Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to Bear Smokeouse Barbecue. It is the Yukon
Men's he Ice Hockey Coaches Show. I'm your host, Bob
Joyce with head coach Mike Cavan. Adam's got hoops tonight,
so it's just me and Cavin. I think I'm solo Friday.
This is the first of our coaches shows for the
second half. Our next one will be the twentieth, which
is a Tuesday here at Bears because we've got women's
basketball and Notre Dame on the nineteenth. Next hockey broadcast

(00:23):
is Friday. We've got Yukon and the UMAs Lowell.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Is that game at in our name or that Oh
that's stores stores yep, so we've got that. But it's
a five o'clock start, so it can't be two places
at once. Your hockey team continues to play well. What
impressed you most about the guys coming off the break
when they come back to campus. When did they get
back by the way for the first game.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
On the on the thirty.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
First We practiced on the twenty seventh was our first practice,
so most of them came back on the twenty sixth.
There was a storm though that night. I don't know
if you remember, so we Ryan Town and Owen Simpson
didn't make it back on time, so they missed practice
on the twenty seventh, but we're able to get them
in here late in the afternoon on the twenty seventh,

(01:08):
and they got three practices.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
In okay, and then you come away with a good
effort here.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
What was the biggest message to your guys when they
went for the break, when they went away, when they
got ready for exams, and then they go away for Christmas.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
Yeah, I think it was to just you know, go home,
enjoy the time with your family and your friends, and recharge,
reset and come back ready to tackle, you know, the
second half. Because you know, I tell the players all
the time, the Men's League boot begins in January. It's
a completely different you know, the games just are a

(01:45):
lot more intense, They mean a lot more. And when
teams are playing for a playoff spot or position, you know,
home ice, not having a go on the road, the
games just are more intense and they mean more. And
you know, right now we're in also in the mix
of you know, trying to stay involved with the national

(02:06):
tournament as well. You know, that's just all numbers. So
you have to win your games, and your NPI numbers
got to be you know, if you want to guarantee
that you're going to be in that national tournament, you've
got to be in the top twelve.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeah, what does that look like right now? How does
this new system work? And how do you guys stand?
Because I remember last year during the holidays, I was
in North Carolina. I decided to say, let's see where
they are in the pair wise, and then it's like,
all right, this is doable with what was coming up,
and you took off. Are you in that same good
spot now where you take care of your business?

Speaker 3 (02:38):
You'd be all right?

Speaker 1 (02:39):
You know.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
I think we're fifteen right now. However, you know, if
we had won the Stonehill game, we'd be eleven. You know,
So it's still very volatile right now. It's we're in
a good spot. We just have to continue to play
well and win our games.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
True, You've got you Massolow coming up this weekend. Health Wise,
you lost to Houston Cartman to a torn acl You
bring in a young man named Carter Sproll comes out
of Grand Forks, North Dakota, played some time in the
North American Hockey League six three, two oh seven.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
What can it tell us about this young man?

Speaker 4 (03:18):
Yeah, he was certainly a late ad, but he was
playing in the North American League. He was playing for Watertown.
He's a big, strong kid. He's a diligent player, really smart,
plays two hundred feet and you know, I've only seen
him now for about a week, but I have he's
been impressing me each day that he's on the ice.

(03:41):
I was telling our staff today that he really plugged
in when it comes to drills. And for a kid
that is so new to our program and doesn't really
know our systems or how we're going to play, he's
adapted very quickly.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
How old is he is? He is twenty years old.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Okay, so he's your typical incoming freshman from junior hockey.
Then all right, no, that's good. Health wise. How you
doing health wise team wise?

Speaker 4 (04:09):
Right now? Okay, yeah, knock on wood, we're okay right now.
So the break, with the exception of Houston, who's out
for the season, right now, I think we're in pretty
good shape.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
So Trey at the time, did Trey Scott some good?

Speaker 4 (04:22):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, it did everybody good. I think
it did, you know, even Joey got a couple of
weeks rest before you had to go play over in
the Spangler Cup.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Yeah, they had a real, real good success.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
They played some pro teams across the pond, and I
guess what their best finished ever, they finished playing the championship.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Well, it's the first time they've ever played the college
select team. So okay, it's the tournament's been going on
for a long time. However, this is the first time
we sent a team of college players and they lost
in the final. They had a great showing.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Yeah, and I'm sure and I think Joey had an
assist in the first game that they played.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
What are some of the with some of the feedback
that he gave you on the experience. It was a
great experience.

Speaker 4 (05:04):
You know, the crowds were excellent, you know, uh, you know,
Switzerland's a beautiful country, Davos is a spectacular area. The
rink was He loved the rank, the crowds. You know,
it's a very well run and in respected tournament, and
I think it was It would be a it's a
lifetime experience for him mm hm.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
And you might see some payoff later on, right.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
I hope.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
So, yeah, for sure.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
Uh, we met, you mentioned Cayden, and we did talk
about Cayden. He probably has taken I'm sure a few
other guys have taken significant jumps from freshman to sophomore year.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
You've talked about this, Joey did it last year. Where
have you seen Caden's game get better?

Speaker 4 (05:44):
I just think he feels a lot more comfortable playing
within our system. He Uh, He's always had great speed,
he's got great compete, he shoots the puck extremely well.
And now he's playing I say all the time, the
really good players can play without thinking. You know, they
think without thinking, if that makes sense. He's not don't think,

(06:06):
just playing, just he's just playing. And his two line mates,
he's had a lot of chemistry with Des and Blazer,
and like I said, they were by far I thought
our best line uh Saturday down to Long Island.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Yeah, and they have played really well all year. I
mean they have a nice chemistry, those three. I mean,
Kan had a good, good chemistry with the Ethans last year.
Right now he's taken these two under their wing and
just taking it to a different level.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
Yeah. And you know the Ethans now playing with Mike
Murtag who's taken his game to another level as well. Yeah,
so he's been playing lights out hockey for us, and
we've moved him to center, and he's done a nice
job on the dot for us as well.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
What about the veterans, Tats obviously still putting up good numbers.
I mean Tristan, I mean the goal he's scored against Merrimac.
I think this is the one that made it four
or five two. Yeah, absolute from between the circles. They
just got and continue to do their job. Tabor too,
and they just continue to be the foot soldiers.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
They do that line, the dirty work Tabor person phrase
you oh the night. They just give you an honest effort.
They're really really hard to play against. I trust them
out there against any line that another opponent might throw
at us. They just they play the game the right way.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
You had a lot of speed last year. As the
speed increased team wise this year from a skating standpoint.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
I would it certainly hasn't decreased. So I think, you know,
when guys that have taken that jump, you know, when
you're a freshman, sometimes you don't play as fast as
you're capable because you're still trying to learn a new system.
Now that those guys know the system pretty well, I

(07:55):
think they're playing faster. So I would say this team
is probably a bit quicker than last year.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Your team. What about special teams? You're happy where that
where that's at at the school.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
You know we I thought our penalty kill was outstanding,
uh against Long Island, and then you know, we got
a big power play goal to get us started. And
I thought that power play was dangerous both games as well.
But was that tat goal that tatchoal Yeah, shot it
from the flank, went five hole and uh, but we
had some really good chances besides that.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
Yeah, puck wooman good.

Speaker 4 (08:26):
It was excellent.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Yeah good. All right, we'll take a break.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
We'll come back and uh more with cav little later
on it'll be Karlin Dezayne and Brendan Dumpy as The
Yukon Hockey Coaches Show continues life from Bear Spokehouse Barbecue
