Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show. Another week ahead
of us with the Florida International the Panthers coming into
the Rent for a three point thirty kickoff on Saturday,
cancer awareness game. That's a big one. You'll notice a
lot of you know what, the players and coaches will
be wearing to commemorate people in their lives that have
(00:21):
forced to faced the dangers and the real challenge of cancer.
And we'll talk to coach about that in a second here,
but Jim, welcome aboard this one. Three road games, three
one possession games. Every game comes down to the final seconds.
It feels like when Yukon goes on the road, but
(00:42):
the difference is it was a happy ride home after
this one.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
I mean, the objective is to win a game by
any means necessary. We were able to get that done.
You know, I don't think anyone was just completely satisfied
with the way we formed, but a lot to be
learned and you'd rather learn it and a win.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Winning on the road is hard.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Winning in that environment is you know, challenging, and our
guys they were able.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
To respond, so.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
A lot to be learned. Nobody's satisfied, but everyone was
happy with the win. You were on the on the plane.
It was really nice to get on an airplane after
a game with the Yukon football team and here the
players excited.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
Yeah, there's nothing like winning, that's for sure. You can't
substitute for that interesting game. In a lot of ways
that the special teams came into play. I mean on
a number of occasions Buffalo, you know, getting a hand
on a punt and then faking a punt and running
for a first down, and then Yukon going with Chris
(01:46):
Freeman punting the ball later in the game instead of
a field goal attempt. I feel like sometimes you get
in these games and those little, little game little plays
can determine what's going to happen in the final result.
It's kind of unusual to get in a game like that,
isn't it.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
I mean there was some significant special teams plays in
that game. Certainly getting the punt tip it's not something
that's acceptable, the fake punt against us, and really that
was against our defense.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
We were in defense.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Safe, which is really completely and utterly unacceptable and just
cannot happen. You know, those things just they're just they're
inexcusable their breakdowns on our part as a staff, and
we have to do a better job with our players
of making them understand the significance of every play.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
But you know, Chris with a.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Really nice punt off the field goal formation to pin
them down there on the nine yard line, because we
were kind of in that no man's land in terms
of when you go forward it you kick a field goal,
and so that was our best option and he did
a nice job putting it out on the nine and
then certainly you know everybody executing at the end to
get that field goal made to win the game was big.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
You know, so special teams.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
You go on the road, you've got to play good
special teams, and we were pretty average. But when we
needed to make a kick and a punt, we were
able to do it. And I thought that, you know,
we punted the ball okay, but you know when we
needed to hit one, we hit one to pin them
down there.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah, the drive to win the game was pretty exciting.
I imagine on the sideline where you were, it was
nerve wracking. Obviously you had very little time, you know,
fifty nine seconds when you got the ball, fifty three seconds.
I mean, the recap of that was pretty amazing to me.
I mean ten plays run in fifty three seconds to
(03:43):
get in field goal range. I mean, and it took
not only that the fact that you were moving quickly
and getting up to the ball and getting it snapped
all that stuff, but also you had to have great
plays by some people. Right Juice Faren made a great catch.
I mean you needed a lot of club much things
to happen to get that done.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Yeah, we had two really big third down plays, you know,
Juice makes the catch on a nice throw by Joe
when he felt a little pressure, John Nider making the
catch on third down, Joe just having great composure, everyone
having confidence and the composure to get that drive done
on the sidelines. You know, everybody was composed, in control,
(04:25):
understood the situation.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
We were ready to go with a hurry up field
goal if we needed to.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
I thought the five yard game by Sky, the nice
throw on the out to our sidelines is really significant.
Although when you look at the kick that that Chris
put through, it would have been good from price sixty.
But no, we work on that stuff every week, you know,
twice a week we do two minute drills and I'm
not sure many people do that, and so our guys
(04:50):
they understand situational football, and that's really important. You know
that your players. When your players invest in understanding situational
football and you get in that situation in the game,
it helps. I mean, we did the same thing at
Syracuse to get it to overtime. You know, we've we've
done a nice job offensively in two minute situations. Where
we're not doing a good job in two minute situations
(05:13):
is defensively, and we've we've got to get better there.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Yeah, that's letting, not letting the other team. The other
team gets some credit to their drive late to get
a score with a minute to go was could have
been a huge emotional letdown. That's what I was impressed
with him and you Gohn didn't They didn't sag, you
know what I'm saying. I think that's a credit to
coaching staff, players all that didn't sag. The other team
(05:37):
scored with fifty nine seconds left to tie the thing up,
but you were able to bounce back and get three points.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
I think there was just great confidence on our sidelines
with our offensive coaching staff and our offensive players, in
our in our field goal unit, that we were going
to get an opportunity. When you've got a guy like
Joe Fiano and he's throwing to the guys that he's
throwing do and he's got the guys up front of
the protecting. I mean they protected well all day against
the number one pass rush team in the country. There
(06:05):
was just a lot of confidence that we get it done.
We've done it probably we've probably had over one thousand
since since spring. We've probably had over one thousand snaps
of two minute dro in practice, so we know what
to do.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
You know, now, that doesn't mean it's going to happen.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
I mean there's a defense out there putting up a fight,
but in terms of having the confidence of knowing how
to operate in that situation, there was just no hesitation.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Yeah, practice makes perfect in anything, whether you're practicing piano
or playing football. All right, Coach Jimura with us. We'll
back with more on the Yukon football coaches showing a
moment on lear field.
