Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show, Week two of
the Husky season with Syracuse on the Horizon on Saturday
at twelve noon on Mike Christino joined by Jim Mora.
The Huskies want to zero. That's what you want to
be after your first week, and let's start their coach,
The first couple of minutes were a little jarring. You
(00:20):
got punched in the nose a little bit with the
punt snap that ended up on your five yard line,
and I can't think it stunned the stadium a little bit,
but the team seemed to bounce back pretty well after that.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah, you know, Mike, our first twenty two plays, if
you combine offense, defense, and special teams, were not exactly
what we were looking for. We had four penalties, we
had a touchdown callback, we had a long or a
long kickoff return come back. You mentioned the snap, So
it didn't feel real good, especially as much emphasis as
we put on starting fast. But on the flip side,
(00:57):
nobody panicked, you know, and so there's something to be
learned from that, and we were able to just stay calm,
keep our composure, refocus, and then start to make some plays.
But that's certainly something that we cannot make a habit
and will not make a habit. A poor start like
that that can be devastating in a big game.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Well, obviously if you're playing somebody like this week on
the road and you have a bad start, that could
put you in a big hole.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
The running game didn't get started early.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
It looked as if everyone was trying to kind of
work together and get some cohesion going on that offensive line,
some new faces there. But as the game progressed, it
looked like you were getting holes opened, looks like your
runners were getting into that second level, and obviously you
broke a couple big ones.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
What's interesting is that snap over the head of our
punter costs US forty two yards in rushing.
Speaker 4 (01:49):
I don't figure that.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
So we ran for three hundred yards, so we felt
good about that. I think we all kind of expected
to come out and maybe just be a little bit
more effective early, like you mentioned, but sometimes when you're
you're committing to the run and they know so, then
they're going to commit guys to stopping the run, and
it's just you know, sticking with it, doing your job
play after play and then counting on you know, one
(02:12):
of those ones that goes for three, all of a
sudden it goes for five, and it goes for seven,
then it breaks for seventy three. And that's kind of
how successful running teams are. And we've been able to
run the ball around here and we expect to be
able to continue to run the ball.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Yeah, it's interesting that you really had you know, Cam
Edwards carried the ball six times. I'd love to see
you get them six carries in one hundred and fifteen
yards every week, so where and tear won't become a
factor of twelve games in. But you know, you got
a lot done without having to wear guys out in
(02:46):
that first week.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
I thought, well, we've got a lot of guys on
offense certainly that we can put in the game and
have a lot of confidence that they're going to play at.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
A high level.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
You know, you talk about the running back room in particular,
You've got Cam and obviously you know Mel is such
a great player, and then and then Victor who scored
ten touchdowns a couple of years ago.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
And then you saw Oliver and MJ come in there,
and you know.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
So we feel like we're five or six deep at
running back and same thing at receivers. You know, there's
a lot of guys can go out there and make
plays for us tight end the same thing.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
And so I think to your point is.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Being able to keep guys fresh, put rotate players through
and not having a drop off in production is always
going to help you as a football team and keep
guys you know, fresh and on point. And you know,
if you can put a Cam Edwards in the game
late when you've beat a team down a little bit,
he's going to break some runs for you that can
(03:41):
put a game away.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Got Jim Morris with us the Yukon Football Coaches Show,
Mike Chris Bino. We get together on Tuesday six pm
on the Yukon Sports Network. And speaking of that depth
the receiver corps, you got Jackson Harper will make five catches,
Skyler Bell obviously four big ones including the eighty two yarder,
and then Ramelo Murphy some new faces, Ty Bowman seven
(04:07):
catches between them. I just feel like when you have
that kind of talent that you can send out there,
you know, for sixty minutes. If I'm a defensive guy,
I'm thinking, man, these guys keep coming at us with
you know, in rows, and it can be a little
discouraging I think for the other defense.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
If you can keep this kind of thing going.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Yeah, that's a big if, and we have to we
have to keep it going. And it's a little bit
more comforting to the play caller Gordy that he doesn't
have to necessarily have specific guys in in order to
get the right play called, you know, and you didn't
even mention guys like Chris Parker, John Knyder and and
Shamar Porter. So with any of those guys in the game,
(04:49):
we feel confident that they can go out and make
plays for us. Now there's going to be different levels,
and there's going to be things that guys do a
little bit better than others, or maybe they have a
deficiency one thing, and so our job as coaches had
always put them in position them to do what they
do best so they can maximize their potential. But it
certainly is nice to have some depth at the skill positions.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Well, the team bounced back after the giving up that touchdown,
and they opening two minutes with twenty eight straight points
and then comes the final few minutes of the first half,
and I mentioned this on.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
The air to Wayne Norman. My partner.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
I said, hey, coach and the staff, they've been working
on this two minute thing every single day all summer long,
all spring, all spring.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
I want to see what happens here, because you got
a big lead twenty eight ten.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Yeah, you could have coasted into the locker room with
that eighteen point advantage, but you took it down the
field and I think it was seventy yards in just
a couple of minutes and scored again to make it
thirty five to ten. At the break, it was seven
plays fifty two yards, And I thought that was kind
of significant, even in a game that was kind of
(05:57):
a blowout, a.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Blow yet, And I think that for us to be
able to get the practice in a game that we've
been you know, some of the situations we've been practicing
in practice, was really important, Mike, you know. So it
was important for us to do all we could on
defense to get the ball back for our offense so that.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
We could try to execute a.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Two minute drive, you know, in a game where where
it really counted, and we were able to do that.
We gave them the ball back I think with less
than thirty seconds left again at the end of the
at the end of the half, so we accomplished our objective,
which was the score and not leave much time on
the clock for our offense.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
So you know, really there was four series four changes.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
That were our offense was on the ball twice and
our defense is on the field twice, and our defenses
on the field twice in the last minute and twenty
eight seconds, and we were able to get points up,
get a stop on defense and then they kneeled on it, so.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
That that was effective for us.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
But like you said, getting the chance to put it
into action all the things we've been working on was
really important for us.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Yeah, and you got it done in fifty four seconds.
That drive by the way thirty five ten at halftime
in the final fifty nine thirteen, we.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Take a quick break. We're back. This is the Yukon
Football Coaches Show on Lear Field.
