kings here in southern California and around the country.
Speaker 7 (03:40):
And here's your host, Jason Levine.
Speaker 8 (03:42):
Yeah, Yeah, I am Jason Levine. This is Inside Racing.
It's March fifteenth.
Speaker 7 (03:51):
I'm in Florida.
Speaker 8 (03:53):
Who things from sunny Boca Raton, Florida. Pretty weird for
me to have been up for a couple hours before
doing the show. So if I sound a little different,
now you know why I'm awake. Weird. All right, let's
see what have we got. We got a lot, as
always to cover and try to have a little fun
doing it. Let's see where do you start. We've got
(04:16):
some good things to talk about, we have some not
so good things to talk about. Let's start with the
good thing, starting a positive note. It's always good these days.
We need some positivity, all right. Good news we talked
about last week. The older horses, some of whom are
(04:38):
staying in training, are going to give us a fun
year and already are so got to be thankful for that.
We've seen White a Barrio do his thing. We saw
Locked certainly do his thing. The big cap Thorpedo Anna
maybe the best horse in the country. I don't think so,
but she's awfully good. She came back last week. Not
much of a challenge for her, but that's okay. She
(05:00):
kind of dominates her division right now, but she's back.
She looked great. Trainer Kenny McPeek is thrilled. I think
all of racing should be thrilled, and I believe the
next step is the apple blossom for her. That should
be fun. Maybe Bob Baffert will send Cavalieri, who is
now four for four after winning in Santa Anita. That
would be fun, like to see the best challenged. So
(05:23):
great to see Torpedo Anna back in action. And next
week we see cram back in action on the undercard
of the Louisiana Derby down at the Fairgrounds. So the
hits just keep on coming, and we should be pretty
pleased about that. It doesn't happen often, so this year
so far great and that all of them are here
(05:45):
and not over in the Middle East even better wasting
away over there anyway, sticking with the good news, more
good news or potential good news, we'll see the Hall
of Fame ballots her out again. And as you well
know if you listen to the show, it is my
fervent belief that ConA Gold, one of the great sprinters
(06:07):
of all time and certainly in California history, but really
of all time, is on the ballot yet again. He's
come very very close to making it. But there's some
people out there that have their head so far anyway,
they just don't have a clue. They don't understand what
a Hall of Fame horse looks like if they're not
voting for ConA Gold. So I'll get into this more
(06:28):
next week. But they send out the horse's career records
when they send out all the information to the voters,
which is always fun. And if you can look at
his career record and say to yourself, that's not a
Hall of Fame horse, you're a moron, an idiot, and
you should never vote again. And I've said that before
(06:50):
and I'll say it again. You have to be you
just don't understand anything. If you can look at that
horse's career from beginning to end and say to yourself,
not a Hall of Fame career. It's the definition of
a Hall of Fame career. Everything you want in a
Hall of Famer is in that career. So more to
talk about there next week. Also, the Southern California trainers
(07:12):
are all on the ballot, so again we'll talk about
this more next week. But if you had to vote,
I get to vote. But if you had to vote,
Doug O'Neill, John Sheriff's and John Sadler are all on
the ballot, I can vote for all of them or none,
or one or two. So who do you think is
the Hall of Famer? You think all three of them O'Neill,
(07:33):
Sheriffs and Sadler. You think one of them towers over
the other. It's interesting. And they're on the ballot too,
along with Christophe Clemont and Graham Motion. All five of
them have horses running today. Fun thing about horse racing
and you can be on the ballot for the Hall
of Fame while active. Not true, and I don't think
any other sport but horse racing is a little different.
(07:56):
So that's happening.
Speaker 7 (07:57):
That's good.
Speaker 8 (07:58):
More good news our man Steve Pollock, who's been on
a heck of a role as you know if you
listen to the show and has made you a bundle
of money. If you've listened the past month and bet
his picks, you're cruising. Well, he's cruising right now. He
is at the National Handicapping Championship trying to win the thing,
and after day one, which was yesterday, he's in fifteenth place,
(08:20):
which out of six hundred some people is pretty good,
so good start for Steve. He's got his head down,
he's focused and continuing to do his thing, so that's
where his focus is, as it should be. He certainly
got a pick for you and he's coming on in
a few minutes to talk about it. But just well
done by him and love to see him in the
(08:42):
mix after day one. That's great. A lot of people
are basically out of it after day one and he
is not, so that's some very good news as well,
so very happy about that. For today's racing, some good news.
There's a pick six carryover at saying I need a
forty something thousand dollars, so that a little bit of
a bonus. A reminder that there is special Monday racing
(09:04):
this week, Saint Patrick's Day. It is free admission and
free parking at Santa Anita.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
WI.
Speaker 8 (09:11):
Should be a beautiful day out there, so that's happening.
He featured today at Santa Anita the Santa Anna for
older phillies and Mary's going a mile and a quarter
on the turf. The favorite is the eight, Katherine, Marissa,
and I will mention the late great Alan Benowitz, who
did about eighteen years on the show with me, who
(09:34):
always did not like it when you drew outside in
a three turn race. And this is a three turn race,
so I'd never really thought about that till Alan brought
it up seventeen years ago, but I think about it
now every time it happens. And the favorite here did
draw the far outside the eight in a three turn race.
So there's that. Katherine and Marissa, she looks best. Missus
(09:58):
Astor has a shot, has a shot. So that's the feature.
That's Race eight today at San Anita, out of town Golfstream, Oaklawn, Aqueduct,
all running some dirt steaks, sprinters at Aqueduct and Oakland
a turf sprint at golf Stream. If they had a
better card, I would have gone to gold Stream today,
(10:20):
but they didn't, so I'm not Aqueduct has the Jimmy Winkfield,
famous African American jockey. They've already kind of diminished that race.
The way things are going now, they'll probably get rid
of it in a year or two. At Oakland they
have the Whitmore. He was a great sprinter. It's a
very good race, six pur long sprint there on the dirt.
(10:40):
Of course, what else, all right, So that's what's happening
on the track. That was the good not so good.
If you watched the Tampa Bay Derby last week, and
we'll talk about this a little bit more with Bruno
and Steve and Jay if they want to weigh in,
you saw Owen Almighty win the race as predicted by Bruno,
(11:01):
very nicely done by him from the rail, with good
tactical speed. But if you were watching closely, what you
also saw was Jose Ortiz riding the number five blocking
for his brother, and put it mildly, he did not
do what was best for his own horse. He did
(11:23):
what was best for his brother's horse, and kept his
brother's main competition, Patch Adams, on the far far far
outside as long as he could going into that first
turn and around the first turn, essentially blocking for his brother.
This is not the first time they were teas brothers
(11:43):
have done this. It's probably the ninetieth time. You should
know that there's a rule in New York that a
married couple can't ride in the same race because they
fear that they might have some shenanigans going on. There
is a married couple right now, and they don't let
them ride in the same race. The Ortez brothers they
(12:04):
certainly let ride in the same race. And they've pulled
this crap over and over and over again, and they
don't care. This was the big race of the day
in the country and they did it, and they don't
care because nobody ever does anything to them. And it's
just makes the sport look like a little league sport,
which it is because they don't do anything about it.
It's blatant. What I don't understand is the owner of
(12:27):
Jose Ortiz's horse, why wouldn't he, you know, just scream
and yell about it, make us stink, never ride the
guy again, because he clearly stiffed your horse the block
for his brother. So I don't know, it's up to
the owner sometimes to step up. I don't understand that.
But anyway, that happened, So that's not so good. His
empathetic is what it is. And if I was the
(12:49):
owner of Patch Adams, I'd have some words for Jose
RTIs for sure, more than one word anyway. So there's
that on the jockey front. Fank to Tory, who has
kept his career going. Now we may know why he
declared for bankruptcy last week. Over in the UK, he's
(13:09):
having some tremendous tax trouble. They tried to keep it quiet,
they did until last week, and then it came out.
So I don't know how that's going to play out
for Frankie, but that could explain him struggling this year,
because he has struggled, but he's obviously had a lot
of mind than just racing. So always really sad to
hear that a guy who's made an awful lot of
(13:31):
money in his career he blamed it on some new
advisors from six or seven years ago that told him,
use this tax structure, let's do this. He did it,
and now he's in trouble. So whether or not it
was their fault, his fault, however you break that down,
that's unfortunate news to hear from Frankie to Torri, so
(13:52):
know that that's happening. The big race today at a
town good not so good. It's the Virginia Derby. For
some reason, they decide to have like a three or
four day meet at Colonial Downs and they run a
half a million dollar race on the Derby trail. Okay,
I don't get it, but it's not very good race.
So that's why it's in a not so good category.
(14:14):
Bob Baffort having all the horses, as we mentioned on
the show last week, having triple the amount anybody else has,
has one in here. It's Getaway Car. He is a
three time winner. He just won the Sunland Derby and
he should win this race. So I don't know. It
was it great to win the Sunland Derby and the
Virginia Derby. Sure you make a ton of money winning both.
(14:36):
The winner gets three hundred thousand today. He doesn't have
much to be He's the controlling speed of the race,
the one horse maybe he has to beat. It's right
next to him. That's Rapture, trained by Brad Cox. I
guess the interest here is that Getaway Car is ridden
by Irad Ortiz that guy again. But Jose's not in
the race, and I Rad's rival, Flavian Pradt, is right
(14:59):
next to him on Rapture, and Rapture has some tactical speed,
definitely not as fast as Getaway Car, but we'll see
what happens in this one because they both know what's
going on. So it's really a Rad and Pratt going
at it. Six number seven in the Virginia Derby. There's
not much else in this race that I can see
(15:20):
that is a threat to get Away Car. Maybe Rapture
is John Hancock scratched. He'll go next week. He's a
very talented, interesting horse. So that's race nine at Colonial.
It's a fun card there. They also have a race
for the Phillies the Virginia Oaks right before that. That
is a very good race, unlike the Virginia Derby, so
we'll see. So there was that, So if you're interested
(15:43):
in playing that card, you know it's hard to play tracks.
You don't know. I never played Colonial, so I always
struggle when I try to jump in once somewhere where
I'm not familiar. That would be the case there and
the Virginia Derby. I don't see any reason to play
that race. So that's how that goes what else we got? Finally,
(16:05):
I guess Mike Ripoli, the self proclaimed commissioner of racing,
just a bozo. He was on the front page of
the New York Times yesterday because he is the big
booster for Saint John's basketball. He went there. He's the
right age. So he saw Chris Mollen and Walter Berry
and Mark Jackson and those great Saint John's teams. He
was a teenager, I was in college. They were awesome,
(16:28):
and he was one of the driving forces and bringing
Rick Patino that name back into college basketball, and then
paying a lot of money for Patino to go steal
players from other schools, which he did and turned them
into a really good team. Here's the thing about Rick Patino.
(16:50):
He's a great basketball coach. He's a dirt bag of
a guy. He'll play every angle, some of them illegal,
and he's been caught more than once and suspended and fined,
and I believe lost the national championship. But in this
day and age, who cares right? This is the age
of hey, cheat all you want. Cheaters win. So there's
(17:14):
Micropoli on the front page and Saint John's folks said
they had some questions. You know he had issues with
Saint John's and they had issues with him for years.
He said some nasty things, because that's how Micropoli rolls,
but they decided, you know what, we'll take the money.
We'll go ahead and take the hit and associate ourselves
with him. In the head of Saint John's, who's a priest,
even said that, yeah, well, you know, so there was
(17:39):
nothing about horse racing and the whole article, which I
thought was interesting since that is his big passion. It's
a big other passion. So you can buy a college
basketball team, and you can buy some expensive horses. He's
got one today running the gull Stream. We'll talk about
that with Bruno.
Speaker 7 (17:53):
A little bit later.
Speaker 8 (17:54):
But hey, there was Micropoli on the front page doing
his thing, using his money to get with you he wants.
And we'll see what happens in Saint John's as they
move through the NCAA tournament with Rick Patino. That name
pops up again. All right, that's it for me. Let's
bring on mister Pollock. He's in Las Vegas. Steve, good morning,
(18:18):
Good morning, oh man. He sounds up and ready to go.
I hope. So.
Speaker 9 (18:22):
I don't know how that came out, Man, I haven't
had much sleep the last few days.
Speaker 8 (18:26):
Hey, no whining. I don't want to hear that.
Speaker 7 (18:29):
That wasn't the whinning.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
I was just fat.
Speaker 8 (18:34):
Hey, this is a good reason not to have sleep.
You're working, I am.
Speaker 9 (18:40):
I definitely am.
Speaker 8 (18:42):
Yep, that's a good thing. So you're looking at more
than one track today. As part of the National Handicapping Championship.
They have a bunch of mandatory races that they pick
for you for people that don't know the format, and
then you have a number of optional races, so you
have what they use to call probably still do a
number of bullets in the gun and you have to
(19:03):
choose when to use them. So that is part of
the strategy of the tournament. Good first day for you,
got your head down, looking to have a good second day,
and advanced the third day. Is that about the story?
Speaker 7 (19:15):
Yeah? I am.
Speaker 9 (19:17):
Let's see. I'm in in fifteenth place after day one.
You know, as always made a couple of mistakes, but
made a couple of really key good selections too. And
the biggest mistake that I made yesterday was missing a race,
But then I actually got to play another race that
(19:37):
I wouldn't have played and that horse actually won and
I only ended up with a few less points than
what I would have had. So pretty good day overall,
you know, And again the scores aren't super high today.
There's a lot more picks that you have they give you.
They don't give you the same number of picks, which
is pretty unusual for a tournament. Usually have the same
number of picks on a Friday as you do on
(19:59):
a Saturday, but with the better cards, okay, with a
better card on Saturday. Instead of six mandatory races, they
have eight mandatory races today and instead of what was it,
six and ten, you're going to get eight and twelve.
So you get twenty picks today. Oh wow, twenty pics today.
(20:20):
So there's a lot of you know, a little more
on the line today, and obviously a little bit better
quality racing and the quality racing all over. Sant Anita.
A little bit of a question.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
You know.
Speaker 9 (20:30):
The weather came in and obviously we were off the turf.
I think we're going to be back on the turf.
Speaker 7 (20:35):
I tried to.
Speaker 9 (20:35):
Stay away from the grass races because I wasn't one
hundred percent sure. I'm pretty sure we're going to be
on it, but I'm not sure where we're going to be,
whether it's going to be good, and you know, you
just might want to take a race or two and
just to see how that's going. Because I'm a little scattered, Jason.
You know, I always encourage people, Hey, I love the card.
Today I'm a little scattered. I would you know, if
(20:58):
you want to play with what with our stuff? They
go with Bruno, go with Jay because I'm just so
scattered being here. I'm really concentrating on all these races
all over. I'm going to give you my best bet
at Santa Needa today, But you know, I mean, look,
we're all here to we are. This is a business,
but I also want people to be able to do well.
And today's a day where my focus isn't one hundred
(21:19):
percent on where it's going to be ninety nine percent
of the time. So that's why I recommend that. But
that being said, you know, Santa's Card's got a lot
of questions about it today because a lot of these
horses are very lightly raced, and a lot of questions
on the surface on both the all third and turf.
Speaker 8 (21:39):
Yeah, now that's just how it goes. Sometimes you just
have to play with what you're handed. It is a
ten race card and starts at one o'clock ends at
about five forty. That's the end, right. It used to
be Golden Gate was the end of the tournament, but
now it's got to be Santa Nita, right, or be
the last couple of races we'll be out there.
Speaker 9 (21:56):
Well, they're running Turfway and Jason, and Turfway has been
a black for me. I've been really following it, and
you know, sometimes work pays off, because I've really been
working hard on Turfway and I actually made three selections
there yesterday and one ran second and the horse was
clearly best, had a very bad start at the race,
was very lucky to get up for second late, but
I think he would have won the race, and my
(22:17):
other two selections did win. So I really had a
great day at Turfway yesterday.
Speaker 8 (22:21):
And new nickname the King of turf Way.
Speaker 7 (22:27):
Well, I mean it.
Speaker 9 (22:28):
You know, look, sometimes the work pays off. But that
was that was good yesterday that that happened. And you know,
I mean I'm going to be playing a lot of
sant Anita today, but a lot of it is going
to be making adjustments to making sure how that track
is and they do not have a mandatory race there today.
All the races of Santa Nita are just optional plays
for players.
Speaker 7 (22:47):
Wow.
Speaker 9 (22:47):
That's yeah, they just just because of the way the
weather was. But yeah, that is very unusual. We did
have a race yesterday. They picked a race that was
actually taking off the turf and you know, really became
a pretty negative race. It went from a nine or
ten horse field to a six horse field, and you know,
I think that they were a little bit worried about
(23:08):
that happening on any of the glass races today, and
so they so staying away from Santa Anita, which you know,
there's a lot of players here. A lot of the
players are from all over the country here, so they're
going to play everywhere, and with sant Anita being a
little bit questionable with all the bad whether we had
this week, they're just going to be optionals for everybody. Yeah.
Speaker 8 (23:28):
I should mention that we've talked about this on the
show over the years, but if there's one area of
racing that has grown and gotten better its tournament play
in the last twenty some years, starting with the NHC.
Speaker 7 (23:44):
I was there when they birthed it.
Speaker 8 (23:45):
I knew most of the guys that were involved in
birthing it. Some of them are still involved, some of
them have moved on. Tournament play has really become a
boon for the horse player. And there is really nothing
else in the game that has grown and been positive
for the horse player. A lot of negatives, but tournament play,
especially because you know you're playing against other guys and
(24:08):
the computers don't hurt you. They hurt everybody, so it's
kind of a level playing.
Speaker 9 (24:14):
That's a very good point. That's a very good point.
And these days, I want to say one thing out.
You know, I probably played in seventy, maybe fifty fifty
to seventy Las Vegas style tournaments, but it's been fifteen
twenty years since I have done so. When my son
was born and when he got to a certain age,
I said, you know, I'm going to play dad. So
I haven't been over a year in a while. I
was at the first one of the I was in
(24:35):
the first NHC and I came down to get my
seat the first day and I didn't reserve my seat
and I ended up in the snack bar.
Speaker 6 (24:42):
I'm thinking that I was.
Speaker 9 (24:44):
In French Fries. I was knowing French Fries all day,
and it was a very very frustrating tournament for me
because I was fairly I was in contention going into
the second day if I had a really good day
and I really liked the horse. I remember the horse's
name was Patriot Games, and I had hit a horse
called Skull and Crossbones at Gulf Stream Park. I kid
(25:07):
you not, and I'm thinking, boy, is that a bad omen.
I hit this twenty some dollar horse to move into
a good spot, and I thought, man, if I can
hit this ninth race at Aqueduct with this horse, I
really like, I'm going to be in great shape. Well,
I don't need to tell you. When they ran the
eighth race at Aqueduct, announced er was calling Patriot Games
in front by ten and this horse paid forty some
(25:29):
odd dollars and I missed it. I was in the
snack bar, didn't see that I had marked the wrong
number race. And the only thing I could tell you
that was good was the rest of the day at
Santa Anita and Golden Gate. I really didn't do as
well as I thought I might, and I don't It
certainly didn't cost me a top five placing, which is
what I thought it cost me when I missed the pick.
But the fact that I was in a smack bar
(25:50):
and we were all crunched in. You should see this thing.
This is a massive The amount of people here and
the quality of the room is just absolutely awesome. And
they're taking care of us first class. It's absolutely first class.
And I'll tell you what, folks, if you're getting a
little bit excited, you should just do yourself a favor.
(26:11):
Put this on your bucket list, get yourself in this tournament.
You will have a blast. Yeah, a tournament a lot
of it's just so much work but fun stuff.
Speaker 8 (26:21):
Yeah, and you meet a lot of other horse players.
Obviously it's the top class group there, and there's six
hundred of them, but not all great people, but a
lot of them aren't. And you got a chance to
bump into a lot of people learn some things. But yes,
it's great that they've learned over the years and that
the horse player is finally getting taken care of, which
is what all horse players ever wanted. Ever. Just give
(26:45):
me something free, give me something good, help me out
a little bit. I'm funding the game. Come on, remember
me so it's happening, and I'm thrilled that you're part
of it and got to experience it that many years
later and see the growth and feel it is awesome.
So all right, let's jump into your play to get
back to work.
Speaker 9 (27:01):
All right, Jason, we're going to go to I've been
talking about these non winner two lifetime cheap races from
Golden Gate that they're running down here in southern California.
I've got a horse that just lays over on the
numbers that I look at if he can fire fresh,
and it's in the seventh race. It's the eleven horse.
Laura's kiddo, big, big sheet advantage. Looks like they cut
(27:25):
this horse back and they put this horse on the dirt,
and that's really been the key. I really like the
two Emerald races. The last race was in the slop.
The number came up a little bit worse than the
other two. The other two races were really visibly very good,
and I really feel like from the outside post, this
guy will be in the clear. There are a lot
of very very slow horses in here. Again, a big
(27:47):
sheet edge. I'm going to take nine to two on
this one. I'm going to play two simple exact of
boxes there with a layoff horse number one, Roy Hobbs,
who obviously isn't what we thought he was going to
be early in his career. Thought this horse was going
to be a pretty nice horse, but can certainly be
competitive in this race. And the eight horse Hermolinous Fantasy,
who could be the speed at the speed, I'm going
(28:08):
to play the eleven to win. I'll play one in
eight and two exact of boxes. It's the eleven. Laura's
Kiddo in race seven out of sant Anina today.
Speaker 8 (28:17):
Yeah, I'm winners of two five thousand claimers running at
San Anita. We are in a new world on Saturday,
honestly Saturday. Yeah, in the middle of the cars in
the pick six sequence.
Speaker 9 (28:29):
Yeah, but this is where we're at, Jason. So if
we don't, if we don't like these races, you know,
I mean, this is what we're getting about half you know,
maybe not half the card, but certainly thirty three percent.
And that's where we're at. And just wanted to go
over one of them. And these races have been won
a lot of the times by ten eleven, twelve dollars horses,
(28:49):
but a lot of the times by less than that,
and yeah, I just feel like this is one of
those solid horses, so we're going to play it accordingly.
Speaker 8 (28:56):
Yeah, this is a horse and making career start number seventeen,
the eleven Laura's kiddo. I'm not at all familiar with
the trainer, Dan Markle, but he has run two horses
in sant Anita, one one and the other ran second.
So Dan's on fire. And it's the eleven Laura's kiddo
with the one and eight, and we're talking about race
(29:17):
seven on a ten race card. So this kicks off
to pick four at Santa Anita where they do have
Monday racing. But Steve, get back to doing what you're doing.
We're all proud of you, we're all rooting for you,
and just keep your head down, focus and get after it.
Speaker 9 (29:36):
All right, everybody, have a great day out there, and
can't wait to tell everybody about everything next week.
Speaker 8 (29:42):
All right, very good Steve Pollock doing his thing in Vegas,
and we're all supporting him, rooting for him and hoping
for the best day. Down to the top ten percent
after today, that's how it works, So they'll be down
to about six seventy player or something like that. After today,
(30:03):
everybody else is done, and that's obviously what Steve is
trying to do is advance to tomorrow and then try
to get into top ten. You get paid really well,
and obviously if you win the whole thing, guess what,
it's eight hundred thousand dollars to the winner. Eight hundred thousand.
Things have changed in horse horse tournaments. All right, we're
(30:24):
going to take a break. We're going to come back
with Bruno de Giulio. If you're listening to Inside Racing,
this is AM eleven.

Speaker 7 (32:53):
See steve went would.
Speaker 8 (32:55):
Bringing us back listening to A little Steve win wood
unders fan traffic and way. Way BACK and i was
lucky enough To See steve winwood a, few times three
or four times and including about five years ago At The.
Hollywood bowl he. Was unbelievable this is one of the
all time great musical talents all time and a far
(33:17):
better guitar player than most. People think, He's amazing it's amazing.
In everything, phenomenal singer, great writer unbelievable, piano player phenomenal,
guitar player. Great. Entertainer man maybe it's because we had really,
good Seats but steve winn he was. Insanely good so
still out there performing not too. Much ANYMORE but I
(33:39):
know i say this about a lot, of people but
if you get a chance to, see him you're not
going to get too many more go because his catalog.
Is insane every song, is great and he. Brings it
man very super impressive to see the energy and everything
that he brought to. The TABLE so i hope to
be doing that at. His, age anyway let's see what do. We,
(34:02):
got well let's get right to, Our, man bruno and
we have a few things to. Talk About, so bruno.
Speaker 7 (34:08):
Good morning, Hold, On jason I'm taking jewish. Notes Here
raising jason says, handicapping note stay out. Of, snackbar okay,
got it. GO ahead i didn't.
Speaker 8 (34:24):
Say that steve.
Speaker 7 (34:25):
Said that, oh okay, All right well let me. Scratch,
that okay.
Speaker 8 (34:29):
He didn't he didn't say stay out. Of it he got.
Put there it wasn't. His choice don't handicap in THE
snack i mean you. Can handy i've handicapped in a,
snack bar but not with a lot on. THE line
i remember THAT. First nhc and. They didn't they really
did not know what they were doing. At all AND
if i, Remember correctly i'm PRETTY sure. I do there's
(34:50):
a charity portion of it that. They have, you know
celebrities play in the charity portion and they can. PROMOTE
that i was part of that for a couple. Of
them and the first year they had a Group From
penthouse magazine playing in the charity section of, the tournament
And The penthouse pets. Were there i'm not going to
say they did a lot of, the handicapping but they
(35:10):
certainly took a lot of people's eye off, the Ball
uh and that was so that they've come a long way.
Since then they don't do that anymore because they don't
have to because the horse players are flock to, these
tournaments so they don't need to do that kind. Of
stuff but it was pretty funny to be in that room.
Speaker 7 (35:27):
With that.
Speaker 8 (35:27):
Going on not handicapping, related necessarily but they're trying to
promote and get people's eyeballs on the tournament and that
worked pretty well for. Some people so we've come a
long way From The penthouse pets and the.
Speaker 7 (35:40):
Snack bar we say that the first THE, first nhc
they drew, the rail so they didn't. Do well, but so,
you know you brought up some. Interesting points you brought
up About The Tampa, bay derby and YOU and i
kind of discussed. It briefly, you know sometimes we get
(36:03):
to This and i'm guilty as. Everybody else we want
to go ahead and judge the situation and judge the.
PLAYERS involved i really really like to have changed my.
Entire views first, of all if you try to talk
to a jockey or try to get anything out, of
jockey it's Like a. Rubius, Cube okay you'll never get
(36:26):
anything out. Of them they are very, close knit. Close
society they don't like telling anybody anything about what's, going
On and i've had my experiences. With that But what i'll,
say is if you Watch The Tampa, Bay derby i'm
going to use that Information that i'm seeing for the
future because there's going to be a. NEXT time I
(36:48):
did o and olmighty win when you're looking at its,
past performance, says oh he's. The speed well how did?
Speaker 10 (36:53):
He?
Speaker 7 (36:53):
Win well he WON because i read put him on.
The lead jose got alongside, of him has. His wingman,
you know if you want to talk about, air force you,
know pilots he is. His wingman and when they turned to.
The backside first, Of all jose put himself in a
Position And patch adams forced to. Go White Now patch
(37:15):
adams and is a completely other issue that he may
not be as good or he's definitely is not anywhere near.
As good when he gets the front, end two as
they turned into, the backside they slammed on.
Speaker 6 (37:32):
The.
Speaker 7 (37:32):
Brakes yep if you remember The Old martine Pedroza, in
california remember when he used to get out of the
gate of the two. Term race he's bowled out. Of
there he'd open up three lanes and then all of
a sudden he just banked over on that horse and
hammer lost him down and everybody ran up into. His
heels that happens a lot On The. East coast the
(37:53):
guys open up and then slam on. The brakes and
now what that does is everybody is jammed up on.
Their heels now you've got a. False face so that
was one of the key things that happened in that
is that they both simultaneously slammed on the brakes and
caught everybody to kind of jam up. Behind, Him Now
(38:14):
pat adam was lost for, five wives, you know throw.
Him Out naughty rascal tried to come up between Them
and jose shut the door. On him, he did, you know,
you know and and that was pretty. Much it and
then all on a mighty got. The Walk now i'm
not going to say In bad mouth there are. These
brothers i'm not going to, do that but i will
Say that i'm going to use that in my handicapping
(38:36):
next time they come to that horse and those horses
come out and and and, For example owen almighty kind.
Of lynch after, THE race i already started saying he
was thinking about The pad day mile because in the
back of his mind he doesn't think that horse wants
to go at, nine. Furlongs, right so but now they're getting,
You know. Derby fever give me, a doctor, you KNOW
(38:58):
if i, you know give me something a shot to fix,
the remedy Like bon jovi says in. Bad Medicine but
i'm going to handicap that because, you know, darn well
he's not going to have a wingman In. The derby.
Speaker 8 (39:12):
Quite. The opposite now they if they go in, that
direction he's to me cheap speed that will be done
at the top of.
Speaker 7 (39:19):
The, lane so, you know racing has got a really
interesting way the way they. Do things everything sometimes is like.
An illusion It's Like. David copperfield did you Ever See
david Copperfield? In vegas?
Speaker 8 (39:33):
Not. ONCE nope I wish, i DID but i.
Speaker 10 (39:36):
Never.
Speaker 7 (39:36):
Did, no yeah but everything was. An illusion it wasn't
a real. Magic TRICK and i think sometimes in racings
we do have illusions and the illusion of a monster
horse like Oh and almighty going on the lead and, you're,
thinking oh you can go them all on an eighth
if he gets an easy lead in the derby and
you're looking at the person, going okay, you know you
(39:59):
keep thinking in that way and and and you're you're
really gonna never going to catch your ticket. Ever again
but little things, like that and, for example. AUCTION prices
i want to bring your attention to the race Eight At,
gulf stream and you've got a horse on the Outside
named vibe yep For and anthony.
Speaker 8 (40:25):
Who and he probably.
Speaker 7 (40:28):
Who's that well that's talked like his assistant who's getting
the chance to have his name. In Lights when todd's
being serving.
Speaker 8 (40:36):
A suspension, oh yeah let's mention that he is suspended
again for something that he did not challenge. This time
he just took the, short, suspension uh and allowed his
assistant to go ahead and run the BARN for i
think ten days something. Like that but this is another
Suspension For. Todd pletcher many of them and uh His,
(40:59):
owner mike who is breeder of, this horse which is
going to lead to, this discussion doesn't seem to care
because they went a bunch. Of racists so if they're
skirting the edge or cheating or you whatever you want to,
call it they get caught once in. A, while hey
that's part of, the, Game right i'm here to tell you.
It's not and, screw, you uh And screw micropoli And Screw. Todd,
(41:23):
pletcher uh. It's not and if you have to play it, That,
way uh that's. That's sad but that's the age we.
Speaker 6 (41:31):
Live in so.
Speaker 8 (41:33):
That's why we see a Name Like anthony chemeta.
Speaker 7 (41:38):
Straight Out Of good fellas To the Italian here, skimmet,
okay oh and It's it's Anthony skim At.
Speaker 8 (41:48):
The junior so, It's You. Anthony jr It's. LITTLE anthony i.
Don't know i'm just Having.
Speaker 7 (41:53):
A tony, you know we're talking About, little tony, you
know little To. Little, tony yeah we don't know, the.
Speaker 8 (42:00):
Man so we're having a little fun, with him, but
anyway He Is todd. PLEASERS assistant i hope he.
Speaker 7 (42:05):
Does well it's a great opportunity to see his name,
and LIGHTS and i hope he. Does well my whole
issue with this is the auction price of three. Million
dollars and.
Speaker 10 (42:16):
This is not even.
Speaker 7 (42:16):
An issue if they're aff, in business they can do
whatever they want they. Want to they, want to they
want to put nine million dollars, and whatever carve. It
up that's. Their BUSINESS but i Don't want i'm not
going to look at it, and, go oh two million.
Dollar horse he's got golden wings and. Golden hooks. You
know i'm not going to. Do that And and i'm
Going and i'm gonna look at it Realistically because i've
(42:39):
been through. THE sales i get what. They're playing so good,
for them Good. FOR westboyd i hope they have. A
runner i hope. They do they, do fantastic but. NOT
today i like the. Number four here It, comes Francis
now Here. Comes francis was is a Victor of Barbosa
trained improbable and before During, in january there was a
(43:03):
horse Named flood Zone that barbosa had.
Speaker 6 (43:08):
That.
Speaker 7 (43:08):
HE won i think it was set it was first
time second, TIME out, i believe and it was it
was second. Time out and he won a very nice
Race At gulf Stream on, january fourth and he won
pretty convincingly That brat coxx bought. Him privately flood zone
went on the wind that got. Them stakes.
Speaker 8 (43:30):
He didn't Our man jay told us he might, do
that and he paid thirty seven dollars in.
Speaker 7 (43:34):
The process and this horse Here comes francis was drilling
flood zone In the barbosa barn, before THAT and i
got a chance to see a video Back from january on,
this horse and he is a very very. Talented animal
(43:55):
so if you play AN, the nhc if you're hanging
out on the snack bar or, doing something remember the
eighth Race Of, Gulf stream you're going to have people flooding.
The zone you SEE what i. Did, there yeah but
they're gonna flood the zone on the three million dollar
horse going three million dollar hoars and and completely forget
(44:21):
that the four horse or not have that information that
the four horses actually pretty. Darn good so a lot of,
the Times again i'm not going to vilify or anything
what they've done with the option Prizes. OR rapoli, i
know people KNOW what i Think. Of, rapoli Okay al
(44:42):
capone comes. To mind but but the whole, thing is,
YOU know i am going to use it for my
handicapping and try and use what other players are guilty
of doing. Every day and that's over emphasizing something that's really.
And Illusion and i'm gonna go with Here, Comes francy Here,
(45:06):
comes francis, You know and And if, I'M right i
should get double digits on.
Speaker 8 (45:11):
That horse, you mean over ten to one or just over.
Speaker 7 (45:14):
Ten dollars as long as he wins and he pays over,
Ten dollars i'm happy as. A clam i didn't make
him a. Whisper horse, you know, you know you, know
why because the whisper horse is going to. Be vible
he costs three, Million dollars like. No crap it's right
there on, the program, you know right there in. The
form so, YOU know i couldn't make them the whisper
(45:35):
horse because everybody's going to look at that three million
dollars and Just go Google and gaga. Over it there
was a good band out in, the eighties Remember Them? Google, Google, Yeah, google, Yah,
anyway yeah There were they had a couple of. Decent
hits but it's just one of those situations when you
look at it and uh and KNOWING what i know
(45:58):
and NOW how i knowing from my boots on, the
ground that is a really talented colt and a. Nice
horse i'm all in on. Airs, rnges okay there, we
go and you know it's A topic i guess for.
Speaker 8 (46:11):
Another time but the three million dollar Price. On vibe
micropoli bred. The horse so if he's still part owner
and With, west point how is It west point didn't
pay him three million dollars for?
Speaker 7 (46:24):
That, horse, no right so we paid a percentage. Of,
that yeah we don't know How much. Ripoli owns but
again that's none of. Our business that's. Their business. You,
know well if you put no, you, KNOW no I just.
Speaker 8 (46:36):
I disagreed if you beat, THEM fellus. I disagree if
you put that number in print like that and say
that that's, the price then you're making a statement that
that was. The PRICE and i don't believe that.
Speaker 7 (46:47):
Medical situation let's do. Anypothetical, situation, SURE okay i am
going to sell you half of. A horse you are
going to sell. That year we have to have to
your clients and just leave it.
Speaker 8 (47:00):
At that, All right, BUT still, i mean when you
put three million dollars down that's the top price of,
the year that draws a lot of attention to. THAT
horse i guess that's part of. The reasoning but it
just it just smells so bad because. It is it's
just it's just, no anyway that's all part of. The
game so what Was?
Speaker 7 (47:21):
The gordon what Was That? Wall street this Will Be?
Wall street what Was? The gordon? Gecko line greed? Is
good there, you go there.
Speaker 8 (47:30):
You go, All right So Race Ada Gulf stream vibe
is the supposedly three million dollar vers in the Outside
talented you liked a couple of. His works we. Noted
that but Here comes francis From The victor. Barboza barn like,
you said outworked a horse that has already won a
major steak and is the, derby player and that would Be.
(47:51):
Flood zone Here comes Francis With louis sayez Aboard At Gulf.
Stream park, All, RIGHT bruno i appreciate it a lot
going on today all over. The country we Got The
louisiana derby next Week With, john hancock who scratched out
Today Because brad cox has another runner. In there so
(48:11):
we continue Down the derby trail checking out the. Young,
horses wait you have, a minute you have an extra?
Speaker 7 (48:17):
Thirty seconds? Thirty seconds did you look at did you
look At The? Reginia derby why did you notice about?
Getaway car.
Speaker 8 (48:28):
You, TELL me i. DON'T know i can't play, that.
Speaker 7 (48:29):
Game right he doesn't Have that. BACKFORD training i mean
he has a. Three eighths when do you Ever see
baffer come in raised with a? Three eighths?
Speaker 8 (48:41):
Not, often yeah and a four for fifty. AND one
i Don't think i've ever.
Speaker 7 (48:46):
Seen that, so no and my whole mentality goes to
he must be he must have felt that he came
out of a really hard Race In sunland derby and
he knew he didn't have to do a whole lot.
With him, He's fit but That's. That bafford that's Not a.
Bafford cattery it's not to, say.
Speaker 8 (49:05):
Yeah, okay no that's a. Good point. That's true he's
had two works Since The sunland, derby race which was a.
Tough race he battled all the way down the entire
Stretch with Caldera De wayne lucas horse and nosed him
out at the wire and he's had those Two non
baffert type works since and now he Heads, To Colonial
so sun One. To, Colonial, anyway bruno appreciate it. As
(49:27):
always we will talk to you, next week, All right Bruno.

Speaker 7 (50:53):
Good morning joh there. He is how, are?
Speaker 8 (50:56):
You sir i'm.
Speaker 10 (50:58):
Doing WELL so i just wanted to touch real briefly
before we get to the picks on just a couple
of international racing notes because it's one of THE things i.
Focus on and The First long jean's monthly rankings came
out and basically they rank only horses that have already run,
This Year So, sierra leoni, for instance is not going
(51:19):
to be there But forever Young And. Romantic warrior the
two first two finishers in that thrilling stretch run In
The saudi cup were number one. And two, No surprise
White a barrio fourth locked was fifth off their, big
Efforts and White a barrio beat locked In the pegasus
so certainly ranked a little. Bit higher the third one's kind.
(51:39):
Of interesting It's A hong. Kong sprinter it seems to
Be The hong kong Year Because romantic warrior Hails From.
Hong kong but there's a Sprinter Called Kai yin rising
one to keep an, eye on has already Won three
group ones in, a row Won The Queen Silver jubilee,
cup recently and then also before That The Centenary sprint
cup And The Hong. Kong sprint this one got a,
late start started.
Speaker 7 (51:59):
At four now.
Speaker 10 (52:00):
He's five so this horse is really one to look
at for Perhaps The Breeders Cup turf sprint.
Speaker 8 (52:05):
This, Year, aha okay it's a long way down, the line,
but yeah if they rank him, that highly he's obviously
a big deal, over there and so that's good for
us to know as we haven't really seen anybody from
That From hong kong, come over but the, Turf, Sprinters
hey i'm sure he. Can compete get the. Right trip you're,
right there so that'll be FUN and i hope he does,
(52:26):
come over SO.
Speaker 10 (52:28):
Do I also i wanted to mention the HORSE that
i pointed out on a Previous prow titanium Member The
new futures book came out because he was just in
one group. Unranked race he did not Make The Breeders'
Cup future book draw for. Book, five however he is
pointing TOWARD The, uae derby so if he gets in
(52:50):
that and, runs well you might have an opportunity to
bet him separately in, book six which will be In, ned.
Speaker 8 (52:55):
April right so now he'd be part of the field,
Right correct.
Speaker 10 (53:00):
And the field is twelve to one, right now which
is not that big. A deal i will now take
the field of twelve to one.
Speaker 8 (53:06):
When you're getting. Him.
Speaker 7 (53:07):
Though, Yeah TRUE but i think.
Speaker 10 (53:10):
Next month if he does want new a w will
do better than twelve.
Speaker 7 (53:12):
TO one i think we're going to at.
Speaker 8 (53:13):
Least, twenty okay, all right, titany member we'll see there's
a horse here going over FOR The. UA debrie i
forget who. It is who are they just sending? Over
there well we'll. Find out it. Doesn't matter we'll know
in a week. Or two nobody's come out of. The, uage,
well yes they have. Forever young.
Speaker 10 (53:33):
Easy to forget, that, one huh not.
Speaker 7 (53:35):
At, all no he.
Speaker 8 (53:37):
Has in the argument for the best horse in, the
world no question. About it and if all, goes well
we will see him again this fall winter down At,
del mar and.
Speaker 7 (53:48):
That will be.
Speaker 8 (53:48):
Absolutely awesome if even half of the healthy older horses
are still running at, that time we're going to have
An Awesome Breeder's, cup classic which is what we. All
want even if they do put it in the middle. The, card.
Speaker 10 (54:02):
Yeah and it would really make a lot of sense
to get a feel for that track if they sent
him In The, pacific classic and the Same For torpedo,
ata agreed and.
Speaker 8 (54:12):
We'll, see yeah who knows what they're going to do.
Over THERE and i don't think there's much for him
around that time, Of year so maybe they will send
him over and run him In The pacific classing and
just keep. HIM there i. DOUBT it i think they
want to control him and have him in his. Own
surroundings but it's a, definite possibility so we can certainly hope.
For that that would be great, for everybody well every.
(54:34):
Fan certainly, all right let's get to a couple of
races and you focused today As Always santa Anita And.
Gulf stream full card available, for both best Bets For
santa anita. As well so where do you want. To
start let's Go To.
Speaker 10 (54:48):
Golf stream we're going to look at the, race Seven
The Teptiva island stakes on the turf and the big
favorite here just, a care just, a care and very well,
last time but ben out by, opponent's hope who's also.
In here those two figured hit most. Of betting THE
one i liked is down at the bottom best value
on this card in, My opinion Number Seven. Tiger Bell
(55:10):
tiger bell was a group Winner, in france and oddly
Enough most europeans get off a little bit more slowly
here than they do Over in europe where the pace isn't.
As Big tiger bell has been showing speed. AND fading
i think this group might be a little easier than
what she's been facing In. The northeast and the notable
thing to Me Is, luis sais who's the regular writer
(55:31):
on the favorite just a care gets off To Ride.
Tiger bell So Liking tiger bell at a generous twelve to.
Speaker 8 (55:36):
One, price okay and again this is. RaSE Seven At,
gullstream park the feature five fur long turf sprint short
run to the. First Turn tiger bell is on the
outside but like, you said has really good, tactical speed
has been off for, six months looked like she needed,
the break and she's a first time four, year old
which is also going to. Be fine and we know
(55:58):
we're going to see her owner And ONLY michael I
have aron dressed in whatever he's dressed in at a cul,
Stream today, so yeah that is, a bonus, All right
so win Bet On. Tiger bell what about.
Speaker 10 (56:10):
Exotics trifecto we're going to play THE three i mentioned
along with Just a karen opponent's hope, on top, five,
six seven and then we'll throw weekend rags in in the.
Second slot so five six seven with three, five six seven,
with all and then a couple of bonus Tickets With
tiger bell. On top THAT'S what. I like seven, with
three five six, with all seven with all with three.
FIVE six.
Speaker 8 (56:33):
I Think tiger bell may, be Outs Like tiger bell
might have, Just scratched so, ALL right i.
Speaker 10 (56:40):
WOULD yeah i would just play the trifecta THE way i.
Gave it just leave the, seven out so it'd be
six to seven With three, i'm sorry five six with
all and leave it.
Speaker 8 (56:50):
That, way yep five six, with three five six. With,
all okay let's Jump To Santa anita. Race, four okay
we're going to look at.
Speaker 10 (57:00):
Race four the, Favorite Here ultimate high nine to five
and ran very well. Last time but you'll notice right
Behind Her quantum energy coming up and really making a
nice light on falling a. Length short this one's Actually
Beaten ultimate high on, the dirt AND so i think
it's the. Same class and she gets the, right trip
and if somebody takes a little more starch Out Of ultimate,
(57:22):
high early this one can be there late and the
price differential is too hard. To ignore nine to five
versus eight. To one liking Number Six quantum energy in.
Speaker 7 (57:30):
Race, four yeah looking.
Speaker 8 (57:32):
To turn the, tables here and that was a pretty
strong finish. Last time like, you said just need a
little bit, more pace take the energy Out Of, ultimate
high So That armando iuso and, quantum energy and that's
energy with, an eye by, THE way i guess they
had to. Do that can come running for A Trainer,
antonio garcia who could really use. A winner and we're
(57:55):
talking about. Race Four santa anita should go off right around.
Two five it's a mile on. The grass The Six
quantum energy going to be the. Wind bet and we got.
Speaker 7 (58:07):
Some, exotics, yeah yeah we'll use three.
Speaker 10 (58:10):
Horses underneath We'll use Princessa, del TAIGRI how i really,
don't LIKE but i can't throw out a two to.
One horse we're going to try to, beat HER and
i think. She's beatable we're going to use two big
prices in here, in ADDITIONALLY and i think one of
them has a. Decent shot of coming in she's Misbehaving
And sassy prance a lot both of that good results
over this, course BEFORE and i think they're well capable
(58:31):
of hitting the. Board today so we'll use the two favorites, on,
top well not the, two favorites but the favorite and
the and my favorite. We'll use We'll Use ultimate High
And quantum energy on top at all. Five underneath so
it's at two six with one two three six seven.
Speaker 1 (58:47):
With all.
Speaker 8 (58:50):
Well, losing okay and one two three six.
Speaker 7 (58:57):
Seven with all.
Speaker 8 (58:58):
