(00:00):
So what's this week been like. It's been kind of a lot of stuff
going on. Yeah. Well, there's a good thing about um this uh,
this job is that there's always stuffgoing on constantly, um, all
the time, especially with all thechanges to the rules and everything. So
you just, uh it's it's verycomfortable when when things, I guess on
the outside world outsiders feel like it'sa little bit chaotic, uh, but
(00:24):
for us, we're very comfortable,um, you know with all this going
on because it's uh, just areality of what it is daily. So
just opportunities that being presented to yourplayers because of it's I think everything that
has happened to this point, um, is exactly what we thought was going
to happen. I've said this duringthe course of the year. I think
you you could anticipate in January, who, um, you know, who's
(00:48):
going to end up going in theportal. You know, if it's a
player that's older, um, youknow that that's been looking at a situation
where maybe you know they're at theend of their career and they want a
bigger role, they're more than likelygoing to going to move on on.
Um. You know. For us, I think we anticipated having a national
championship year. Uh. This iswhat elite programs face. You know,
(01:08):
they face, Um, you know, players leaving early to the NBA,
they face Uh, you know, players going through the draft process, maintaining
eligibility. UM. You know youusually UM, obviously there's usually staff,
major staff changes, which you know, to this point, we're fortunate to
be intact there. But it's it'sa reality of being an elite program.
(01:30):
Now that's where we're at. We'regonna be deal with this every year.
I was about to ask, isthat going to be the new normal for
UC on basketball? And is thatthe way you want it? Um?
I mean I would prefer it tobe to be a little more stable.
Um. But I think when youget to this level of college basketball and
your your national champion, and yourplayers have lots of value, and your
coaching staff has lots of value becauseyou're very successful, opportunities get created.
(01:55):
Um. Unlike last year, whenit was pretty crystal clear um that that
players we're moving on, it waseasier for us to to make moves rosterwise.
UM, We're gonna have to havesome patience and kind of some some
plans in the back of our mindsas to you know what we're Tristan an
Andre situation. Um, if oneof them's back, if both of them
(02:19):
are back, if neither's back,Uh, you know what we're gonna what
We're gonna look to do. Um. But right now I think our focus
is, um, you know,we're going to return five to seven players
from a national championship team. We'vegot, uh, you know, an
elite recruiting class coming in that's oneof the best in the country, and
I think a couple of those guysare actually underrated, um, you know,
(02:44):
and and there's going to be alittle bit of uncertainty for the next
month for us, and we're goingto focus on twenty four recruiting and bring
in another elite class in that class, and then you know, some moves
maybe for next year's team. We'regoing to have to probably wait a little
while, um, until we havea little more clarity. But those guys
have to do because I mean, obviously you want good players. Some plays
(03:04):
plays don't want to be on yourschedule. They want to make decision for
yeah. Ready, It's just it'shard because, um, you know,
if you're trying to recruit a playerright now, if you're looking for some
type of a piece, It's it'shard to give them a vision of what
they're walking into. When, um, you know, when you have two
perimeter I mean you have you haveone of the best point guards in the
country in Tristan, and then youhave one of you know, the best
(03:27):
all around perimeter people in the country. You're in the draft process, it's
it's hard to recruit um with thattype of uncertainty. So um, but
this is why we went out andinvest of the time that we did in
the twenty three class. Uh.And then obviously, um, we've got
uh two of the best returning frontcourt players in the country that we're obviously
(03:47):
going to build around. And thenyou know, we'll see how Tristan and
Alex and Donovan and then we seeTristan and uh you see how Tristan and
Andre how this plays out of itof course for the next month or so.
Uh. And we also feel like, uh, we got some guys
here in Hassan and Sampson that arealmost like new recruits for us. Two
guys I think that we're going togive us a lot more um than we
(04:10):
have. Apostleis who we really believein game when you're trying to retain guys
and even when you're trying to bringguys in, how much has the NIL
change that can when you can saythe player, hey, you're famous in
Connecticut. You you get opportunity tomake money here with without leaving, yeah,
or by coming here. Yeah.Um, somebody open there. Yeah
(04:33):
yeah, I think yeah, youlisten, you're your NIL has got to
be has got to be strong,um in today's game, and you know
to to to stay at this level. Um, you know, our n
I l our collective here is goingto have to be really strong. I've
said this a lot. Uh.I don't want it to be a reason
why players come here. I wantplayers to want to play for me.
(04:57):
I want players to want to playfor this story program. I want players
to want to be part of ourculture. I want players to see this
as a place where they could developand become NBA players, where you know,
where the big, big life changingopportunities are in their career. So.
Um, but we also don't wantto lose players because of it in
terms of retention and um, youknow, but I don't want it to
(05:19):
be you know, the primary reasonas a as a as a type of
coach that I am. That that'swhy players want to come here. Is
it hard to with the uncertainty betweenwith Fishing and Andre? Having all said
all that, is it hard tokind of the type of player you might
be looking for in the portal orwhether it be a shooter or a big
or whatever. Yeah, I meanif you look, you know, I
(05:42):
think, um, you know,it's just it's tough right now either to
um, you know, to sella vision to a player or to really
have a vision for a player whenit is uncertain. And I think for
us it's, uh, we'll throwour focus on on getting those like blue
chip eat guys that we believe areare those foundation players in twenty four to
(06:04):
continue to stockpile, you know, the elite players in these high school classes,
and then you know, I thinkyou start to get feedback as these
as days turn into the next coupleof weeks with with Tristan and Andre,
obviously, uh, you know we'rein a perfect world those guys, you
know, you know, Tristan makeshimself turns himself into a draft pick like
(06:25):
Tyrese did, and Andre becomes afirst round pick. I mean, in
a perfect world, that's what happens. I mean, obviously that's not the
best interest of our season next year, but it's in the best interest of
our program and because of everything thoseguys, those two guys have done for
us. So yeah, I meanit's going to be, uh, you
know, for us, it's goingto be uncertain for the next month in
terms of what the you know, what it's going to totally look like on
(06:47):
the court. But you know, the staff and the fans, you know
that this group just to deliver toa national championship, we gotta be I
think we owe it to the programto be a little patient and to you
know, not Yeah, what's theprocess like for those two guys that we're
talking to you? And then didthey just come in this week and tell
you I'm going to go to theNBA are gonna put myself in the draft?
(07:10):
What was your role in that? And how did you find out?
No, I mean we've known fora couple of weeks or no, I
think we were playing a couple ofweeks ago. It feels like we um
No, we've had conversations with thosetwo guys. I would say for the
last week to ten days. Ithink it's been more. Um, you
know, those guys being aligned withthe right representation and then just coming up
(07:31):
with a plan for you know wherethey're going to work out in train and
they've obviously been in our workouts andwe'll continue to take care of the academics
until then. Um. You knowthe difference between a Dama, uh and
Jordan and Andre and Tristan as they'dmaintain the eligibility, whereas the other two
guys have turned pro So these guysare still here and the other guys are
(07:53):
gone. Do you feel like thekids who had to make decisions have made
them? Like who's here now? It's you're pretty fe good like like guys
like Asan SAMs. Yeah, it'sgot a coming back. Yeah, yeah,
I mean we've we've had those meetingsand and uh, um it looks
like that's where we're at, um, you know, with the group and
and uh you know, we goforward. I mean they see an opportunity,
(08:13):
you know, particularly at their particularposition, there's going to be opportunities
on the perimeters of the opportunities inFroe Court. Um, you know,
we we've lost some people and obviously, uh, you know, we got
we got some tremendous returners and thenobviously the big recruiting class. We'll see
what happens with those two guys. Are you expecting the staff to stay the
same or or or I mean youwould think Kimi and Luke would get some
(08:35):
I mean I was a year ago. For me, just the only thing
that really interests me is is uh, you know, adding the general manager
piece. I wanted to do itbefore other people. I think Kimani told
me it was stupid or Luke,I don't know. Somebody told me it
was. It was they looked atme before Duke did it. I wanted
to do it, um, butsomebody up there, I don't know.
(09:00):
I can't remember if it was Lucer, Come on, it wasn't Tom.
Somebody said it was a bad idea. But for me, just with where
the game is now, like we'restill a program in a sense, we
have a culture, but this collegebasketball is now, you're it's an organization
and there with the re recruitment ofplayers in your program and the portal and
(09:22):
a lot of things that are goingon now. I think if you,
if you're a top level organization incollege basketball college football, you better have
somebody that looks at themselves like ageneral manager that's dealing with schedule, that's
dealing with the conference, that's dealingwith the nil, that's raising money,
and looking it at that, Ithink it's almost more important than maybe even
(09:43):
you know, critical staff positions.I think it's going to become the thing.
Is it a different challenge for younow to get the hunger back or
keep the hunger in the building nowthat you think No, I mean I'm
ready to go. I mean Ican't wait to get a break in May
at some point when things have settleda little bit. But no, I
am um no, no, no, no, no, no. Once
(10:07):
you get a taste of that,I mean, once you experience that,
uh, I think you're desired toget back into and to do it again,
and to do it again, andto do it with with people that
haven't experienced that. I mean thatexperience you want to deliver to more people
that you care about and more peoplethat you recruit and envision doing it with.
And you just want to experience thatwith more people that you that you
(10:31):
care about, because it's so incredible. Sampson h could you see him playing
with five next year? I meanI think we have a lot of flexibility.
I think Alex, Um, youknow, guys like Alex and Jaylen
Stewart have the flexibility to play onthe perimeter. Uh. They're both super
skilled. They both can shoot, you know, which opens up minutes at
the four and um, you know, and and and Sampson obviously, uh,
(10:54):
you know, could play either frontcourt position. And I think he's
intent on, you know, tryingto really build up his body in the
weight room. And um, youknow it's Donovan's not going to be able
to be a thirty two to thirtyfour minute a game player, nor do
we want them to be. Um, you know, we want we want
Donovan to be able to be inthat twenty six you know, twenty six
(11:15):
to twenty eight minute range I thinkin a perfect world. And so there's
uh, you know, there's goingto be more front court minutes there.
So Sampson, even you're asking tobe patient, all ye, he's been
patient. I guess he has.He has it. I you credit people
that, um that don't want toleave this level, that believe that they
are that they can you know, they can get the role or earn the
(11:35):
role that they want and not leavethis level. And and and and also
want the responsibility of keeping the programat the level that it's at. Um
And you got a ton of respectfor guys like Hassan and and uh and
Samson an Apostolus Um, you knowfor wanting to u you know, to
earn their way on the court anduh, you know, for the you
(11:56):
know, the defending national champs. It's great and it may be a dumb
question, but but no, no, no, there's there's there. Well,
I was just listening to the podcast. Yes they're talking about this,
and I was like, I wassaying, now, you know, I
was to it, Adama, there'sno chance of him coming back. Here's
that fair to say? I mean, yeah, I mean with what just
(12:18):
to what we witnessed there in theconversations and um, you know, and
yeah, you know his full tentis his pro bawl and you know,
I think he's uh, I thinkhe's gonna be this year's Tyrese. But
yeah, Adama's done with with collegebasketball. There's got to be more,
(12:39):
right, what are we forgetting offeasy? I won't see this girl the
summer summer numbers wise, obviously, you know, you have a lot of
guys I've gone or just yeah, like possibilities to affect your world. No,
I don't think so. I think, uh, you know, unfortunately
for my son Andrew, um,but his cardio is pretty good. He
(13:00):
played and every enst double a game. So now I just think we were
so intent last year to get tothirteen for practice purposes, and you know,
I would say that maybe maybe youlook for a variety of reasons.
Maybe you think about the roster beingmaybe eleven or twelve m and just make
(13:24):
sure that that the that the walkOns can help you practice, because there
are other things that are you know, there's other considerations like it just puts
you in a situation where more peopleare going into portal. Um, you
know there's also nil there where nowyou have more people. Um. So
yeah, I think, Um,I don't know that we'll be as um,
(13:48):
you know, as focused on tryingto get to the maximum number as
we are just feeling great about ourteam. And at what date do you
expect to have the roster set,the staff set, everything so well,
I mean we didn't get I meanJoey California was in was in June,
and I remember there was a lotof consternation about our offseason last summer.
(14:09):
So um, I don't think wecan. I don't think we're necessarily know
when it's all going to come together. We have to get you know,
we learned a lot about roster construction. We learned a lot about personalities,
We learned a lot about um,you know, how we want to set
up our team at both ends ofthe court in terms of the skills and
the way we want to play amirror the way we just played it.
(14:31):
So um, and make some adjustmentsfor personnel. But yeah, I mean,
I just think we're just going tohave to be patient. It's not
easy for me because as you cantell, patience is not my greatest virtue,
and it's not for our fans orfor my staff. So but we
all going to have to be patient, and they're just everyone's just going to
have to occasually just look up atthe banner or the trophy. Anytime that
(14:54):
they just start to lose patience andlose their mind, just look look up
there, or get a replica.Find Jimmy California. Now, I guess
I'm if I could ever I mean, listen, if there's ever a kid
from from California that could make threesand that's some guts Well, I mean
there's some big opportunities now, SoI don't don't think we're not looking.
You know, we've got Jalen fromyou know, we've got Jalen from Seattle.
(15:18):
But find that a guy that couldmake some threes from California right now.
I mean that's a pretty pretty gooddeal. Whether this year or in
the future. What's going to makeAndres such a good grow you guys?
Yeah, yeah, I just thinkthat, Um, there's a number of
players in the NBA that, youknow, whether again it's like a Draymond
(15:39):
Green or uh Bruce Brown. Um, you know, if there's a number
of guys in the NBA right nowthat are being very successful on NBA teams
that you know aren't necessarily three pointshooters, they're just all around tremendous basketball
players. And he just he's ahe's a playmaker. He's an impact player,
(16:00):
makes your organization better. I meanhe's a champion. He's a championship
level player. Um, like whatany or what organization doesn't want an individual
he immediately makes your organization better. And uh, it's an incredible playmaker.
Any like any maybe be the bestathlete in the NBA from a day he
steps into the NBA, and I'mI'm talking about like lateral quickness, speed
(16:23):
above the rim, athleticism, strength. I don't I think that he could
potentially be the best all around athleteand a good guy to be able to
do program. I mean, that'sgot to you. You don't they don't
make him like him And that's whereagain it's like you can't be selfish,
you you you know him in triesthim. Um, you know what they've
(16:45):
done for the program, what they'vedone for all of us in their career,
what they've experienced in their own career. I mean you just you know
you listen, you'd love to coachhim again and love to run it back
with them and increases our chances ofwinning it again. But like it's the
world all right, then they're bothin the NBA. Wait, thank you, Thanks go
