Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to the Excel Center, Mike chris Pino, joined
by Luke Murray, you kind assistant. After the overtime win
by the Huskies, it was a thriller. Always good to
win thrillers, but there were some very anxious moments in
that game.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
There really were.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
I mean, we get down five with about four minutes
to go, some amazing shot making by Xavier and you know, Solo,
who hadn't played great to that point, you know, comes
up with some big shots. I think he went on
a little eight to zero run himself, or at least
scored eight of the points in that run to get
us back in front.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
But yeah, it was tight there.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
What does it mean for a guy like him? Do
you think he's a sophomore now he's playing more Obviously
he's an important player a lot of minutes. Then he
gets in a game like this and he does that.
Is that going to help him? Is that going to
boost his confidence now when he gets in crunch time
and going down the stretch?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
I'm sure.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
I mean last season, you know, he started the first
Big East game of the season and then didn't start
again the rest of the year, you know, and I
think for him to be able to go into big,
big East play against a really good team and work
through some adversity. You know, honestly, didn't get off to
a very good start to the game, had some defense,
some mischews, wasn't playing great offensively, and to stay with
it and finish the way that he did, I think
that'll help him big time.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Yeah, Terris Reed Junior again another double doubles. It's almost
automatic these days. We have twenty points and again he
gets thirteen boards. How important is that guy right now?
With Samson? Obviously, if he can come back quickly, that'll
be great, but right now, Reid had this, he started
the ball game. He had to make some stuff happen.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah, I mean he was hugely important.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
I mean obviously, like you mentioned, especially with Sampson out
of the game, for him to step up the way
that he did. You know, twenty points, thirteen rebounds, four
block shots to go six or six from the line,
you know, make some crucial ones late. You know, he
was terrific for us today, and that's the kind of
guy that we need the rest of the way.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
Alex Caravan in overtime, I mean, that's what you expect
from a guy who's wearing two rings.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
You have to have it though, right, You had to
have it. You had to have it.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
I mean, that first shot of overtime to put us
up three was the first time you were kind of
able to breathe a little bit in.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Probably fifteen or twenty minutes of real time. So that
was big.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
You know, made a couple other big plays down the
stretch as well. You know, again, he was the kind
of recipient of some unfortunate luck a couple of times
guarding a guy like Maddox who made some really hard
shots off the dribble. But credit to him for staying
with and kind of having that championship answer.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Yeah, thirteen for twenty four. I know, you guys will
go back there and you'll look at these numbers and
you'll say, thirteen three pointers Xavier made. That's not good.
That cannot happen. How do you fix that? How do
you get better in that category? Look like you were
improving last couple of games, and then this these guys
just go nuts tonight.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah. I don't know.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
I mean, that's gonna We're gonna have to go back
and watch the film.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
I thought.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Defensively, to start the game, we got off to a
pretty good start, you know. I think going into the
first media timeout they were like four for fourteen from
the field or something like that.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
That's right.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
But then they got incredibly hot. I mean that second
half they shot seventy percent from the field.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
They shot eighty percent from three.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
You know, Dante Maddox, who's a good player but was
shooting thirty percent from three for the season and averaging
five points a game, is making off the dribble, contested
threes with people.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Hanging on him. You know.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
So again, I'm gonna have to go back and watch
the tape, but I think that there was some remarkable
shot making on the part of Xavier and then a
couple of breakdowns, you know, defensively, some things that you know,
we had that we didn't do a good enough job
of executing.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
There was a weird end to regulation, wasn't it, well,
going to the free throw line on plays away from
the ball. Wouldn't players going to the rim getting fouled? Yeah,
that was a strange ending to that game.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Regulation, it was, you know, I think at the time
there was some frustration, but you know, when you think
about it, with the way that they were shooting the
ball from three. You know, there's kind of like this
new age sort of way of thinking about it that
you would foul and put him on the line, and
it's like, okay, we get the last shot. You know,
you're not going to have an opportunity to make a
three point shot when you're as hot as you are
and have the ball in your hands, provided you're going
to rebound the ball. You know you're going to get

(03:32):
the ball back in our hands, which we did. And honestly,
I thought there was some contact on Liam's drive for sure,
which could have ended the game that way, but not
exactly the finish that we were looking for down the stretch,
but obviously showed a lot of fortituding overtime.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Yeah, wins and wins. A win Liam McNeely got followed
trouble issues and you know how to play through that.
He only played twenty minutes. But he continues to do
stuff right. I mean, makes all five of his free throws,
he gets Forrest's no turnovers. He just seems to be
able to come up with stuff when he needs it.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, I mean he's an excellent player, you know, I know,
one game plus minuses are sometimes not totally indicative of
the story. But he was a plus thirteen and the
twenty minutes that he played, I thought he was terrific.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
You know.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
If he wasn't in foul trouble, I think he has
an even bigger impact on the game. But you know,
you mentioned fourteen points, making some big shots down the stretch,
and I thought some excellent passing, you know, a couple
of times found terras, you know, for some big time finishes.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Around the rim. So yeah, Liams, Liam's on the move.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Yeah, this year's team is Luke Marie with us. It's
it's gonna be like a little bit of everything. We
got to find a way every night. It's fun to watch.
I'm sure it gives you sleepless nights. But you know
what I'm saying, it's like a different deal here. It's
not like you got him roll into town and put
ninety on the board and win. It's not going to
be that easy, is it.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
No, it's not. It's not.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
You know, it's a different team than last year's team.
But it's an exciting team to be a part of,
you know, because everybody's stepping up in their own ways.
I mean, even the guys that didn't really make a
mark on the stat sheet.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
As far as scoring is concerned.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
You know, the forty minutes from Jaden Ross and Jalen
Stewart I thought were really good minutes. You know, Jay
Stu got a backcut layup, but I thought he he
helped to us. Jayden Ross, you know, played excellent defense
on Maddox and on Conwell at times. So yeah, those
guys are helping us, and we're excited about kind of
the direction that we're heading in.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
All right, enjoy this one, coach, And uh, that's on
the butler.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
I guess on the butler. Let's go practice tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Yeah, practice tomorrow, all right, enjoy it tonight at least
I'll be watching butler.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
I know you will see.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
All right, that's Luke Murray with us on the post game.
We appreciate him and
