Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show. We're back with
Jim Mora after a week off, a bye week, and
obviously coach, it wasn't a week off. But how do
you handle the amount of time you have between games
and decide, you know, how much time we're going to
give the guys off, how much time you're going to
do extra study. What's your theory on that whole thing.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
I think it always depends on when the by falls,
which for us was directly in the middle of our season,
which I think is a good thing. And so for us,
it was just getting a really good combination of rest
and recovery for the player players as well as you know,
some lifts in and then three practices and we kept
our practices to about an hour and fifteen minutes, went
without paths, just wore helmets and shells and got a

(00:44):
lot of really good work work in fast, great energy.
But we wanted our players to be able to, you know,
spend time recovering, relaxing. We want to give them a
chance to see family. We wanted to make sure that
they could catch up in any study that they needed
to do and still get working. I thought that they
handled it well, and I really liked the schedule that

(01:05):
we had in place.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Yeah, we're going to talk to Matt Hoffman and Wes
Hole a little bit later on on the show, and
they actually agrieve with what you're saying. It was nice
to have a little bit of time to yourself, but
then you know, get back at it and start to
have extra time to study, which is another thing, and
by week that I don't know, maybe the average fan
doesn't think about you have extra time to look at

(01:27):
your opponent. How do you handle that? Do you overanalyze
or do you find different things to look at when
you have an extra day or two to look at
your opponent coming up?

Speaker 2 (01:37):
I thought you were talking about studies in class, but
we're talking about football like that.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Yeah, there's that too.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Well. As a staff, it gave us a jump on
things in terms of preparation for Boston College. I actually
asked the players not to look at any any BC
stuff until at least Thursday, because I just felt like
they needed to get away from it for a minute.
And I don't want it to get stale, you know,
as you said, you know if you overdo it and
then you overthink things, and as coaches, you know, sometimes
you have a tendency to you know, where they say

(02:05):
work expands the time allotted. So we just really tried
to do a good job of staying with our typical
plan for game planning, you know, and the amount of
plays we put in and what we focus on. But
I try to keep the players just away from ball
really until Thursday and let them focus on school and recovery. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
I like that logic definitely. One thing that Lee Malette
mentioned to us about getting a chance to watch BC
play Clemson live. He liked that because he saw some things,
you know, in action as the game was happening, and
then obviously you're going to study what they're doing before
you get ready to play them. That was something I
didn't think about, right. How many times have football players

(02:48):
get a chance to really watch games live. Yeah, I
know we're playing on Thursdays and Fridays and all that
other stuff, but getting to see your opponent live can
help you, I would think.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
I agree. I think there's so much to be learned
just by not only watching the game but listening to
the announcers. Because you know, when you do these production
meetings and you and I do them there's some insight
that you might glean as a as an announcer that
you know, you reveal during a broadcast. You know who
they're focusing on, who they're trying to get more involved.
You know some of the thought processes that a coach

(03:19):
has and maybe's not going to share with with the
with the radio or print media during the week. You know,
stuff that he only wants revealed during the game, and
so being able to listen to that or analyze how
they handle a two minute situation you in real time,
not not on film where they're cutting out you know,
the stuff that goes on between the plays, but actually

(03:40):
the real time or how they work through tempo, how
they substitute, who's calling the plays, you know, their demeanor
between plays. Seeing things that you don't necessarily see on film,
you get a chance to see, and so I think
that it further prepares you to be ready on game
day when you've had the experience of watching them on
TV live.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Jim Moore with US the ucon Football Coaches Show. I
know you don't look back too much, just keep things
right in front of you, but we do have to
do a little bit of a review on what happened
against BIU the other day. Fifty one points on the board,
you allowed ten. Would you say that was the most
complete game you conplayed in football this year so far?

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Oh, I think undoubtedly. I think, you know, the success
that we had offensively, defensively, and the things we did
on special teams, it was the most complete game we've played.
And yet I will tell you this that I don't
think any of us are satisfied because we still don't
think it was a complete game. You know, it was
the most complete game we've had yet, but it's not
to our standards or the standards that were working towards.

(04:42):
So there's a lot of work left to do there.
But obviously, anytime you can take a step in the
right direction, you want to build on that. You want
to recognize it, you don't want to understand why it happened,
and you want to build on it. And so now
we're in the process of trying to build on it.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
And that came on the heels of winning at Buffalo
the road and a final second of field goal by
Chris Freeman. Do you think that in a way there's
a mental momentum that a team can develop off of
win like that. I felt like the guys during the
week getting ready for FIU had a real sense of
forward momentum as they got ready for the home game

(05:19):
against the Panthers.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Yeah, it is really I totally agree with you, Mike.
So coming off the field after that Buffalo game, I'm
sure there was a lot of people that watched it
that are Yukon fans that were disappointed and thought that
we'd play better. We didn't play very well, but we
found a way to get a win. And sometimes when
you don't play well and you find a way to
get a win, especially on the road against a good opponent,

(05:43):
something grows out of that, you know, A confidence of
self belief, a trust. I don't know. I guess it's
just you know, the experience of being around it. I
felt that kind of growing on our team, and then
we were able to go out last week and play well. Now,
you know, you got to continue to protect that stuff.
You got to keep working at that level and concentrating
at that level that you know helped you find that success,

(06:05):
and that's what our guys are committed to doing.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Yeah, before we go to the break, just a little
thought on doubt versus confidence when you when you're on
the road and you lost those tough ones in Syracuse
and Delaware, you know, maybe a little doubt comes into
your mind as a player, I don't know, But then
you win one close on the road. I think that
kind of like moves you past all that stuff. Finally.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Yeah, I don't know if doubt comes into our mind.
What I had felt a little bit was hesitation at times,
And I don't know if that's the same as doubt
or not. But like to just kind of cut it
loose and trust the work we've done, because the confidence
comes in the work that you do. You know, it's
a preparation, it's a habits, it's the mindset. But you

(06:49):
do the work, you earn the confidence, you know. And
I feel like we just were just a little apprehensive
about just cutting it loose, and we got over that,
and now we got to stay over that. So I
don't know that, you know, you always, I guess people
always ask you, is there a turning point in your season?
And I don't think you'd really think about that till

(07:10):
the end of the season. But as we look back,
if we see where we go, that could be one
of them.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
We'll see, Yeah, all right, Jim Morrow, whether us the
Yukon Football Coaches Show continues. We're going to talk about
the offensive line work Wes Hole in the middle of that.
We'll interview him as well, and Matt Hoffman on the
defensive line what they're doing to get in the backfield
and harass opposing quarterbacks. And we'll get a little thumbnail
sketch of what Boston College is about when we return

(07:35):
on The Yukon Football Coaches Show.
