Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coming off a bye week, started the season one in
one out West at Colorado College home opener, a Top
twenty matchup versus Ohio State. Just want to get your
thoughts heading into this this weekend. One game at Siskana,
one game at People's Bank Arena. Just want to hear
some thoughts.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Yeah, I think it's going to be an exciting weekend
against a very strong opponent. You know, having watched well,
having competed against Ohio State in the past, and having
watched them play this past weekend against Northern Michigan. They're
extremely talented. They're quick, they have size up front. Riley Thompson,
(00:37):
their top line centers a you know, six' four two
and twenty pound kid who's tough to move in front
of the. Net on the power, play the Transfer KURAN
i think played really well last week for. Them burnside's
a good player up, front and then on the back
End sable quarterbacks their power. Play McBrayer is a really
(00:57):
good defenseman And everly's AN us, goaltender so they're strong
in all areas of the. Game they play very fast with,
pace so we're going to have to really manage the puck.
WELL i think this. WEEKEND i think that's going to
be a focal point for, us because when you turn
(01:18):
the puck over against them in bad, areas they're coming
at you pretty. Quick.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
Awesome we'll open it up for.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Questions who wants to leave us? Off we'll go, oldest first. Year,
hey cav how are?
Speaker 2 (01:32):
You i'm? Great, joe how are?
Speaker 3 (01:34):
You i'm? Good thank?
Speaker 2 (01:35):
You?
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Overall what did you like best about the weekend In?
Speaker 2 (01:38):
COLORADO i liked our response On saturday. NIGHT i thought,
that you, know we had a great start To friday night's.
Game we scored on the first shift or second shift
of the. Game sometimes that can be a kiss of
death because you think the rest of the night's going
to go that, way and we learned very quickly that it.
(01:59):
DIDN'T i thought That Tyler muslik was strong both, games and,
uh LIKE i, SAID i think Our WHAT i liked
the most was our contributions from all four lines On
saturday and when we're playing really, well that's what we.
Get we don't rely on one line to carry. Us
(02:22):
we uh thrive off of four, lines just rolling four
lines and trying to wear down our.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
Opponent did you scramble things up On saturday a little
bit From, FRIDAY a.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Little, bit a little, bit we moved a couple of people. Around,
yeah and face. Off i'm, sorry face. Off, Wise carlin
And ethan had terrific. Weekends what is it about their
skills that lend them to be so good in The? Dot,
Well ethan worked on it this summer was a area
that we told him he needed to work. On he
(02:54):
was not as good as he should have been last,
year and to his, credit he did a lot of
work at home this summer on, faceoffs AND i paid
off for him last. Weekend we need him to keep doing.
That And carlin's just naturally since he's got, here he's
been pretty good at the on the.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Dot thank, you.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
All, Right daniel will jump over to.
Speaker 5 (03:18):
You it's a little unusual to play a game and
then have the next weekend. Off so was is there
anything different about practice these past ten days or so
now that you had games in the, bank but you
didn't have anything to work for for a little.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Bit, ah, well we got a lot to work. On
so UNLESS i thought it was really good BECAUSE i
thought it allowed us to kind Of you can do
as much as you want in, preseason but you can
never replicate how hard an opponent's going to play or
the pace of play in a when you're playing a
(03:56):
top Tier division one college hockey. Team AND i think
we got a taste of that when we're out In,
colorado so we as a staff could come back and
watch the film and understand areas where we need. Improvement
AND i think from that, standpoint it was great because
it gave us the ability to have eight practices before
(04:18):
we play again and work on those.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Things so.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
You, know it wasn't designed that. Way we were supposed
to have a game Last friday, night but the game
had to be, moved and you just make the most
of it. Is it is what it, is and, well
hopefully we've improved in those areas and we'll show Against Ohio.
Speaker 5 (04:37):
State have you been up TO i guess it's Now
People's Bank arena to see the changes with.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
IT i. Haven't some of our PLAYERS i know went.
Down but you, know when we built this, ARENA i
thought That i've always thought that this would be a
great way to do a, weekend especially with a team
you're playing twice On friday And saturday night at. Home
you know that that doesn't happen. Often in our, league
(05:03):
just maybe With maine Or, vermont but to be able
to Play friday night on campus and Then saturday afternoon,
DOWNTOWN i think it's going to be. Interesting but from
WHAT i, Hear friday night sold, out and UH i
heard last night that The Lower bowl is pretty close
to sold Out. Saturday don will jump over to, you all,
(05:30):
right and can you hear?
Speaker 6 (05:31):
Me i'm im, MUTE i can hear Your, Yeah, kevin
just kind of off maybe off the wall, question if
you'll indulge. Me but you, know Yesterday Saint joe's announced
they were starting up a program IN d three men's and.
WOMEN'S i know there's been talk on and off about
you heart doing the same. THING i just want to
(05:52):
watch your take on just the growth of college hockey
in this area at the various levels and and you
know how you, feel, uh you, know the kind of
the culture of hockey In connecticut is evolving since over
the years you've been.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Here, YEAH i Heard Jim calhoun's going to coach the. Team.
Speaker 6 (06:10):
YEAH i wouldn't rule it, out you, know but, yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Uh, NO I i think that he was at the press,
conference Wasn't he's someone just about it last. Night, yeah
well he's the right guy to have promoting, it that's for. Sure.
UH i think it's great. DOM i think that there's
more and more hockey players and now that we've opened
(06:37):
up the avenue to The Canadian Hockey league, players there's
gonna be a lot of talent that needs a place to.
Play And DIVISION iii hockey is very very. Good. Uh you,
KNOW i. GO i think the world OF.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Matc.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Greeson he does a great job At. Trinity i've gone
and watched some of his. GAMES i went and watched
The Trinity hobart game last year and it was a
fabulous game and there's a lot of players you know
who'd have trouble playing in that. Game it was a
really really high end. Game AND i think that the
more schools we can get to build, programs the better
(07:18):
it is for the. Sport and you, KNOW i wish.
That the only DOWNSIDE i think For Saint joe's from
WHAT i, hear is they're going to play In. Simsbury
like it's. Better trust, ME i know it's much better
when it's on campus for your students to be able
to walk over and support the. Program so if they
(07:40):
could ever get a rink you know on, campus or
a rink that you heart And Saint joe's could. Share
that would BE i think an ideal. Situation but the
more the more teams you, Know Albertus magnus just started
And Kyle wallas done a really nice job down, there
the more teams that can feel the college hockey, team the.
Speaker 6 (08:01):
Better and those are your roots, also, right you have
roots at that, level.
Speaker 7 (08:06):
RIGHT i.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Do, Yeah and you know it was different WHEN i was,
playing because there weren't a lot Of division one. Options
like you look at many of the teams that Are
division one, today they weren't in nineteen eighty. SIX i
Think Hockey east Had merrimack was in our. League so, Yeah, Union,
merrimack all those schools were Playing division three at the,
(08:30):
time AND i Think Hockey east only had seven teams
and maybe THE ecac would have had THE ivs and maybe.
Twelve so you're talking Nineteen division one teams as opposed
to close to thirty two today in The east in The. East,
Right Thanks.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
keV natalie will jump over to.
Speaker 8 (08:53):
You, Thanks Thanks. Colin good to see you, again. Coach
excited to get.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
That really nice to see.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
You, yeah you.
Speaker 8 (09:00):
Too excited to get this weekend.
Speaker 7 (09:02):
STARTED i guess just to kick things off With Joey
muldowney being selected to a team usay This Angler. Cup
first of, all how excited was he and how well
deserved is this opportunity for?
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Him, well he's super. EXCITED i think anytime you get
to represent, WELL i guess it's technically not your, country
but it's close. Enough but when you get selected for
a team like, that it's very. EXCITING i know his
parents are. EXCITED i think it's going to a beautiful
place In, Davos. Switzerland AND i think he's all. DESERVED i,
(09:39):
MEAN i believe he was second in the country last
year and goals and he picked up where he left
off out Of, colorado having a goal in each each.
Night so he's a great player And i'm really happy for.
Speaker 8 (09:51):
HIM i didn't get a chance to look at the lines.
Yet who do you have him playing with so?
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Far he Finished? Johnson, no, no, NO i don't, YEAH
i don't. Care it's no secret to. Me he finished
With Ryan taddle And Jake rashard Against.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
College.
Speaker 7 (10:11):
Awesome all, right that's a good one to, watch just
from WHAT i was taking a look at regarding your,
ROSTER i feel like with the Other Hockey east teams
That i've covered so far this, year you seem to
have more returners than some of the other teams That i've.
Seen do you feel like that gives you a coaching
advantage early on and do you think that helps with
the messaging to the younger guys.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
TOO i think it allows you to not have to
focus so much on teaching new, systems and it's allowing
you to kind, OF i don't know if perfect is
the right, word but to tinker with different things that
(10:55):
you might want to, do as opposed to if we
had a group of ten new, players you have to
teach them how we do, things and sometimes that takes
a little bit. Longer but when you only really have
maybe two or two defensemen and two forwards that are
having to learn the, system it is it is easier
(11:17):
in the beginning of the year and you can focus
on other, things like maybe spend more time on special
teams than you would normally in a. Preseason so to
answer your, question it is it's a much easier preseason
from a coaching standpoint when you have that much experience coming.
Speaker 7 (11:34):
Back, okay and on the other side of, that with
some of these younger players that you've had, join you,
know what did you think about their? Debut of course
you Had, Blaze, Carlin, Joseph Anthony. DUNFE i, mean what
have you thought about their assimilation to the level.
Speaker 6 (11:49):
And what have you.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
SEEN i thought they all perform really. Well there's gonna
be hiccups and there's gonna be bumps in the, road
but that's true for any fresh in. Class AND i
thought that they handled the pressure of playing on the
road against in a sold out, building against a very
very good. TEAM i think they got into the top
(12:11):
twenty this. Week Colorado college is a very good. Team
so to go all the way out there and play
on the road your first couple of, GAMES i thought
they acclimated themselves really well and gave us great.
Speaker 7 (12:25):
Efforts and last one for, ME i, guess how did
you See fitzgerald come back after you, know missing last.
Speaker 8 (12:31):
Year how does he look to you right?
Speaker 2 (12:33):
NOW i thought he was. Great he added a lot
of jump to our. DEFENSE i thought he had a
very good Game friday night and he followed it Up.
Saturday he's just a very steady defenseman and he might Not,
wow you like a you, Know Cole hudson or a
(12:55):
defenseman like, that or A cale. Mccarr but he is
a very very steady defenseman for.
Speaker 8 (13:02):
Us, Awesome thanks so, much. Coach looking forward To friday.
Speaker 4 (13:08):
Show go, ahead Cav what Does alexander bring to the
table that maybe is either a unique skill set or
somebody with a little bit of experience in the queue
like he.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
Has maybe he has a little bit of an. ADVANTAGE
i don't.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
Know if he has an. ADVANTAGE i think he's just
a really smart hockey. Player he's strong on the. Puck
he protects pucks very well for his. Size he does
a good job of getting his body between the man
and the. Puck and he's a smart hockey. Player he
makes great, plays SO i love his. Compete he scored
a really nice goal on the power play. Shot you,
(13:47):
KNOW i, didn't to be, HONEST i didn't know he
shot the puck like. That SO i want him to
do that more for.
Speaker 4 (13:53):
Sure and since we saw you at, Media Dave viking
has been added to the leadership. Group what is it
about him as a leader that you? Like especially having
one back on the even though you've got experienced guys
Like tommy on the back. Line what is it About
vikings leadership that you?
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Like, well the players selected, him so it had nothing
to do with. ME i put it up to the,
players and he was an overwhelming. FAVORITE i think it's
he conducts himself really well off the. Ice you, know
we're always talking about how you do anything's how you
do everything and goes to, class he gets good, Grades
(14:32):
he comes to practice every day and elevates the compete
level in our, practice AND i think a lot of
the players recognize that he just does things the right
way and he's really coming as a player. Too thank, You, yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Tom go, ahead, Yeah.
Speaker 6 (14:53):
Kevin you know you're in an interesting place with the. Program,
obviously you've got the beautiful new arena on campus still relatively.
New you've got momentum coming off last. Year so where
does The Excel center now fit, in you, know as
far as BEING i, mean it's obviously a way for
you to actually build momentum now to play. There now
(15:15):
people are more people are paying attention To yukon. Hockey
where do where are these These excel games fin Or
People's Bank arena? GAMES i should say fit into the
momentum that you're building for your.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Program, yeah that's an interesting. Question. Uh when we first Built,
tuscano you, know we're all excited and we knew AND
i wanted to play some games down In. HARTFORD i
think that's important for our fan. Base SO i was
(15:49):
not opposed to playing down In. Hartford and someone told,
me and you guys can correct me If i'm, wrong
Because i'm not privy to Villain ova, basketball BUT i
Think villanova used to play a majority of their games
on campus and they would play maybe a handful downtown In.
Philly and what they said was people couldn't get a
(16:11):
ticket on, campus and it's becoming very hard to get
a ticket here on. Campus so when they would play,
downtown it was an opportunity for so many of their
fans to get to watch the team, play and they
would bang out the. Building and that's something That i'm
hoping happens. Here that you, know when we play, downtown
it's an opportunity for a lot of people who have
(16:33):
hard time getting tickets on campus to come watch us.
Play and it sounds LIKE i, said whether it's true or,
NOT i heard that The Lower bowl was almost sold,
out which has never happened In october for a hockey.
Game it's just with the exception of when we opened
up AGAINST bc that first game we've. Had you, know
(16:53):
if we got three thousand for a game during football,
season that was a lot so for us to be
able well the Lower if that is true and we
have five, thousand six thousand people, downtown that's that's gonna
be a pretty good crowd FOR. Uh that's down there
at The People's bank
