Speaker 1 (00:00):
Walk on board. It's the Yukon Football Coaches Show. We
get together with Jim Mora each and every week we
recap what happened on the weekend. We look ahead to
the upcoming tilt with FAU. Florida Atlantic University's Owls will
be hosting the Huskies this Saturday, three point thirty kick
down in Boca Ratone. Coach, another good win for the Huskies.
(00:22):
Eight and three. Now you've won nineteen of your last
twenty six and we don't look back much on this show,
but got to say the Yukon Nation, Husky Nation, is
starting to really pay attention to what's going on on
the football and on the gridiron side of things for
Yukon with the kind of success you're having. And first
(00:44):
of all, congrats on that. And we're going to talk
about this air Force game, because even though I was
en route to Boston to do the basketball game, I
was listening the whole way. And let's go to the
first half. First, it sounded like air Force was commanding
the game. I was starting to worry.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Well, I understand that worry. I was a little worried too,
But you know, they run the style of offense where
they just play keep away. You know, they came out,
we got them three and out. We went down and scored,
and we struggled there a little bit with getting the
extra point made, and then they just took the ball
(01:22):
and they just decided, Hey, we're gonna we're gonna be
who we are. We're gonna take our time, we're gonna
have multiple shifts in motions, we're gonna get ourselves in
the best play, and we're gonna just try to grind
this thing out. And they did, and they went down
the field, took a ton of time off the clock,
and scored, went up seven to six. Put a couple
other drives together, but our guys were able to rise
up on fourth down and get stops, and those are
(01:44):
just key stops for us. And when you're playing offense
like that, you're gonna have to hang in there a
little bit and play a little rope adope at times,
you know, and and then you're you know, set yourself
up to the land and knockout blow, which we were
able to do. But I was just really proud of
our team and first half, our defense for hanging in
there the way they did and getting the stops when
(02:04):
we needed to and then I thought, you know, our
offense going down there at the end of the first
half and getting us a nine to seven lead was huge.
We went into the locker room knowing that we were
going to get the ball to start the second half
and we needed to establish, you know, that we could
run the football, and we came out and broke a
good one on the first play the second half with Cam,
(02:25):
And as you know, Cam had a great second half,
which means our offensive line and our receivers and our
tight ends blocking had an outstanding second half and we
were able to get it done. But it was little
hairy at the start.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Yeah, that's for sure. And when games end up being
you know, a ten point differential and you look back
and just say, well you can handle them. But at
a given point in a game, sometimes one play can
be a turning point, is my thought. Because on that
fourth down play for air Force, they had two yards
(02:56):
to get, Yukon's d comes up big, their quarterback gets hurt.
All of a sudden, the picture just totally changed, I thought,
because I mean air Force goes in and scores there,
they're up a score and and they're still in command
and they're they're getting towards the end of the first half,
so that one stop, to me, might have been one
(03:17):
of the biggest plays we've seen all season.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
It was a big play for sure, Mike. You know,
the ebb and flow of a game, the momentum swings,
the ups and the downs are really remarkable. You know,
what it demands of me is that I try to
stay a series or two ahead. Am I thinking? You know,
what does a field goal versus a touchdown mean at
this point? And what does it mean a drive down?
A drive down the game? Two drives down the game,
(03:42):
which I love the strategical part of it, but I just,
like I said, you know, our defense being able to
make those stops and in particular that stop, and then
certainly you never want to see an opponent get injured,
you know. I mean, you know, suffer a little pain,
that's part of the game, but you know, getting injured,
that's not what we're looking for. But you know, you
(04:02):
can't deny that him not being on the field in
the second half didn't help us. It did help us.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Air force on that drive. By the way, Coach, nineteen plays,
I mean, how many times you see a nineteen play
drive they went ninety yards. They had the ball for
almost twelve minutes. And we talk about time of possession sometimes,
but in this game, you have to talk about it.
Air Force had the ball the entire first half, it
felt like, yet they don't get in the end zone.
(04:31):
Yukon comes back, gets a field goal and gets in
that locker room with the lead. How important was that?
Do you think? Huge?
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Especially because we had the ball to start the second half.
You know, our original thought was we were going to
take the ball to start the game to keep it
out of their hands so that you know, we didn't
sit there and get cold on the bench. But we
ended up kicking off and fortunately got the three and
out and was able to go get the points. And
then once that happened, like my mindset shifted to okay,
(05:00):
worked out, well, we get to start the second half
with the ball. Let's see if we can double them up,
which means can we find a way to get the
ball to end the first half and start the second half.
And now they got the ball with I think thirty
four seconds left at the end of the first half
of condenting with it, so we were able to capitalize
with points on two consecutive drives, one at the end
of the first half and when to start the second half,
(05:21):
and so those are important moments in the game.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Yeah, we talked about special teams. Chris Freeman with a
forty seven yard or that's not a ship shot, okay,
twenty eight seconds left and the half that's a big
field goal. And when you're getting kicks like that, boy,
that really provides a lift, doesn't it.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Yeah. Chris is a good one. You know, he's very dependable,
he works hard at it, as players respect him. You know,
I just think he's a great person. I'm really happy
to see him have the success on an individual basis
and that leads to our team success and that's what
it's all about. So really great to have a guy
that you know you can put out there and you
(05:59):
have a high degree of confidence that he's going to
make the kick for you. And you know, it's not
just Chris, but it's the operation between the snapper, the
holder and the kicker and then the protection up front
and you know, knock on wood and we'll keep doing
it well. And it's been something that we work hard
at and we'll continue to work hard at.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Yep. Chris Freeman's got a game winner at Buffalo and
he had a big kick against Air Force on Saturday.
Back with more, we're going to talk defense, then offense,
and we talked to yukon football with Jim Moore here
on Learfield.
