Speaker 7 (03:40):
And here's your host, Jason Levine. Yeah, yeah, thank you,
Mark Morris. I am Jason Levine. This is Inside Racing.
It's uh ourday, February fifteenth. Here we are covering everything
that goes on the world of First Race up. We'll
get everything. We get to a lot on this hour,

(04:01):
that's for sure. And let's give you a bunch of
races to think about how the race may play out,
some analysis from Jay, Steve and Bruno, and I're going
to let you know that we flipped the script a
little bit. Jay had something to do early this morning,
so he's going to go first. He'll be joining me
in about eight or ten minutes, and then Steve will
follow and Bruno will be the closer today the finisher.

(04:25):
Hector Barrios on the grass closing the show for us
here Inside Racing. All right, where are we at, what's
going on? Where do you start? Well, let's see, I'm
going to start with some well I just had to
throw it out there. You've probably seen this, but the
quarter horse industry is reeling because I believe it's four

(04:49):
of the top five trainers, where three of the top
four have all been popped for cheating. That's the best
way to use it. I've decided to go with that
word lately, the same drug that is not allowed. Obviously
somebody figured out that this drug was helpful, either by

(05:10):
itself or to mask some other drugs. So anyway, they
they've got most of the top quarter horse trainers, so
not going very well over there either, And that's just
that's that's ugly. On the thoroughbred side, Peter Miller we mentioned,

(05:30):
got hit again. He accepted a fifteen day suspension. I
believe he's on it right now. And good old Todd
Plettter got caught again, and he got caught with the
same thing that Bob Bamfort used on Medina Spirit. He
hasn't responded yet. He lawyered up as he always does.
And interestingly, and this leads us into today's big race

(05:54):
out of town. The horse he used it on, Vassimo,
is running today in the is in start. I believe
it was in his debut in December. Gulfstream which he
won going a mile. He then came back to an
optional allowance. Obviously, they thought highly of this horse and
they're trying to push him on the Triple Crown Trail,

(06:15):
and maybe they they pushed a little too hard. I
don't know, but Todd Pledger one of the top trainers
forever now and he gets hit every couple of years.
So there's that old At this point, everybody's looking for
an edge, and they pushed the envelope, but not everybody.

(06:38):
That's what's interesting. It just seems to be a certain group.
There's a lot of guys that don't get caught them
a little bit more. There was one yesterday speaking of
the Triple Ground trail. John Sheriff's who doesn't get caught
with that kind of stuff because he doesn't play the
game like that. May have a Derby horse and Baeza,

(07:05):
remember the jockey Brallio Bieza. Anyway, Baeza broke maiden yesterday
very impressively at sant A Needa. I hopes for him.
John Shriffs does not push his horses past anywhere they
need to go, So whether or not he actually does
jump into the San Anita Derby or steaks Ray somewhere
his next start. Maybe he's not the type of trainer

(07:27):
to do it unless the horse is absolutely ready, so
we'll see. But that's fun. Great guy does everything the
right way and nice to see him on the Triple
Crown Trail with a real runner. So there's that. That's
good and the Triple Crown Trail today is down at

(07:47):
fair Grounds. Today is Risen Star Day. If you don't
remember Risen Star, go look him up and watch a
couple tapes that he may be the most underrated, forgotten
three year old of my lifetime. That horse was unbelievable
and we've talked about him on the show a few
times over the years. But he deserves to have a

(08:09):
big race named after him for three year olds, and
he's got it down at the fair Grounds where it
should be. It's today. It is race fourteen on a
fourteen race card at the Fairgrounds as they make the
most of one of their big days. And I'm going
to dig into this race a little bit now, but
later with Bruno we're going to really go through this one.

(08:30):
Workouts obviously very important for young horses, and Bruno's got
some very interesting works on some horses in that race.
And some thoughts on it. But the big news in
the Risen Star is that number two Jonathan's Way, has
scratched came up blood work or something yesterday. So Jonathan's Way,

(08:51):
it was going to be one of the three favorites,
is out. The favorite in this race will be the
four East Avenue. You probably remember him from being the
favorite in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile stumbling badly at the
start and just running around basically and last or next
to last the whole way. So he was probably the
biggest disappointment of Breeders' Cup Saturday, in that Bridges Cup Friday,

(09:16):
in that he had two brilliant starts before that tremendous speed,
expected to be on the lead and then again was
just a complete non factor and Citizen Bull was able
to get the lead and run around and go all
the way. So East Avenue is back his first start
as a three year old. He's training brilliantly by all accounts.
We'll hear from Bruno about that more specifically, but he

(09:38):
is definitely the one to beat if he can run
back to his form of the Grade one Breeders Futurnity
at Keenland, where he just went to the lead early,
went pretty fast and rumped and nobody came close to him.
But again he hasn't run since Breeders Cup, so it's

(09:59):
months all of the November, December and January, so we
need to see it. But trainer says he's absolutely ready
to roll, so East Avenue to win to beat. I'm
very interested in the nine built Wayne Catalano, who I
just loved the way this horse is coming into this race.
Really like the pattern. They started him sprinting, then moved

(10:22):
him up to seven for along to Queland and what
was a pretty tough maiden race, and he got the
job done there, which was pretty impressive in October. Then
they gave him a break, brought him back really to
get him rolling towards his three year old here in
late December in the gun Runner at Fairgrounds, which was
pretty ambitious placing coming off a maiden win. He was

(10:44):
four to one in that race, went right to the lead,
which he hadn't done before, and just rolled the field
by six. Super impressive effort in the gun Runner. Then
they put him into Lacompte, which was the next logical
step the Grade three, but it came up a very
sloppy track that day. He did not go to the lead,
ran around on the rail. I'm not sure if the

(11:05):
rail was very good that day, but he was very
very game, had the lead kind of by default with
about fifty yards to go and got nailed on the
wire by a horse way to his outside. I thought
a very impressive effort considering the racetrack was a sloppy
mess that day. It is going to be good fine today.

(11:25):
The weather is good down there, which is good news.
And I just think Built is just getting better and better.
And I like his style. He can either go to
the lead or maybe he can sit just off it
from the nine post here and I think he's going
to be very very tough and maybe a little bit
of a price five to one somewhere around there. D
Wayne Lucas in here on the rail. The horse he's

(11:47):
very high on who broke his maiden at Oaklawn It
got Chad Brown has the seven Septarian. I don't like
him in here, but he's definitely got a shot. The eight.
Gal Coso is interesting. Keith Desormo, really sneaky trainer with
three year olds. Has this one going turf to dirt.
His last dirt race was actually pretty good. So he's

(12:11):
been off since November and he brings him back here,
so he obviously feels very good about this horse, and
he's won races like this before at the price, So Giocoso,
I think one you have to include on your ticket,
maybe underneath. So again, a really good race. The Risen
Star it usually is. It drew a huge field today
and it is the end of a big, big day
done at the Fairgrounds, so we're going to dig into

(12:35):
that again more with Bruno Lake. But really really good race.
They are really good card. They have the Philly Race
right before it, the Rachel Alexandra, the Turf handicap before that,
the Mine Shaft for older horses, the al Stall on
the grass, so the late pick five all steaks there
on the fourteen race card. I'm going to bring on

(12:56):
Jay in a minute. He did add the Fairgrounds late
Pick four and late Pick five to his Santa Anita
full card, so he is on it there at Santa
Anita ten race card and the features the Pallas Burdes
Raise seven that features the hot new cowbred in town
not new but with the chosen ron on the sidelines.

(13:19):
Big City Lights has stepped up. It's a super fast sprinter.
He's absolutely crushed cowbrids in the last two and he
faces open company today. So stepping back out into open
company from the rail got to beat the comebacking anarchist.
For Doug O'Neal, he's the last scene in South Korea
of all places, running third in the big stakes there.
But we know he's very capable now a six year old,

(13:42):
and we've got role on Big Joe stepping up in
class for Bob Hess who's Barne continues to fire, and
Steve Napp has a nice horse who's going to get
the class test today. Bart Toldy and for all mankind
on the outside was coming on Big Joe last time,
so again he's stepping up for John Said, who's very
good with these. So the Palace Burtus a good race,

(14:04):
Big City Lights will be heavily favored in there, but
the rail not best spot maybe, and we'll see. So
we'll dig in a little to that race a little
bit more after the break. I want to go through
the history of that race a little bit and we'll
probably do that with Steve. Just an amazing history of
the Palace Urtus. Some of the greatest names in California
sprint history have won this race. So we'll dig into

(14:27):
that a little bit more. Let's bring Jay on right now.
See how he's doing. Jay, Good morning, Good morning, Jason.
Hey you ready to roll here?

Speaker 8 (14:38):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (14:38):
And I used to talk to you this early.

Speaker 7 (14:41):
It's only a few minutes.

Speaker 9 (14:42):
Come on, man, yeah, I just set that alarm a
couple of minutes early.

Speaker 7 (14:47):
So that's right.

Speaker 10 (14:49):
Looking around the world here, and just a brief touch
on international racing before we get into things. The horse
that I still consider the best older horse in the
world on dirt anyway, River is out of the Saudi Cup,
had a training incident, but he's still looking forward to
defending his Dubai World Cup trophy next year. It's just

(15:09):
really interesting because if you remember this Wars when first
started out, was competing down to Delmar, want of stakes
down there, and then was sold international interest and crazy enough,
I mean you thought, okay, well maybe they would prepare
him for the Breeders Cup, but no, they just decided.

Speaker 9 (15:26):
Well, we're just going to run him two races a year.
We're gonna run him in the Souding Cup in the
Dubai Cup.

Speaker 10 (15:31):
So it's like, okay, well, it's thirty two million dollars
in purses.

Speaker 9 (15:35):
I guess it's hard to argue.

Speaker 10 (15:36):
But still, I don't know if that's really doing what's
best for racing fans around the world.

Speaker 7 (15:40):
No, it's not. It's doing what's best for those owners
who bought him for that reason. That's pretty clear. They
don't care. They bought a nice worse. They want to
watch them run where they are and go for that money,
and that's it. They don't care. That's you just got
to live with it. You get to see him on
TV once or twice, that's about it. But not in

(16:03):
this Saudi Cup, which is kind of falling apart a
little bit. You know, a lot of the American horses
aren't going over for a variety of reasons, so interesting
to see how that race plays out over there. Screw them,
I mean, the sports washing stuff is I think kind
of sickening. And there now they've taken over boxing too,
which was one of my sports, so yeah whatever, and

(16:23):
golf and golf. Yeah, they're trying really hard. You've got
to be a pretty bad regime to, you know, go
out of your way and do that in a variety
of sports. But but they are, so they're giving it
their best shots. Some people fall for it, some don't.
It just depends on who you are and what you
believe and what you care about. So uh, anyway, let's

(16:45):
let's go uh and focus on American racing.

Speaker 9 (16:49):
Yeah, well you do that. Have quick comment for you
in the Risen Star.

Speaker 10 (16:53):
I don't think you mentioned this in the intro, but
Jonathan's Way is out today.

Speaker 9 (16:56):
The second choice, Steve is.

Speaker 10 (17:00):
Yeahas very high on that horse. But yeah, that seems
to really throw the odds even more in the favor
of East Avenue. He's going to be tremendously over bent
now with the second choice out. So for people that
like an alternative, this might be your day.

Speaker 7 (17:14):
Yeah. Yeah, he's having toue probably be even money in
here with Jonathan's Way out. Yeah, so we'll see. Now
you've used this race because you have the late pick
four and late pick five from the fair Grounds as
a very nice bonus on the Santa need a full
card today. Well, note no golf Stream today, you had
other things pressing, but that will return next Saturday.

Speaker 9 (17:37):
Correct, that is correct. Gulfstream will be back in full
force next Saturday.

Speaker 7 (17:42):
Yep. Absolutely, their meat is in full gear right now,
the Saffy Joseph meat down a Gulf Stream. Anyway, let's
talk fair grounds because you have one of those races
you wanted to talk about, Race twelve, correct, and that
is the fair grounds on the grass it.

Speaker 10 (18:01):
Is, and we're not going to try to reinvent the
wheel in this one. Jason Jigante is the horse that
has the best last race speed figure and Jose Ortiz
has really fit this one like a glove. In fact,
I haven't had a chance to comment because we don't
do fairgrounds every week, but Jose Ortiz has just been
running rough shot over that jockey colony down there. He

(18:22):
comes from the toughest jockey colony traditionally, which is the
Niris Circuit, which transfers down mostly to Gulf Stream in
the winter. And as good as Jose is, I mean,
he's behind his brother Arad, He's behind Flavian Pratt, he
might be behind Joel Rosario.

Speaker 9 (18:39):
So that's a tough colony.

Speaker 10 (18:41):
Any of those guys would be competing for number one here,
and when Flavian's out here.

Speaker 9 (18:44):
He usually does.

Speaker 10 (18:45):
But Jose's at twenty nine percent and he's been over
thirty for much of that meat perfect two for two
on this one, just sits tight and stalks the pace
and just as blown by him.

Speaker 9 (18:56):
Light liking.

Speaker 10 (18:57):
Jigante get his first graded win here today in the
Fairgrounds stakes.

Speaker 7 (19:03):
Okay, yeah, he draws a nice post in here as well.
Very start on a turn there at Fairgrounds for this
mile on Nathan the Grass. Yeah, it was aots. I
hadn't noticed how dominant he's been down there, but thirty
percent he's winning everything and he gets a nice ride
here for Steve asmuson the two. Jigante, you're hoping to

(19:24):
get seven to two on him in race twelve at
the Fairgrounds Exotics or no.

Speaker 10 (19:31):
This one straight up, and I would say, even if
you get it's gonna be bet it's it's the mild
favorite in a competitive heat, and I'm looking more like
a price of two to one to five to two.
It's still a value at that price. If it's four
to five.

Speaker 7 (19:45):
No, yeah, okay, there you go. You got to have
a number in mind where you're going to jump away.
So even money around there is a no go. But
I don't think he'll be that low. He does come
off two wins and does like the Fairgrounds, but Jigante
can play in Race twelve down at the Fairgrounds on
the fourteen race card. It's the final turf race of

(20:08):
the day down there. All right, let's jump to the
great race place where the weather is good. And the
big news is that all the races are on the
grass today, So I needed to note that they are
on the turf. Got a lot of rain this week's
physically on Thursday, but the turf is listed as good.
And I believe there's five or six turf races today,
so we're on the grass. You're going to talk about

(20:30):
race three.

Speaker 9 (20:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (20:32):
I didn't want to gamble on those turf races because
who knew last night what they would do. But yeah,
there's one I really like here because I think there's
a beatable favorite, Number seven to Loose to Track, certainly
in a sixteen thousand dollars non winners to lifetime, which
is a pretty easy race. Just ran away from them
and hid. But I didn't really like that diminishing distance

(20:54):
at the end. Opened up by seven and then they
were kind of getting to loose to track and she
only won by three and a quarter. And now she
steps up a little bit and George Papadre is a
pretty good trainer, but you know, I think there are
better trainers in here, and the one I like is
a little bit higher.

Speaker 9 (21:12):
Up there at number four Isabelle Ludlow.

Speaker 10 (21:14):
And what's interesting Isabelle Ludlow is going for the best
trainer in the race, that's Mark Latt, and Mark Wlatt's
just been dominant. This is the second one after a claim.
He's thirty seven percent wins second after the claim. And
you'll notice that Diego Herrera, who after that easy win,
certainly would have had a second call on that mount

(21:35):
for Papa Dromo Lex instead to stick with Isabelle Ludlow,
who didn't win last time, but was facing tougher twenty
thousand non winners of three as opposed to sixteen thousand
nine wars of two, so infinitely tougher company. Even though
it's only a tiny increment in terms of the claiming price.
I think Isabel Ludlow certainly has an edge here and

(21:55):
liking number four Isabel Ludlow to take.

Speaker 7 (21:57):
This okay with Diego here, like you said from Mark Glatt,
that that status pretty impressive. Once he gets a new
horse in his barn, he figures him out pretty quickly
and places them very well. So Mark Glatt second time
off the claim with Isabelle Ludlow one hundred and twenty
four pounds today in RaSE three where they go six

(22:18):
and a half for longs on the dirt and exotics.
I see you've got a couple of horses to use
with the four.

Speaker 9 (22:25):
Yeah, we'll play an exact to here.

Speaker 10 (22:27):
We won't play everybody because it's a short field and
if you just play everybody, I only it's to be profitable.

Speaker 9 (22:32):
But we'll single out the ones I like.

Speaker 10 (22:34):
We're going to use a stellar cap ufta and a
big long shot at twenty to one. The real horse
strange addiction dropping in class and off previous form.

Speaker 9 (22:43):
And off the class drop could have a shot to
hit the board.

Speaker 10 (22:46):
So it's two dollars exacta with the four on top
four with one five sixty seven, and the backwheel will
be only a dollar exact because we want the four
to win one five six seven with number four and
definitely a win bet and problem a place bet on
Isabell Ludloa. Unless this one's Hamburg, this one I don't
think will be. I think to Luseler track will take
most of the action, and I just don't think to

(23:07):
Lusler track is going to like that extra half furlong.

Speaker 9 (23:10):
I mean, she was.

Speaker 10 (23:11):
Already fading at six and now she's got to navigate
six and a half.

Speaker 9 (23:13):
I think that's what she wants.

Speaker 7 (23:15):
No, she hasn't really been successful trying to go that
far in her career. Twelve race career, two wins, no seconds,
no third. So it's all or nothing for the seven
to loose the track. Today you're going for nothing and
hoping to get her out of there completely and hit
the exact that with four over the one, five and
six would be the better payer there. So jay as

(23:36):
always appreciate it. I've been hitting those early pick four
pick fives. They haven't been paying much. Not your fault,
maybe today day a little bit more, but continuing to
hit them, which is really all you can do. Put
the ticket together and watch the horses run, and you know,
when three big favorites win, there's not much you can
do about it. But Isabel Ludlow not one of those
big favorites. So good luck in RaSE three and the

(23:58):
rest of the day, and have yourself.

Speaker 9 (24:01):
All right.

Speaker 10 (24:01):
Good Thank you Jason and everybody enjoying the data. It's
a beautiful day. We're past that rain, so good day
to get out there and have some fun.

Speaker 7 (24:08):
It is. Yeah, nothing prettier than Santa a Nita after
a rain, when it's just clear as a bell out there.
All right, Jake Greenland are doing his thing early today
on the show. We're going to take a break. We're
going to come back with Steve Pollock right after this year.

our man, Steve Pollock. I'm gonna do some a little
different with him. He doesn't know what's coming here. Steve,
you ready.

Speaker 11 (27:04):
That's a great song and a great introduction and whatever
it is, I am ready.

Speaker 7 (27:09):
You are actually ready for this more than you know
the future today. That pales burtus So. I did this
a couple of weeks ago at the San Marcos. I said,
I'm going to look at the history of this race
because they've been running it forever and this is you know,
some pretty amazing names have won this race, and man
it was it was pretty awesome to go back through

(27:29):
one thing interesting about this and I think it was
the reason that I did it. I guess we'll start
with this Richard Mandela won this race last year with
Big City Lights, and he is back to defend his title.
It is the second Palace Burtis winner for Mandela. The
first one was a long time ago, maybe the longest.

Speaker 11 (27:50):
A trainer has been game. I'm gonna guess.

Speaker 7 (27:53):
Yeah, you remember the horse. It was Pohe trick, You're
the Man, Oh, you are the man, nineteen eighty five
phone trick for those that don't know. Was one of
the fastest horses. Yeah. Absolutely the feet Pinki and one
of the fastest horses to ever run in southern California.
There's no doubt about it. And I was just reminded

(28:15):
of how different the game was then, so much more
coverage in the newspapers, so much more from the trainers.
And this was a horse that they sent back east
after the Palace Verdes. I think he ran to San
Carlos won that, and then Mandela sent him to New York.
He won a couple races there. He was nine for nine,
undefeated and really kind of the talk of racing, as

(28:39):
you know, the fastest horse anybody had seen. And then
he got beat by Groovy in the Tom Fool back
in New York, and I found an old article in
Mandela typical Mandela form as a young man, blamed himself
and said that he told the jockey to take back,
let Gruvy take the lead and we'll run him down.

(28:59):
And once you let Gruvy go on the lead.

Speaker 9 (29:01):
He's gone.

Speaker 7 (29:02):
And that's what happened, and Phone Trick never ran again.
He was preparing for a rematch in the Breeders Cup,
which was at Santa Anita home game for him in Mandela,
and was injured in what was his next to last
workout for that race and did not have an opportunity
to run again. Became a phenomenal sire favorite Trick was

(29:22):
Horse of the Year. Phone Chatter was a Breeders Cup
winner for Mandela. But thirty nine years in between stakes winners.
That's pretty amazing, isn't it. Nineteen eighty five twenty twenty four. Crazy?
So I don't know if you were well, let's put

(29:42):
it this way. The Fete Pinki did ride Phone Trick
here in southern California, and he was quoted as saying,
he's not the fastest horse I've ever ridden. He maybe
second because a horse that won the Talas Burtis three
years earlier is the horse Pinky has always said was
the fastest he ever wrote, and that was Chinook Pass

(30:03):
from the state of Washington, who won the Long Acres
mile and won a bunch of sprint races here, and
Pink Kye has always maintains the fastest horse he ever
sat on. So pret talented runners there in the eighties,
mister Gary Stevens, you might remember him. He won four
straight Palace per Days right after that eighty six, eighty seven,

(30:24):
eighty eight, eighty nine, right when you were getting in
the game, he dominated this race. And then in nineteen
ninety six you might remember this one, Steve. You're a
pretty big fan of the jockey. So let's play the
audio of the Breeders' Cup Sprint, which is going to
be won by that year's Palace Vertice winner. Do we
have that clip?

Speaker 6 (30:42):
Wait, bo, it's still Mark corsontinaciously trying to hold out
the game on the way.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
Leeda Juste's a great.

Speaker 6 (30:49):
Floor in this rutch. It's Leita just Hell Lastna first win.

Speaker 11 (30:53):
Are the tet pain dun I just got Jills Jason.
That horse was some kind of horse. Really, when he
put it all together, he was as good as sprinter,
as good a horse as I've ever seen, and just
he couldn't put it together every day. Like most horses,
they run their a race and then it takes them

(31:14):
a little while to regroup and get back. But when
he was on, he was as good as it gets.

Speaker 7 (31:20):
And it doesn't come more exciting than a sprinter who
comes from way back, right, because you know they don't
have a lot of time to do it. You know,
Zenyata was one thing. You got to watch her lope
around there for quite a while. But the sprinters, you know,
everybody gets going and they're back there tenth to eleventh place,
you know, nine ten, eleven lengths back. It's like, man,

(31:41):
you better have some finish. And he did so, Yeah,
that was your man, Quarry Nakatani. Pretty good ride that.

Speaker 11 (31:47):
Day, incredible And I think ConA Gold won this race
a few years later, isn't that right?

Speaker 7 (31:54):
Sure did, and that that's kind of where I was
going to close this out. Leave the Justice was nineteen
ninety six, Big Jag won it in ninety nine, a
great rivalry with ConA Gould beat him in two thousand
and that. You know, the sprinters in California were just unbelievable.
In the late nineties was quite a run. And then

(32:15):
recently Peter Miller we mentioned earlier he won this race
four straight, two of them with Roy h We remember
was a very very nice sprinter about five years ago.
So the history of this race pretty unbelievable. Native Diver
won it twice back in the sixties and one of
my first favorite versus Ancient Title, who was extremely versatile

(32:36):
and at the time the greatest cowbred well earner ever.
He was on the top of the money list. Ancient
Title won this race in nineteen seventy four, So just
pretty amazing history. And I thought a very good race today,
contentious race horses going up in class, a favorite that
looks tough, but you know it's going to have to

(32:57):
run his race again after running huge, and a comebacking
horse and anarchists. So fun. Fun to go down memory
lane with this one, and we'll see what happens today.

Speaker 11 (33:09):
Great stuff, Jason. That horse Big Jag was out at
my buddy's barn, Robin Hopfas, who owns Copper Medals, one
of my very best friends in the whole world, had
Big Jag out at his barn just a few years Ago.
I don't know if that horse is still around, but
I saw him in person maybe four or five years
ago out of his farm.

Speaker 7 (33:28):
Yeah, that was a stone cold runner. That big Jag
was awesome man when he was on his game. You
better bring your A plus race and you better be
named ConA Gold otherwise. See no, I'm beating him. I
think big Big Sita Lights ran into that with the
chosen bron right. He got into Mandela's barn through right now,
your cowbread steaks sprinting and Big City Lights ran great

(33:50):
every time, but he kept running second to the Chosen
bron So he's not running right now. So Big City
Lights has inherited the title of fastest Cowbread and we'll
see if he can and his title today. But a
lot going on all over the place. Did you do
anything with fair Grounds today?

Speaker 11 (34:09):
I did, Jason. They have got four races, I believe,
no three races. I added to the two of them
from the Fairgrounds and one from Gaulf Stream has a
little bit of a bonus today about the later races
at the sant Anita card. A little bit of a
lull in the card, Oh say, races two through five.
I'm going to play the opener here. But the races

(34:31):
six on are very good today, and some very competitive
sprint races, I believe.

Speaker 7 (34:37):
Yeah, it's yeah, I know you like quite a few
of the races later in the Card of San Anita,
but also really like race number one. Anything about the
track you want to talk about with the rains or
anything that you're thinking about. Obviously, we just had the
one day of racing yesterday after the big rains. Nothing
on the grass, and the grass is good today.

Speaker 11 (35:00):
Yeah, I mean, I bet it might be firm later on.
It looks like a pretty nice day today. We did
get quite a bit of rain there. I think that
the main track will be speedy as it always is.
I don't expect it to be you know, maybe the
first couple of races, but I think by the time
they run the better races today, I think you'll have

(35:21):
a very fair race track.

Speaker 7 (35:23):
Yeah, I agree. So we'll just have to see a
watch closely early and if any adjustments need to be made,
we'll make them as time goes on. But good to
see all the races on the grass. This happened last
week and it was good too. Obviously, carting a lot
of grass races these days, they certainly feel a lot
better and better for the players to have fuller fields,

(35:46):
and we're seeing that on the grass. So at least
fifty percent racing I think a little bit more these
days in southern California. And we've been pretty lucky with
the weather the rains game when we didn't run, so
that's good and able to run on the weekend, and
there's Monday racing, so I know you're excited about that
at an extra day in President's Day on Monday, have

(36:07):
action out of sant Anita and it should be beautiful
all three days, so that's good news. You want to
jump in and talk about race.

Speaker 11 (36:13):
One absolutely, Jason. Yeah, we've got a field of seven here.
These are fifty thousand dollars maiden time. So I've gotten
thrilled with this favorite here over the ocean. I know
that Jonathan Thomas is the trainer that I mentioned just
the last couple of weeks on the air, But to me,
nothing special on the drop in here. This horse just

(36:34):
kind of ran around the track last time. And I
think the two logical favorites in here, the four running
Spartan who might have a pace edge in here, could
have to deal with the railhorse.

Speaker 9 (36:44):
The six good fella.

Speaker 11 (36:45):
Is very logical. In here might have to go a
little bit wide, and I like a little bit of
a price horse in here at eight to one number two. Resemblance, Yeah,
is a horse.

Speaker 9 (36:53):
That I liked.

Speaker 11 (36:53):
And I think we go back to the Alan Benowitz
days what this course looks like. This is a horse
each time that he's gotten on the turf AND's been
at this level, he's gotten a little bit better each time,
running a point or two faster each time. And if
you look at that last race, Jason a linked in
and a half loss to a horse named Spearfish. First

(37:14):
of all, Spearfish would be one of the best rides
you'll ever see in your life. Go back and watch
that tape. I remember that doctor Barrios, who else, makes
an amazing ride and gets through right at the right time.
But that being said, Resemblance was bouncing into the favorite
that Flavi and Pratt was on in that race, and
those two really would have been much closer. I really

(37:35):
thought that both of those horses lost ground late in
the race. I think Resemblance has just been improving very
steadily and very nicely. For one and for two I
really like the trip that this horse is going to get.
I think Noble Gary is going to go to the lead.
We've got the rail at zero, so being inside and
saving ground is very important. I think Resemblance can be

(37:56):
tactical and be right in behind there, maybe beat three
four behind early, but beyond that rail, saving some ground
around that first turn, and it should really be in
a good spot. And again I thought when that horse
went to do the running last time, there was definite trouble.
I thought that horse could have been closer, and with
a little bit of time, I think this one's going
to go forward today. I like number two Resemblance to

(38:17):
upset in race number one. I'll play this one to win.
Just two exact as in here and when I like
the other shorter price horses, Jason, I usually stay away
from a trifecta. If there's no other price horse that
I like, I'm just going to play in exact a
box here with the four running Spartan and the sixth
good Fella. It's the two Resemblance in race one out

(38:38):
at sant Anita today.

Speaker 7 (38:40):
All right. I like that they gave this horse a
little bit of a break. You ran right after opening
day December twenty eighth, so got about six weeks coming
in here for Steve Napp, who's still doing pretty well.
Not as hot as he was and maybe a year
or so ago, but his horses are running, and Thiago
Praira has been a board excuse me every time on

(39:00):
this horse. I certainly knows him very very well, and
do for good a good run, Like you said, after
having some trouble last time. I do remember that race
because that was an all time Hector Burio was finish
getting up in time on Spearfish, and I believe that
earned me some money, So that's probably why I remember
that race. They tend to stick around, and your rememory

(39:22):
a little.

Speaker 11 (39:22):
Bit better when you stick around, don't they.

Speaker 7 (39:24):
It's amazing how that works, isn't it. It's kind of
kind of funny, just one of those things you learn
over time. But yes, I do recall there be in
some trouble in that race, and I did go back
and watch the replay and Resemblance did not get one
hundred percent chance to show what he could do there,
but like you said, improving a little bit each time
out and does get back on the grass today to

(39:46):
kick things off at twelve thirty on race one of
a ten race card out of the Great Race Place.
Anything else before we let you go.

Speaker 8 (39:54):
Steve.

Speaker 11 (39:58):
No, you know I excited about watching those Fairgrounds races.
A beautiful turf course down there, Jason, very very very
well manicured. They're getting the right amount of rain. I
think you'll be interested, folks if you haven't seen that
course in a few years, like I hadn't, it was
really sandy based and it just didn't look like there
was any grass on it. But the grass has been

(40:18):
pretty lush down there. I've been watching pretty closely, and
I think the turf course has been playing very similar
to the way California races play. And the reason I
bring that up is because golf Stream plays nothing like that.
I mean, horses loop and get to the outside. There's
never any room on the inside at Gulf Stream, very
similar to Keenland. When you get to a place like
the Fairgrounds, that's going to be very similar to what

(40:40):
we see here in California. So if you've been trip
handicapping a certain way here, put that to work at
the Fairgrounds today. I think that'll help you because I
think those kind of horses will win down there, all right.

Speaker 7 (40:51):
Very good. And what we remind folks, you've got two
of the fair Grounds races, one of them being the
Risen Star on the Santa Needa full card and one
racing Wall Stream. Correct, that is correct, Jason, Yeah, there
you go, all right, and good job pulling Phone Trick
out of nowhere. You were not prepared for that, but
that that is right when you got into the game,
right eighty five, right around.

Speaker 11 (41:12):
There, Yeah, eighty three eighty four, So it was after
that first one that you mentioned, which I think you
said was Chinnick pass.

Speaker 7 (41:20):
Yeah, Chinick passed a year of.

Speaker 11 (41:21):
Him and did know of him, but yeah, phone Trick
I did watch and yeah, that's Right's right when I
started in the game eighteen eighty three.

Speaker 7 (41:29):
Yeah, and Richard Mandela was believe he was thirty five
at that point, so it was, you know, thirty nine
years later, still going and wins the race again. Amazing.
Maybe that's one of the reasons he's one of your
favorite trainers in mine as well, as he was just
getting rolling while we were getting into the game, so
kind of been following his entirety.

Speaker 11 (41:49):
It was always done the game right, always done it right.
There's no no positives for him. He's he's a positive
guy and just and then really takes care of his
horses the right way.

Speaker 7 (42:00):
Yeah, sure does, and was given the Lafitte Pinchai Award
last year. I don't know if we mentioned that down
at Del Mart, which is for integrity and doing good
for the game. And I couldn't think of a person
more spot on to win that one than Richard Mandela.
And again he has the favorite today Big City Lights,
trying to defend his title in the Palace Urdas. All right,

(42:21):
Steve has always appreciated. Good luck today, tomorrow and Monday
holiday racing again here and we will talk to you
next week.

Speaker 8 (42:30):
All right.

Speaker 11 (42:31):
Everybody have a great day out there, and we'll talk
to everybody next week.

Speaker 7 (42:35):
All right. Steve Pollock continuing his nice run, and I
know he's excited about four or five of the races
out there, of the ten today at sant Anita and
the bonus races for you at Racingjason dot Com. Trying
to do well for you, as is our man Bruno
de Julio. He's going to be joining me after the
next break. We're going to dig into some paraground some

(42:56):

Hey, we're back, talking heads, bringing this back. One of
the first female bass players to get well known at
their Teina waymoth. What was she good?

Speaker 1 (43:58):
Is good?

Speaker 7 (44:00):
Last night on Saturday Night Live Special Concert You haven't
seen that. You can just find different clips, but there's
pretty amazing quantities. Last night in New York, everybody seemed
to show up and bring their a game for the
fiftieth anniversary of the Saturday Night Live Music. Jack White
closed the show. Pretty impressive rock and roll guitar and performance.

(44:21):
There by him. He brought his a game for sure.
So yeah, that was that was a lot of fun.
All right, where are we at, Well, let's get let's
get our man, Bruno on here. We'll go down memory
lane a little bit with him, and then we'll dig
into what's going on today. Bruno? You with us?

Speaker 8 (44:39):
Yeah, you know, that's the longest I've heard talking heads
not talk about a golden rail. Okay, I don't have
to think about that one.

Speaker 7 (44:50):
Yes they are.

Speaker 8 (44:52):
Hey, great segment on sprinters in California is by the way, Oh.

Speaker 7 (44:57):
Thanks, I mean this is just you know, it got
me thinking about this race, and boy I went back
and looked through it and it's like that that's the
history of sprinting in California racing. You know, this was
one of the we didn't have. We don't have that
many big graded stakes races in California. This one's been
downgraded lately, but this was one of the ones early
in the meet at Santa Anita that you needed to

(45:19):
have if you were a big time sprinter. And everybody
and their brother has showed up for this one. So
it's pretty cool to go through the names and see
the trainers, the jocks, and then the horses that just
bring back a lot of memories. I know, all the
late nineties, early two thousands when we had Caller One,
Big Jag, Cone of Gold, just just it was a throwdown.

(45:39):
Every sprint, every sprint race was a big one for
a few years out here.

Speaker 8 (45:44):
Yeah, you mentioned Phone Trick. The interesting part about him,
he was by one of my favorite sires, Clever Trick
by Aska Paid And when you look at Big Jag
trained by Tin Pinfield, he was by Clevin. Do you
remember who Cleven was by No Alidoro and Big Jag

(46:09):
was out of Affirmed Mayor how about that?

Speaker 7 (46:12):
I do remember that. Yeah, that was pretty cool. That
was that was pretty interesting. That was the first big
rivalry for me that I was already hooked into the game,
but boy, that one solidified that I was an affirmed
guy and was lucky enough to be at the Belmont
with my dad seeing him go for the triple crown
against Ali Dhar and what still may be the greatest
race ever run. Pretty hard to top it considering the

(46:35):
rivalry and everything that was on the line and the
way the race went. So yeah, that was a good one.
And Big Jag had had both of them in the Bloodlines. Boy,
he could really run.

Speaker 8 (46:47):
Now we've known each other and dealt each other, probably
were last twenty five years, right. I knew that for
some reason.

Speaker 9 (46:54):
When you guys start up pinned.

Speaker 8 (46:55):
The jag, I said, Jason knows that. Aladar An affirmed Ivory.
You know, that's how long I've known you. You know,
I'm knowing you almost two a third of my life.
Two thirds of my life.

Speaker 7 (47:07):
So that's a little scary.

Speaker 8 (47:10):
And it really kind of ties in when you're talking
about California speed. It's going to tie into what I
want to talk about. And I want to start off
with the risen start because a lot of people may
look at that race at in California and draw a
lot through East Avenue because did you see the bad
effort last time out? The one thing about going into

(47:33):
that race is doing your homework. And you hit the
nail on the head when you said.

Speaker 7 (47:37):
Look that.

Speaker 8 (47:39):
I went and looked at the history of the race.
That's one of my favorite handicapping angles to do to
find out what works in that race. If you're out
there and you go, god, I've never done that before,
start doing it. You start uncovering little pieces of information
that's going to lead you to the winner in those
kind of races with that kind of history. So when

(48:02):
you when I went into the brit of Cup and
I was with you on the show, and I love
Citizen Bowl in the Brita of Cup, Juvenile and one
of my main points was East Tabnue is incredibly talented.
But when you run statistics on Brendan Walsh, who's a
phenomenal trainer who's done a great job with Goodolphin and

(48:23):
all this clients. He's won a couple of races for
me when we had a Philly that won the Untappable
Back on Back about three years ago. And of course
his names escapes me, you know, but it's one of
those things that when when you look at that and

(48:45):
you look at his record he was one for twenty
five in the last four or five years at counting Colinifornia.
In California, one for twenty five. Now, why is that?
You know he's a great trainer, he does these horses
look fantastic. Why because Brendon Walls only one for twenty
five in California heading into that race. So the whole

(49:07):
point about you talking about California speed California speed is
much different than East Coast speed. And that's the one
thing when I went to Saratoga in twenty twelve, it
started clocking there and we're and playing the Eastern circle.
Going to Churchill is realizing that even though horses are
showing speed in the morning, they really and I'm just

(49:30):
using this as an as example. Here in California, you
want to be on the lead in twenty one and four,
that's walking for you. In on the East Coast, they
want to go twenty three first quarter. That's walking for them.
That's a whole five to six flights different in the
pace scenario. So horses here in California are I'm more

(49:54):
used to basically run from the bell to the wire
all out. And you can see that the way they're
trained and the way they're there and they're handled by
their conditioners, that's what they want them to do in
cal and four. In California, excuse me. And on the
East Coast they're wont have to go in the forty

(50:15):
nine in the morning with the twenty five and finishing
in twenty four. They're not into the speed. And also
the tracks back they're a little bit more demanding the
weather's more demanding, and you've got more horses that are
going to have to want to uh that you cannot
go and let them rip every time in fifty nine,
which a lot of the times that happens here. So

(50:36):
there's a huge difference and you have to understand that.
So Brendan Walsh is not a guy that's gonna work
his horse fifty eight and change every single time. In fact,
I can't remember the last time he really worked the
horse in fifty eight and change. So when you're looking
at this and you're looking at the Risen Star and
you're thinking, well, you know who's gonna who? Who can
go with he Stabbingue to beat them? Well, no, not

(51:00):
many people, Not many horses in here can go with
East Avenue. He's trained fantastic. He had a phenomenal gatework
which kind of told me a little bit about what
the mentality was with Brandon Walsh and his assistant Paul
Badden over at Fairgrounds to basically.

Speaker 9 (51:18):
Let him roll.

Speaker 11 (51:19):
He let him roll on.

Speaker 8 (51:20):
February first, in the one on one out of the gate,
and I can tell you that out of the gate.

Speaker 9 (51:27):
I had him in Let's.

Speaker 8 (51:28):
See, what did I have him in that would have
been on February first, and he went really really well
in that spot and he went farther and longer than
than than Watchley. That was really listed. And we're going
to talk about another horse from the gate too, and
that was when he went. He went twenty four to

(51:48):
two forty eight four one on one one and fourteen flat,
which is really fast for a fairground skater. Now having
mentioned that, there's another horse that's twenty one on the
line that's really really interesting to me, and he could
round off and be a big play in the exactness
and your pick fours, big five strifectors, whatever your heart's
desires when you go wager, and that is number eight.

(52:10):
Jokoso Jocoso, you mentioned him. He worked in company with
a decent horse named next Level, and he tells you
a little bit what Keith the Sorm was going to do.

Speaker 9 (52:23):
He led him roll.

Speaker 8 (52:25):
He went twenty three and two thirty five and three,
which is pretty decent. Forty seven and four, fifty nine
and four and one to twelve flat.

Speaker 7 (52:33):
That's the hell of the work.

Speaker 9 (52:35):
He fairgrounds.

Speaker 8 (52:36):
Oh yeah, they don't go twelve flat at fairgrounds. But
what he did, he did that on February first. He
gave him a couple of weeks to recover off of that.
You don't need to see much more than that that
horse is going to be ready, but he tells you
a little bit about trainers intent. Speed is going to
dominate in this race. I think East Avenue is a
really talented horse that the longer he goes the better.

(52:57):
He's going to be. A mile on an eight, a
mile on a U might be exactly what they're looking at,
but Checosa is really interesting at a price. I'm looking
at the exact that those two and I'm going to
use both of them in the pick fours and Pick
five because you know, with all those big fields, you
can really hit a couple of you. All you need
is one launch shot. All you need is one it's

(53:18):
going to be a boom. Yep.

Speaker 7 (53:20):
Yeah, that's for sure. And Jacoso's horse that showed speed,
a little bit of speed on the dirt the last
time he ran on the dirt, which was a great
stake the Iroquois in Churchill. He was only a half
length off it, you know, after about four furlongs in there,
so he's got speed. That was against Jonathan's way scratched
out of here and own Almighty, who's a nice fast

(53:41):
horse in there. So I think, like you said, trainer intent,
he's going to be gunning out of the eight hole
to get positioned. That work indicates that he's got the
talent to do that. It's going to be an interesting
run to the first turn in this race because I
think the rail horse for d Wayne Lucas American Promise
kind of has to go from that post. And he's

(54:02):
got some speed too, and de Wayne knows how to
get him going out of the gate certainly did. His
time in California was some of the pastest first we've
ever seen. And he was a quarter horse guy, so
he's certainly aware of how that works.

Speaker 8 (54:16):
And you can't knock built. Built's really nice. I mean,
he's everything right. I heard that Jareck Loveberry reported to
Wayne Catalano that the horse didn't really like that track.
I kind of trying to not.

Speaker 7 (54:26):
Listen to that.

Speaker 8 (54:27):
He got a trip inside when you know, Disco time,
our play for the day that that night came.

Speaker 7 (54:33):
Roaring five wide.

Speaker 8 (54:34):
But let me bring up one thing about Jonathan's way.
People A lot of people like that horse. He's not
that good. He needs the lead. I saw a work
for him going into the Briece Cup that made me
scratch him right off my tickets. Where it was he
broke from the half at Churchill and there was a
team of Walshes about half a furlong in front of him,
and he couldn't wait, he couldn't rate. He had to

(54:56):
get right in front of him, and then he relaxed,
so he got a target, he ran after him and
then he relaxed. That tells me he's a horse that
doesn't want to settle. So when you're handicapping Jonathan and
Jonathan's way, which, by the way, Philip Bauer also scratch
Warrior Johnny in In in the older race a couple
of races before, that makes me wonder what's going on

(55:17):
in the barn.

Speaker 7 (55:18):
Yeah, yeah, so, but it's a really interesting race.

Speaker 8 (55:24):
It gives you good ideas. Now talking about speed, let's
move over to the fourth race.

Speaker 7 (55:30):
Fourth race A paragraunds, yes, sir, and we've.

Speaker 8 (55:34):
Got a straight maiden man. We got a bunch of
really good maiden races. If you get our sheet today,
we've got a bunch of four star works on a
bunch of horses in some of these maiden races. That
can help your ticket when you're trying to narrow him
down and your pick fourst pick fives. How about looking
at the two out of rath. I think I'm pronouncing
that correctly. Will Walden, the son of Elliot Walden, has

(55:55):
that started his career and he's doing very very well.
Good for that young man. I know he went through
some troubled times as it used. He's it at eleven
percent here, but he can fire with a first time starter.
And the horse worked on February second, and we had
him going forty six and three, and I believe, if
I remember correctly, without me flipping back onto onto my sheet,

(56:16):
he went fifty eight and four. In that word eighty three,
I'm looking at it, yep.

Speaker 9 (56:21):
Yeah, So.

Speaker 8 (56:24):
You don't get those times. I do all the I
do all the workout before all the workout notes for
fair grounds. I watch all the videos. My my camera
crews instructed to catch priority the gates. So I watched.
When I watch the worst workout of the gate, I
already have a basis of what I want to see
and what I need to see. And this horse checked

(56:46):
all the boxes. U the two out of the three folds.
Out of that mayor ran first or second, ran ren
second first time out, including Blue Squall, who's a really
nice horse for Randy Morris ran second two times as
a two year olds, as a few year old as
in his career, in its first two starts of his career.
So it makes it that this, this whole this whole

(57:08):
line is pretty precocious and out of ride. It's going
to be very interesting. I'll also have to mention brack
Costers velvet velvet war text. Try to say that enzymes,
but he's he's a complexity that they've offered three hundred
and seventy five thousand. He's coming out from pacing, so
you're getting limited information coming out of that private facility.

(57:31):
So that's going to be a really great car to fairgrounds.
I'm really excited about it.

Speaker 7 (57:36):
Yeah, it is. It's top to bottom a really loaded card.
That's what we do now. They have the big days
one or month or so, and they just load up
the car. That's where all the owners want to be,
they want to run on that day, and it's how
it is. So I just got to be excited about
it and go with it and they've got that going on.
Excuse me all day to day at the fair Grounds.
The race you're talking about is race four, and you're

(57:56):
the horse you're talking about. How to rod costs some
money too, that's a bolt row. It's only a fifteen
thousand dollars steady. They paid four hundred and fifty thousand.
So this horse obviously showed something at the OBS sales
and has shown it in the mornings too. So excited
to see the fourth race down at the Fairgrounds. The
two attora. Pretty nice run from your whisper horse last week.

Speaker 8 (58:17):
Him, Yeah, we didn't tell anybody, did we.

Speaker 7 (58:23):
Yeah, you did in a very special way. And him
looks like a very nice that's a that's a runner.
That was that was nice?

Speaker 8 (58:33):
Yeah, that was pretty good. I do we do you
need to have the whisper segment?

Speaker 7 (58:38):
Well you got you got forty five seconds left. You
got another whisper horse, and now's the time.

Speaker 9 (58:43):
Oh yeah, I do.

Speaker 8 (58:45):
I do have a whisper horse.

Speaker 7 (58:46):
And let's move.

Speaker 8 (58:47):
Over to t the fifth race. And anyway, I have
to slip back. I'm sorry, I have to flip back
all my all my pages that I've got listed here.

Speaker 7 (58:56):
Let's go over.

Speaker 8 (58:57):
To the sixth race. Get number one out of the
old here keys that cherry to both who's been training
exquisite from the gates. Just don't tell anybody number one
in the sixth race.

Speaker 9 (59:15):
Hey, if the.

Speaker 7 (59:16):
Horse runs like him, you know we're all going to
be on the Whisper horse from now on. But that's
again race six at the pair graund what.

Speaker 8 (59:27):
Okay?

Speaker 7 (59:28):
You just told them? Bruno appreciate it as always, whether
loud or soft, bringing it and wishing you the best
of luck this weekend, today, tomorrow and Monday on President's
Day on behalf of Bruno and Steve and Jay and
Zach running the board. I'm Jason, wishing you the best
