Speaker 1 (00:00):
Is stimied at the rim by Trey Carroll, and here
comes Carroll down the court right to left, John overpowered
memory stolen by Mullins. Mullen's on a runout on an
alleyf to Paul, and Paul crushes the rim. Oah baby
hell was sweet Braylan Mullens showing his passing acumen. Ukn
leads fourteen to four. As Rodny Anderson tried to get
(00:22):
to the rim, j Emory back the other way. Off
the rebound, he goes right to the basket. He gives
to Caravat and lays it in and Caravan's fouled. Paul
Alex Caravan off to a great start and Ukhon running
the break seeing something in the Xavior defense because they
are countering Wayne at a blistering pace ball. They're working
(00:42):
backwards's Mullins for three back rim no good rebound it
by Stewart. Stewart attacks, he gives the raid and rain
rocks the rim. Got a feed by Jaylen Stewart. His
passing ability wing this year has improved dramatically, I think
against Malik, Messina, Moore, Bike, Alen Stewart and Yukon has
a front court right Here's mullins between the rings. The
(01:05):
little yo yo dribble fires right to Mala Chai Smith
downloaded Reid. We're trying to carp some space out and
he lays it in on a reverse. Nice play as
he worked over Popenji, the sophomore forward who transferred from
UNLV thirty to six Yukon Bob.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Joyce back with Dan Hurley on the Men's Basketball Coaches Show.
Mike's having some Wi Fi issues as we record this
on Friday, So Dan is with us. The menor home
to Marquette on Sunday one thirty pre game here on
the Yukon Sports Network. Dan, I was driving home from
Providence on Wednesday, and, like the women, your team got
(01:42):
off to a fabulous start at Xavier, which is not
an easy place to play, but you guys made it
look pretty easy in those first ten or twelve minutes
when he led what thirty to seven.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
It's not like our game.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Yeah, you know what I I they helped Bob. I
think it's you know, that game of Kansas early in
the year. You know, I think when you uh, you know,
when you go on the road, uh, you know, early
in the year and you go play you know, in
the hardest place to play in in all of college
basketball for us, you know, I think it just prepares
(02:16):
you for you know, any any road environment and Xavier,
you know, certainly and as far as Big E schools go,
there's been a place for us that's been hard to
win at and a place that's really tough o opponents.
I think they got real smart, knowledgeable basketball people and
uh and then they got a student section that has
(02:39):
got the location which is perfect, which is right right
by our bench. I think our biggest issue was the
swim team during the game. I think was probably you know,
the there the sight of them was probably the toughest
thing we probably had to deal with because we played
uh uh, you got off to a fast start and
kind of quite of the building right now.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Was it defense starting offense? Was it that? Or was
it just playing that well on both ends of the floor.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
I thought, Brailan, I thought we had a you know,
a really good start. I thought, you know, we had
guys that you know that we need to play, you know,
both ends of the court. We need guys you know,
like Braylan like solo making plays defensively, you know, making shots.
You know. So it was like good execution. It was
guys making plays off script. It was it was good execution.
(03:31):
It was being dialed into scouting report. Uh. You know,
I thought Luke did a great job of giving those
guys a you know, great game plan, and I thought
we you know, really rebounded the ball. I think, you know,
we did a lot of things well and and really
set a tone and knocked them on their.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Heels forty two rebounds. Heck, you had twenty six assists. Now,
I don't know if that's a season high, but you know,
the team that I cover, I mean twenty assists per
games the norm for them.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Has the ball movement gotten better?
Speaker 2 (04:02):
I know turnovers has been an issue as of late,
but it just I mean, you get twenty six assists,
you're doing a lot of things well on the floor offensively.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
Yeah. I mean that's a neighborhood that we've you know,
when we're at our best and you're a top team
and you're championship level team, you know, your your twenty
plus every night, and you know, for us, uh, that's
where we should be. You know, we we've got the
potential to have a great dominant inside game. I think
(04:30):
that we've got some guys, some flamethrowers from the perimeter
with Solo and Alex and Braylan and UH and some
scoring punch off the bench with Jalen Stewart and Jayden Ross.
We've got a couple of really, really good point guards,
and we've got all the ingredients to be a top
a top offensive team. But we've got to We've got
to get better in transition, just getting more opportunities running
(04:53):
and UH and and the turnovers have been a problem.
And you know, I've been all over these guys. They
got to take better care of the ball, not be
as careless with it.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Mike is back. We'll get him in a couple of minutes.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Here, I want to ask you about Alex and what
he has done here leadership wise.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
He's the captain. Now that you guys are back.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Fully healthy for the most part and integrated, how has
he been able to keep things together and keep you
guys in the right frame of mind.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
Well, I mean he thinks like a coach, Bob. He's
got the mentality and like the understanding of the game.
Just what we're doing on offense, just our rules of
engagement on defense are just the technical aspects of what
we're trying to do on offense with our system, the
(05:43):
different things we're running. He knows it as well as
a coach, and he's able to kind of communicate a
lot of things to guys on the court while they're happening.
Things they need to do. Get under a screen, get
over a screen, switch a screen, send it to the
baseline side, trap the post, and at the offensive end.
And he's able to be a problem problem identifier and
solver her there as well, just communicating spots that players
(06:07):
need to be in while producing, you know, at a
real high level. You know, it's a it's a deep
team and it's a balanced team. So his numbers aren't,
you know, aren't going to stand out. But he's played,
Uh you know, he's on a top five team in
the country. Uh, that's had probably the biggest wins in
college basketball this year in terms of the totality what
(06:30):
we did in a non conference. You know, he's he's
played at an All American level and should be a
candidate for player to hear in the league.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
All right, well, take a break, Mike is back. Will
let him take over the show again in just a minute.
This is the Yukon men's basketball coaches show on Learfield
