Speaker 9 (03:31):
John Henry and now it's time for inside racing. A
full hour of coverage on everything going on in the
sport of kings here in southern California and around the country.
And here's your host, Jason Levine.
Speaker 8 (03:42):
Yeah, hey, thank you Mark Morris. I am Jason Levelin.
This is Inside Racing. Let's do this. It was February.
Let's see where we start. Well, I'm having a good morning,
probably a better warning and some folks involved in the
(04:02):
in racing. We'll start with Peter Miller not having a
very good month or so two for thirty seven at
Santa Anita and suspend it again yesterday for yeah trama doll,
which I think some of you probably have used, and
he claims one of his grooms was using and then
it got onto one of the horses, and you know,
(04:23):
there you go, so requite true, But boy, when it
keeps happening to the same people, you gotta shake your
head a little bit, say, okay, so he has horses entered.
I don't quite understand the suspension thing and horse racing.
It's always been one of the most ridiculous penalties in
any sport. But his horses can run this weekend at
(04:46):
Santa Anita and Oaklawn. And then I guess the suspension
starts next week whatever. So yeah, yeah, not a good
twenty twenty five for Pete Miller, but anyway, we'll move on.
I don't know I opened with him, but yeah, well
(05:08):
that's kind of emblematic of a lot of things going
on in racing. Another guy that's been struggling. Since We're
gonna go ahead and start with that. I've got a
note card here, so I might as well go for it.
John Sadler, check out these stats. These are wild had
forty four starters at sant Anita going into yesterday, only
(05:28):
three winners. That's seven percent. That's really bad. But ten
times this horse is ran second and nine times they
ran third, so he's exactly fifty percent in the money.
Just can't win. That figures to change, you see numbers
like that, That win percentage figures to go up. So
(05:48):
just throwing that out there for you. Yeah, but three
for forty four for him, not so good. On the
other hand, let's highlight a couple of trainers who are
doing very well who you should take a second look
at when you see their horses enter today and tomorrow.
For sure, Bob has Junior seven for thirty for three
(06:09):
seconds and seven thirds, so he's seventeen for thirty in
the money and twenty three percent winners. Bob Hast Junior.
Mark Glatt continues to roll twenty four percent winners, and
he's sixty two percent in the money. Strong in fact
(06:32):
first and second he's fifty percent, so half his starters
run first or second at this meet. Mark Glatt, that's dominant.
And Mike Pipe out of nowhere, seven for twenty five
for twenty eight percent for Mike Pipe. Not a lot
of horses in that barn, but so far they're firing.
So always good to take note of who's hot when
(06:54):
they're hot, and who's not, and whose fortunes might be changing,
and who you just want to stay away from. That
popped up as I was going through the car the
other day and I thought, all right, let's let's throw
that out there. Okay, what's happening and what else has
happened on Let's see Santa Anita today. The big news
(07:15):
is that all the turf races will stay on the turf,
and there are six of them, so fun card for
me and Steve love the turf racing far preferred turf
racing to dirt racing these days in Southern California. It's
not even close. We've been talking about this for about
five years now, but it's about fifty to fifty. It
(07:37):
might even be tilted a little bit more towards turf
and fuller fields, much more interesting races, more for the
jockeys to do so. Anyway, six of the ten races
on the turf today, the turf is listed as good.
There was quite a bit of rain in Santa Anita area,
Arcadia area Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and too Friday morning, so
(08:00):
that'll be a little bit interesting look for that in
the PPS. If a few horses have experience on somewhat
of an off turf, most don't because they've been running
in Southern California, but some well, so that's something to
think about. The feature today a ten race card is
the San Marcos Mile and a quarter on the turf.
And I saw a little note that this was the
(08:21):
first ever Grated States run at Santa Anita on the
turf to San Marcos. Did not know that. And this
race has a very serious history and a particular one
for me, kind of interesting. Nineteen fifty nine, that's before
I was born. The legendary Roundtable won this race fast
forwards nineteen seventy one. That's the year I came to
(08:43):
California from New York and fell in love with racing.
And one of the horses that did it for me
was Cougar Too. Cougrew the second had a really really
long tail Prepreciera's from Chile. Charlie Whittingham trained brilliant handicap
horse for many many years. He won this race in
nineteen seventy one. That was one of my first favorite
(09:05):
horses that kind of got me hooked into racing. And
then another one all time top I guess three for
me probably favorite nineteen eighty first year of college saw
him many, many many times. John Henry, the legendary John Henry,
of course won this race. If it's a great at
steak on the turf at San Anita, he won it.
(09:27):
That's ironclad. And then there's a bunch of older horses
in the race today, so thinking about that, and a
few eight year olds have won this. Richard Mandela won
it in nineteen ninety seven. Was San pitt It was
a great horse, really really good horse. And then in
two thousand and six, the third year of doing this
(09:49):
particular radio show. Another favorite of mine and a lot
of people in southern California because he just kept at
it and kept winning big races. The tin Man as
an eight year old won this race. Another brilliant training
job by one of the greatest trainers to ever work
with a race horse, Richard Mandela, is still doing his thing,
(10:10):
as we know, beyond crushing three Bob efforts and the
uh once you did it twice Libre and the Santa
Monica anyway, So pretty rich history of the San Marcos
and it goes as today's seventh race favorite will be
(10:30):
the sixth. Truly quality, I guess the only issue with
that horse is cutting back in distance, which is odd
to say for a horse going a mile and a quarter.
But this horse is really stepped up once the connection
started going really long mile and a half, et cetera.
So truly quality, I think is the quality of this field.
I don't think the mile and a quarter is going
(10:51):
to be an issue. I don't think that kind of
cutback is really that hard when you have a good horse.
But mile and a half my own three eighths, mile
and a half, my own three eighths, that's what This
horse has been doing consistently now since April, so it
is a little different. It's also a horseword experience on
good turf and has run very well on it a
(11:14):
few times, so that's a plus. Interesting horse here at
a price would be the five atitlne ten to one
on the morning line. I think you'd probably get somewhere
near that. And that man Hector Burrios is a board
for John Sheriffs who is struggling. If this meet John
Sheriff's is Hector Burios is not struggling and definitely not
struggling on the turf. Attidlon has speed where there's not
(11:35):
a lot of that in this race, so I think
he's going to be very well positioned early on in
this race. And as a first time four year old
he has room to improve, whereas a lot of these
six seven year old types we've seen what they can do.
But Attidlon, there's there's more in the tank there. So
I'm interested in the five and here the seven divin
(11:58):
propose course, it has burned a lot of money in
his five race American career. Wanted even money, lost it,
even money won at two to one, lost it two
to one. Lost at three to one, maybe about three
or four to one. Today for Phill the motto and
then the outside horse, Easter is stretching out to a
(12:20):
mile and a quarter, so the opposite of truly quality heat.
We have to see if Easter can go this far.
Antonio for Sue, also for Philled, the motto, of course
is not one in quite a while. Has it won
since well over a year ago in the San Gabriel
at San Anita. Good race, eight horse race, good race,
(12:41):
and like I said, rich history in this one. So
interested in race seven. The San Marcos on a ten
race card starts at twelve thirty out at Santa Anita
and finishes up right around five o'clock, where it's going
to be beautiful and it's going to be a very
nice day out there once the rains come and clear
everything out. It couldn't be prettier sent So make it
(13:02):
out there, go for it, and you're going to be
rewarded out of town. Interestingly, Gulf Stream has twelve races,
some of them are pretty good. It's a pretty good
betting card there. The Ladies Turf Sprint is the feature
a mix of synthetic turf and dirt racing always a
little difficult for the handicappers. The string races together at
Gulf Stream because of that. Oaklawn has some good weather
(13:23):
for a change, and they have the Bayakoa Mile on
a sixteenth there. Bruno was going to talk about Oaklawn
a little bit later. Aqueduct has a couple of New
York bread Steaks, but they only drew five horses each,
so they're early in the card. And the big race,
the most interesting race and the best card out of
town is that Tampa Bay Downs, which was included in
(13:44):
the decoupling bill down Florida. Not good news for racing
in Florida and for Tampa Bay. But anyway, the good
news is good card today and they have the big
three year old race today. It's the Sam F. Davis.
I probably don't know who that was. I wondered about that.
I should have looked it up and I didn't. But regardless,
(14:06):
very good race today. It goes as race eleven. Yeah,
I think it's eleven on a twelve race card down
at at Tampa Bay. Yeah, Race eleven my only sixteenth.
I really like this race. I spent a lot of
time digging into this race. Loved the Triple Crown trail,
seeing who's stepping up, who's you know worthwhile. The horse
(14:29):
I'm most interested in here is Poster, who you probably
remember from winning the Remsen. He went turf to dirt
that day from Owen Hardy, I said, I thought he
was going to be able to get the job done
based on those two impressive turf races. It's not easy
to break your maiden going two turns on the grass.
Didn't do it again. He did that. Then he went
to the dirt and won the Remsen at five to one,
(14:49):
so that was good that day. He's had a nice break.
I've been training at Turfway Park for quite a while,
heads down to Florida now and has been there a
little while. Shouldn't be at climane it maybe, but I
think Poster is going to be very tough in here.
He's got tactical speed and just a very very nice horse.
So I like him. I think the horse to watch
(15:10):
him here that might spring the upset. I'm not sure
what the price is going to be. Is the number three?
John Hancock. John Hancock watched the tape on this horse's
debut as impressive a sprint win as you're going to see.
This horse did everything, broke beautifully from the gate, showed
(15:30):
excellent early speed, got the lead easily, was able to
relax on the lead, let a horse come to him
on the turn, and then when the jockey shook the
reins a little bit, Sammy Camacho, this horse went okay,
it's time to go and that was it. Race was
over and he was able to just wrap up on
him at least one hundred yards from the wire, so
he really couldn't be more impressive opening up and that
(15:53):
was six furlong. It's got to go two turns today.
But I'll look at the pedigree shows that this horse
is a half brother to the Mayor Speech who we
saw run in southern California, ran second to Swiss Skydiver,
won the Grade one Ashland at Keenland and was a really,
really nice filly. So the two turns is definitely in
(16:14):
there for this Brad Cox runner. And look who takes
the ride today. Look who flies down to Tampa Bay.
He did it last week. He's back Flavian prep. So
you know they told him this force is serious and
his agents said, okay, they watched the tape, I'm sure.
So very very interesting horse number three, John Hancock, the
(16:35):
two Treaty of Rome is interesting. That's a cool more
horse trained by Chad Brown. Kind of a grinder, a
little bit like Sierra Leone. I thought he's good. He's interesting. Well,
Doug O'Neil as a horse. He escaped the Bob Baffert
contingent out here in southern California. After break his maiden
went to Remington. The horse was six wide on the
(16:57):
first turn, battled for the lead halfway through, the tired late,
but should get a much better trip today. Kind of
pretty nice horse here. Doctor Rubin m so interested to
see what he does. Not sure against this field. He's
gonna run third and here at a price. Oh and
Almighty won the prep for this race, also second in
mistake at Churchill. Of course, it's very good speed. Blinkers
(17:20):
go on today, he read or teases up after being
disqualified last time for almost putting horse over the rail
on the turn. Typically rad So just a really really
good race here at Tampa Bay to Sam F. Davis.
They have a good card down there. Bruno is going
to talk more about this race, which is really important
for these young horses to see what you see in
the mornings to go with what they've done in the afternoon.
(17:41):
So a lot going on and excited about excited about
that one to also say that one of the great
owners in the game has passed away, the Aga Khan
look him up pretty wild and I have to say
one of the better experiences racing experiences I had was
watching his undefeated Phillies Zarkava win the Arc de Trient
(18:07):
Missus Race and Jason and I were there that day
light rain was falling. Undefeated going into the race taking
on the boys. Would she be able to finish her
career undefeated and win the big race? And not only
did she do it, she did it like an absolute champion.
Was able to meet the Aga Khan briefly after the race,
(18:27):
but that was just quite an experience. She was one
of the all time greats in Europe. He owned many
of them in a sixty year career. Classy gentleman and
no longer with us, but certainly bred some of the
great horses in European racing history. And I was able
to see one of them, which was great and really
(18:47):
an exciting experience. As Missus Race and Jason said, when
she made her move at longshot. Oh oh, it's over.
She did it and this was two furlongs from wire.
She was dad impressive. That was fun. Okay, let's bring
on our man, Steve Pollock. He's got a lot to
talk about. He's on a roll the past two or
(19:08):
three weeks. He said he's going to get on a roll,
and he did. And it's at the windows and also
contest wise, Steve, good morning.
Speaker 10 (19:17):
Good morning Jason. What a well rounded guy.
Speaker 8 (19:20):
You are.
Speaker 10 (19:21):
You into the park, You're all over the world, the
world traveler man, a man incredible.
Speaker 8 (19:27):
Yeah, it's been fun. I didn't anticipate it. I was
not a big traveler as a young man, mostly because
they didn't have any money. It's kind of hard to travel.
If you don't have any money, you can do it,
but it's not a lot of fun. Things have changed,
and I also had another job that allowed me to
go to Europe a bunch of times. So yeah, it's
(19:47):
been really fun. And try to take in some racing
here and there. The funniest one I think I told
you years ago. I went to the horse races once
in South Africa. He took the family there and I
expected it to be kind of a big deal and
there was like three hundred people there. It was nothing,
and it's one of their big tracks too. You'll see
it in the PPS. They run a lot of great
(20:09):
races there. And we showed up and the kids were teenagers.
They're like, what is this the track? I said, yeah,
I think so. There was just I don't know, it
was nothing to it. It's kind of interesting. You could
just walk around do whatever you wanted. It was kind
of like almost like a country fair type atmosphere, and
I was like, okay, fine. We saw a couple of
(20:29):
races and kids I think had a winter there, so
you never know. You just never know, but it's always
good to experience those things and see different stuff. But
the Arc de Triomph, I've been to a few of them,
and just what a day that is. I mean, as
great a day as you're ever going to get in
racing anywhere. I think they have five graded stakes before
it and then the Arc and they do it up
(20:51):
right over there, so anybody gets a chance to do that.
Of course, it's in Paris, which is also one of
the great cities, so it's quite a que an experience
to have that opportunity. So I've been very, very lucky
for sure. Quick note for you, you're going back to
the NHC National Handicapping Contest where you spent a lot
(21:13):
of time early on in that tournament, and you're back,
so congratulations and go win it.
Speaker 10 (21:20):
Well, I'll tell you what, Jason, for those who haven't
been at that tournament, I was. I was either at
or in the first ten or eleven of those. When
I was playing in contests, I had a couple of
partners that we were playing with at that time. And
you know, my main partner, Ken Daniels, and I did
well in that tournament a few times. But we you know,
(21:43):
I just stopped playing tournaments when my son was born.
I just thought it was more I was not cost
effective for me to go over there all the time.
I just would would rather play for my house. And
since i've been doing the show with you here, it's
thirteen plus years, I have not really been a tournament player.
But my son got you know, I was in college.
Now things are different and I'm not coaching baseball or
(22:05):
anything like that, so I started playing tournaments again. I
tried to qualify last year for the NFC and did
not do it, and last week I was finally able
to break through and hold on in a very exciting
finish down at golf Stream. Actually what happened was there
were four horses that could win, four different people too.
Guys had twenty to one's and then one guy had
(22:25):
a four to one shot and I had a four
to one shot, and they came for home and none
of their three horses were firing. My horse actually ran third,
no change. I had to lead and it stuck. So
it was a good day. Had a couple of nice
winners at Santa Anita that day, and a couple of
nice winners then at Gulf Stream, and you know, was
able to pull it off. So I am headed there
and looking forward to it, I believe the middle of March.
(22:48):
And until then, you know, we've got a pretty good
day of racing. Today, we do.
Speaker 8 (22:53):
And I know you were happy like I was to
see that six of the ten races are on the grass,
so that was good. Then the reins came. I had
to think, uh oh, but they're all on the grass today,
they did not run on it yesterday, and the turf
is good and ready to roll today.
Speaker 10 (23:08):
Yeah. The only race I would question, folks, and for
me I'm going to go with the same horse one
way or the other. Is the hill race. I would
say that decision might be made later that they might
put that on the flat, but it'll be certainly the
same distance. And boy, what a different race that is.
You know, on the hill to the flat. We've talked
about that before. But keep your eyes open on that, folks.
Make sure you're not looking up at the hill and
(23:29):
you see the post start and they're on the flat.
That would be someone will do that today.
Speaker 8 (23:34):
That happens. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that happens. You weren't
You were that unaware. Tough, need to be a little
bit more on top of things. But we're doing what
we can to help here, and you've been doing that
very nicely on the show and just in general. Winners
all over the place, and a couple of big tries too.
(23:54):
I know you had six winners last Sunday and a
couple of those keyeds and huge trifectors. One paid two hundred,
the other paid three thirteen. That was Ce Singer thirteen
dollars winn and those three hundred dollars tries are nice.
Speaker 10 (24:08):
That'll keep you going, yes, will, And you know I
usually play those the same way, Jason. Those are usually
one over three type of keys, one over four type
of keys, So it's either a twelve dollars or twenty
four dollars wager if you consistently play them the way
I have it written down on the sheet. And again
I don't necessarily always say to play the try, but
(24:30):
I sure like to do that. And again that's what
I do on the air, you know, the one byte three,
one byte four type of tries in these grass races.
Speaker 8 (24:37):
Yeah, and that was a very nice score. The free
play came in. It was a thirteen dollar winner and
a couple double digit winners last week, including I'm going
to say the closer of the meat so far, and
it's going to be tough to beat. Actually, Call Sign
seven was probably four lengths back with what one hundred
yards to run and up at the wire.
Speaker 10 (25:02):
So that was one of those number shots during that race, Jason, where, Wow,
what a great race this horse is going to run
and not get there? Man oh man, he really ran
unbelievable and then all of a sudden they hit the
wire and I thought, oh my gosh, did he maybe
win that race? And you know, Frank Marimandi doesn't call
too many wrong. I think he's a fabulous race caller.
(25:22):
And he was even shot. That horse got up, and
I'll tell you.
Speaker 8 (25:26):
What, he made the mistake of saying they're not going
to get him.
Speaker 10 (25:30):
Yeah, yes he did, Yes he did. May mean, but
something like that happens. I mean, it seemed like one
hundred to one shot, you know at the sixte pole.
But that used to happen all the time with Edded
because Rispoli rode that horse on Berto rode that horse
just like Eddie used to ride. Where you take all
the way back and you're all the way on the
(25:51):
rail and you're saving all the ground and you swing
right out of the turn, right into the middle of
the track, and it just those horses get all the momentum,
they've saved all the ground, they have the most energy,
and they're just able to run faster. That and the
fact that the you know, the front runner got a
little bit tired. I mean, that's the only reason that
horse was able.
Speaker 8 (26:07):
To get up.
Speaker 10 (26:08):
But that was just a fabulous ride by a fabulous
surf ighter rum burger. Rispoli.
Speaker 8 (26:13):
Yeah, that was we'll call it perfectly timed. You know,
he did need the leader to basically stop. But that
horse went very fast early and opened up and did
everything but win the race, but got really really tired
the last furlong or so and he was able to
nail them. So always good to be on the winning
side of that. I think that knocked somebody out of
(26:37):
to pick six, and that would have been about as
bad a beat as as you're gonna get. So there's
always two sides of the story and horse racing, and
you're on the right side of that one, which is
way better than than the bad beat. We've both had
plenty of those, as everybody listening, So we don't need
to go down that road. Let's stay stay focused on
the positive here, and there's there's been quite a bit
(26:58):
of that for you, for the folks playing along, So
that's all good. What else we got anything about the
track or any trainers or anything. Before we jump into
your race, I mentioned a couple of the trainers, you know,
real quickly.
Speaker 10 (27:11):
I don't want to make this too long because I'm
going to make a point with this. These Northern California
races that have been rescheduled. Here, folks, if you're playing
the pick five and the pick six, do not use
a lot of horses. I've got how many races do
I have marked? I'm marking each one of them in detail,
because at the beginning I didn't know. I was like
most of the people. But what's happening is Jason, for example,
(27:36):
twenty one twenty two, now after yesterday sprint races at
five and a half to six furlongs, no horses have
paid ten dollars in those races.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Not one, oh my god, one.
Speaker 10 (27:48):
Has paid that. Okay, So what I want to say
is is make sure you're not spreading in those races, Jason.
You've got to narrow it down. Horses that have had
works over the track, the faster horses, they are winning.
The horses would speed are winning these races. Now, I
will say there's a little bit of a difference. There's
only been ten route races. But in ten route races,
we've seen four or five, let's see, five out of
(28:10):
those ten have been won by a horse that paid
double digits, which in this case is not in the twenties,
but eleven, twelve, fourteen, eighty, fifteen, sixty, So in that
price range, those races are more playable to me from
an individual standpoint, and if you're playing horses and trying
to do it like I'm doing it, where you're trying
(28:31):
to make money on these races, those are races that
you want to look at from a straight that standpoint,
but from a standpoint of the pick five, which is
so important, and the pick six, these are races, these
sprint races that you do not want to spread in.
You've got to narrow it down and I can't imagine
using more than two because the payouts have really become lower, Jason.
(28:52):
Even though these fields are decent with eight to nine horses,
we're just not seeing prices in these races. So I
just can't can't tell the fans enough. You've got to
be more specific, narrow in and do not spread. And
if you're planning on spreading or you don't have a
clue in those races, then I might not play that
pick five, well pick four, because it's just not value.
If you need to use three or four horses, you're
(29:15):
putting too much money in to what the payouts is
going to be.
Speaker 8 (29:18):
Yeah, okay, and again this is these are the lower
level races, lower than we've ever seen at Santa Anita,
but were again, we're just in a different time right now.
This was an adjustment, we'll call it that anyway. It's
also the end of Northern California racing. That's the adjustment.
It's over. And in fact, Santa Rosa this week was
(29:38):
the last. We call it the last I don't know,
something to fall, the last domino to fall. They did
not ask the race dates. Yeah, so they're done. So
it's over. That's it. They killed racing in Northern California.
It is done. And it happened quickly too, so boy anyway,
(29:59):
so some of those So.
Speaker 10 (30:00):
It's incredible for me, Jason, that's been my second track
for years.
Speaker 8 (30:04):
I mean I.
Speaker 10 (30:06):
Watched Russell Bays' entire career and all the jockeys that
came through there, and including Juan Hernandez. I mean, it
just is amazing that that place is gone. I mean,
for me, it was in between fifteen minutes I was
playing every Southern California race and then fifteen minutes later,
no matter what, even if it was a five or
(30:26):
six horse field, I was watching that Golden Gate race.
And it has been my second track by far. And
you know, things have changed the last couple of years.
When they weren't running as many turf races. I didn't
love the synthetic. I didn't love the mood the synthetic
which they did at Golden Gate. Obviously they eliminated bay
meadows and just little by little it had been less
(30:49):
and less. But for that to be gone, it's incredible.
And you know, again, I think for southern California, this
is a good break for us because we have some
bigger fields and you know, maybe these route races are
worth playing if you can get you know, these twelve
or fourteen dollars horses, But the spread races aren't adding
much aren't adding much value, that's for sure.
Speaker 8 (31:12):
Yeah, all right, let's jump into the race you chose today.
Out of the ten and six of them on the grass,
you ended up on race.
Speaker 10 (31:21):
I did race seven, which is the San Marcos Jason,
and I heard you mentioned that at Tielan earlier. And
this is a dangerous horse against older and anytime you
see Barrios on a price horse, it's it's a horse
that you want to take a second look at. I
think he's in a little bit tough in here today,
and you know we will see. You also mentioned there's
not a whole heck of a lot of pace in here,
(31:42):
and I do agree with that as well. All the
speed in this race, it's probably going to be nine
to eleven turbo. I think Mike Smith will go. He's
got the fastest early case numbers on Bristnet EP and
has had some races where he's gone. And they start
down that hill, so they usually go a little faster
earlier than you think they're going, whether the run up
(32:03):
is whatever that is, but they're usually going at a
pretty decent clip by the time they straighten up coming
off of that hill. And you know, I think it's
going to set up for somebody coming late at a
mile and a quarter with that turf being a little bit,
you know, with having a little bit of give. And
I'll tell you I like the eight horse Easter and
I know he's a seven year old old boy, but
he has been facing two of the better horses, and
(32:24):
certainly the best horse that we have had. I mean,
if you look at his pps all of the last
five races he's faced none other than Johannes and I'll
tell you what, in none of those races has he
been embarrassed. And if you're a sheet player.
Speaker 2 (32:36):
Like I am.
Speaker 10 (32:37):
His numbers have not changed, which is incredible. At seven
years old, Diamanto has had this horse and absolutely perfectly.
And if you look at his Seabiscuit win from twenty
twenty three and as San Gabriel win at twenty twenty three,
he's running the same numbers in all of those races.
It's just like same number, same number, same number, same number.
And if you watch his tape in the last two races,
(33:00):
he was actually flying at Johannas and Mi Here Mono
Ramon and really has come home fast. So the mile
and a quarters ad a little bit of a question
yet is but remember they start on that hill, and
I don't know this is a true mile and a
quarter race. So I've always thought, you know that they
can run this race. Horses that can run a mile
and an eighth And this horse certainly was running great
at the end of that last race. So not that
(33:21):
concern with the outside post because this horse is a
little bit slowerly and I think with a little bit
of given the track, I think this guy really comes
running late and I'm going to play him to win.
I'm going to use three horses in the exotics I'm
going to use the one dicey Mocar who ran a
buried race last time coming out of that Johannes race
as well. I think this horse is a little is
heading back in the right direction three and four races ago.
(33:43):
Those races are good enough to put this horse in
the mix. I'm going to certainly use true quality. Who
is the horse to beat coming off of those three wins.
I will tell you that his numbers are no better
than the numbers on Easter, very very similar numbers. And
obviously this horse is going to be a giant favorite.
But make no mistake these Jonathan Thomas horses, they look
(34:04):
great and they're all running, and this guy being fresh,
he's going to be very tough in this race. And
then Divine propos, you mentioned how disappointing this horse has been.
The disappointing thing for this horse has been the trip.
He just can't seem to get a trip. He's been
buried in behind horses on the inside and the last
two races and very slow paces and just has not
been able to get out and run. I think he
(34:25):
does that today, and I think he runs a better race.
But I like the eight Easter I'm going to play
him to win, and I'll play that same normal try
that I've been playing for six dollars a pop, using
the one six and seven, playing the eight first and
second Easter with one six and seven in the San
Marco's race seven out of sant Anita.
Speaker 8 (34:44):
Today, there you go the feature going with the outside
runner from barn that has won a few turf races
in the last four or five years, full Tomato, and
that Jackie Antonio Frisu has been a board the last
I think eight, so he definitely knows this horse. Like
you said, is it a real mile on a quarter
when they go down the hill like that? Not really?
(35:05):
So it's the eighth Eastern with the one six and
seven race seven out at Santa Anita on a nice card.
Been a nice roll, Steve, keep it going and uh
quick pick tomorrow's game. I don't know if you care
or not, but it is a big one. Who do
we like?
Speaker 10 (35:25):
Gosh, I gotta be honest with you. I hit the
winner of last year's Super Bowl, and my record has
been so bad on this show that I might retire
right there.
Speaker 8 (35:33):
Jason, Okay, let it go.
Speaker 10 (35:35):
I'm retiring on football picks based on my I had
an zero to four streak going and it was really
important to get my selection out for those gamblers who
really know that I really don't know what I'm doing.
So once I broke that streak, it's it's no longer relevant.
Speaker 8 (35:48):
You're done. That's fine. I appreciate that. That's that's that's
well played. To stick to the horses. And a reminder
that the first post tomorrow at San Anita is eleven
AM shortened card that begins at eleven, so that everything
is done before the Chiefs and the Eagles take the field. Steve,
appreciate it. We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 10 (36:10):
Everybody, have a great day out there, enjoy yourself and
enjoy the game tomorrow.
Speaker 8 (36:14):
All right. Steve Pollock doing his thing. Bruno de Julia
o'conap on the other side doing his followed by Jay Friedlander.
This inside racing, and I'm eleven fifth.
Speaker 4 (36:27):
Every day and every we will be together.
Speaker 3 (36:32):

O.
Speaker 8 (38:42):
My god, oh good birthday of this week. The legendary
Bob Marler would have been eighty.
Speaker 10 (38:55):
Path.
Speaker 8 (38:55):
I'm around what a band he was able to see
the Whaler many many times, did not see them with Bop,
just missed that. But what a cracking band that that
was and is. And they're still around them where they
bring it and plenty of good songs there too, no
doubt about it. Quite the catalog in a short period
(39:16):
of time. I don't think the movie did injustice, that's
for sure, but the music does. Just play any Bob
Marley song and you're right in the zone there all
right where we at? Oh you heard that last spot?
Try Level Office Support. If you have a business and you,

(39:59):

can again focus on the big picture, get your business
rolling and moving, and really push things forward, knowing that
all that stuff is taken care of, which gives you
a piece of mind. And we all need that, right Bruno.
Peace of mind?
Speaker 5 (40:17):
Now serenity.
Speaker 8 (40:19):
Now I don't think of serenity when I think of you,
But what the hell right?
Speaker 5 (40:24):
Yeah? Yeah, you know, and what I'm handygapping? I like
that TV in the background and Seinfeld is on most
of the time during the afternoon, and you get to
relise some of those some of those great skits they did,
especially the one with Kramer that overhears that somebody talking
about horse betting, betting a horse and the mother was
(40:51):
a mutter and that's right, and you know, and the
whole whipping thing, and it's just just hilarious. So serenity.
Now when it comes to tranquility, there you go speaking
of you know, the hush tips that people you know,
don't you love going to the track and some guys
(41:12):
can come and tell you something his eyes a wide open.
It comes up to you, I heard three and he's
whispering with nobody around, and even may even do the
left and right look to make sure nobody's he's dropping
on that conversation.
Speaker 8 (41:27):
Because that's the key information. That yep, that was to me,
that was an automatic throwout. Whatever worse they told me,
that was the worst that I just tossed immediately. That's
my advice on that one.
Speaker 5 (41:43):
It was there was a guy. There was a guy
at del Mar that I always was like right up
behind me over my shoulder when I was betting, or
that if I was anywhere near the paddock, and talking
to people. He'd be over there, right over my shoulder, listening.
So one day I stood right by the paddock and
I saw him coming around, and I stood like a statue.
(42:04):
I didn't move, I didn't talk, I didn't do anything.
The guy walked around me and walked away. About a
week later, he did the same thing in the paddock.
He's walking around the paddock. I just stood there like
a statue. He turned them our way. So some of
these people are like lizards. They just you know, react
to movement and speech.
Speaker 8 (42:20):
You know. So you're at the.
Speaker 5 (42:21):
Track and you don't want anybody to bother you just
sit there like a statue and people will leave you alone.
Speaker 8 (42:27):
Yeah, it puts them in an awkward position. They're trying
to you know, they're trying to pick something up and
you're not giving them anything. So eventually they have to
move on. Yeah. I feel bad for folks like that,
but hey, you know, everybody's different. You have to do
what you got to do to survive. Some people don't
want to put the work in. They want you to
do it. And hey, that's what we're doing here though, right,
(42:48):
trying to put in some work for the folks and
give them, give them a little help, give them some
things to think about, some things to learn. I talked
about the big race down at Tampa Bay to Sam Davis,
which sometimes is a good race. Often there's only one
or two horses and it's not a big deal. I
thought this one was really good. And I think there's
a couple of horses down there that we're going to
(43:08):
hear from on the Triple Ground trail. So I know
you wanted to add some thoughts to that race down
at Tampa Bay today.
Speaker 10 (43:17):
Well.
Speaker 5 (43:17):
Absolutely, I love watching replays because you know, there's there's
so many ways to skin the cap when you're handicapped
and you can look at number. It's like, you know,
Steve it so eloquently speaks of handicabbing. He's very very good.
I should call it, we should call him the professor
who's never been named the professor in racing. I don't know,
(43:38):
but but Steve Pollock is a professor of handicapping, and
he talks about numbers and things like that. I believe
in all of the things that he speaks of. But
I also want to add a different part of my
of my own senses to be able to help handicap,
and that's using my eyes. And sometimes or horses that
(44:03):
may not have the numbers. And of course we see
there's horses and sometimes no matter what they do, people
follow them blindly. It's like a cult. And you know,
but there's horses that people don't put a lot of
stock in and because their eyes, because their numbers don't
tell them. And Poster is exactly that kind of horse,
(44:24):
number seven. I know you like them. I love them.
What I saw in him is a season animal that
gets sick. You even get a dog, sometimes a dog
even as a puppy, he gets sick. You know, he understands,
(44:45):
he knows how to play the game. And posters like that.
The first start at Ellis Park was very impressive because
I was watching the Ellis Park video and you know
how they put the mouse per hour, some of the
tracks put the mouse per hour. He went like thirty
nine miles per hour early on the first turn, slowed
(45:05):
it down the thirty seven seven, but on turning for
home he went thirty seven, thirty eight, thirty nine miles
per hour, and he pulled himself up in the stretch.
So that can look negative to people, or they don't
really notice it. Oh, he was slowing down, he was tiring.
He was actually pulled himself up because he's like, I'm done,
(45:27):
I'm finished, I got dropped.
Speaker 8 (45:29):
I gotta do.
Speaker 5 (45:31):
The second time out. He was very professional at Kinlan
and actually sat behind the pace made him really to
get the lead, and he idled again. He waited, he
waited for I believe. I want to say it was
a horse named Kurzy. It came alongside of him and
as soon as he got alongside of him, you can
see the left of your brick up like okay, I
(45:52):
got to run now. And he did a few hops
in the skips and he win a won the race
shades of a lot like Zenyatta used to do. You
and I, I think sat and watched the two thousand
and eight San Clemente when she took she was three
behind at the sixteen pole. People heat with Tyler Bays
and Annabus Creation for I can't believe I remember that
(46:15):
with Tyler base and and I don't remember who was
on LEAs Elite. They were in front, they looked like
they were gonna win. And three it's one step, two step, boom,
she puts her head in front. I remember Tyler bez
An out of us Creations dropping and said like, I
can't believe I got beat, But that horse kind of
did that. So now this is the horses in the
second lifetime starting does that, and you're like, okay, the
(46:37):
sun's going on here. This source has got a lot
of mental qualities of the kind of horse that's gonna
outrun handicappers with figures. So it shows up over at
Aqueduct which you mentioned, and trusts the last out of
the gate shows none of its bet. I mean it
was done on purpose. They wanted to sit and see
(46:57):
if they'll finish. Makes this giant move in three steps.
He just nailed the field right on. The fern takes
the lead, opens up, and all of a sudden you
can see Flavian Pratt was on the horse and he's
driving the saying come on, why are you pulling yourself up?
And here comes aviator ge and and again finds enough
(47:19):
to rebreak and get.
Speaker 8 (47:21):
To the wire first.
Speaker 5 (47:22):
So I learned something from watching that without having to
rely on speed figures. I know that horse runs a competition.
Now you wonder why did Flavy and Pratt get off
and go over to John Ancock. Well, it's simple to
look at jan Ancock was extremely impressive and brad Cox
(47:43):
has got probably more to offer than Owen Hardy does
as far as the number horses and number of quality.
No knocking Owen. You know he's got good dolphin, but
he doesn't have the limited unlimited resources that brat Cox says.
I mean right, they're like an assembly an't over there.
So it's one of those situations that that's a no brainer.
(48:04):
And plus maybe flating men not have light that the
horse pulled himself in the stretch and the rems in
and waited on horses. You know, he said, oh, maybe
he's got a common he wanted to wait on horses. No,
he wanted he was waiting. And you know, like I
can live by carriers to through my dogs. I have
two huskies. One of them, Joe is a complete and
(48:25):
total white guy. He'll play games with you because he's
that intelligent. You know that he'll play games. So sometimes
when people say a horse is common because he waits
on horses, that's not true. They're intelligent enough to know
that I'm in a competition and I'm gonna wait for
that horse to get alongside of me and then I'm
gonna beat him. How many of us? How many of
us do that? How many of us we invite the competition? So, man,
(48:51):
I don't like Steve. Steve is incredibly competitive, and I'm
incredibly competitive, and I think you're pretty incredibly competitive. You
you enjoy, you enjoy the ability to compete and give
it somebody a chance to say, oh I can beat you,
looking you in the eye and sometimes like that too.
Speaker 8 (49:15):
Yeah, So Poster worked. You know, I'm right with you.
I saw that in the first two races, and he
went to the dirt took care of that. So he's
answered a lot of questions and these other horses have not.
It's going to be a fun races, really fun race
down there on a good card at Tampa Bay. So
(49:36):
anybody you can tell us about what you saw with
John Hancock. As far as the works since that race,
he said, I think too, the kind of maintenance.
Speaker 5 (49:44):
Works they tried to hide him. It was a work
at Churchield that was really fast and I couldn't find
the horse anywhere. They tried to hide him, which was
interesting because they knew what they had. It's a really
nice horse, he's well bred, got everything going on. But
until they do the two turns. You know, you never know.
(50:04):
I think it's those two. The one problem with John
Hancock with the speed is you got owen Omighty in there,
and I think owen Omity is a kind of horse
that may not be able to go to distance. However,
his speed is very dangerous.
Speaker 8 (50:17):
He's legitimately fast towards Yeah, he's and blunkers are on
and I read he's going to be out there for sure.
Speaker 2 (50:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (50:24):
And now we're going to have to whisper Jason because
we've got something in the eighth race. Nobody's this name.
So the eighth race at Oakland. Are we ready to
whisper that one?
Speaker 8 (50:38):
Yeah, whisper it out.
Speaker 5 (50:39):
Let's do it right, Okay. The eighth race number eight
him h y m N from the run Motet party
and I've got two videos on him back in December
eleventh and December twenty second. You can find them in
the workout report if you pull up the Oaklan sheet
and both were very very could so they like him
(51:03):
in the eighth race, the number eight at oaklonn.
Speaker 8 (51:08):
I'm great in the eighth hot springs him perfectly done, Bruno,
that was that was very good. I like that had
a regular feature, the Whisper Horse.
Speaker 5 (51:21):
Yeah, yeah, you can't tell anybody. Hey, everybody out there
that's listening, don't know anybody.
Speaker 8 (51:27):
Yeah, just play him. Race eight, number eight at Oakland
where they finally got some good weather after a night
and a month down there, and I think it's going
to get cold again, but today is gorgeous. So if
you're interested in playing Oakland, today is a good one
to get out there. Bruno always appreciate it. Whether you're
whispering or trying to be serene, it's all good. So
(51:51):
pushing you the best to like today and tomorrow, and
we will talk to you next Saturday. Kid, Yeah, Bruno
de Julia, it's all there at Racingjason dot COM's got
three or four tracks going COREA, all the workouts, all

Good morning, Jason. How are you, sir?
Speaker 3 (53:44):
I'm doing well.
Speaker 6 (53:46):
We were talking earlier about some of the jockeys and
trainers in southern California. Just I took hold of the
stats because I tried update myself pretty often. And so
as far as the jocks go, you know, Wandered end
as a way out in front, but he's had the
most mounts, so he's got the most wins and the
most earnings. Flying under the radar a little bit. Of course,
(54:06):
Flavian doesn't fly under the radar, but you know, if
you look at the per race earnings and wins, Flavian's
actually doing better. But he's spending a little time back East.
He's got a big client base out there. The one
not to sleep on is Antonio for Zoo. He's only
got ten wins, but he's earned a million bucks. So
guy to keep an eye on, especially in the bigger races.
(54:27):
And as far as the trainers go, of course, bafforts
up way out in front, and Mark Latt's having a
great meat. But watch out for Doug O'Neil. He's got
eleven wins and nine hundred thousand. He's actually earned more
money than Glad, So Doug O'Neil something you want to
watch out for in the big States.
Speaker 8 (54:42):
Yeah, his barn is going well right now. He's kind
of a hot cold barn guy. So when it's going well,
the whole barn seems to run well, and then all
of a sudden it stops and he can't get a winner.
So right now his horses are running, and that's something
to keep an eye on. He did send the one
down to Tampa Bay too, to get away from all
those bafforts, which is kind of what you have to do. Uh,
and he did it. So we'll see what happens with
(55:04):
him down at Tampa Bay. But he's got a bunch
of horses running in there today as well. Well done
for you yesterday, early picked four, early picked five. You
figured they wouldn't pay too much, so he said, bet
them four times and you get both of them. So
that's a nice way to go. And what four or
five winners last Saturday, Potente Copion, Citizen Bowl. They were
(55:26):
all bet pretty hard. But you also have call signed seven.
Never a doubt, right, no, never a doubt. That was
coming out of a grat mitstake. So you know, I
really thought he'd be soide. I didn't think he'd call
back that far early. But well, hey, it doesn't matter,
get the job done, it doesn't matter it's a winner.
(55:46):
But I don't know how many of those the heart
can take, but yeah, that was one. That was one
of them. All right, let's uh, let's get to your place.
You want to start at Gulfstream.
Speaker 6 (55:56):
Sure, yeah, let's let's race eight. We're looking at a
maid and race. It's very competitive, with a lot of chances,
a lot of first time starters, and I think you
know this is a race where, of course the favorites
beat a boy. I wouldn't be giving it out. And
the favorite here is the first timer. Number five Crudo
from the Todd pletcherbarn certainly has some good works here,
(56:17):
nice bullet over at Palm Beach. But the one I
like is the horse has already has some experience, and
that's down near the bottom. Number loven Captain Eddie Captainetti
comes from Mary Lightner Barn. Mary's not having her best meet,
she's only on one win so far, but this is
what she does second time out, first time out. This
one ran fast over the turf course and nearly got there.
(56:40):
The horse that beat Captain Eddie Turbulent Force, came right
back and won the next race and improved the speed
figure by about twenty points, so he was in tough.
I'm surprised Captain Eddie is coming back as at Gelding
so soon. But you know, I guess maybe's a little
uncontrollable on the barn. She gets thirty five percent, wins
second out at eight to one. Really think Captain Eddie's
(57:02):
a value like that last bullet work as well.
Speaker 8 (57:05):
Okay, and again this is race seven. Excuse me. Race
eight at Gulfstream Park should go off a little bit
four one o'clock California time. The eleven Captain Eddie going
turf to dirt, turf to dirt and second time out
and first time guilding a lot of angles here, I
note that the trainer has only one win, but seven
horses have run third and two have run second, so
(57:26):
ten for fifteen in the money. So the horses aren't running,
they just aren't winning yet, and she's overdue. So the
eleven Captain Eddie in race eight in the exotics.
Speaker 6 (57:36):
Yeah, we're gonna wheel the exact of the main bet.
And I like the works on the one right above
number ten x y prime. Let's play a trifecta wheel
as well, ten eleven with ten eleven, with all ten
eleven with all of ten eleven, and let's jump to
San Anita.
Speaker 8 (57:49):
All right, let's do it the great race place. You're
going to go to race ten, correct.
Speaker 6 (57:53):
We are, and I'm going to try to beat the
favorite again here number ten and ready to rumble. Certainly
a deserving favorite. Came on nicely, got second and just
lost by a neck. But there's a horse that I
think actually has more talent that this one beat in
that race, and that one is number one, Talas. And
Tallas is a horse that was having a nice run
(58:15):
back in twenty twenty three and then apparently there's a
serious injury and was never the same, took over a
year off, came back and is kind of rounding back
in the form twenty links back, eleven links back. Last
time around, Tyler Bays took a hold and finished only
four and a quarter lengths out, So really coming back
to form now. Vincent Chemino from He's out here to
(58:36):
ride true quality for Jonathan Thomas takes them ount and
I just think Talas here at fifteen to one, this
could be the day for Talas. He might just be
hitting that form cycle just right.
Speaker 8 (58:47):
Yeah, I think that's well put. He's fifteen to one
on the morning line too, because he just hasn't won
a race in a long long time. But like you said,
you want to get them when they're cycling towards the
good one, especially when they're going to be a price.
And this guy's a nice tur prider team drossy inside
should save ground. So the one talus very interesting play
here in the final race on the card race ten.
There's a super high five carryover in this race. By
(59:09):
the way, what about exacty is.
Speaker 6 (59:11):
We'll play a trifecto. We'll use and ready to rumble
cube its crusader one time mark and we'll throw six
magpies into a third slot on the sabers. So it's
one with six nine ten with all and then one
six nine ten with one six nine ten with one
four six nine ten, throw six magpies in that last one.
Speaker 8 (59:30):
All right, that's it. The candles for hot bite, as
always appreciated, Brad.
Speaker 5 (59:35):
Here.
Speaker 8 (59:35):
We'll talk to everybody next week at eight. Go get
them
