as timing goes, this is one week before Big Cap Day,
which also includes the San Felipe.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
Huge Steaks.
Speaker 10 (04:26):
I hear about that a little bit more today, but
a huge, huge day next Saturday, So looking forward to
that out at the Great Race Place.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Those big days are kind of what the game is
all about now.
Speaker 10 (04:38):
So we've got we've got one coming and the weather
looks good. So that's all good, and yeah, we'll just
we'll just go from there. Big news for today in
that in about five or six minutes, I'm gonna have
a special guest on the show, trainer Richard Mandela. It
(04:58):
would take me the length of the show to list
his accomplishments, so I won't do that, but suffice it
to say, if you've listened to the show in the
past twenty years, you know that he is one of
my all time favorite people in the game and very
much look forward to talking to him. We're going to
(05:21):
hopefully go down memory lane a little bit and we'll
certainly talk about some of the highlights of his career and.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Try to have a little fun doing it. So somebody
who's done a lot of good for the game, and.
Speaker 10 (05:34):
Yeah, I was very excited about it. So that'll be
in about four or five minutes. All things go well, technology, etc.
He does not have a big horse running this week.
He was supposed to do last week, which was what
made me think of it, and that was Big City Lights,
who scratched. But we didn't do it anyway because you
(05:56):
know we should, and we're going to so excited about
that on the track today in the news today Santa
A Nita ten race card twelve to thirty first post
feature race, the third, the Wishing Well, only drew six
training Jeff Mullens has two of them. Competitive race six
(06:17):
furlongs on the grass, a race we didn't have six
or seven years ago. Right now we have a lot
of those turf sprints on the flat in addition to
the downhill turf.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
I like them.
Speaker 10 (06:29):
Okay, not a huge fan, just more sprints which I'd.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Rather not have, but hey, they.
Speaker 10 (06:36):
Made some improvements and gave horses the opportunity to want
to sprint on the turf many more chances to do so.
So that's good. Out of town, I guess. The big
news is that today was supposed to be a huge
day at Oakland featuring the Rebel for three year olds,
but the weather there has been pretty bad all neat
(06:59):
and was bad this week, so they pushed it in
advance to tomorrow. So tomorrow will be a Rebel Day
at Oakland, and it's a heck of a race.
Speaker 11 (07:09):
I have to say.
Speaker 10 (07:10):
There is one important scratch out of the Rebel tomorrow,
and that is one of the Southern California shippers, number ten,
Bullard apparently some bloodwork portraying Mike McCarthy, so will not
be shipping to Oakland, or if he did ship there,
it's not going to run. That's disappointing. He was disappointing
(07:32):
last time in the San Vicente, but this was going
to be his first try around two turns connections. We're
very much excited about that, but we're not going to
get an opportunity to see him run. It is a
strong field and an interesting field. Lukewarm favorite and number
three Sandman. We had a lot of trouble last.
Speaker 12 (07:55):
Time, blew the break completely, was dead last Early, worked
his way back and made a big, strong move on
the turn.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
Ran really well all the way to the wire.
Speaker 10 (08:06):
And ran second behind speed King crossed over from the
ninth hole while Sandman was flailing behind him and wired
that feel for Ron mcquett and Rafael Beejrono.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
He drew outside again in the eleven hole.
Speaker 10 (08:20):
There is other speed in this race, as you would expect,
it's going to be an interesting one.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
There is a Bob Bafford shipper.
Speaker 10 (08:27):
He has owned this race in the past number of years,
but today his shipper is not one of his top
three or so it's it's Maddiquet Road, who was a
disappointing third in the bob Lewis Out. He was going
to try to rebound today. Kind of put up or
shut up day for this horse. Owned by the consortium
(08:48):
of folks who have so many of these horses, so
this is just another one for them. The one Cold
Battle very interesting, got away with slow fractions last time.
But a cool story. Cole Battle trained by Lonnie Briley,
a veteran trainer who has never won I don't think
(09:09):
ever are grade at stakes. He's only run two horses
in Great Steaks, So Cole Battle one of those fun
stories he's wanted. Evangeline Downs, Delta Downs, Remington and Oaklawn.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
You don't hear that very often for these days anymore.
So just a really cool fund race. A lot of.
Speaker 10 (09:27):
Different options in here, a lot of different ways to go,
and we're going to find out a lot more about
some important three year olds tomorrow in the Rebel. Also
way out of town. They are running the Saudi Cup today.
I'm not going to give them a lot of promotion
here for a variety of reasons. But Southern California sprinters straight,
no chaser, when the Breeders' Cup did go over there
(09:49):
and take the money in the big sprint over there,
which are sometimes the easiest races to win.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
Dirt sprints is what we do best.
Speaker 10 (09:56):
So congratulations to trainer Dan Blacker and Straight No Chase
for getting the job done in the Saudi Cup, in
the sprint in the Saudi Cup. Rattle and roll for
Ken McPeak and the very popular Forever Young who probably
will go favored in the Saudi Cup, who did draw
outside today. Okay, well I believe we have mister Mandela,
(10:20):
so let's just go ahead and bring him on.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
Richard, Good morning, Good morning.
Speaker 11 (10:25):
How are you?
Speaker 4 (10:26):
I am just fine, sir?
Speaker 11 (10:27):
How are you pretty good?
Speaker 4 (10:31):
Glad to hear it.
Speaker 10 (10:32):
So we thought about doing this last week because you
had big city lights getting ready to go in a
race that you won the year before, but had won
for thirty eight years before that. That would be that
would be the Palace Burtis. I thought that was quite
an interesting accomplishment. Thirty eight years between stakes. You've had
(10:54):
a pretty long career.
Speaker 11 (10:57):
I've been here a while. Yeah, now you remember.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
The first one.
Speaker 10 (11:02):
I'm sure very very well, very very important course for you.
When I say phone trick. What do you think these days?
Speaker 11 (11:10):
I love that horse, actually own a part of it.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
You know.
Speaker 10 (11:15):
I was doing some research and I believe it was
a twenty percent share, or at least that's what was
reported at the time.
Speaker 11 (11:22):
Yeah, okay, that worked out pretty well. Yep it did.
Speaker 4 (11:30):
You bought him at a CTBA sale.
Speaker 11 (11:32):
Correct, Yeah, when it used to be over at Hollywood
Park in March.
Speaker 10 (11:40):
I think he cost eighty four thousand from what I read,
which was a decent amount in those days. So you
guys plunged a little bit. You and two different two owners.
Speaker 11 (11:49):
Correct, Yeah, huh yeah, the guy.
Speaker 10 (11:53):
From from Dallas, mister winn Buck Wynn.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
I believe it was.
Speaker 11 (11:57):
Well, it was his son, hal Win Laurid Dandlers. They
bought him, and then I worked off.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
As one does.
Speaker 11 (12:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
Yeah, Well he came out running and was for the
folks that don't know.
Speaker 10 (12:17):
A rocket ship from day one.
Speaker 4 (12:20):
But as an owner.
Speaker 10 (12:23):
Or as a part owner, one of the things I
saw was after his first four races, he won the stakes.
In his fourth start, suffered an injury, came back, ran
in an allowance, and then you made a decision to
run him in the Palace berdes against older horses rather.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
Than in the Malibu.
Speaker 10 (12:45):
Against the arrival Pancho Villa. You remember that decision and
what went into it.
Speaker 11 (12:51):
Yeah, the horsemen and management were fighting, and there was
threat of a striking opening day, and I didn't want
to get mixed up with how to train him into
the race, so I just chose to go to the
other one.
Speaker 10 (13:07):
Ah, okay, well, I have that's very interesting. Worsemen and
management fighting. That never happens. What's that that never happens?
Worsemen and management fighting, that's right.
Speaker 11 (13:23):
And I can't remember what it was about, but I
didn't want to get in the middle of a strike
on running in, so I just chose to point to
the next race. And I was at that point I
didn't think it mattered who he ran.
Speaker 10 (13:40):
Right, well, And one of the things you said, and
if you don't mind, I'm gonna throw your own words
back at you. I know that's a little bit unfair.
But there's something very interesting here. Back in those days,
and you know this, you know better than most, racing
was a much bigger sport. It was covered far more
(14:00):
strongly and deeply, a lot more papers, a lot more writers,
a lot more press, and it seems well, I knew
it at the time, but looking back, there was a
lot more. I guess we'll call it trash talk, but
you had some interesting things to say.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
You don't seem to do this anymore, but you were.
Speaker 10 (14:22):
I'm looking at you as kind of a gun slinger
back then, based on some of these quotes from you.
Pancho Villa was the rival. He was going to run
in the Malibu, and when asked, you said, well, we
beat Pancho Villa when he was good. He went to
New York right after that and won some good races.
(14:42):
We don't need to face him again. Do you remember that.
Speaker 11 (14:47):
No.
Speaker 10 (14:50):
I just wonder what happened to that gun slinger, because
these days you're, you know, very humble, deferential, give credit
to everyone else, which is great and fine and ritually deserved.
But there's a few quotes in here. You also said
that you were disappointed when he came back in his
allowance the precisionists scratched. You said, I wanted precisionists in there.
(15:14):
You wanted to run against him. So quotes like that
were fun, and it seemed like you were just kind
of having fun with some of the writers, but very
high on the horse.
Speaker 11 (15:24):
He just made you know you had the best horse.
He was really a good horse. A real shame. I
had him pointed to the met mile and he got
a sore foot and he was high weighted for the race,
and I wish I'd have gotten to do that, but
it didn't work out. But but Tone and him was
like winning the lottery for me over the years, and
(15:48):
I've got no complaint.
Speaker 4 (15:50):
Yeah, that's well.
Speaker 10 (15:52):
And you bring up weight, and this is something I
wanted to talk about with you because you were still
fairly young in the game at that point, and weight
was a big, big deal and giving weight was important
to be seen as a great horse. He had to
do it. So in bone Trick's case, I found something interesting.
(16:15):
I wonder when you remember he won the Palace Verdes impressively.
He won the San Carlos carried one hundred and twenty
five doing that, gave between three and thirteen pounds, which
was fairly normal. Then went back and won the Bold
Ruler in the True North in New York. I guess,
before I get to the question why send him back?
There was it the East West thing? You needed to
(16:36):
win in New York to show people how good he
was or were there other reasons for that?
Speaker 11 (16:41):
Yes, it made him valuable and as a bard owner,
I guess in California and nobody really gave you a
lot of credit.
Speaker 10 (16:52):
Yeah, I mean, can we talk about that a little
bit more. Do you feel that there's any of that
left or is that completely gone?
Speaker 11 (17:00):
What did you say?
Speaker 10 (17:01):
Do you think that there's any of that sense left
or is that completely gone? Now that California does count
because I still when I talk to people back east
to feel like they don't give California full credit even now.
Speaker 11 (17:16):
Yeah, it's not what it used to be. But you know,
there's more turf riders and things back east than there
are here, so it kind of outweighs the situation.
Speaker 10 (17:32):
Well, in the True North carried one hundred and twenty
seven did that without a problem, and then you well, yeah,
there you go, he did, and in fact I can
find it. But you were very proud of him that day.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
Because he did beat Smile.
Speaker 10 (17:55):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
And then he came back he was given Q weight.
Speaker 10 (18:00):
There went very fast early Smile tested him and boy
was he a really really nice horse. And then do
you remember the horse that came at him after that?
This isn't a quiz, So if you don't, that's fine.
Speaker 11 (18:13):
Ruby won the race.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
No, that's the next one. This is the one he won.
Speaker 10 (18:18):
He put away Smile and then the horse that Loved
that Mac tried to close.
Speaker 4 (18:23):
Oh you said, well, yeah.
Speaker 10 (18:25):
I think my horse got a little tired from running
with Smile early. But when Loved that Mac got close,
my horse just dug down and held him off. And
our jockey didn't even hit him after the eighth pole.
And it was important to me to see him test
it early and then have enough left to hold off
Love that Mac. And you were giving ten pounds to
Love that Mac and ate to Smile. So pretty impressive
(18:48):
performance there, and the New York writers were sufficiently impressed
based on what I was reading. But then he ran
against Groovy and the Tom Fool that was supposed to
be allowance condition, and there was a note about that
that was going to be good for you because you
weren't going to have to give big weight, but you
ended up giving fourteen pounds to Groovy.
Speaker 11 (19:11):
Yeah I don't remember that, but the horse hit his
he hit his cessmoid coming out of the gate that day,
and it ended up it ended up fracturing later and
that's why that's why he didn't run in the Breeders Cup.
And I've always felt it very unfair that he wasn't
made Champion Sprinter. He gave Smile weight. That's the reason
(19:34):
I said that earlier. He gave him weight and beat
him and then he was hurt so he couldn't run
in the Breeders Cup, and they just forgot he'd won
nine other races before that, and that was a.
Speaker 4 (19:48):
He had and he won him easy, and he won
him fast. There was an interesting note.
Speaker 10 (19:54):
His rider was a fairly young rider those days named
Lafitte pink Kai Jr.
Speaker 4 (19:59):
Who had ridden a.
Speaker 10 (20:01):
Horse named Chinook Pass just a couple of years earlier,
who I know you remember very well, and you were
kind of comparing Phone Trick to Chinook Pass, which was
about as high praise as you could give a sprinter,
and Lafitte was was in on that comparison and said that,
you know, at that point it was awfully close because
(20:25):
no sprinters and time in those days were a big,
big deal, and winning.
Speaker 4 (20:29):
Nine in a row.
Speaker 10 (20:31):
Got a lot of notoriety for sure, But like you said,
with the injury and all that time off.
Speaker 4 (20:37):
Yeah, they they.
Speaker 10 (20:39):
Forgot about him. Well I haven't. I know you haven't,
And I wanted to play a little audio for you
because I think it was seven years later you had
a pretty good reminder about phone trick what he meant
to you in.
Speaker 4 (20:58):
The Breeders' Cup? So can we play that?
Speaker 10 (21:01):
Sorry?
Speaker 8 (21:02):
Fully intended to hold up the oncoming phone chatterer, bone chattering.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Sorry Dula going to the sixteenth poll?
Speaker 4 (21:09):
How many prizes there?
Speaker 1 (21:11):
What I'm finishes?
Speaker 11 (21:12):
They come to the line, Sorry.
Speaker 5 (21:14):
Phone chatterer scoing pretty strong.
Speaker 11 (21:17):
Channter pre battles and a step drive to it.
Speaker 10 (21:24):
Yeah, that was fun, Yes it was.
Speaker 4 (21:31):
Yeah, that was that man Pinki again, wasn't it?
Speaker 11 (21:34):
Yep?
Speaker 4 (21:36):
Beating Eddie D. They had a few battlesh over the years,
Eddie D on the lead that was fairly familiar and
Lafitte trying to run him down.
Speaker 7 (21:46):
And did there that.
Speaker 4 (21:47):
Had to be extra special?
Speaker 10 (21:48):
First breeders Cup win you had another big horse that
day that I think more people thought was gonna win.
And did you tend to do that on Breeders' Cup days?
More than one, but the first one to have it
be a phone trick had to be extra special? Yes
it was, Yeah, Yeah, she was a big, big Philly
(22:12):
that was noted during the race call a couple of times,
and that just just ran her down yet another pretty
big Philly. Winter Breeders Cup two, Half Bridled. I remember
that one very very well from the far outside post
with Julie Crone. Any similarities between.
Speaker 4 (22:30):
The two other than size, they could run.
Speaker 10 (22:36):
They could pretty much right out of it, right right
from day one. That has to be the best feeling
for a trainer, like you said earlier, just to really
feel like, look, I've got the best horse in the race,
and you know it doesn't happen that often, but when
it does, it's so much work goes into it to
be able to get to the race and have that feeling.
Speaker 4 (22:58):
He's got to be extra special.
Speaker 11 (23:01):
It really is that both of those fillies were really special.
Half Bridle was was she was like a beholder. She
just came up with a problem as a three year
old and we ended up retiring her. But in her
two year old, you are I've never known a better one.
Speaker 10 (23:22):
It's a it's a big statement, but boy, she she
was so impressive. And I remember the talk before the
Breeders' Cup was that I believe it was the fourteen
hole that she drew. It was a full field, fairly
short running the first turn. That was not a factor
and in the end, when they're that good, they overcome that, right.
Speaker 11 (23:42):
Yeah, yeah, did a masterful job with us that day.
Speaker 10 (23:48):
Yes, and you I remember that you gave her credit
in the interview. She's standing next to you with just
that little smile on her face, nod in her head,
appreciating that that you noted that those two got along
very well. And I remember that being a big part
of her success, and you talking about that was kind
of the relationship between jockey and it.
Speaker 11 (24:09):
Was the time I ever heard Julie quiet.
Speaker 4 (24:16):
Yes, she was just standing there and that is that
is rare.
Speaker 11 (24:19):
Well, it was.
Speaker 4 (24:19):
It was a big day for her.
Speaker 10 (24:21):
That was a huge accomplishment, and just I was exciting
for her and for you and for for her.
Speaker 4 (24:29):
To get the job done that way.
Speaker 10 (24:31):
You have another pretty nice fully running right now. But
it wasn't supposed to be the one Copian who just
ran two beautiful races in a row. Was thirty nine
to one when she when she won her comeback, because
(24:52):
because you had Tamra in there, right, can you can
you talk.
Speaker 4 (24:54):
A little bit about going into that race, what you
were thinking about.
Speaker 11 (24:57):
The two cop trained like a Grade one horse, and
I thought she was very good until her one, her
last start the year before. She came out of that
with a little problem, but but she her training coming
back was as good as you could do. So it
(25:19):
didn't surprise me that she won. I I just never
looked at the toadboard because I'm I don't I don't
gamble that much, so I didn't think to bet on it.
Speaker 10 (25:31):
Well, she was a winner at the top of the lane.
I mean that was again the odds are you know
what what people play.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
And it's it's her mutuals. That's what the public is thinking.
They were wrong.
Speaker 10 (25:42):
But you rarely see thirty nine to one shots win
like that. She won like she was three to five.
Speaker 11 (25:50):
So I mention with that, it's just the same thing
with the older Phillies.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
Yes, she did.
Speaker 10 (25:57):
And I believe that was one of those races we're
seeing a little too much of these days. But that
was three horses from the backer barn and you in there.
It didn't matter what barn they were from or how
many there were. She really took care of business. Uh,
And you brought her back fairly quickly for that race.
I just assumed she was just doing really really well. Right, Yes,
(26:21):
that's the that's the thinking that goes into it. Now,
what's what's the plan moving forward for her? A lot
of options obviously the breeders about that. That del Mar,
that's a long way out there. What are the thoughts
for the next couple of months.
Speaker 11 (26:37):
We're thinking of running around the Beholder mile?
Speaker 4 (26:39):
Here Beholder, she was pretty good? Who trained her? Trying
to remember, yeah, yeah, that that would be fun, That
would be fun for you. I didn't want to ask
you sing the Beholder.
Speaker 10 (26:59):
You have another unique feat in that I think you
probably affected the crowd at the Pacific Classic more in
two different ways than any trainer with Beholder.
Speaker 4 (27:13):
I was there, I mean that.
Speaker 10 (27:15):
Was just a there was shock and just I think
just jubilation that day because of the way she ran.
It was just pretty stunning to see anytime you see
a performance like that, that's once every I don't know
ten years, and the place just went crazy. But earlier
(27:37):
you quieted the entire crowd when Ciguard came out. So
this wonder your thoughts on those two races. You obviously
had different thoughts going into each but both stunning in.
Speaker 11 (27:51):
Their own way. When we beat there and go. You know,
I was as surprised as anybody that that he got
beat period. But I had two very good horses and
and uh, did you know he had traveled a lot
and run in a lot of places, and it maybe
(28:12):
maybe the tank was a little low.
Speaker 4 (28:17):
And he went very her.
Speaker 11 (28:19):
She won the she won the Fillyant Mayor Stake the
months before, and in the Winter Circle she just gave me.
By that time, I just had such confidence. I said,
in the Winter Circle, we're going to run back in
the Classic, and and she did, and she came through
probably the probably the best race of her life.
Speaker 10 (28:39):
Well, I mean that's that's the best race in in
in most horses lives.
Speaker 11 (28:43):
That was.
Speaker 4 (28:47):
Uh yeah, that was I still shake my head at that.
Speaker 10 (28:51):
You know, we've not seen too many of those. There
has to be a level of pride in that that
is fairly unique for a trainer, I would think, right,
I mean, that's everything coming together and even surpassing what
you what you believe might be possible.
Speaker 11 (29:09):
Yeah, but shoes, you know, I had catch a flight
who actually ran second in the race also, and I'm
pointing him to the gold for the Classic, and I
thought to myself, you know, if I worked him together,
she'd beat him, so why not living.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
It was that simple.
Speaker 10 (29:29):
Yeah, as your philosophy of training in the morning, getting
horses ready changed over the years for any particular reason,
or do you just take it horse by horse? Is
it just unique to the individual horse.
Speaker 11 (29:47):
Hey, you've got to take it horse by horse. They're
all just a little bit different, So you just take
it as it comes. And they change when they start racing.
You know, their their mindsets are different. You've got to
keep up with it.
Speaker 10 (30:05):
It helps to have not the world's largest barn, I
guess in order to do that. And I think you've
always tried to do that right so that you're your
hands on on every horse.
Speaker 4 (30:16):
In the barn.
Speaker 10 (30:18):
And I know that comes from way way back, working
with your father with every kind of horse. And I
remember you telling me a long time ago, seeing every
type of injury and issue and learning you know, maybe
how how how it happened what you might be able
to do too, you know, to get them better and
(30:40):
get them to where they can race again. And I'm
sure at this point you're probably a little quicker with
the diagnosis.
Speaker 4 (30:47):
But it's the same thought process.
Speaker 11 (30:49):
Right, Yeah, there's that stuff hadn't change. It'll be the
same for the next one hundred years, Yes, it will.
Speaker 4 (30:59):
Well.
Speaker 10 (31:00):
I wanted to thank you for the time and also
congratulate you last August. I believe that Delmar you were
given the Lafite King Kai Award.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
For I guess the good.
Speaker 10 (31:16):
Of the game and showing tremendous integrity, and that had
to be a little extra special because of your relationship
with Lafitte, who.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
They named the award properly, and you guys certainly.
Speaker 10 (31:28):
Went way way back and had some awfully high moments together,
so I think that that had to be kind of
nice for you. I know you tend to downplay those things,
but the award named after him for that reason had
to feel good.
Speaker 11 (31:42):
It meant a lot to me because he's he's a
hero of mine since I'm a young teenager.
Speaker 10 (31:50):
It's nice to get to know your heroes and they
end up being as good as you thought.
Speaker 4 (31:53):
That doesn't happen all the time.
Speaker 11 (31:56):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 10 (31:57):
What's that when you meet your heroes, it doesn't aly
work out that way. They don't always live up to
what you think in his case, it did.
Speaker 11 (32:08):
He surely did. Yes.
Speaker 10 (32:11):
But before I let you go, indeed, before I let
you go, if you'd indulge me for just a second,
there's one horse I wanted to ask about in one
particular race.
Speaker 4 (32:22):
And that's a wonderful grass horse and the United who
you won many stakes with h and went into.
Speaker 10 (32:29):
The Breeders' Cup. I'm gonna say, way under the radar.
Not to me and a few other folks. We thought
he had a really good chance. What was your sense
going into that race? You say, you don't look at
the topeboard. He was fifty to one, which was pretty
shocking to me.
Speaker 4 (32:46):
And boy did he run his race that day.
Speaker 11 (32:50):
He really did. He was a very good horse. I
don't fifty. That must have been having a bad year.
Speaker 10 (32:59):
It was probably the trainer people were, you know, not
a lot of success in the Breeders'.
Speaker 4 (33:03):
Cup, that kind of thing.
Speaker 10 (33:05):
Yes, that was a young Klaviian Pratt. I guess that's
the last thing I wanted to ask you. A fairly
young Klabian pratt. Aboard gave me perfect ride, saved ground
all the way around, tipped out when he needed to,
got the lead just got nipped. You remember what it
(33:26):
was that you saw in him early on that got
you to put him on some horses, because it's really
that's what I remember, and that's kind of how he
started in southern California.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
Was with you, given some given him some opportunities.
Speaker 11 (33:40):
Yes, he was riding for the wartime or family in France,
and I've trained for them for thirty years. And they
sent me a message asking what I kind of host
a young kid that is riding for him and work
in the mornings, and if I wanted to ride him, fine,
if not, fine, and so I said surely. So he
(34:04):
came and a month went by and I and I
just thought he was looked as good on a horse
as anybody I had ever seen, and realized, hell, I
should have been riding this guy. So I put him
on three horses before he left, and if the third, second,
and the last one one, and I couldn't wait for
(34:25):
him to come back the next year, and he want
some more races, and it just got better and better
from them. But right from the first time we put
him on a horse, he just looked he looked so perfect.
I've never seen anybody look looked better and most of
them not as good.
Speaker 4 (34:44):
Did you talk to him at all about you know,
was he listening?
Speaker 10 (34:48):
Were there things that you were trying to explain to
him about American racing?
Speaker 4 (34:52):
Was he just pretty much ready to go?
Speaker 11 (34:55):
Yeah? He was. He was a good student. He observed
and watched and I never had to say much time.
He knew what to do. Everything just came natural. Ton.
Speaker 4 (35:07):
Well, he's uh.
Speaker 10 (35:08):
I think he's he's doing the sport very very well
and representing the sport very very well.
Speaker 4 (35:14):
And I think.
Speaker 10 (35:16):
Your your initial thought about him certainly turned out to
be on point. Had one of the great years we've
ever seen last year, and now you know, now you
need to get him right now.
Speaker 4 (35:29):
You have to you have to fight with other folks
to get him to ride your horse.
Speaker 11 (35:34):
Right, That's right.
Speaker 4 (35:36):
I guess that's a good that's a good thing. We
have one that good. It's good for the game and
it's good for everybody.
Speaker 11 (35:42):
Hey, I really appreciate the time person. He is first
class person, not just a rider. And there's nobody, nobody
ever been better for the game than him.
Speaker 10 (35:56):
Yeah, that's that's a that's a big statement. Well, I
would I would put you in that category. I know
you wouldn't do that, but I'm going to go ahead
and do it now just for fun and really appreciate
you coming on and giving us the time going down
memory lane a little bit indulging me and just want
to wish you the best of luck this weekend and
(36:16):
moving forward over the rest of the years.
Speaker 4 (36:18):
It's going to be fun to watch you do your job.
So thank you.
Speaker 11 (36:23):
It was a pleasure. Brought back some good memories.
Speaker 4 (36:26):
Okay, great, well you have a wonderful day.
Speaker 11 (36:29):
Okay, thank you.
Speaker 12 (36:32):
Trying to Richard Mandela won four Breeders' Cup races on
one day at such a career that we didn't even talk.
Speaker 4 (36:39):
About that, so that gives you an idea of.
Speaker 10 (36:43):
What you're dealing with right there, So appreciate that very
very much. We're going to take our first break. We're
going to come back with Steve Pollock right after this,
followed by Bruno, Julia and Jay Friedlander. You listen to

Speaker 10 (39:13):
What a voice, Ray Charles, bringing us back here on
inside Racing on a beautiful saturday here in southern California.
Speaker 4 (39:20):
I hope it's okay.
Speaker 10 (39:21):
Wherever you are, if you're not here in SoCal and
hope you have a great weekend, good racing happening.
Speaker 4 (39:28):
Let's bring in our man, Steve Pollock. See what he's doing. Steve,
good morning man.
Speaker 8 (39:34):
You're giving me goosebumps this morning. Richard Mandela and then
Ray Charles with Georgia. I mean, I'm just feeling amazing.
What a great way to start my day.
Speaker 4 (39:44):
Thank you.
Speaker 10 (39:45):
Yeah, it was fun. I hope it was fun for him,
certainly fun for me. And he's hilarious. He is funny.
Interesting to hear what he said about Flabby and Pratt
there at the end, and certainly proven to be the case.
But sometimes you just know, right, you can just watch
(40:06):
and see and say, well, that guy's got it. And
he was certainly right about that.
Speaker 8 (40:12):
You know, Jason, last night I finished playing Santa Anita,
and I was working on the Saturday card and I
had Turfway on, and I was playing some races at
Turfway while I was tapping the card for today and
low and bold. There's Flavi and Pratt riding in a
race at Turfway. He was on a few mounds of Turfway,
and I don't need to tell you he beat me
(40:33):
again there.
Speaker 4 (40:35):
Of course he did.
Speaker 11 (40:37):
Turfway.
Speaker 8 (40:38):
Come on, come on, Flavia.
Speaker 4 (40:40):
You know it's a little much, isn't it.
Speaker 10 (40:43):
I mean, he's he's showing up everywhere for the money,
and I give him credit for doing that. And obviously
the guy's at the top of his game. He's taking
full advantage, but he's really taking some money out of
the pockets of other jockeys. And all these little tracks
he's shown up to, they don't have much of a chance.
(41:03):
They're supposed to win these places. He's not supposed to
be there.
Speaker 8 (41:08):
Yeah, I think he got beat in a couple, but
he did win one, and the one he won he
won fairly easily. And yeah, you're right, I mean, but
with those guys, I mean, it's not a bad jockey
colony at turf Way, but it's certainly not. It's certainly
not the competition he's riding in New York and not
the competition he's riding it out here. And I'll tell
you this, you know, I read Ortiz. I've been watching
him lately down in South Florida. He's been riding tremendously
(41:31):
and just winning everything. And I just it'll be great
to see those two back together again this summer at
Saratoga because they're just both riding it's such a great
clip and tough to beat, right now Flavian's at thirty
three percent right now, This meat have been very, very
difficult to beat, no doubt.
Speaker 10 (41:49):
Yeah, he's at the top of his game and it's
a significant game. And I think he and I Read
are the top two. And I think with him getting
the eclipse and breaking the records that he did, that
will probably the spur I Rad's competitive juices a little bit.
That's how it is at the top, right, you need
to be challenged when you're the best.
Speaker 8 (42:06):
It is really Irad has been putting on a clinic
on the grass and I always thought his brother was
actually a little bit better than him. And I got
to tell you the last the last month or so again,
I've been playing all these turf races and a golf
stream and it has been I mean, I Rad has
just been sensational, one great ride after the next.
Speaker 4 (42:25):
Yeah, it's really impressive.
Speaker 10 (42:26):
There are two phenomenal jockeys riding at the peak. You
just don't see better than this, if you really really don't.
Speaker 4 (42:33):
So hey, well done by you.
Speaker 10 (42:36):
Last Monday we had President's Day and that final race
got sold. You said play it over ten to one.
He was well over ten to one.
Speaker 4 (42:47):
Got the job.
Speaker 10 (42:48):
Done thirty eight dollars winners. Pretty nice to close out
a holiday weekend.
Speaker 8 (42:53):
It was Jason, you know, it was really strange, and
you know, it just did not have a good Saturday
last week. We didn't have a good Sunday, but boom,
we had a great Monday, and then we had a
nice day yesterday thanks to our man Richard Mandela with
a horse named am Marita. Hit the little pick four yesterday,
but that was my best bet on the card yesterday.
Got that down a little bit, I think paid ten bucks,
but a real nice win on Monday, and then a
(43:16):
nice little pick four yesterday to get us going into
the weekend.
Speaker 10 (43:20):
Yeah, one hundred and sixty four dollars pick four. It's
not going to throw that back. I mean, that's that's fine,
but yeah, pick up.
Speaker 12 (43:27):
A little momentum. It sounded like he had pretty he
was pretty confident with United going into that that Breeders Cup,
and for certainly ran lights out with Flavy and Pratt.
Speaker 4 (43:42):
And I should note.
Speaker 10 (43:43):
That it was I read or Teazed that beat us
and him oh on bricks and mortar, So that was
one of their first big.
Speaker 4 (43:50):
Throwdowns in a big, big race.
Speaker 10 (43:52):
Yeah, I know, I shouldn't have said that, but you
were listening, so you heard it.
Speaker 4 (43:56):
I did.
Speaker 8 (43:57):
I was listening, and you know, I mean, I think
you and I kept talking about that race, and we
kept saying how it was a COVID year and it
was probably the worst bunch of year. We said, my goodness,
there's an A team, a B team. Is this the
C minus team? I mean, we knew the Euros were
just not that great, and really, to us was a
(44:18):
two horse race, and we really thought we had a
good chance. And I think I think the odds maker
had them at thirty to one, and we were both
licking our chops. Man fifty some onto one. I think
you told me you had doubles and pick threes going,
and you know it was one of those you know,
it could have been an absolute score of a lifetime
if that horse won that race. Especially, Yeah, hitting a
(44:39):
fifty to one is great, but hitting a fifty to
one and a Breeder's Cup race, you'll you'll never forget,
especially when you're just like, this is the horse I
like in the race, and that was the case. Mandela
had him ready. It was a Mandela Breeders Cup race
at Santa Anita, which it's hard to believe that anyone
just blindly could go off at that price with him.
But like you said the other day, you had him
on opening day on at a price horse there too.
(45:01):
And it's this game. You never know. It can be
crazy and you can get big odds, and we did
that day. We just missed on United.
Speaker 10 (45:09):
Yeah, well we haven't forgotten it. You don't forget the
big wins, but tough beats like that you don't forget either.
Speaker 4 (45:15):
But that's just all part of the game. All right,
let's jump in.
Speaker 10 (45:17):
We're a little tight on time, so you're going to
talk about a race from sant Anita today.
Speaker 8 (45:24):
Remind me which one I am, Jason. It's Race nine
down the Hill. Very excited to play these races all
the time, but especially when we get a great field
like this one. This is such a nice field that
you can make a case for three or four horses.
I'm going to go with a comebacking horse number eleven here,
Tom Horn. It's going to be my radio release for
(45:44):
the day. It's an eight to one morning line horse
of cowbread facing open company. I'll tell you what, Jason.
This horses two races, albeit five for long turf races
at Delmar, But these two turf races were absolutely dynamic.
He had a lot of trouble in second effort. They
could barely pull them up the first time. And I'd
just been super excited to see this horse come back
(46:06):
on the turf. And a couple of things are in
his favor for today, one being we've had a lot
of speed winning on this turf course right now. In fact,
if you go through the last twenty races at all distances,
ten of them have been one wire to wire and
five have been won by a horse just off the pace.
So fifteen out of twenty, Jason have been one by
(46:29):
horses that have speed or at least are tactical and
on the hillside course. So far this meet, five of
eleven races have been one wired to wire, so speed's
been really good. I got to be honest, Jason, I'm
really hoping that the thirteen horse Noble Reflection does not
get in because I think it's going to change the
complexion of the race. So let's just hope that that
doesn't happen. If it does, I'm okay with it. I
(46:49):
would still play the same horse. I would just play
it a little bit less, and obviously I would add
that one in. But I think the way the pace
is going to be the guy we've been talking about,
Flavian Pratt, Money Makes Money. It's going to be the
horse that's likely on the lead. But I'll tell you
there's just not a whole heck of a lot of speed.
We've got Maldonano, an outside post, which again we've talked
about a number of times. Outside is like the inside,
(47:12):
and a fresh Tom Horn. I could see him going
to the lead, and I can see him tracking Money
Makes Money, and I think one way or the other
that he's going to really show that he can run
a big race. Mioti's been going really, really well and
the work pattern goes way back, very very consistent work pattern.
I think this one's really ready to show what he
can do today. If we can get anywhere near eight
to one, I'm definitely in on this one. Number eleven
(47:33):
Tom Horn, I'm gonna play him to win. I'm going
to use four horses here in the exact Jason, We're
going to use the they're all right next to each
other here. The four Money Makes Money who we mentioned before,
the five a guy named Joe Face, those three year
olds down at Delmar I thought those three year olds
were below average this year. But I'm still going to
use this one on the route to sprint Angle the
(47:54):
sixth Dancing Rink A boy, This one's one. Two really
nice races in a row, and then a horse that's
maybe a little under the that's very sharp. Right now
is the eight horse Irish Royalty for none other than
a red hot Mark Glatt and Diego Herrera rides this one.
I'm going to use those four. It's the eleven Tom
Horn first and second with four, five, six and eight.
It's the eleven Tom Horn and race nine out to
(48:16):
sant Anita today.
Speaker 4 (48:18):
All right.
Speaker 10 (48:18):
I believe that was a movie with Steve McQueen played
Tom Horn. Sure, that's where that comes from. All right,
he's the eleven in race nine eleven with four, five,
six and eight. Steve, WI you the best of luck
today and tomorrow, and the next time we talk to
you it will be big cap day.
Speaker 7 (48:36):
So get ready, we'll be ready.
Speaker 8 (48:40):
I'm excited. Have a grade day everybody out there, and
we look forward to talking everybody next week.
Speaker 10 (48:46):
All right, Steve Pollock, he was ready. He's doing his
thing and Bruno de Julio doing the same thing. He's
with me right now, Bruno, good morning.
Speaker 7 (48:55):
You missed your whole opportunity with Steve Pollack.
Speaker 11 (48:58):
What's that?
Speaker 7 (49:00):
He said that slave and Brad bed him a turf way.
He should have turned around said what's the matter for you?
Speaker 4 (49:09):
All right?
Speaker 11 (49:09):
Yea with it? You just let them waltz? You know, good?
I did?
Speaker 4 (49:15):
I missed it?
Speaker 11 (49:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (49:17):
Yeah, I mean, you know, a guy like pot comes
into town, you always got to pay attention.
Speaker 4 (49:21):
Right, He's not flying in for his health.
Speaker 11 (49:27):
No, he's amazing.
Speaker 7 (49:28):
He's very, very gay. So let's talk about fair Grounds today.
Before we I'm gonna give you a quick workout analysis
for the rebel tomorrow, uh ray eight at Fairgrounds. I'm
gonna ask you a question because you're you're I've been
more tuned to the out to the East coast over
(49:50):
the last few years. But when Gary and Mary West
had horses who filled the motto out here, did you
feel that those those that combination clicked?
Speaker 4 (50:01):
No? Not really?
Speaker 7 (50:03):
Okay, So Brad Cox gets this American hope. It's an
American pharaoh that was bred by the West. They ran
him through the sale and then sell them for one
hundred and forty thousand dollars at Caenland as a baby,
So there was some lingering stuff going on there. They
sended the the motto, the motto Adam and los alamados
(50:24):
here in California. Ended up winning at Delmar in November
of twenty twenty three. He ended up just being average
here in California for some reason. Went back east and
came from dead last, changing completely his style over fair
grounds early in the meet, and you even got a
(50:45):
little price on him for a brad Cox at five
to two. Well they give them a little time again,
So this is a horse that needs flying between races,
as obvious. And he came back and worked on trying
to slip back over here to my to my workout report. Ah,
there it is. On February fifteenth, I had him work
(51:08):
in half a mile in forty nine and one. But
most like most brad Cox horses, Todd Pletcher and chat Brown,
they do a lot more than just that half mile
given here on the west on the East coast, and
he got a lot this morning. This horse went twenty
four forty seven for a minute to fourteen flat and
(51:28):
out in twenty seven for brad Cox so it was
just dragging Flora Geroux around. FLORANU comes back to ride.
My guess he ain't gonna be six to one. So
but he's a horse that one of my key horses
for the day on the grass at Fairgrounds in race eight,
(51:52):
American Hope.
Speaker 10 (51:54):
Yeah, given time by Brad Cox, this will only be
career start number six for him. But like you said,
the change his style did come from dead last last time.
And it's six to one in the morning line figure
more about three. But American Hope number nine, Race eight
at the Fairgrounds today. All right, Bruno, quickly give me
a couple of thoughts on the Rebel.
Speaker 7 (52:15):
Admiral Dennis had a really big work outside of zar
noon and then when you can get the sheet for
tomorrow that we have, you'll be able to see that
work where they ran down a couple of Kenelies down
the lane who actually we're working pretty good themselves. And
you've got Innovator.
Speaker 4 (52:31):
The.
Speaker 7 (52:33):
Number of hours the Innovator and the Dewayne Lucas barn
And you know, I have always liked the horse. I
always study had a lot of talent.
Speaker 11 (52:42):
He just kept coming.
Speaker 7 (52:42):
Keeps coming up short. However, he's the one of those
horses that I think the farther that goes further he goes,
the speed is going to be is going to be
at his advantage. And by the way, I hate to
say this, I hate to do this later, but that
American hope it's a whisper horse today affair. Yeah, we don't,
(53:06):
we don't. You know, I kind of screwed that up
talking about that.
Speaker 4 (53:10):
No it's not. He's not the whisper horse. Now, No,
you can't whisper.
Speaker 7 (53:13):
After then I looked around the corner here, there's nobody listening.
Speaker 10 (53:18):
All right, Whisper horses have run brilliantly twice in a row.
So we'll go ahead and give you that, even though
it shouldn't count. But he can be the whisper horse,
all right, Innovator Admiral Dennis. Anything else from the Rebel
of note, we.
Speaker 7 (53:33):
Haven't finished our Handicavin yet. But you know you got
madic at Roe. What do you think the madic at
Road and the Bafford Barnes coming out.
Speaker 4 (53:40):
I mean I thought he was.
Speaker 10 (53:41):
He just kind of ran around in the bob lewis
So he needs to show a lot more here. Interesting
that he's the one he sends, I'm not sure what
to make.
Speaker 7 (53:48):
Up that, So can I tell you a quick curve
before you go to jay? Yep, the medic at Road.
Bafford was gonna win the Citizens Bolt. He knew that, okay,
so could the instruction you know, because that's seen did
he do Trow do this? He knows he's going to
run him back quick, right, He's going to tell the
(54:12):
rider make sure you don't beat him up. He's getting
rights in to him. You know, if it looks like
you're going to get beat just make sure he hit
the board, you know. And because what our our our
intention is to running in the rebel right off of this.
Speaker 10 (54:28):
Oh interesting okay? And it was the Tory who definitely
understands things like that, and we'll and we'll take care
of the horse and do the right thing there.
Speaker 4 (54:36):
So interesting.
Speaker 7 (54:37):
And then to look at things like that, you know
that I could have been a work within a race.
Speaker 10 (54:42):
Mm okay, Well then then then I would upgrade his
chances and he does get I red Ortiz Junior.
Speaker 4 (54:48):
So and Bafford has won this race like thirty seven
times in the last ten years.
Speaker 7 (54:53):
So we by the way, when does I red ride
for Bob never so.
Speaker 10 (54:59):
There out good point, Bruno, I gotta let you go
appreciate it. Great information, and we'll talk to you next
week for a little more time on Big Cap Day.
Speaker 7 (55:08):
Have a great week, right, good dat, Thank.
Speaker 4 (55:12):
You, Bruno de Julio doing his thing.
Speaker 10 (55:14):
Let's bring on Jay Friedlander and give you a couple
more before we finish the show here, Jay, good morning.
Speaker 9 (55:19):
Good morning, Jason. Hey, I've got an upset pick for
you in the Rebel tomorrow. Let's look down at the bottom.
Number thirteen tis tastic with that other Ortiz brother, Jose Ortiz,
riding for Steve Asthmersson. Steam's only been a nine percent meet,
but with Jose thirty one percent. Jose ran the best
race of this horse's career. This one's beaten the favorite
Sandman on the square and Steve throws his own stunt
(55:41):
off Keith Asthmus in the make room for Jose.
Speaker 4 (55:45):
That's say excepting, yeah, the horse is interesting.
Speaker 10 (55:48):
He had a old trouble last time too, as did
Sandman in that Southwest, and he comes back here, you know.
Speaker 4 (55:53):
Having worked well.
Speaker 10 (55:54):
So okay, ' tis tastic one to watch in the
Rebel again. That's tomorrow, folks, because they changed.
Speaker 4 (56:00):
It up on us.
Speaker 10 (56:00):
All right, let's go to today. You want to start
at Santa Anita or Gulf Stream, You got to.
Speaker 4 (56:04):
Just jump right, let's start.
Speaker 9 (56:05):
Yeah, we'll start at Gulfstream. We're going to go to
RaSE nine here. And I want to mention that the
favorite Doro Teo is out, so that makes the new
default favorite number three. Majorca certainly had a nice win
down at or a nice second down to Tampa Bay,
but second time routing Todd plettro only get the eleven
percent wins.
Speaker 4 (56:25):
And the one time.
Speaker 9 (56:25):
This one ran a golfter, the one time this ran
a goldfstream. Fifth nine likes back. Let's try to beat him.
The one I like is down near the bottom, and
that's number nine. Love him or Liam? Love him or Liam?
From the bill mottbarn has had a couple of decent races.
Looks like he's been crying out for more room and
gets it today gets a mile and an eighth gets
a Mott stable rider Jason Junior Alvarado aboard, and I
(56:47):
think at six to one, this one's got a nice
upset shot. Number nine Love him or Liam?
Speaker 4 (56:52):
Yeah? I agree?
Speaker 10 (56:53):
Blinkers go on today and I think he does want
this extra distance. He's six to one in the morning line.
I think you get close to that the nine love
Them or Liam in the race nine at Gulf Stream Park,
Race nine, number nine in the Exotics.
Speaker 9 (57:09):
Yeah, it's my trifecta. I'm not going to just give
out the numbers in interest of time. Nine with one, two, three, five,
six eight with all and there's a couple of up
and comers in there at a price, and then with
Dorotillo out. The other trifecta is three to nine with
three nine with all, So chance to have it twice.
Speaker 10 (57:26):
There you go three nine with three nine with all
as the second ticket there in the Gulf Stream Park.
In race nine, let's jump to the great race Place,
San Anita.
Speaker 9 (57:34):
Yeah, we're gonna go to race six here and we're
gonna look.
Speaker 4 (57:38):
At this race.
Speaker 9 (57:40):
The favorite here Veritius Aquitus actually beat my choice here
Hendy about three or four back. But Crown Me turned
the tables last time despite some trouble. I had some issues,
was tight in there and came back and got him
held on gamely at the end. Crown Magic was the
only one in this entire field that's one over Santa
(58:01):
Anita liking number eight Crown Magic with Frankie Alvarado aboard.
I like him a little better than Kyle Frey is
a rider personally.
Speaker 10 (58:08):
All right, And again that's that's RaSE six at Santa Anita, right,
RaSE six Crown Magic. Yeah, Timmy, he's having a pretty
nice meet.
Speaker 9 (58:20):
Go ahead, Yeah, no, we got a trifecta here. Let's
play a two dollars trifector with Crown Magic on top,
eight with three four six ten with three four six ten,
and then we're not going to use the three on
top and the backup ticket four six ten with eight
with three four six ten, four six ten with three
four six ten with number eight Crown Magic. Nice win
bet on Crown Magic and nice win bet on love more.
Speaker 4 (58:40):
Liam. There you go, Crown Magic.
Speaker 10 (58:42):
The eight in race six at Santa Anita today should
go off.
Speaker 4 (58:46):
Right around three o'clock. Jay, I know you're gonna be
watching the Saudi Cup in about half an hour. Enjoy
that and we will talk to you on Big Cap.
Speaker 9 (58:53):
Day, all right.
Speaker 11 (58:55):
Thank you, Jason, Hey, Hey.
Speaker 4 (58:57):
