Speaker 1 (00:00):
Would you believe it's time for hockey? Yes, it is.
Welcome to the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. We are live
at fair Smoke House Barbecue. Bob Joyce, Adam Jardino and
Coach cav back for year thirteen. Lucky Year thirteen.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Right, that's right, that's read team.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
As we get set for a new season of Yukon Hockey,
it starts on Friday night at Colorado College Weekend series
both Friday and Saturday nights. First of all, welcome to
a new season. Are you guys chopping at the bit?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
I think we're ready. We've been practicing since the Tuesday
after Labor Day, and you've had a month of practices
and you haven't been able to play against an opponent.
I think the guys get a little bit itchy, So
I think we're ready to take on a you know,
Colorado College on Friday, for sure. I think our guys

(00:52):
are just they're tired of hitting each other. They want
to go hit somebody else.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
I believe we talked about this some last year, this
meeting out of Colorado College, said you wanted guys to
get used to the idea of getting on a plane
and going to play somewhere, just emulating what could be
to come in the NCAA tournament. How did this particular
matchup come to be?

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Well before COVID, we were trying to do a Western
trip every year and tried to line it up so
that right now, we're going to Colorado College this year,
they'll come to us next year. Ohio State's coming to
us this year, We'll go to them next So every
year we're trying to play a Western you know, two
Western opponents and one on the road and one at home.

(01:34):
And obviously Tyler Helton's from Colorado Springs and he had
some connections to some of those people and it just
worked out that they were free and we were and
we were able to put it together. But I think
it's a great quality opponent. That league is outstanding. You know,
you've had a lot of national champions from that league
as of recent So it'll be a great test for us.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Yeah, coming off of record twenty three wins last season
Hockey East Final for the second time, first NCAA tournament,
great home record, winning record on the road too. I mean,
a lot to look back at and really be proud
of what this team accomplished for last year, and I
don't know the way it ended, suddenly great goal.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
How long would it take you to get over it?

Speaker 1 (02:20):
I mean, my lasting impression of you on TV that night,
You're just swigging a bottle of water.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
It's like, uh, you know who? And you been doing
it this long. I don't know if you ever truly
get over the losses. You just kind of move on
and you move on to your next challenge. And last
season's over. And it was a great season and probably
the best in Yukon history.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
However, that has no it's not an indicator of what's
going to come this season. And I've tried to explain
to a lot of the players that if you guys
remember a few years ago, Merrimack was coming off one
of their first trips to the NCAA. I think they
had been before, but not many times, and they hadn't
been in a long time. And they had both their

(03:04):
goalies back and a lot of scorers back and top
defenseman back, and they're picked third in the league, just
like we were, and they finished tenth. You know, in
that year, we were picked fifth in the league, and
a lot of people were high on our team, and
we finished eighth, So where your preseason rankings are and
we've been on the other side of it too, where
you pick ninth or tenth and you finish a lot higher.

(03:26):
So where your preseason rankings are really is never an
indicator for how the next season's going to be or
how this season's going to be.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
So no matter what you have coming back.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
It doesn't really matter because you just don't know. There's
so many things that can happen during a season. Now,
you know, we only have twenty five players. Now, we
had two forwards get hurt a couple of weeks ago
and we didn't have them for three days. You only
have twelve forwards in practice, so you have to you're
limited on what you can do. And I know no

(04:00):
speaking with Gino, he went through something a couple of
years ago where you know, when you only have seven
or eight players for practice, you really have to get
creative with your players because you can't burn them out.
You don't want to injure them. So normal practices that
you would normally have during the year, you have to
tone some of those down and find different drills where

(04:20):
your players can get the proper conditioning they need, the
proper reps under game like pressure, but also you have
to be cognizant of the fact that you only have
twelve forwards out there and we can't wear them into
the ground.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
You're someone who has been really open about talking to
their team about goals and what you want to accomplish
over the course of the year, and two goals, making
the NCAA Tournament, winning a game in the NCAA Tournament
you checked off the list for the first time in
program history. So coming into this year, how do you
approach goals and want guys in the locker room talking

(04:58):
about some goals.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Our goals are the same. Our goal was to win
a national title last year, and that's the same goal
that we have every year. And it's something that I've
never been afraid to talk about. I don't think I
don't think it's healthy for a team to be clandestine
or furtive with your goals. You know, we don't want
to let anyone else know or in case, you know,

(05:23):
we don't get there, because then we'll feel like it
was a failed season. I don't believe in that. Our
goal is to win a national title. Our goal is
to win a Hockey East Championship. Our goal is to
be Colorado College on Friday night. Those are our goals
and like those don't change. So it's something that our
kids are accustomed to, and I think the more you

(05:44):
talk about them, the healthier it is.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
Right, we will get into the twenty five twenty six
Uskys when we come back, a lot of familiar names,
some new names as well, and some changes as Mike mentioned,
not only the roster change, but where some of these
players are coming from. As we're live at Bear Smokehouse Barbecue,
our first Jucon Hockey Coaches Show of the year, and
you're hearing it on Learfield.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
