Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, coach, first half of the season almost in
the books, wrapping it up with the home and home
series versus Merrimack this upcoming weekend. Just want to get
your thoughts on this upcoming weekend and then overall the
first half of the season.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Yeah, I think it's uh, you know, we certainly have
a tall task on our hands. I believe this, you know,
Friday night against Merrimack, I believe if I'm correct, they're
five and two at home. They have wins over Quinnipiac,
BU I know, New Hampshire Providence. You know, it's a
(00:38):
tough place to play. Lalla Arena. I've been there quite
a bit throughout my life, growing up playing there and
then having coached there for many years. So it's a
great building. I love playing there. I think it's you know,
the fans are right on top of you. The game
happens really fast, and they've been playing pretty well well too.
(01:00):
I think I know that they lost a tough game
at Dartmouth. I actually watched that game one nothing, but
you know, now Landgren's been good in net. Powell's experienced
guy on defense, and you know, Gil and Pierre and
Hoskin have been putting up quite a few points lately.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Awesome, I Joe, you want to start us off?
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Sure, Heykev, how are you?
Speaker 2 (01:25):
I'm good, Joe, how are you?
Speaker 3 (01:26):
I'm good? Thanks, Hope you had a good Thanksgiving?
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Yeah, you too.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Yeah, first half of the year is almost over. When
you when you look back, what is it about your
team that you've really liked, how they've how they've either
gotten better or played, And what's one thing you'd like
to clean up heading towards the second half of the year.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Yeah, I think, uh, that's a good question. I think
one area we have to clean up is defensive zone
face offs. I believe we're giving up two many shots
off our defensive zone face offs. I believe we have
to clean up our odd man rushes against. I think
(02:08):
at times that, uh, you know, we don't. There's times
where our deal pinch and our forwards not covering, and
there's times where there's there's a disconnect sometimes between our
D and r F three. That that's an area that
(02:29):
we've certainly got to manage better. I've been pretty you know.
I think there's a lot of areas, Joe. I think
our penalty killing has been really good at times, and
at times where lack a couple of details and it
winds up in our net. So there's a lot of
(02:50):
different areas. You know, our power play can get better.
We can an area that's been tough for us. I
think the last maybe five games. I don't know if
we're creating enough shifts where we're getting multiple shot shifts
and really having a team in offensively. I don't believe that.
(03:14):
And that's usually a staple of our team when we're
wearing another team down in the offensive zone and one
day it's hard for them to play offense because they
get tired defending, and you know, two, it allows us
to you know, when you're creating those multiple shot shifts,
(03:37):
it's going to lead to more goals. What have you
liked from the first half, Uh, I like our compete.
I like our I like our compete, and I like
our balance. We have, you know, four lines that can score,
(04:00):
so any one of our lines can score. We probably
I like that. I like our competitiveness. I think Tyler
Muslik has been very solid in goal, and I think
overall our defensive corps played pretty solid as well.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Have you been surprised or not? Probably not, because you
recruited him. And how easily the freshmen have assimilated themselves
to college hockey. I mean, they're all the freshmen who
you've played, even Cam who hasn't looked out of place
at all the two games in goal. I mean, the
freshmen have all had some really really great moments and
(04:41):
a lot of solid moments. Yeah, I guess, yeah, a
little bit. You know, they've all contributed. I think probably
the most surprising of the freshmen is Anthony Elaine Samaki
because he's so young for us and for him to
(05:02):
come in, and I think he's really gotten better as
the season's gone on, and he's become acclimated to how
we want to play.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
He's really grasped that he's someone that I think could
be really special someday.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
And what's the health status of Joey and Trey going
into the weekend.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
They both practiced yesterday, but they have not gone through it.
They have not practiced full contact yet, so it's still
both of them are still fifty to fifty. So I'm
not trying to be coy. I'm just until they get
through a practice, I think it's gonna be one of
(05:46):
those things, Joe where we're not going to probably know
it all Thursday night?
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Is it? If they don't play Friday, they won't play Saturday?
Speaker 2 (05:53):
In your opinion? Or not necessarily?
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Okay, not necessarily all right, I see the Florida the
junior senator from Connecticut.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Okay, go ahead, Dan, there's no one else on this call.
I'm guessing that's me.
Speaker 5 (06:12):
Sorry, my voice has decided to take vacation early.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
Just what is Joey dealing with? I don't think we've
asked you that. I know it happened at the end
of the un h game, but.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
It's an upper body Yeah, and I don't think I've
asked about him in a while.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
But is Joe done for the first half? Odie Nick,
what do you mean done?
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Like?
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Is is he still out for the Merrimac series?
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Healthy?
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (06:47):
He has?
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Okay? Yeah? Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
What have you seen from him in practice? Uh? To
uh just since he's been back and uh what he's done?
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Who Joey up? Yeah? Yeah, No, he's a big, big
power forward. He's certainly like I said, he's been back
practicing probably a couple of weeks now. Full up. It's
just you know, right now, it's a situation where we've
got you know, twelve pretty good forwards in front of
(07:20):
him right now, either with Joey Muldowney out. You know,
we've got twelve pretty good forwards in front of him.
But he's knocking right on the door. And he's a
kid that you know, it's not gonna surprise me if
he's in a lineup at some point this season.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
And then back to Anthony, he's been on your power
play for a couple of weekends.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Now, what do you like about him on that unit
and what has he shown you to get that spot?
Speaker 2 (07:51):
Well, uh, you know, Tyler makes a lot of the
decisions on personnel with the power play, and I think
he likes the fact of his mobility and how he
handles the puck. He's made pretty good decisions. He's got
a good shot from the top that he can get down.
Speaker 6 (08:07):
And with Trey Scott out, you know, we've had to
put you know, we'd like to have at least one
defenseman on a power play, and you know, he's kind
of been the guy who's taken that opportunity and ran
with it.
Speaker 5 (08:27):
Has he gotten more comfortable with the puck on his
stick as the season's gone on.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
No, no question, I believe that. But it's not only that.
I've been really impressed, Like he's always been an excellent skater,
but defensively, he's very strong for a young kid. He's
really strong on his skates. And how he's been able
to close plays out and make plays. You know, some
of his breakout passes have not only been does he
(08:55):
make the simple tape to tape outlet pass, but he
can make a pass find a center up the middle.
He's been really good lately making those decisions.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
Then Caden's now tied as one of your leading scorers.
It took him a while to get that second goal,
but now he's put in a few over the last
couple of weeks. Where do you see his game right
now and his progression.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yeah, I think he's playing really well, and I think
it starts with his legs. He skates so well and
that's what creates a lot of his opportunities. He's a
kid that you know, he's getting a little bit more
penalty killed time now because he's skating such a factor.
He's physical. He's really another kid that I think in
(09:47):
the second half you can see him take a big,
big jump.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Can you talk about how Carlin has up during the year.
I mean he's become pretty liable, reliable offensively. Obviously had
the experience in the sea. But what I what have
you liked about how he's gotten better from starting camp
till now.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Yeah, I think he's he's another one who has the
ability to be a great two hundred foot player. He's
pretty good on face offs. Uh, he skates.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
You know.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
The other the other night, his back pressure when we
played stone Hill was why we scored that Why why
he scored that tying goal. He he made an incredible
play back press during the pocket, stealing the pocket that
it went to you know, Blazer, and then he turned
around and went right to the net and Blazer found
(10:44):
him going to the net. But it all started with
his back pressure. So I love when when he's skating. Uh.
He's a really dynamic player for sure.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
And have you noticed the kids refreshed after getting a
little break as we were pretty worn down by the
end of the Stony Old game.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
As you said, yeah, I think so, I think uh,
I think you know, it was a good break for
all of us. Let's just say that.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Yeah, yeah, awesome, Well, thanks coach for jumping on. Good
luck this weekend.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
All right, guys, appreciate it. Have a great week. Thanks Caps.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
Saturday. Thanks
