Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we're live in bear smokeout with barbecue and arn'tbook
for another edition of The Hockey Coaches Show with coach
cav Adam Gardino at my side as well, can you
even coach? Good nice weekend for your for your ice
bus against those other Huskies, as they liked to refer
to yukon.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Good evening, Bob, It was a good weekend for us.
It was, you know, it was an interesting weekend because
I thought we played much better on Saturday than we
did on Friday. I thought Friday we were a little
reckless at times with our play, and you know, gave
up a lot more, I think, on on Friday night

(00:37):
than we did on Saturday, and we found ourselves down
three nothing, but showed a lot of resilience, came back,
tied the game and Joe we get the big goal
on overtime. So it was it was a good sweep,
five out of six points from Northeastern. We have them
again later in the year, so it'll be uh, you know,

(00:58):
it's it was good to I was telling the kids,
it's a nine point when you're playing team three times,
you're playing for you know, nine points. So we've won
the series. But it would be nice to also get
eight points at some point against that team. Yeh.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Couple of goals in quick succession in the second period
eleven seconds apart on Friday, even Guardula and then Jake Percival.
From the coaches perspective, after a goal, when the puck
is dropped in play is starting again, are you still
talking to the previous line And when a goal is
scored eleven seconds later, were you already back looking at
the play or were you still kind of no assessing

(01:36):
what it scored.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
No, we don't. One of the things we focus on,
we call those swing shifts, and whether you get scored
on or whether you score, I don't even focus on
the group that scored. It's all about the next group
that's going out. And not only did we score eleven
seconds after the first goal, we scored on the next

(01:57):
shift after they tied it. So yeah, there was two
swing shift goals. I thought that were really integral in
us being successful that night.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Right, they scored, and then twenty six seconds later was
when Jake personally had his second goal.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yeah, and that was you know, looking over at their
bench after Jake scored that goal, it was crushing for them.
Because they had come all the way back they tied it,
you know, And the same thing almost happened to us
on Saturday. After we tied it. It was about three
and a half minutes left and they had an unbelievable
chance and Tyler made an incredible save. That was probably

(02:33):
the only real good chance the rest of the way.
But it was really good chance, and that would have
been backbreaking if they scored that. Mike.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
How similar was that Saturday night as opposed to the
previous Saturday night where it came back from two goals
down at Providence to at least get the extra point
and win in the shootout.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
I don't think it was very similar at all. I
thought at Providence they were playing pretty well. We had
a big third period against Providence. Against Northeast, I honestly
was never panicked. I felt we were playing great the
whole game. We had a unfortunate turnover for one of
their goals. They got a bang bang play that it

(03:11):
was a little bit lucky. Muslik made a great save
and directed it right to the corner and it happened
to go on the kids stick and he shot it
and there was about an echine net that he was
able to get it in. And then the other first goal,
Tyler lost his stick and they shot it down. The
puck was going wide, it hit his stick and went

(03:31):
five hole on him, redirected five hole. So they had
some kind of like fluky goals. So it wasn't that
we were giving up oddman rush after oddman rush because
the night before I didn't like the way we were
playing because one of the things, you know, we like
to be aggressive, we'd like to pinch our defenseman at times,

(03:53):
but we've also got to ascertain when F three is
in a position that we can pinch. And we did
not have great communication between our F three and R
D and we were giving up oddman rushes that we
should not have given up on Friday night.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
And so on Saturday, you're saying you didn't mind how
the team was playing, but you're still down three nothing
as a group. So yeah, did you see the players
also feel calm or whatever the emotion would be that
you wanted to see to think, okay, yep, down three nothing,
but they also believe that they're playing okay.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
No question. Yeah, And you know, I think the vibe
that the coaching staff was given giving the players was
just keep doing what we're doing. We'll get back in
this game. And when you have a leader like Tabor,
he slip. You know, he leads with rectitude. He would
never ask anybody to do anything that he wouldn't do himself.
So that also helps. When you have a leader like that,

(04:54):
it's a lot easier to coach Mike.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
When Jake Percival scores, they usually come in bunches. He
had gone twenty seven without a goal. He gets a
hat trick Friday night, including an empty night or to win,
to steal a four to two win, and then he
gets a goal on Saturday. It's either feast or famine
with him. You hope this trend continues for a few
weeks though. Yeah, he's playing some good hockey.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
One of the things that you know he did, you
know Ethan Gardula's goal on Friday night actually his goal
on Saturday night as well. You're playing a goaltender like
Lawton Zacher who's been in the zone. His safe percentage
was off the charts. Yeah, you know, you have to

(05:36):
You cannot be deficient in your net presence against a
player like that, a goaltender like that, And one of
the things Jake did. I thought, really well, was he
got right to the front of the net and deflected
that goal? The uh was it the second one he
scored that night? Yeah, And then his goal on Saturday

(05:58):
he was right there, right on the on the goal post,
right in front of the net. So we made a
point of emphasis with our team that we need deflections,
we need screens, we need rebounds when a guy's seeing
the puck, and he didn't really let in. Nobody beat
him clean. All weekend. It was all deflections, rebounds, backdoor plays,
and I was very happy with our NetFront play on

(06:21):
the weekend.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Right all right, Coming up later, visit with Kayden Shahan
and Joey Muldowney, the young man who scored the game
winner on Saturday night, one of many he escored as
he leads a team with six. We'll come back with
Coach cav talk more about the Northeastern series and the
state of the Huskies when we continue on the Yukon
Hockey Coaches Show here on Learfield. In just a minute,
