Here, John Henry takes la John Henry and now it's
time for Inside Racing, a full hour of coverage on
everything going on in the sport of kings here in
southern California and around the country. And here's your host,
Jason Levine.

Speaker 8 (03:42):
Yeah, uh yeah, I am Jason Levine.

Speaker 9 (03:48):
This is Inside Racing, my next to last show, and uh,
I don't know how many more.

Speaker 8 (03:57):
After that, four nineteen three, So we've got four more
after this, going through the Kentucky Derby and Steve and
Jay will take you through the last three shows as
I'm off.

Speaker 9 (04:10):
Down under looking forward to that.

Speaker 8 (04:15):
Meet the new grandson. Always fun, ah boy. So what
do we do here? We got a lot to talk about.
It's a big day, my last big day of racing,
twenty two years of big days. The shift to big
days came what fifteen years ago something like that, and
just gotten stronger and stronger, so they load up on

(04:35):
the big Saturdays.

Speaker 9 (04:37):
Didn't used to be that way, but.

Speaker 8 (04:39):
It has been for a long time. And we have
a big one today, so plenty to talk about. I
will note that Bruno is no longer with us, he's
back in Kentucky time frame issues, so it'll just be
Steve and then Jay and if we have some time
towards the end of the show final ten minutes or

(04:59):
so twelve minutes, if you want to call in and
say hello.

Speaker 9 (05:06):
Talk about the show.

Speaker 8 (05:07):
Or whatever you want to talk about, let me give
you the number.

Speaker 7 (05:11):
Now.

Speaker 8 (05:11):
We're going to try to do that a little bit
at the end of the show today. It should be
fun eight seven seven five two zero one.

Speaker 9 (05:19):
One five zero eight seven seven.

Speaker 8 (05:23):
Five to two oh eleven fifty as it should be
eleven fifty, all right, let's see.

Speaker 9 (05:32):
So yeah, eight seven seven, five to eleven fifty is
the number to call in.

Speaker 8 (05:35):
We'll do that again the final segment about eight forty
five or so, which will be right after they run
the big sprint race in Dubai, because that's happening today,
so let's start there.

Speaker 9 (05:50):
We've got a huge day.

Speaker 8 (05:51):
At Santa Anita Santa Anita Derby Day with three other
four other stakes races, two for Cowbreads and the sant
Anita oh Ok for the Phillies and then the Monrovia
coming down the hills.

Speaker 9 (06:02):
A huge day at sant Anita, equally huge day at Aqueduct.

Speaker 8 (06:07):
It is Wood Memorial Day there the Wood goes as
Race twelve. They also have the Carter, the Gazelle, and
the Distaff, all of which are pretty strong races, so
really nice card.

Speaker 9 (06:18):
Back at Aqueduct, Jay's got a.

Speaker 8 (06:19):
Little bonus from there. Steve has a little bonus from there.
Jay and I will talk about the Wood Memorial when
he comes on. I may talk about a little now.
But first over in Dubai, they just ran the UAE
Derby flood Zone who Jay gave out at a big
price winning back East went over there and flopped. Today

(06:42):
they just ran the race, was photo finished, couldn't tell
who won. In about forty minutes they're going to run
the Golden Shaheen Sprint straight no Chaser. Southern California horse
who won the Breeders' Cup is the heavy favorite in
that race again. That's in about forty minutes. They run
the Big Turfrace with Romantic Warrior, best turf horse in

(07:05):
the world, followed by another big Turfrase with Rebels Romance
Breeders' Cup Turf winner twice against a really nice European
named Kland again and a couple of very strong Japanese horses,
and then finally at ten thirty the Dubai World Cup,
Forever Young, arguably the best horse in the world. We'll

(07:27):
face off against the group. He should beat Katona and
Mixto and Rattle and Roll come from the US. Not
the strongest contingent at all, the Japanese contingent, not the
other Japanese contingent, not super strong. So interesting to see
Forever Young once again. He's been on a roll and
we will get to see him in about two and

(07:48):
a half hours over in Dubai. Kind of fitting that
my next to last show would involve Dubai because that's
what got me on the radio in the first place.
You all of you know that. But I wrote a
book about Sheik Muhammad and the Godolphin operation trying to
win the Kentucky Derby, spending hundreds of millions of dollars

(08:09):
to win the Kentucky Derby saying they would win it
by a certain date. And that book was called From
the Desert to the Derby, came out in two thousand
and two. It was the first book from the DRF
Press once they had kind of restarted things under their
new owner, Stephen Christ, and I thank Stephen for the
opportunity to write that book. It was pretty crazy for

(08:29):
him to green light it. I'd gotten to know him,
done a couple articles on him, and.

Speaker 9 (08:37):
When I got let go from.

Speaker 8 (08:38):
Foxsports dot com, where I was the national racing and
boxing writer, I had idea for a big article, and
then I thought maybe a book would be this pursuit
of the Derby with Godolphin hiring Owen Hardy away from
Bob Baffort and giving him all these expensive horses to

(08:58):
try to do it the way Baffort did it and
win Sheik Muhammad a Derby, and to follow that quest
and talk about Godolphin and all that and anyway, I
pitched it to Steve Christ and he said yes. I
remember walking out of his office stunned.

Speaker 9 (09:13):
I didn't know it work that way. You take one shot,
the guy says yes.

Speaker 8 (09:17):
And then you're off and running. And they put me
on a very tight deadline. Found out later they didn't
think I could make the deadline, but I did it,
and a lot of fun.

Speaker 9 (09:27):
Writing that book.

Speaker 8 (09:28):
Anyway, The book did quite well.

Speaker 9 (09:31):
I'm glad to.

Speaker 8 (09:32):
Say, had a great time going around.

Speaker 9 (09:33):
And doing book signings. Fun one out at Santa Nita.

Speaker 8 (09:36):
I still remember that my mom and dad were there
for that. That was cool for them, fun for me.
Fun to see a lot of people come out there
and talk about it. And anyway, as part of that,
did a lot of radio shows and noticed that there
was no national radio show. So I thought, well, maybe
I should do that because.

Speaker 9 (09:55):
I had a lot of fun doing the radio.

Speaker 8 (09:58):
And so I did, and I found this radio network
work with them, did Racing to the Kentucky Derby and
Racing to the Breeders' Cup for a couple of years,
and one thing led to another, and then I ended
up being asked to take over this show from Jay Pripman,
who walked away because he wasn't getting along with the

(10:21):
guy that owned the show, a gentleman named Steve Klappick.

Speaker 9 (10:26):
So I have to thank Steve first.

Speaker 8 (10:30):
I guess I should thank Jay. But anyway, Steve asked
me if I wanted to do this, and I said.

Speaker 9 (10:38):
Yeah, that'd be fun.

Speaker 8 (10:40):
So we did it for a little while and then
life is funny, right, Steve overplayed his hand and was
negotiating with Santa Anita about how much they were going
to pay to sponsor the show. And the person in
charge there at the time was Jack lee Bow, who
was still in the game at Lo Salamidos Low these

(11:02):
many years later, and Jack has got.

Speaker 9 (11:03):
To be up there in years. Jack's a very tough guy,
He's a lawyer. He has a little bit of a
mean streak. Not a guy you mess with.

Speaker 8 (11:11):
And Steve Klappik messed with him, and so Jack pulled
the Sponsorship's kind of like Santa Anita did. After today
here twenty two years later, so we've come full circle.
It was them pulling the sponsorship that ended up getting
me the show because Steve couldn't keep the show. I said, well,
I'll take it over and give it a shot, see
if I can make it work.

Speaker 9 (11:31):
And here we are.

Speaker 8 (11:33):
And today's the last day of Santa Anita sponsoring the show.
So sometimes I guess life works that way, complete full circle.
It's also interesting and ironic that there's two cow bred
races today, kind of cal cup type races, the Evening
Jewel and the Echo Eddie. And it was at a
big cow Cup party that they used to have in

(11:53):
the infield. Some of you remember that huge party, all
kinds of food and drink and everybody from the California
breeding industry and really just a lot of people from
all all parts of the industry. We'll go to that
party in the infield, and I met Steve Klappick out
there to discuss the opportunity, and I still remember, you know,

(12:13):
being out there and talking about it and then kind
of finishing that meeting and walking away going well, this
is going to be interesting.

Speaker 9 (12:20):
Get to host the.

Speaker 8 (12:21):
Saturday Sunday show in southern California and get my voice
out there, and we'll see what happens here. So that
was two thousand and four, and here we are. Smarty
Jones carried us through that first spring thanks to John
Peasan who was on the show and working at Oakland
at the time and got us the insight into Smarty

(12:43):
Jones before anybody. And thanks Stuart Elliott and John Servis
for coming on the show a few times and giving
us the insight into what was going on with Smarty Jones.
That was quite a phenomenon and it was great to
kind of get the show rolling with that and really
kind of well, we just kept it going and here
we are so pretty cool to have the caw Bread
races today.

Speaker 9 (13:03):
Excited to be out there today and see.

Speaker 8 (13:06):
That there won't be a big cal Cup party in
the infield today. Those days are long gone. But it
is Sanindia's Derby day. So we talked about Dubai. Let's
talk about sant A Neito a little bit before we
bring Steve on huge race today. Arguably the top two

(13:28):
contenders for the Kentucky Derby, you could say, are running
today against each other, and that would be number one
Journalism number two Citizen Bolt. Journalism has beaten four Bob
Bafford horses in the last two races, which is what
you have to do in southern California if you're going
to make it through. If you remember, Stronghold did it
last year and ended up beating Imagination in a great finish,

(13:53):
nosed him out at the wire of the Sanitia Derby.
He was the one non Bob Bafford good three year
old for practical move for tim Yachtine did the same
thing and beat all the Bob Bafforts and beat him
in the Santa Anita Derby as well. So we'll see
if journalism can keep the pattern going here. He's beaten Getaway,
Card Gaming, Rodriguez and Barnes in his last two races,

(14:15):
and he beat him pretty convincingly. Barnes is back today
to take another shot. Very impressive last time, but could
not answer when journalism came calling in mid stretch. So
journalism now has to beat the final and the best
of the Bob Baffort brigade, and that is Citizen Bull

(14:36):
of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Champ. It was an upset
that day. It was Baffert's one, two, three all the
way around the track until the wire. One of them
got nipped for third, but it was Citizen Bull and Gaming.
That was a weird Breeders Cup Juvenal. Nobody else did
any running. Citizen Bull just ran around there, not that fast,
actually got away with a pretty slow pace, and that

(14:57):
was that. He did the same thing this year Bob
lewis where his two biggest opponents were his stablemates. So
he's really had two or actually the last three races
he's been allowed to just get a pretty easy lead,
not have to go that fast and just cruise around there,
and he's been good enough to do that easily. He
will be tested today. He has not been tested in

(15:21):
these last three races. Not his fault, but today he'll
get tested by journalism. If he fires his race, we're
going to have something really cool happening mid stretch and
hopefully to the wire with these two. Barnes is very talented,
but again he just had no answer last time. Maybe
he improves off that race. If he does, boy, he

(15:44):
could be a big factor here too. And then the
outside horse Baeza. There's only five horses. They all cost
a ton of money, but Baiaza is a half brother
to Mage in door Knock.

Speaker 9 (15:57):
So the damn.

Speaker 8 (16:01):
The all time great dams of the last twenty years, right,
Mage and door Knock.

Speaker 9 (16:06):
Really, so here's Baeza.

Speaker 8 (16:08):
Cost a million two, didn't like the turd first time out,
got beat by Rodrigez second time out, and then just
dusted Maidens last time in mid February on Valentine's Day,
looked super impressive. It's been training great for John Sheriff's.
Can he beat the top two and here that would
be surprising. And he kind of has to to earn

(16:28):
his way to the Kentucky Derby because they knocked down
the points in this race. Because there's only five horses,
but he adds.

Speaker 9 (16:36):
Something to the mix too.

Speaker 8 (16:38):
Very talented, extremely well bred colt. So tiny field, kind
of like the brother Derek san Anita Derby, but a
really talented field and very exciting kind of you know,
not a match race, but a real showdown between journalism
and citizen bull. The voices in this race cost eight
hundred and twenty five thousand, six seventy five seven hundred

(17:01):
three point two million and one point two million, so
constant average of a million three or so to get
into the sant Anita Derby this year. Not easy, all right.
The rest of the card today, Race two is the
Echo Eddie for cowbreds six and a half on a dirt.
Race three is named.

Speaker 9 (17:21):
For the show.

Speaker 8 (17:21):
Jason Levine's inside racing is race three today. Race four
the sant Anita Oaks that features Baffert again with ten
moa vodka with a twist is back Madam's Secretary. An
interesting up and comer for Richard Mandela again. That's RaSE four.
Race five the Monrovia Down the Hill, really good race.

(17:42):
The outside trio look very tough in there. Queen of
the Mud, vin Gonza and Queen Maxima so two queens
and a ven Gonza in the Monrovia should be a
good one. Ray six is the Evening Jewel. That's the
cow bred three year old Phillies going six and a half.
And then Race ten is the sant Anita Derby on

(18:04):
a twelve race card that starts at noon noon.

Speaker 9 (18:08):
First post twelve race card.

Speaker 8 (18:11):
They got the five k out there, ten k whatever
it is race happening right now. We used to do
a lot of seminars on this day. I guess that
brings me to Steve. We've mentioned this on the show,
but it was so much fun.

Speaker 9 (18:25):
You know.

Speaker 8 (18:26):
We tried real hard to be ready and give people
winners and try to make the seminars exciting but also profitable.
We put together pick four and pick six tickets. We
hit some pick fours and eleven years ago with California
Chrome as one of our singles, we had two that day.

Speaker 9 (18:45):
We had to pick.

Speaker 8 (18:46):
Six for about twenty two thousand dollars for everybody. So
that's a good memory and hopefully Steve and I can
create another one out the other day, right, Steve.

Speaker 10 (18:56):
Boy, that sounds great.

Speaker 7 (18:57):
Jason. Yeah.

Speaker 10 (18:58):
The other horse that we had was attually a Ron
Ellis Sprinter, and every horse that day seemed to be
that they had to lead at the top of the lane.
They won on the wire, and you and I were
talking about that until that race, which was the second
to last race, and when that horse was clear length
and a half turning for home, we looked at each
other and said, well, it should be our day. And

(19:19):
it turned out to be the case. That horse went
all the way to the wire and we went all
the way to the windows.

Speaker 9 (19:24):
We did, And I still remember this.

Speaker 8 (19:26):
We had three horses in the last race and we
ran one, two three.

Speaker 9 (19:31):
Oh.

Speaker 8 (19:33):
That was a good feeling coming around.

Speaker 10 (19:35):
The good feeling that is. I don't know that I've
ever done that. Maybe I have maybe, well maybe I
had the all box in the last race before, but
I don't know that I've ever run where it was
just no doubt we're winning. Which one is it going
to be? And I don't think there was much of
a difference in the payout between the three of them.
I think we might have got the one in the middle,
but I just remember man oh Man at the sixteenth pole,

(19:57):
we were golden.

Speaker 7 (20:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (20:01):
The twenty three minutes in between, you know, leading up
to the last leg of a bet like that is
a weird twenty three minutes. It's exciting as hell and
scary as hell, and then of course the race itself
is but you know, to come off to turn and
realize mid stretch you've got it. That was really, really cool.

(20:22):
After a long, long day, that was that put a
caper on it. So you are going to be out
there today to do the seminar with one of the
great gentlemen of the game.

Speaker 9 (20:34):
Tom Quickly, What time is that?

Speaker 7 (20:36):
Is that?

Speaker 9 (20:36):
Ten forty five? Oh boy, you don't know.

Speaker 10 (20:41):
I don't know. I think that's that's the right time.
I'm sitting here in the Starbucks parking lot right near
the track and I was planning on going over and
then looking at the time, I think it is ten
forty five, Jason.

Speaker 8 (20:50):
I think so, because it's a noon first post, and
as we know.

Speaker 10 (20:53):
From the ghost and I know it's before eleven. Yeah,
so ten it's either ten thirty or ten forty five.

Speaker 8 (20:58):
Yeah, ten thirty or ten four five. People can find
that on the Santa Anita website and you'll be out
there doing that with Tom. I will come out there
probably halfway through towards the end. And if folks want
to say hi afterwards, we will be there and look
forward to greeting some folks and saying hi and thank
you and goodbye and whatever on a big, big day

(21:21):
and should be a gorgeous day it Santa Eat.

Speaker 9 (21:23):
It nice of the weather to cooperate.

Speaker 8 (21:25):
It's been crappy all meat and today is going to
be absolutely gorgeous and seventy eight degrees out there, so
that's going to be fun and.

Speaker 9 (21:34):
I look forward to it.

Speaker 8 (21:35):
I know you do too, and I know you're prepared.

Speaker 9 (21:37):
Big day today.

Speaker 8 (21:39):
They give us the PPS really early now world enough
to remember when it was the day before and you
had to get after it, but now you got plenty
of time and pretty cool card today.

Speaker 10 (21:52):
I think it's a great card, and I think you
make a great point.

Speaker 7 (21:54):
Man.

Speaker 10 (21:55):
I've been I've been niceally looking at this card for
two or three days, Jason, I can I make that
come in here? On the Santinita Derby. I think you
covered it well, but I wanted to add one thing please,
So the other horse that you didn't mention Westwood, who
I don't like in the race, but I think it's
very interesting that the actual owner of that race of
that horse. The RK Stable owns Biasa, and you know,

(22:19):
I wonder if that horse is just going to send
the Bristnet EP numbers are pretty good on that horse.
You know, Baffort has control of the pace, and I
think the key to the outcome. If BAASA or Journalism
is going to have a chance to beat Citizen Bull,
They're not going to want him to loaf along there
on the lead. And Westwood might be a big player
as far as who ends up winning this race. Certainly

(22:41):
a great race, and it's really not an easy race
to handicap, to be honest with you, Jason, but I
think these are certainly going to be big players. As
the Florida Derby was decent. I thought it was the
better of the two race. The Arkansas Derby, they really
fell apart last week, and I know those horses went
very very fast early, but Man Sanman was all over

(23:02):
the place. And I thought Publisher and Cole Battle were
just okay at best. And the Florida Derby, I sort
of like the way Sovereignty ran better than Tappan Street.
And you know, I think people know that's a Bill Mott,
but those horses weren't unbeatable, and I'm keeping my eyes
wide open today and certainly want to listen to what
you and Jay have to say about the Wood.

Speaker 8 (23:24):
Yeah, I would note one thing about Westwood. The reason
he's in the race is because they wanted to make
sure there were enough horses to get enough points for
Baiasa to potentially get into the Kentucky Derby. So they
were just really filling out the field. So I'm not
sure what that means for the pace, but that's why

(23:45):
he's in the race. They have a new rule that
if you have under six horses, they cut the points,
and that really will affect Biasa, who could have run
second and made it. Now they didn't get the six
horses even this horse in there, and now Baeza pretty
much has to win this race to get into the
Kentucky Derby. So interesting moves that were made here. But

(24:10):
that's why west was in the race, because just just
to fill it out to get Basa more points, and
it didn't work because nobody else entered. So anyway, that's
that I kind of agree about the other two races
last week. It'll be interesting to see what happens moving forward.

Speaker 9 (24:30):
Cole battle.

Speaker 8 (24:32):
You know, it didn't look great, but the trainer said
he was a work short. We'll see the best story
in the derby. You could certainly get a better price
on him now, Sandman, like you said, kind of wandering
all over the place, publisher I mentioned, I thought might
hit the board of the price he did in Florida.

Speaker 7 (24:52):
Yeah, that.

Speaker 8 (24:54):
Those two are nice horses, but I don't know. I
don't think anybody scared her tann Street or Sovereignty. So
I think these two today are the ones to watch,
and it's going to be really exciting and interesting to see.
To see this showdown kind of reminds me of boltdro
and Justify.

Speaker 9 (25:12):
I guess that's the one that comes to mind in
recent years.

Speaker 8 (25:17):
That was kind of a showdown and we found out
who was best that day. So anyway, we'll go from there.
So what else we got on? Anything on the racetrack?
Big Pick six yesterday, A lot of favorites towards the
end of the card, so a lot.

Speaker 9 (25:35):
Of people hit it, Big Pool, had a.

Speaker 8 (25:37):
Few Pick six carryovers, your sense of the track, a
turf chorus, dirt, anything to note before the big day?

Speaker 10 (25:44):
Yeah, I thought last weekend we really had the closers
really had a chance, Jason, including my fortunate radio winner
who I really liked anyway. But boy boy, you sure
did get a racetrack that really was in his favor,
which you know, folks, I think you got to watch
it every day. I mean that's something that I always do.
But you know, yesterday was more of a speed track,

(26:05):
and I would be very surprised if it was a
closers track today, Jason, Especially you get a big day
like today, you know, you always want those times to
be a little bit faster for the bigger races. And
just the way the weather is, it's absolutely couldn't be
any nicer here. It's gorgeous, blue as can be blue skies.
I think we'll see a very fast track today the

(26:28):
turf course. The rails are back at zero, closures have
done just fine. I think the turf course will be
extremely fair. But I would look for a speed oriented
racetrack today on the main track at stan Anita.

Speaker 9 (26:41):
Yeah, agreed.

Speaker 8 (26:42):
And I do have to mention that the role you've
been on for I don't know how long it's been
sixty eight weeks now continues positivity. You were so high
on that horse and got almost eight dollars on him,
just rolled and then you hit the free play too
on top of it. The next day public Assembly, who
you said was going to be coming late, and boy

(27:02):
did he get there in the nightcap and score there.
So couldn't be any hotter. You're about as hot as
the weather here. So a lot of opportunities today, a
lot of races to choose from, which is not always
the case on Saturdays, but was today, and you landed
on the race after the sant Anita Derby.

Speaker 7 (27:23):
Talk about.

Speaker 10 (27:25):
I did, Jason. This is race eleven. This is six
and a half furlongs down the hill. You and I
have talked about this for years, and if we say
it again, I will say it again. I just absolutely
love these races, so much fun to watch and a
lot of fun to bet on. And I think we've
got a good one in here today.

Speaker 9 (27:46):
I agree, agree with all of that. So let's let's
get to it all right.

Speaker 10 (27:51):
Jason got a lot of speed in this race. I've
got mon Jujka Mismandalay likes to press the pace. Thermal
summer Lake uh Nina is kind of a presser. I
think the pace is going to be hot in here, Jason,
I really like number five in here, Miss Roberts. Miss
Roberts is going to be the radio play for today.

Speaker 9 (28:10):
Uh.

Speaker 10 (28:11):
Hector Barrios riding Jeff Bowens has been on a real
good role. This horse's race two back. If you're if
you're someone who watches videotape, go ahead and watch dot
tape on the On the February first race, which was
down the hill, this horse actually did which you absolutely
can't do from the sixth post, and that is vere
Inward says off slow traffic. This horse actually broke inward

(28:35):
and when you're in the middle of the racetrack you
kind of want to stay there because, as you know,
the outside is the inside early and when you go
from the middle to the inside, you're actually losing ground
early in the race, which is what Miss Roberts did.
Actually think that she could have overcome that and won
the race, but van Ganza went inside and Barrios was

(28:58):
actually forced to go outside. There was some traffic, but
this horse was moving just fine. I think Burrios found
himself a good path, as he normally does. But the
fact that von Ganza got such a good, good ride
and this horse was two and a half links clear
of second. That was an outstanding race. You look at
her next race, Jason, the horse that she got beat

(29:18):
by in there, Queen Maxima. I tell you the truth, Jason,
I think this horse has a chance of winning the
Breeders Cup Sprint later on in the year. It's definitely
a horse that I'm keeping my eyes out for. I
don't know what the confessions of Queen Maxima thinks she's
that good, but she's gonna run Earlier in the card.
This horse ran against her at a flat six furlongs.
The difference between the flat six and six and a

(29:39):
half on the hill is like night and day, especially
for a horse that's a late runner like Miss Roberts.
I think eight to one would be a very good bet.
So I'm definitely there on Miss Roberts on the wind play.
I'm going to use four horses here in the exact
the three Miss Mandalay really ran well when she ran
down the hill. Just getting beat a half a length
did all. She might have to do too much dirty

(30:00):
working here, but I think she can hang around for
a piece. The four horse, Soho is a first time
horse with blinkers again, might be part of the pace.
But I think this one's gonna run well, and I
just want to say no note to Thiago Pereira, what
should I say? Props to Thiago Pereira. This guy's really improved, Jason.
I got to say inside used to be his bugaboo,

(30:24):
and now he seems to be much more relaxed down
there on the horses. I wish he wouldn't stand and
raise his whip every time he wins a five thousand
dollars claiming race, but that's another story. But I think
this guy is really really becoming one of the better
riders on the circuit. Not a Center looks like the
horse to beat, and I think this one will get
a good setup, and I think the price play in
the race is the nine horse Andiamo Regaza, and I'm

(30:47):
going to go back to the sheets on this one.
This one looks like a horse that's gonna run a
better race today. The race four back on sheets is
very very good. The last one was not quite as
good at a shorter distance, but this horse put the
blinkers on in that race, and I think this one
goes forward today at a big number. So this one
spices up the exotics in here going to play the

(31:07):
five Miss Roberts to win using three four eight to
nine and exactly boxes, and then we'll play that try
I play the five first and second with three four
eight nine. It'll cost you twelve dollars a copy. Jason,
it's the five Miss Roberts down the hill in race
eleven at sant Anita Today.

Speaker 8 (31:24):
There we go not race will go off about five
fifteen or so. It's the race after the big Santa
Anita derby. A lot of people will be leaving after
any derby, that's one of the what usually happens, and
they're going to be missing a really nice race.

Speaker 9 (31:37):
This is a good race.

Speaker 8 (31:39):
I actually bet Miss Roberts in that race where she
ran second to Ben Goonza. So I watched that trip
very carefully. Was not thrilled about it. Well, certainly not
about to break. But as you were explaining, and I'm like, oh,
I remember that race. So yeah, she's really interesting in here.
And Jeff Mullins not my favorite guy any stretch of imagination,

(32:00):
but this is as good as he's been going since
the golden days, back when he won some San Anita derby's,
when he was doing whatever the heck he wanted to
do and getting away with it. But he's thirty one
percent at this meet, thirty three percent for the year.
His horses are firing all over the place. So the
five Miss Roberts and Race eleven with three, four, eight,

(32:23):
and nine for you, Steve, enjoyed the rest of your Starbucks,
have a great seminar with Tom on a beautiful day,
and I will see you out there around eleven thirty
or so.

Speaker 10 (32:40):
I can't wait, Jason. I hope the fans really enjoyed today.
What a great day of racing.

Speaker 8 (32:44):
We have.

Speaker 10 (32:45):
Enjoy yourselves out there, and we'll look forward to talking
everybody next week.

Speaker 8 (32:50):

The man is scalding. It's like the Dodgers.

Speaker 7 (32:59):

Speaker 9 (33:01):
It's been a pleasure to have Steve on the show
for so long and to be.

Speaker 8 (33:04):
Able to learn from him and just see him deliver
over and over and over again. And this run in
twenty twenty five, as we close things out here, has
been truly special. So I'm glad a lot of you
have been along for the ride and getting some nice
notes from people who.

Speaker 9 (33:21):
Have been scoring along with Steve.

Speaker 8 (33:23):
And we'll see if we can keep the role going here.
All right, We're going to take our first break when
we come back. Jay Friedland who joins me. It's some
damage at Gulfstream. He's got some aqueduct bonuses.

more here.

Speaker 8 (36:22):

we got to bring on, Our Man.

Speaker 8 (36:44):
Jay friedlander he is Finished With, gulf stream going to
be Moving his saturday tack out of Town, to, keenland
which if you, don't know is not running today because
of the ridiculously bad weather they've been hit with.

Speaker 9 (36:58):
The last, few days so they shifted TODAY to i Believe.

Speaker 8 (37:02):
It's, monday no They shifted Friday to monday and Today.
To tuesday so their big card including, the bluegrass will
Be on tuesday this week because of all. The Weather
and jay Will have Keenland next saturday and then moving
Forward Into kentucky derby time and he can talk. About
that but a nice fifteen Dollars Winter gulf stream to close,

(37:24):
it out hit The middle pick four for about one
hundred and, forty bucks and yesterday the late pick four,
five times which you needed because it didn't pay, a lot,
but hey you work with what, you.

Speaker 7 (37:35):
Got, Right jake, good. Morning yep, so, yeah yeah there's
a lot. Going on and just on the subject, of,
MUSIC yeah I Love peter tosh and but there's a
nice free jazz concert Tonight at tracks the Restaurant At,
union station so if, anybody's around we'll come. On out

(37:57):
should be some. Great music so interesting as far as
before we get to the, races, today obviously what's going
on in the news right now is the tariffs that everybody's.
Talking about and you've been watching your F one k's
you know all about, those TERRAFFS but i did want
to mention this does have some effect on horse racing
because these horses are sometimes imported from other countries and

(38:21):
it seems like we get a lot of horses that
cream of the Crop from europe and we're really around.
The world as far as turf, horses go tend To, Be,
england France. And Ireland and england broke away FROM the
eu a few, years Ago but France and ireland are
still part, of it and that means they are subject
to an even. Bigger tariff the Horses from england will

(38:45):
have a ten, percent Tariff but Ireland and france. Twenty
PERCENT and i think what that means to. Horse racing
you'll see less horses from Countries like Ireland and france coming,
over here and maybe a little more of a chance
for some Of these american horses that have not been
holding up too well Against, these yeah.

Speaker 9 (39:01):
Fewer shippers made a better chance.

Speaker 8 (39:03):
For, THEM well, i mean we're talking About some titanic,
stupidity here but world record all time in the history
of the, planet stupidity and it's going to affect just.
About everything, and yes it is going to affect. TOWARDS
racing i think they did something About the canadian issue
and there's an exception Made for canadian imports that got.

(39:23):
Carved out, but yes this is affecting everybody already and
we'll continue too because of the level of insanity and
absolutely not no reason for this to be done, this way,
but hey have an insane person, in charge nobody's there to.
Stop them all kinds of. Stuff happens so, but yes

(39:48):
that should be interesting to follow over the course of
this year and see if that actually, does happen and
then fewer shippers come over and fewer are bought and.
Brought over there's a lot of people that's their business
forces Over in europe and then, you know getting people
to buy them and bringing them, over here so that
that business is going to take a hit, for sure
as are many already taking.

Speaker 9 (40:10):
A hit well the world we live in.

Speaker 8 (40:14):
Right now so so you got to play what's put
in front. Of you let's let's get to the races
and talk about what's going, on today because tremendous action on,
Both coasts Aqueduct And santa anita rocking and rolling today
from beginning, to end great cards at. Both places you
put the middle pick Four from aqueduct And The wood

(40:36):
memorial On The santa nita.

Speaker 9 (40:38):
Full, card correct.

Speaker 7 (40:40):
That's, IT yeah i just thought that middle one was.
More playable that last one is going to be a
fun one, to PLAY and i advise people to, play
it but it's going to, be tougher but you'll get
paid on that. LAST one. I didn't i want to
go for the low. Hanging fruit there.

Speaker 8 (40:53):
You go, that's fine, Fair enough so let's Start at
aqueduct AND the i guess some of the intrigue in
this race Is That bob baffort having a brigade of
three year olds Shipped, in rodriguez who has speed and drew.
The rail rodriguez has been Beaten by Journalism And citizen

(41:15):
bolt in his last, two races which makes him the
class of this race just. By default he's been facing
certainly the best horses anybody's. Faced here he does have
to ship all the way across, the country does draw,
the rail, and interestingly the Last two baffort horses who
shipped out and went to the lead both faded and,
up fourth and That was Cornicopian in Arkansas And mandicot Road.

(41:38):
In florida so the baffort brigade not doing the damage
they did a few years ago when they head out on.
The Road and rodriguez is the last of the group
to take his shot today against the full field back
there Led By captain cook who Won the Withers For,
Richard Dutrow sand Devil For Linda Rice hill road scratched

(42:02):
for people that don't know that he was the. Big
closer he's Out in Grande For todd pletcher comes Up
From gulf stream off two very. Impressive Wins berri klin necklace.
Also scratched, That's that so let's.

Speaker 7 (42:16):
Dig in a. Little, bit, YEAH yeah i want To.
Say rodriguez the other horse That beat rodriguez was The Other.
Baffert barnes barnes goes To the sandby and Reportedly and
rodriguez was Thrashed by barns pretty severely by about nine and.
A quarter but in recent works reports Are that rodriguez
has been Out. Working BARNS so I, THINK barnes i

(42:39):
think you can look at as a bet against today Understanding.
OF derby i don't like his chances. Very, MUCH rodriguez
i think certainly will have. A shot but the last
two speed figures coming out Of The robert lewis And
The san pelipe been kind of pedestrian ninety one on
the scale on the, brist scale and that's generally not

(42:59):
going to get. It done and the wood bar level
here is ninety Eight and rodriguez is gonna have to
step up. His game but a horse that will not
have to step up his game IS one i like
here and that's. Number Two. Captain Cook captain cook comes
out Of The richard dutro Bar and richard was the
second leading trainer At The winter meet and forty six

(43:19):
percent wins For The Sanity. Winter meat he's still hitting
at thirty two percent for, the year and he's teaming
Up With alan benno with his, Favorite Job. Nanny Franco
nanny franco was the leading jock by a distance at that,
winter meet and these two team up for thirty six.
Percent Wins captain cook is two for three then when

(43:40):
took those front wraps off in the second race and
just exploded for his maiden win by nine a, quarter
lengths and then came back to Win the withers the
stakes race and put one hundred brist figure on. The
SCALE so I Think captain cook has a really solid
shot here upset, the favorite liking Number Two captain cook in.

Speaker 8 (43:58):
The, wood yeah he's an. Interesting horse they've given him
time since. That Race the Withers and dutro said that after, The, race,
wall okay that, was Great and frankly said he was
a little surprised at How Well captain. Cook ran he
didn't really know what he had there with this horse
because the maiden wom was in, the slop so you don't.
Quite know and sure enough he ran great in, the

(44:21):
weathers really impressive three and four wide on the turn
and just kind of cruised by everybody and held them.
Off easily so given a Break since, february first so
this is he should be absolutely fit and ready to
go for. That Man richard dutro coming off a ten
year suspension which, he earned he doesn't, believe that but.

(44:41):
He did he also doesn't think the veterinarian should. Be
involved isn't it great that it's always the guys that
they catch that come back and then say, trust me
YOU know i know more.

Speaker 11 (44:53):
Trust, me, no, no no these bets they don't know
anything they're scratching a lot of really, you know. Sound
horses this Is ridicul what are they doing? To us he's,
already complaining so kind of tells you where. He's AT
but i read that this week and just. Started laughing,
i'm like it's.

Speaker 8 (45:08):
Always, those guys so we should trust you because your
track record is. So stellar just unbelieve some of. These
guys it's just amazing that they can even look themselves in.
The mirror but he's one, of them and He's Got
captain cook, for you who does look pretty tough.

Speaker 9 (45:24):
In here what about exotics With.

Speaker 7 (45:27):
The, captain yeah we're gonna Throw On hill road was
in the, original trifecta but obviously he's, out today but
we are Gonna. Use rodriguez we're gonna Use, sand devil
who's eight to one and won't be with, the scratches
and we'll throw in a big long Shot From Bill
mott tiger twenty four just he obviously will have to
take a big, step forward but just broke his maiden by,
five length and especially with, these scratches he's got a

(45:49):
shot to hit, the board and who knows if he
improves a, little more let's fight, Like this we'll play
a fifty cent trifecta two with one three five with
all two with one, three five with one three five
five with two with one three five and one three
five with one three five with Number Two captain cook
nice one Bed On. Captain cook, all.

Speaker 8 (46:07):
Right and that is race twelve that should go off
right around, three o'clock little after Three o'clock. California time,
all right let's jump To sant anita where you gonna
kick us off with race, for one right.

Speaker 7 (46:19):
We, are yeah we're gonna look at race. ONE here
I just i know there's all the stakes races on.
THE cart i just we're trying to win some, money
here and we're not really worried about how the classiest
horses on. The card and these are not. Bad horses
these are straight maidens and some of them have. A
future and the favorite here is. Number nine misspractical had
easily the best, speed figure but earn that. On dirt

(46:40):
the turf reading, IS okay I Mean miss metropolis on
the bottom is a Daughter Of, leroy danamu who is
a pretty good. Turf horse, but, really yes spring have
not been the offspring have, not been, you know Overwhelming
And practical joke is really a, dirt sire so, you
know and only get seven percent first. Time turf so

(47:00):
With something i'm proven, Like this misspractical would certainly take
to the Turf With. Hector, barios nevertheless we're going to
try to beat her with the one. Right below that's,
Number ten Odie's. Memory lane Odie's memory lane is by
far the speed of the field and gets the best
send jock in The Colony edwin Maldonado and. Linkers today
so guess what the game plan Is with Odie's. Memory

(47:22):
lane this one's got to blast out of, the GATE
and i, just think, YOU know i can't imagine this
one's not going to be, clear early and then the
question is can? It hold but if you look last
time when they legged up for, a mile ran pretty
well opened up at this six furlong marker which at
the distance today and then caved a little. Bit late
but that Should set Odie's memory lane up perfectly for.

(47:42):
SIX furlocks i just think she's got a nice shot
at nine to two is a really, square price and
with the other horse probably taking, MORE money i think
you're going to get that nine.

Speaker 8 (47:52):
To, TWO yeah i thought it was a really interesting
opening race. In here it's just a really. Nice card
would like it to start off good and it. DID
this i went through this race, pretty closely and you
know the cutback from the mile to the sixth prolong Should.
Help odie the outside post is. Pretty good blinkers, go

(48:12):
on like, You. Said maldonado, so yeah there's no secret
about what's happening here with The Ten Odie's memory lane
looking for the break maiden and start, number six fourth
start on.

Speaker 9 (48:23):
The turf Sire was.

Speaker 8 (48:25):
I'll have Another Sant anita derby winner among the things
out of A square. Eddy mare so this is a
red em racing bread top, and bottom but owned by.
Somebody else so here. We go brothers Trained by, doug
O'Neill who's got a couple of horses In The Dubai world.
Cup today Katona and mixedo are going to take their
Shot Against forever young and good luck to them. Over

(48:45):
there but He's Got Odie's memory lane to ten in
race one at.

Speaker 9 (48:50):
Noon today and what.

Speaker 7 (48:52):
About, exotics yeah we'll playing exactly here and you could
make a case to use these horses. In tripecta maybe some,
people Will but i'm going to go for the surer.
Money here we'll Use, Very smart guilty of, having fun
first time Starter Under, Je hernandez Kick a Ride And
miss Practical And. Darling tam you will use those five

(49:13):
so ten with four or five eight nine eleven four
five eight nine eleven with Number Ten Odie's. Memory lane
definitely a win bet and maybe a place bet if
the price. Holds, UP yeah i don't.

Speaker 8 (49:24):
KNOW what i couldn't really figure out where the money
was going to, go. HERE really, i mean definitely we'll,
get BET but i could say around nine. TO two
i think there's some mother horses that are going to
take some money, in HERE and i think a couple
of the first time starters, Will too so it'd be
interesting to see what happens with outboard in race. Number
One Added santa Anita On Santa Anita. Derby day been

(49:46):
an awful lot Of Sant anita derby's, For me so
this is.

Speaker 9 (49:48):
Going to put one more on the.

Speaker 8 (49:49):
List, here jay excited to see you out. THERE today
i know you're going to come out, as well and
we'll all go in the winter circle for that.
