Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back with Dan tomorrow night.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
The men back can actually take on East Texas A
and m at Gamble. Mike is actually back tomorrow night
with Wayne six point thirty on the Yukon Sports Network,
the Varsity Network App, and the Varsity Network dot Com.
Sandierra had ten point six assists in the win on
Wednesday against Lamoinnes and, as I mentioned the pregame show
that night too, some of the defensive work that he

(00:23):
did against New Hampshire to help kind of get things
going offensively for your team in the second half. It
just seems right now he seems to be that good
fit coming off the bench for your team. Now that
doesn't mean he's going to be on the bench as
a non starter for the rest of the year, but
right now he's in a good spot.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
It seems.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Yeah. I mean he's in the spot that we need
him to be in. And you know, he's a program
guy and a Yukon guy, and you know, he's just
he's where we need him to be right now. It's
it's incredibly comforting to have him there as we get off,
as we've gotten off to these slow starts, just to

(01:02):
have a player with his experience and you know, with
his mentality and and the way he can impact the
game with his defense and uh, you know's ability to
get you know, you get stops, push the ball, get
some early offense going, and just changed the tempo and
the pace and the energy. Uh when when he when
when he enters the court, you know, starter, I mean,

(01:24):
Listen has is going to be in there in crunch
time moments. He's going to play down the stretch of
these games. I'm not sure where that's going relative to
how we start games in the future. I think it's
it's something that we're we're working our way through what
makes the most sense for this team. But I know
he's going to be uh, you know, his minutes are

(01:44):
going to go up, his production is going to go up,
and I know he's gonna be out there when it matters.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
Right, And Williams in a tough spot.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
He's still learning the system. Not the biggest guard either,
I mean he's kind of he and Hassardo roughly the
same height. So that doesn't make anything any any easier
for you finding a new guy trying to adapt to
a system. Much like in some ways what Tristan Newton
did when he first stepped on campus.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yeah, it wasn't smooth and uh with t new and
and uh, you know we buttoned heads quite a bit
that first year in particular, even into year two. Uh,
and yeah, it's uh, you know, it's a demanding place
where you know, we we have a I'm a demanding coach.
There's a way that that we want to play at

(02:31):
both ends of the court that that that I think
is stressful for players because we've got really high standards
of how we want to do things in terms of
our execution, in terms of how hard we play, and
in terms of being in all the right spots making
all the right decisions. So yeah, it's it's an intense
level of basketball when you put the Yukon uniform on,

(02:54):
no matter where you played before, you come play basketball
at the basketball capital of the world. So and we're
asking him to play, uh, in a manner that he's
not accustomed to. We're asking for for Aiden to play
on the ball and and to be a decision maker
and a facilitator and more of a lead guard. Yeah.

(03:15):
We obviously it's not something that is in our best
interest to have him and Hassan on the court a
lot together. Uh, it's just it's too small of of
of a guard tandem. So you know, Aiden's just got
to uh, you know, just keep keep grinding and and
uh and staying locked in.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
You know, watching your press conference from the other night
and you mentioned this too, the lack of size that
you have at the guard position in some ways has
helped has hurt Samson.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
Johnson in the lob.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Game killed him. Yeah, it's it's hurt him a lot.
It's it's uh, yes, Samson, I think right now second
in the country and blocks per minute. I mean, he's
been awesome protecting the rim. When he's been able to
stay on the court. Hopefully he took a step forward
not fouling. But we've missed him. I mean we we've

(04:02):
missed him. We've missed him pro probably six six to
eight points on possessions per game here where normally Cam
would be throwing him a lob t U would be
throwing him a lob steph Castle, Andre Jackson. You know,
these bigger guards would be throwing the ball up to

(04:23):
him for highlight, highlight, real lob dunks, and we're just
not there yet. Part of it is size. Part of
it is where do you have your eyes and and
what reads are you're making. So but you know, Samson
is is uh, you know, Samson's underrated, great screener for
us too, with a lot of our off ball movement,

(04:44):
and we've got to get Taris there. Taris. Uh, you
know that there's a drop off in in how well
we screen when Samson goes out and Taris goes in.
Although Taris's you know, Tarris Is at times has been
a real strong presence finishing around the basket.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Yeah, you mentioned he has a big upside, but still
a lot of fundamentals to work on.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yes, yes, I mean that the spots on the court
that he needs to play in, uh, you know, the
way that he posts up, the way that he screens,
you know, violently hitting people on blockouts. He's such a
nice guy and he's such a sweetheart, and he's a
very talented big man. You know, but I think that

(05:27):
there's more there's more violence, there's more ferocity that he
could play with on the court and and you know,
whether it's screening, rolling, protecting the rim, you know, dominating
positionally at both ends that there's there's there's a lot
of improvement out there for for Taris.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
How do you teach that the ferocity being such a
nice guy, how do you change that mentality?

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Guilt shame, film, no phil men challenging people and showing
clips and you know, kind of pulling on that thread
of what motivates people and and you know and challenging,
you know, their their toughness and their warrior spirit and

(06:18):
questioning their will, the will of a man. You know,
you you question the will of a man enough, maybe
that'll get him to uh uh to not want to
hear that anymore from you. You know, sometimes you're just
pointing it out and saying, a taris man. You got
to do your job as a big guy. So uh,
you know, you try a lot of different things and

(06:39):
see what works.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Okay, speaking of big man, Donovan had himself a nice
game last week and I just saw a video maybe
in the last hour where as Jones, the former Husky
who played for Gino, delivered his championship rings.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
He's also a pretty good start in Portland.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Yeah, d c is. Uh, you know, he's doing great,
and you know, I think it's a young team that
he could grow with and uh got his first start
and and uh he's certainly has been able to deliver
I think he's like you could already see that the
way that the defense translates to the NBA, and and
why we were so successful that way, and and uh

(07:16):
the organization loves him. Uh. I know that having that
human being in your organization on a daily basis is
uh makes you so much better. Uh. You know the
passion he plays with Uh, just a quality of human being,
and how he shows up for work every day. He's gonna,
I think, an awesome career.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
Yep, for sure, more with Dan on the U Comments
Basketball Coaches show in just a minute.
