Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're back with Jim Mora. The Yukon Huskies now eight
and three on the season, wrapping up a six to
oh slate at home, first time Huskies have been undefeated
at home since twenty ten. That's fifteen years. I had
one other undefeated home slate that was in two thousand
and seven. Huskies at that point, we're riding high, struggled
(00:21):
for several years, Jim Moore on the scene and the
Huskies back at it at eight and three. Coach, We've
been talking offense all year because this offense with Joe
Finnano and Cam Edwards and Skyler Bell all vying for
awards as the season progresses here, and we'll get to
that in the second. But your defense has come up
with some big plays. Last play against Duke won the game.
(00:44):
Brian Palm all year has been fabulous, the linebacker Umar Diamonde.
These guys have over one hundred tackles each.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
In a season.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
I know that you're a defensive guy, and as you
look at that, you're the head coach. Obviously got to
be appreciating what those two guys are doing.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
I am, and the people around them that support them,
you know, and the guys up front that take up
blocks so they can make plays. But those two guys,
you know, they're fifth and eighth in the country and tackles,
so there's their impact that's been significant. You know, Brian
is one of the believe he's thirred in the country
in sacks and eighth and tackles for loss, So.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
You know, those are big plays.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
And you have to have dependable guys in the middle
that are equally adept at defending the run, in the pass,
that are leadership guys that are tough, guys that are
violent that tackle well, those guys do it. You know,
our defense and as a whole, you know, Yeah, there's
been some real challenges. We had a ton of a
ton of changes in the offseason, but just impressive the
(01:45):
way they've come together, their commitment to getting better, which
been has been on display since we started, really since
we started in January. It's nice to just see the
payoff for the hard work and the commitment these young
men have made.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Yeah, Malachi mc McLain the dB and Cam Chadwick also
been impressive. Malachi seventy three tackles. He had some injury
things set them back a little early in the year.
But he looks to be back in.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Full full swing.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
And Cam Chadwick got beat up a little bit on Saturday,
but he's got four interceptions, three breakups. Having DB's that
can come up and be sure tacklers. How important is
that to what defense is? Overall success?
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Big?
Speaker 2 (02:28):
It's actually important to the team. One thing that we
say here is that the toughness of your team can
be identified by the way your wide receivers block and
your corners tackle. And our wide receivers are tremendous blockers,
and our corners will you know, they'll they'll put their
face in the fan, they will go tackle.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
And those guys who were banged up a little bit
on the weekend. I know you had your press conference Tuesday.
Any updates. Do you feel good about everybody being available
for the weekend or do you have to wait and
see as your practice this week?
Speaker 3 (03:02):
No, I think we're in really good shape physically.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
I think everyone would be back and we'll be ready
to roll.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
I was looking at the rush stats.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Jim Yukon this year has run for almost two thousand
yards three hundred and forty four times five point one.
Again a run the opposition is run for more yard
is but they've also run one hundred and fifteen more
times than your team has.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
You've held the opposition.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
To four point four on the grounds as numbers go,
how does that fit? Is that a pretty good number
for a defense to hold an offensive running a game
to four and a half a carry.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
It's okay, it's not up to our standard. You know.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
One of the things that's affected that is that we've
given up some big plays on defense, and so that
you know, has a tremendous impact.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
On your yards per carry.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
But you know, no, we're not good enough there yet,
and well we're not good enough anywhere yet. That's if
you start thinking you're good enough in anything, then.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
You start going and reverse.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
So it's just a constant quest for us every day,
whether it's run defense, runoffense, past defense, pass offense, special teams,
it's just like we're never there, there's no finish line.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
We're just gonna keep going.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
And you've got to do that all the time with
your team.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
You gotta psychologically, you got to build.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Them to feel that way and think that way. Tell
me about that. Is that something you've got to do
every day when you walk into practice and for you
I'm talking about verbally expressed to the team, or is
it something you see on the practice field that tells you,
wait a minute, we're getting sloppy.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
We're getting lazy, we're doing this, we're doing that. Whatever.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
How do you view that when when you do sense
it when you're on the practice field that the team
might be sliding a little bit in their prep.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Not often, and when I do, I address it, and
I call it being demanding encouraging. So yeah, I'm gonna
be very very demanding, but try to do it in
an encouraging way. You know, point out that you know
you're better than that, that's not your best. We need
(05:14):
more from you. You're capable of more. That wasn't up
to our standard. Live our standard, you know, said with
different voice inflections all the time and different levels of volume.
But I'm grateful that I get to coach a team
of young men that is driven, and so I don't
(05:39):
have to say I don't have to remind them a lot.
Now I do because I think the consistency of the
message is really important.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
They need to keep hearing it, they need.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
To have somebody that reinforces it all the time, and
that's my job. But I'm lucky to have a bunch
of guys that that take the message and then they
put it into action.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
To that point, We're gonna talk to ar Diamonde in
a few minutes on the show and he mentions playing
for Matt Brock like he's the same every day, and
we know Brock.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
You know Matt Brock. I mean that guy.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
I mean, if I had the ability to put the
pads on and go out there, I'd run through a
wall for that guy. But he's his his you know,
his guy's on his unit. To a man say the
same thing, and that's got to be one of the
great assets for you as a head.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Coach without a doubt, and coach Samus is the same
way that we all know who they're going to be
every single day. They don't deviate from their their beliefs,
from the standards that they set.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
They just refuse to deviate.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
They keep the message tight, they keep it in alignment
with what we want to be as a football program.
You know you're not going to sneak one by him.
You know they're not going to criticize you if if
if it's not uh a situation where it's warranted and Uh.
Players like consistency, Coaches like consistency. Players want to be
(07:04):
held to a high standard. Coaches want to live a
high standard. So it's just a nice mix that we've got.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
