. Amazingly, Bob Lewis is not. I was
lucky enough to get to know him very well and
just a genuine good guy. We're lacking those in racing
(03:48):
right now. But his spirit is there and the race
is named after him. So that's a sant Anita for
the three year olds. At Gulf Stream the Holy Bowl
like you have to see run in person a few times. Wow,
what a serious race horse he was. And at Aqueduct
the Withers, which has produced a couple of horses that
(04:12):
have made it into the Derby in the last five
or six years. Tax was in the Derby in twenty
nineteen and the Hit Show was a factor. A couple
of years ago was third with I don't know two
hundred yards to run, ended up fifth, went on to
do some damage as an older horse. So those are
(04:32):
the three three year old races going on. Big day
at Santa Anita. Four Steaks, the Lewis, the Santa Monica,
the Mega Hurts, She Was Great, a Little Tiny Philly
and the thunder Road both a mile on the grass.
Races three, four, six, and eight are the Steaks at
Santa Anita, a ten race car that starts at noon.
(04:53):
Beautiful weather out at Santa Anita today should be gorgeous
out there. I say this a lot, but if you
haven't been recently, go you'll enjoy these quality racing sevens
in the world. Weather it's good.
Speaker 8 (05:08):
That's good news.
Speaker 7 (05:09):
Cold and not great in New York theory, so the
weathers it's on, but it's going to be it's not pretty.
Put it Okay, let's see where are we going to
go from here? Well, in honor of the Bob Lewis, Uh, Well,
(05:30):
today Bob Bafford, who trained for Bob Lewis, has three
of the five runners in the race today named after
mister Lewis. That's terrible. Even worse, all three are owned
by the same ownership group.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (05:48):
They like to give themselves a nickname. You don't get
to do that. So to me there I've called them
a variety of things. Weak, sauce failure to compete. These
are the folks with a ton of money who decid
to kind of pool their money so they could by
fifteen to twenty really expensive horses with the hopes that
(06:10):
two or three or four of them will win big
stakes and maybe one of them will win the derby.
They don't care that backer will ruin you know, ten
of the fifteen before the derby and they'll probably never
run again. It's just the numbers game. It's horrible for
the sport and has helped really kind of flush the
(06:33):
sport down the toilet. But they don't care. So what
can you do when people with a lot of money
don't care and they have a different agenda than what
might be best for the sport. They have a ton
of money to put into the sport. They've just chosen
to do it this way as kind of an investment,
looking to get you know, a stallion, just looking to
(06:54):
win a couple of big races, and not caring about
the help of the horse or the help of the game.
And that's vital here. But we have a lot of
people doing that. So that's one of the reasons the
game is it's fading badly. And in certain places appears
to be on life support. So thanks to those folks,
(07:17):
the Avengers. What a joke. You have to be a
joke to be a wealthy person who jumps into something
and it gives yourself a nickname like you're kicking the
butt or something like you're doing something good. That's one
of the most pathetic things I've ever seen. It really is.
It's just it's just a joke. So screw them. Anyway,
(07:38):
they have three of the five horses today and I thought,
wait a minute, I remember this race last year being
a big deal, and sure enough I looked it up.
You know why it was a big deal because Nicos
was in the race. Remember him. Yeah, Nicos really was
a really nice horse. He'd run twice. He won the
bob Lewis by seven. He was one to nine, so
the race was no fun. He was really fun to
(08:01):
watch and he hasn't been seen since, and that's typical.
He looked like a world beater. He looked like the
best three year old in the country at the time.
He looked like the Derby favorite.
Speaker 8 (08:11):
And that was it.
Speaker 7 (08:13):
And I looked it up and actually he did work
last October once once and then he worked two days ago.
So you know Nios and Baffert teasing us again. I
doubt he can be the same horse being off a year,
but hey, so just in case you were wondering, Nisos
(08:37):
and this is typical of Baffort has had twenty four
workouts in three races. And that's what you have to
do to get these horse primed to run their a
race when they're two year olds or early three year olds.
You have to work the work and work and work them.
Guess what good for the worst, And that's why Nisos
has yet another Baffort that just disappeared. Also, Baffort had
(08:59):
one me up in the bob Lewis who ran second,
then ran second in the San Felipe and hasn't been
seen since. He did work in late September October a
couple of times and then he was done. And Bafford
also had Coach Prime, remember him, he costs one point
seven million dollars by the guy Zidan Racing. Things didn't
(09:27):
go exactly the way he thought one point seven million.
Coach Prime was scratched out of the bob Lewis and
then wasn't seen again until about a month ago when
he worked twice in December and then was done again.
So that's a pretty good example. Is that going to
be what happens to the three Baffords today? Well, that's
(09:48):
what happened last year. It's very possible because that's the system,
that's the program, and he has so many horses, and
frankly he has all of them. Look at the other
two in today's race. One is just in there to
pick up a small check, has absolutely no chance, and
the other is one that chipped in through Wesley Ward.
That's a nice runner, but probably better on the turf
(10:08):
than the dirt. That's it. We are the other three
year olds, there's a few, but they're not running today
in Southern California because Bafford has a stranglehold on them
because the owners just keep giving him the horses as
if these other guys can't train. It's just it's maddening
from a fans and someone who loves the sport and
a horse player's perspective, and maddening. So anyway, that's what
(10:29):
happened last year. Maybe we'll see Nicos this year. I
saw people on Twitter. Oh Nicos is back. Yeah maybe
maybe probably not. Maybe maybe he'll run the met mile
and that's it. Who knows, all right? So that was
last year. This year, yeah, Citizen Bull, he won the
(10:49):
Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He's in the Lewis today, but against
two of his stablemates. And then, like I said, the
Wesley Ward horse, who's fast but again probably better on turf,
we'll see. But he's got to deal with three bafforts,
so good luck to him, right, they're going to gang
up on him. You don't know what the jockeys were
told to do. So it's again, it's not a real race,
and it's just unfortunate. The Santa Monica today, which goes
(11:13):
before the Bob Lewis. The Lewis has raised four. The
Santa Monica has raised three. There's four horses in there.
Last year I looked it up, there were seven. The
four this year three bafforts and Copeon, who beat three
bafforts last time and in fact did it at thirty
seven to one for me, and this is racing, Jason,
if you remember that story on an opening day at
(11:33):
Santa Anita, she picked Copeon out of the paddock as
the one that looked by far the best. I agreed silently.
If you remember the story. So we went and bet Copeon,
who was thirty to one at the time. I went
off at thirty seven to one and absolutely smoked the field.
So she's back and has to deal with three bafforts,
including Hope Road, and then we'll see what happens there. Again,
(11:57):
not much in a betting race, so unfortunate race is
three and four. But Race six the Mega Hurts came up,
a very competitive seven Pillyan Mayor Field, really nice race there,
Siriha Rashmi Mahina good race, race six mile on the grass,
and the thunder Road. Race eight is a nice race.
(12:17):
Seal Team is in there for Richard Mandela dropping in class.
L Potente is in there on a role for Dan
Blacker and Hector Barrios moving up in class, and Air
Force Red is second off the layoff in there as well.
So at least those two are nice stakes races, and
there's some other really good races on the cars. Just
unfortunate that the two big name races came up the
way they did, but that's kind of where we're at.
(12:40):
So what else we got? Oh, Hector Barrios, I'm going
to say it again just because big guy is unbelievable
on the grass. So take a second and third look.
I know some of you are doing that already. For
those that haven't started doing it already, he's beating you
like a drum because he's win and you know about
(13:01):
a one fourth at the time he rides on the grass.
The guy's dominant. He just does everything right. So it's
really phenomenal to watch what he's done the past year
and a half or so and see him continue to
do it day after day after day. Just puts his
horse where they need to be early, usually down on
the rail, and boy, can he finished. His timing is impeccable,
(13:24):
He's strong, and yeah, he gets the job done. So
take a second and third look at Hector Burials. He's
on El Potente in the thunder Road and he's on
Mahina in the Megahurtz and both of them have a
good shot in that race, and with him they have
an excellent shot. Okay. Down in Florida, Holy Bull Day,
(13:46):
The Holy Bull is race eleven the Drew seven. Bruno
is going to come on and join me to talk
about the Holy Bull. I like the two outside runners
in here. Bruno and I are probably going to end
up against each other. I'm not sure, but I like
Burning Glory to six and Burnham Square to seven. They're
both a little bit of a price. Once trained by
(14:06):
Bill Mott, the other by Ian Wilkes. I think both
of them can come from a little off the pace
in the race. It looks like it has a lot
of speed. We'll see. Those outside posts aren't great, but
not that big a field, so we'll see. But the
Holy Bull came up a very nice race. Ferocious is
in there, he's the favorite. I'm going against him going
two turns today, trying two turns again and failed in
(14:29):
the Breeders' Cup there, so it's a good race. We'll
see how it plays out down there again. That's race
eleven on a twelve race card. Tappin Street is in
there for Brad Cox coming off just a very impressive
maiden win, stepping right into the Holy Bowl. But they
do that these days. Guns Loaded looks to have a shot.
Was a D'Angelo. And then there's Burning Glory and Burnham
(14:53):
Square and on the rail kinectic control for the red
hot Dale Romans. You should take a second look at
Dale Romans on a Gulf Stream because his horses are fire.
Not that I ever went on him because they don't.
But Romans who's clearly using ozempic I ain't good for
him whatever, but his horses are really running six for
sixteen so far with four thirds for Dale Romans at
(15:16):
Gulfstream Park. A pretty impressive start for him. Brad Cox
not off to as impressive to start as he usually
is down there. So that's the Holy Bowl. That's RaSE eleven.
Race twelve is the forward gall for three year old Phillies.
They're only going seven furlongs in there. Saffy Joseph has
the favorite in there, not surprising. Prior to that, some
(15:38):
nice races. Race ten the Kittens Joy, wide open field
of eight on the grass for three year olds. Race
nine the Swale had a couple of scratches in there,
but the favorites are still there. And then Race four
The Sweetest Chance scratched the six and seven on there,
but that was a nice two turned turf race for
(15:59):
the Philly. So really good car down at Gulf Stream Park.
A lot of options down there, a lot of quality
and some big fields down there as well. So it's
happening in South Florida. We discussed last week that it
may not be happening for too long in South Florida,
and Belinda Stronik made some comments on television that were
(16:21):
the comments of somebody that has a different agenda than
people in racing would like her to have. And guess what,
she doesn't care. That's the tough part. She does not care.
She wants to do what's best for her and her company,
and that appears to be not racing. So we'll see.
(16:42):
Like we said, they may have three years down there,
they may have less. And Santa Anita, well, we'll see.
We've talked about that a little bit. There's no more
news about anything going on at Santa Anita, so we
can leave that for now. But again, her agenda is
different than yours, let's put it that way, and she
(17:03):
is in control.
Speaker 9 (17:04):
So there we have it, all right.
Speaker 7 (17:07):
Let's see. Well, our man, Steve Pollock, he was fired
up last week. He was ready to roll. He was confident,
and he delivered and that's what we like to see.
And even delivered with one of his old friends, Kent
Desormo I King Apollo paid twenty three dollars flying up
the rail late did a huge exactor. The try came
back almost two hundred and fifty dollars for Steve had
(17:28):
a bunch of bonus races from Gulf Stream on their
good card and Pegasu's card, including be Your Best who
came in and paid sixteen eighty. So well done by Steve,
got paid at both places, and he's back today. He's
got a bonus race of Gulf Stream, and I think
he's got five or six of the races he really
likes today on the Santa Anita card. So let's bring
(17:50):
him on Steve.
Speaker 8 (17:51):
Good morning, Good morning, Jason. Yeah, picked six carry over
around to sant Anita today. And I will tell you
what this is. It's not an easy card to string
races together. My kind of card for individual races. But
tell you what that pick sicks out there. There is
a short price favorite in one of the sprint races
that will be pretty tough to beat. I'll tell you
(18:12):
what if that horse gets beat, that pick stick can't
say anything, and it could even carry over because I
think some of these other races are very very wide open.
Good looking card today for individual races.
Speaker 7 (18:23):
Yeah, I agree, and I know that, Like I said,
there's a bunch you like, but you know that's what
another thing folks have to think about when you're looking
at a card is, you know, can I put races together?
You don't have to, that's the thing. You just got
to kind of go card by card and see how
you feel about it. One of the reasons for the
carryover was a Bob Bafford horse coming out of a
maiden race who for some reason was one to five,
(18:46):
should have been maybe I don't know even money the
best got beat late, ran third, actually didn't even wasn't
even able to hold second in there. So that really
blew things up. And I believe it was your man
who got up again down on the rail, mister that's
going on.
Speaker 8 (19:04):
Yeah, it was, you know, Jason. It's interesting and for
those that are out there that are everyday players, it
does seem like an occasional Friday. We have a closer
race track, and yesterday you could certainly close. There were
horses like the horse at Kent Disormo Road that closed
in a sprint race. And then you get to Saturday
and Sunday and we go week after week after week
where five out of you know, five out of five,
(19:25):
four out of five are won by horses that are
either on the lead or right next to the pacetter
and you get to Friday and again, I think that's
the third one we've had, and you know, we haven't
raced every week, so three Friday's being being slightly closer
or closer tracks. I don't know if they're digging the
track up or something's happening, but it's certainly worth thinking about.
(19:45):
And one of the reasons that I like playing a
race at a time, you know, especially being someone who
came you know, from mostly del Mar where wind whatever
changes the way that track biases. I think Santa Anita
has been speed speeds, beat beat speed like crazy every
Saturday and Sunday. But boy, boy, Friday might be worth
thinking about. Folks, to keep an eye on a couple
of races and if you see something that you like
(20:07):
that can close, maybe do something like that when you're
in the card. Because that sure surprised me yesterday that
Kent Desorma was able to close as much as he was,
because you just haven't been able to do that.
Speaker 7 (20:18):
No, it was nice he was able to do it
last week for you on King Apollo, diving to the
rail and flying through and getting up and again with
Kent we have to say the same thing we always
say is we don't know how long this particular run
is going to last. But happy to have him back,
happy to see him riding well. Super talent who's obviously
(20:41):
still got some of that talent left, and.
Speaker 6 (20:42):
It's capable, there's no doubt about it.
Speaker 8 (20:46):
Jason is very exciting to see. And there's another gentleman
that's in his latter stages of his career that's absolutely
riding as well as anybody out there. And that's how
Franco de Tori. I mean, I just can't say enough
about how confident and how good he looked yesterday. And Jason,
my radio pick is a horse that he's on. But
(21:08):
it's great to see these veteran riders, you know, to
Torri Desormo, get some wins out there and tell you
what they know how to make their way around the
racetrack for short they.
Speaker 7 (21:19):
Do, and it's a huge advantage because, as we've discussed
quite a bit in the last year or two, there's
there's you know, Jock colony, there's a drop off and
there's guys that they can get around the track, but
maybe not the best way or in the right spot
or at the right time. And you know, super talented,
really smart riders have a big edge and it shows
over and over and over again. The Torri was going
(21:42):
to retire, but I think he's He was obviously feeling
so good and winning at such a high rate and
having such a good time. He said, screw it. Why
why would I retire? This is what I do and
I'm still at the top of my game. We're close
enough to it to do damage, and he's doing it,
and more power to him. He's great for the game.
Unlike some of the people I mentioned earlier, He's in
(22:04):
it for the right reasons. He's in it for the game.
He's in it to pump up the game. He's in
it to keep his career going and have a good
time doing it. And if he can bring some other
people into the game and make them smile and have
a good time, he's up for it. So he's the
flip side of some other folks out there who are
just in it for kind of their own bottom line
(22:25):
and don't really care. He's not and really a pleasure
to see and it's fun to have him in Southern California.
As long as he's going to stay or keep this
run going. But when he's on a horse again, you
have to take a second look and say, Okay, how's
he going to play this, Because he's going to play
it the right way. He needs to be on the front.
He understands that, and he's good at it. If he
needs to bring a horse, you know, from four or
(22:45):
five back, he's going to have the horse in the
right spot and he's going to make the move at
the right time. As a player, that's all you want, right,
that's all you can ask for.
Speaker 8 (22:54):
You know, give me my best shot, said of any
better Jason.
Speaker 7 (23:01):
Yeah, that's what he does. And those are the guys
you want. We don't have to name some of the
other guys, but there's other guys. You like the horse
and you're like, all right, well, you know, I really
like the horse, so come on, make it happen for
me here, And you're kind of rolling the dice a
little bit, hoping that they do the right thing and
that they saw the race the right way. So yeah,
(23:21):
that's where we're at there before we go to your
play real quick White a barrio. When he shows up,
especially a Gulf Stream and runs his a race, can't
touch him. He did it last week. We don't know
if he'll do it again, but he did it in
the Pegasus.
Speaker 8 (23:38):
He sure did. Jason coming off with two seven furlong efforts,
did have a trouble trip in the race in his
previous effort, and you know, he came out and showed
up with his a game. Really was a very easy winner.
And I mean, I tell you what, he looked like
a winner down the backside, and he was very very
easy winner. Bruno really liked that horse. So hats off
(24:00):
to Bruno for a nice pick there. And you know,
I'll tell you what, I love the card down there.
But I didn't necessarily hit the races I thought I
was going to hit because I really thought I had
the winner in there. My horse had the easy lead
and and just and just packed it in. So hats
off to White to Barrio. And it'd be interesting to
see where he goes now with the new connections.
Speaker 9 (24:20):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (24:21):
Will they try to gear him up and have him
ready for for a Bree's Cup effort at the end
of the season. Certainly we know when he's on his game,
he's he's that good and uh, and he could certainly
be a player at the end of the year as well.
Speaker 7 (24:33):
Yeah, and we'll see, and we'll see if they send
him over to Dubai. I would assume that's where he's
going next, but you know, we'll wait and see. We'll
find out. He was a little bit of a price
in there because Locke took all the money from the
outside and uh, he did not fire his A game
and you need to have an A plus game if
you're going to beat White a Boreo when he's on
his game. So it was an easy when Mystic Dan
(24:54):
again packed it in early. They don't know what's going
on with the Horst. Kenny McPeak always honest out don't know.
I'm surprised as you folks. It looks great in the morning,
we like everything about it. And then you know, that's
two non efforts in a row, really, so they're gonna
have to see what happens with the derby winner. It
was put up for shut up time. Well he didn't.
He didn't put up so they have to figure that
(25:15):
out and we'll see. All right, let's move on to today.
Like I said, you have the bonus race from Gulf Stream.
I know the I believe it's the final race right
the forward Gal was your bonus race.
Speaker 8 (25:27):
There's a billion, it's got a horse I really like
in there. And we've got four or five good selections
at Santa Anita and and and several races with prices,
including that one down at Gulf Stream. I mean, this
is again, this is a this is a day for
price horses. If you want to try to hit two
or three price horses in ten races, that's the way
(25:47):
to go today. This is not a day that I
I don't think again, as I said before, I don't
think this is a day it's going to be very
easy to string a lot of races together.
Speaker 7 (25:57):
All right, Well, let's jump in and talk about one
of those races that you're feeling good about in one
of the many at San Anito, which would be race
eight correct a thunder Road.
Speaker 8 (26:06):
It is the thunder Road. And just a couple of
things that stick out to me. And here the two
favorites in here, the two Air Force Red and the
nine Seal team. You know Air Force Red did have
a trouble trip last time. But I'll tell you what,
I don't think this horse is near as good going
a mile a mile and the sixteenth whatever distance, And
(26:29):
if you look at his last win at a mile
and a sixteenth that was down at Delmar and that
was the rails will way out got a very easy lead,
went forty eight to the half, and he was the
only speed in that race. I think he was fifteen
to one in the morning line. I think the odds
maker blew it on that one. But anyway went out
a two to one and won that race. Jason, if
you look at the rest of this horse's performances at
(26:50):
the distance and what would he want, he would probably
want an easy lead. I'm not sure he's going to
get it. It's going to be a cat and mouse
game with Cabo Spirit. If Wandernandez can get in front
of Desormo early, maybe he's got a chance. But I
don't really love this horse. And Seal Team is a
horse that did run big on Breeders' Cup Day and
that Twilight Derby back in November. But really since he's
(27:11):
come back, he did run his best race last time.
He's been a length or so behind these and and
he's got to deal with an outside post and possibly
a wide trip. Certainly the horse to beat, I'm going
to use him. I'm going to pass all together. On
Air Force Red. I'll tell you the horse I like
in here Jason is the five astronomer. And part of
the reason is what we talked about a little bit earlier,
(27:32):
is this horse gets a rider change. I have not
been very happy with Kazushi Kimora on the turf, and
I know a lot of people are going, what what
are you talking about. He just doesn't do the little
things like ad Torri will do, like a Burials will do,
where we try to save ground, where you get the
horse to relax. He's a guy that horses run really well.
(27:52):
For to me, he rides like he rides the turf
like a dirt rider. So this horse had Kimura the
last five times and now it switches to Ditri. They're
putting the blinkers back on. He broke a little bit sluggishly.
And I'll tell you what. You go to this horse's
previous four or five races, and they're all very very good,
and this horse has upset the apple Cart and they're
(28:13):
not in the not in the PPS. But this horse
has won a couple of times at thirty to one.
So I always feel like this is the kind of
horse that gets underestimated. And I just think his form
has been very very good, other than that last race
where the start definitely cost him. So again the blinkers
are going back on. I see speed from the inside
two horses Cabo Spard and air Force Red. And I
(28:34):
see and this is important to me, and this might
not be important to some handicappers, but I see a
stone closer in the three in the flour What does
that mean? Well, that means with the rail at zero,
I got a great rider like Frankie Detria that's going
to be able to move right in. I'm head of
the three in the four, but sit behind the one
and the two, and this horse ends up getting loose.
And that's something that I really look for early in
(28:55):
a race. When you folks are handicapping, you really need
to try to do that if you can. If you
can get lucky and get loose, that's great, but if
you can handicap it, put it in your handicap. And
in again, I just see one and two showing speed,
three and four backing out and this horse moving right
over to the inside and being inside of the other
horses that could be outside of them, like an El Patente.
(29:18):
Now I see El Patente with Hector Barrios. I know
I've got to use this horse because Barrios is riding
the turf so good. But I got to tell you, folks,
when I see Barrios on a forwardly placed horse on
the turf, that takes away what I think he's best at.
I think he's best on a stone closer. He's going
to have to outfinish a horse that has a similar
style to him an Astronomer, and I like the tory
(29:38):
better to finish then I like Barrios so as much
as I like Hector. I think that's the only knock
I would have on El Patente, who looks very similar
to Astronomer. To me, I'm going to use Zo Joe
the three horse. Reportedly the works weren't great on this horse.
I'm not that concerned with that. This is a fresh
face and he ran really really well two races in
a row and had a lot of trouble. I would
(30:00):
like this horse a lot more if it weren't for
that rider, Perreira, because I think he has a tendency
to put these horses into trouble. And then you got
to use Seal Team, who I do think will get
a little bit of a wide trip, but he was
great last time. He is getting better and certainly has
the right trainer in Richard Mandela, so we'll use him
as a saver. So I like the five astronomer to
win it. Three exact the boxes in here with the
(30:21):
three Zo Joe, the seven El Patante and the nine
seal team.
Speaker 9 (30:26):
And let's play that.
Speaker 8 (30:27):
Try playing the five first and second with three, seven
and nine. It's the fine astronomer to cause a minor
upset here in race eight, the thunder Road out of
sant Anita. Today, we'll take that.
Speaker 7 (30:39):
Minor upset in the final of the four stakes races
out of Santa Again ten race card, first post noon,
which means race eight. I don't have it in front
of me. What time, Yeah, three thirty three something like that.
Speaker 8 (30:55):
Thirty seven is the listed time, Jason thirty.
Speaker 7 (30:58):
What are the odds goos off at three thirty seven? None? Five?
Don't just kidding, Yeah, I'm just kidding. The five astronomer
Frankie Detri takes over for Kazushi Kimura for Simon Callahan
five with three seventy nine, going a mile on the grass.
I love these grass miles, Steve good luck today, Like
(31:20):
we said a bunch of races that you really like,
maybe not stringing them together, but maybe hitting them all individually.
So go ahead and do that, and the bonus race
from Gulf Stream and we will be ready to talk
to you next Saturday.
Speaker 8 (31:34):
All right, Jason, everybody, have a great day out there,
enjoy yourselves, and we'll look forward to talking to the

Speaker 7 (34:05):
Hey, they were there at Fire Aid. LA boys doing
their things, TERRIFACTI in the house, huge Laker fans, the
Nikitas and the dynamic bass player Flee unique individual They
love LA and they were there to do whatever they
could to help out at Fire Aid. If you saw
(34:27):
that concert, it was tremendous, raised a ridiculous amount of
money and Clipper owner Steve Balmer, who gave his arena
for free to do it and matched two times whatever
anybody gave to the cause, he matched it and doubled it.
And that's that's stepping up. So thanks to all the
(34:49):
musicians who did that, and to everybody out there who's
still dealing with the aftermath of the fires. We're with
you and just thinking good time and doing whatever anybody
can to help out, So I just wanted to throw
the Chili Peppers out there, because of course they showed
up for that, as did pretty much everybody. The Grammys
are in town. So that's that's think why we saw
(35:10):
all those musicians out there. I'm helping out doing their
thing and trying to step up all different types too.
There was any any type of music you wanted was
on display there? Huh? All right? Where we at we
got some big races. That means we got to talk
to mister de Giulio Bruno.
Speaker 9 (35:29):
Good morning, Hey Jason, how are you?
Speaker 7 (35:33):
I am good, how are you?
Speaker 9 (35:37):
I'm doing fantastic. I can't wait for these cards today.
Speaker 4 (35:40):
I'm really excited. And the thing I get excited about,
you know a lot of the some of us really
really liked the puzzle. Yeah, we like the gamble. We
like to play, we like to win, but it's the.
Speaker 9 (35:54):
Puzzle that challenges us.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
And the one thing about handicappers said, I really trout
of stress. I have a group that we call the
the They're they're called the Gold Members, and we sit
around on a Friday night do zooms and talk about handicapping.
And one of the biggest My biggest pet thieves and
and and educational faculty that I try to put together.
(36:23):
Uh for the for these players is to do not
think like the mainstream media or mainstream player. In other words,
let's look at the second race. First of all, you've
got del Romans with an outside horse in the in
the in the eight hold, and Sorcerer Silver. What do
do handicappers do? The first thing they do they look
(36:46):
at the statistics. First time starter Dale is four percent,
Debut Maine Special five percent. Right away, that horse has
got three strikes against them from most andy gappers. I,
on the other hand, want to teach players that they
have to look at.
Speaker 9 (37:03):
The horse first.
Speaker 4 (37:04):
The horse comes before the cart, and when you start
looking at statistics, you start you You already put yourself
in a corner that if the trainer is not good,
you're not going to care who that individual is. And
you need to care who the individual is. So I'm
looking at SORCER's Silver. I saw the January fourth work
(37:26):
out of the gate. It's very good work. That horse
is training.
Speaker 9 (37:30):
Really quick, looks like a really.
Speaker 4 (37:32):
Nice horse by a sire that fires around sixteen percent
first time on and good magic out of a JBK Mare,
which I'm not mistaken that was that was a really
fast horse that was put together by John Brockelbank in
this group way back in the day. But that was
a really fast, very fast horse. So right away I
(37:57):
look and I gravitate towards the January fourth work that
I saw. Now, the January nineteenth work we didn't get
a chance to see. But when you get gateworks on babies,
I always look at the second gate work to be.
Speaker 9 (38:13):
A much more focused.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
Performance than the first gate work, because horses improved the
second gate work really they put it all together. But
if a horse comes out and he works first time
from the gate, as this horse did on January fourth
as well as he did, it tells you that that
individual is a quite smart, intelligent, forward precocious type horse.
(38:41):
So I have a tendency to give him extra credit
because they did that in their first work. And when
you see that a lot of players just want to
look for you know, I always hear I look for
a pattern every seven days. Well, if you're looking for
patterns for every seven days, you're seeing a factory, a
(39:01):
horse factory that they just turn out every seven days,
and the trainer is not looking at the individual animal.
Speaker 7 (39:07):
It's just going by pattern. Every week.
Speaker 4 (39:10):
I like to see when horses are spread out a
little bit eight days, nine days, seven days, because it
tells me that the trainer's listening to his horse, right.
So sometimes just looking at the pattern can really really
help you get an understanding on what that horse is
going through on an individual basis, not on a general basis.
Speaker 7 (39:32):
So we're talking about race two at Gulf Stream Park.
They always have a lot of nice maiden races down there.
This is one of them. It's a seventh furlong sprint
and this particular horse, Sorcerer of Silver, drew the outside hole,
which is good, the eighth hole for a first start,
Like you said, for Dale Romans whose barn is going
very very well right now, and it gets a red
(39:53):
ortiz aboard for that debut today as well.
Speaker 4 (39:57):
You think I rad looked at him and said, but Dale,
you were only four percent with first time starters. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (40:02):
No, I don't know. I don't think that came up. No,
that did not come up.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
No I do.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
I do have in the fifth race, I want to
bring the attention. This is not a pick, but this
is just something that I won't bring horse player's attention
to you. Look at on Rush, I think it leaves
the eight horse for Josie Carroll, and.
Speaker 9 (40:27):
You see twenty sixth of January Palm Meadows, he worked
fifty eight and four.
Speaker 4 (40:34):
Right away, handicaps are going to go, oh, that was
a good work. But then you look into it again
if you're really paying attention, there's only ninth out of
thirty six on the turf that day, and there's no
d in parentheses for dogs. That means that horse worked
right on the rail at Palm Meadows. And the one
(40:54):
thing that I know, because I clocked down there so
many times so many years, is when you work inside
at Tomeados, or you work inside on the turf course
in Oklahoma for Saratoga, those the times are crazy fast.
So I don't get as excited about a clocking of
(41:18):
fifty eight and four when the horse was only ninth
best out of thirty six.
Speaker 7 (41:23):
Right and work and again for people that don't know,
I'm sure a few listenings still don't. The dogs are
where they put the cones on the turf course, right,
and then you have to work outside the cones.
Speaker 4 (41:35):
It could be anywhere between thirty feet to one hundred
feet way out, so you know, so you may get
a horse, you may get a horse.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
Go.
Speaker 4 (41:47):
I remember one time when.
Speaker 9 (41:49):
A rider for blood Horse.
Speaker 4 (41:52):
Was going on and on about a horse working fifty nine.
He was working five seconds faster than everybody else. I
had to ride them and remind them, hey, those that
work was inside of the dogs. Everybody else was working
one hundred and twenty feet out. But even professionals make
that mistake, and sometimes they don't still notice that little
D and parentheses means they're outside the dogs. I always
(42:15):
like to make sure when I do turfworks to note
where those dogs are. And I'll tell you a little
secret how to figure that out. Because of the way
to cut the grass. And then what kind of more
they have is between a twelve to sixteen foot wingspan
on that more, and you can see those divots all
the way across the track. So if you got five
of them, you're multiply by twelve, you got sixty p
(42:37):
little kit if you're looking at turfworks, Yeah, all right.
Speaker 7 (42:43):
So that's that's Raised five at Gulf Stream Park and
that's the eight on rush who interestingly, before this last
work did work around the dogs. Same five furlongs one
oh one and four, which feels like a normal work
and probably was somewhat similar to the fifty eight and
four down.
Speaker 9 (43:01):
On the rail exactly exactly.
Speaker 7 (43:04):
That's race. Yeah, it's kind of the same work, just
looks very very different in the form if you're not
sure what you're looking at. So so horse that showed
a lot of talent first time out at Woodbine, going
two turns, which is not easy to do. Then they
tried the dirt, of course, did not like it at all.
It was pretty much eased up and now comes back
here and is going to give a shot on the
(43:26):
synthetic which is where the debut took place up at Woodbine.
So interesting horse here for Josie Carroll. Very good trainer.
And this horse costs a little bit of money too,
So another interesting maiden race. They have a lot of
them down at gall Stream Park this time of year.
Speaker 4 (43:43):
Quick note and breaking news that we have in the
swale the ninth don'nut God is coming out because he's
got a little sick last night, and also me Bago
in the last race in the tenth race. He's also
a stay scratch now let's talk. All. I got a
little piece of information for you. What are how are
we doing on time?
Speaker 8 (44:05):
Good?
Speaker 7 (44:05):
Go ahead?
Speaker 9 (44:06):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (44:07):
If you go down to the horse for Zaffie Joseph
Gray Scale, yep. And you go to grayscale and you
still work on January twelfth, and you still work on
January twenty six, he's fourteen days between works. A lot
of players get the conspiracy theory going. All they missed
the work.
Speaker 9 (44:26):
It must have been fast.
Speaker 4 (44:28):
If you understand the Hestile rules, if you're going to
do any bet work on a horse prior to a race,
you cannot work that horse for two weeks. So, in
other words, if you're going to inject ankles or knees,
are you're gonna Are you gonna do hines and hawks
and stifles, You've got to wait two weeks. You've got
to declare it. If that comes over, they put it down.
Speaker 9 (44:51):
There's no work.
Speaker 4 (44:52):
So that's little something that players need to pick up
and understand. With the Hestile rules. Then there's not only one,
but there's two Saffi's that have the same pattern. The
other one is in the in the last race Rojos Reda.
So when you see that necessarily don't be afraid of it.
Speaker 9 (45:09):
I wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (45:10):
I wouldn't shy away if you like the horse. I'm
never going to tell anybody to shy away from anything
they like. You know, they like it, go play it,
you know, bow me to do betting. But it's just
something to bring up as far as as far as
as something that you want to look at and learn.
Speaker 7 (45:30):
Yeah, it's very, very important because a lot of people,
me included years ago, would look at that and go,
you know, it was had on a nice little run there,
and I don't like that two weeks you know, off
before that last work. But with the new rules, like
you said, and Saffie Joseph, I don't know how to
say this. Let's see, I think he does a lot
(45:50):
of work on horses, let's just put it that way.
But this is specific vet work that he had to report.
And that's why there's the gap, if you want to
call it that, in the in the world from the
twelfth to the twenty sixth, which is exactly two weeks.
So he did get that next week before.
Speaker 4 (46:06):
I've seen this before. I started last year going into
the Risen Star with a I can't remember that was
his name. But and you know, there was all this
talk about the Sorcery's gallop. They did fine. You know,
sports ran nowhere, you know, so it is something to
think about, why are they doing this.
Speaker 9 (46:24):
Two weeks before a race?
Speaker 4 (46:26):
So that that is just my two cents how I
look at things. I tend to look at things on
an individual basis rather than general.
Speaker 9 (46:35):
Let's talk about it. If you want to talk about
the Holy Bowl, let's do it.
Speaker 7 (46:39):
It's race eleven. Like we said, it's a it's a
good field of seven. I think five of the seven. Look,
they have a pretty good shot in here. They should
in a race like this. Definitely something to recommend them.
So yeah, let's uh, let's let's do a little Holy Ball.
I'm interested in both the outside horses. I think they're
a little bit of a price. I like the way
they run. I think they can sit us off to speed.
(47:02):
But we'll see. The three is very interesting Tappa Street
because it's Brad Cox is the horse that cost a
million dollars and he came out firing first time, going
seven furlong to very impressive win, running nicely late.
Speaker 4 (47:14):
So what do you know, Well, I watched the replay
two three, times, and my sense about him was he
won that race based on just talent alone and not
brains or not seasoning. I've seen that before too. I
(47:34):
had my own horse bow Cruise the first time out
ran a lot like that. When he was between horses early.
Speaker 8 (47:41):
It was not comfortable.
Speaker 4 (47:43):
You could tell the horse was not comfortable at all.
Captain Street was not comfortable being between horses. And at
the top about that, I'm gonna say the five sixteen fault,
it looked like he was going to drop out of it.
You've seen the race, he looks like he's dropping out
of the race. All of a sudden, he's in the clear.
Reminds me new it energy and comes.
Speaker 9 (48:03):
Roaring down in the middle of the.
Speaker 4 (48:09):
Roaring down in the middle of the stretch. So when
you're watching it, you're thinking, well, you know, that wasn't impressive,
But then you think about it. For the first four
furlongs of that race, this horse was kind of struggling
to just keep his head above water. And when he
figured it out, he ran on really nice. I'm and
he's come back, and there's a work on XBTV where
(48:30):
he worked in company and men at one I had
the horse on my clock doing it on the video
in fifty nine in one and worked really really well,
so it seems like it took that step forward. I
love the fact that he does come back in a
little bit more than a month. They don't rushing him
(48:50):
back and sit in four weeks or three weeks.
Speaker 9 (48:53):
I hate that.
Speaker 4 (48:54):
I hate when they take a maiden who just ran
his heart outs and they rush him right back. They
can't wait. That's when the horse goes steps backwards instead
of forward. So I think Tappin Street is going to improve.
He's going to improve. He's definitely got the looks, he's
definitely got the ability. This is a short stretch race
that even if he is a sprinter by trade, he
(49:14):
should be able to stretch out first time out. And
there's two other horses that are They fall into that
bill as well, Ferocious and guns Loaded. If you go
back and watch guns Loaded last time out again, I
don't look for trouble when I'm looking at video, I'm
looking to see how the race shaped up, Where was
the competition, how did the horse run, what was the situation? Well,
(49:38):
Guns Loaded last time I got a twenty four to
two first quarter. Yep, absolutely walked on the lead with
two speed horses, both written by the artist brothers who
were not basically asked to go for speed. Now I
know he's right for the Angelo. They work a lot
of horses for the Angelo. I'm just wondering this horse
being six to five, if somebody didn't know that day
(50:00):
that they're going to leave you alone on the front ends.
Speaker 7 (50:03):
And they did, and he was able to hang on
by a neck, you know, and getting that really really
soft opening quarter and half mile, which he's not going.
Speaker 9 (50:11):
To get today.
Speaker 4 (50:13):
No, But the thing is that just watch the way
the horse ran down the lanes.
Speaker 9 (50:17):
He's not really stretching out.
Speaker 4 (50:18):
He's not he's not extending.
Speaker 9 (50:20):
He's basically he may be the sprinter.
Speaker 4 (50:23):
But again, when you're looking at the Hollowy Bowl and
the Fountain Youth, they're both short stretch races and those
play the sprinters.
Speaker 9 (50:31):
Now let's go to Ferocias.
Speaker 4 (50:34):
My information on Farocious is that he's really tough. They
got him working and galloping in a citation bit, and
that means they need more control because he's very, very tough.
You watch him physically, he's a he's a flotter. Cult
that to me, it looks more turfy than he does
as dirt. Now I know that Bob Baffert was the
(50:54):
underbidter on this horse. They liked him for another client.
In my situation, I look at his races. He beat
a horse Namedil Prestigio first time out, who absolutely has
been a career made. He's zero for six still. So
next time out he runs in the Cancer mcpatrick, and
if you watch that race, this horse really kind of
(51:15):
drops a bit attorney for home and then but then
it gets alongside of Chancer mcpatrick and those two came
home together. So he's got some trying them. But I'm
not so sure he's as good as they think he is.
He may be a sprinter, he may be a horse
that needs to go shorter for that big stretcher run
that he has. As they go longer, it's like stretching
(51:36):
that rubber band. It gets thinner and thinner. So just
little things like that I pick up is probably going
to be pretty close to being the favorite.
Speaker 9 (51:44):
I think the bound Street is going to move forward.
Speaker 7 (51:48):
All right. And uh, well, I kind of agree with
you on Ferocious. I think he's a little bit overrated
and maybe get exposed today trying to go two turns
in a pretty tough race with a bunch of other horses,
are going to be right with him there. We're out
of time, Bruno, appreciate it. Great information all over the
place there, especially at Gulf Stream Park, and I know
you're ready to fire today, so wishing you the best
(52:09):
of luck and we will talk to you next Saturday.
Speaker 9 (52:13):
All right, you guys have a great day, Okay.
Speaker 7 (52:15):
Bruno de Giulio doing his thing, giving information you can't
get anywhere else. That's the beauty of Bruno. All right,
we'll be right back after this. We got Jay Friedlander
on the other side. You listen to the inside racing
on AM eleven.
Speaker 3 (52:28):
Two the Patriot Am eleven fifty.
Speaker 4 (52:33):
Fans.
Speaker 2 (52:33):
It's been a great meet so far here at Santanita Park,
and today the greatness continues as we present the First

Speaker 3 (53:31):
You're listening to the Patriot Am eleven to fifty.
Speaker 7 (53:37):
There's the base of flea, unmistakable energy of flea too
con fuel it all right for back final segment, Jays
Friedlander with us quick note. We've got the late Pick
five from Tampa Bay where they have a couple of
nice stakes races. And guess who's there. Flaby and Pratt
is at Tampa Bay and he win three or four
down there based on what I saw, But Jay's got
(53:58):
that as a bonus with his Gulf Stream full car.
Huge hits yet last week at golf Stream Spirit of
Saint Louis the New York Bread for Chad Brown getting
up late and eighteen dollars and be my best paying
sixteen eighty. That's the worst that Steve also hit. You
guys are both on that one. Got a nice price
there and got some opportunity today. Jay, So how you doing.
Speaker 6 (54:19):
Doing well, sir? Yeah, So Flavian's down there. If you're
wondering what happened to him, no he didn't, you know,
just go away somewhere, go back to France. Chad Brown
has a couple of big horses and the big stakes
races down there, so look for those two to team
up and do some damage.
Speaker 9 (54:33):
I think.
Speaker 7 (54:34):
So, yeah, a couple of one hundred and seventy five
thousand dollars stakes races, and Flavian said, sure, all right,
the eight to five shot in both races, I'm happy
to do. That's that's where he's at. So you've got
that as a bonus. With the golf Stream full cart.
I had to make an adjustment here because of scratch,
So you're going to talk about race six today from
golf Stream on the show, right.
Speaker 6 (54:53):
And yeah, and whatever happens at golf Stream, Hialiah is
still around. Look for race and a surface there if
golf Stream does go, and we'll see what happens out here.
Every track has a price, so I don't think there's
a for sale sign out for San Nenito. But at
the same time, I don't think they would turn down
an overwhelming offer.
Speaker 9 (55:11):
We'll see how it goes.
Speaker 6 (55:13):
Let's talk about Florida racing ahead. Let's go to Gulf Stream.
We're gonna go to race six here, and this is
a very beatable favorite. I do think the favorite them
is a horse that just ran last time, ran lights
out on the tapeda But the two figures before that
turf at Belmont at Aqueduct, we're kind of middling and
don't inspire fear in anybody. Then is one of the
(55:36):
most beatable favorites I've seen. There's a horse down at
the bottom that I think figures in thats Echo Lane.
But the one I like is number three Palm Tree
Tyler KAFFLEIONI coming back. This one has run competitively in
a graded race, almost won the pulpit just think he's
the fastest of the bunch on the turf anyway. Liking
number three Palm Tree to take this.
Speaker 7 (55:57):
Yeah, well bred go Dolphin gelding here trained by Brendan Walsh,
who has been facing some pretty solid company and drops
a little bit today to try to get the win.
So the three Palm Tree in RaSE six at ghost
Stream Park Exotics.
Speaker 6 (56:13):
Yeah, wheel the trifecta with echo lane three ten, with
three ten, with all three ten, with all with three ten,
and then the wheel is the saber wheel on top
only a dollar exact of three with all.
Speaker 7 (56:25):
There we go. Okay, Palm Tree, who's six to one
on the morning line. I think you can get five
six to one on this runner in RaSE six at
ghost Stream Park. All right, let's jump from there to
Santa Anita, the great race place, and you're going to
talk about race number five.
Speaker 6 (56:41):
Yeah, the favorite number four wordplay from Simon Callahan. Having
a good meet. This horse has finished third three times.
He sure likes to finish third. That's not the kind
of favorite that I'll get behind. But the one I
do like is a horse that loves to win. Right
above him, Number three duly noted four races including he's
the only stakes winner in the field and the margins
are getting better each start. Well bred for the turf,
(57:04):
Grayson is an underrated under the radar turf sire, but
I really like him, especially for six thousand bucks number
three duly noted at twelve to one.
Speaker 7 (57:12):
Well worth it here, Yeah, I thought this is a
really interesting runner. Trainer Tim mccanna has you know, broad
Horses down from northern California is doing well. One of
the few trainers who's realm down here, and it's one
of the nicest horses in his bombs, really good at
three year old Philly. She is worker for and did
(57:32):
on at first and now we really fast, like you said,
side too, So she's really really interesting in here. And
she's twelve one morning line. I think you get around
ten or twelve to one.
Speaker 9 (57:47):
I think so.
Speaker 6 (57:47):
I think we'll go hold that price and let's wheel
that exactly too, Jason three with all All with three
got to do it with a twelve to one shot
that you like.
Speaker 7 (57:55):
Yeah, I think so. And they get Frank Alvarado riding,
who's ridden her twice. Obviously she's never lost, so he's
two for two on her. So he's confident and this
is a big race for them. Yeah, it's a big
deal coming down. The grass should fit her really really well,
and they're speeding here to set it up for her.
So duly noted the three trying to go five for
(58:15):
five in race five out at Santa Anita. Jay has
always appreciated, well done last week, another nice car to
Gulf Stream today. I know you're on top of that
radio role as you are at Santa Anita, so we
will talk to you next week and talk about.
Speaker 9 (58:29):
The winners then, all right, thank you, Jason J.
Speaker 7 (58:33):
Freelander, Bruno de Julio, Steve Pollock, Im Jason Levie. Which
is the best of luck wherever you play, go get them.
Talk to you next week right here at Ach
